It is what it is, if you don’t like it, there are other games.
And what happens to ANet’s precious revenue stream if enough people do go off to other games?
History is littered with the corpses of companies that didn’t take good enough care of their existing customer base, thinking they could always bring in new customers.

Rebates. Discounts. Sales. Bundles… Unless you spent most of your life in a cave, these happen all the time. It’s not going to change because you feel it’s unfair.
Expect paying a higher price if you want to be amongst the first to own a product. Other option is for you to wait for the product to go on sale.
Im not sympathizing with Anet either because how they packaged, promoted and priced the expansion was terribly amateurish. It’s like something a start-up with inexperienced founders would do. Not a 10+ year old company backed by a larger company.
On the other hand, the comments some of you posted were ridiculous. I know a lot of people have quit playing the game out of boredom or other reasons. Fair enough.
Yet a bunch have admitted to enjoying the game, have spent thousands of hours on it so far but will deny/reject themselves from enjoying it further because it costs $20 more than they’re willing to pay for…even if they were really looking forward to it.
$50 expansion may seem expensive to some but it’s still very reasonable.
Why does it bother “veterans” that new customers get the base for free? If you’re a so called veteran, you had a 3 year head start. You experienced content that’s now retired, content that will never be enjoyed by the new buyer.
Reading the comments on here, I won’t be surprised if you fail to see it from that perspective.
Yeah, if you feel you’re getting a raw deal, don’t exercise your right to speak about it, just stay quiet and take it or leave it. But by all means don’t disturb the fanbois.

Almost a week later and there’s still no official response. Or should we consider this one as legit?
https://youtu.be/KZspKoupWAY
A week and 100 forum pages later…
ANet, you’re not doing yourself any favors stretching this out. Quite the opposite, in fact.
Lol, I love posts that start with “my wife and I” or “my husband and I” – who the kitten cares that you’re married.
Well, here’s the thing… generally, there’s only one active poster in a household, if that. I’d say they basically say ‘this is 2 people playing this game who have this same opinion’.
Yeah of course. But where I came from fathers didn’t play games and especially not their wives. Those are the people who casualize the game community since the huge commercial success of games. Where are the days of pizza eating nerds playing games? Ah, I miss those times… (not so serious)
Lol. Well, I started out gaming with the original Pong and Space Invaders. The first computer I owned was a Commodore 64. Hubby’s the same. Old gamers don’t STOP gaming, they just eat less pizza and keep healthier times. And they tend to marry one another, because let’s face it, no one else could survive our crazy habits.
I need to find me a girl like that. And I started with a VIC-20 and then graduated to the 64.
We’re out there. I’ve got 6 married couples in my guild, some with kids. The future of the breed is assured! (and yes, the kids do tend to pick it up young)
I know, my guild is run by a married couple. Though the hubby tends to play World of Tanks more than GW2.

Follow your own advice. Buy it or don’t buy it, but don’t try to tell us what to do or not to do.
I didnt
Uh, actually, you did.
If you can’t see that, or don’t think we can see that, then maybe Pirate101 is more your MMO speed.
The funny thing is, this was really just a joke because you can get the 4k gems worth of value from daily log in bonuses from two accounts rather quickly, have 5 more slots, and the storage that comes with a second account. Way more value than the ultimate edition. I almost bought the ultimate but if I do anything I might just go this route. It’s not like all of the things that come with the deluxe can’t be bought for gems anyway.
That’s why I specified that ANet would have to make it so we didn’t have the hassle of two logins.

