What’s your budget?

I don’t see what the big deal is. If you’re a casual player, play WvWvW casually if that’s what you want to do. If you’re in it for the 1v1 fights, look into sPvP instead.

I have 29/50 WvWvW player kills filled up on my monthly from one day where I brought my lv35 under-geared Mesmer into WvWvW. Zergs clashed in a very long battle at our keep in EB, I only died twice during that period.

I don’t feel like anything is stopping me from playing WvWvW if I want to. I have done small groups with a character that is 80 with still only just all rares and a few exotics from drops and we had much success flipping camps and sentries. Sure, we got stomped a few times – but I really doubt better gear would have prevented a zerg from running us over or being outnumbered or just not being great at PvP (I’m not great at 1v1 because I hardly ever do it and I know others in my group’d said the same thing). The amount of times we died wasn’t high enough to be a bother or entirely discouraging.

While Ascended for at least one of my characters is on my list of long-term goals I don’t really feel that motivated to get it as fast as possible because I’m doing fine at everything I want to do without it and there are other things I want more first. I am not doing high-level Fractals, but I can do WvWvW, dungeons, whatever I want.

You can crunch numbers, but what is it actually holding you back from doing ?

So, this was happening to me (although I was also experiencing massive lag) and I was getting frustrated so I restarted my gateway + router and it seems to be back to normal. Not promising it will work, but I’m happy that it’s stopped for now.

I did not do the JP last year. I spent an hour or so learning it – and now I have 15 completes.

It is challenging to learn, but so far there is only one possible “bug” I have seen – that is the presents ending up stuck in a semi-exploded state. However, people are able to jump up the semi-exploded ones and consistently make it so it doesn’t seem like the end of the world.

Then probably no one knows for sure, just like in the past.

There’s a gust of wind by the snowman right after the presents, and another on the first very big peppermint after that. Those are the only two I’ve ever encountered, though. I have been doing the left path.

Probably no one knows for sure. If I was really interested, I would probably check one of those release note things as it’s the best chance for finding out.

I dunno, what constitutes “ripped off” ? What intrinsic actual value does it have ?

If/when craftable precursors come this should be solved – they will have an actual value.

@Funky – did you actually see the projectiles and jump over them ? People who just spam jump could easily not actually be jumping over any of them.

I’m going to guess it’s referring to either the big presents (they’re bigger than a charr, hard to miss) scattered all over the world (on maps with enemies) or it’s referring to opening the presents you get as rewards for doing things or as drops – that appear in your inventory.

The text of whatever you’re referring to would probably clarify exactly what.

I think that would be nice. Even to get an actual achievement for doing it once – because for many that IS a big accomplishment and running a single JP 20 times is quite a lot.

(I did the JP 10 times yesterday, so no one can accuse me of being bad at it and wanting hand-outs, mmkay)

As I was doing all that jumping I thought it would be nice, too, for people who are good at it to get an achievement for doing every path or something like that. It seems like such a great JP just didn’t get much in the way of achievements.

Make sure you are ready to hit the dodge button once you get past the exploding presents, though ! There’s a snowman that blows wind right after them and then big rolling snowballs and ground AOE – you will most likely have to dodge at least some ground AOE so pre be prepared !

It sounds like overheating and/or a PSU problem to me. Overheating can be due to buildup of dust/et cetera over time – have you taken a can of compressed air to the inside of the PC recently (unfortunately this problem or “built up gunk” can be even worse on laptops because it’s harder/impossible to clean them) ? Or it could be overheating or overdrawing power as mentioned due to the high activity in the Wintersday events.

It’s not giving them a medal for falling a lot – they’re still falling and getting nothing – at least now they can keep trying without having to wait. Waiting is boring and causes people who are willing to try and improve and learn and get better to give up. I’m glad that people who aren’t as totally amazing as I am can keep trying and actually learn the JP instead of waiting for everyone who did make it to get all the way to the end before they can even try again. All making them wait would do is prolong the time they need to set aside to learn the puzzle and I don’t think it’s harming my 1337 skillz to let someone else learn how to do this, too. I applaud this change.

I would be curious to know. I have alts of every race so those are already done and I couldn’t test this. I do know I got credit for the “Personal Story Completer” daily when I helped someone else – which is very good to know (and I didn’t realise would count) – that makes me think what you’re saying might actually work.

