SAB difficulty in future

You know, I’ve been trying to remain very positive and kind hearted despite all the complaints and whining about SAB. They gave you an easy mode, a normal mode, and a stupid mode. Oh, and since there was so much crying, they also gave you an INFINITE continue coin. If you can’t hack it on normal or stupid, play it on easy. I know, achievements, blahblah, but oh well. It’s an achievement in a video game. Big deal. 90% of the people that post on this forum wouldn’t have made it through a whole video game when the NES, SNES, or Atari were popular. There was no YouTube back then to figure out the secret spots or little tricks to make it easier. There were no forums to ask for help. There was no community to give advice. You just suffered through it. Well, SAB is a tribute to those kinds of games. Suffer through it. You don’t have to play if you don’t like it. Perhaps the haters should develop and code the next 2 worlds for them so they don’t have to, then they can be the ones that get insulted and under appreciated. It.is.a.video.game. Chill out, and have FUN with it instead of worrying about being so super pro all the time.

I have no doubt that based on the input the community has given them about their opinions of World 2, they will take that into consideration when building Worlds 3 and 4. If not, well, that sucks. We aren’t developers for ArenaNet for a reason. We have no right to talk bad about someone else’s work when most of us wouldn’t even know the first thing about how to develop something like that. Constructive criticism is fine, but for some reason, that’s asking far too much.

Suggestions for increasing SAB activity

Hey guys, just wanted to say that I’m a big fan of SAB currently. Keep up to great work creating these awesome experiences!

However, I have noticed a sharp decline in the amount of players going into SAB. I may get some from flak for saying this, however I believe there is a relatively simple way to fix this: increase the rewards. Before anyone throws a brick at me, hear me out please. Back in April, it felt that you were actually getting rewarded for playing SAB. Whether trying to acquire unique skins or trying to get some Obsidian Shards for a Legendary, it never felt like you were wasting time because in the end, you were playing for something you wanted and had a tangible goal to work towards. Now, the rewards in the second release seem kinda…ok, they appear to be terrible in comparison. You can buy some new skins, sure. But what else is there if you don’t like them or already have the ones you want? A mini? Continue coins for TM runners? There doesn’t appear to be any reason to play this content except if you like a specific skin, while in the April release there were reasons for a multitude of people to play the box over and over again.

As an example, you (Anet) know a lot of players are trying to create Ascended weapons currently, and a lot of them are still going after Legendaries as well. You also noted that the market, due to these Ascended changes, may become unstable for a bit as more items are needed then there are supply. Why not fix two problems with one board? Add some T6/possibly T7 mats and other important crafting items to the reward table. All of a sudden, players have an option. Do they want to farm Orr/jumping puzzles/dungeons where the drops are random or do they want to play in an area where they can feel like they are making REAL progress towards a goal they have. Also, say you don’t want to have all these T6 materials available at once because you are afraid of what might happen to the economy? Why not have only 2 or 3 available on a given day? Say Day 1 you have Bones, Bloods, and Dusts as the mats. Day 2, Bones are still available, however now there are Totems and Ectos in the rewards table instead. Some may argue outright buying Ectos shouldn’t exist, so you could add item drop boxes like in Crown Pavillion so people could open random rares/exotics and convert them into Ectos instead, or possibly even open that precursor they have been hoping for (I’m not saying have a “random precursor box” prize, just a random box like opening a chest with a chance at one). Also, you could do limited time rewards to draw people in and help bring down the prices of some materials in one fell swoop. Say that Moto has a 1 hour “fire sale” special where he is selling Charged Lodestones, 3 for 1 like O. Shards. All of a sudden, you have an influx of players who either want to make gold off the Lodestones or need them for crafting purposes. The 1 hour time limit will allow more to enter the economy, but not at an extreme rate. People who need them will be able to acquire them easier for a short time, and then when SAB leaves, the market will return to normal.

Again, the above is just a suggestion, however I feel it would be a great idea with the recent additions to the game. If anybody else has suggestions, or criticisms of my idea, please feel free to add! I’d love to see some ideas that could get large amounts of people back into SAB!

