Delivering death, swift and clean, you try to fight back but I remain unseen.
I only go in ascended gear, if you run fractals your answer is clear.

We can all agree that the general thief player is looked up to if they seem to be good at killing other players. But, what is the general opinion of seasoned PvE thieves? It seems to be evident that PvE is waved away or shrugged off when it comes to a measure of a players worth. Though I feel that some instances, especially for a thief, can’t be done by just anybody. Also to add, we are hated in dungeon groups, in general. At least from what I’ve read. I have personally never had a problem getting a PUG group (and I’m full zerker lol, just don’t say anything and they’ll think you are). In dungeons, minus the very first time (obviously) I’ve proven to hold my worth better than other classes that should be better. And I’m sure many of you have as well. But I’m rambling on at this point, to the main point of the thread:
Shouldn’t we respect PvE thieves as well? Some dungeons are flat out notorious. Not to mention our class isn’t exactly PvE friendly. I feel as though we give too much attention to the PvPers. And yet some of us do this content regularly at least clearing our name for the others behind them instead of being just another statistic. We should see some more PvE vids.
Thiefs are an interesting class. We are disliked in PVP for being too good and disliked in PVE for being “Bad”. But we are one of 3 top tier PVE classes in Arah, and harder instances. In lower level, easy runs we are considered bottom tier though. It’s kind of funny. I’ve had entire groups drop at my feet while the glory that is my perma evade DPS build soloed the bosses in the run.
First, I have to thank Bugnutin for bringing this up to me (not personally) in his ‘new gw2 competitors’ thread.
___________________________________________________________________What do you think of Clue Scrolls or rather Treasure Maps?
You know, those maps that give you assignments and at the end show a ‘hidden’ place where a treasure chest lies. This is something that takes you away from the fighting and the zerging in GW2 and let’s you relax and solve a clue which in the end rewards you with (nice) stuff. There could be different tiers of scrolls, Tier 1, Tier 2, Tier 3 and maybe even a hardcore Tier 4. They have a dropchance of 0.5-5%.
- T1 treasure maps: There are 3 assignments you’ve to do in order to get the treasure chest.
Dropped by: a list of selected mobs such as bandits, flame legion mobs, jellyfish, etc.
Rewards:
- 25 Common crafting materials
- 50 Silver coins
- Random common tonic
- 10 common nourishments
- 25% chance of getting a rare piece of armour or a rare weapon
- T2 treasure maps: give you 5 assignments.
Dropped by: certain mobs in all dungeons.
Rewards:
- 50 Common crafting materials
- 1 Gold coin
- Random common tonic
- An exotic rune (not the extremely expensive ones)
- 25% chance of getting an exotic piece of armour or an exotic weapon.
- You can get an additional mini chest (random loot) when you complete the dungeon you got the T2 treasure map from, again within 24 hours.
- T3 treasure maps give you 7 assignments.
Dropped by: can only be dropped by dungeon/end bosses (tequatl, shadow behemoth etc).
Rewards:
- 25 rare crafting materials
- 5 Gold coins
- An exotic rune and an exotic sigil (not the extremely expensive ones)
- A chance of getting a rare tonic
- 100% Chance of getting an exotic piece of armour or an exotic weapon
Now, I’m not quite sure about T4 scrolls, as we need more content for it. Let’s say it’s for in the future.
- T4 treasure maps give you 9 assignments and are different than the previous ones.
Obtained by: They are acquired (100% chance) by slaying elder dragons. That means you can only get 6 scrolls per character, assuming all the dragons (+ the new expected one) can be fought in combat in the future.
Rewards:
- A piece of untradable legendary armour (this is a nice way to introduce them to the game)
- 10 Gold coins
- 5 Transmutation crystals.
- 50 rare crafting materials.
- An exotic rune and an exotic sigil (again, not those extremely rare ones).
- You also get a mini elder dragon of your choice when you’ve completed all 6 scrolls.
Assignments could be:
- Mimic the emotions of a mime.
- Use a sextant and compass to locate the chest location that either contains the reward or is a new assignment.
