We should all take a moment in game to make sure we do a bug report on this as well. That way it can go into their official bug tally, rather than be just another suggestion thread among hundreds of others.

It needs to stand out from “It’d be cool if we had a ninja monk vampire profession.”

Why blindness on mesmers is now unbalanced

Gibson.4036

Why does every class discussion have to come down to this? People who play the class pointing out that something’s not right, and people who don’t play the class saying it’s perfectly balanced?

Wish we could get real Dev feedback on this. For the time being my Mesmer is shelved. I know, I know. I should L2P, adapt, and run a clone shatter build so I can ignore the phantasms taking up 20% of my weapon slots.

I love the Mesmer so much, I probably will, eventually. I still hope they come up with a solution that gives us our phantasms back before then, though.

For me, it’s not even about Blind. It’s about random rocks in the terrain sending my phantasms on cooldown.

Agreed.

Even with some things I’d like changed or fixed, I continue to love this game. It’s the MMORPG I’ve been waiting for.

Above all, the biggest compliment I can give it is that after months of playing it I still experience moments of wonder and child-like glee.

Thanks for a great game. I look forward to getting through its growing pains, and have great hope that it will be even better as it reaches maturity.

Gibson.4036

It makes the most sense, from a game design standpoint, to have the monthly incentivise areas of the game that are not currently in fashion.

WvW and FotM are already focus areas for the population. There’s no point to giving extra rewards to things that people are already doing.

It would make more sense to use monthly rewards to give people a reason to do less populated content. As someone said above, monthly rewards should give people a reason to get back out into the open world.

I just recently learned this is why I get random target switches, and have since run into several people who hadn’t realized it until I told them.

This is a huge issue, and it would be appreciated if a developer could comment about it directly. If more people understood that this is what was causing screwy targeting I bet this thread would be much longer with people chiming in.

I have no idea why they nerfed city exploration experience, it was always a nice way to get slightly ahead of the starting zone and make things a little easier…./shrugs

Yes. My big thing was weapon swapping. Once you get used to it, it’s annoying being tied down to one weapon, even for just a few levels. I appreciated that I could unlock it before ever fighting anything after the tutorial.

I posted the same question a week or so ago. I don’t feel like I’m leveling any slower out in the world, but I did have interesting results on a new character I just recently rolled.

I cap all six cities right out of the tutorial area before doing anything else. I used to get to about midway through level 8 doing this.

On my most recent toon I only got midway through 5.

I was wondering if exploration XP got nerfed.

Thanks, OP. I agree with you.

And, honestly, it’s not just about people who are busy with a lot of different responsibilities. A video game that pushes you to play every free moment is just plain unhealthy for body, mind, and spirit.

As much as the “hardcore” set like to equate MMORPGs with elite sports, in the end it’s an entertainment, and I’m glad that in GW2 we have one that can be treated like it, instead of like a second job.

I’m sure before launch that they billed the Personal Story as the portion of the game you could do with others, but didn’t need to.

It’s disappointing to hear that you have to have a group to finish it.

Even acknowledging all of the good arguments why there should be content that requires grouping, it makes no sense to give us the ability to solo our Personal Story the entire way, then switch right at the end. ArenaNet has specifically said they do not want to give us a game that suddenly changes at the end.

Then again, I am a dying breed, and the “have it nows” won.

Except you’re creating a false dichotomy here. It’s not the “I want to work for it” versus “have it now”.

I’ve been playing this game since the first BWE and loving every minute. Haven’t reached 80 on a single toon yet. I play perhaps 15 to 20 hours a week, which is pretty serious commitment in most other hobbies, is probably close to average for video game players according to studies I’ve seen, but is considered “casual” by the self described “hardcore” set.

I level about every 90 minutes of play, which is what the devs said they wanted for the average player. That means I’ve got about 120 hours of content (give or take due to the first ten level speed through) on a given toon to max. That means about eight weeks for me to get to max level, which feels about right. Anything that takes you two months of steady participation is in no way, “Have it now”.

The fact that some people choose to blow 120 hours (or even minmax their leveling time down to 90 hours) over only two weeks is in no way the fault of the developers.

