Staff; Better At Closer Range?

Chaos Archangel.5071

I’ve been using the staff for a while now, but always at the maximum attack range. Now that I’ve been pvping a bit more with a condition build, I’m starting to notice that the staff and clones seem to do more damage the closer they are to the opponent.

Is this true or am I delusional?

I could see the Staff being a decent close/mid-range weapon because of the bouncing attacks as well as Chaos Storm (Much more effective when both you AND your opponent are standing inside it.) Can anyone verify?

If I took 900 toughness vs 900 vitality, which would allow me to endure more damage?

Are the statistics interchangeable? (As in, if I have enough of Vitality, do I not need any toughness?)

Same with power and precision. Do I need power if I stack a lot of precision? Can power alone be enough to not need precision?

Can someone please clear up the exact uses for the statistics? Especially since toughness and vitality seem redundant.

Ah kitten I had intended to already change Illusion III to Illusion V, but I guess I overlooked it, thanks for pointing that out, and wow Gaiawolf that confusion trick is such a great idea.

- The problem I’m now having with shatters is knowing WHEN to shatter. Being a condition build, I figured the majority of my damage would come from Winds of Chaos on the staff, I wouldn’t be using the phantasm much and the rest of the moves are for defense (and clone generation, of course). That being said, I figured I shouldn’t be shattering when I use the staff.. Am I wrong for this assumption?

-If Confusing Combatants (Dueling Grandmaster Trait) doesn’t stack intensity, then it completely blows away what I had hoped to do. Can anyone verify?

- Retaliatory Shield (Dueling III) still has me a bit confused.. When would it proc beyond when I use Chaos Storm? (Which also gives Retaliation.. Starting to see a synergy there). I assumed only Aegis and counter moves were considered blocks.

Edit: … did it really just force me to say kitten instead.. of er, darn?

Yeah, also when the clones’ target dies &/or is replaced by another clone/phantasm. It happens rather often, especially when I’m sitting back taking it easy with Winds of Chaos & 3x clones.

Right now, my current strategy is to shatter when equipped with Sword and sit with clones and play Hide & Seek while in Staff, switching back and forth as often as I need.

(Edit: I originally failed with the first link and still had a previous trait)

-Now I’m wondering, would 5x Runes of Nightmare/1xRune of Undead be better for the +condition duration? It may be a hefty sacrifice in toughness since I also took some points out of Chaos.

-It hurts my heart to lose Chaos (X), and make my Staff is now a bit slower but am I right in thinking that its a worthwhile sacrifice to add Confusion on clone death [25 in Dueling] in addition to Weakness 3sec/3xBleeds/3xVulnerability(5sec for both) from Chaos (V)?

-Would it be more advantageous to drop five more from the Chaos tree in favor of maxing Dueling? I’m thinking Dueling I or IV, V, and X

Edit: I love Blink, but Null Field /Arcane Thievery are catching my eye. Decisions…

I cant thank ya’ll enough for pointing out all these facts that would’ve taken me days, maybe even a couple weeks to figure out. Most of the builds I’ve made usually involved keeping my Phantasms ALIVE, so shattering is still a bit new to me, especially iPersona.
Theres some newer information here since last time I checked the thread, and will certainly do more testing today.
-Guardians and Necromancers seem to giggle whenever I attempt to take them on (they can’t kill me, but its almost always a stalemate). Is there any way around this, or is condition damage naturally ineffective against these professions?

- Prismatic Understanding vs Illusory Persona SEEMS like a no-brainer, but would there be any reason to choose Prismatic over Persona?

All of the above responses have been very helpful, thank you!

I’ll definitely keep Mind Wrack in mind for my rotations, particularly when I have Sword Clones out.

-Would Retaliation on block (Dueling 3) actually even work? Does it proc with Aegis?
-Would The Prestige’s burn be effective with such a build?
-Would Cry of Frustration be effective at all?

- Blink vs Mirror Images has me torn. On one hand, Blink would be a good way to chase people down in combination with Illusionary Leap, but it’d be even more effective porting around while Stealth’d to be even more of a headache for allies. Seems a better defensive tool, but Mirror Images gives me a 2 sec Distortion if I need as well as an instant two clones to pump damage out. Seems like a damage vs defense decision, curious to know which one others would pick for this build.

This build revolves around having 3 staff clones casting Winds of Chaos [http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Winds_of_Chaos] alongside me and fading in/out of stealth.

Sometimes this build seems unbelievably great, other times woefully underpowered. I feel like there is something I’m not seeing. Anyone use a similar build and could explain?