- Solving puzzles, be it juming puzzles, or those puzzles where you have to slide pieces around to create an image.
- Solve a riddle or a question (i.e. “How many sections does Divinity’s Reach have?” or whatever harder questions.)
- Win a (drinking) contest against an NPC to get new assignments.
There are, however, a few general rules:
1. You can’t get a new clue scroll if you already have one of the same tier. Either complete it or delete it to get a new one.
2. You cannot buy or trade scrolls on the trading post, you can’t BUY them with currencies either.
3. Clue scrolls are account bound. That means that when you loot one on one char, you can solve it with another char of yours. The legendary armour pieces, however, are soulbound upon completion of the T4 scroll.I think this would add a new dimension to the game and it will make it even more fun.
I’m crazy about this, idea, but will it fit in GW2? Is this realistic? What could the negative or positive effects be on the economy and players? I would like to hear more from you.
Thanks for your time.
Or one tier with an unlocked BLC at the end.
I apologize in advance, but this is going to be a wall of text with a pretty academic discussion. I just need to get this off my chest.
Does anyone remember dungeons during beta? Anyone remember Kholer before they nerfed AC? Those were good times… I recall Anet talking about their intentions for combat pre-launch, saying they wanted gameplay to be very visual. They didn’t want people staring at UI bars. They wanted you reacting to things in the world and watching boss animations for cues.
But then Particle effects quickly became a problem that never got truly fixed. Anet has had to make compromises in game design. They have had to sacrifice their ideals in order to make gameplay practical.
Kholer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DWeC2LtL7IAt 0:25 you can see Kholer pull his sword back slowly with a white/black charge-up effect, just before sending out his grappling hooks. You are meant to see this visual cue and dodge appropriately, because the damage after being pulled in is usually fatal.
Dark Souls – Asylum Demon:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHbUnaieRPcAt 0:22, and pretty much throughout the fight, you can see the boss pull his hammer back slowly before slamming it down. It is a clear visual indication that the boss is about to do something, and you should take appropriate measures to avoid damage.
These are examples of anticipation. One of the 12 principles of animation, it is an important element that lets the audience know that something is about to happen. In GW2 anticipation has become nonviable as a means to warn players.
*See my attached screenshot below when I reference “what GW2 has become.” *
Rather than continue to emphasize anticipation in animation as a means to telegraph attacks, Anet has implemented these neon-orange, super bright geometric shapes which are almost a complete rip off of Wildstar’s telegraphing system. Sure, Carbine didn’t invent colored geometric shapes, but that’s not the point of this thread. The point is to bring up discussion about the future visual quality of video games in general. It is my hope that Anet thinks twice about continuing the current trend.
Lupicus in the Arah dungeon (every explorable path) is a heavily visual fight. I recommend it if you’ve never done it.
True fact: All of the terrible players on Guild Wars 2 are EX-Runescape Players.
I’m an ex Runescape player, almost 120 dungeoneering 10 99’s and I can solo Lupicus in this game, am I still bad?
I finally managed to find my type of build for my thief with the “Ring of Red Death” (infused) and i think would be great to have the double, so i spend 35 laurels and then infused it and then i used a versatile infusion, to realize that i can only use one, i thought unique was just a “tag” or something like that because i could buy another of the same ring, all that for nothing unique should be explained in the game or a red label saying that you can only use one at the same time, it is called unique but it can be sold for less than 5 silver
You can get a crystalline band (the defensive version) from fractals without spending laurels.
So a couple of “unofficial servers” are RPing and that why I see none on Henge Of Denvari? And I find it hard to believe there is a big group of RPers. and yes SWG was best game of all time for ANYTHING not just RP. RIP SWG
From what I can tell most RPers do it in their guilds only to not disturb other people or something. While it is polite it’s not necessary
Indeed likely what will happen… really love the market in this game, one of the more fun to play. Well until you realize it has taken you 30min to do something that would take 2min in pretty much any other game. Perhaps this time when I leave I’ll send my 2000 or so gold to a friend so I’m not tempted to come back. lol
HI friend! But yeah that anti bot thing drives me insane too.
