I actually solo most things in PvE using my WvW builds… BTR/RRR. It takes a while sometimes (though you can still do tons of damage via conditions in the range of 2500+/s not counting pet), but you hardly ever die which makes tanking bosses something that’s not very difficult. Can solo the krait witches with this build, so it’s definitely PvE viable.

WvW:

1. Settler’s/Apothecary
2. Cleric’s/Soldier
3. Rabid

PvE:

1. Zerker
2. Zerker
3. Zerker

But I ain’t a PvE’er

Yeah me neither. I just walk up and sit there with everything hitting me, completely ignoring it before running off to the next thing. Consider speccing slightly more defensively when you’re gathering.

Pick apothecary/settler’s (a mix works good too) or clerics. Do not mix them. That’s just saying “hey I want to do a little condition damage and a little direct damage, but not much of either”. The only weapon combo that will work even moderately well like that is shortbow and sword/dagger, and not even that good since you’re only a little bit of power with no crit ability when roaming with a build that utilizes high healing power and toughness. Of course you can use runes/sigils to make up for what the rest of your build is lacking to make the condition damage and direct damage slightly more viable, but it’s at a much greater hit to your survivability since the runes/sigils that synergize with healing builds are so much more effective than those that define “little bit of everything” builds.

Pick one or the other is my suggestion.

It depends who you come across. Like I said, both sides have good and bad groups.
It’s a little ridiculous to say all SBI are terrible in open field, because it simply isn’t true.
If you run with a very skilled group on FA, chances are you will come across groups on average who aren’t as good. If you run with an average group on FA, chances are you will split the battles. If you run with a bad group on FA, you will more often than not, get wiped.
I find it silly that good groups always claim how bad the other servers are at open field, when on average, you’ll be fighting groups of people of an average skill level, so you’ll more likely than not… win, since the majority of groups you come across, aren’t very organized.

FA roamers have been great sports this week. Moreso than any other server I remember playing against. Lots of tonics being used and parties being had.

FA has roamers? Other than solo thieves I haven’t seen anyone from FA that hasn’t eventually resorted to zerging it up.

I concur… Faux, we wanna know where this magical place is you’re finding FA roamers. I think the smallest group I’ve run into personally was no less than four.

I haven’t had a tough time at all finding them. Might be good timing.

I liked that part at around 2 minutes where he and a large group of players chased a small group of people all the way into a jumping puzzle on a reset night rather than being useful in more relevant parts of the map.

Wait until you are afk running and come back to dead uplevels next to your drooling pet sephiroth. Then it gets fun.

The score at the end of the week just tell you who had the most people on at night. The score for the first few hours after reset tells you who has the best strategy. It’s pretty much the only time of the week when everyone is on equal footing.

There’s always talk of double teaming every matchup. These players like to ignore that EBay focused the hell out of DB for the first half of the matchup. There was a general mentality of “BP did it, so we’ll do it too”.

But that’s fine. Keep up the QQs about double teaming. I don’t remember any time during the week that CD had 0 PPT this week like we did, during which time CD had our whole borderland and none of theirs. Sounds a bit like the pot calling the kettle black.

Thanks to those on CD who stay classy and keep their conspiracy theories to themselves. Your server has a lot of great people. We all have a few that run against the current.

I’m honestly curiously, though. What’s the point of “group synergy” builds if 7 of them can’t kill 2 people?

I’ll help you out with the WvW lingo. A “group synergy” build is a build that for the most part manages to not die when part of a 50+ man group. Measuring how much group synergy builds contribute to a fight is problematic due to the skill lag involved in such large fights, so their actual effectiveness is somewhat in question.

By definition, you can’t have a “group synergy” build without a group that it is specifically tailored to work well with. In large fights, “their actual effectiveness is somewhat in question” because, unless you are running with a very specific group, there’s no preordained group composition.

It has nothing to do with its ability to not die when part of a 50+ man zerg. You may be looking for another term.

All thieves that chase you across a map only to get killed deserve to be danced on and laughed at. Preferably by naked rangers running longbow and brown bears.

I main ranger and there is no practical use for this skill. What is it for? It is a shout with a cast time that makes you pet guard something? Why? What is there to guard?

Also please don’t say “It’s used for perma regen and swiftness because of its low cool down” because that doesn’t answer my question, doing that just makes it a trait activator whilst ignoring its main effect/mechanic.

Guard is my favorite troll tool with canines. It allows for your canines to almost always land their knockdowns when fighting someone who knows what cues to look for. If you can’t see the pet, that’s the best time to let your pet use its special skills.

Plus the tankiness is great. I wouldn’t run it all the time when roaming in WvW if it didn’t get the extra boons, but there are definitely niche situations in which this utility shines.

I love this thread. If anyone in ANet decides to do one single thing right…

Not going to lie… I am somewhat in love with that monarch leap idea.

