Again, it seems bizarre to have a crafting system where I’m being stopped from making an Ascended item not because I lack Orichalcum or Elder Woods Logs gathered from the level 80 zones like Orr, but because I’m missing mats from the level 15-40 zones. Even though I’m grinding through this weirdness, I can fully understand why none of my friends have decided to go down this crafting hole that Anet has dug.

That’s not even the whole issue, for me. I appreciate the fact that we’re provided motivations to spread our time equally around the map, but while I’m in a map looking for Iron nodes, my supply of Mithril continues to increase due to the salvage I get from the drops in those zones. I don’t even have to bother going out of my way looking for Orichalum nodes since I get enough from salvage, and the profit margins on crafting the 20-slot containers don’t justify trying to acquire Ori deliberately. I’m already debating flooding the market with 18-slot containers just so I can dump my Mirthil with a slightly higher profit margin than selling the ore.

Either way, you should always discourage friends from doing crafting, since we can get better prices if we reduce the supply.

Elder Dragon sleep cycle + world domination

in Lore

Eggman.1405

So do they go to sleep voluntarily? Do they have to be forcibly taken down? Do we know?

Yes, we know. It is stated that the Elder Dragons absorb magic, so when the worldwide level of magic falls sufficiently low, they go dormant. While dormant they slowly leach out the magic they’ve absorbed back into the world, and when that has gone on long enough they wake up again.

So the Sons of Svanir have something of a point when they refer to Jormag as a force of nature to be respected and not just something evil. Those who oppose them are actually disrupting the natural cycle of life on Tyria.

I’m curious as to what people would say to having the ability to lower the quality of the materials they have collected. I have tons of stacks of mithril and elder wood logs handy and it would be nice if I could for example convert the mithril into iron once in a while.

Now, you can argue that we can do that already via the TP by selling the mithil and buying iron, but the reverse is also true and a method was provided to do upgrade conversions in spite of this.

Niamh is described in Dream and Nightmare as a “bold and experienced warrior”.

You have to be careful interpreting statements like that, because a writer who isn’t being careful could just be using `warrior` in the context of `fighter` and not be referring to the class. If the in-game text capitalized the word, though, I would then assume they meant the class specifically.

I guess my big problem is the lore presentation isn’t consistent. There is a lot of material that portray Asurans as valuing knowledge and its pursuit as being more important that concepts like good and evil… I think the bit with the Krewe captured by the Krait is a very good example.

So given this context, I would not expect that basically every time the Inquest are referred to in-game, it’s in the context that they are evil, and all of their actions that we see are basically evil (you would think they would do an experiment once in a while that doesn’t involve hurting somebody, just based on random chance). Essentially they should be portrayed as amoral and not immoral, and I don’t think they are.

I don’t care if you don’t play the market, and neither does anyone in this thread. What people care about is that people don’t play the market and then complain that the TP is dumb and is making them poor. Which is just not true. Their ignorance is making them poor, not the TP.

I’ve reviewed my comments and don’t see any statements that express a personal preference for market use, although you may claim it’s implied. Either way, the OP doesn’t refer to people who don’t play the market but complain about it anyway. It seems quite clear that the OP is merely trying to explain how to maximize profits.

When I look at all three of these in-game images, the only thing that seems off are the eyes. As pointed out, there is enough spread on the variety of African features that these are all fairly credible (to me anyway).

I don’t think that we’ll see anything better until we can officially make Elonian characters. In the meantime, you can argue that these characters aren’t good, but they at least seem passable (again, except for the eyes).

As Ashandar says, while the Arcane Council officially does not endorse or support the Inquest, they also turn a blind eye to a lot of their activities because sometimes their research, as cruel and immoral as it may be, is the only way to achieve breakthroughs in certain fields of science. It’s a case of “I’d like to use the results of your research, but I don’t want to be the one to dirty my hands to get it.”

All well and good, but is this just a reasonable conclusion, or does a character say this? As I mention in my OP, I am curious about the canonical answer, not just player opinions.

