Hero Points & old characters: breach of trust

I haven’t been able to find any of this information. Where does it say everything will be reset and that we’ll have to re-unlock all our skills/traits?

Sorry to be that person, but does anyone have a link to where someone from ANet said you will only have 400 points to spend, and how that wont be enough to unlock everything even if you’ve done so previously?

https://www.guildwars2.com/en/news/ready-up-core-specializations-summary/

And yes, people have interpreted some of the information differently, but general consensus seems to be that it reads we will have our traits and skills wiped when this system goes live, and be rewarded hero points for the levels and skill challenges completed by each character. Excess skillpoints beyond the number of completed hero (skill) challenges completed will become a crafting material.

All this time you’ve spent reading/argueing in this thread could have been used to get those skill challenges.

Nah. I only read and reply when I can’t be in game.

I would like to point out that in the time since this thread started every person in it could have obtained 50% world completion by just playing 1 hour per day. This is almost triple of what will be needed to get full unlock status in the expansion, i.e. three characters worth of unlocks.

I’d would like to point out that they shouldn’t have to.

An hour a day running around tagging skill challenges to unlock things we already earned is an hour not spent doing something in game we either enjoy more or give rewards we haven’t already earned.

I don’t blame ArenaNet. I blame people who want to play video games like a full time job. Nothing short of long grinds will satisfy them, and so developers cave.

You just have to decide.

1. Is Ascended worth it?
2. If not, does it bug you enough that I don’t want to play the game.

I landed on getting ascended jewelry and weapon on all my characters, and being satisfied with exotic armor. That suits my middle of the road (not uber casual, not hardcore) play style. Until another, shinier MMORPG comes along, I’m pretty much content there.

Character Slot for Heart of Thorns? [Merged]

First post in this merged thread: two months ago.

How hard is it for ANet to login to the forums, type out “yes” or “no” and be done with it? Letting forum warriors speculate on stuff like this for months on end is really foolish. Its also toxic to the community and is basically the company thumbing its collective nose at the players.

But, given the lack of rapidity in fixing bugs and glitches with each patch, not to mention that nearly three years in there are still release bugs and issues that were never resolved, I can’t say I’m very surprised.

Monetization choices seem to happen very late in their development process.

Gear change for traits and Anet's stance.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gibson.4036

Yeah but….no
Guild wars 2 is intended to be different than that. Anet said countless times that they want the “journey to be the goal” rather than grinding new stuff to be able to play the new content.

So the OP is totally right in this particular point.

And a large number of players insist on treating the game like any other MMO. So who can blame the devs for giving players what they want? Thus they introduce fractals, ascended gear, optional stuff to grind for, “raid” boss Tequatl, an expansion, gear reset… it wouldn’t surprise me if they change their minds and raise the level cap too.

Until recently, their stance was that they always intended to one day raise the level cap. And as we all know, nothing is off the table.

“really would not like delete a lvl 80/Buy character slots for a new revenant.”

Are we sure that the OP didn’t mean maxed out FREE slots?
Because I’m maxed out on free slots and I think it is ridiculous for a game that has no end game to not allow people to have at least one of every class included in the gosh darn game.

I’m not spending a penny for a new character slot if one is not included in the xpac. In fact, I’m not even going to buy the xpac if there isn’t one. (or if there isn’t any end game content included, but that’s a different story)

I think it is really, really, dumb when a game doesn’t give enough slots for 1 of ever character. If you have to weed people from their money that way, that’s the sign of a bad game.

You didn’t get the memo where the whole game is endgame, did you.

Kinda hard to see that in the game GW2 became. It made a lot more sense before Ascended gear, Fractals, and LS. Since launch, endgame looks more like traditional MMO endgame than a seamless whole with the leveling experience.

When enough people post in these forums about not liking something, it’s pretty much guaranteed someone will mistake thread volume for rage and contribute by telling people how pitiable the are for getting worked up about something so small and dismiss them as a insignificant, though vocal minority. This,of course, riles people up and becomes self fulfilling.

It’s about as reliable as new “we need mounts” threads and the “go back to WoW” responses they generate.

I’ve noticed an inverse correlation between developer participation and player harshness.

In threads where a developer shows up and joins the dialogue, the snark and rage simmers right down and people get more respectful (there are always stand out bad apples). You’ll see this in economic discussions with Mr. Smith, or the CDIs. Or when Gaile pops in for a little back and forth.

Just an observation.

The discussion turned a lot more aggressive after Jon posted. Just because people misunderstood a specific term they could have easily googled for.

Well, I did specify joining the dialogue, not dropping a single explanation post and shadowstepping out.

Actually Tequatle operates under real Tyrian physics. In Tyria earth is lighter than air while in the presence of a strong magical field and over water. As a result of their undeath the dragons are constantly in a strong magical field and also count as and contain a large quantity of earth. Since the undead dragons tend to operate almost exclusively around large concentrations of water their mass is negated by this physical property of Tyria.

Do you have a source to backup these claims? Or are you just inventing this as you go?

Maybe someone can convince the Priory to set up some of their glowy technomagical widgets that they like to scatter about Tyria to collect data so we can find out.

Not ignored. The answer seems to be it’s okay for a magic user to use a physical weapon to channel magic through, but it’s not okay for a physical fighter to thunk someone with a weapon designed to channel magic.

