no, no, no, pls no. You do know that map completion rewards are the best way to get mystic coins right? Not to metion the other rewards and exp gained from getting the completion.

In large groups in WvW, it’s completely about the staff. Attacking structures, defending them, etc. Meteor storm and healing rain alone are amazing.

That’s…. really it though. It has a few other uses but I have seen very few other instances where staff was superior to D/D, S/D, S/F

How about any group support role, dungeons, large events, general zergging….?
Soloing with staff is on par with any other weapon too, different but just as effective.

Staff is pretty awesome weapon….i donĀ“t understand how people get the idea that it sucks at just about everything.

Group support maybe, but only if it’s a group 10+

It’s terrible for dungeons. Seriously if you use it in dungeons you’re one of the reasons people are reluctant to take elementalists. Scepter/Focus is far superior in dungeons, offering more damage, more CC, and more utility.

I’m not sure which “large events” you’re talking about. If you mean the big events in Orr that spawn tons of mobs then D/D and S/D are much better as with a staff you won’t be able to tag that many mobs due to cooldowns/longer cast times.

If I am bringing a group of people to a dungeon with all finishers and no fields (or a very minimal set of fields, none of which being water), do you seriously think S/D is still going to be best? Don’t get me wrong, if I have a ranger or 2 in group I am all over my S/D but there are some groups who need the fields to play in just by their builds.

It is all subjective folks, and dependant and what is around you, it always has been and always will be.

I honestly will be shocked if the disparity between classes functionality and basic game mechanic awareness isn’t fixed.

There is absolutely no reason whatsoever that my husband who is a level 80 fully exotic geared gaurdian should have an HONEST answer of “What’s a field?” when I asked him how many he has.

It is complete and utter crap that the ONLY class in this game who is dependant or even cares about this games mechanics is the elementalist.

Not to dig on your husband, but if he is a Guardian and has no idea what his (and other professions’) fields are he really needs to take the time to learn.

As Guardian, I know full well most of my fields (and good number of those from other professions) . Hammer 1 chain 3 & 5, GSword 4 (or is it 3 now, ANet likes to move them around to mess with us), Mace 2, Staff 3 & 5. They are all Light fields. Hammer 2 will is a blast finisher causing area retaliation, GSword 3 is a projectile finisher that cures conditions.

Hammer 3 having such a short cooldown means Guardians can take regular advantage of blast fields more than any other profession. I see a water field, Hammer 3 AoE healing, I see a purple bubble, Hammer 3, Chaos Armor for everyone! And as a Hammer Guardian I am keeping retaliation up on my allies by using my Hammer 1 chain along with Hammer 2.


PS. As for your question, he’s got… 1, maybe 2. And they’re all on his longbow if I remember right. Maybe it’s not right to blame him for not knowing fields, but if he’s played with you long enough he should’ve at least realized how many finisher’s he’s got.

Guardians don’t have access to longbows, not sure where you got that from

I realize that his lack of taking his time to learn them is bad lol. My original point was How is any other class able to make it all the way to end game, get fully geared, and 100% map done, be nigh unkillable in PvP (I follow him around as he is like a brick wall and just smashes people), be highly survivable in end game zones all by himself to where he can farm nonstop, rarely dying, to build his gold stash to 10x what I could be capable of doing, all without understanding Game Mechanics.

That is the issue, not weather or not someone is bad (by opinion only, because seriously it isn’t that important to other classes) if they don’t take the time to learn. Why are other classes not as dependant on the games mechanics as elementalist? They either need to remove our overdepence on them or increase every other classess’.

Well, I spent my weekend (tues and wednesday) playing with what I guess would be some “glass connon” builds. With 30 points in Fire 30 in Air and 10 in Earth, I felt emensly squishy and my damage wasn’t increased by a whole lot when compared to my normal build. I tried other combinations while totaly disregarding water/arcane, I think one build had 10 water..The final conclusion I came to is that I will have to invest in different gear stat builds with these different specs. With a glass cannon trait build I will need all vit/prot with power/crit or w/e else, but the main is vit and prot. To be honest, I just can’t afford to get at least 3 sets of exotic gear right now, maybe some day heh.

All in all I think my normal build of 30 arcane 20 water and 20 earth with my gear (a balance of stats with exotics) feels best for now. Although once I am able to get my hands on a set of gear that has the stats I need to use with a glass cannon builds (vit and prot) I will give it another go.

In the end I really think it is all preferance as I don’t see the damage being a kitten ton more with glass cannon builds and I am just taking another way of providing myself with HP and Defense. 2 ways to skin a cat is what it feels like.

