going to defend engis a bit. Leaving rest of discussion untouched, because most of stuff people already said about ele and thiefs are true.

Engi, outside of thief, is probably best vuln stacker you’ll ever get. And they do this without placing dark fields everywhere. 25 stacks of vuln = 25% dps increase. Additional they have high aoe burst with rifle and toolbelt skills + get some useful utilities if needed: 12 sec of stealth from blasting + 5 sec for elixir s, elixir u projectile block / reflect (good for complementary use), fire fields every 10 seconds for LH ele, aoe cleanse with pretty good heal on 15 sec cooldown, blinds with flame turret, bombs and grenades, defiant stripping, knockbacks (which is kinda annoying most of the time).

That makes them not as useful as thief or ele (most of the time), but actually more useful than second or third warrior in balanced party.

But, well, I’m not a pro dungeon speed runner. I’m doing dungeons pretty efficient with my guildies, and don’t have too many problems with fractals, since we’re running pretty balanced parties.

We fell into the trap of “big numbers” and lack of dps meter. People still think warrior is better than anything else because of hb. But actually they’re not best dps class, they’re just easier to play than ele and thief.

We actually already know all the engie strengths. The real problem with engies right now in the meta is:

1) Very few people actually play engie. That’s true in both pugs (FT Juggernaut “might stacker” engie lolol) and “pro” speedruns (look up the rT “Guangway” run on Youtube). It’s the same issue as Rangers being considered bad in practice even though most people acknowledge they are theoretically good.

2) Vuln stacking is highly relative to the rest of the comp since unlike might, it multiples damage output by a flat percentage. A might-stacker in a pug gives a decent boost to a zerk and a massive one to a pug in Magi or something. On the other hand vuln is multiplicative so it will have relatively little effect on pugs who aren’t dealing any damage to begin with.

3) Most speedrun groups already spec to stack some vuln (usually via FGS with Weak Spot/Rending Strikes/Sundering Strikes). The engie basically takes over the role but that means that the other classes have to change their specs from vuln stacking to straight DPS. A lot of people forget to do this so the result is that you’re bringing an engie for vuln but not actually getting any extra vuln or DPS out of it cause the rest of the party is already specced for max vuln stacks.

Mind Spike with no boons Coeff = 1.1
Backtab from back = 2.4
Heartseeker below 25% = 2
Eviscerate with 3 adrenaline = 3
Fire Grub vs Burning = 2.8

Such infinity damage…

PH, a bug that affected the core of mesmers and has been fixed after 1,5 years of knowledge of it. And, instead of becoming better over the time, as patchs were introducd, more phantasms had the bug.

Good heal… when warrior has even better passive healing without doing nothing, eles, guards and engis that can heal through other skills…

And no, noone used the teleport on iLeap. It was a mindblowing discover from two days ago, cmoon…

“All these long-cooldown/situational skills deal more damage than the auto-attack that I can use while stacking phantasms that also hit mobs constantly for massive damage.”

Balancing around skill floor just leads to classes being stupidly broken at the top end. That then leads to newbies getting steamrolled by the ridiculously broken top tier characters being played by top-level players and then crying about that. In this case, you can balance pug-level effectiveness and watch said pugs cry about not being able to get into “elitist” groups because you just made _ class stupidly OP and no one wants anything else.

Fun fact: Most people like to think they are top-level meta players whether they are or not. That’s why you see constant whining about top tiers in fighting games even if said top tiers are insanely hard to play and 99% of the tourney scene can’t even play said character at a halfway decent level, much less well enough to justify top tier status.

I’m lost. Nemesis video is biased because shows necros are too good or that they are rubbish? I heard both takes on that video.
I really don’t get all controversy about that video. It only shows that Necromancer are not as bad, as I originally thought and in some cases can dish out decent amount of damage. People are angry because they thought Wariors are by far superior to Necros or because we can’t say that Necros are terrible all the time?

This is what cracks me up so much about this debate.

Both Nemesis and the ‘meta players’ attempted to find out how Necromancer & Warrior DPS compare. Nemesis demonstrated his findings through real-world practice, ‘meta players’ through exhaustive theoretical calculations. Neither side disputes that Necromancers lack utility in group encounters. Here are the results:

Nemesis: Necro DPS is roughly = Warrior DPS. Necromancer DPS is fine as it is.
‘meta players’: Necro DPS is roughly = Warrior DPS. Necromancer DPS is fine as it is.

Both sides arrived at the same conclusion, even when approached from two different directions and yet they both say the other’s methods are hopelessly flawed and biased and thus their conclusions can’t be accurate.

They can’t even agree to disagree since (whether they admit it or not) they actually completely agree, as their results are nearly identical.