The people complaining on forum, I can guarantee you most of them will but HoT they second they hear people talking about it after release. This is what happens every times.
They wont buy HOT because they dont have money. If you cant afford something you wont buy it. Its simple. People who have money dont give a kitten about the price.
I am probably earning more money than your whole family kiddo. But it doesn’t make me kim kardashian that throws money every single, overpriced, idiotic stuff unlike you.
If true, you’re extremely wealthy and complaining about 10 bucks. From a company that has given you a mmo for 3 years with no monthly payments or pay 2 win features. You’re that wealthy and you fail to see the value in HoT?
A wealthy person typically gets wealthy by not wasting money.
Follow your own advice. Buy it or don’t buy it, but don’t try to tell us what to do or not to do.
It actually could be illegal. What Anet did in regards to promoting HoT needing GW2 as a prereq, then changing at the last minute could be considered bait and switch. Or manipulative marketing/business practices. Everything else people seem to be arguing is perception and sense of value.
Don’t bother arguing with Straylight. He’s an ANet fanboi right down to his socks with Mordremoth on them. No matter what they do, he’ll say they’re right to do it.
Sorry, doesn’t wash.
Here’s a real-world example. I’m very fond of the game The Sims. I’ve had every version since the original, and every expansion for said games (though I have skipped some of the “stuff packs”).
Every, and I mean every expansion for all those games has been released as a standalone that people didn’t get the base game free with. After a few months released as a standalone, some of the expansions (but not all) would be bundled with the base game as a way for new players to get in, but as I just said, that’s after they’d been out as a standalone for a while.
ANet’s problem is that they’re not letting us get the expansion separately, they’re going right to the bundle phase.
So Anet offers a better deal then the sims, in a game that requires a health player base. Yet that’s some how a bad thing?
They are offering a better deal to new players. They are not offering an equivalent deal to existing players.
Therein lies the rub.
I hope they’ll add skritts as a playable race someday :P
+10^100 !!!!!!!
Many of us likely won’t be around to see it, with ANet kittening us the way they are now.
Besides, the way ANet is doing things at the moment, they’ll promise you a new race for years and then not deliver.
That would, indeed, bring the value received closer to the price asked. The caveat is, of course, that ANet would have to make it as painless as possible for veterans to receive these benefits, and not have to hassle with things like a second username and password.
We’re only 3 here, got all hyped about HoT, then Pre-purchase offer came. Slap in the face from ANet (just for condoning NC’s greed to that extent). 2 of us opted out instantaneously, 3rd followed shortly.
You don’t do magic tricks with the official information. You don’t sell apples as oranges. And you don’t talk fish when the forum’s in an uproar for 7+ days. So, as far as ANet and their tradition of caring about their fans is nowhere to be felt, I’m not forking over a dime to NC. That which just happened is abusing customer’s trust and naivity: “Hey! if you spend cash on our mini rocks with game still buggy, take this reworked GW2 and imagine it’s an expansion…”
I’m already composing how I’m gonna tell my guild I’m leaving the game for good. I’ll also resign from the guild cause mine is constantly coming up against the max player limit and they can use the open slot for someone who’s more willing to put up with ANet’s shenanigans.
I have noticed that they ignore every post, but as a known company that been here always for the customers and not to be rude or something, I am expecting an answer for that as we all deserve to know
They don’t ignore very post. They’ve actually responded to the best of their ability (basically, “we acknowledge your complaints and cannot say any more than that”). ANet typically doesn’t readily respond to most topics beyond this type of answer until months down the line.
If they let this go on for months a number of veterans — like myself — will just up and leave.
I think new players are still on the lower end of the deal though. There’s a lot they have missed out as wel as needing to pay for things that were free otherwise. Gem conversion used to be really low. I think I bought most my characterslots for like 2 gold early on for example.
If I start a new game right now, like say Eve Online (one I’ve been considering), I will also miss out on a lot of things that the other players already have.
Guess what? That’s life. It happens when you start a new job, start a new school, move to a new town, start going to a new church, the list goes on and on and on.
And no, that’s no reason to give benefits to new people that make the existing people feel like they’re being slighted. You don’t give a freshman in college something that the people who’ve been there for years have had to pay for, do ya?
It’s not a bad solution, but I doubt the bookahs at ANet will do it. They don’t seem to have the sense to see a reasonable solution when it’s offered.
Actually there is going to be a new race. They’re called the Avwhe, rumor has it that stands for Angry Vets Who’ve Had Enough.
Good luck trying to see one, though. They have a special racial skill of quantum-shift invisibility. It will be as if they’re not even there.
Brilliant!

This is good to remember. People that say they know the majority of players are angry/quitting the game/not ever going to buy HoT are simply exaggerating.
Exaggerate no more. I am gone from GW2 and may very well not return. Arenanet has done a real disservice to this long standing player who was part of this franchise going way back to GW1.
Out of here,
If they don’t address these problems soon, and satisfactorily, I’ll probably be joining you.[/quote]

strangely enough, i’m feeling it for both sides, i’m trying to see anets side too in the challenges they face with today’s market and having to please investors, that can be pressure.
I’m just trying to find the point in time when they stopped trusting us to just buy stuff and support them, and instead thought more about marketing and statistics ?
where exactly in time did we stop being friends ?
There probably wasn’t any single moment in time, it was likely an attitude that grew on them over time.

Asking on map chat is useless in any case. Most people there won’t be angry, happy, or indifferent, they’ll be oblivious, wondering what the hell you’re talking about.
Or they’ll be busy doing whatever they’re doing and pretty much ignoring chat.

There are hundreds of thousands of GW2 players you never hear of. They never post on the forum. They never complain and they never voice their opinion.
This is good to remember. People that say they know the majority of players are angry/quitting the game/not ever going to buy HoT are simply exaggerating.
So are those that say the majority will eventually buy HoT.
Fact is, we really don’t know yet. So both extremes are wrong in this case.

