Hi Mask,

Thanks for taking the time to make and share your video. I have only one question at the moment: How do you feel about Power Shoes? It seems to me that your style would be served well by it. You would have to lose either Coated Bullets or HGH to get it. Does HGH really give you that big of a damage boost?

cheers,
G

It might work, it seems like something worth trying. Coated bullets is great in some situations but useless in others and I’ve thought about replacing it. my problem is losing that extra precision/cd from the firrearms trait line; as for HGH, well the damage increase is noticeable, doing 160+ bleed ticks is quite insane.

I always forget that when we make hybrid builds we lose the stat increases from maxing out the trait lines. Though with the increase in Toughness from inventions you could possibly adjust your gear to regain some lost power and condition damage.

Thanks for sharing your knowledge of HGH. That is a pretty significant damage boost that I wouldn’t give up.

So plain and simple, are turrets a viable way to PvP in the game yet?

They’re not even viable in dungeons where light, periodic area damage is a factor. I have seen my healing turret destroyed less than a second or two of putting it down, and I was between 500 and 900 range from the fight. At their currently too low damage levels and too high cooldown lengths, they should be immune to all damage and have their total duration cut to about 12 seconds.

The Rifle Turret should be deployed. Drop it, detonate it (get a Static Discharge), then follow up with Surprise Shot and another Static Discharge. That’s a lot of burst. Also—it gives you another Blast Finisher to combo with. I’m a huge fan of having at least one turret in my arsenal and if you’re going with a Static build this is the one. Just my .02.

Seeking Build Advice (specific)

Grackleflint.4956

I’m in a small friends and family guild with 4 other players. Here’s our roster:

Engineer (me)
Guardian
Thief
2 Rangers

We spend a good deal of time in Orr and doing dungeons. I need a build that can contribute the most to the group, but I’m finding it difficult to nail something down. The closest I’ve been to where I want to be as far as group dynamics is a Pistol/Shield build with a focus on support through Elixir Gun, Elixir R with Supply Crate. The third utility slot seemed to change a lot though I’ve tried Grenades and Bombs there the most.

I’m seeking suggestions that would fit nicely into my group composition and honestly will play any kind of set up. I have no strict preferences.

Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

So I gave this build a spin in WvW, and here’s what I discovered. Keep in mind that I’m not level 80 (I’m 74) and was not playing with the best gear to compliment this build.

Pros:
*It’s fun and different offering a refreshing change of pace.
*Nobody is used to seeing Engineers play like this (yet) which gives it an advantage.
*Elixir S followed by 5 seconds of blocking will get you out of the most dire situations.
*Confusion is one of the most powerful conditions.
*Retaliation is one of the best boons.
*Magnet is powerful and useful.
*Pistol and Shield add utility to this build giving you an additional Confuse, Block, a Blast Finisher, and added defense.
*Med Kit heal is strong and on a short cooldown.

Cons:
*After casting Magnet, Prybar, and popping Elixir B the vast majority of my foes would run away. This was amusing, but extremely annoying. Even the Cripple applied by Smack (Tool Kit #1) and Throw Wrench (Tool Kit toolbelt skill) didn’t seem to help keep people from escaping.
*Clunky play, reliant on coordinating several cooldowns with no guarantee that your opponent will play into your hands.
*Low damage output outside of the combo of Prybar, Elixir B, + people hitting you.
*Pistol hits like a wet noodle and without supporting traits or gear it doesn’t feel like the right weapon for this build, even though Shield compliments it nicely.

Thoughts and Analysis:
*While the Med Kit toolbelt heal is strong and on a short cooldown, the kits 1-5 abilities feel redundant as this build is already very tanky. With a heavy investment in the Elixirs trait line Elixir H seems like a stronger choice.
*Confusion is POWERFUL. I am going to try to shoehorn Bomb Kit into the build. You may have noticed that Static Shot, Prybar, and Concussion Bomb are all in the #3 position, so quick swapping of kits can let you apply many stacks of confusion easily. Just swap and mash 3. I’m not sure if this will be too clunky, but I’m willing to try it to see if I can get 10 stacks of Confusion.
*Rifle might be a better weapon choice. This is a tanky build, but also has some burst which is what the rifle is all about. If someone tries to run from you you can hit them with Net. If you’re not ready to rumble you can blast them back with Overcharged Shot. If they’re limping away and near death you can easily finish them with Blunderbuss or Jump Shot. This gives the build a more active than passive style.
*I’m not totally sold on Supply Crate as the elite for this build. With the in-your-face play style I’m seriously considering Elixir X. If our Elixir traits interacted with X properly (i.e. weren’t bugged), I think it would be the best elite for this build.
*Pain Inverter (Asuran Only): This racial gives you 6 seconds of Retaliation, and inflicts 3 stacks of Confusion (5 sec duration) on all enemies within a radius of 360 range. Not as awesome as all of the boons you get from Elixir B, but it really lays on the Confusion, and has a shorter cooldown. Needs testing.