Also, I’m not big on shatters usually, but I see a bit of shatter potential here. If someone more knowledgeable could elaborate, that’d be much appreciated.

While I definitely understand the idea behind it, I’m torn. On one hand, you can still make a viable Tank/DPS if you’d like, but the +Healing Power trait seems nearly worthless for most classes.
Maybe I’m not understanding it properly, but it seems pointless to stack healing power for the minimal bonuses it gives.

I understand that healers are crucial for many other MMOs, but in GW it seems making a healer isn’t even optional.

Not only is it’s range pitiful, but once you use Illusionary Leap, you have 5 seconds to swap for the stunbreaker/immobilize.. It isn’t as if you can simply leap out of a stun/daze with no preparation, you have to see it coming.
Phase Retreat does no damage and generates a clone. At least ONE of these should be a stunbreaker.

With the right traits/utilities/secondary weaponset, sword-sword build is definitely viable.

Thing of note though, the offhand sword’s first attack is both a fairly damaging counter OR a projectile daze. The illusion spawned is purely for damage purposes, so you may wanna consider Power/Precision and have Staff as a secondary for defense.

I think if any other class should get a portal mechanic it should be Engineer. I could picture them building a sort of Portal device similar to a mini Asura Gate, and the class seems a bit under appreciated anyway.

BUT

For the sake of individuality, at least make another class’s portal a little different. Make it so our portal applies Chaos Armor to whomever warps through it. (Making it useful for not only transportation, but for skirmishes aswell) while making the Engineer portal remove conditions.. or something Or change the range.

If this is definitely going to happen, we should brainstorm ways to individualize cclass portals.

I’ve done a lil testing last night and got some interesting results, definitely see potential here but I can’t say for sure until I get more practice in. Still trying to pick a good defensive ability (Blink/Decoy/Mirror Images). I’ve only tried the condition damage spec though for now. Nailing 25 stacks of Vulnerability is surprisingly easy. The only problem I’m having with this is that I’ve never been too fond on Condition Damage on a Mesmer, and without runes it seems the CD is a bit on the just-below-acceptable side (That Daze Duration is boss though), but I’ll test both tonight though.

I’m thinking CD may actually be the way to go.

EasymodeX, I’m sending you a Christmas Card this year. Maybe even an Easter Basket.

Those are all really good points, and I’m really liking your Signet idea, so I’ve revised the build to something like this.

Problem is, like you said, I’m still lacking in clone generation.. Which makes me wish we could swap Elites with another utility. And damage-wise, perhaps condition damage would work better with all these dazes/defenses.

It seems I have to choose between Signets and Clone utilities. As for the Amulet, wouldn’t Soldier’s give me even less damage output?

Edit: Is Confounding Suggestions REALLY that bad? An AoE stun seems so awesome in my imagination..

Mantra of Concentration's two-second stability lasts long enough for you to pop both charges, so technically it allows you to have up to 4 secs of stability. This in conjunction with Mantra of Healing allows you to save so many lives (including your own)

Phantasmal Defender works well with Chaos Storm and regen from Inspiration, if you have a good amount of toughness along with Signet of Illusions, this guy’ll last pretty long. Definitely long enough to get another one when your first dies.

-Signet of Inspiration never seems to have any effect on any of my builds. =/ Does anyone have any testimonys towards its use?

Chaos Archangel.5071

I’ve grown a love for Mantra builds, and I see a couple interesting concepts here, how do you like the +25% damage when each mantra is ready and you have 3 clones out?

Why torch, and whats your secondary weapon?

And, I’m guessing this is for PvE? Even so, I wouldn’t spend 20 points on traits just for the sake of swiftness, swiftness is more of a convenience than necessity. And what kind of gear do you plan to use. Deceptive Evasion is far more useful when you maintain Vigor, but with such a low crit chance you won’t really benefit from Critical Infusion.

Also, shattering seems counter-productive here if you wanna maintain your damage boost, I’d replace Mental Torment with Empowering Illusions.

On a side note, does anyone know if your traited effects (Specifically Empowered Illusions/ Empowering Mantras) also affect Phantasm damage?

I’m always on the lookout for creative new builds, and in fishing through the traits, I was wondering why anyone hadn’t tried working a viable build around the Daze condition.

http://www.gw2build.com/builds/simulator.php#1.8.3.7.14.14.0.0.0.0.180.196.186.188.205.3.10.21.529.532.537.544.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.0.591.595.597.30.10.0.0.30

I’m stuck on the gear/runes for such a build, but the concept is simple enough. Its a shatter-heavy build that uses Dazes/Shatters to stack Vulnerability on foes while simultaneously buffing yourself. I went with Sword/Sword because sword clones stack Vuln while offhand sword has a nice quick Daze that hits multiple targets, and Imbued Diversion for AoE Daze (And 50% Stun) per clone to disrupt large groups. Staff has great defenses, and Chaos Storm can proc another AoE Daze/Stun. Unfortunately Counter Blade is bugged and doesn’t benefit from Confounding Suggestions.