I guess it depends on how “seriously” you want to take it. In my guild I’ve never seen anyway ask for a specific class or deny someone based on class when putting together a dungeon run. If you don’t care about speedruns or anything then you can almost certainly join a guild and have people to do things with no matter what class you choose – allowing you to pick whatever class you want to play.

I guess I would ask why you’re worried about “survivability”. What kind of PvE ? Are we talking open world or something more specialised like Fractals ?

If it’s just open world, I don’t think any class should have a problem. I have played them all and none of them are “hard” to keep alive in regular PvE. I know the first time I played a Guardian it felt ridiculously easy – but the more squishy classes still aren’t “hard” in comparison.

I’m saying this because I think you should have faith in your abilities and pick whatever class you think would be most fun – don’t worry about if they can stay alive because any of them will be able to.

Or maybe it was a “title” conferred by others – not necessarily something they would call themselves.

You know, “O, that’s crazy Greg” – Greg’s probably not running around calling himself crazy but everyone knows him as “Crazy Greg”.

I got the achievement easily on an overflow with ~5 other people (more showed up later, but I’d already completed the achievement at that point). All you do is wait for the wurm to start the shockwave attack animation (once you see it and know what it looks like, it’s easy to recognise) – then see it shoot out the shockwave “projectile” and then you jump over it. It looks like wind or something rushing along the ground spraying dust. It is pretty large and easy to see. You just jump over it. I got the achievement very quickly in one spawn of the wurm by doing that.

I did it pretty far away from the wurm. For me it was easier because then I could see the projectile heading toward me and time my jump to hop over it.

It’s probably harder to do on a full map with tons of people in the way running around and spamming particle effects.

If it’s tax, it’s not an “overcharge” and nothing to get mad about – and nothing you can do about it.

It should display the tax when you’re buying. I am not subject to tax in my area, but it showed me a “$0 tax” sort of message when I bought gems last time.

If anything, it would be something to take up with your local/etcetera government. ANet is not charging taxes to profit – they don’t get to keep it, it’s not them you need to be mad at, if anyone.

If it’s not tax, I hope it can be resolved and I’m sure it was an honest mistake. I would focus on recovering your password first.

Are you able to move the paypal balance to even a paypal card ? Do you have a credit or debit card ? Could you get a predpaid one ? If you’re under 18 or the legal age in your country can you get someone to open an account with you (in my country they can help you open a regular banking account and then you could use the attached VISA-endorsed debit card to buy gems) ?

Sorry if that is not helpful or does not apply to you – I have heard of other people having this problem and from what I read in the other thread it seems like getting the balance on to a card of some type is the only way – but if someone else has more experience please correct me !

“Underflow” would be great for those in-between zones that have sparse populations outside of being chosen for a LS event.

I’m not sure about the Dungeon issue. Have you joined a guild ? I only started doing Dungeons recently because of that. We have done dungeons with one/no “heavy” class. We had three Mesmers once ! If you join a guild where people aren’t looking to speedrun as fast as possible you should be fine.

I don’t think the low-ish cost of exotic gear is an issue. It means you run dungeons if you WANT to, but you don’t HAVE to in order to get that gear. I think that’s a good thing and something that was promised for GW2.

I agree that the Not So Secret dive location shouldn’t count toward that meta – it should be its own thing. I have come to really enjoy JPs. I never thought I’d be able to, yet I’ve finally done Skipping Stones and the Wintersday JP ! This month my monthly JPs were all new ones and I love the challenge and “different” kind of activity. Not So Secret was my first JP I ever tried – and I didn’t make it, but I hope new or frustrated players will try some of the easier ones if they’re interested but not ready for something like that yet.

I would consider myself “casual” and I feel this game is really “friendly” to me. I can join in things if I want to, but I don’t have to. I excitedly made it to 400 Cooking and 400 Jewelcrafting recently – out of almost all stuff I’d gathered myself. I know I will probably never get Ascended crafted armor – but then again I said the same thing about JPs. But it’s not a big deal either way – I don’t do high-level fractals. I can get a character to 80 and just buy them a set of plain old rares and do basically anything I want to. I don’t even feel pressure to get a set of exotics – although it’s something to “work toward”. Now WvWvW will be account-bound, too.

