I recall that post, but it didn’t have nearly as much detail on the specialization concepts. In the case for eles, for instance, it simply said “either sword or GS”.

My question was if there’s a newer info giving this detail, because it really feels like actual concepts.

I didn’t say it’s not casual, I said it’s a different type of casual. In my opinion, it is targeted toward slightly more invested players, the type more likely to join in guilds and be active in communities rather than wander and explore solo.

Of course, it is still far from hardcore content.

Also, this isn’t actually a bad thing. It’s making the game more diverse, it has to offer something to a wider spectrum of users. Personally, I love the new maps. They get me more involved and they are more rewarding to play, both in loot and feel.

When all is said and done, however, adding in LS2 (or any sort of difficulty ratcheting, however paced) is ultimately a departure from the stroll-in-the-park feeling of ease that attracts so many to core GW2. I’m not sure that even if they feel less overwhelmed by HoT thanks to a transitional phase, players who really feel wedded to the core game’s casualness would change their minds about HoT’s enjoyability, since HoT itself would remain a step above the core game’s challenge.

It’s a fair point. Perhaps HoT was just designed for slightly more invested players. Kind of, ANet wanting to increase the spectrum of casualness their game offers.

Why would you nerf the warrior dps condi build? It has lower dps than all the other dps builds and if you want extra utility from it you have to lower the dps further. If anything the damage should be buffed so it’s a viable.alternative to other pure dps builds.

Riiight, because the warriors aren’t mandatory already. Please be realistic.

Because warrior damage is not high enough to bring him into dps slot instead of traditional dps, and his raid spot is given to him not because of his dps at all, and nerfing his dps will not change anything in raid composition. So, basically you are asking “this guy is too good at chess, so we need to reduce his ability to play football”.

Following the same logic, eles, engis, guards, thieves need their support capabilities buffed like crazy because they can’t qualify for a support spot for their life.

Fast forward a few more arguments like that and we’d end up with every class being able to fill in every role. Which may sound like a good thing but in my opinion removes some of the identity of the classes. Why even have different classes when they can achieve the same results? To just have different animations playing?

As for elemental surge it needs to be a full soft cc effect so burning on fire needs to be changes to slow on fire and the added effect of getting crit dmg after arcain use needs to be changed to a blunt dmg +% for a few sec.

As for glyphs added in self or aoe Alacrity.

First off, nobody cares about soft cc most of the time. Damaging effects are much more valuable and when you actually need soft cc, you’re better off using weapon/utility skills rather than relying on a proc.

Next, slow makes absolutely no sense thematically on Fire. On Water or Earth, sure, why not. But it Fire? It’s just a strapped-on effect, chosen to be different and having zero connection with what it’s been strapped onto.

Same goes for Alacrity on Glyphs. Honestly, it would be just as kittentrapping it on to Ventari, except unlike Ventari Glyph of Storms is a must-have in pretty much every sensible ele build.

It’s just the current, quite rotten state of affairs when it comes to “play your way” in raids…

Come, now…

You can play whatever you want in raids. People beat bosses with half the players, surely you can afford to run something that’s not the absolute optimal. The only difference is, the more suboptimal you are, the less mistakes you’ll be allowed before causing the encounter to fail.

But let me ask you this – what exactly do you want? The possibility to play your way in the raids? Or to be able to play your way in the raids and keep them as easy as they are with the optimal compositions?

Change the trait system.

in Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns

Posted by: Feanor.2358

Feanor.2358

since HOT came out the trait system drasticly changed, in a none positive way, a way that traps players into ONLY playing dedicated builds

Players in general will always stick to more or less optimal builds. Giving more freedom of choice makes it easier to always pick those really strong traits, which results in less build variety. The new system is better in that respect. And not only in it.

Glyphs should at least be reworked. The concept of having attunement based effects on the utility spells is great, however most of them are quite insignificant. The heal is boring, summons are trash, condition based on attunement every 5 seconds should either have a shorter and stronger window rather than 30 seconds of meh and I’ve personally never used a single revive spell. The trait is also pretty weak and misplaced, since glyphs are kinda condition based, while the glyph trait is in air.