The idea is still in it’s infancy but I’d appreciate some constructive advice/ideas. I feel like with a few tweaks, this could work rather well.

Mesmer Advice Needed

Chaos Archangel.5071

Welcome to the Mesmer, bro.

- Clones do nearly no damage, but depending on traits (Dom 3,4,5 / Dueling Master&Grandmaster ect.) they can have a LOT of secondary effects. In sPvP many different Mesmer builds can have Clones give the opponent a major headache, and if anything they’re shatter fodder. Phantasms are your damage summons, that also tend to have great secondary effects depending no your traits.

-NEVER waste a dodge just to move quicker, dodges/kiting are crucial for a Mesmer. That’s not to say it’s your only defensive options. Almost all Mesmers have a good amount of crowd control. Greatsword 4/5 [Cripple/Knockback], Sword 2/3 [Invulnerable/Stun-breaker + imobilize], & Pistol 5[Stun-Daze-Blind] can all help you out defensively. Of course, you also have a “Panic Button” shatter in your F4 which gives invulnerability for as many seconds as you have illusions to shatter.

-Unfortunately none of the weapons you use grant combo fields (Focus-LIGHT/Staff-ETHEREAL) but you have some awesome Finishers. Sword 3, is a LEAP finisher, but you do not have to swap to get the field. You can fire the clone off like a projectile (The range is deceptively short) and both you AND the clone will gain the combo effect. Your utilities offer some nice fields depending on the type of build you want to make.

-I never had a problem leveling, I used Sword-Focus and Staff for the majority of my time levelling, the Staff offers excellent defensive options and a pretty strong range Phantasm as well as one of the best Defensive AOEs the Mesmer can get (Chaos Storm, which pimps you out for its durations while making it nearly impossible for enemies in the field to do any significant harm to you). The focus takes a LOT of time getting used to, but it is your best method of swiftness at low levels and its Phantasm is one of our strongest when used properly.

I’d recommend Staff-Greatsword for leveling, but Mainhand sword & staff if you’re finding yourself taking too much damage. (Plus having two teleports is really kitten fun)

-No matter what build you have, learn to properly SHATTER. Your F1 & F2 shatters are for offense (F2 confusion takes getting used to and a bit of Condition Damage to be effective) and F3&F4 are better defensively. F3’s daze doesn’t stack duration so you have to learn to properly space your clones out for a devastating 3 second daze.

-Just remember that there are a LOT of different ways to play a Mesmer, and the more creative you are the better off you’ll be. Don’t overlook anything that your powers offer you.

Your Most Loathed Class

From your perspective, what classes give you the most trouble?

For example, I often hear Mesmer’s complaining about Thieves, while I never hear ANYONE complain about Rangers. From your personal POV is there any class you despise more in sPvP over others? Why? Does this feeling change when you play different class?

As a Mesmer, I must say that while Thieves don’t often give me issue, Necromancers seem to have little problem making me AND my clones curl up with burning fevers, bleeding sores, and all kinds frustrating maladies.

With my Ele this isn’t an issue, yet Guardians seem to take FOREVER for me to defeat. I find this interesting because both classes are Condition Damage specced yet my Mesmer has little issue with them. Thieves, if they catch me fighting someone else, tear me apart far more quicker than any others.

My general rotation is to start in air w/Gale for KD, then Fire Signet. Switch to fire for Firewall/Dragonstooth/Phoenix. Water for Comet. and then Earth for Magnetic Wave. If my enemy isn’t toast by then, the 15-might stacked Earth auto attack shreds them quickly. With Might duration runes, the might stacks last until Arcane Wave cools down and i can repeat the might stacking at any capture point.

I never thought about Earth Signet, and may swap out Air for it, the immobilize would work well with Dragons tooth but the extra 10 secs CD would hurt. Also, i REALLY love having 4 auras that give Protection/Fury/Swiftness to a team, but you pose a good point. I may drop the 10 Traited Air for 10 Arcane, but the fury buff… =/ My team having +500 power/cond.dmg on top of near constant Protection/Fury/Swiftness is really boss.

