The team is keenly aware of this situation, and top people are working on it!

One of the IT guys at my work (a hospital lab) had an idea for a solution to a malfunctioning computer that I’ve wanted to try since he suggested it.

He said he was gonna tie the computer to the back of his pickup, drag it to the top of the tallest hill in the area, and kick it off said hill.

My response was, can I be behind you in my car, filming it? We’d get a million hits on YouTube!

Pass that suggestion along to your IT folks.

I hate to tell you, but any other MMO you jump on to will likely be even more aggressive on pricing. for all the freakouts, GW2 is still the best deal on the market in terms of what you get for the money.

Being the best doesn’t mean that you can get away with crap like that.

It does in Ohoni’s world.

It does if you have a functional understanding , that creating something cost money and manpower

It also helps if you have a functional understanding that kittening off your existing userbase does nothing to keep the money flowing in. In fact, it often has the opposite effect.

HoT discount for veteran players?

Personally i think the solution is rather easy: give existing players the option to convert their extra game copy into gems or to gift it.

since the game is apparently kitten value, allow players the chance to turn it into $50 of gems. (have this done by an in-game npc to prevent people buying it for the first time from accidentally turning their game into currency they can’t use) so that this way you’re either: A – buying HoT and you get 4000 gems free, or B – You’re Buying $50 of gems and you are also getting HoT free. either way this is a good solution. you have the means to get a character slot in addition to anything else you’d like, and people who already have another character slot wont get jipped. (since the base game is apparently ‘free with purchase’ it won’t hurt Anets profits in any way) and this also makes Ultimate more appealing given the $100 in-game value, HoT + Swag

the one down side would be a rather immediate economy crash if people decide to convert gems to gold, but meh. Anets dealt with in-game economy emergencies before.

The effects to the economy could be smoothed a little if they said you can only spend X amount of the “HoT” gems in a given time period, like a day. Spread it out over a few weeks or so.

It’s not a bundle because there’s no option to separate the two. Neither piece has its own individual price, and on top of that, the vast majority of people who would want to pre-order, people who already own the base game, only get the “free” base game if they start a brand new account, and apply the expansion to that account.

And if you do that, start a brand new account, you’re not buying an expansion. You’re buying GW2 v2.0, which happens to have new features collectively knows as “Heart of Thorns”.

People want an expansion, which means a product that “expands” their existing account, and get as good a deal as people buying GW2 v2.0.

That’s gotta be the best way of explaining it that I’ve seen since the announcement.

Back on topic, I don’t want to be too kitten the Devs here as I’m SURE many of them would like to respond on this issue (tho I’m not sure how they would do so or what they could say to defend it), but also want to keep their job.

I’m quite confident this was a (horrible, IMO) decision made way up the food chain and those Anet employees that truly care about this game have been gagged.

Very true, but that says a lot about the company as a whole, doesn’t _ it? Sure doesn’t sound like the kind of business I wanna support with my hard-earned dollars (or pesos or euros or whatever).

Edit: Silly thing put a kitten in my post where I didn’t want it!

Lets not forget the network effect of having new players. There is value in a large player base that benefits players. If you consider the fact that the free core game is in order to facilite new players, it is a kind of win-win. That being said, I am quite surprized that the expansion doesn’t by default give a few, not just one, character slots. Not very good IMO.

If they really wanted to expand their player base, why not let veterans have free core game copies, too? As a veteran, I would happily hand off my “free” copy of the core game to a friend who was considering the game.

As it stands, however, I would tell him either to wait and see how this issue shakes out, or to look for another game.

“Dust in the wind… all we are is dust in the wind…”

Not sure how many here are old enough to remember that song, tho.

Plenty of us, I think. Also, I appreciate your voice of reason here and your ability to make your points in clearly legible text. Thank you.

I can think of at least three people I could hand off a free copy of the base game to without even having to think very hard. If they want new players, they shouldn’t kitten off the best advertisers they have… existing players!

And I thank you for your kind words.

With the recent announcement that they are reversing their decision on unlock traits/skills I have a renewed faith in Anet. I know they rarely talk to us, but I do believe they hear us when we completely dominate the forums with an issue.

