I thought this had happened to me too. However i turns out that the first day’s chest is for 100 points, and the first chest in the list on the achievements panel is the NEXT chest you will receive. SO after opening your 500 one, you get different rewards and the first one in the list changes to 1000

Okay, so the email from Marjory tells me to search for the Ogre tracks leaving the crime scene. Are there actually any tracks, cos I can’t seem to find any in the vicinity!?

I should add that I have no idea what happens with the sigils that give a permanent +X to a particular stat. I guess you only get half the stat boost, but I’ve never used any of them to be sure.

There’s still a 50% chance of the effect happening, whatever the trigger is.

So for Bloodlust or Corruption, you’d get one stack for every 2 kills, assuming the other sigil was different.

Basically, the best way to think of it is that if you put the same Sigil on your Main and Offhand weapons, the effect will happen as expected. If you put different sigils on them, then you still get both effects, but they will only happen half as often as they usually would.

The advantage of this is that you can actually get more effects, just less consistently. So for example, if you had Battle and Bloodlust on one set of weapons, and Battle and Corruption on the other, then you could build up 25 stacks of both power and condition damage, as well as having a 50% chance of getting your might stacks on weapon swap. You’d have to kill more creatures to do it, but you’d get there in the end!

If you’re using different sigils on your main and off-hand weapons then the individual effects only fire 50% of the time.

So with Battle, you’ll get your three stacks of might 50% of the time, and the other times you’ll get whatever the effect from the other sigil is.

The reason this happens is so that you don’t gain an advantage by using a one-handed weapon and an offhand over using a two-handed weapon. You can only ever have one sigil on a two-handed weapon, so it would be a bit unfair if you only got one effect where dual-weapon wielders got two.

It appears the same thing happens for the “Centurions Claw” dagger skin as well. It’s worth noting that if you preview directly from the Kimmes merchant window, the correct icon shows, but if you preview from the item once you’ve obtained it, you get the generic icon. Weird huh!

I’ve tested the “Gnarled Walking Stick” and “Wayward Wand” as well, and those both behave properly and the icons are retained when the skin is used.

When I obtained the “Chimeric Prism” skin from Kimmes the Historian, it had a nice funky blue icon which looks like the prism. However, once I used it on my “Berserker’s Pearl Conch”, the nice icon went away, and I am stuck with the generic focus icon in the UI. The weapon looks correct on my character, but I keep nearly selling it by mistake because it now looks like something rubbish. The generic icon displays in the preview window as well, if you try to preview the original skin item.

We’re comparing external feedback with our own, since we have plans for Trahearne and other existing characters in future live updates and expansion content. We won’t spoil what we’re discussing, other than to say we’re looking at many different options for his current implementation and beyond.

As long as all the options involve him dieing horribly as soon as possible, all will be well…

I have played an Asuran, Order of Whispers character to completion. Loved all the Asura stuff, the Order stuff was okay, then it just got very dull indeed.

Human Noble not too bad.

Enjoying Charr Iron Legion very much.

You introduce all these nice mentors early on, who actually have some character, then relegate them to the dungeons…

EDIT: I checked actual currency exchange and it seems that purchasing in pounds is cheaper than purchasing in euro (8.50£ is 9.89€ actually) so, purchasing in euro is always a loss at the moment considering that 10$ are 7,5€.

Ah, interesting – I hadn’t rechecked the GBP exchange rates. It was the other way round at launch by a significant margin.

Correct me if i am wrong but Anet are not selling anything in particualr, they sell virtual currency. I do not know how you define virtual currency in terms of taxing but im sure there would be no export tax applied. So, they can only charge VAT to their UK customers if they are selling locally, but if they export their product, which in fact they are doing they cannot charge VAT. All in all not very legit…

VAT is applied to pretty much any thing you sell, not just physical items. If I pay a plumber to come and fit a new bath, the plumber has to charge VAT on his labour time too. So virtual currency sales would be taxed as per anything else.

There are weird rules within the EU which mean that exporting to another country in the EU is not treated the same as exporting outside the EU completely. However, If ANET are selling to consumers outside of the EU, then no, they should not be charging VAT, even if the price is in Euros.

