Since you’ve already gotten some good suggestions on how to test the connection, I’ll just go ahead and give you my two cents worth of experience

I happen to play from Libya, North Africa. The quality of the internet, equipment, lines etc here is plain bad. I play on an NA server because of my guild. I have a 60KB/s connection. My ping fluctuates between 220 and 350, so I do have some lag. I do notice it, but personally, I find that this on its own doesn’t hamper my playing at all.

I realize I’m at bit of a disadvantage in sPvP. For me that’s fine, I’m not trying to be a top competitor and still have fun in the matches I end up in. Meaning, I don’t find it frustrating to play. I have no issues playing WvW either, though I imagine here too I’m at a slight disadvantage in small skirmishes.

My own issues with lag spikes or disconnects come from others using my connection to watch YouTube or from the fact that our equipment is just old and not very stable. But the connection itself is good enough to play the game on. I’d imagine your situation can only be better than mine. One of my guildies is in the UK and generally has no problems whatsoever from what I know.

It’s possible or even likely an EU server might give you a better connection, but I consider it a small trade if your NA server gives you a guild/community you enjoy being with.

For those who are really bothered by the music, I suggest you quickly toss together a Custom Soundtrack. Get a few songs or tracks you like or use the original menu music if you have the soundtrack, make a playlist called MainMenu, and put it in your Documents\GuildWars2\Music folder.

Only takes a few minutes =)

Guild bounties - bounty hunt time

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

Yesterday we failed 5 Bounty events, four of which because of Sotzz coming up!

Heh, you’re not the only ones. We did three bounties last night, got Sotzz three times and failed every time. We scouted Gendarran Fields with anywhere between 10 and 20 people for 45 minutes and could not find him. Bad luck I suppose =)

We definitely want it to remain challenging, but I also agree that it’s an issue that any person can break the barrel and reset him, as opposed to the other Bounty Hunt targets who can only be activated by guild members without additional mechanic. I think that perhaps even this small change might make him a lot easier to find.

62500 Baubles ...

in Suggestions

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

ArenaNet have always held the position that you shouldn’t need to grind to play the game (that’s supposed to be the “fun stuff”). Meaning that the game should be fun from the start. However, they’ve always had a tradition of (some pretty serious) grinding for completely optional stuff such as skins, titles, etc.

As mentioned, the skins are on the trading post, I wouldn’t be surprised if the price drops as the month progresses. There’s also a ton of chests in all the zones where you can get baubles pretty easily =) I don’t personally like to see skins in Black Lion Chests either though, I’ll pass on those.

Perfectionists' Cult [NICE] - Sanctum of Rall

in Guilds

Eivene.9127

Greetings from the NICE Guild!

Who we are
Perfectionists’ Cult [NICE] is a 6+ year old guild based on the values of Respect, Honor, Integrity, Loyalty, Friendship and Teamwork. We are based on Sanctum of Rall and currently we have around 80 members in the guild. Most of us are in the US, but we have an increasing number of players from Europe and Asia/Australia, we’d love to have more guild members of all time-zones. NICE is the leader of an alliance that is currently staying strong through our website and we like to get involved in community events outside our guild as well.

What we offer
Most importantly, we offer a family friendly, fun and supportive environment. We’re always willing to lend a hand when we can. We schedule regular guild and alliance events including dungeons, jumping puzzles, clearing zones, Random Acts of NICEness and so on.
We focus mainly on PvE, but we like to get into WvW as well. We have members ranging from casual to more hardcore players, but most of us have families and jobs and we understand that real life always comes first.
We have a website, http://perfectcult.guildlaunch.com and a TS3 server for anyone who’d like to join.

What we are not

  • We are not a hardcore guild. We approach most areas of the game in a casual manner and we have members of all skill and activity levels.
  • We are not a 24/7 active chat-guild. We like to talk and share, we are always happy to answer questions and can be found on TS every evening, but we do have quiet moments where everyone’s simply focusing on the game.

What we expect from our members

  • Be respectful at all times so we can keep a fun, friendly and drama-free environment. Breaking the rules results in a warning first, and removal from the guild if it happens again. Respect is key to a strong guild. If someone is disrespectful to you, please report it to an officer or the leader.
  • No swearing or harsh language in chat, keep it clean! (this includes acronyms), this goes for party and map chat too. We are all responsible for the guild’s image.
  • Log into the game at least once a month, if you’re going to be absent for longer, please let us know.
  • Log into the website regularly, but at least once a month. Communication is important for the guild.

We feel these guidelines should be easy to follow.

If you ever want to leave the guild, please let us know why. It helps us grow as a guild. We would prefer you tell us what you are looking for before you even think about leaving. Maybe we can accommodate your wishes!