I think they will announce that veterans get a character slot for the 50$ game, and new players get the base game. That would make a LOT of people pretty happy. I think Anet is slow, but I do think they will make this better.

Either that, or they’re throwing us a bone on traits because they won’t give us anything on HoT.

The trait revamp has been planned for months.

Exactly. Throwing us a bone now, hoping we’ll believe they’ll give us one on HoT. And then they won’t.

I really do not trust ANet to do the right thing anymore. I did, once. No longer.

The only forum post by anet staff has been an unidentified moderator, closing a thread that was asking for answers. Yeah, they care.

But you’re not allowed to say that they don’t care, lest some White Knight call you a liar.

Not even a “sorry”, a stick post saying what they are looking into, just some random reply that people may or may not see.
Yeah, this speaks volumes for what kind of company Anet is.

I had my fun with GW2, despite the bugs or the stupid AI, or the forgotten dungeons and their exploits shared freely.

Guess I’ll choose a starter map and donate my gold to a random new player. At least they had a good deal and it will take time for them to be kittened over. hahaha.

If I choose to leave permanently (which is becoming more likely as time goes on), I’ll probably just stick my gold in the guild bank. I trust my guild leaders to use it wisely.

actually silence is powerful …it can be damaging or positive depending on how the pr guy uses it.

it could either be ……we are not budging …..or we were shocked and were busy beheading the marketing guy.

In this case it’s damaging because we’re already seeing people leaving the game on account of it.

If they come back and claim they beheaded the marketing guy, those people who’ve already left won’t see it cause, well, they’ve already left.

Their veteran customer base is getting smaller with every tick of the clock.

So 5 months now we dont have a Update the Veterans dont leave the game .
But now when they released the price ppl leave the game ?

Thanks for opening my eyes :P

They can leave and they can come back … they dont pay sub …..they already moved and come back with variuous games …

Edit: I simply call them traitors , because in the past they admitted hat they will leave GW2 for an other game that offers Arenas + Raids (and generally that the Devs listen to them) and now once more they say that will go back when the game goes F2P.
So the old veteran-royal playerbase mostly is a hoax rumor :P

Actually a lot people has left because of no new updates, PvP balance and other stuff, bringing them back with a 50 dollar tag will be really hard.

I was referring to the people I’ve seen here in the forums saying, essentially, “that’s it, I’m gone.”

being that this is a “hot” topic, i think it wise of them to take a moment to think of a proper reply.

True, because right now, even one wrong Word or just mispelling one thing can make this entire Rage Explode into a Nuke strong enough to Destroy all of Tyria. Anet needs to be very careful of what they say.

Better to take some time ( especially after the E3 ) than just trow around a Post that could make the entire Situation even worse.

The problem is, silence is also damaging.

But around page 60 they said they will keep out opinions and suggestions in mind. We’ll see. All we can do is wait.

Yeah, I agree. That’s all we can do.

However, as ArenaNet have repeatedly proven themselves to be terrible at communicating real information, I won’t wait long.

Yeah, this is my issue. ANet honestly seems to try to “get away with” a lot of stuff and only backtrack once HUGE outrage is expressed, and then only sometimes. No trust here. None at all. You’ll be waiting a long time, my friend. I’ve seen them spew out platitudes like “we’re looking into it” over and over with not much resulting action.

Speaking only for myself, my patience with ANet is rapidly evaporating.

And our various white knights here aren’t slowing said evaporation at all.

101 pages of people discussing the multiple issues surrounding the pre-order deal.
Multiple other threads, and yet Anet silence remains.

If a company can’t come up with an official statement after a week, I guess it’s time to pack and move to another game. Sad, I really loved this one.

You do realize that the Anet official statement is already in the thread, posted 5 days ago? Expansion is $50, period. Its the answer to the thread. Just because people dont like it or choose to ignore it doesnt make it any less of an official statement. What came after is as you said, 101 pages of people discussing stuff.