Again you miss the mace vs scepter argument which addresses this.

No, I didn’t miss it. I was trying to summarize what I got out of it. Melee vs. ranged autoattack, magic weapons can look like martial, but not the other way around. Went back to look at it again, and I’m not seeing anything different.

What exactly defines the line between a regular skin and a “joke” skin?

Are the pearl weapons joke, or non-joke skins?

See comment about greatswords if they were rescaled.

It’s far more than a scale issue. Look at that Pearl Broadsword. It’s not only ridiculously big, it’s a spatula. Rescale it more “realistically” and you don’t get a realistic sword, you just get a smaller spatula.

What’s a joke weapon? Ask yourself which weapons were made with whimsy or humor in mind and which ones were made with that not so humorous, but still pervasive attitude that they need to be carrying the biggest most flashy thing they can get their hands on. Think of the nuclear cannon, Big Bertha or the Tzar Bomba built during the cold war. For these people it’s all about the size and shine, and while watching this is somewhat humorous to me personally, I don’t think over sized weapons were all done with giggles in mind.

Your arguments come across as very circular to me. People point out ridiculous weapon designs, and you say we have to dismiss joke weapons. When asked how we know which ones are joke weapons, the answer seems to be the ones that are unrealistic.

Okay, so all the weapons in the game are realistic once you dismiss all the unrealistic ones. Does that argument demonstrate anything? At all?

For example, the Harry Potter stories (and the Harry Dresden ones, too, for that matter) invent a new sort of magic whenever the story requires it. Any consistency is either coincidental or a result of an amazing memory (or note taking ability) of the author (and their editors). On the other hand, Larry Niven goes out of his way in his Gil Hamilton (and Magic Goes Away) stories to provide all the science (or magic) needed to solve mysteries long before the end of each tale.

I’d say this is something completely different than trying to apply scientific principles to magical beings. It looks like you’re talking about whether a particular story remains internally consistent or not. Does it have rules it sticks with, or does it make stuff up to suit where the creator wants to take the plot?

Fairy tales, one of the roots of what we call fantasy, have rules, and stick with them. They’re just not the rules of science. A creature can be covered in eyes because it is a manifestation of its ability to perceive truth, and it doesn’t make any sense to point out that after the first half dozen or so, any other eyes are just redundant.

So, yeah. I wasn’t saying that fantasy means “make it up as you go along”. I’m saying that wings make things fly, because that’s what they are for. It doesn’t matter if the creature is too big for the physics, the wings wrongly placed on the body, or if the wings are way too small in proportion to the creature that uses them.

talking about NPCs, I find them in GW2 to be either too good or too bad. Nothing in between. That’s a shame because characters like this can make very interesting stories.

Huh.

Like King Adelbern? Or the Sylvari that turns to nightmare, not because he’s evil, but because his lover did? Or how Caithe ignored for far too long how vicious Faolain became?

I can't believe Tequatl can fly

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gibson.4036

Gibson.4036

Well yes, because here’s the thing. Those things are normal magic. But Tequatl actually has wings and actually flaps his wings to fly, so I assume that he’s using his wings to fly, not magic. I don’t see him summon a magic carpet to fly or a broomstick, he clearly uses his physical (in game) wings to fly. The wings would never work, you have to admit that.

Why do angels often float in the air with wings outstretched? It’s clear the wings aren’t supporting them.

Why do people with telekinesis often point at things as if they are lifting them with their hands?

For that matter, why do telepaths touch their temples?

Why are the Seraphim covered in eyes all over? What would be the purpose of that many eyes?

You’re trying to fit fantasy into a scientific mindset. It just doesn’t work. Look at it like a believing child. Flying things often have wings, because wings are for flying.

What does “high concept” even mean?

According to dictionary.com, high concept is a…

noun
1. a simple and often striking idea or premise, as of a story or film, that lends itself to easy promotion and marketing.

See also: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-concept

Example: ‘What if there was a world dominated by giant cave asura who ran around terrorizing people with their limited vocabularies and big clubs!’

Star Trek, for another example, was pitched to the TV guys as ‘Wagon Train to the stars!’, Wagon Train being a western TV show about a (wait for it) wagon train making its way from Missouri to California. So the ‘Wagon Train to the stars!’ was the high concept there.

Thanks, that’s not at all what I would have expected.

And doesn’t really seem to fit the Dragonhunter.

Other than the issue of having to generate a lot of new skins or having a limited variety of melee staff skins, making them two distinct weapon types also has an impact on loot tables, creating one more type and decreasing the chance of getting one your character can use. It also means designing and adding an additional new legendary.

Seems like the simplest approach, rather than making melee staves a completely separate weapon from caster staves, would be to introduce some plain melee staff skins for you.

My thought is that if it’s a distinct weapon, either ArenaNet has to get busy and make a ton of melee staff skins or restrict melee staff users to a very small range of visual options.

If they do a half dozen melee staff skins with the introduction of melee staff specializations, but keep them as the same weapon as caster staves, then every user can decide for herself whether she wants to thump people with a Bo or The Bifrost.

From before launch, ArenaNet stated they made a design choice that this was to be a “heroic” game. Players will be cast as heroes.

That doesn’t preclude them from playing with grey areas with NPCs, though. The seem to be doing a better job of that as time goes by. They also had us play through an NPC making a dark choice just recently, though that was controversial.