A lot of companies conveniently forget this fact, which tends to annoy people in Switzerland amongst other places, which are in Europe but not in the EU. NO idea what ANET do.

My point was that people get angry that they’re paying a lot more than the currency conversion alone would justify, whereas in fact when the VAT is taken into account, the difference is much smaller.

If ANet continually adjusted the Gem prices based on the current exchange rate to get an exact dollar to Euro match, then it would be an accounting nightmare.

There was a post about this from Mike O’Brien when the same question was raised just after release.

US dollar prices are displayed exclusive of sales tax, which is then added on to the price you pay later in the checkout process.

Euro prices are displayed inclusive of VAT, which is charged at 20% because ArenaNet’s EU operation is based in the UK, which has %20 VAT rate.

10 Eur / 1.2 = 8.3333333 Euros.

So Arenanet get 8.333 Euros when you spend 10.

Current exchange rate is 1 dollar = 0.75 Euro. When the game launched mid 2012, the exchange rate was actually 1 Dollar = 0.8x Euro, very close to what the 1 to 1 conversion works out at without the VAT.

It would be unwieldy to continually adjust prices based on exchange rate fluctuations, so 1 to 1 seems to me to be a perfectly sensible conversion.

At this juncture I should point out that if you buy in GBP, then you are getting the short end of the stick, because in that case they are charging more than just the cost of the VAT extra.

Yeah, first time it happened for me I wondered if they were supposed to be glow worms or something and I’d just had my graphics settings not showing all effects. Took me a while to work out it was actually the ropes glowing neon green!

I have recently begun having problems with some objects in the world glowing extremely brightly when they shouldn’t. As I move my camera around they tend to flicker in between the glowing state and what they should look like. As soon as the camera stops moving it tends to stabilise in the brightly glowing state though.

Screenshot shows it happening on some Hay Bales in Diessa Plataue, but it also occurs on the ropes of the walkways in the Cliffside Fractal.

(Was happening prior to the latest patch, but only started happening relatively recently.)

My Norn female hair style defies the laws of gravity. This causes major clipping issues with pretty much any shield in the game.

Screenshot includes a bit without shield, so you can see how it floats magically in the air!

Note that this particular shield is actually further away from the character in game than it is in the hero panel, but the previous shield I had looked this bad in game as well. Drove me mad seeing my hair bobbing about through the shield :-(

I imagine it’s going to make no practical difference – you’ll still just run around spamming F, but it might make it easier to spot loot you might have missed that’s worth picking up.

At launch the planks only required 2 logs, the same as for metal and fabric. As I recall, there ended up being a vast surplus of wood on the TP, such that the log value dropped to vendor price.

They then upped the requirements for planks and removed the surplus from the economy using some short term Mystic Forge recipes.

No idea why one of the tiers requires 4 rather than 3 though. I guess they did some maths on the gathering rate of each type of wood and picked the numbers accordingly.

This has made a nice positive difference, even on my 4:3 screen. Thumbs up!

Now can you please let me move the camera height up a little, so I can see more than just my large Asuran head/back when trying to look up! (See screenshot – it’s slightly better with the improved FoV, but still not great. Failing that, just making my character go transparent sooner in the process and to a greater degree would help :-)

How can you tell if you’re getting the bonuses or not?

I remember in Beta that they all showed up as Buffs above your skill bar. Does this still happen, as I have not seen anywhere else on the UI which indicates that I’m getting them?

Prices in the US are displayed BEFORE sales tax is added. So a customer in the US will always pay more than the advertised price. Exact amount will depend on how large the sales tax is, which usually varies by state. I have no idea how this is handled for internet transactions.

Prices in Europe/UK are displayed AFTER sales tax is added (VAT).

ArenaNet’s European operation is based out of the UK, so the VAT rate is 20% for both Euro and GBP transactions.

Advertised US dollar price for 800 gems: 10.00 dollars
Advertised Euro price for 800 gems: 10.00 euros
Advertised GBP price for 8000 gems: 8.50 GBP

US dollar price after adding 20% sales tax: 12.00 dollars
Euro price converted to US dollars: 13.03 dollars
GBP price converted to US dollars: 13.72 dollars

So if you use the $12 price as the base for comparison, it’s not such a big difference.