Usually in fiction when a scientific organization wants to get cast as the bad guy their actions get cast in a quasi-legitimate light, so you get the drama of dealing with a morally ambiguous scenario. For the Inquest, though, all the in-game dialogue refers to them as being unambiguously evil and all of their actions that we see bend towards the evil side by a wide margin of error. So why on earth (err… `why on Tyria`) haven’t the Asura shut this group down? Seeing as you attack these guys every time you see them, I don’t get why they get to operate unimpeded. Is there any in-game lore that explains why the Asura tolerate these guys?

I know we can make our own opinions, but I’m curious if the official canon says anything. I have similar curiosity as to why the Norn allow the Sons of Svanir to hang out right in Hoelbrak.

The question about incest is an interesting one, I guess it depends on your view point. According to the societal rules we have now, then yes. But life has to start somewhere, and after many generations they would be just like humans in that regard. We don’t have to worry about this question though, since they can’t reproduce.

Since they can’t reproduce, the number of generations wouldn’t matter since every Sylvari would be 1 level of descent from their tree. To avoid the incest issue they would have to romance someone from another tree. The fact that Ronan took the Pale Tree’s seed from a cave full of such seeds shows such trees could exist and Malyck’s existence shows that they apparently do. I’m actually surprised nobody has mentioned Malyck in the LW threads…

Anyways, if there is ever an ambient dialogue written when a Sylvari is discussing this fact, they should steal a line from Data-

Setting your own price: Exactly what the title says. Click match highest seller and lower price 1c below. (tip: if you click the copper field at the top and press down arrow or mouse wheel down, the price will lower by 1c)
Pro: You will sell your item before the 7 already listed and get more money than Option 1.
Con: It takes 3 seconds to change the price.

You cleverly left out a second con. This is also not instant.

Why would you ever click Meet highest buyer after reading this? I’m serious. Please tell me the reason. I want to know.

You already know why. Mainly, some people are better off getting money now.

If you want other reasons:

  • If the buy price is 80c and the sell price is 1s, some people aren’t interested in haggling over a few coppers.
  • Worrying about how to wring out every possible copper of profit from every item they ever encounter is not a source of enjoyment for some.
  • Some people feel undercutting on sell orders by 1c is dirty pool.
  • This is a game that could be unplugged at any time ANet desires. Some people don’t care how much fake money they amass, since it’s fake money that could disappear any time. When the zombie apocalypse strikes, you may start wishing you had a pile of real gold instead of ANet gold.
  • The time that you spent earning more fake money could have been spent earning real money.

Don’t take any of this to imply that I think nobody should enjoy playing the market. I just have difficulty with a mindset that seems to think everybody should be playing the market.

You’re still considering this to be Scarlet’s abode… It is not.

Well, it is, or how else do you explain the hologram that has entries from both before and after her transition into madness?

Also, even if you want the only version living there to be the sweet, lovable version, that doesn’t preclude the existence of a servitor Golem or Steam Creature prototype that runs amok when you get there. It also doesn’t preclude the Inquest from wanting to loot her house. I agree that fighting off an Inquest raid would change the tone of the house exploration from a pleasant browse to having a sense of urgency, but I don’t see that as bad. I can understand if some people would prefer the very last part of this subchapter to be low-key.

Adding gameplay to this scene would be a distraction. But to be fair you haven’t actually presented how you would add gameplay to this scene. Personally I don’t see how you can do it without ruining the mood and point of this scene. And thus it would be a distraction.

I have posited alternatives multiple times. And also to point out, I’m referring to the subchapter as a whole as being lacking, so there is plenty you can do without substantially touching the house scene. Since the house scene as such is the only notable part of the installment, it’s easy to focus on just that part in the discussions. Any of the following would have been an improvement (for me anyway):
- Make the search for the miner interesting. Maybe they have to be saved from the Devourers and/or Bandits/Inquest.
- Add some actual house defenses that have to be overcome. The NPCs discuss the fact that defenses could be a problem, but nothing happens. Make it a real problem.
- Toss the Inquest in there since they are present already. Maybe you have to stop Inquest agents getting to Scarlet’s house before you do.
- After the house scene ends, Taimi touches something she shouldn’t that starts an encounter. After this she gets admonished about being more careful, everybody laughs and we fade to black.