I think that’s a wonderful idea. I have no idea about end-game content (my highest is only 40…) so I don’t know what it takes to craft them or even acquire them, but it sounds like your suggestion would give people a reason to play in the SAB. World 1 is still there, so if World 2 isn’t your fancy, just farm World 1. Boring and old news I know. There’s also Infantile Mode. You don’t get as many rewards for completing zones, but at least it’s easier and you do still get some baubles. +1 for your suggestion.

World 1, Zone 2 – The bouncy mushrooms prove to be a far greater challenge than she can conquer alone. This time, however, you can actually see her playing… and it’s not a vertical video. :P

Adorable! Gotta share this with the team. Posted the vid on my facebook.

Just goes to show how much fun SAB can give families! Maybe it’s time for Moto to start working on a version for the household?

That’s a super idea! Maybe Moto and Princess Miya can start a family once she’s saved. Since, you know, they’re different people and all. :P Thank you for reading!

It’s always great to read such light-hearted posts, especially when it pertains to the innocence of growth and learning. I agree that games foster thinking and analysis, all the while exercising and improving hand-eye coordination.

Like the above posters have pointed out though, it is also vital to teach mannerisms and proper decorum to your children, especially when they’re at a younger age. You do look like you’ll do a great job though! Keep playing together, growing together and having fun together. That’s what being a parent to a child is all about after all. Enjoy the journey Euphemia!

Thank you for reading and taking the time to reply, ToPoc. If she is going to grow up playing online games often, I can’t agree with you more about teaching mannerisms, etc, especially when she is able to read. Thank you, Bree and I appreciate your response.

I plan on doing the same thing with my nephew when he gets older.

I’ll probably hook up my old NES though and start him on Battletoads.

Yeah, he’ll love me…

LOL, Battletoads?! That’s awesome. Have fun with that! >.> Thank you for reading!

This three year old is better at jumping puzzles than many people i’ve encountered in-game.

High-five for teaching our kids jumping skillz!

She’s a lot better at it than I am.

This happened in reverse at my house. My oldest son was very patient teaching ME how to get through SAB the first time.

Thank you for reading and watching! She helped her grandma play a little bit the other day. It was really interesting to watch Aubree on my PC and her grandma on Bree’s dad’s. Aubree kept saying, “Come on mamaw! Watch me! Jump up the rainbow!” so she’d do the jump and her grandma would be sitting there trying to keyboard turn to get lined up to jump, then Aubree would turn around and go back to where her grandma’s character was and show her how to do the jump again.

It’s awesome your son is patient enough to help you get through it. When I was younger, there is no way I would have helped my mother play a video game. lol. Thank you for response.

I put my thumb on both key C (dodge) and Space so that the joint rests on the Space bar and the tip of my thumb lightly on the dodge key. When jumping, I time it like a normal jump with W as forward. The extra pressure on C allows a perfect dodge timing just right when the character is in mid air. Hope it helps.

Thank you, Iris! That really helps!

Akamon, congratulations on your recent addition. You just have to abandon all desires to “get that achievement” or do a level in a “timely manner” when playing with the kiddos. At least, that’s what I have to do. We explore and practice jumps, and she falls a lot and has to start over from the beginning (i.e., Storm Top.) All you can do is laugh and say, oh well, it’s just a game. Sometimes I get angry but she doesn’t hesitate to give me a /facepalm when I’m losing my cool. It’s a great reality check to be facepalmed by a toddler. It sounds like you’ll be a wonderful role model for him. I salute you for sticking around to be with your family, there are so many people (men and women alike) that walk away from their responsibilities as a parent. Thank you for taking the time to read and reply.

Thanks everyone. I was hitting W as well, yes, but I tried it without also thinking that maybe that’s why it wasn’t working. I will practice some more and will also use the middle mouse button suggestion. I was hitting them in a sequence and not simultaneously, so I’ll try that too. I appreciate all of the suggestions, you were all very helpful. Last time I checked, my latency was ~120 MS. I have a Razer Lycosa keyboard if that means anything positive or negative in dodge jumping. I also read the move is not a necessity, but it seems like it would be helpful in some areas. Thanks again.

It’s probably just me and I apologize if there’s a topic about this already, but every time I try to dodge jump I get nothing… I spent nearly half an hour jumping off really high trees attempting the dodge jump and it’s never worked… Spacebar > V is how you do it, right? Maybe I’m doing something wrong? Anyone else have issues with dodge jumping? Is it only possible in certain levels?