Another thing is summoned weapons. It’s not really a good idea to base an entire build to summoned weapons, since you’ll loose utility because of the attunement. Keeping the weapons, but making the summoning time shorter and not locking them to attunement would be a good idea, since it does not limit the elementalist. Also, having charges and a time limit is just a stressfull element. Remove one or another.

FYI, healing glyph is the strongest self-heal available, with a very short cooldown, especially if traited. Traiting also enables you to use it for either perma-swiftness (20s of swiftness on 16s cooldown), on-demand might or protection. Regen I’d say is pretty weak, but that’s the issue of the boon rather than the glyph itself.

Further, Glyph of Storms is the most ridiculously useful skill the class has. Lightning Storm has great damage and vuln applications, while Sandstorm is simply OP against large mobs of non-champion enemies. Firestorm is usable even in power builds, mainly to avoid switching attunements which can result in a dps loss. Think of staff. The damage is decent, if not quite on par with its lightning equivalent. Icestorm is situational, but pretty great when you need to use it (e.g. wargs in Escort).

Glyph of Elemental Power is pretty strong in fire, assuming condi build, and pretty weak otherwise. The main problem is it only offers a single damaging condition, so you’ll always want to pick that.

Elemental summons are just boring, and Glyph of Renewal is way too situational, plus your party members shouldn’t get downed in the first place.

All in all though, I strongly disagree with your assessment of the glyphs. Yeah, there are some meh ones. But there are also two fantastic ones and the mechanic is great.

Conjured weapons do not lock you into attunement, you can still switch attunements and get the related effects while wielding one. Also I don’t think they were ever meant to be a focus of the build. They are really good at filling gaps, which makes me think that was their design goal.

Then post chrono dps increase ideas. I have absolutely 0 problems with mesmers/chronos becoming a viable dps profession. As long as it’s viable and not only option as it is now with tanking if you need your raid dps to be serious (like KC or Gorse).

Also guard + reve also ain’t the dps wombo-combo. Guard can (and should) have high dps with boon duration build. That’s ok. But rev on the other hand has to sit on ventari, so most likely a healer. Expect bad dps here as well.

The point is, this kind of changes are unlikely to come before an expansion. Way too much balance changes, and you’d need to do the balance anyway for the new specializations. Might as well just do it once.

I’ll make it as short as possible since you refuse to accept logic that is served in too long form.

Chrono elite = 10 people affected.
Guardian elite = 5ppl affected.

Two guardians = 100% quickness uptime for raid? Only with:

a) two revs (alacrity + soothing bastion extra duration)
b) doubling the potency of their elite – either via number of targets (10) or base duration.

And even then it’s close, but not perfect 100% uptime.
It’s already bad enough that it takes 2 professions to team up (and with major boost to elite needed) to replace a single chrono. Don’t gimme me that OP sob story, that’s like crying you ain’t got a pistol at home, when you got a kitten cannon sitting on your lawn.

But guardian dps is way higher. And people can’t accidentally step out of your wells. It is true that giving an alternative to chrono would make it utterly useless. See revenant’s state for reference.

Ele is a pretty strong healer. Very high sustain, lacks spike heals which druid has. Can also apply permanent regen and protection. But. No party dps buffs, so it’s only used when you absolutely have to, mostly in novice groups.

Frankly, nothing can replace the druid unless they provide the same party buffs. You forgot Spotter btw.

I’d much rather Might and Fury be the go-to damage increasing boons, and things that give +10% damage and similar abilities removed completely.

Again though this isn’t needed. You only have to cap how high damage modifiers can go.

If its 10% from food and 10% from any other status/non-boon source, then it doesn’t matter if every class has 10% damage modifiers. People will take whatever works best for them/their group.

A cap like this is bad design. It’s counter-intuitive and obscure – it says X gives you 10% more damage but it actually doesn’t because Y already gave it to you. Not to mention introducing such modifier pooling would require rebalancing pretty much the whole game.

Really it is now is it ?

So our entire boon system is somehow counter-intuitive ? Because guess what, its the same stuff different name working the same way.