GW2 might label itself an RPG, but that doesn’t really make it such because the MMO part largely kills off the RPG half compared to what you would see in a standard RPG. For me, if you are calling a game an RPG, then my personal choices have to matter, and in GW2, they don’t once you finish the Personal Story. Other definitions of what makes a `true` RPG are also valid of course.

I am personally in the camp that there was far too much telling and not enough showing in season one. However the notion that there cannot be story unless there is some gameplay to distract the player is basically an absurd notion.

I think calling gameplay a `distraction` is a bit unfair. And really, I’ve seen plenty of discussion here of people saying it was fine the way it is. Ok, we all have different views. But I haven’t really seen any arguments that claim that any alternative I’ve proposed would be unacceptable or at least equally enjoyable. It’s almost like talking to Apple die-hards about tweaking anything that the iPhone/Pad or Mac does.

I understand your point about RPG games. If this scene took place as part of the Elder Scrolls series, I probably would not complain. However, even in that context, there’s a difference in that this is part of a time-gated story. If story content in a pure RPG was also time-gated, I would probably also find this annoying. I’m on the fence if you want to classify GW2 as RPG or not. The Personal Story (and by extension, the LW stuff) is RPG, but nothing you do in the Personal Story really matters in the explorable world, so since the Personal Story is non-repeatable, once you’ve done that the RPG portion of the story is dispensed with. I don’t then enter the LW with an RPG mindset since that isn’t my most common experience when playing the game. You can make an argument that I should simply switch gears and enjoy the story… okay, sure. In that case the story should be compelling to a general audience if I get story and nothing else. The Scarlet stuff in part 3 is mainly only going to be compelling to everybody who already knows who she is.

You give me the impression that you are the kind of developer that would end up with some godawful sandwich making mini game during a picnic scene.

This is also unfair since you presume the sandwich game would be awful.

“There is no link between the two that is revealed in this chapter”- Cliff-hanger.
“leaves you hanging with a bit of unresolved mystery”- Oh look another cliff-hanger.

These are story-based points. I have said over and over I have no issues with the story. The issue is that this subchapter is basically 100% story and no gameplay.

Everything that happens could have been relegated to a cutscene that players could then skip if they didn’t want to see it."- So you want something that would be the same but where you don’t do anything at all?

No, my #1 choice is to have something with gameplay in it. If instead, you make everything a literal cutscene instead of a figurative cutscene, at least I’m not scratching my head wondering why my character even needs to be there.

“leave all that stuff as things to find in the exploreable area to reward players who like poking around.”- Like the hologram?

Yes. The hologram was awesome. Or, go back to my #1 choice and give the player something meaningful to do. Even poking around can be fine if my actions are relevant. Maybe the hologram is in a safe on a second floor or a hidden basement and I’m not allowed to open it until I find a code written down someplace else.

Position? Company? Game?

I worked for Stainless Steel Studios, Inc., on Empire Earth and Empires: Dawn of the Modern World. If I say more than that I’ll lose my anonymity.

I agree with the ‘epilogue’ sentiment. Eggman, would you feel different if you framed that last instance as just a very juicy ‘epilogue’?

Thinking about it, I think if they broke into Scarlet’s room first, then went to get Aerin, that would’ve been worked better in terms of structure.

What would connect Ceara to Aerin, or even Master of Peace? Are you saying the zone/Story should’ve started by the town and before the Sanctum crashed?

As it is, there is no real link. You show up in town asking about the crazy Silvari and learn that there are apparently two crazy Silvari, Aerin and Scarlet. There is no link between the two that is revealed in this chapter (unless I missed something, which is possible).

If you moved part 3 to the beginning instead of the end, then you find Morning in town attempting to be healed. She drops clues before dying about a crazy Silvari, but you discover that Scarlet is the only one the people in town have heard of (as the story ends currently). After the bit at Scarlet’s house the crew realizes that they are at a dead end for now and leave town to look for clues, segueing into the encounters at the wrecked airship. Then you get the boss fight at the end and the Master of Peace leaves you hanging with a bit of unresolved mystery. Again, the story content as such is fine. Just improve the delivery a little bit.