I am not asking for anyone to be nerfed, I am asking for every class to have the same amount of focus on comboing as the elementalist, if that means they have to be nerfed to compensate for them buffing themselves through combos then so be it. One class out of the 8 that are in this game being forced to use and understand the mechanics even to be half kitten viable is not acceptable in my view.

Gear is very build dependent, With every build you will need a different set of stats. The way I feel I must gear is so it provides what I lack when I spec my traits.

I found the skritt burglar! he popped out of a randomly placed chest and tried to run away…kind of like the treasure troll in diablo 3 but with WAY less treasure >.< he was still fun though, and I felt and uncontrollable desire to ensure his death even though I was dragging several mobs with while I chased him. great fun!

I enjoy the downleveling, and think it is one of my favorite things about this game, however I think the exp/rewards when you are down leveled need to be brought in line with the rest of the end game zones so that they ARE in fact a viable part of the end game. In line with this I feel they need to make the bonus from your max lvl gear/stats less by a large margin when you are down leveled, so that the zones still feel challenging instead of the facesmash they currently are when I visit them.

For me personaly, I feel I have reach a plateu that, with my life restraints, I cannot overcome, so my interest is dwindling.
I want to go after the legendary weapon, but it is too …MUCH.
I want to build my gold hoard…but I don’t have hours and hours and hours to spend farming for piddly, barely worth it rewards…
It is waning, I dont want it to, but it is. I have loved this game so far, I still cant wait to explore the areas of the map that are still covered, and when they bring them in, I will love every second of it.
However things in this game are just too far out of my personal reach and it is making me lose interest in the farming/chasing legendaries aspect, so why bother logging in on a daily basis when everything is out of my reach?

Boozer, I actually think I am going to take your advice on this and come up with a completely different build, taking traits that I have just been afraid to try so far. I might come out of my slump and start enjoying myself again. shrug

Maybe 30 air 20 fire 10 water =X …man thats just painful thinking about it.

….something fantasticlly different than what I have done so far.

I think other classes need to have a set of 4 attunements they need to switch between in order to buff themselves up via comboing just so they can be semi-viable. How many fields and finishers do YOu have? Do you even know?

Well, here’s my personal experience.

I loved the game ..I mean..I REALLY loved the game. I adore jump puzzles, I adore exploration. Every nook and cranny! I love it. But…what to do when I am done? I dreaded hitting 80, I dreaded finishing that last PvE map, I avoid WvW, and somehow it doesnt bother me…if I complete those maps, I am done..what drives me to log in after that? So, I don’t WANT to finish. =( so confused

But, exploration in the computer world is very,very limited. Unless the designers FORCE you to take it slow ie; an extreme drop in the rate exp is earned via kills/hearts/exploration or whatever.

My favorite all time game will always be vanguard. It was a shame how horribly bad the release was. I wonder if Anet would take it over and clean it up? =X

I’m currently working on crafting a legendary as well (The Dreamer) and the precursor costs more than the rest of the components all together.

While Venom is only at 15 gold. And I can’t really understand why. Is Kraitkin less attractive? Different droprates?

Anyway, I’m not gonna open 531599 chests in Orr, I’m not gonna throw 5135 exotics shortbows in the Mystic Forge and I am not going to buy The Lover for 300 gold. Looks like I’ll have to wait…

This is my opinion on the whole thing as well. It is an unatainable goal for me with my limited play time shrug It is rather discouraging though, I mean, once you accept something is beyond your reach, you begin losing interest.

So, what about addons ?

In WoW, you don’t play WoW, you play addons, which is why I HATE them. Also the entire reason Rift died for me…I began playing addons, instead of the game.

No one has mentioned Evasive Arcana (which I have heard is going to be nerfed?) I’m sorry but with a ranger or two in your group, as the one I run with has, evasive arcana makes us nigh unkillable, nothing like rolling around in their water fields for ~nearly~ endless heals.
I’m not too concerned about how quickly I can swap back into an attunement as for the most part my timing has become right in line with the cooldowns.
I guess when people become less dependent on healing (my normal group) and just take no damage I will feel more free to leave arcana (I really hate dying) Otherwise I am going to go into a high survivability build with gobs and gobs of blast finishers to cause massive aoe heals in water fields.