I re-roll classes for the keys. I find it fun and a challenge to do level 10 missions on a level 4, and seeing as I have 3 80’s I’m trying out different weapons with new professions trying to decide on my next class. It’s between warrior and Ele ATM.
How you’re able to determine a class is fun to play after 4 levels (no traits, no utilities, white gear) and doing the same thing over and over again is beyond me, but more power to ya.
Oh I run each race/weapon set on each class one at a time until I get an overall feel for it. I know utilities and whatnot have a lot to do with the actual feel but I’m getting a good idea of it. D/D Ele is almost as fun as my thief! I prefer classes by weapons and combat style more than utilities, I don’t use my utilities very much. But I am not really a fan of the warrior but it’s just so META and I want another heavy so I can get T3 heavy for an Asura.
If anyone wants to key farm commoners human story with a warrior great sword is the fastest or a DD thief if you’re good with that.

If I could make an argument for a Bronze league server…AR was left for dead at the start of season 1. By utilizing a server wide TS and playing tenacious defense, we managed to place 5th in Bronze league. Now we face the same uphill battle as before except servers will not underestimate of us at the start of season 2.
For a Bronze league server we do have a strong OCX/SEA presence yet NA mornings your guild will have their hands full. NA prime during resets can be rough but steady after that. Bronze isn’t the ghost town it is perceived to be and AR would appreciate the help at those times.
I’m not in charge of recruiting or anything but BlackGate needs more coverage to compete with the JQ with it’s new SoR guilds
(edited by Corpse Flakes.5369)
So basically people are still suckered into buying BLK’s… I never will understand why…
Nor I, Zudet. Though there does still seem to be a constant influx of new players who have not been burned by them yet and have to learn the lesson from their own experiences. I know there are also those who do not mind how the keys and chests work, or actually enjoy they way they work due to their desire for all those boosters that are actually of value to them. Some actually enjoy the gambling aspect of them. To each their own. Personally, I’ll continue to get my chest skins from the TP even though I know their even being available on the TP requires others to open chests. However, with so many players running the personal story key farm circuit for the sole purpose of getting these skins to put on the TP, I know that no keys even had to be purchased for them to be made available on there. Unless Anet nerfs the farming ability of keys or revokes the ability to trade the skins, I know they will always be available on the TP.
Personally, I don’t understand how people can reroll characters and spend the 30ish minutes to get ONE freaken key. Do people realize to buy one key, it costs $1.50 right? That translates to $3.00 an hour. Pick up some extra hours at work and just buy the kitten key, so that way you can actually PLAY the game… Do a dungeon with friends, events, or whatever, while earning gold at the same time! Hey! In one hour of key farming, someone gets up to 2 keys. In one hour at my job, I can buy about 35 keys (I’m not trying to brag whatsoever, just trying to prove a point). Yeah I’ll take the cash shop way.
The one thing I will not do is convert gems I buy for cash into in-game gold. My gems are strictly for special event novelty stuff and skins only through the gemstore. In fact, I don’t even sell the skins I get from the BLC; I just use the tickets I have to get the weapon skin I want from the trader. I do some TP flipping while running a couple hours of dungeons a few times a week and get plenty in-game currency that way.
I re-roll classes for the keys. I find it fun and a challenge to do level 10 missions on a level 4, and seeing as I have 3 80’s I’m trying out different weapons with new professions trying to decide on my next class. It’s between warrior and Ele ATM.
Let’s be practical here. This just shows why the WARRIOR needs to be toned down. People defending they aren’t op, they either have a warrior character, or think other class are underpowered.
I main a warrior and let me tell yah a little secret.
the reason warrior is preferred is not because it is the highest damage dealer in the game, it just so happens that warriors have high enough damage that can be pulled off a lot easier than others, and we do not die as easily.I’m now playing an elementalist and the crap I pull of with my elementalist is a lot crazier than what I can pull with my warrior, I just have to be a bit more aware of my surroundings and chain skills that is all.
