Not looking for speculation. I’m mainly just curious how long this new server population WvW count will take to have a decent trend line. I’ve seen in another thread that someone was wanting to transfer to a t1 server that ended up full after being open for a few days. Therefore, it must be some kind of rolling average. (Ha! Now I’m guessing.) Of course we’ll never know. That’s their territory, but it’d be nice if we knew more about how it works now. I’ll go out on a limb: I wouldn’t be surprised if whatever calculation or tracking they’re doing is actually being used to monitor WvW population 24/7 for each server so they can get real data related to imbalances, ebbs and flows of what really goes on over the course of a 168hr matchup.

I’m aware that the way server populations for WvW were changed, but now I’m wondering after that first round of server population changes took place… what will the next round look like? How often does this calculate? Could someone link me the post/info, if there is any, where I can get a better understanding of it? Wouldn’t the list of server populations also be a good indicator of the current status of WvW? If WvW is on life support then there should be more population declines for the servers below t4? Or am I mistaken?

It would be nice if it were optional, absolutely! It would also be great if we could resize it and maybe have a small pop-up at the top/bottom of the minimap, or at some other spot on screen. The big notification is too much.

@Catalin. Just noticed you said NE tower will be the next one. Ugh, that north wall makes me naseous. Why?! Why would a tower wall be leaning inward 20-25° that makes no sense. Unless you want to make #arrowcartlife ridiculous.

Guild hall costs are insane for small guilds

I honestly don’t even know what the function of guild halls is, so you aren’t being punished that much. It’s just something you want.

For guilds that play WvW the guild hall is critical to their success in WvW. All of the guild “buffs/enhancements” that WvW guilds had before HoT were reset to zero, nada, square one. The tiers were mixed up, new stuff was added. It’s “one” of the reasons there have been so few people in WvW since HoT release. Guilds are grinding and farming their kittens off trying to regain everything that was reset. The costs are immense and daunting! There has even been a possible oversight of removing an area of the game that contained the ONLY place one certain item (required for guild hall upgrades) dropped.

There is a kitten ton of great content in the new guild hall system. You should check into it

Was in WvW today with my guild for about two hours. Historically, we usually raid about 3 hours, then have an “after raid” for however long people stick around. The entire two hours I was with my guild today, we never left EBG. We had a few decent fights with another server, though. Mainly because we were denying them (what we believed to be a guild mission) taking a camp. We farmed them for a few rounds then moved on and let them have the camp. We capped all of EBG before I had to leave for work. Historically, we always secured our own BL map before anything else. The home BL always had priority over any other map. That is no longer the case with the new BL, at least for now. Two hours on Teamspeak and no mention of BL map. Two hours in EBG and no mention of nor reports or support requests from the home BL map. This is sad. We’ll be raiding again tomorrow. If anything changes I’ll update again.

Edit 11.4.15: Today was worse than yesterday. No fights/resistance in EBG, no fights resistance in BL.

So, the Capt. Obvious take on Colin’s statements is… there aren’t enough Devs at ANET to go around? Imagine how frustrating it’s gotta be to be a full time skeleton crew WvW Dev. Must be overwhelming. Is it even possible to shift to a skeleton crew for PvE? Besides there is a long list of items that will be added over the next few months. Then all the bugs that come with those will be addressed.

My personal prediction for WvW to get more than a skeleton crew’s worth of attention is May of 2016… IF they don’t release any Living Story in April.

I saw some of the guards at back door to the EBG keeps fighting each other today. The keep had been capped about 10mins, then suddenly some of the guards turned traitor and started attacking the other guards.

1) Centaurs in alpine borderland map dropped these. No longer accessible.
2) Coztic frogs reported to drop these. FALSE. They drop [Heavy Bag of Supplies]
3) Dredge in Frostgorge Sound reported to drop these. FALSE. They drop mining supply bags.
4) sPvP reward track Kryta (?) reported to give these at 3rd and 23rd. unconfirmed.

@Chaba. Basically, WvW is broken. Has been broken for years. Is so broken it can’t be properly fixed. It gets a fresh coat of paint every once in a while, but the stains on the carpet won’t come clean, the ceiling is leaking, and the rotary phone on the desk is covered in dust and cobwebs.