I’m going to play with the build some more, add some tweaks of my own, and then get back to you all with some news.

Thanks to mischwoof for sharing this fun build.

What do you all think about Sigil of Superior Hydromancy for this build?

Grackleflint.4956

WvW seems like the place where most players new to PvP begin. If we don’t already have a thread or guide going, I’d encourage people to post their tips here. It seems like there are some core essentials to being successful in WvW that are quite different from sPvP and Tournament play. When I say successful in WvW I personally mean: reaching objectives (getting there alive) and being useful when you arrive. Both lofty goals considering how disorganized most groups are, but these are the two goals I strive for in WvW.

If you have thoughts, questions, tips, or builds please post them here.

From Destroyer:
Three basic things you can do in the options menu:
1) Turn on fast cast [Fast Cast Ground Targeting] for less button mashing and faster grenade throwing.
2) Turn on auto loot to save yourself many headaches.
3) Turn off the camera autocorrect so you can run away and toss grenades at same time.

I could’t agree more, Destroyer! I’ll be cutting and pasting your tips into my original post. It’ll be a slow process as I’m very busy, but I’ll get to it I promise. Thanks for all of your tips and comments.

From Kimbald:
Flame Jet (Flamethrower #1) goes through doors, so be sure to burn those pesky people operating that Ram at your gate.

Speedy Kits allows for permanent swiftness to help ease all of the running you have to do.

Gear Shield into Static Shield (or vice versa) gives you 5 seconds of blocking—great for getting past a zerg or reaching that door or portal.

Box of Nails (Tool Kit #2) triggers off of Refined Kits giving you a cripple you can cast while moving.

From Casia:
Every aoe goes through doors. Not just Flamethrower #1.

Frost Grenades 240 range is vital for hitting seige/trebs, etc at on walls, “out of range” of other aoe.

Runes of the centaur are incredibly op for escorting yaks. (These add swiftness to allies and swiftness duration is increased).

Elixir builds in general are very good at escorting yaks. protection, swiftness, retaliation, regeneration. Elixir U’s walls in general are very strong in WvW. They do not work on catapult/trebs though. Elixir R’s thrown res is vital. Elixir U’s quickness=faster build (of siege, I assume), faster grab supply, faster stomp.

Deployable Turrets does not work essentially killing any turret build in WvW.

Vs. Supply camp lords: Vulnerability increases damage they take dramatically. (grenades)
Bleeds also work slightly, and confuse works greatly. (sounds like conditions in general are good, but focus on Vulnerability and Confuse).

Stacking 3 turrets in a combo field and blowing them up, stacks many combos.
Yaks. lightning field+3 turrets=area swiftness. (Not sure what the total duration on this is—can you comment further?)

Throw Mine

Throw Mine skill is OP now, why is no one using this masterpiece!?

I’ve considered it but haven’t used it much. It’s definitely a solid skill that I can think of a lot of uses for. With Speedy Gadgets and points in Tools the cooldown is around 14 seconds. I play mainly PVE but I can think of uses in PVP such as dropping one behind yourself if a Thief is nearby.

With Static Discharge you also get two back to back lightning bolts when you drop the minefield and then when you detonate it.

I can see it being hard to make room for it on my bar since it’s fairly situational.

I would love to see the Tool Kit get some tweaks. Right now its strongest ability is its Toolbelt Skill (Throw Wrench). The #1 needs to attack faster and do a LOT more healing on turrets. #2 needs a faster casting time. #3 should have a shorter cooldown, #4 is fine—maybe increase the duration to 3 seconds or give it a counterattack on block, and #5 needs its range and casting time increased and decreased respectively. Also, as an Asuran Engineer player, I would love to see the wrench itself scaled up. This kit is very close to being a viable melee option.

I would like to see my wrench graphic enlarged to give the kit some more visual appeal. As for Magnet, I would like to see it act as a short range AoE disarm—maybe a 2 second duration. I would also like to see the attack speed of the wrench increased. It’s a weapon kit and should be as viable as the other weapon kits—that is, we can stay in it and do decent damage.

Nerf the effin Engineer. Wholy Kitten Skrittman that’s burst.

No. To set up grenade barrage the engineer in that video is using Net Shot: 10 second cooldown EASILY dodged attack (keep your eye out for the only smart player in the vid who actually dodges it), and he has to do his rotation set up OUT of stealth. Also, part of his rotation is the buggy/slow as hell Jump Shot. Another move that is very easily and regularly dodged. Eng are not even on par with Thief ease and power of burst. 99% of the players who died in that video didn’t know where their dodge key was.