This is so awesome! I’m using this as encouragement for my friends who claim they can’t play SAB.

LOL, that’s awesome. I hope your friends have a renewed sense of confidence in playing SAB.

I’m sure you’ll be fine. Just be there to help guide her and let her know that it’s important not to let yourself get dragged down to their level. That it’s important, and even admirable, to remain a good and polite person online. Not too much different from guiding her through SAB, really. Just navigating a different set of obstacles.

Finally got around to watching that video too. Your daughter is super cute. XD I’d be a very proud parent if my kid could do SAB at age 3 too. Tribulation Mode might be too much for her though; that portion in W1Z1 with lots of jumping rocks might give her nightmares.

Thank you so much for that! I really appreciate it. I will try my hardest to make sure she remains a civil person on the interwebz. There’s really no need to be a jerk, it takes a lot more effort than just being nice, imo. She was determined to play Trib tonight. Every time the rocks would jump she’d jump and then start giggling, “That scared me mommy!”

Have to agree 100% especially tribulation mode.

Trib mode teaches you to not go head onto the path and try a different approach, if you’re near a checkpoint dont just jump right to it their could be a trap, If it looks too easy it probably is. Honestly best mode ever imo, hate the people who want it easier.

I won’t play Trib mode of my own accord. It’s too hard. I won’t complain about it either, the players that like it and are good at it, I totally support them. I am not good enough to play it, and I don’t chase achievements or anything, I only play for the fun of it – I have yet to beat world 2 on normal mode, so I’ll be working on that until SAB leaves probably. Thank you for reading!

SAB is dying...

I really enjoyed Josh’s posts. If you do read this, Josh Foreman, do not feel bad about SAB. As you said, you have acclimated to the difficulty some of us find in the Box. Some of us are not as talented or skilled. I, personally, think World 2 is a piece of cake on Infantile mode, although Assassins are a pain in the butt, but I am a complete wreck when it comes to playing on normal.. and forget a whole lot of Tribulation. I love SAB, I will always be a fan and supporter of it. I don’t chase achievements, I like the rewards but I don’t really care about them. I play for the nostalgia and the fun of it, so maybe that’s why I don’t get so upset when I die five million times trying to beat a level. On the same route Zax was going, we all respect your hard work and dedication to the SAB, Josh. When SAB first aired my daughter (3 years old) fell in love with it. She asked for it every day when it went away, and is so happy it’s back. We play together, her on one computer and me on another. If nothing else, know that your creation IS appreciated and it IS loved. We respect you bringing a fresh, new, more difficult feel to the Box, and really challenging us to become better players. There will always be people that will complain, but you did the best you could do (this applies to responding on the forums, also), the result was amazing, and nobody should expect more of you than that, especially to be someone you are not.

Oh my goodness I can’t keep up with all these replies! Thank you all so much for reading!
Queen Malafide – Thank you! I’m sure it would be different if we were playing Call of Duty (which I do enjoy but we don’t play that together) or Grand Theft Auto all the time, I just hate how video games as a whole seem to be lumped together in one big pile of “negative influences.”

Firefly – I will be paying for my bad decisions when she gets older if it was a bad move on my part. Don’t worry, though – I own three horses so we do have responsibilities we have to take care of outside every day. She helps me clean stalls and also rides so I promise she does get exercise on the daily. My sister also brings her daughter over regularly and they play on the trampoline or play pretend together. I do agree the things she’s learning from playing games with us she could learn in other ways, but hey, she loves it and has fun doing it. I won’t be the one to deny her something she’s talented at. I appreciate your input and taking the time to reply.

Piogre – My grandpa and I would play Bomberman on his NES for hours. He introduced me to Duke Nukem, QBert, and he had this really weird computer game where you are skiing down a mountain and had to avoid trees and stuff. After so long, a yeti comes and eats you. I could never figure out how to get away from it…

Pokertuna – I teach horseback riding lessons so I understand where you’re coming from. It’s hard to be patient with them all the time, especially when you’re trying to teach them something new. Magic is way, way too complex for her at the moment, but we don’t play tournaments or anything, only for fun, so it’s always been just a casual game for us. We made her a unicorn/horse/pegasus deck and an angel deck. So far she only knows how to read the number in the colorless circle (if there’s a color next to the colorless cost, she doesn’t yet understand she needs to count them both.), but she knows what land is, how many cards to draw, when to draw, how to tap and untap, and say “finished” when her turn is over. I have no idea how to play Poker… you’d have to teach me, lol.