Like I have been saying all along, If they didn’t want to pigeon hole certain classes into certain roles (Ele as support more often than not) everyone should have been given the same amount of fields and finishers. As long as there are classes with literally 1 or 0 fields we will always be nothing more than a support class, the other classes need to be brought in line. I seriously think the developer who created Elementalist was the only one paying attention to mechanics as he thought out the abilities.

I also hate feeling trapped into 20-30 points in arcana. I really wish I could go for a different build, like TOTALY different build, but really as it is now we only have 40 to 50 points to everyone elses 70 to play with. I dont even know what the end of air/fire give, im so worried about arcana for stances and earth/water for survivability…if I am feeling daring I’ll go 10 water and go deeper in fire…but then I become squishy as all hell.

@Loic Compared to an Elementalist ..no ..other classes do not have the ability to combo with themselves to the extent that an elementalist does, because of the fact that they do not need to spend time stacking buffs to reach their maximum output, they kill faster and have more burst. They have very, very limited fields and finishers when you look at them, and so are not forced to the extent an elementalist is because we have access to them in such abundance, most only having access to maybe one field and a finisher to use in it by themselves, with everything else being a buff given with a specific ability. And you are right, if they were given the same ability to combo with themselves as an Elementalist they would be HUGELY overpowered, which is why our base damage is where it is and their is where it is. They need to nerf the base but make the same output attainable through comboing like the elementalist, and increase their weapon choices during combat to 4 instead of 2. Then everyone will understand what comboing is and why it is so important to the game.

The skill I developed in this game by starting with elementalist is very beneficial to me on other classes, this is why I can take my human ranger prancing through gobs and gobs of mobs and not even come close to dying, the same with my Necro i feel insanely overpowered and at the same time bored because..well..it is like taking the action of let’s say ..Defiler healing in early endgame EQ2, then suddenly you are a dps in WoW…that’s how extreme the difference is.

it was in EQ2, every race had their own language and if you did not have the quest complete to learn the language it was literal giberish to you in the chat window when they yelled at you or talked to you or w/e. Once you learned the language (it was a book collection quest back in the day IIRC) You could then speak it in the chat window and confound anyone who did not know it.

@Loic Well, it seems I did misinterperate your OP. I think Ele’s are fine, we have a lot of broken stuff that needs fixing. The fact that we are extremly dependant on the mechanics where other classes can go all the way to 80 never understanding or even caring why they are seeing all those floating hearts is what is wrong. Not the Elementalists’ game play. I wonder how much thier damage would be if they had to stack themselves with buffs via combos before they did anything substantial, or how quickly they would kill then?

I really think the OP was about how a warrior was far more efficient at killing MOBs than the OP’s Ele, and how the OP was upset about this fact. So it is basically a complaint that Ele’s are underpowered in PvE.

For what it’s worth though, I basically agree with what you say. It is hard for me to play non-Ele classes because none of them seem to be as fun. In fact, with my Ele, it hard for me to play anything but D/D because I find everything else fairly boring.

I did not read it the same as you, evidently. I read it as “This class is fun, why are the others so boring and easy and coddled by the game?”
Then again, I feel pretty much that other classes ignore the games major mechanics too much, I really think they need to be fixed and brought in line. Why them and not us? Because running in this game without using the mechanics provided for cc/support and healing would be like running in wow without a tank/healer. They are broken and oversimplified and it should be corrected. That’s just my opinion though. However, it is the entire reason people raged for so long and so hard about dungeons, once the mechanics were explained (normaly by an elementalist) a light bulb went on for them, I still struggle with some classes, they are just clueless, and that is why they are clueless, because their class doesnt need/want/care about mechanics.

I never really like mist form. I am constantly using armor of earth though, nearly on cooldown when I am nonstop pulling, and especially at the start of the fight. I use it almost always pre-emtively when it looks like i pulled too many or the fight will get rough with adds or w/e. For extra defense I like to run earth signet, otherwise I am switching out my last slot to whatever I like at that particular time shrug.
I like having it as a floating because a lot of our conjures are situational, I mean how short of work can you make of the ant hill type mobs with frost bow, eh?

@Creslin I dont see people complaining that their class is too hard or not functioning properly, I see people complaining that they are bored with other classes because they are not as interesting as the Elementalist. Where the Elementalist feels powerful and interesting, other classes feel oversimplified and overpowered.

There is an answer to this. Make every other class have 4 weapon sets to swap to at all times, making comboing necissary, giving 1 weapon set gobs of fields (two handed weapons maybe) and the others tons of finishers, maybe giving each set a focus on a specific finisher type (like ranger with bow is projectile) Make every other class as dependant on switching/combing weapons as elementalist is with switching /combing elements.