Take your suggestion, and apply that to a 45 hour a week player, and you’re asking for whopping 750 or more hours to get to max level. Woohoo, so the “hardcore” are now not going to be griping they have nothing to do until four months after launch. In the same stroke, however, you’ve made the average player play for eight or nine months just to level up one character. Pity the poor players who are truly casual and do a few hours on a weekend.

This isn’t about “have it now” or “walkin’ uphill to school both ways”. This is about whether a game caters to people who do almost nothing else with their free time or to those who play it as one aspect of an otherwise full life.

I get it. I was in college once, too. I had ridiculous amounts of free time to play what were then MUDs with other computer and fantasy nerds back when the vast majority of college students only ever visited a computer lab in order to write papers.

You can’t, however, base a game on that niche group anymore, or the grind fests from the other side of the world wouldn’t do so poorly in the Western market.

The best part of these games is not having to worry about this so called “End game” kitten, and having fun playing the game.
So I’m sorry Gibson, but we’re just going to have to agree to disagree.

The funny thing is, I’m playing GW2 and not worrying about the so-called End Game kitten, and just having fun playing the game. It’s because there’s no way I could reach 80 in two weeks even if I wanted to. I’m enjoying the world, finding hidden corners, hopping between characters when the whim strikes, and generally just following whatever seems fun at the moment.

If the game was designed to cater to you and your play time, it would become painfully stretched out for me and mine. Absolutely, there should be games that satisfy us both, but why come to a game that was clearly promoted to appeal to me (they spelled out 90 minutes/level and 80 levels pretty early) and say that its big flaw is that it doesn’t cater to you? Of course it doesn’t. That’s not the game the devs set out to make.

Might as well come here arguing that the game would be a lot better if it was a Space themed shooter.

Gibson.4036

No, lHlavok.

It’s simply impossible to create enough content to keep people busy forty hours a week for four months. It’s ridiculous for the “hardcore” players to expect one game to keep them satisfied that much for that long. What else in the world can you do that much and still be satisfied? You can’t even eat bacon or have sex that much and enjoy it.

The only way to keep people busy that long is to create skinner box systems to fool you into thinking your enjoying something for that long because when you finally get your carrot the rush of accomplishment overshadows the frustration of that much grinding.

Why should those of us who play a couple hours a day take a year to get to max level so that people who fill every free moment with one game can still feel they are “progressing” three months in? There are plenty of Korean grindfests. Note how well they do in the western market.

Nevertheless, the OPs list of things is a pretty good summation of issues that need addressed. None of them, however, are keeping me from enjoying the game immensely.

Level descaling in my opinion

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gibson.4036

Gibson.4036

If anything, downscaling needs to be increased a little.

On an alt character in the teens, I was on an escort quest where a downleveled player was one and two shotting attackers before I could get to them and even hit them once.

When I play characters in downleveled areas the mobs are laughably easy.

Or was that just my fantasy?

It would make a lot of sense, since that’s what clones are supposed to do. Sure, there are plenty of ways to figure out who the real Mesmer is, but at least that would require a split second’s effort if clones at least dropped target for us.

Scaling down: not balanced right?

If anything, my experience is that low level areas down scale me down enough. On my Mesmer, Thief, and Guardian I waltz through areas that are ten or so levels below my real level.

The only time I had trouble was when I got downleveled and ran into mobs that were four or five levels above my downleveled , because they were right on on of those borders between areas where the downleveling shifts.

Hmmm, kinda hoping one of those types who tracks little details in games will be able to confirm for us.

Anyone else cap the cities first thing and noticed a difference?

My other thoughts were:

1. Did I rush through the tutorial this time and not get enough XP there? That doesn’t really work though, since I’m looking at three levels different. I’ve never gotten out of the tutorial higher than level 2.

2. Was it a issue of XP bonus from WvW? I don’t think this is the case either, since my server is losing as often as winning, and the bonuses aren’t that large even when you’re dominating. Not sure if there even is a bonus that would affect this.

Puzzling…

I just did it on a toon created a couple of days ago, and only got halfway through level 5.

My apologies to those who read this earlier, but it got deleted because I addressed it directly. Here’s a repost without “callouts”, because it seems worth doing.

I’ve posted my fair share of criticisms of things I don’t like about the game, but I want to take the opportunity of Thanksgiving Day in the US to make a little positive space and thank someone for all of the things I love about GW2.

Please respect the intent, and respond in the spirit in which this thread was created. There are plenty of other threads to air complaints and criticism.