To join the guild, please go to our website and apply to the guild at http://perfectcult.guildlaunch.com

If you want to know more, feel free to pm me here or in game Eivene.9127 or get in touch with our leader, Little Wise Owl. We will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

Looking forward to meeting you!

Are Servers Saturated w/Guilds?

in Guilds

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

I understand the concerns about the “value” of guilds. Certain functions we know are coming (guild halls, for example), but I don’t know if they plan on changing the cost and other things.

While I can’t really speak from the perspective of a small/new guild, I can say that since we moved to GW2, we have found more members by playing and speaking with people than we have by “static” recruiting in cities, zones and websites. And the ones we recruit through playing tend to stick more than those who responded to a recruitment message.

Aside from the people who’ve brought in personal friends, most of our new members joined us after one of ours helped them out in a zone with a vista, a tough skill challenge, that last POI they can’t get, or answered questions they had. Those moments provide a great opportunity to chat and get to know someone, and a chance for you to show the kind of guild you are.

Either way, I wish you and all other guilds out there all the best and good luck.

Grinding is Fun with anti farming mechanics?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Eivene.9127

Yes, I understand and no, I don’t think that’s good. Sorry that I didn’t make that clear in the previous post. I wasn’t arguing that it works fine as it is. It has issues. I just think that with tweaking and fixing (in order to prevent exactly the scenario you mentioned), there shouldn’t be much of a problem. They could stretch the time limit, the parameters, etc. in order to make it work as intended.

Grinding is Fun with anti farming mechanics?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

I don’t think the system is necessarily bad. All it does is prevent you from running the exact same content over and over again. Meaning that if you move from event to event, mob to another mob, zone to zone you really shouldn’t run into the DR wall at all.

It’s an incentive to keep moving through the game. Now, it’d be a problem if an item can only be found on one mob in one zone, but the main issue lies in the fact that pre-80 zones don’t have the same rate of high level drops and rewards as the 80 zones do, so there is less of an incentive to move around. If they tweak that, there shouldn’t be any problems.

Level Scaling is not for "rewards"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

Likewise I revisit low level areas just for the fun, for going through them with friends, etc. It’s near impossible for me to get bored by that. However, in order for it to appeal to more players I do see room for improvement. Some people will have fun no matter what, some people just really like shinies. The ideal is for the game to appeal to both. (and some people are never satisfied no matter what :P, that happens too)

I wouldn’t mind if downscaling affected your equipment too. I’d even like the idea of a slider (much like The World Ends With You), where you could downscale yourself some more to make things extra challenging.

As for rewards, I’d like to see them make level-appropriate drops a little more likely than they are now, so that people really feel rewarded for going into these areas again.

so the answer is locking all debate down about night capping

in WvW

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

You forget they themselves also stated it was meant to be 24/7… yes, they did think about this. Just like they stated it was never going to be balanced, etc.

The region choice (and language choice), still gives you other advantages. It does give you the opportunity to select a server where you know you’ll meet people in your timezone who share the same peak hours as you do, etc. Remove this entirely and you also miss a chunk of coordination that is very useful to many people/guilds.

I understand the guild influence/upgrades argument. ArenaNet have already stated to be working on mitigating this.

Granted, EVE is one server, the point was about reaching out to people/guilds/corporations that are in different time zones, which is what you need to do to have 24 hour coverage.

Eivene.9127

It’s because they’ve already answered the question numerous times and are probably sick of answering the same question over and over again.

Wv3 is meant to be 24 hours, they will not do anything to prevent this. Learn to search…

actually thats what you say

ANet’s stance on this couldnt possibly be clearer.
they made the servers region based.

I happen to be in GMT+2 on an NA server. So I ask: What, exactly, is preventing you from joining a server in another region? Absolutely nothing. Yes, it makes a fraction more sense to route these through their German data centres. (with the exception of the Spanish server. There are clearly more Spanish speakers in the whole of South America than there are in Spain.) And then only a few of the EU servers are language-specific.

It’s more that it’s a tradition to have a language-specific server available for speakers of these very common languages, which the game conveniently is also translated in. Much like GW1 had Japanese, Traditional Chinese etc districts, this didn’t stop any of us players using these districts for festivals or farming hoping to get better stuff.

ArenaNet fully intends you to be able to play on any server you wish, that’s why there’s no restriction and guesting will be implemented soon for any server, regardless of region. So you can play with your friends around the world.

Like others have said, EVE players did this. They got organized and they pulled it off. I see no reason for us not to be able to do the same.

What drives you to login?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Eivene.9127

Eivene.9127

“What drives you to login?”

The fun of playing the game.
I am 80 since a while but there’s still so much to do, it’ll take months. And then there’s the PvP, which does never get old.

This! Except I haven’t really tried PvP yet. I’m having a ton of fun just playing the game. I also login for the company of my guild.