But the local minority who’s unhappy with this preorder deal is unhappy for all the wrong reasons and I want them to be happy. I actually want to help them. Also it can’t be said enough: if you’re not happy with the preorder, just don’t preorder. Wait until the game releases, watch some reviews, ask a friend who bought it etc.. People here act like Arenanet is holding a gun to their heads saying “Preorder or die”.
I’m not picking fights. I’m simply voicing my opinion like everyone else. I’m just one person with one opinion. Nothing more.
If you really want to help us and make us happy, quit lecturing us with your finger wagging in our face saying “you’re wrong you’re wrong you’re wrong!”

But there are also a lot of players that are just as unhappy and not posting about it.
That is true. There are unhappy people out there who can’t/don’t want to post. But it’s more likely that they will complain opposed to unhappy or indifferent people who never complain. Therefore the people you see complaining on the forums are a fraction of an already small fraction. Therefore they must be in the minority.
Even if it’s true why does it matter? why are you arguing with the players here?
The point of this topic is some players were unhappy with the whole pre-order deal for various reasons they are posting here to express them. Since you’re apparently happy with the deal it doesn’t negatively effect you the only outcomes that can occur are:
1. Anet changes something to give a better deal, in which case this is a boon to you.
2. Anet does nothing, in which case since you’re already happy it doesen’t effect you.The only outcome is a potential positive change for you, so why pick fights with the people here for no reason? Their reasons are their own nothing you say will change that doesn’t matter if you don’t agree or think their reasons are false.
This. Right here.

1) The majority of players do not post on the forums. That’s a fact.
2) That majority of non-forumgoers can either feel happy, indifferent or unhappy about the game.
3) It’s far more likely that the happy and indifferent players combined are a bigger portion than the unhappy players. Why? because if it was the other way around we would suddenly have a majority of players complaining on the forums since unhappy people are the only ones who complain…and that would interfere with sentence 1).
4) Therefore we can deduce that the complainers are in the minority. As you can see we don’t need numbers to prove that. All it needs is logic and some common sense.
Also it doesn’t matter if you understand this or not (though I hope you will). All that matters is that Arenanet understands it.I think before the announcement I’d posted less than a half a dozen times on the forums.
Since the announcement I’ve posted quite a few more, and have not been in-game except for a few minutes to gauge my guild’s reaction to it (it wasn’t “I can’t wait to spend $50 on this expansion!” for the record).
I just proved your logic incorrect.
What? no you didn’t.
The only thing you proved is that you’re an unhappy person who found his way to the forums to complain.
Also you’re still one person no matter how often you post on the forums.
You’re still in the minority.
edit: I’m not saying your complaints are invalid. Just saying that the complainers who post on the forum do not represent the majority. They represent the vocal minority.
You cannot prove that we don’t represent the majority that don’t speak up. You might want desperately to believe it, but you can’t prove it.
And licking ANet’s shoes won’t get you your Legendary any quicker.
No, in fact you’re the one who desperately wants to believe he represents the majority. You belong to the vocal minority. Nothing more, nothing less. That doesn’t make your complaints invalid by the way.
Heh. “I know you are but what am I?” was old when I was in the third grade.

Ummmm….what? This is the strangest logic I’ve heard yet. I did a very informal poll in all the main cities today, and found only 14% (7 of 52) have or will purchase if nothing changes. The others – and the five people in my household – are waiting for resolution. Again, not scientific, but to say those who are unhappy are the minority is not a slam-dunk conclusion.
You forget all the players in the main cities who didn’t respond to your little poll there. It’s safe to assume they’re indifferent about this subject.
No it isn’t safe to assume they are indifferent. Not everyone will respond even if they feel strongly on something because of a myriad of reasons, including being afk lol
But it’s more likey that they’re indifferent about a particular change when they don’t respond to a poll. If it bothered them so much they would respond.
Okay, we know you’re an ANet fanboy now. Tell ya what, if they give everyone that complains a free slot but not those that don’t, will you still go “rah rah” about that?