I’m on a different server now… Anyways, there’s a place in Lion’s Arch where us solo guild/storage guild folks can operate out of. I haven’t investigated it yet, but it is there.

How is the loot and wxp for you compared to in the past? Will it be able to sustain whatever you are doing? Did it take a hit, or was it improved? If you are planning to unlock an elite specialization, do you think you were helped or hurt in these regards? Do you think you could pursue any other in-game goals just by playing WvW?
How will the map change impact the long sessions (multiple hours) you spend in WvW?

I’ve never been able to sustain myself from what I get in WvW. WvW has always been a massive gold sink, and nothing has changed.

In 100 words or less, describe how the new BLs could be improved.
The layout of the areas is hideously flawed, and is the real root problem for countless other complaints. That can be fixed, and I was hoping it would be with the new maps, but the same flaws were repeated. The keep needs to be in the very back line, the towers need to be between it and the enemy thirds (in FRONT of the keep, not behind them….), and the camps need to support them. Flip the entire north upside down, and it’ll be a good start. The south would need a bit more shifting around to fix. The paths should funnel the players to the objectives, which is where the fights should be encouraged at. Not funneling them away from the objectives, and encouraging fights to never happen.

In 100 words or less, describe how the borderlands work to a new WvW player.
With the new maps, look for a tag, join the karma train, spam 1, wave to the 2 enemy players you see along the way.

Simply put…. they don’t. They took out what they had right from the old maps, and went full steam ahead with what they had laughably wrong.

Nice list, here’s another to add to it:

-Centaurs in old BL that dropped Heavy Supply Bags didn’t relocate to new BL.

Seriously though, I found a spot above and just south of (on the little mesa near the Sentry) NE borderland camp that you can treb NE tower from. You’ll get aj’d most likely, but it’ll reach.

edit: As of this moment Heavy Supply Bags are now selling for about 2g each on trading post, lol.

2nd edit: I’ve been spending some time in NE tower trying to learn it’s siege spots. That north wall… what the kitten? Is it leaned over like that —JUST-- to screw up arrow cart placement?

Does anyone know if the Heavy Supply Bag still drop anywhere? They used to drop from centaurs in the old borderlands map. I went to that Hinterlands place looking for centaurs to drop them and only got Light Supply Bag. Someone please tell me ANET didn’t remove the only place in the entire game where these actually dropped?!

edit: someone told me they drop from dredge in far shiverpeaks… checking to confirm. As far as I can tell, those dredge only drop Heavy Mining Bags?

Quick guide to Desert Borderlands

@ the Palace inner north wall, arrow carts will get hit by a balista in the little corner spot. Easiest counter I found is to put a treb in the open space near the bottom of the stairs to lords room. 2 hits at about 60% power will wreck anything or anyone that climbs up onto that corner spot. You can also place an arrow cart above the left side of that north inner gate that can’t be meteored but it can still hit everything around the gate area.

I’ve got a question about the floater outside the Oasis gate at Rampart. Can it be hit from the ground by meteor or balista? I haven’t had a chance to test that yet.

Fortified gates do give you plenty of time to build waste siege to burn through a full supply so you can deny the attackers any.

Hello, my name is John Corpening. I’m the game director for World vs. World in Guild Wars 2.

Shortly after I took over the World vs. World team I implemented the Adopt-A-Dev program for our team to investigate fully the state of World vs. World.

Our goal is great matches and our core pillars in support of this goal are Strategy, Competition, Collaboration, and rewarding the contributions of both players and guilds

As work on Heart of Thorns wraps up, we’ll be treating resolving the remaining core areas in WvW as our #1 live development feature priority for the game to ensure we deliver on making World vs. World not just the great experience it is today – but the incredible experience we know it can be. An example of this work in progress is the recent change to how world populations are determined.

I never knew that Adopt-a-Dev ever happened. I certainly never saw a Dev tagged up in WvW.

We need another Adopt-a-Dev. 12 week minimum. 3 Devs minimum on same server for a week at a time so they can cover 3 eight hour shifts (24 hrs) and witness what happens.

It’s a shame that this wasn’t even thought of before launch. ‘looking at’ as in trying to write something or ‘looking at’ in the same way many bugs in wvw existed for years before being fixed? would be nice to know whether it’s being actively coded rather than on a list of ‘get around to after HoT reports no bugs for a month’.