Except warrior DPS isn’t even good. Right now warrior is 4th from the bottom in overall DPS, take necro out of the bottom and that makes them tied for 3rd from the bottom.

Right now engineer has the second-highest DPS in the game, applies ridiculous amounts of vuln and might and can apply stealth, reflect, condition removal in liberal quantities and they’re still unpopular in dungeons for various reasons. They aren’t necessarily good reasons, but even if a necro hit as hard as an engineer there still wouldn’t be any reason to take a necro because they can’t even do any of the things I listed above.

It’s not ZERK’s fault for realizing necro brings nothing useful to the table. They do decent dps and have moderate survivability and can provide a bit of blind and weakness— but there are other classes that are better at all of that.

Ranger, on the other hand, has unique bonuses like spotter and frost spirit. That makes them good.

Take a look also at what’s happening to Mesmer. Time warp is seen as less important, and guardians have enough reflects and other types of support. The only unique thing a Mesmer can do is portal. So for the most part, that’s the only reason to bring a Mesmer. I main a mes, so it sucks to realize that, but that’s just the way it is. I play ele and warrior in most dungeons instead.

Necro actually has okay vuln and weakness stacking. The problem is that the engineer has better vuln stacking and weakness is usually viewed as non-important.

A buff to weakness might help necro out a bit, as would quite a few other changes, but that’s neither here nor there.

It’s bad DPS. That’s exactly the point. He’kittenting really crap numbers even with all the personal stacking he’s doing on himself. Keep in mind that Life Blast fires REALLY slow and it’s not even 100% uptime. If he wanted to be doing actual DPS comparable to a warrior he needs to be running dagger and using multiple minions and wells. I see neither in this build.

And yes, I know minions suck. That’s also kind of the point.

Assassin stat has a better chance of procs which may be useful if your class has a large number of useful on-crit proc effects, like the engineer or mesmer. Ranger does not have anything particularly great, and on top of that their easy access to Fury + Spotter means they will typically be running up very close to the crit chance cap.

Warrior and ele numbers can always be tweaked to bring them in line with the others but guardians are inherently OP not due to numbers but because of the utility they bring. They have way too many heals, condi removals and useful abilities like Stability for the entire team and so on. Guardians and Necros need to be redesigned completely as professions.

Guardians don’t do anything useful that other classes don’t?

Tell me then why do runs always go better if you have a guardian in the team?

Why is it that form PVE to sPVP and WvW the class is universally acclaimed and desired?

Primarily because people don’t know how to play mesmers I guess? I have no idea. I’ve never found guardians to be super useful except as a subpar support backup with better AOE DPS than a mesmer. Their slightly higher burst and AOE makes clearing some trash faster in speedruns and protection can be helpful in fractals but that’s about it.

Is there a debate that single target melee dps mesmer is a contender?

Contender with what? Staff ele is obviously better sustained both single-target and AOE but if you’re comparing DPS on a single target with any other class, then no, there’s no debate, except that mesmer is pretty much 100% sustained and lacks burst.

The problem I have with all these discussions is the result is always the same in PvE: melee with Sword because that gives the best mesmer dps.

Where is the build diversity? This precludes all other mesmer weapon sets that are ranged. The sad thing? We still can’t compete with top melee 100b etc. If you want to melee, go with those classes.

Anet needs to fix the range options because the risk/reward basically kills build diversity. The only unique thing mesmers bring is reflect, and if you spec & time right, that’s where your major damage comes from.

So as mentioned above, what’s viable? Staying alive with reflect and some form of dps. If anyone who insists on strictly mesmer melee is playing the wrong class because if you are a pro dodger, play a glassy top dps – which a mesmer is not.

Anet doesn’t make ranged-only content to exclude melee pugs for the same reason they don’t make hard content that would exclude ranged pugs, with a few rare exceptions. But even the Legendary Grawl Shaman etc. are meleeable if you’re paying enough attention.

GS is better when:
- You do not have 25 might stacks from the party.
- You do not need to kite or dodge (can get full uninterrupted HB on cooldown)
- You can push the target up against a wall for WWA, or the target is big enough to get hit by all WWA hits without walling

Axe will do exactly as much as a non-interrupted HB/non-walled WWA rotation GS with equal might stacks. If you don’t meet any of those requirements, axe is generally better since the DPS is just more stable.

Um, engie works just fine when you’re in a situation where:

1) You need both high burst and sustained DPS in a fight that can’t be FGS’d.
2) You don’t need stealth as long as the thief’s.
3) You don’t need as much reflect uptime as a mesmer or guardian.