I dunno, if a phantasm can kill something, why not ? They attack with weapons and do damage – so it seems like they’re some kind of physical matter at least temporarily held together.

I was more talking about temperature change. Does an illusion keep you warm?

If it’s matter, I wonder why couldn’t it form a thermal barrier/cocoon like anything else ? Heck, you could optimise the potential for body heat retention beyond “real” materials by fiddling with the molecular structure !

I guess it really depends on what Mesmer magic can actually “do”. Kasmeer can clearly do things that the player cannot – I wonder what the potential is and what the physics are. But it’s magic, so I should probably not think too much.

I started on the first day of Head Start, but I never played GW1 – it was before I gave “MMOs” a chance.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some people who did play GW1 joined after Wintersday last year for whatever reasons, too.

Heck, I had the game but missed 90% of Wintersday because I wasn’t able to play for a while – so I consider this my “first” one since I’m actually doing things not just showing up confused on the last day and somehow ending up with some skins (I have no idea what happened).

I am super picky, too – but you just have to keep looking. I have even re-rolled a few alts a few times because I ended up not liking their names. What are your goals for a name ? Do you care about fitting into the lore of the game ?

I will say – the naming “restrictions” forced me to think outside the box and get creative and I’m really happy with the results. I know based on a lot of the first names I tried to pick that my first choices were pretty awful. All the really obvious names being taken was really a good thing – it made me actually think about what I was going to name them instead of being the 689th Brunhilde or whatever.

I think we should be able to use our Account name in things like Guild chat – I have too many alts and don’t expect people to keep track of them all. :P

I decided to try it last night and it was great ! I was pretty awful the first few times, but really got a hang of it in the time I played.

I like that you have to play to hear the song – they’re all songs we’ve all heard many times so it’s cool to start to recognise them when you’re actually hitting the right notes. I had a really great group for a while and we made much music.

It helped for me to just put my fingers on the 1-9 keys – with nothing on five. That way to play the notes I didn’t have to think of which key to press, really, just where it was in relation to my fingers. Like, farthest away on either side means press pinky finger – middle notes on the boards are index finger and you can get the ones in-between by relating them to where they are in relation to those.

I think just like Guitar Hero it’s not about actual ability to play real musical instruments – haven’t you seen how real guitar players can suck horribly at that game, yet people who can’t play for real can be great at it ? It’s just not the same thing.

Take on some champions. I have downed champs with just one other person – although some will take more and some you might be able to solo. Since there are two of you, you could certainly give it a shot !

Try the dungeons you can do, too – you’ll likely need more than two people, though. Have you joined a guild ?

I did WvWvW map complete over the course of less than a week. Now that we’re not in the WvWvW season it might take longer (colour changing less often) but I am planning on doing it again with my Mesmer and I does not afraid.

I started now because I thought it was going to be really bad and take a really long time – but it wasn’t bad !

I don’t feel “bullied” in WvWvW. It’s very anonymous. Sure, I got killed a few times – but I killed some people back, too. It’s not “bullying” – it’s just a war game. I have not experienced any actual “griefing” – I’m sure it’s possible but it doesn’t seem common. I actually started doing WvW a bit more too – you can really accomplish a lot with even just a group of three ! That should be more than enough to get all the things that you would normally hold for your given colour.

I would encourage you or anyone else to give it a shot. I have never cared for PvP in general, but I’m glad that I gave it a shot and started to actually get into it.

And I did it on an Engineer – no stealth, crappy speed boost. It should be cake on my Mesmer or Warrior.

Try to get a group together or ask for help if you can’t get something (Skillpoint in EB guarded by a champ, haha – thank you so much bystander who gave my poor Engineer stealth I hadn’t realised how much deep crap I’d stepped in and that was the last thing I needed for all of WvW and I’d ran all over enemy territory to get there).

I’m not a hardcore player, but in the past month or so I’ve been having stacks of just about everything you can gather piling up in my bags – I have lots of alts and it’s starting to pile up in their wee little lowbie bags, too.

I’ll probably buy at least one. I don’t know, realistically I think they’re worth probably half the price being charged for them (to me), but I don’t have to buy them all at once and I’m not paying a monthly fee so spreading it out over months won’t add up to a lot. Eh. Dunno.