From my perspective when I’m on my elementalist I’m grinning and saying to myself, and they call us warriors OP, yeah right !
Your ele is a lot crazier yes, but also lowest hp and armor class in the game. Low tier in pvp too. Compare that to a warrior?. Who is crazier now?
Like I said before, people either defending warrior because they have a warrior character (Your main warrior lols
) or think other class are underpowered.
Thief and Guardian have lower health. Just saying
We don’t ALL want be bored kittenless!
If you’re bored on your warrior, perhaps it’s your own fault for not doing anything interesting?
http://www.twitch.tv/purpleishawt/c/3840557
Most people who play on warriors probably don’t melee this guy. Try it. It’s fun as hell, requires fast reflexes, and has high intensity especially with an inept guardian.http://www.twitch.tv/purpleishawt/c/3840580
Most people who say things like “warriors are boring faceroll classes” or anything of the like are likely having in mind group dungeons. If this isn’t the case for you, then fair enough.Try soloing them. It’s a completely different experience and is much more than just autoattacking with axe mainhand.@OP
I don’t hate other classes and I have no issue with rangers specifically other than the fact that the vast majority of the ones I’ve encountered were all morons. Realistically, it’s just the idea of people feeling the need to safely range everything from a distance that irritates me. A ranger with a bow is by no means no worse than a mesmer with a greatsword or a guardian using staff for PvE. Sorry you have miserable experiences with pugs but believe it or not so do I, and all I play on is my warrior. The only class that truly is awful in PvE by comparison to any other class no matter what, is the necromancer. I feel bad for the people that main them… it’s not their fault that their class was designed poorly.
I don’t understand. My Necro absolutely face rolls dungeons, I’ve soloed Arah P3 on it in under an hour. Why is there so much necro hate?
I main thief though not necro.
What: The name ‘Thief"
Why: It is the shortest profession to type into the chat and therefore a team can tell their ’thiefs’ to go to point A faster than the opposing team can tell their warriors to go to point A. This is absolutely unfair.
Let’s change the name to Shadow-Heros!
Look at the video in my sig, tell me if it’s what you are wanting. If so feel free to PM me in game and I’ll help out.
I don’t have access to it on mobile so I’ll take a look in a few hours
I was in JINX for a while they’re pretty great. Things just didn’t work out for me, you should join! They just didn’t need a thief at the time so I left.
(edited by Corpse Flakes.5369)
Hi guys, I have a warrior but I like the style of the theif more. Assuming that I dodge everything perfectly and survivability isnt an issue (lol) what percent dps do you lose as a theif compared to a warrior in dungeons / fractals?
Assume my group is an exp pug, ie mostly zerker but definitely ranging a lot of fractal bosses (does thief sb tie with warrior lb o_O?) , stacking in dungeons so no reliable backstab , etc etc
Any rough estimate would be appreciated, ty in advance!
(My personal guess is 50%)
I’d have to say thief Pistol Pistol easily out dps’s longbow and rifle. I can Unload almost constantly (pistol pistol 3) and it’s about 10k per unload.
As for melee S/P thief or D/D thief can out DPS warriors if traited 25/30/x/x/x
What type of content is this for? Because S/D, while being a decent weapon-set, only really has a clearly defined role in sPvP.
If you are talking about WvW then S/D doesn’t really have a clearly defined play-style. You can build on evade-spam, which would require 20 points in Acrobatics but there are other ways to play it too.
I’m planning on roaming in WvW I guess I’m looking for a more sustain build.
Oddly specific I know but my last guild just transferred so I’m not sure where to go from here. Not really willing to transfer servers. I main a thief but have a guard and necro and upcoming warrior. Reply here or message me in game. Well I realized the only real “WvW” guilds are pretty much full or close to it on their rosters but is gladly join any guild with at least a little WvW presence. It doesn’t have to be every night but more than once in a month or something.
(edited by Corpse Flakes.5369)
I need help with a S/D build. I’m going to run atleast 10 in the power line for mug but I don’t know where to go from there.
I have Berserker/Valkyrie. Full knights. And full soldiers.
I’ve never run an S/D build but I’d like to.