Of course you CAN take a thief for Arah skips or a mesmer for the SE golems, but you don’t really need that much uptime on stealth/reflect in either case and you’re just losing out on DPS, doubly so if you’re taking both a thief and guardian’mesmer instead of just one engineer.

To be absolutely fair, GS is okay for most PvE content that doesn’t require optimization. The phantasm summons fairly quickly and Mirror Blade is a short CD that gives solo might so it’s decent for churning out clones quickly. It’s also got a long range so it’s good for AFKing world bosses, especially the ones that don’t kill phantasms. You can put 3 Zerkers/Warlocks on the Mark II Golem then jump off the platform and grab a sandwich or whatever. I mean that’s true for any weapon but GS/Staff combo gets them up a few seconds faster than a dual sword set.

The kick in phase 1 is actualy not that telegraphed, its hard to avoid unless you can guess at the timing and can move out of melee range so it won’t hit you. Another clue is that he looks in the direction he is goin to kick, so if you are not in front you won’t be hit. The one in phase 2 however, should be telegraphed enough that you can avoid it. His aoe spray is still hard to avoid at melee range, but the trouble for those ranging starts from phase 2 to end. In phase 3 he will actually start chasing whoever is ranging or running away from him, so if you are in melee range you will be safer. You should also not move around, or he will put you in his bubble that will do a lot of dmg unless u have stability to dodge out of it.

The p1 kicks are actually about reacting to what he doesn’t do. He never does two of the same move in order (I think because his kick has a CD) so if he kicks once, he won’t do it again. If he does any other move and doesn’t immediately do the other non-kick move after (which starts its animation sooner), it’s going to be a kick.

The P2 spray is in fact easier at melee range because it makes Feedback work on it (if you’re a mesmer) and otherwise it puts the timing on the explosions closer together. If you’re in melee range all the AOEs will land on you pretty much immediately after he animates the spray so you can just dodge once and avoid all of them. If you’re at range the pattern of the projectiles becomes much more random and you may be looking at an interval of as much as 2-3 seconds between the first and last explosions, making them very hard to hit. Also, if someone is standing too close to you, the timing on his explosions will be slightly different as well so that just adds to the total “danger window” that you have to be invulnerable for to avoid the full spray.

There’s no reason why a game HAS to have a role where “big guy in heavy armor stands in one spot so things will hit only him.” People got used to that role but as we’ve already established GW2 isn’t meant to be your conventional MMO. That siad, it also doesn’t mean that Anet isn’t giving players plenty of options for playing the roles they like to play. What do you think the guardian is doing by spamming protects and walls on everyone? He’s not pulling aggro and eating lots of damage but he is enabling other players to focus more on their own jobs (dealing damage) by mitigating damage. What people take issue with is the fact that the guardian can do that AND still put out decent damage in the process, and they don’t want that to be an option because then THEY can’t do only the former and ignore the latter.

Arguing for trinity as opposed to hybrids is literally asking Anet to limit each class’s options because you don’t like healing/tanking at the same time as attacking and would prefer to take out the attacking part.

  • So should defensive focused roles/builds/gear be excluded from high end game play?
  • Does defensive focused only mean passive play as active defence is just something we bring and doesn’t matter what favour we focus on (Offensive/Defensive).

Defensive gear should be excluded ya. But not defensive role/build/skills.

You just need to be smart and follow a couple of simple rules.
- Good defense/support is party wide. If it only help you, that’s shouldn’t be focus on.
- Good defense/support should prevent your party from being damage, not repair the damage after. Its always better to prevent a problem, then try to fix it after.
- DPS should still be your main focus and you should only bring the defense/support you need to the content. As a guardian, when I go in Fractal, I usually bring protection from my hammer, superior Aria for more shout and master of consecration for reflect and condi removal. But I never bring those in dungeon like CoF or CoE because they are not needed there.

Things like aegis, blind, reflect, block, protection, vigor, weakness, etc are really good defense/support. Condi removal is also good, but you don’t need that much in PvE except in some specific situation.

The problem is that, however it might sound like hyperbole, people don’t WANT their defenses to be party-wide, because then that means responsibility is shared. They don’t want to be the guardian who uses a hammer to reduce all incoming damage to the party by 33%, because then EVERYONE gets that defense buff, including the DPS. That in turn means that they’re no longer “the tank” which means they have no special excuse not to contribute. If on the other hand they’re the ONLY one taking 33% less damage, they can sit at the front, not even attack, and go “well I’m not doing any damage but I’m still doing my part by taking hits that would down the rest of you.” Whether that’s true or not is irrelevant, the important thing is that you have an excuse to feel like you’re contributing.