Boons have a visualization. Partially to help players with the exact same problem.
You also ignored the part about rebalancing the whole game. Rest assured the devs would look at every possible other solution before resorting to this.

Which is why nerfing Grace of the Land into a might-stacking mechanic would both ratchet down the power creep and provide alternatives for raid compositions.

Agreed, this would be an elegant solution. Though it might still not be enough to warrant a different healer, because: Spotter, spirits. However, if spirits get the banners treatment, and even more so if Empower Allies and Spotter do, that could actually do the trick.

Stopped playing ele after the last nerf. You would think the squishiest class in the game.

i dunno about that, they are just as tanky as most other class’s. at 2500 armour/18k health and with all of the auras/protection they chuck out i rate them very durable, and thats with out building to play frontline aura share (wvw) not sure abut spvp but thats an amulet issue.

Except you never play anything beside full zerk in PvE, where the numbers look… umm.. a bit differently.

Ele still has top DPS over large hitboxes (with Sc/Wh) and moderate DPS over small boxes (Sc/Wh)

Staff (e.g. ez mode) has been nerfed though.

1. In theory. In practice you dance on your keyboard trying to squeeze out as much dps as you can, then you look at the dps meter and see a thief who’s just autoattacking on his staff have the same numbers.

2. Staff has never been easy mode. There are still those eles who think it is, and these are the famous sub-10k dps eles.

Some Constructive Feedback of Mallyx

Hello fellow players (and hopefully curious developers!) I wanted to share some constructive feedback after creating and playing with a new Mallyx/Glint Mace/Axe condition damage build:

http://gw2skills.net/editor/?vlAQJApnn3geNSuQvJRboHlsP0kS4I6SJ4EtrkFNFKtDjoEtLIANwegJshA-TBSFQBjUJYDV+1O9EA4BBkgTIgS2Hofq/ctFGCAcAsbdD6ubGf8xHf8xb3d3d3d3tUALqsC-e

Just a remark – you can use Balthazar runes instead of the Nightmare/Trapper combo. You still cap Burning, Torment and Poison durations, you come a little ahead on Condition Damage and it’s much cheaper.

Other than that, I’m having lots of fun with the exact same build. It is true its damage is subpar and Mallyx doesn’t really add much in terms of condi applications.

I think eventually people are going to have to move away from the whole “designated buffer” mentality that they currently have before we can progress forward much more from here. And ANet is moving towards that way in my opinion.

Take Ventari Rev getting alacrity, its a step in the right direction. No, it does not replace Chrono. However, it could substitute as a source of alacrity if no chronos were available (with a few tweaks to still allow it to deal reasonable damage, at least at the chrono tanks level). Similarly, if the next elite specs bring out someone that can provide a reasonable uptime on quickness, not 100% though, while still providing other utility (whether damage or something else), then both ventari Rev and this new spec could together replace the group utility that a chrono would provide. With good design, the two of them together on the group would also provide more overall utiltiy than a chrono does, so effectively you could take chrono for a single slot to provide both alacrity and quickness, or you could use 2 slots to get almost the same amount of quickness and alacrity uptime (but not 100%) but with more other utility (again, whether its damage, healing, or something else).

They’d still be designated buffers. Ventari rev will never match the dps of a damage dealer, and it is only normal. On a side note, it is one of the problems with the current condi PS state – they deal far too much damage for the amount of group buffs they supply. But the problem isn’t there are designated buffers. The problem is there are no alternatives.

Feanor.2358

I know ele used to stack might. And I know you can get pretty much anything you want with an ele. However, outside of raids it just doesn’t matter. Bring whatever you want, you still make it.

And yes, you can still produce boons. The problem is, they’re irrelevant in raids. Because the boons that matter are already supplied, better. The PS brings the Might, the Druid brings the Fury. The rest of our boons aren’t that important in fights. Protection can be useful, but, again, it’s better supplied by other professions, mainly because we have to sacrifice too much to get it.