So, you’re saying the official statement is, “we’re not changing anything, kitten off everyone who doesn’t like it”?

pretty much yes… and let’s be honest here, that’s what’s hapenning right now. that’s the reason there’s no other response to this thread. they might reconsinder their position in time if they don’t reach their financial goals or the game starts to suffer due to bad press. otherwise it’s safe to say that they’re pretty much done. that’s why they lump here every semi negative thread and they flat out delete others. they don’t want our “negative” vibes or something affecting the forums and such…

That sure seems to be the case. As I said on another thread (that’ll probably be merged here), ANet just doesn’t care about their existing customers.

See? You’re getting added value for being an existing player at the time of the changeover.

But we’re whining because we’re asking for what you’re already getting.

Yes,. but that’s because I’d paid for a lifetime subscription, that’s what was promised to me and they were totally changing the terms. Players who were just regular subscribers got nothing special out of the deal even though they’d put in monthly subs up to that point. Likewise here, when you bought GW2 ANet never promised you anything other than that you would get to play GW2, and you can, so their job is done. They do not owe you anything more.

And I bought a lifetime subscription to GW2. But now they’re adding areas to the game that I cannot access without paying them more. In short, I no longer have a lifetime subscription to all of GW2.

I spent $60 on something the newbies are getting free. If you think that’s fair, you go right on supporting ANet as they keep kittening you.

You also spent $60 on something that new players could get for $50 a year or so later, and for $10 a year after that. Videogames depreciate, often fast. It’s preposterous to expect otherwise. Every player that buys Fallout 4 for XBone in the fall will be getting Fallout 3 for free, that doesn’t mean that people who bought Fallout 3 for full price have reason to be salty about it. They got the game they paid for and had years to play it before these new players are getting it, Bethesda owes them nothing more than that.

If ANet asking a fair market price for a great product is them kittening me, then that’s how daddy likes getting kittened.

When GW2 came out, did it include GW1 for free?

No, cause GW2 is not a GW 1 expansion. But if you buy the base WoW package and the current expansion you get EVERY SINGLE OTHER EXPANSION for free. That’s a lot of money you’d have spent if you’d been around buying expansions the whole time.

Then why bring up Fallout 4/Fallout 3?

Short answer, your example just fell apart.

Sorry I compare MMORPGs to MMORPGs, because, get this, they’re basically the same genre. I don’t compare single player games to MMORPGs, because they have completely different logistics.

Short answer, you’re terrible at examples.

See, and I tried comparing MMORPGs to MMORPGs when I asked about GW1/GW2.

At $25 for the base price, both accounts would have been a sure thing from me, once a date was announced. I’d probably even have considered $35 a fair enough price for my main account to get it. But given what last year was like, and what this year has been like thus far (content-wise and “communication”), I’m simply going to wait and see what reviewers have to say, and for the price to fall.

I agree except for one thing. I’m going to wait for a while to see what ANet says/does. If it’s “nothing” long enough, I’ll just decide that they don’t really value their existing customer base and move on to another game.

If they do start saying something, then I’ll consider what they say before making a final decision.

Just about any other MMO you’d have bought you’d be in far far worse shape in the same type of comparison. Think of people who paid for a year of $15 monthly fees and suddenly everyone was playing the game with no monthly fee. Or the people who paid for games that went free to play, including paying sub. Or all the WoW players who bought ever expansion all along, where a new player saves a couple of hundred dollars.

Or people,
<-
who bought a lifetime subscription to DCUO, only to have the game go F2P in, what, six months or so? Still, I am at least getting a monthly stipend in Sony funbucks out of them, no clue what to spend it on.

When GW2 came out, did it include GW1 for free?

why do u even argue if u do not want to understand why veterans and others are upset? u like the deal ok thats fine and im glad u like it, but me and others arent.
i get that u are happy, but u cant change how we who are upset feel:

to ALL u white knights out there:

1. u cannot change how i feel about this deal
2. yes i have played the game for 3 years and so has my husband. and we invested way more than the initial price on this game and have always supported this game. so the argument about: well u had the game for free, now new players get it for free whats your issue? well u obviously dont want to understand the issue!