So, in no particular order, twelve things I’d like to thank anyone responsible for:

1. A beautiful world that still gives me moments of wonder as I explore it.

2. Tybalt. Definitely my favorite character in the game.

3. No breath timer underwater.

4. So many intriguing professions I can’t figure out which one to play next.

5. The panscopic monocle.

6. The beautiful, creative redesign of the Sylvari.

7. The Sylvari culture with its Arthurian and Fae touches.

8. The city of Divinity’s reach. It still makes me grin with pleasure.

9. The entertaining, and unexpectedly complex Skritt. At first they seemed like they were solely a comic relief race, then later the storyline gave them depth.

10. Temporal Curtain. Pulling people off battlements is pure joy.

11. WvW in general. I was in awe the first time I stood atop a wall, trebuchet ammo raining all around, spells sizzling through the air and a massive melee boiling below me. I still love it.

12. All those dye colors, and up to three separate dye areas on each piece of equipment.

Thanks!

And, to add one more for good measure:

13. Diligent forum moderation, that made me smile.

Mesmer Damage Nerf

in Mesmer

Posted by: Gibson.4036

Gibson.4036

This is where the dispute comes in. If the bug fix reduced the damage output, than that means the ability was unintentionally benefiting from the bug. If there was another bug introduced as a result of the bug fix, that is something completely different.

But if the damage was balanced over time with the bug in place, of course it would need to be readjusted once the bug is removed.

If the ability was crazy overpowered due to the bug, then they fix it and they’re done.

If the ability is in a balanced state with other abilities even though it is benefiting from a bug, then fixing the bug means it has to be rebalanced.

That doesn’t seem too complicated. It looks like you’re getting hung up on semantics.

Any goodies for Thanksgiving tomorrow?

Q: Why no Thanksgiving?
A: It’s a North American holiday, and this is a worldwide game.

Q: Why aren’t special events designed so people can play them around the world?
A: Well, it is a game made by Americans, you know.

Just two things I’ve seen on the forums that I thought would be fun to place in the same post.

But yeah, if the game is boring because you can’t get pumpkin pie slices as drops one day a year, there’s a bigger issue.

Nov. Monthly Achievement Alienates Casuals

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gibson.4036

Gibson.4036

Just from a game design standpoint, wouldn’t it make more sense to use the Monthly Achievement to incentivize the things that aren’t currently the flavor of the month?

So the month you release a new dungeon, the achievement revolves around WvW.

The month you make a big WvW update, the achievement reolves around dungeons.

That way you encourage the population to continue to spread out over the game’s areas rather than all concentrating on the hot new thing, and making the other areas a ghost town.

Casual, hardcore, whatever. Just a thought.

Players enjoying, forum go-ers whining?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Gibson.4036

Gibson.4036

I think 80% of people who want this game to be 100% fair for everyone with no gear progression are just lazy, and need a reason to blame some game mechanic for their mistakes and failures in game. They are the “entitled” “I want it now” generation. They are the ones who buy a singler player game, use all the cheat codes for the good weapons or w/e, and are completely bored and done with the game hours later, but yet wonder why.

They eat their sweets right before dinner and spoil their appetite, eat their carrot on the stick too soon, and think it’s the games fault. Never questioning their own actions, or caring to hear from MMO players of old who know and realize that pure cosmetic endgame gear is simply not enough to continue to play the same character for years.

It is the gear treadmill crowd that is the “I want it now” generation, burning through hundreds of hours of content in the first month of the game as if it was a full time job, then demanding more content because of their insatiable appetite. While the rest of us are still making their way through the salad and antipasto they are lapping up their ice cream and asking for another and yet another bowl because eating anything that fast will not satisfy.

We finally finish our bowl of ice cream and are ready to sit around the table enjoying a cup of coffee and good conversation, but our treadmill friends are insisting that no one will stay at the dinner party unless the host continues to produce round after round of dessert.

It has been my experience that it is the “hardcore PvE” crowd that hits new dungeons fast and hard, which means finding and farming the exploits before the first patch can close them. The hardcore crowd has its share of the “cheat code” population.

However in my opinion, endgame gear progression = good thing, despite what "penny arcade, or some helium voiced cartoon on “extra credit thinks”

Have a great day everyone, and lets all try to be more civil and not personally attack others who are respectful, but have a different opinion.