They took a “break” over The Holidays – but I’m pretty sure the 4 releases will be one every two weeks – at least that’s what I heard. I’d be fine either way.

Back in my day you bought your gosh darn robe for 22960gp from a shady dude in High Hedge with Flesh Golems and you liked it and admired what few pixels you had and were grateful for each and every one of them.

I think this whole update is great and am looking forward to next year.

I don’t think it’s a “bug”, I agree that it’s needing to use Dailies to get the meta – especially easy since this update lasts so long.

I did it three times and there is no difference at all.

I didn’t wait any of the three times I did it and was fine (couldn’t figure out a puzzle the first time – then went back twice and did them right).

I do have the bug (I’m guessing everyone does) of already having the “Nightmare Ender” achievement.

I thought this was an awesome update and I am currently levelling a Warrior in Kessex since the PS sent him there and there doesn’t seem to be any issues. I also did some levelling on my Necromancer right when the Tower first hit with all the random Toxic Alliance mobs there and it still wasn’t a big deal.

I agree that rewards need another look, however bugs are inevitable and I don’t really care as long as they get fixed. I’ve hug tested my own code before and I can’t imagine doing it on such a large scale as an MMO and NOT having something slip through.

Are you sure you solved all the puzzles non-violently? I ask because a lot of people on map chat were saying the same thing but had missed one – usually the clockwork one it seemed.

The instance wasn’t over, why wouldn’t you follow them?

It’s pretty standard as well that NPCs have skills the players don’t have. So she probably started the portal outside a long time ago and is just now making the second half. No, WE can’t do that – but special characters can often do extraordinary things. I mean, she also broke the spell hiding the tower – something WE would not have been able to do.

I can understand maybe if English isn’t someone’s native language but like… Things shaking, stuff bad, follow trusted companions so you don’t become rubble – to da. I think 90% of players can “get” that – this is an “RPG” after all, why totally ignore those in your ad hoc party?

I like your idea a lot ! (and I didn’t get it last year since I had to take time off from the game around that time) I just don’t know how difficult it would be to actually implement. Probably do-able ? And really cool.

I’d recommend switching to “wasd” or similar instead of the arrows – it will put her fingers close enough to easily reach the 1-6-ish keys without having to take the other hand off the mouse. I still have that and “v” for dodge which I hit with my thumb.

Do you guys have a mouse with lots of buttons on it ? Those can have a higher learning curve and might be best to not use at first.

She doesn’t have to use the mouse to turn at first. I had been playing WoW for a few months (the first game I played where it was used) before someone told me about that and while it’s useful it’s not the end of the world to not be doing it unless you’re doing PvP or something. You can do PvE just fine most of the time without it. Personally I use a combination of keyboard and mouse turning based on what I’m doing. I would just show her the options and let her work it out – I know that I switch back and forth even during the same content. I use keyboard turning to line up some JP jumps, while for things like Skipping Stones I’m only using the mouse on the floating rocks part. Sometimes I use strafe+keyboard turn in combat to run around things in circles while using the mouse to target and move camera to keep the enemy on screen. Whatever the situation calls for. Always using just the mouse makes my wrist pretty unhappy – days where I do a lot of JPs I can always feel it cramping up so I relieve that by using keyboard when there’s no disadvantage.

I would honestly just recommend having hers use the “default” control scheme for now, and if she finds something else she’d rather like she can customise it to fit her needs better. It lets her start with a clean slate (one that’s pretty similar across many MMOs and games in general) and go from there.

Also, if she’s really interested her own account might be a good idea so you can play together and to not have to switch things back and forth. Just saying because I’ve seen a few posts about people sharing who ended up attached to a character but now want to be able to play together but they can’t and have to start over.

Check the wiki for questions like this. Not trying to brush you off – I have many questions like this and it’s invaluable to use the wiki and other sites!

If you really wanted to, you could run Sanctum Sprint every time it’s active – or wait until ZS returns – you can get it for 150 fortune scraps so you will most likely be able to farm those and get it when ZS is back.

I have to also vote for the Logitech G600. I know it’s *slightly*more than you wanted to pay, but it’s very worth it. You may also be able to get a deal or sale – I think I paid $60-ish for mine, new.