I get the concept of a `let’s just breathe out slowly` epilogue, but there isn’t enough for the player to do to justify it as its own stand-alone subchapter. Everything that happens could have been relegated to a cutscene that players could then skip if they didn’t want to see it. Or, leave all that stuff as things to find in the exploreable area to reward players who like poking around.

Good to know I’m not 100% crazy (maybe 99%).

I worked for a game developer from 2000 – 2003; back then how to best integrate story and gameplay was our key concern. This intro gets a big F from me on that score. Most people seem to be thrilled enough with the story content that they can overlook the presentation, I understand that view, but doing better is really not that hard.

Eggman.1405

Book or game is irrelevant. Cliffhangers are endings used as plot devices to build up anticipation/drama. Very little story content was contained in this episode to warrant the usage of a cliffhanger unlike the end of Season 1. The section in the rented room was more than enough and especially since it’s only the first episode. You usually do not see cliffhangers until things really get going.

I think the story medium is quite relevant. If it was truly irrelevant then people would be happy enough to have all the lore spouted out in cutscenes and all the fights could be saved for the explorable area.

Now if you want to say the 1st chapter of a story doesn’t need a cliffhanger, I can understand that argument, although I find it unwise in this situation. I wasn’t here for LWS1 so information on Scarlet doesn’t give me goosebumps. If given my druthers I would provide a stronger intro before moving into the slow build-up for the end of the season. This opening doesn’t do that much to hook people who are coming into the game cold.

You might also notice that my proposed revision to the ending doesn’t even put it into the category that I would normally label a `cliffhanger`. A cliffhanger implies something is left unknown until the next chapter. I’m just saying people playing a game should have more to do than simply sit in a room and listen to story as the ending to an introduction. What should and should not be revealed and what should and should not be resolved is an entirely different issue.

Hmm but what big ending do you want? It’s not ended, it’s a section of a story. Scarlet’s old house was an interesting end. Especially if you stuck around with Taimi. I loved the ending, it left me wanting more.

Not ever event in life ends with a bang, and how it was in the personal story was just that. It didn’t feel realistic at all. This the first realistic story arc I’ve felt I’ve experienced in GW2.

My expectations are quite low. Since I’m playing a game, I do expect the player to be required to be a participant and not an observer. You don’t even have to fight. Maybe all of Scarlet’s really interesting stuff is hidden someplace that requires solving a puzzle to get access to.

Shrug

I’ve tried to make it clear that I have different expectations between books and games. They are different media. Movie serials are a close parallel and they have little trouble having some action in each chapter while the heroes slowly work towards resolving the Big Problem.

Would you prefer a “To Be Continued…” to pop up on the screen? It’s a chapter and there really does not need to be an ending. In books, do you see endings at the end of a chapter? The “ending”, if any, would be the revelations of what occurred when they searched that room and the more questions in brought setting the tone for the next living story.

As I mentioned before I have different expectations when playing a game vs. reading a book. And we have to be clear what we mean when we say `ending`. Again I am NOT discussing story content. I am only discussing user experience. Nothing as regards to the overall story needs to be resolved or otherwise altered.

We were given this:
- You show up at the house. There is a discussion that there could be a threat when trying to enter the house. But, there is no threat.
- You enter the house. People talk. The conversation they have is IRRELEVANT (as regards to my point), they could discuss Dolyak Stew recipes for all I care.
- The chapter ends. You poke around a little.

An alternative would be this:
- You show up at the house. There is a discussion that there could be a threat when trying to enter the house. The threat is real. As soon as you touch the door, Golems or what have you pop out and there is a fight or some other actual challenge that requires more from the player than `pew pew` on a door.
- You enter the house. People talk. The conversation they have is still IRRELEVANT.
- You think the chapter ends. The crew leaves (or doesn’t) and you’re there with Taimi. As she pokes around excitedly you have a `TAIMI STOP DON’T TOUCH THAT` moment and something else happens… more Golems or Steam Creatures or what have you pop up or some boss and you fight.
- Now the chapter ends and you poke around after warning Taimi to be careful.

Isn’t the second version somewhat better than the first? If no I’ll keep quiet.

So when you read a book, you come to your conclusion after the first few pages? If you took the time to dive into the story, you’ll have found many clues and lore hidden within. If story is important to you, it can be really boring if you skip or miss all the good parts.