I’m looking for criticism on a build that I actually REALLY LOVE. I tried Scepter/Dagger at first for the damage/mobility, but the defenses on the Focus allow me to stick in the middle of my team for longer and apply Fury/Protection/Swiftness through my four auras.
I like Scepter/Focus for the 5 blasts it offers as it allows me to buff myself/allies with 6-15 stacks of might (though the fire field is sub-par) but I’m still uncertain about my choice of traits in Fire and Water beyond the ones for auras.

To note, this is a TEAM-oriented build, not just something for me to run up and slaughter people randomly with. I’m having some slight trouble with damage right now, and was wondering of any suggestions to improve on it. Most of my damage comes from condition damage(Augmented by the might stacks which adds up to 500+ condition damage) and outlasting the opponent, but this build really shines in groups.

Any improvement advice would be appreciated. Maybe even a weapon swap.

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fgAQNAW7flwzCrXUTkGb9IipHBHyBcoUcdZXJFz2FC;T0AAzCpoay0koJbTumkNtqYUxpidIvKA

It is a condition build, so the Staff is the primary weapon. IMO a condition build synergises well with stealth because you rely on easily spammed Staff Clones for about 33% of your damage, and you can roll out extra Clones without breaking stealth. Plus any conditions you inflict on your target will continue ticking while you’re stealthed.

That said, any build can do well with a stealth build.

I really like the set up here, and your build really showed me how useful clones could be without shatters/phantasms. I made a few changes to the traits (10 dom. 15 duel. 25 chaos) and I was wondering how much of a difference it’d make if I took the runes to add 45% bleed duration (with the 10% bleed sigil). Do you think it’s worth the loss of 300+ Condition Dmg?

I’m trying to work on a build that utilizes stealth with hard-hitting phantasms and a crap load of bleeds and other conditions (Without relying on a pistol or a greatsword).

To be honest I’ve only barely began to come up with ideas and would love some advice on how to stack damage in a build that focuses on stealth as a defense. I figured condition damage would be key to have them bleeding/burning out while phantasms pummeled them but any suggestions or ideas would be great.

I’d really like to stick with Sword/Sword as I like the look of the style (Big Drizzt/Spartacus fan) but the secondary is up for anything. I was messing around with Scepter for confusion, got some decent results. I love the Staff but didn’t see it as too viable for such a build. GS(Ugh, so common)& Pistol(Again.. frustratingly common) I’ll rely on if theres nothing better.

Any advice?

Mantra Build

in Mesmer

Posted by: Chaos Archangel.5071

Chaos Archangel.5071

It really depends on what type of Mantra build you want to make. Mantras are surprisingly flexible and not at all bad when you learn how to use them. The new patch made Mantras MUCH more reliable.

That said, I really don’t recommend a Mantra-only build as it isn’t very fun or as effective as it could be. You don’t have to take all 3 of your utility slots on Mantras, and its generally better to have at least one open for more flexibility. (Moves like Blink, Feedback, and others that you can pop in the middle of casting a Mantra are especially helpful)

The reason I say not to trait specifically for Mantras is that it ends up pushing you into Dueling/Domination when you might not want those stats. Mantras can make you an awesome healer or tank or give you much better survivability as a DPS. I’d say its better to come up with a type of Mes you want, and then insert the Mantras that best support your stats. (For example, the Inspiration tree allows you to remove a condition when you heal [IV] or AOE heal when you charge a Mantra [X]. If you use Mantra of Recovery, then you can remove a condition each time you pop a charge which may negate Mantra of Resolve depending on your playstyle.. Or allow you to replace it with Null Field/Phantasmal Disenchanter)

Harmonious Mantras isn’t as crucial as you think with the new patch, but still very useful. Especially for Mantra of Resolve and Mantra of Concentration. The 3 ticks of healing, stability, and ability to remove up to 6 boons is great.
Protected Mantras & Empowering Mantras may not be necessary depending on your gear/utilities. You use staff, so you can pop Chaos Armor/Phase Retreat/Distortion/Diversion while you channel to stay safe. Honestly I’ve never noticed Empowering Mantras before, and seems like it’d synergize really well with Compounding Power (Illusion: III. 3% more damage with each active clone) to make Mantra of Pain pretty damaging (especially with some more precision and Harmonious Mantras)

Mantra Mastery Is personal preference. Its useless for Mantra of Pain and even Mantra of Recovery recharge fast as is. But still a helpful trait.

If you wanna keep 30 Domination/Dueling then I think your last 10 should go into Illusions. It’ll reduce the cooldown of all your clone skills (and thus faster Phase Retreat) and allow you to add Compounding Power ontop of Empowering Mantras.