And it’s not like an ele can’t have good dps. Yes, the potential is still top-tier. However, the average player cannot get as close to this potential as he can for easier builds. Meaning the average player will actually perform better on an easy class. You can argue this is just a normal thing in a game and you might be right. But it still feels unfair. Even if you’re really good, you’re only going to excel on large hitboxes and you’re likely to get outperformed by less skilled players putting less effort on small ones. It just feels bad, meaning the class isn’t balanced properly.

Ele Patch Notes

Perfectly.

Protection uptime from ele is zero. Unless you’re special snowflaking. The meta builds are all Fire/Air/Tempest. They don’t have prot on aura (which is Earth trait) and they don’t share auras (which is Water trait). The only aura they could apply is Fire Aura from “Feel the burn!”. Which is irrelevant, since it requires you to get hit, which you don’t want as it screws your scholar uptime.

Healing is irrelevant, since druids overheal anyway and you want them to spam as many heals as possible for GotL.

Ele fields help… in reducing Necromancer’s dps. All Brutal Bolts do is apply vuln and guess what, an ele caps vuln comfortably by itself. Which makes them, you guessed correctly, irrelevant.

So… what’s left? That’s right, dps. All your “support” is options you could in theory pick but never do for they are suboptimal.

Of course they’ll be egoistical toward their conjures. Take them and you’re reducing their only contribution for the group. A Necromancer can actually benefit more from the icebow, but it screws an already complicated rotation. So I can perfectly understand eles being unhappy when you steal their conjures, even if it yields more dps.

Basi venom + more mobility. There, a Thief also does stuff an ele can’t do without losing dps. 4 thieves probably isn’t a great idea though I’m fairly certain you can clear with such comp too. But just because the current meta has certain classes covering certain tasks it doesn’t mean nobody else can do these. Or they make up for the lack of dps in a real raid scenario.

We have every possible lore reason to ignore Queen Jennah as a possibility of being Lazarus. No human is capable of absorbing a bloodstone explosion. This has been discussed in the lore forums so I won’t repeat the arguments here, but essentially not even a human as powerful as Queen Jennah could absorb the bloodstone. The one time something similar happened, that human was blessed by the 5 human gods in power at that time. So yeah it can’t possibly be Queen Jennah or ANY member of the playable races or some of the lesser known ones.

OK, new theory – it’s actually Lazarus who pretends to be Jennah who pretends to be Lazarus. He travelled back in time after being revived with chronomantic powers to pull the trick. Bellaception!

Do you realize that for cleans orbs at xera it have to stop DPS xera? Meaning in a DPS Loss overall? And he porbably Will Also lack gotl and maybe quickness when it come back?
And cleave is not only nice to have, but in some encounters it can means that secondary mobs die slower, doing more damage at the whole group, meaning again, an overoall DPS Lost.

Again, the point wasn’t about cleave/range, it was about survivability.

Trust me, if you can do 30k on Gorse you’re nothing like average.

Obviusly I was talking about First phase only, After that it always drop a bit to me (even 5k lower sometimes)
But I’m pretty sure a lot of people can do it, Just usually people do slow cc, while you Need to breackbar instantly.

Making it 25k on average? That’s still waaay above the average numbers. Frankly, when we get to pug a tempest I’m happy if he manages to make 12k on average for the whole fight.

You just have engis dealing with streamlined kits, Necros dealing with both field priority and having to clip whirl finishers into the hitbox lest they lose chilling bolts hits. Condi ranger I won’t speak of since I don’t play it.

And yes thieves do die more than eles, because raid thieves are pure melee with no self recovery mechanics. Besides there are no mechanics that will down a ele but not down a thief.

Also really when was the last time anyone ever asked for a thief in their raid slot? The only time thieves get taken is if the group can’t get a ele.

Engis are an exception. Necros have to work with a clumsy mechanic, but it is comparable to what eles need to do with Phoenix, so I’d call that a tie. Plus, you can always take more necros, don’t bother at all with combo fields and just epi-bomb everything to the win. On a side note, for this strategy it’s beneficial to have a condi burn ele around to supply with baseline burn stacks.

Condi ranger is just easy, period.