It’d be OP. Thinking a better alternative might be to have an invulnerability period of 0.2s or something like that after pet is hit so that it doesn’t die immediately in zergs (but still hit by every attack done in small fights).

Went around with various pets that apply soft CCs and recorded how they were applied. Here’s the video of the results. Basically, the trait is not working correctly. I remember it working a couple days ago, but at the moment it is not. I just left the music I was listening to on the video… worked out to be perfectly timed. Was originally going to do a voice over explaining what’s going on, but it’s pretty self explanatory.

When traited (with relevance to the video)…

For hounds:
• Cripples are supposed to apply for 11s
• Fear applies for kitten
• Immobilization applies for kitten

For spiders:
• Immobilization supposed to apply for 6.5s
• Poison supposed to apply for 5s (per shot/pulse)

The actual applications of these are 66% duration (as if the trait does not apply) except for the poison which works as intended. This can be seen in the video. What isn’t shown is that bleeds from cats don’t apply for the +50% duration either. Oddly enough, the chill from the snow leopard works as intended (12s chill) while the chill from the alpine wolf only applies about 3s chill (though it is supposed to be 5s when traited).

I stopped recording because what’s in the video is enough to show that there is a discrepancy. The pet skills are all messed up. Some work with the 50% added duration and some don’t at all. Most don’t though.

PS: I checked old threads on the subject, and the issue was “pets don’t apply correct duration unless already in combat”. They were almost always in combat already and the results were always the same.

This is why i always laugh at people who say bears are horrible in PvP, sure they don’t do as much damage but you’re not gonna be moving that kittener an Inch especially if you’re direct damage and you’re up against a black bear.

For those of you that play pokemon, think of running a bear pet as having a “wall” IE something to eat hits you don’t want your high damage dealers/essentially status inflicting guys to eat. That’s what i do when i run say a Cat/Bear, or Canine/Pig (or bear) or bird bear etc.

Would be better off just switching to 0/0/30/10/30 for the fight

If I were using a bear pet I wouldn’t be using 30 in BM, would probably have it in marksman and would totally be taking Protect Me! Might leave 10 in BM for the shout reduction but that’d be it.

Meant it more in regards to avoiding the bear :P

The player isn’t important. Fixing the problem is. I can’t tell you how many exploits I’ve found while finding hiding spots in keeps that have been fixed in hotpatches after sending video proof. Don’t use the report function. Send it directly to the team. That’s how you fix these issues, not by ostracizing a player while another takes his place.

Before you say “EBay is full of hackers”, remember its just a few certain people who do it, so don’t be all whining about the server.

Before you ask people not to consider whole server of being hackers, you should make sure that player of that server won’t be ignoring this kind of behavior and instead would give us his name and kindly ask him to stop doing that. If the server population is doing nothing about players like that then it looks like they are fine with it with it which casts a shadow of the integrity of the server itself.

I am sure EB doesn’t need people abusing strategies like these to end up doing really well.

If you don’t want to say his name publicly, then write a private message, send an in-game mail and/or ask him to stop it. Commander abusing stuff like that is really really sad.

Just a heads up, when you call strategies on a given map stupid, it’d be more effective a statement if you actually owned most of that particular map in question.

Plus don’t be THAT GUY who goes and spouts the whole “good fights yada yada” shebang before turning around and trashing the people who gave those supposed good fights. It’s not very classy. Be a good sport or be a bad one. Picking the middle ground there is just being indecisive.

Yeah. Unfortunately we both kill eachothers pets in 15-20s but since he is traited for BM he can swap in that time and I can’t. In this scenario his build is better suited for the fight than mine and he’ll probably keep winning unless I change specs and even then I bet it’d be a tough call.

Gotta take the good with the bad. The root is very helpful in a lot of situations. It’s actually a rare case where we have something good unique to rangers. The only issue is that it takes more effort and skill to utilize.

Because there is a real problem with it. It isn’t just about new rangers. When comparing with all the other classes, none of them have this problem.

Actually, any attack that roots will not let you skip the animation. Just look at heartseeker.

Dodge should override anything, ’nuff said.

It’d be nice if that were the case, but this is not something exclusive to the ranger class. Dodges override channeled skills, but the sword auto is not channeled. It’s an animation, and just like other lengthy animations such as warrior greatsword spin, you can’t dodge in the middle of it.

That’s because you’re smashing 11111111111111111111 instead of actually hitting it when you need to. Skills queue. The delay is there because of the way you are playing.

Definitely a ranger. Make sure to wear berzerker equipment, use a longbow and shortbow, and only run around with a giant brown bear named Yogi. In fact, it might actually be better if you just didn’t wear armor. Nothing is more terrifying to enemy zergs than a longbow ranger and his bear charging them, naked and screaming as the day he was born.

Turn off autoattack and only hit 1 when you need to. People call it a “learn to play” issue because it’s a “learn to play” issue. You need to learn when to have it set to autoattack and when not to.