REMEMBER- Don’t just randomly charge mantras in the middle of a fight without protection. Its better to charge them with Staff. Throw down a Chaos Storm and safely charge, while in the storm make sure to Phase Retreat before it ends to get a free Chaos Armor without wasting your Staff 4. You can do all that while still channeling, and it leave you with yet another Chaos Armor to pop if you need and a free clone to pop for Diversion/Distortion.

I use a healer/support Mantra build and after hours of trial and error, its become the best build I’ve ever used. Incredibly supportive and tanky while still doing very decent damage. With it I’ve solo’d the Champion Broodmother in Orr, the vet giants and duo’d the Champion Abomination/Giant.

At the end of the day though, you’re putting in far more effort than a normal Mesmer and Mantra’s aren’t something you master quickly. If you’re willing to put the extra effort in, the rewards can be substantial.

Hey, if someone casts a fire field, and I use a blast finisher in it to give everyone might will it last longer if I have more boon duration specced?

Or does the duration depend on the caster?

-I know the staff is awesome.
-I know Dagger/Dagger is the vanilla Ele.
-I personally use the Scepter, and enjoy the hell out of it.

… But what about the Focus?
I know it has good defensive benefits, but is it worth it over the Dagger offhand? Does anyone ever go Dagger/Focus or Scepter/Focus and if so, why do you prefer it? What kind of builds could viably incorporate a focus without too much damage sacrifice?

TBH I spotted a thread like this in the Elementalist sub-forum and thought it was a brilliant idea.

  • Moves with CAST TIMES such as Mantras, Staff 3, ect. do not leave you totally helpless if you’re properly equipped. Staff 2 & 4 (Phase Retreat/Chaos Armor), F1-4 Shatters & Blink can still be used without breaking the cast (Shatter 4, Distortion, is great for defense. You can always pop Chaos Armor (Staff 4) under any circumstances (Revives, communing with a Skillpoint)
  • Shatters 1 (Mind Wrack for damage) & 2 (Cry of Frustration for confusion) are generally OFFENSIVE. Shatters 3(Diversion for Daze) & 4 (Distortion for… uh, Distortion) are more useful DEFENSIVELY
  • Popping Diversion (Shatter 3) for the daze with 3 clones will still only give 1 second of daze. To get 3 seconds, try and place your Clones/Phantasms at different distances, so that they run and shatter on the target at different intervals. iWarden and iWarlock are great for this as they tend to be stationary.

- The “i” in iSwordsman, iWarlock, iBerzerker is short for “Illusion” … Believe it or not some people do not know this.

Ah cool!

How many/much stacks of what kinds of boons can I get out of Scepter/Focus (& whichever Utility Powers you’d suggest). All I know of is might for now.

I know this is a REALLY specific question, but please bare with me.

Scepter.. 5? I thought only Scepter 3 could confuse.

Ele is my second character I’m leveling and I’m loving the Scepter/Dagger combination for the 4 blast finishers (5 if you have Arcane Wave). I was wondering if there was a way I could make a decent-damaging build while being able to maintain many stacks of Might/Protection/ect for long periods of time. Right now I can get 15 stacks of Might if I close my eyes, click my heels, and try harder than I do in my irl job.. but I’m hoping I can squeeze more stacks out of this. (Only hit level 10 now, but I’m hoping to do this for PvP and WvW, as well as PVE)

Any advice would be appreciated.

Scepter Mesmers are a very rare breed, but I know they’re out there. I was wondering what kinda strategies/builds people create with the scepter in mind. I can’t see much use for it beyond Scepter 3.

The counter blocks a hit, but the rest of it’s animations leave you dangerously open and it’s autoattack doesn’t seem to spawn clones quick enough to be very useful, but I admit to being very ignorant of the scepter fighting style.

I love my Mantra Healer build, nice damage and unparalleled survivability. Works BEAUTIFULLY with Staff as you can pop 2 and 4 in the middle of charging.

Unfortunately Menders Purity only KINDA works. When you use Mantra of Healing, each time you spend a charge you can remove a condition (& with Dwayna Runes, you’ll also give AOE regeneration, which’ll give you protection). But the preparing any Mantra doesn’t proc Menders Purity.

Still, since Mantra of Recovery can cure conditions and recharges every 10 seconds, its good to have Mantra of Concentration (stability to charge the other mantras OR revive without being interrupted)

Is that 30% chance to heal others on a crit, or after each attack or.. whenever I heal?

Around 1300+ Healing Power is needed. Your ability to Regenerate will be just as important as your AOE heals. Cleric’s or Magi’s gear will get what you need.