It’s definitely an after. They probably think it’s a good idea, but they don’t know where to put it? Maybe they can’t decide which WvW currency they’ll make use to get it.

We are looking at adding a way for players to earn Quickloot in WvW as well. We wanted to keep PvE progression (Masteries) separate from WvW progression (Ability Lines). However this means when a new Mastery ability is created, that might also be useful in another gamemode, it doesn’t automatically crossover.

Thank you. Also, I’ll give you a pass on that PvE separate from WvW… new BL is pve map, new lords are pve bosses, etc. Anyways, Quickloot in WvW would make a lot of people happy.

Q: Hasn’t the center of the borderlands map been a fail since launch? This is just another fail, imo. As long as the WvW Devs ignore players, the center of the map will always be a failure. At least the ruins actually did something semi-worthwhile for other players.

I do like your idea. As it is now, that thing is just a waste of time. Would be nice if the Devs actually explained why they put it there in the first place, how exactly it was meant to be used, and by whom.

I totally understand being the bottom server in a match. That’s where one of the real horror’s of WvW opens it’s jaws and consumes your will to fight. I’ve been there many, many times over the years. Then when you’re getting stomped over and over you find yourself even more outnumbered due to people losing to numbers. So, what have the WvW Dev’s provided for the server(s) in the match that are hopelessly outnumbered… They gave us the “outnumbered” buff.

—How could the outnumbered buff be improved to help the brave souls willing to stand and fight? Would adding a celestial type stat buff to it help without being OP? My only concern with doing something like that would be that players become “hooked on having a stat crutch” or something to that effect.

—For me, the biggest fails of the new BL map are: (I’ll be adding more as I play the map more; and adding wins also)

1) WvW devs adding “events” to this map; the kitten kitten kittening events in a WvW map are the —->PLAYERS battling other PLAYERS<—- the end.

1 fix) Remember the giant lake in the old borderlands with the PvE event snake-people? It got removed (thank you) and replaced with something (ruins) that wasn’t perfect but was actually semi-useful that players could do for or against other players. Please remove the “canon PvE event”, please. I wouldn’t miss the dredge, frogs, ogres in EBG either (or make them perma-hostile to everyone).

2) Personally, I struggle to tolerate the fact that there are even sentries, guards, claimers/keep lords that aren’t actual players.

2 fix) Remove all “fighting NPC’s” from the map and let actual players fill those roles and locations. Want to have a “sentry” at a choke or crossroads? Let it be a player that actually enters a tiny tower/shack where they can see their surroundings (love the sentry radar thing btw) and be unable to attack/be attacked as long as they are occupying that spot. When they leave it? It goes neutral. Want to have a tower to defend a small area of the map? Let it be an actual player that takes on the role of the claimer/lord and directs the upgrades of the tower (claimer/defender tag instead of a commander tag? with appropriate, objective tier-linked “lord” buffs for that individual; the sacrifice for that kind of power is you’re not going anywhere not even out of the room). When it’s unoccupied or has no player to claim it and direct it? It degrades tiers and goes neutral if someone else doesn’t take over then nobody gets PPT for that objective. Want to have a keep? See previous statement about towers; better yet, why not be unable to get a tower in the area around the keep until you’ve managed to claim, hold, and upgrade the keep? But server X doesn’t have as many players as server Y and can’t hold as many objectives to get as much PPT? That’s already the state of WvW.

TLDR: —-Sorry if I went off on a soapbox there. I’m just saying let actual players fill the roles of sentries, guards, claimers/lords. The score would be more honest and actually have a better sense of being “earned”.

I’m chasing a rabbit here but… could we ever have leaderboards for Servers/Guilds/Individuals with corresponding rewards for Servers/Guilds/Individuals. e.g. game play rewards for actual game play like 24hr boost to magic find, gold, Wxp, etc. ( guild boosts like a 24hr Hero Banner; 24hr personal boosts that are already in game, power, armor, etc.)

The irony of a huge map being named Desert Borderlands… full of tons of “stuff” most of the people I play WvW with don’t like.