It feels like it should have been this way all along, maybe the developers again thought it would be too hard and decided to dumb it down? shrug seems like they like doing that if you ask me.

I will miss it SOOO much =( I only completed it the one time as I really haven’t had much time to play. I am SOOO very happy I got it done though and wish I could spend more time with it to do it again and again for my alts.

I will be very sad and disappointed if there isn’t more of the same for Wintersday festivities (just as hard), or if the clocktower is dumbed down=/. You cannot please all of the people all of the time. Dumbing it down will alienate another section of your playerbase. I do not play my 10 year olds’ games for a reason.

I’m sorry Focksbot but unless you are asking for him to give you a “practice” clocktower where you are there alone and there is no green goo, you are wrong, as others who have mastered it did not have that option and had to fight for their win. There are plenty of puzzles in this game where people can practice and fine tune their skills, Griffinrook run is a fine example.

People who are “bad” at jumping have ways to increase their skills, and an entire year to do so before the clocktower returns and they can try again. To belittle someones creation because they did too good of a job, is selfish and thoughtless, much like a spoiled 5 year old stomping their feet because they aren’t “this tall” yet and can’t ride, and leads us down a road where we have games like WoW at the end (in terms of difficulty)

I am sick and tired of games that coddle me, and was thrilled to finaly be playing a game that was trying to kill my character. I am tired of mush. Please stop demanding anything challenging be turned into a schoolyard swingset game.

I am still trying different things after I fell into a rut and became too dependant on 30 arcane 20 water 20 earth. Or the ever faithful 30 arcane 30 water 10 air.

My current experiment is 30 arcane 20 fire 20 water. I will change though again today and go with air instead of fire….

I need to escape the trap that is 30 arcane though =( I might just go completely different that what I am currently with earth/air/fire buwahaha! ;P

A christmas tree sounds amazing for christmas! I would definately attempt it until i either accomplish the task or go crazy trying. Just like I did the clocktower.

I don’t think the creator of the tower needs to feel bad, he created something that gave me the biggest challenge and biggest thrill I have had in ANY game for a long, long time. If anything at all needs to change it would be to transform everyone in the group to a uniformed sized creature.

Although I enjoy underwater emensly and really never had any issues completing anything, I DO agree that compared to other classes, we are incredibly weak with damage while under water.

I have laid it down to not being able to combo with ourselves, we have no way of buffing up with mights (or anything for that matter) as none of our abilities have fields or finishers. Why was this not included? It just exagerates the importance of combos for the Elementalist. Imagine how horribly weak we would be (or were, before we figured out the combos) if we couldn’t combo at all on land as well.

I was emensly proud and shocked and awed when I FINALY after 7 hours made it to the top. It ws a rare day off from work, AND I told the family ARGHH LEAVE ME ALONE, yes hubby was grumbly at me for it) But I have not been so happy to acomplish ANYTHING in a game for SOOOOOO long!

As the title indicates, my concern is regarding combos, I am an elementalist so they are very important to my play.

When with a large group of people (like in the mad kings labrynth) I have noticed my finishers are not triggering in fields I use them in. When I lay down a fire field and use my blast finishers I expect to see a stack of 7 mights on me, just by myself using only labeled abilities (dragon’s tooth, arcane wave), this was not happening, I would put my fire field down, use my blast finishers and have nothing..no stacks of might, nor any other triggered buff. The same happened with water fields/blast finishers…no big aoe heal. This ONLY happened while with a large group of people. There is one other time when I was not with a large group that I noticed my finishers not triggering in the combo fields, and this was with a rangers water field and my blast finishers, it did nothing, no aoe heal…

Not entirely sure what is going on here, but as heavily as Elementalists rely on comboing to accomplish anything worthwhile, it is making it very tough to be an asset to a group when they do not trigger properly.

I don’t know about all the negativity with s/d …if you are running with a couple rangers (my semi-static groups make-up) staff is going to be subpar as they dont have many blast finishers to trigger the massive aoe heal in my water fields. However with scepter/dagger (not including the soon to be nerfed evasive arcana) I have all the blast finishers we need to trigger the heal splashes in the ranger water fields. I don’t really think it is accurate to depict any of the weapons as ‘this strategy is best for this scenerio’ type of thing. As it is highly subjective to what a person is best at playing as well as what they are surrounded by as far as classes and playstyles.