As amount of people kittening about Arena’s kittened up pricing policy is definitely greater than of those who preach to “Stay calm and just pay up”.
When I was learning customer service (back in the days before the internet, if you young pups can imagine such a world), we had a saying:
Each happy customer tells 1 other person.
Each unhappy customer tells 10 other people.Except in this situation if those 10 other people are new players, they get a fantastic deal -_-
No one I’ve told about this has said, “I gotta rush out and get this!”
In fact, the reaction has been a universal “Wow, that’s a really lousy deal for the existing players.”

they still waiting for sale report
No word from Anet yet?
If I were them I’d also look at the number of long-time players that haven’t spent more than an hour in-game since this announcement, as well as the number of those same long-time players that haven’t bought gems since the announcement.
I feel like you don’t understand how not shafting your existing customer base works. And we don’t need to wait for them to do something wrong in the future, they’ve already done it.
Done it more than once, IMHO.
Every expansion with Sims required the base game to play. Always. Who knows what will happen with GW2 with the next xpac. Will it require only the base game, or will it require HoT as well as base game?
If you are going to compare apples and oranges, please be at least equal in comparing them.
Exactly my point. They required the base game, but they didn’t include the base game. That’s what “standalone” means.
re: for some reason the forums are replacing the first ‘$5 beer’ with ‘kitten beer’ – I think it’s replacing “a five dollar beer” with “kitten beer” because of what the letter “a” followed by two characters that somewhat resemble “s” (kinda) spells. It’s a workaround way to write swear words. I use an “_” to separate letters/words/etc… when the swear filter changes them: a _ 5$ beer
Gotta love automatic filtering.

Why not make a $25.00 version so that ppl who own GW2 do not have the buy it again just to get the expansion?
Just asking.
That’s what they should have done in the first place.
That’s what they should do now.
But I must admit I have my doubts they will.
Sorry, doesn’t wash.

ANet’s problem is that they’re not letting us get the expansion separately, they’re going right to the bundle phase.
Didn’t they address that in one of the livestreams? I thought they said those without HoT would access any guild amenities available through the new building in Lion’s Arch, the Guild Initiative.
That’s not my question. The Guild Hall will serve as a meeting place for guild missions, and as I am part of a large guild, that’s critical. If those of us — like me — who don’t buy HoT can’t access the Guild Hall itself, we’re definitely at a disadvantage.
Some people have decided that others are getting more value than them for the same price. To these people this is a legitimate problem and may stop some of them playing.
I enjoy populated games. I personally support the addition of the core game free in the pack , to increase player numbers. I would also support those who own the game being given some sort of alternate value.
It’s already pretty much stopped me playing, at least till this is ironed out.
If this keeps up, they’ll really be desperate for new players, cause many of their vets will just uninstall and go play another game.

I still think 50 dollars is fine given the assumption that it would include 1-2 years of free content in the future.
But I will say that as of now, I am not going to buy HoT. Not because of the price, but because nothing that we have seen so far has made me particularly excited. Nothing has made me say “I cant wait til this comes out!” …
Right now I’m more excited about Elder Scrolls 6,,, and I don’t even know if that’s in development yet. But given what we have been told so far about HoT, I am very much underwhelmed.
I agree with the sentiment, but I’m excited about a different game’s expansion.
Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) just announced that they’re going to offer another expansion to their game. It looks highly interesting, and even though we don’t have many details yet, we have one crucial one: a release date.
Ironically, it was while playing SWTOR that I first heard about GW2.

This is already diving down, there are way less people complaining than a few days ago. Also here is a fact , majority of players are happy with pre purchase. I’m not talking about people on forum, I’m talking about people in game. Just go in game and ask at lion arch or any other major hubs. The majority of response I got are positive. People who are unhappy with the situation are more likely to go on forum and complain.
There’s another, equally plausible, explanation.
The people who are mad, like me, are simply not playing until this is resolved to our satisfaction.
Thus, you don’t see the angry people in map chat. See how simple that is?
In short, you cannot use only those people still playing at any given moment as a sample for your own little straw poll, at least not if you want the poll to have any validity.
Here’s another way to look at it.
You go to the pub and order kitten beer.
10min later they run a special, $2 for a beer.
Are you mad? No you buy another beer or keep drinking what you have.
They announce a celebration deal that if you bought a beer that day you can also get a burger for $5.
The kitchen opens and the pub starts selling $5 burgers with a free beer instead.
Someone walks in and buys a burger and gets a beer.
You walk up and order a burger, but you don’t get a beer because you already bought one that day.
Are you mad?
A very good way of putting it, sir. I only regret I only have one +1 to give to it.
As I said, my concerns are not new players getting the game for cheap, or in this case, free. My concern is arena net catering to new players while leaving the veterans out. I support bringing in new players. I don’t support leaving your loyall customers in the dark
As I just posted on another thread, this reminds me of when they redid the progression of new characters in the early levels. The reason I heard — which I freely admit might have been wrong, but it fits perfectly with the changes made — was that they were doing it to make it easier for new players. In other words, nerfing vets to make newbies happy.
Now here they are doing it again. Is it any wonder many vets — I said many, not all vets, so kindly don’t come around here accusing me of putting words in your mouth — are up in arms about the repeated overvaluing of new players and undervaluing of veteran players?