That’s exactly what I realized a few mins ago while reading another thread. We’ve been pronouncing it wrong all along. It’s not desert as in a hot, dry, sandy place, it’s desert as in deserted… It’s the Desert-ed Borderlands… at least for now.

If the new BL was awesome, wouldn’t the die hard WvW crowd have been in there 24/7 since the new reset? …and the awesomeness of the map would’ve gone viral? …and the BL ques would’ve been horrendous? …and the forums be filled with drooling and giddiness? Has that ever happened?

Personally, I’ve put in some time on the new BL and plan to do a marathon later this week to watch and learn how the 3 headed blob server we’re matched up against attacks and moves around. But everytime I’ve logged in since HoT release, I don’t feel any gravity to the new BL. Personally, I’m a WvW vet, but I’m just not excited about nor drawn to it. Perhaps it’s because of the matchup; knowing the outcome was already decided 5 seconds after reset. Perhaps all I kept seeing and hearing and reading about the new BL had me hyped up and the actual realities of the map crushed my kitten expectations.

But Im NOT in WvW for a map. In spite of my personal disappointment I’ll be playing the new BL because it’s there …and I’ll be playing it with my guild folks and server folks …and it’ll be fun because we’ll moan and groan and gripe and complain together, while we fight and die together.

Hello WvW Community.

  • Describe a typical hour for you in the Alpine Borderlands in the past. For example, What size of group were you running in? What kind of tasks did you run? What activities did you do

—Depended on relative time of day. If I was on late night then I would be in home bl to help others control camps and supplies flowing to keeps that were in the process of upgrading. Also, flipping back anything that was taken. If I was on during my daylight hours then I was usually with my guild raid, or if it was an off day I’d be scouting keeps.

  • Compare your experience described above with a typical hour spent in Eternal Battlegrounds, if you went there at all. Does your style of play change between the 2 maps?

—Typical hour in EBG would be spent supporting whomever was tagged up.

  • Compare your experiences described above with an hour spent in the new borderlands.

— I actually got to spend an hour with my guild’s raid in the new bl today. Most of it was spent feeling lost and slow. However, some of us did manage to wp into our garri (?) and defend it when it was attacked.

  • Describe the nature of combat in the borderlands in the past. How have the new borderlands impacted this paradigm for you? What style or build changes might it cause? For example, knocking people off cliffs or into lava might play a more important role.

—Old bl was fun because it didn’t take long to find a fight. Can’t really comment on the way the new bl has impacted me yet; it’s still too new. I can say that so much running around is really boring. *If I want to fear troll people to their deaths I’ll go to EotM; I do NOT want it in a real WvW map. Knocking people off etc. is NOT an important role. It is merely cruel kittening/trolling (like the CC/IceBow used to be) which belongs in EotM, not a real WvW map.*

  • In your experience, compare the time it takes take a structure or objective here, then it did in the past.

—Didn’t really notice any difference during guild raid today. 1) I was only able to participate in guild raid for an hour. 2) There was zero defense of the keep we captured.

  • How is the loot and wxp for you compared to in the past? Will it be able to sustain whatever you are doing? Did it take a hit, or was it improved? If you are planning to unlock an elite specialization, do you think you were helped or hurt in these regards? Do you think you could pursue any other in-game goals just by playing WvW?

—The loot? I didn’t notice a difference? Again, I was only in WvW with my guild for an hour today. Sustain what I’m doing? Ehh, I’m trying to learn how to get around the map, so, NO, the BL map and mini map aren’t helping me sustain that? They’re way too vague; I can’t tell at a glance how to get anywhere by looking at the map or minimap. Unlocking an elite specialization? First impression is those plans have been hurt by this new BL, but it’s probably still too early to be certain. Other in-game goals? I don’t really understand that question. I play WvW to fight other players… either with my guild raid, with a small group, or solo. Why would I want to accomplish “other in-game” goals by playing WvW? I play WvW to play WvW. You lost me there.

  • How will the map change impact the long sessions (multiple hours) you spend in WvW?

—Can’t answer that one yet. I’ll be pulling a marathon this Thursday/Friday though just to find out.

  • In 100 words or less, describe how the new BLs could be improved.