  • My main’s been at level 80 for a few weeks and I still have a ton of things in mind that I want to do. I’m at 72% world exploration so I’m still going through zones. I have around 8 or 9 zones left plus the WvW areas.
  • I’m enjoying WvW. Even though I hit 400 in cooking I want to gather more food and discover more recipes. I’m starting on the other crafting disciplines
  • I still have a lot of dungeons to do, and even when I’ve done them I don’t get tired of repeating them with friends (I know the rewards are broken, it doesn’t bother me personally since I’m just there to enjoy the dungeon itself. It’ll get fixed).
  • I enjoy going through different dynamic event chains, joining friends in whatever area they’re playing. I’ll happily revisit zones I’ve already been in because I enjoy their atmosphere.
  • I haven’t gotten to all of the jumping puzzles yet, still lots to do there
  • I have different builds I want to try out, and they require different armor sets I still need to acquire. For long term goals I’m aiming for a few dungeon sets whose looks I really like. Legendaries in the distant future, perhaps :P

That’s for my Elementalist. I also have an Engineer and I have so many things I want to try out with this class, so that’s my next character I’m planning to take to 80 to unlock all the traits. I also have a Mesmer, Thief, and Guardian I’m itching to play with.

I don’t have as much time now as I did on launch, so everything’s going at a slower pace.

Guild Wars 2: A Hardcore Gamer's Prospective (Long Read)

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

“I enjoy playing this game very much. When everything is fixed and the flaws are ironed out the game would be even more addicting than it is now. I just hope it is sometime soon before my enjoyment/patience factor runs out.” (because the quote buttons are hiding)

I’m rather curious how this thread turned into a “lack of endgame/content” discussion, because it seems to me that the majority of things holding the OP back are bugs and flaws, not lack of stuff. Hence the quote. If things were fixed it seems to me that Sphynx himself said he would still be enjoying this game.

I could be mistaken, of course, so feel free to correct me. The content discussion is still valid from many perspectives, either way.

I don’t think they need to change their philosophy. I just think there needs to be more tweaking to implement it in a better way. “The whole game is end-game” is a sound strategy, but it needs adjustments. Sharper downscaling so that lower level content is more challenging than it is now, and better rewards in these areas, more tactics and strategy, etc, so that the rest of the game remains a viable alternative to Orr at level 80. That would be my personal preference, anyway.

@robot: lol, and yet my guild of 200+ people disagree with you, and are loving every minute of it on the whole.

yea how many of those 200 have not rerolled at all and play just their main?

Obvious fanboy is obvious. I’m sure you speak 100% for over 200 people. Such bs. 200+ people that “love every minute” ? lol move on

Not that it matters. I know large guilds that have left and gone back to other MMO’s, or just shelved the game temporarily. So whats your point? There are different opinions but don’t act like the problems aren’t real.

Why should this be mutually exclusive? I am loving every single minute I spend in this game (yes I reached level 80 weeks ago and I’m still playing mostly on my main) and yet I’m well aware that there are issues. The issues simply don’t detract from my enjoyment at all because I just enjoy playing and I’ll continue to give constructive criticism on what can be improved.

Yes, I see the end-game problem that a portion of the players is experiencing. We don’t need to be fanboys to enjoy a game that’s having issues at launch.

You’re definitely not the only one experiencing this problem. Some guilds are experiencing bugs like not being able to buy upgrades, edit the ranks, etc. There’s a thread about all guild issues in the bugs forum, I suggest you post all the details there.

Skyrim-Styled Home Instance?

I didn’t manage to stick with Skyrim so I’m not entirely sure how that worked. There are plans for dedicated player housing in the home instance, though no ETA on it, as far as I know. It’s definitely a great idea and something I look forward to.

How does influence work in events with multiple members?

in Players Helping Players

“2 Influence for individual guild members completing an event or part of a personal storyline. (The per-player influence gained increases substantially with each new participating guild member.)”

So it is supposed to scale up, but I don’t think anyone’s gotten around to actually calculating by how much. It does seem strange that it would stay at 20 with more than 2 members. I’ve seen someone else on the (edit) support forums experience the same thing with their guild. It does sound like it’s not working entirely as it should.

Combat, Dynamic Events... what's the point if they're easy mode?

A very nice read, thank you! I completely agree with you that I’d love to see more strategy concerning mobs, bosses and these really big events. This starts in very small details in mob mechanics, but definitely work into the big things you mention.

I also really like your suggestion of having interlinked world events in one map, where you will have to split the player base to accomplish anything and the idea of some events scaling in difficulty after successive player wins. I would welcome this challenge

Definitely would like for the dragon fights to be much longer, more strategic, and more involving.

Great suggestions, thanks!

Have to agree with Komuflage that a flood of +1s isn’t necessarily the best way. Good suggestions will get noticed by ArenaNet, I wouldn’t worry about that.