It depends on what you want !

There are no set rules. People sometimes switch “mains” or go back and forth between several. Just play whatever makes you happy.

Personally, I have one of each Profession – and while the lv80 is my “Main” I don’t know if that will still be true when the others catch up. I play them as I feel like it – so they’re not all the same level, I’m betting the Mesmer will be the next 80 – although who knows, the Guardian was ahead for a long time.

You don’t need one of each or anything – I’m just saying, play what’s fun and don’t worry about it. Everyone has different playstyles – some people have only one character, period – some have way more than 8 ! If you don’t like something, you don’t have to keep putting time into it – and also don’t worry about putting time into something just because it’s not your “main”. This game is pretty decently “alt friendly”. Sometimes it’s not, but you can do a LOT without having to make a choice that wouldn’t be – practically the whole game outside of high-level Fractals.

I never actually got rid of WoW after I stopped playing it and I have a good number of games from Steam (some quite large, over 20Gb) including some I really should uninstall since they were FTP and I never played them and 50Gb of just Tom Baker era Doctor Who and my 1Tb HDD is only half full (slightly under). It only cost $50.

My GW2.dat which I have never deleted or anything since launch is only 17.2Gb. There are more than 30 maps so each map must take up less than .5Gb – most likely quite a bit less since there are many files that are needed apart from maps. So even if they added 2 maps per year the file would only grow by about 1Gb per YEAR. So you’d only gain 10Gb in ten whole years – and that’s a very unreasonably high estimate.

I am indifferent to if content is permanent or not, I just don’t think it’s a technical issue involving our HDD’s storage space.

Once upon a time I didn’t use strong passwords and I re-used them. Thankfully I saw the light one day and now use KeePass to maintain and store a database of randomly-generated random-string passwords. For sites where I often have to type the password in by hand on my phone or otherwise (when installing a new Android custom ROM you have to input information by hand, so using a totally random password becomes very tedious) I basically do what XKCD suggests – using a short sentence, although I tend to interject some 1337 anyway.

I am thankful for this because a bit after I switched over all the “important” accounts that I use on a regular basis a random small forum I had gone to a long time ago had been hacked and the information taken. I did not know this, and even if I had still been active on that forum there would not have been any signs that it had happened – the people hacking into it didn’t give a crap about our forum accounts – they wanted to see if those passwords could lead to actual profit elsewhere.

Anyway, I found out because one day I went to Twitter – an account I forgot to change over (I only signed up for it a long time ago to get NWS hurricane alerts and updates texted to my phone) and found it had been accessed by someone not me and used to spam my 0 followers with diet pill ads. Only because of that I ended up finding out what happened.

Re-using passwords is a real problem with many examples of how it can screw up anything from your day to potentially your life. I urge anyone still using those kind of passwords to check out something like KeePass or a similar solution (I use it because I can use it on Android too).

Ain’t nobody gonna guess that without somehow brute-forcing it. If all your passwords are that long and random strings they can’t use those passwords to get into any accounts. And, honestly, if they DID get their hands on one (like compromising a small forum) they’d probably not even bother to try because you’ve removed yourself from the pool of “possible easy targets”.

I would give it another shot. That’s supposed to be one of the easiest ones you can do. I’m not trying to make you feel bad for having trouble with it – but maybe try again before saying it needs to be re-tuned.

AC P3 was my first dungeon, period. My guild will bring anyone who meets the level requirement.

Is your gear up to level ? Are you using stats to help you survive and fit your playstyle ?

Are you in a Guild ? I was nervous to try dungeons at all because I was afraid I would drag everyone down – but it has gone surprisingly well !

Are you with a guild group or people who will explain to you what to do at each “step” of the dungeon ? (it doesn’t have to be a novel – just “stack on me here” and “try to use cc on these mobs” or “leave those, follow me !”)

If you’re not – definitely look into joining a Guild – especially one that does dungeons and welcomes people new to them !

If you can, maybe try to think of the times you died and think about WHY – what happened ? What could you do to avoid that ? Everyone makes mistakes and that’s totally okay – but what I’m saying is think to see if maybe there’s a pattern of something you’re “missing”. Maybe you need to practice dodging ? Maybe it’s something class specific each time ? Maybe something else ?