Player Character – LOL! I doubt that. The rocks that jump up when you get close to them always scare her. We managed to make it past all the monkeys on the trees in the second area of W1Z1, but kept falling in lava after that. She was determined to keep trying, though. Sigh. Trib is the bane of my existence.

Elena – I can see where Firefly is coming from. I’m sure it could be very unhealthy if the video games were used as a babysitter and the children were allowed to eat junk food the entire time they’re staring at the computer screen, or if the content they’re being shown is of kitten or stealing or murder or something. It’s all very relative and there’s so many things that have to be taken into consideration, I don’t know if we can just generalize this kind of thing into “its bad” or “its good.”

Zaxares – Oh it was hilarious and I couldn’t stop laughing, but I had to remind her that she had played the game much more than they had, and that she was also a noob once. Whenever they’d get stuck she would offer to help them, so that’s good I guess. >.> Unfortunately, there’s so many more hateful people in the online community than there are nice ones, I’m afraid she will turn into a jerk too. Although, all of the people that have taken the time to read this and watch the video, and continue to read, are restoring my faith in the internet community. Thank you for reading, Zax.

Thanks for reading, Ravious. Once she can work the mouse and keyboard better, I hope she will take part in MMO’s with me. I would never expect anyone other than myself to party up with her, but I agree it instills a sense of teamwork and accomplishment when things are done together – even if it’s just beating a level in SAB or questing in the world. She’s learning patience because, as we all know, SAB is less than a friendly game on anything but Infintile. Learning to pay attention to her surroundings and that things aren’t always what they seem. Other than SAB she is an avid player of Sonic, Spyro, and Crash Bandicoot. She started being really interested in games about a year ago and it has just recently blossomed into being able to play anything almost solely by herself. We had two elementary school boys over the other day and she was owning them in Sonic Unleashed, calling them noobs and all. We are teaching her Magic the Gathering which has been amazing for numbers and math. Once she can read, it will be great for reading. After all the horrible things that have been said about video games, and after seeing how much they’ve helped my daughter, I say shenanigans. Obviously those people weren’t playing the right games. SAB and many others have been a great tool for her.

No awesomeness here, though I appreciate that. Just a mom that loves games.

Thank you for that. At the beginning movie where the princess is taken, she always raises her hand in the air and says, “Save the princess! Our super adventure begins!”

We have now began playing hide and seek in the hub, so if you’re in SAB on Ehmry Bay and see two random characters running around aimlessly, it’s probably us. I must say I am not looking forward to when SAB goes away… she will be so upset. lol.

I have been playing Guild Wars 2 for a little while now, but am still very much a noob. However, this post is not about that. My three year old daughter loves Super Adventure Box. When it first debuted, we played it every day. When it went away, every day we got on the computer, she’d ask me if Super Adventure Box was working. Now that it’s back, we’ve been playing every day. The first day we played for eight hours. Healthy? Probably not, however, Super Adventure Box is more than just a game for us. It’s a tool that allows her to learn problem solving, critical thinking, and coordination. She can work on numbers (in Pain Cliffs we synchronize hitting the number 9 to push the logs). When things go wrong, she used to get very upset and start panicking. Now, she calmly figures out what she can do to get out of the “gooey water” or get out of rushing rapids. She used to sit on my lap and play with me, she’d steer and I’d control the mouse (her hands aren’t quite big enough to do the keyboard and mouse at the same time.), but now she plays on her dad’s computer while I play on mine. We just finished Rushing Rapids on normal mode (usually we play on easy for her sake), and are attempting to tackle Pain Cliffs. I just wanted to say thank you to the developers of Super Adventure Box. You have made my daughter’s life complete, and have assisted in teaching her some valuable skills. Who knew an April Fool’s joke could be so beneficial? ArenaNet rocks. This is a short video of her playing Rushing Rapids for the first time on normal. Maybe not very impressive to you, but for being three, I think she’s pretty awesome.