Edit: it’s mainly for WvW roaming.
(edited by Corpse Flakes.5369)
Ok. More complains about thiefs. Thiefs are Damage, and Evade, that’s it. We exist almost solely for PVP. And we don’t handle much more than 2-3 targets too well. We have high single target DPS, and literally nothing else. Why should Ele’s, arguably the best support class in the game, be better than thiefs at the ONLY thing we do?
but I can guarantee you that the VAST najority of the players in gw2 would gladly have balance classes over toxic, unbalanced, annoying classes such as thieves currently.
That statement is equal bias as you should only speak for yourself not the vast “najorities”
Please show me a thread where people want classes to remain unbalanced and toxic.
You know, maybe the bias is not in the fact people might want or not the presence of toxic unbalanced classes, but that the thief is toxic and/or unbalanced in the first place.
And if thieves get nerfed to the point that they’re no longer “considered” the best roamer? Where will they go after that?
Then thieves will have to compete with Elementalists and Mesmers for the role of roamer on the team.
Then we may see more diverse team compositions. OH THE HORROR!
Then it becomes a battle of group fight utility. Can thieves even compete with the class that is considered the closest GW2 has to a healer, and the class that was previously mandatory due to its extreme utility?
Thieves have plenty of utility. Shadow Refuge, for example.
And if you want to throw it in, venom share. You can share your heal with everyone around you.
This game would have been better off if the Thief class had never existed. Stealth in and of itself is inherently broken in most MMOs and giving one class access to a dynamic initiative system while keeping all others on a static cooldown system was a recipe for disaster.
Thief has to rely so much on stealth to get anything done as an old man has to rely on his cane. And personally I find the Thief class very unfun both playing one as well as playing against one as there is little to no counterplay involved.
Mesmerism have stealth. So do engies. I personally enjoy the play style, but I use D/D with a single stealth ability so there is that.
I want a hammer. Hammer thief would be fun as hell. Alas it’ll never happen.
I want an offhand sword fo sho, and a torch, or something with burning. Make it so when you stealth with a torch equipped you instead get protection or something
Yeah you blow fire at me and it blinds them or something like that. We’d have to find a way to work stealth onto the torch.
I use 20/30/0/20/0 for more evades and high damage, I play anti-squishy in my group.
Can someone give me the exact details of a nice simple team build (4-10 people).
I’d like to use Pvt armor but can buy runes, sigils, weapons and trinkets if need be.
Thanks
While everyone is saying not to use PVT armor they are ignoring your question. I suggest PVT of the Eagle, with full offense trinkets. Really it’s ridiculous that people are ignoring your “Id like to use PVT” part. With the PVT armor you can go offense trinkets and heavier offense stats.
Honestly everyone complaining about dredge makes me sad. It’s not that hard and I enjoy more difficult content. I would like more difficult fractal maps but since so many people complain I guess have them in the higher levels or a way to deprecate it because not everyone seems to be able to handle the harder content.
Dredge is by no means hard for a half-decent group, but the stupid clown car is a waste of time! There is NO challenge to it, you just sit there and press 1 to win. No challenge, no glory, just time consumed. Granted, the loot is decent, but I would rather skip those 5 minutes of boredom and move on.
Yeah that does make sense.
I had a discussion with my girlfriend over the last LS update. We couldn’t play at launch day but we did so yesterday. Idk if its because the past couple of releases were a zergy mess and its becoming too much to us but, what really happened to party play? A tight 5-man organized group where everybody matters? I miss this…the only organized party play is dungeons, which we’ve done thousand of times, and fractals, which we’ve done few hundred times already too.
I miss being important within my group. Those timers you guys put everywhere just force everyone to bring their berserker class, like seriously. And that 6 minute achievement adds even more to that. Its very hypocritical nerfing the berserker when your latest events require berserkers. But thats another topic anyway
And lately regardless of story I feel like just another pawn on the board, not the hero with 7k+ achievement points. And no making events forcing servers to organize will never work, some servers are really bad, and you can’t fix this.