I enjoy Ele because I have a short attention span and Ele has a lot going on to keep my mind occupied. I feel like falling asleep playing any other class, so I get bored of them VERY quickly.
I always felt very powerful leveling as well, but the better people have become at dealing with Ele’s tricks the harder it is to beat them. I am finding more often of late that I need to switch specs and stratagies frequently to keep them on their toes as well.

Don’t ever focus so much on one weapon set and/or spec that you lose touch with the others or you will see yourself fall behind very quickly.

Lets all try to remember that the things in a game are not real, and maybe we do need to remind ourselves of this. The ability to discern reality from fantasy isn’t impossible to maintain. We should all have the ability to realize that the rules that apply in an mmo, the fantasy setting, are not going to be the same rules we live our lives by in the real world.

My 10 year old daughter has no problems realizing the differences here, and although she takes great joy in killing the evil animals in this game she knows that she cannot do the same in the real world.

This is common sense stuff people. Lets keep the worlds seperate pls.

I stopped attempting it because well…I have very limited play time and with the frustration of being so blinded I am imobile because of everyone else in it. If I fail a thing no matter how much I try, I want to know it is because I failed at it, not because I was being trolled by the size of the characters I have no control over. I am not even allowed to say I don’t want to play with characters that size for this. It was decided for me that I must.

Is this going to be a permanent thing? Or is it here just for halloween? If it is limited then that is aggrivating as well, because I cannot decide to just come back when the masses have finished with it.

Let’s see … my female Norn can leap three or four meters with a much heavier hammer poised overhead and swing it down on someone’s head. She can spin with a hammer or great sword at something like three revolutions per second and still move across terrain while doing it. She can swing this heavier hammer underhand and smack a 500 pound creature two meters away. She can battle with Great Sword and Hammer for 15 or 20 minutes at a time and not look a bit fatigued, in fact, brags the entire time while doing it.

But she shouldn’t be able hold a great sword parallel to her body when she runs? Really? At 9 feet tall, 300 pounds of lean, magic laden, muscle? I was having more problems with the fact she was dragging the sword around every where.

No respectable Norn drags a sword.

Very well put! I am glad there is someone to voice it as eliquently as you did. I’m too much of Effy Hates big ugly sword cuz it makes me look like puny human twit RAAWWRRR SMASH type of person.

My point was that it requires an exotic material without having any way of a return on that cost, have you listed one of these items? it doesn’t sell for anything worthwhile. How would it be any more of a restriction than the items needed to upgrade in armorsmithing or tailoring? Some potions in artificing require gems, so it’s not like gems are unique to jewelcrafting only, your argument there only begs for someone to ask why potions are not more needed, or at least as needed as upgrade itmes that require exotic materials to craft.

The entire thing feels as though they ran out of ideas and just said, "well hell, just make it require max level and max tier materials. They need to fix it.

Right, fine. It is perfectly acceptable for lvl 65 rares to require the same materials as level 80 exotic, excuse me for wanting some uniformity between the professions here. If you ask me it is a bit too extreme. There is no reason, ever, that a rare should require the same exotic material that makes an exotic an exotic. …shouldn’t the recipe then be exotic instead of a rare?

What I meant Choam is that I cannot take my lvl 65 Embellished Brilliant Emerald Jewel that requires level 65 to equip to an item, but requires level 375 to craft, as well as requiring an exotic material and break down to at least have a chance for a return on the glob

This is NOT in line with every other profession and needs to be corrected.

I have not had to watch the market to get the best deals on any of the materials it takes to get to 400 on armorsmithing, artificing or tailoring, it was a matter of finding on my own regular 375 materials (which are easy enough to come by btw, nowhere near as rare as globs), not the ORANGE EXOTIC materials

This is complete and utter crap that I am required to use exotic materials to create a LEVEL 65 rare item to level from 375 to 400, not only that but I can’t even break them down for a CHANCE to get the glob back.

Why was this done this way Arenanet, is there ANY logical reason WHATSOEVER? Other than make it a pain to level?

No other profession requires this it is unfair and needs to be reworked.

Thats because people seem to think that once they hit lvl 80 the only place they are allowed to play is in the lvl 80 zones =(

I feel bad for them honestly,. Hopefully Anet gives them more incentive to go out into the world instead of limiting themselves in 1 area to “maximize” their rewards.

I started out being really nervous about this event, thinking the whole thing was about purchasables on the black lion trading company. That was what I got from the forums while at work. I went home and logged in and played and had a blast, I cannot wait to do more tonight when i get home and I cannot wait for the next 3 parts to this event. Good Work Anet! I will more than likely buy that wonderful witches outfit soon =X