Theif is melee, true, but so is the ele, really. First of all, you don’t want to leave the group or you lose wells, heals and buffs in general. Second, to get the most out of your Wildfire you need to be in melee range. So while you technically can move further away, you never really do. I’d call this a tie, too.

Lastly, the reason people aren’t asking for thief isn’t that the thief is worse. In fact, most of the eles can’t match the numbers a thief manages by only autoattacking

Most of the time though im confident the story goes a general direction ive paid attention to, my suspicion, Lazarus “is” an ally, but decieved both us and the mantle to amass followers.

Who?

Gleam, the son of Glint, who basically gave the master of peace the Egg, who was protected by the dragon cult of dwarves branded traitors to their own (Which is why we find the clawmarks in the mursaat room of Ember Bay).

Why would Gleam care about the Mantle, though? Sure, Lazarus didn’t hesitate to kill some of them. Sure, he might have the “mursaat loyalist” fraction of the Mantle relocated and having nothing to do with the attack on DR. But still, why? Gleam has no use of the White Mantle. If anything, he’d be interested in Bloodstone’s power, and he already got it. Why keep the masquerade, what purpose does that serve?

The tempest belong to those that can patch the flaws without losing to much dps. It doesn’t mean that it’s easier to play a tempest than a thief and it doesn’t mean that you will have more survivability than a reaper. However, a tempest have the ability to act as a cement for your raid that cover a few hole, yet dish out a sufficient amount of dps.

But “pug tempest” has become something of a meme in our group. We’d rather pug anything else (necro and rev included). Sure, there are good tempests. But the vast majority aren’t.

By the way, I play tempest on 13/13 raid bosses. But it doesn’t make it a particularly good choice.

Edit: Here someone else raises the same point I’m trying to make. For average players, it’s preferable to pick easier classes. Which isn’t a bad thing on its own, however they have literally no incentive to master the harder class.

And be honest, are you sure you Just don’t want to go back in the old 4Tempest metà because you are a crybaby and you don’t want competition vs other classes?
Is far for you that Tempest was the only viable DPS class back in those days?
Isn’t a good, health, and fair thing that Also other classes have a spot in raids?
What do you think about the fact that Revenant, necro, and sometime Also DH and thieves, are not allowed in any “real” raid bosses?
Is that fair?

The problem is, you can be just as viable, if not more, by putting considerably less effort with another class like condi ranger or thief. No, it’s not fair. Not by a long shot.

Tempest was never the most viable dps. It was perceived as one because everyone assumed they can do reasonably close to what qT showed. Since dps meters went legal, we know how far from the truth this is. People would have shifted toward other damage dealers anyways.

Like it is now, it’s not a question of whether you can pick another class. It’s a question of why to pick a Tempest. Let me make a quick analysis on my own:

  • VG – no special reason for ele. It’s decent, if you’re good. “Rebound!” can be helpful but if your group needs it your dps will probably be a bit lacking too so an easier damage dealer can be just as helpful.
  • Gorseval – you can take staff for orb clearing, mostly relevant if you’re doing updrafts. If you skip them, go for the dps. Again, ele is decent, but nothing special. Unless you’re really good. Whiich 95% of the players aren’t.
  • Sabetha – take Lightning Flash and go cannons. Your group sacrifices dps for the task anyway, and the condi rangers will kill the boss anyway.
  • Slothasor – Gale Song is nice, enough to warrant the lower dps said 95% of the players would get.
  • Trio – Take a rev if you want, nobody cares. You win anyway.
  • Matthias – no special reason for a Tempest.
  • Escort – see “Trio”.
  • KC – no special reason for a Tempest. Sure, don’t take a condi ranger. But you’re probably better with a Thief (95% certainty).
  • Xera – staff for shards and “Rebound!” for buttons. Since you’ll be directing part of your dps away, you’d be outdps’d for sure, but it’s a necessity.
  • Cairn – no special reason for Tempest.
  • Overseer – no special reason for Tempest.
  • Samarog – no special reason for Tempest.
  • Deimos – no special reason for Tempest.

So that makes 3/13 encounters where you have an incentive to bring a Tempest. Cool place for the most difficult power builds in the game, huh?