It’s also worth bearing in mind that currency conversion rates vary over time, with the Euro being more volatile than GBP at the moment. When I ran the same numbers during one of the Beta weekends, the Dollar and Euro prices were almost equal, and the GBP price was a little lower than it is now.

It’s not feasible to keep changing the Gem prices as currencies fluctuate. The 1 dollar = 1 Euro ratio makes sense, because this comes out somewhere close depending on what the Euro exchange rate is doing this week.

The GBP to dollar exchange rate has been reasonably stable for the last couple of years though, so on the face of it the GBP prices are higher than they need to be after taking sales tax and currency conversion into account.

This should come as no surprise to anyone given how we’re always shafted in the UK on this sort of thing, but it’s not as extreme a difference as it appears on first inspection. Should be more like £7.50 rather than £8.50.

I’m running through my Jewelcrafting, and seem unable to discover a recipe I think I should be able to.

At Jewelcrafting 125, I am able to discover jewels made of:

1x Silver Filigree
1x Lump

I can discover the jewel recipe for 6 of the Lumps, but not the Spinel one. Is this a bug?

Is there any chance you could remove the “Community coordinator” posts from showing up as red and in the Dev tracker.

The vast majority of their posts are of the “This discussion has reached is conclusion, I will now close this thead” type, which are of no interest to anyone.

By all means let them have a different coloured name, but flagging their comments in the same way as the ArenaNet staff means the useful posts get lost in the moderator spam.

Okay, so in my journal, the following items are mentioned:

Split Second – Prospectus

Unholy Grounds – Iknui’s Spear

I did not receive any of these items after completing the associated story quest. Am I supposed to have, or is there somewhere I pick them up from afterwards?

As an antidote to previous posts, I would like to add that I completed Claw Island as an Elementalist at lvl 50 without too many problems. It was harder than the previous missions due to all the respawning enemies, but rather enjoyable for being so.

For anyone who is not aware, when you’re downlevelled your gear is as well, relative to your level. So if you are lvl 60 with lvl 55 gear, you might end up playing as a level 50 with lvl 46 gear for example. You would be amazed at the difference those few levels can make, so if you’re struggling with a mission, make sure to upgrade all your kit so it matches your actual level.

I usually try to upgrade my armor every 5 levels, but by the time I’m getting near to the next set of upgrades my sub-par gear can make a noticeable difference.

Anyone else having problems with the “Deadly Force” Iron Legion mission?

I’ve destroyed the trebuchets with the cannon and then shot at ghosts for about 10 minutes, but nothing else happens…

I just want to be able to craft items I'll use as I level.

Seconded. It seemed to me that the drop rate was much better balanced during the Beta Weekend Events, because I was able to keep my crafting more or less in sync with my level. The same was true for the first 10-15 levels I played my character after release, using Tailoring and Artificing.

However, it appears they may have changed all the drop rates with a badly thought-out patch for cooking materials, which has messed up the balance for all other crafting professions. I’ve now given up levelling my crafting as I go along, due to a chronic lack of fine crafting materials, and not enough fabric scraps either. Is a shame, because I was really enjoying doing it and making my own gear.

Note to Arenanet: Hasty balance changes without doing the maths properly really aren’t a good idea…

Nice post.

The main issue for me is the way that the camera zooms madly in and out all the time. As far as I can tell the system draws an imaginary line back from the middle of your character to where the camera should be. If it comes across anything it thinks is solid along that line then it moves the camera towards the character until it’s in front of the object.

The problem is that pretty much everything in the game counts as a solid object except for small plants and underwater weeds. So if you have a fence which is 90% see-through with a few posts, the camera keeps trying to zoom in when you go past all the posts.

What it needs to do is to ignore these objects and just let them pass between the camera and the character. We don’t need to be able to see our character 100% of the time. As it is sometimes you can get yourself in a position where you just can’t look around, or even up in the air properly without finding your view an inch from your character’s head.

I don’t remember the problem being quite so bad in Beta, so not sure if they’ve changed something, but it seriously needs sorting out.