You seem to be confusing complaints about content vs. complaints about delivery method. I have zero issues with the actual content. The fight vs. the saboteur could have been the real end (and potentially more rewarding if we randomly dropped some things if you repeat that fight) and most of the story from part 3 left to discover as ambient conversations or things you find poking around Dry Top.

Sorry if this is a repeat, I’ve checked through several pages and haven’t seen similar threads on this exact topic…

I’m very dumbfounded at how they chose to end the first thrilling chapter of LWS2. Instead of some dramatic event that leaves you excited for the upcoming months and breathless for more, you sit in a room. And listen to people talk.

A lot.

Then you click on some stuff and listen to more talking.

A lot.

Then there is some more talking. And you get to poke around a room when everybody leaves. If the end-of-story graphics didn’t pop up in your face you’d have no idea that you’ve been dismissed.

Now I know that we’re not in the age where you can catch a nice Republic serial at the movies anymore, but the cliffhanger trope still works well. I can’t believe the Anet story editor thought that having people sit in a room was a good climax for an introductory chapter. Even the tiny bit of drama that it set up has no payoff… there is all this talk at the start about what kind of defenses might be set up to enter the room, so in theory you could have had some sort of battle to go out on, but after all the hand-wringing from the NPCs you just `pew pew` down a door and that’s it. If there was really no content left for part 3, they could have just ended things after the boss battle in part 2 and saved the part 3 stuff for the opener next month.

Maybe this would work on paper since if I was reading a book I could just continue on to the next chapter. If I have to wait a month for the next piece of story, I wouldn’t recommend putting people to sleep first.

I despise the jumping in GW2… mostly because you can easily die when you fail, partly for all the longer jump sequences that force you to start over from jump #1 if you miss jump #100. However, I wouldn’t complain about the Bazaar because if I don’t jump there, I’m just missing access to stuff I can probably get elsewhere. If I can’t even traverse a map zone without having to literally jump through hoops, that’s a different issue.

Every so often when I’m selling off junk items I’ll see buy orders that go into the hundreds for items which would appear to have no value (in particular, many armors that have the Cabalist label). So for example the Berserker’s Cabalist Boots of Infiltration has a demand of 286 at a buy price of 3s89c (as of the time of this writing). I’m sure if I went and looked at the TP, this demand would mostly be split between a small handful of people. I was trying to get a character to level 80 without any deaths, and despite surviving dozens of Boss Blitz battles (with doing actual fighting, not just tagging and hiding in the middle), I died simply walking out of town to gather some mats to finish a daily.

I just don’t understand why a character should ever be killed from falling, unless you fall into a spot you can’t walk out of. Even more aggravating when you are simply walking downhill and not falling per se. Just leave the character downed and not dead.

Not just you, I’ve also had problems. Leveling Up and Out of Range among others. I’ve tried asking in map chat a few times if people have any tips on getting bugged hints to complete and have been ignored every time. Which is actually odd, since you’d usually expect at least a few wiseacre `read the forums` answers.

Vent: Crafting is bland.

I’ve had a co-worker mention this same sort of thing, that they don’t like the crafting. I’m still trying to really understand what people’s expectations are that they don’t like it in GW2.

You collect materials and make things. Some things you can sell to other players and make some money. You can make lots of different things, most of which you could care less about. The act of crafting itself is not interesting- you click a button and wait for a progress bar to fill up.

The above description pretty much fits every MMO I’ve ever played, so why is the GW2 version the `bad` one?

That being said, I have seen cool things in other MMOs, but I don’t count their absence as a slight on GW2. I liked how in Ultima Online it marked items with `Crafted by [Your Name Here]` when you were at max level for the craft. You could also craft gobs more stuff there, but that game included player housing, so you had a need for more varieties of stuff. In YAHOO Puzzle Pirates, to craft items, you actually have to play a mini-game with a vague association with whatever it is you are trying to make. If you want to produce an elite item, you need to demonstrate an elite performance in the mini-game. I liked this a lot since it makes the actual act of crafting fun, but I haven’t seen this feature in any other MMO, so again, I don’t disparage GW2 for not doing it.