3 u can not force me to be quiet

4 u cant expect everyone to shut up and just accept things

5. as i have an opinion about the pricing, so do u. difference: im not trying to force my opinion on u. u wanna buy it at 50$ thats fine, enjoy! but i personally wont shut up, because i am unhappy and u cannot change this at all.

6. u are not anet and honestly, the only one who can change the way we who are upset feel is ANET and only ANET. white knights that call us names just make us even more upset.

THIS! So very much this!

You all talk about leaving, not buying HoT, yet you are all still here. Not leaving. Each of you has the power within yourselves to determine your own reality, to welcome into it happiness or discomfort. You have chosen discomfort. You have chosen to be angry, you have chosen to feel cheated, you have chosen to lament these percived injustices.

Yes, I really wish they would get going already and spare us the melodrama. Fish or cut bait already.

Gee, here we’re being generous and giving ANet a chance to fix their kitten-up, and you’re complaining that we’re doing so?

This is B2P!

They are offering a better deal to new players. They are not offering an equivalent deal to existing players.

Therein lies the rub.

Yes they are. Existing players are getting the core game for free. They just already have it, so they aren’t going to really notice any difference. What you mean to say is that existing players are not being offered bonus candy on top of what the new players are being offered, which is true, nor do we deserve it.

I spent $60 on something the newbies are getting free. If you think that’s fair, you go right on supporting ANet as they keep kittening you.

You might be right if this wasn’t more or less standard for MMOs. But since it is, maybe there’s, I don’t know, a reason for it?

Maybe because GW2 was supposed to be something different from the “standard MMO”?

How about free bag slots with purchase?

Agreed, the gem idea was a really good one, they should have simply done it across all 3 tiers.
It solves a lot of complaints.

Since it’s a good idea, you can be sure ANet won’t do it.

This is B2P!

Its upsetting to see that all of the negative feedbacks is getting corralled into this one thread….. but what is even more disappointing is that…
There are so many topics that aren’t even being merged with this thread…. and instead are getting outright deleted. Topics where players are committing negatively to the HoT expansion, but are remaining completely civil and logical and making valid points and arguments. Usually when a thread is deleted we get a message notification in our inbox, but these threads are simply being erased.

We are being censored.

Given ANet’s past actions, this is hardly surprising.

Ladies and gentlemen, these are the signs of a company on the defensive, and about to go under if enough of their existing customer base say “bye-bye.”

Is it really that bad for the Vets?

No one is forcing anyone to buy the game… if it is “too expensive”, don’t buy it. It is literally as simple as that.

Many of us aren’t.

But that doesn’t mean that we can’t bring our concerns to the attention of the management, does it?

We’ve got bugged events that have to be forcibly reset for over 2 years without any kind of response to bug reports.

And you expect Anet to answer as fast as 7 days after they kittened up? Good luck.

Don’t destroy our hopes just yet One can dream, right?

Yeah, if you feel you’re getting a raw deal, don’t exercise your right to speak about it, just stay quiet and take it or leave it. But by all means don’t disturb the fanbois.

At no point did they say not to complain about it, just that, in their opinion, the complaints are somewhat out of hand. Speak out if you feel like it, but it really has gotten to some ridiculous levels (like trying to file a class-action lawsuit? really?). Anet owes us more communication, clarification, and possibly apologies too, but this forum has been almost literally nothing but repeat threads about the expansion price.

Someone always files a class-action lawsuit or threatens to, it’s just the USA for you!

This forum isn’t just about that, but you’ll notice the majority of smaller threads are actually people like this guy, complaining about the complaining – you don’t get to whine about forum littering whilst doing that.

But their kind of forum litter is acceptable, whereas anyone else’s isn’t!

Almost a week later and there’s still no official response. Or should we consider this one as legit? https://youtu.be/KZspKoupWAY

A week and 100 forum pages later…

ANet, you’re not doing yourself any favors stretching this out. Quite the opposite, in fact.

We’ve got bugged events that have to be forcibly reset for over 2 years without any kind of response to bug reports.

And you expect Anet to answer as fast as 7 days after they kittened up? Good luck.

More reason not to continue to support them, IMHO.