I don’t understand your references. I expect they are to game media of some sort such as a blog.

I take your point on civility and respect, and apologize for the snarkiness of my last post. Calling people who disagree with you “lazy”, however, is not very respectful either.

I think the thing that you are missing is that the crowd reacting passionately against what looks like the beginning of a gear treadmill are not asking for an ezmode treadmill. They are asking for a game without one at all.

Some games are about risk/reward. That’s only one kind of game, however.

Look at the evolution of the pen and paper RPG. Dungeons and Dragons started the genre off with risk/reward, simulation and strategy as its core. In the nineties, however, writers started experimenting with diceless, levelless, statless games. They were more focused on story and hidden systems, rather than numbers. Some of them were brilliant games, and in my own experience, had much more lasting power than the power progression that was a staple of mainstream RPGs.

Sure, make an argument that an immersion based, story-oriented MMORPG is not financially viable. But don’t dismiss 80% of people who want to play games for a different reason than ever-increasing character power (matched by ever increasing enemy power) as being simply of the “lazy”, “I want it now” generation.

That’s as bad as “players enjoy the game”, “forum goers whine”.

Lost Shores Feedback Thread

Gibson.4036

It’s the problem of pure democracy. Majority rules. It’s the reason any good democracy has safeguards to protect minorities. You can’t simply go with the 51%, because 49% get screwed.

It bears repeating that the point of highest average concurrency in a given week does not necessarily equal the point in the week when most people could make time to enjoy a special event. The greatest amount of people are typically online noon Pacific Time on Sunday. That doesn’t mean those same people couldn’t make another time when even more players would also be able to enjoy them.

ANet has decided that it is more important for a large number of players to get to enjoy a couple hour event instead of a larger number of players being able to enjoy a 24 hour event. Unfortunate, but there will likely never be resolution between the players who can make it on noon Pacific Time on Sundays and love the idea of an extremely limited event and the players who feel like they are getting only a portion of the game they paid for.

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those that understand the complexities of people, and those that think there are only two kinds of people in this world.

Which is to say, your simplification into “whiners on the forum” and “people just enjoying the game” is an oversimplification to the point of being meaningless.

I enjoy this game a lot. I tend to think about it when I’m not playing it, and look forward to when I can play it again. It frequently gives me a sense of wonder as I explore the world.

There are, however, choices I don’t like that the game’s owners have made. They have provided an official forum, and say they want feedback. So when I don’t like something, I make sure to let them know.

Does that make me a forum whiner? Or someone just enjoying the game?

So few buttons...

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Gibson.4036

Don’t let the number of buttons fool you.

Many skills have multiple uses. There are the chain skills, which are three skills loaded onto one button with the requirement that you use them in order. Then there are skills like Mesmer’s Temporal Curtain which is a speed buff, a cripple, a AoE pull, and can be traited to be a projectile reflect. It’s also a combo field so that when followed up with another skill you can get four different results out of it.

So even with your ten skills, you have a lot more than ten abilities. Add weapon swapping to that (for all but two professions) and you have five more skills, followed by the adddition of profession skills, which can range from one four additional abilities.

If you want a lot of options, Elementalist or Engineer are probably your go-to professions. Elementalist attunement swapping has already been explained above, giving you twenty five skills to play with.

Engineer has kits, which give you an entirely new set of 1-5 skills when each one is equipped, while leaving a utility on your “toolbelt”. You could go kit crazy, equipping four in your 6-10 slots, leaving you with 30 different skills you can play with at once.

An option to disable right click targeting

This is a huge problem.

I just recently got into upper levels. Before that, I could ignore the problem. In higher level areas, however, there are tightly packed, fast respawning mobs, and right click targeting is making sure I’m constantly targeting adds until I am surrounded by aggroed mobs.

I’m adaptable. I used to play holding down both mouse buttons to move forward and turn, but I changed for GW2 to the standard of using the mouse for turning only because of the ground targeted abilities.

The problem is, I can’t figure out how the developers were expecting us to play this game with right click targeting! The only other option I can figure is keyboard turning, which isn’t really an option, especially in a game that emphasizes never standing still and, of course, PvP.

If the game designers feel that right click targeting is a key part of how the game works (so they aren’t going to let us turn it off), it’d be great to at least hear what they were shooting for as the optimal controls. Are they all keyboard turners?