Can’t tell you about about PvP, but Ele is still top tier in PvE.

All of its Power DPS variants (Dagger/Warhorn, Scepter/Warhorn, Staff) are much higher DPS than any other class when dealing with a Large hit-box targets (36k-38k).

In a perfect world where you make no mistakes, the target doesn’t move, doesn’t hit you , doesn’t make you move/dodge, but neither does it prevent you from moving at all.

In the real world, you have to be very, very experienced with Tempest to match the DPS of other damage dealers, let alone beat it.

Let’s drop all this generic talk and do examples. Raid scenario. What are these things a Tempest can do and other profession can’t? Two things come to mind – Gale Song on Slothasor and “Rebound!” on Xera buttons. What else? Is it enough to make Tempest a good choice? And again, does the comparison from my previous post feel fair?

And how is your “have no real basis” any different than “isn’t viable”? Both are just subjective assessments. Both aren’t strictly true in that they are both too extreme.

Tempest is still viable, meaning you can still beat all the content with it and produce more or less competitive dps. That’s a fact.

However, in terms of risk/reward, picking a Tempest now is much harder to justify and many groups have recognized that and shifted toward condi rangers (including fractal groups, but that’s just mindless bandwagon-ing). This, also, is a fact.

Does it seem fair for this to outperform this , if only by a hair’s breadth? Forget the group utilities and survivability, just look at the execution. A problem exists and rejecting it on the basis that Tempest is “viable” is exactly the same clown fiesta type of discussion you’re complaining about.

Right, try to blow the arguments you don’t like to absurd proportions and announce you’re out of the debate. Where have I seen this…

If only I got a gold coin for every “Lazarus is (insert_random_character_name)” thread. If only…
Abaddon-Lazarus, Queen Jennah-Lazarus, Glint-Lazarus. I can’t understand why people want something that makes no logical sence, no buildup and no story cohesion but is “surprising”. Just to shout “What a twist!” maybe?

I’d argue Queen Jennah theory has at least some of these.

First, logical sense. As seen in “Head of the Snake”, she’s remarkably powerful. So, it seems safe to assume she has the means pose as Lazarus, and more importantly, absorb the magic from the Bloodstone. Doing so would gain her the support of a significant part of the White Mantle. Even if it isn’t all of them, it still can be used for two separate goals – disrupting Caudecus’ plans and using the White Mantle threat to gain more power in Kryta’s court. We saw both happen. So, she has the means and she has the motive. After this I’d be more surprised if Jennah doesn’t turn out a lot darker than she’s portrayed so far. Not necessarily as the fake Lazarus, but I’m not ruling it out.

Ele get for free a stunbreack + stab + protection with overloads.

Running Gale Song is generally a slight dps loss. 3 seconds of protection and a stack of stability every now and then doesn’t change that much.

It has One powerfull evade in staff Fire 4 that is also a crazy mobility tool and help in a lot of situation with out lose dps (hello sloth’s poison, gorseval Smash, samarog spear Attack, Just to list some)

Except staff isn’t optimal on any of these. You can still pick it on Gorse for orb clearing, I’ll give you that.

can have more selfsusistain running a GM trait in Tempest that doesn’t impact in your DPS.

True, albeit minor.

Also, if running rebound, you can prevent a full wipe.

Correct, but a dps loss. Also, having your next point in mind, you shouldn’t really need to take it, except on Xera. And there only for convenience.

Also we also have to take in Mind that since we have dedicated healers, if you die with ANY CLASS is Just because you fail at mechanics or not dodging crucial attacks, not because you are squishy.

Correct, however it just translates into difficulty. Less EHP means less room for mistakes, hence higher requirement towards execution, hence higher difficulty. Just like with suboptimal gear stats.

But do mechanics and Dodge crucial skill is way harder to do while you have also to do an harder DPS rotation.

And this after you used ele Staff as an example… Engi doesn’t have a skill that roots you in place for 2+ seconds in order to get your dps. And neither does an engi need as precise ground targeting of skills as a Sc/W ele does.

I agree engi rotation is harder on the golem, but in a real raid scenario they are comparable in difficulty.