Like I’ve said before in the other thread, it’s not the inability to play non-DPS roles that people take issue with, but the fact that non-dedicated DPS is still required to DPS. It’s easy to mask it behind the “trinity = more roles = more diversity” but what you’re actually asking for is reducing the number of roles by locking people into playing ONLY DPS, support, or tank, etc. rather than encouraging hybrid roles, which is what the game does currently.

Even in games where healers and tanks are required, if you’re trying to optimize you would still spec as much DPS as possible with the minimum amount of healing and support necessary. That’s just how healing works, you don’t need a guy who is 100% healing and 0% DPS when 50% healing is enough to keep everyone comfortably at max health. That’s why in GW1 you could get away with not having a monk in a lot of scenarios and instead take a ritualist with Restoration spells on half his bar and Channeling or Communing on the other half, or an Ele with /Mo subclass using 2-3 heal skills and 2-3 Fire spells.

Realistically speaking, it boils down to complaining that YOUR specific build doesn’t work. Want to have good healing and defensive support while still being useful? Make a Zealot’s Guardian with healing symbols and a hammer and mace, or a Scepter ele specced for quick attunement swaps between Water and Air, etc. Not everyone is a super hardcore 100% record-setting speedrunner who dodges everything. In fact, with the current so-called “stacking meta” for pugs, having someone who can spam decent regen heals and defensive buffs is actually a pretty good thing to have to avoid random downs costing kill stacks, so long as that regen doesn’t come at an excessive DPS cost.

I’m pretty sure 99% of the people who complain about lack of trinity are playing their own class wrong.

“I built my warrior like a tank but I can’t even hold aggro when I try.”
“I made a healer elementalist but my heals suck and everyone goes down too fast to heal.”

There is maybe one profession in this game that is actually raw DPS and that is ele running staff. Everything else is varying degrees of support, control, or “tank”. You can totally make a “support” character who buffs his allies instead of dealing damage, that’s what a Phalanx Warrior or Hammer Guardian build is all about. Alternately you can roll a mesmer and use phantasms to “tank” hits meant for other people by absorbing damage with clones, Wardens, and Defenders. Or you can roll a thief and spam blind fields, which is pretty much hardcore CC with no DPS.

It’s pretty obvious that the problem isn’t with not being able to play a support role because there’s tons of ways to do that. The problem is that people want to play JUST a support role and don’t want to have to attack anything for some bizarre reason. If you wanted to, you totally could play 3 DPS – 1 Healer – 1 Tank and succeed in pretty much any content, and it might actually go pretty smoothly if the “tank” and DPS are actually working together to keep aggro focused on the former. Apparently like 99% of pugs are pacifists and want to be tanks or healers though so your party comp is most likely going to end up being something like 3 “tanks” (who make no effort to keep aggro) and 1 healer (who only heals himself) and one very ineffectual “DPS”. And that’s going to fail in any MMO regardless of whether there’s an official trinity or not.

tl;dr i’m pretty sure 99% of the people crying for trinity would get booted from any party in a game with a real trinity, so just be glad that GW2 is designed so one guy carrying four bad players is actually possible.

How would you phrase the LFG for this?

“LFG P1, will not use wall of reflection”

Is GS worth using now?

Don’t know what you are talking about. GS was a good option since release. Of course not for all content. In dungeons it sucks because most of the time you don’t range enemies there.

Aren’t you talking about scepter?

I’m pretty sure he is talking about dungeons. I don’t think anyone cares what you run in PvE in any other context.

The answer to that question is that greatswords still suck for dungeons, so you’re likely out of luck on that front.

Ranged attack in dungeons?

Thanks for the reply! :-) So .. you equip two melee weapon sets and take a ranged weapon with you, “just in case” your team doesn’t play so well?

And aren’t there any bosses or mobs that are better dealt with by using ranged attacks? I can’t remember anyone fighting Giganticus Lupicus in Arah in melee range, for instance ..

Lupicus is actually easiest in melee once you know his tells because his most dangerous attacks (his single-target projectile, which moves extremely fast and is hard to avoid, and his AOE spray in phase 2) are basically totally negated at close range. The moves he gets as a replacement (the kick in phase 1 and the swipe in phase 2) do a ton of damage but are also highly telegraphed and easy to avoid.

Since pugs typically do not know these tells they opt for what seems like the safer route, which is basically ranging him and letting him repeatedly down people while you res them. It is slow and unreliable but it’s a better alternative than watching your entire pug get wiped out by a single swipe.

Hits 3 targets, four with Elasticity, plus conditions inflicted by clones and phantasms and you’re in pretty good shape for multi-target damage.

Just raise number of Winds of Chaos bounces to two and let it prioritize hitting multiple targets instead of bouncing back to the same guy twice. Fairly easy fix.