GW2 Spidy Effect

Hi-

I wanted to share some thoughts on GW2 Spidy and see if anyone else has had similar experiences. And I want to say up front that I think it’s an awesome tool, so I’m not looking to solicit comments along the lines of `you should be more careful` or `don’t use it if you have a problem`, I’m already aware of that.

Basically the tool is a bit harder to use as a profit-making aid that is implied by commentary I’ve seen in these forums. My main issue with it is that the projected profits are based on the sellers’ asking prices and not what people are actually paying. This might be okay if your use of the market focuses on how much you might be able to make if you can wait it out. For an average user who is more likely to be concerned with what profit they can make today because they need money, this is not helpful.

Aside from things being unclear as regards to what profit you can actually make, I think the use of this tool might even be skewing the market. As an example, look at the data posted on the site for the prices of the Rampager’s Intricate Linen Insignia. For some reason, these started to be listed at a price near 6g even though nobody was buying them for more than around 50s. During that week, I had been browsing the site trying to find if there were any items I could sell for a profit provided I was buying all the required materials from the TP. Thanks to the 6g price, this item qualified. I suspect that in addition to myself, other people noticed this and we all flooded the market with offers for these insignia. As the week went on and nobody was actually paying these prices, we’ve now been undercutting ourselves trying to get these off the shelf, but you can see that buyers’ prices still haven’t gone up past 50s.

So it looks like misinterpreted profits from the site can unintentionally flood the market with items that will never sell since the prices are based on wishful thinking from the sellers. Ideally you could see the potential profits based on both the dreams of the sellers are the realities of what people are actually paying. I’ve tried to email the site owner to discuss this but haven’t received any reply. If I had more money I’d love to try an experiment where I post some items at randomly inflated prices to see how many others then follow suit.

What are some of your experiences with this?

Oh, that’s good news regarding the reset. Right now the #1 cause of death for my characters is falling damage, and I’m getting sick of starting over from L1 every time.

Signet of Renewal is supposed to dump all your conditions onto your pet when used. What then happens when you use the trait that causes you and your pet to equally be affected by signets?

Stuck on Skrittsburg torches

Hello-

In the Skrittsburg tunnels of Brisban Wildland you are supposed to help the grub farmers by lighting torches. After lighting a torch, I am unable to move at all unless I start a combat activity. Moving, jumping, and dodging just leaves my character rooted to the spot. During the torch-lighting process, you character is also not able to move away, so it looks like this lock is not always being released correctly.

Problem with 1st Sylvari P.Story Quest

Eggman.1405

Hello-

I just ran into trouble trying to finish the very first quest in the Sylvari personal story where you hunt the White Stag. In the opening of the quest, to track the Stag to a cave but find instead another Sylvari who is being attacked by Risen.

At the end of the mission, you bring the Sylvari to the mouth of the cave and are supposed to talk to him, but I was unable to do so. He was just standing there and the `F` key never went active on the screen to give talk as an option. This left me unable to complete the quest. I had to leave the instance and restart the mission, after which everything was fine.

Prob. with Dead vs. Downed and Survivor title

Eggman.1405

Hello-

I was pursuing the `Lifetime Survivor` Title and had reached around level 20 or so. I got into a battle with an Oakheart that I couldn’t win, but that I also couldn’t get away from, because it would keep spamming `Binding Roots` on me every time I was able to move (an issue of its own, IMHO, but off topic).

In desperation I attempted to log out while still trapped in the roots. After waiting a few minutes I logged back in, and was at the `You have been defeated` state with the request to pick a waypoint to spawn at. After doing this I went to check the `/deaths` report which reported `you have died 0 times`.

After this I then proceeded to reach level 40 without incident, but never received credit for the 200k experience Survivor award. So there is some kind of problem here, but I’ll let ANet decide what it is exactly. Either the achievement text needs to be updated to reflect `without dying or being defeated`, or my earlier actions should have logged a death but didn’t.

This is happening to me as well, along with other errors in the text- nonalphabetic characters are being displayed wrongly, so maybe the wrong character codes are being used.

I’m finding it very upsetting that you DIE in PvE from falling damage. At best you should just be downed. Some of us aren’t as handy with the jumping as others and don’t appreciate being punished for it in this manner.