If I was allowed to choose the most important things that need to be addressed in the game, this would be at the top of my list.

We need a really clear statement from ANet that Ascended gear will be available through crafting, WvW, open world content, in addition to dungeons, and that there won’t be a big stretch of time between its addition to the other spheres of gameplay.

They have indicated this might be the case, but not with the clarity necessary.

Now, it feels like I’m trying to drive my Mesmer under the influence, so to speak. The things that I used to do while kiting handfuls of mobs now seem to fail most of the time and get me killed.

Those little hilly areas on the new island were murder. What appears to be a couple foot drop in terrain is filling the screen with “Obstructed” notices.

One thing I don’t see listed here is that I seem to be constantly switching targets in the middle of combat for no apparent reason. As I said, I’m not really methodical enough to figure out exactly what is going on. Is anyone else having this problem? I did notice another mesmer who seemed to be attacking random mobs in the middle of fights, but I didn’t ask if it was intentional or not.

I play using keys entirely for movement and skills, with the right mouse button held down for turning most of the time. I’ve read people talking about mouse turning somehow selecting other targets, but haven’t really experienced anything like that. Suddenly, with the patch, I’m constantly switching targets to nearby mobs I haven’t aggroed.

How ANet could get more money from me:

I haven’t spent any money beyond the box price yet. I’m a “smell-the-roses” kind of player, though I play too much to really be considered “casual” if you are talking just time spent logged in.

Having said that, I’m just now getting to the point where I am considering two more character slots so I can have one toon of all seven of the professions I’m interested in. I’m also just now getting to the point where I’m considering another bank tab, because up to now I’ve been able to manage my inventory well.

But those are the only things currently in the cash shop that interest me at all. There are other things that would get me to spend more real money on this game.

1. Mounts – Yes, I know people hate this idea, but a 60% speed boost, land only mount would be worth money to me. I like the feel of riding a horse in a fantasy game. And it would put me out in the world, crossing zones, more than the current waypoint system does. I promise not to complain when I get dismounted by mobs when I try to ride through them and they engage me in combat.

2. Automatic Town Clothes when in town – As it is now, I don’t have an interest in town clothes, because I don’t want the hassle of switching to them every time I enter a town, only to have them disappear as soon as I take 2 hp of falling damage. Another option would be to give me the option for Automatic Town Clothes when not in Combat. I’ll wear them even more, and see them as worth purchasing.

3. Attractive Town Clothes – Right now we mostly have gag clothes. Chef’s cap, aviator glasses, boxing gloves. I’d like other options beyond my starter set of Town Clothes that I can wear. Things that are attractive and make me distinctive when out of combat.

4. Name Change Contract – Despite rumors, this hasn’t appeared in the CS yet. I have a level 65 character with a name that people pronounce differently than intended. I’ve since come up with something far better, and would like to change to that. It’d be worth 800 gems to get a new name without having to level from 1 again.

5. Awesome dance emotes – I’d be willing to sink some cash into some cool dances.

6. More stuff that is Account wide, instead of character bound. As is probably clear by my intro, I tend to make and delete a lot of characters. I’m not going to put real money down for something that is going to disappear if I choose to delete a character, or simply lose interest and stop playing that character.

7. Lastly, of course, would be expansion type content. New zones to play in, new professions, etc.

On the flip side, there are two things I will never spend real money on:

1. Items that give me a chance, but only a chance, at something good. I want to be able to way my perceived value against the price of the item and make an informed choice about whether it’s worth my hard earned money. Gambling is a sucker’s game, and I’m not at all interested in it.

2. Consumables. I’m okay with throwing away in game gold on consumables. I’m not okay with putting down real money for a 15, 30, or 60 minute boost in game. That’s just a hole that eats money and will never be filled.

3. “Convenience” items that shortcut my way to higher power levels. I will never spend cash to fast track through gear tiers. The #1 reason I will abandon a game is at the point where other players have a distinct advantage in PvP (read WvW here) because they have repeatedly done the same content long enough.

ANet, I’m having a blast in GW2. It’s a beautiful, intriguing world filled with hidden details, and I frequently feel that sense of wonder that is one of the primary reasons I play games like this.

I thought it would be helpful to let you know how you can (and can’t) get more of my money.