—Give permanent, base, stackable 25% speed buff to everyone while they’re on home BL. (i.e. acquire buff from NPC at spawn; lose it when you leave the map or upon downed state/killed)
—Remove fall damage. Replace with a stun dependent upon fall distance.
—Remove that thing from the center of the map. Replace it with a large, flat, open field.
—Make map/minimap show/trace routes when you click on an objective..
—Keep the 3 BL maps, but _rotate/sync/apply PPT from_ only one BL (current match last place) for every 3 hours. Have that map be to the advantage of the current match last place server (think GW1 Factions Alliance Battle rotation?)

  • In 100 words or less, describe how the borderlands work to a new WvW player.

—This will be difficult. Level 80 only please. At first you will die a lot. Dying doesn’t matter. Fight to the death. Do not run away. Get on TeamSpeak (etc.) and follow your commander’s orders if you’re going to follow the commander. If you see enemies don’t be afraid to speak up and say so; please if possible say which server, how many, and where/which direction you saw the enemies.

  • In 100 words or less, describe how the borderlands work to a veteran WvW player that is new to the maps.

—You must resist the kitten. There’s still hope. This is just the “new” square one. At first this will be difficult. Some of the siege looks different. You will spend a lot more time running from point A to point B. There are shrines out there to cap that do something new. There are levers somewhere that do something. Wait, I AM a veteran WvW player, but I don’t know how this BL works.

  • Which map am I most likely to find you currently, if you’re on Gw2?

—Home BL wandering around sad and lost yet not without hope.

10.27.15 Edit: OK, I came back to add more info to my post, but while I was reading the other posts in this thread I had a eureka moment. We’ve been calling it the Desert Borderlands… desert as in a big, hot, dry, sandy wasteland… which in some ways could be used to describe the current state of the new BL maps; however, I believe we’ve all been getting it wrong …maybe… it’s pronounced like this quote from a dictionary:

Even if there were plenty of people playing, the maps are so big you would hardly ever meet.
2 zergs could miss each other even if they are in the same keep.

I saw that happen today. Mainly because once inside the keep, nobody knew how to get to the lord before it capped. Which is really kitten irritating. Shouldn’t the defenders of the home bl have quicker access to the lord’s room than the attackers? We just happened to catch the tail of the zerg as they were leaving in another direction, which again, we didn’t know how to get to even though we could see them.

How, how?! Did Anet manage to make me feel claustrophobic in so much wasted space? Seriously, what the kitten?!
edit: In regards to the original post… I don’t see havok/roaming dying on the new bl; I see it thriving. There will be so many people so hopelessly lost for a long time. Sounds like easy prey to me.

Here’s what I understand this reset change to mean.

So, basically, moving to a Saturday reset will eliminate population, multitudes, etc of players from deciding the score for the week in the first 24hrs?

The heart, core, quintessence, etc. of Guild Wars 2 (guilds, friends, server, community, etc.) reset night has been … ? … I don’t know; I’m at a loss for words there, …ruined, redefined, shaken?

Ha! The irony of the title, Heart of Thorns…

The very few Friday night resets I have been able to play have always been, kitten many have previously stated, THE most fun time of the entire week in WvW. I completely agree with that from my limited personal experience. I have even less of a chance to play a reset on Saturday. So, ANET, thanks for not doing anything about the guardian exploit being abused in WvW to melt gates in about 3 seconds. No, really, just let entire servers steam roll through everything… no penalty, nothing, just ignore it it’s only Wednesday, maybe somebody will look into it next week, ehh?

I’ve only been playing WvW regularly for a couple months now, but I know what I don’t love about it and I know what I do love about it. I absolutely DO NOT love being outnumbered 10:1 in WvW because the “server” has X number of people on it yet only 1/1000th of X on the “server” actually play WvW.

I remember group pvp… FA, JQ, AB… (faction from GW1) well, vaguely remember, anyways, I do remember there was a timer for the match to start, a timer that ran out and ended the match, and most importantly, someone correct me if I’m wrong here… the match didn’t start (it actually restarted the match countdown timer) until both sides had their full groups ready? Could this logic be applied in some way to help fix this WvW population mess?

One other important thing to note… when one side was winning, the map shifted to favor the losing side (Borderland?) where they had the upperhand, and when things were even, there was a middle map (EBG?)

So, does this lead us to the question… Is it really a matter of population imbalance or is it really about an unfair advantage?