Why don’t you add more LS dungeons? Like the aetherpath in TA. You can even add the map extension through a dungeon! We and many others want to feel heroic, that’s why we play games. I don’t want to zerg an event with 100 others, spamming my #1 attack because any condition would be reflected back at me, or projectiles
. But okay its a MMO, going around with an army of players is acceptable, but it shouldn’t be the only content you guys put out
We’re getting more and more frustrated. All that we can do to have fun is to repeat content we’ve already done hundreds of times. You have to agree with me that eventually it gets boring.
We love Guild Wars 2. The lore, the mechanics, the gameplay, the graphics … but after doing the same over and over for a little over an year now we are starting to get frustrated.
Please add some party content, where I can play with my friends, not with strangers. I don’t consider people in my server friends. Most of them are silly trolls anyway. I want dungeons, with new mechanics, not just steamrolling or skipping countless numbers of mobs.
Not to mention that this year some big hitter MMOs will be released in couple of months, which aligns with your living story break. Gw2 doesn’t have fresh content to stop possible player leak. We believe in Gw2, but please consider adding some party play content. Asking 100 strangers to organize is not fun. My server has never gotten the great wurm, nor its being organized because people gave up and simply choose to guest on this event. Same goes for Tequatl. That’s content which regardless of our playskill (i think we’re very good players), we will never experience, unless we guest to other server. If you think this is an “okay” mechanic (guesting for world bosses), you’re just being silly :/
TL;DR – Please add more party content, enough with the zerging.
P.S: Playing the event last night, my PC with OCed i5-2500k and R9 290X OCed managed to pull 8 fps in the knights fight. You can see why I and thousands of others despise the massive events.
If you plan on adding more zergy events, at least publish a PC configuration that can push at least 40 fps on fights like this one. Because honestly, as a tech-savvy user, I can’t imagine what kind of PC I will need to run this game properly. Dual CPU PC? Before the R9 290X I was using CrossfireX build, it was bad.
You could always try a tight-knit roaming group in WvW. A good 5 man group can take 10 out easily, and it’s pretty fun, if you enjoy PvE. Or you can practice just you and your girlfriend Duoing dungeons. That’s always fun.
Im still hoping the next class will be a heavy armor take on the warlock
We got a Good guy semi magic heavy
A neutral, all strength Heavy
Now we need a bag guy magic heavy.I want a bag Magic class too!
Necros!
Honestly everyone complaining about dredge makes me sad. It’s not that hard and I enjoy more difficult content. I would like more difficult fractal maps but since so many people complain I guess have them in the higher levels or a way to deprecate it because not everyone seems to be able to handle the harder content.
Here we go with another thread which causes me to feel woe for humanity.
“Lol zerk bads” “lol zerk no skill” “lolpvt4eva” y’all don’t seem to get that if it was sooooooo easy then everyone would be soloing Lupicus. But you aren’t, and you can’t, and it’s hard for some of us even in 5 player parties to do a fight in less time than a coordinated skilled player can solo.
I get that you don’t want to feel inferior…. But when you say stuff like this it’s just… Sad. :/
Edit: btw OP I think your idea is great.
Lupicus really isn’t that hard. I’ve soloed him on my Cleric/soldier Guardian, my Berserker/Valk thief, and my knights/soldiers necro. It’s not really even the armor it’s about knowing the fight.
We can’t dye weapons, back items or aquabreathers (even though item preview clearly shows that the breathers DO have dye channels) for the same reason that the Apollo spacecraft that went to the moon prior to Apollo 14 all had Square CO2 filters in the command module and round ones in the LEM…
They said back in the beta forums basically that the weapons were somehow designed differently from the armor, and in such a way that they were not able to add dye channels to them at that time, and that they were “looking into it as something that could be done after launch” love this…wish i could necro that response from the beta forums, but then again, the people running the show don’t appear to be the same as those who made it.
As I mentioned, some items…only aquabreathers that i know of 100%, but it’s there.. have dye channels, and have since launch, but the UI for them has never been added
Also: if I could dye my weapons, then I wouldn’t have to grind 2 sets of ascended weapons for a few characters (white/gold on healing?) to get nice skins without stats wasted on the characters who carry them. It would also mean i could get rid of the kitten -brown color off the otherwise quite pretty blue sets (stats still wasted, but just saying) and put white or something similar.
Yeah, I have a fractal sword, it’s my favorite item in the game but I’m not a fan of the color blue. But considering how nice the sword is compared to any other sword I run blue/white dyes on my armor. If I could have a red fractal sword I would be so happy. I’m just afraid of what will happen when I finish my incinerator.
What mmo lets you dye weapons
Neverwinter, Vindictus, and GW1 IIRC for a start.
Does anyone else wonder why you can’t dye weapons? I really don’t understand why we can dye armors without weapons. I care about how my character looks but I seem to have to run blue because my favorite weapon skin happens to be blue & silver. I know this seems petty but most MMO’s I know have this feature if I remember correctly. It just doesn’t make sense to me.
NeverWinter, Vindictus and I think Guild Wars 1 for starters since people have been asking for a list
(edited by Corpse Flakes.5369)
I would also like “light” “medium” and “heavy” armor filters.
I didnt really think about this til now but why are thieves the only class in the game that has a unique design. In terms of weapons, none of its weapons have a skill cooldown, they have a currency cost, called initiative. Why is it that every other class in the game must obey a time cooldown? Not that I am upset but it seems so trivial thieves have this pretty significant difference compared to every other class in the game. Why do eles and necros not have mana? and warriors and guardians have their own type of special skill currency? Or why didnt anet just decide to make thieves obey the same time cooldown restrictment that other classes did? I think its quite cool thinking about how immensely pvp and wvw would change if every class had a currency cost on skills compared to cooldowns.
Really thiefs are a class centered on breaking the traditional rules of this game. Their stealth makes them a viable Glass Cannon, high burst and extremely high movement and include their initiative. Their attacks deal less condition duration, higher damage, and they’re extremely high risk high reward with their extremely punishable initiative waste. Yes other classes can burn all of their attacks, but they can change weapons. We don’t have a different initiative pool for our other weapons the way other classes have other weapons. I’m not complaining just saying the counter point.
it doesnt really have anything to do with the philosophy behind thieves as much as the actually mechanic of the class initiative. id really like to know from the devs why they made this decision because it blatently separates thieves from every other class. i think thief skills need to be nerfed for this reason because of how initiative is a periodically regenerating currency(with traits and signets its super powerful) and the skills that use initiative are a little two powerful. Like heartseeker, and how you can spam it on an enemy about 7 times in a row lol. Thats a little off topic anyway.
You mentioned the traits and signets making it more powerful but that’s a single build and if they nerfed it that would be the only real useful setup. There is no reason to nerf a classes entire offense over one build.
I’ve been training myself to use D/D for WvW, so I’ve taken it against some of the most disadvantaged matchups in PvP duels. Obviously I lose – a lot. But hey, that’s fine; it’s the only way to learn, and I like to believe I still give people a run for their money.
So out of curiosity, I went D/P…
…And it’s adorable-kitten-full-of-cuteness AWESOME. (and I am so ashamed to admit that!)
Stealth whenever I needed, without needing to aim my CnD. Teleport facestab for easy burst. Mix it with D/D and who cares if I lack range? I’m practically leaping back and forth everywhere and destroying everything. Like what the heck? This is so OP!
So…what must I do to keep myself from devolving into the meta D/P nub teef that spam 2+5 and nothing else? I mean, using D/P with strategy isn’t….gimmicky, right? Right?
Please say right.
Use every ability when it’s needed and conserve initiative. Or spam 3 + AA with D/P it’s funny, does a lot of damage and keeps blind on.
Thief OP plz nurf.
Pls nerf OP 13.5k hp is too much.
Most people are saying Berserkers but that won’t cut it in WvW. I’d suggest knights or soldiers armor of the eagle with soldier earrings and berserker or Valkyrie rings/back/amulet. I have a meditation build I could link when I’m at my computer.
I run a soldier DPS build and can hit for 12k or so without might/stacks. I also have 6 heals, but I’m more gravitated towards WvW instead of dungeons.

D/P is so easy just run 0/0/0/0/0
I’m more upset with the fact one person cried about this and got an instant dev response than the actualy change. It feels so degrading to always be ignored when you present ele issues, whereas a single complaint from the recieving end gets adressed straight away…
Welcome to the world of thiefs.
Guardians, with shouts and staff can have perma swiftness. My guardian isn’t slow.
how many seconds do you stay in place for stacking your swiftness?
Actually none. I drop my circle and run and use a shout or two
Without any sort of boon duration, Staff + Retreat isn’t enough to get perma swiftness, I’m assuming you are using SY too, so you are basically using 2/3 utility slots (with long cd) for your swiftness.
Exactly.
Being a shout guardian it doesn’t really matter.
8/10 I like the name but for the lack of fire I don’t like Phoenix for a thief, I prefer to name my characters in a way that relates to the class. Had you been a guardian or something Id have given you a 10
Human Necromancer named Corpse Flakes

I run the standard 10/30/0/30/0. My gear is nearly complete zerk, expect 2 trinkets and my valk bow, but just because I found it.
But honestly, I think to switch all my trinkets to zerker and my armor to soldier after the patch next month.
S/D is really a lot of fun, even in wvw, it’s so fast-paced, and you really have to pay attention.
Give it a try. The few first times may be a little bit hard, because most thieves rely on stealth, and you have a bad access to it. But you will learn to use your movement to prevent damage, and that’s really great.
The next thing I have learned, is to use my shortbow more often and more effective.Your main source of damage, is the last hit from your aa, and lancarous strike. Try to hit with them. Your bursting potential is lower, but I kill people often as fast as with d/d.
.
I mainly dodge, my stealth is only for backstabs, so 1-2 seconds, I’ve run S/P before which is fun so I’m considering giving it a try.
I’ve always run a 20/30/0/20/0 D/D backstab build on my thief and I honestly don’t know where to start for S/D. I have Knights armor of the Wurm, Soldiers of Melandru, and a Berserker/Valkyrie ruby orb set of armor. My dagger will be Incinerator but I’m lost on what to actually DO trait wise as well as gameplay on S/D. What are the best attacks in WvW for roaming, or does bursting not work with S/D.
Personally is rather have an elite signet. Like reduced CC effects on its passive. Stability/regen/a stun break on activation
This has potential
Nothing serious maybe 30% stun/knockdown reduction time. Not immunity by any means. Since we have I think 3 stun breaks and one stability which is a different elite I would love this.
With the upcoming crit changes is wait, but for now if I were to make a set it would be Soldiers Helm Valk body shoulders and legs and Knights or Cavs gloves/boots. Of course my build will have runes of resistance and a 20/30/0/20/0 spec so that’s why I chose this setup. My trinkets are all ascended Cavs Backpiece Berserk+Valk rings/amulet with soldiers earrings. I suggest playing with a build editor and looking at your numbers.
Block on invisibility does not break stealth. The problem arises that even if you could predict the backstab and block, evade etc. It doesn’t matter as if the thief misses or fails on these attempts he can still keep on trying without any consequences.
Next is blind field plus leap. Problem is that as the thief leaps into and enemy and hits the player this does not break stealth. Hopefully I don’t need to explain why this is bad.
This is the only problems I have with the class. Hopefully I don’t get replies of how about I need to learn to play or such. Since I think that if most of the community has these complaints then it must be true.
Well with the first one thiefs really don’t have any defense, so we need a way to counter other classes defense. We have a base health of 10k the next lowest class a 15k IIRC. So we need something considering we can’t hit someone have the backstab fail, be revealed and stealth again immediately, stealth is our only real defense. They would have to make backstab not proc the revealed de-buff as long as it does if they failed.
The second point you made would involve them re-working the entire combo finisher system. There is no reason to do it, it’s part of the game mechanic for EVERY class, get over it. Anyone else could use a leap finisher through a smoke field, hit then be stealthed.
