Armor looks best on humans. I have one asura and I hate how I can’t see anything that he’s wearing.

I mean he’s not completely off. This build is not ground breaking but it does encourage people to do more than just go 0/5/30/30/5 or 0/0/30/30/10. I will however say that with this build I have had more success in WvW than I ever did with RHS builds or full support builds. Also one of the benefits of this build is it’s relatively cheap to use. You don’t have to break the bank to use this.

Being one of these annoying condition mesmers, we are very hard to beat. Being able to stealth and let the conditions burn you down is their main strength. Thankfully for engineers we have skills that don’t require a specific target that have good AOE (bombs/nades). Just try to keep distance and burst the snot out of him after he blows his stealth skills. The mesmer is most likely also very bad at cleansing conditions

Basically what colesy said for PvE. For WvW I always roam with my thief and warrior friend. The offensive spikes that both those classes provide really work great with my more defensive abilities. The best part about roaming with a warrior is they can use their warhorn to help out with our horrendous mobility. I also roamed with a necro from my guild yesterday and it worked surprisingly well. My physical dmg pressure and his condition dmg synergized well and we were just melting groups.

Skyhammer + knockbacks = Unlimited amount of laughter

Same build that I use when I play spvp. Gotta say it’s insanely fun to just camp the gun at skyhammer and use LB#4 to push people off the ledge. I always end up dying of laughter when I play that map now

As a guardian it’s hard to look over at the Warriors and see how completely OP they are but Guardians are in a relatively good place right now. We’re balanced. If you want to see crazy numbers then you’re gonna have to sacrifice some survivability. D/D ele’s used to be great offensively and defensively until they got the nerf bat and look where that class as a whole is right now. Anet said in the 12/10 patch they wanna add some offense to the guardian but otherwise we are already pretty well balanced.

I’ve been a member of the guardian community and have finally decided to post a build on here. This build is for WvW and is aimed for primarily for roaming. An AH build with PoV would be optimal for zerging instead of this. However, this does work for both, as I’m lazy and don’t like to change traits all the time.

Armor: I chose a mix of knights and soldiers to get a healthy amount of power and toughness. Ruby orbs were chosen just because of the pure dps they bring and the fact that they’re cheap, making this build viable for people who don’t want to drop massive amounts of gold just on runes for their armor. Feel free to replace runes with whatever you prefer.

Trinkets: All zerk. You want to see big numbers right?

Weapons: I’m a sucker for big two handed weapons so I chose hammer and greatsword. A great dps combo with these 2 weapons is to start RoW, use JI, Banish, Mighty Blow, then switch to GS for the symbol + WW combo. I typically can melt through most opponents with just that.

Build: 20/0/30/20 because the power from the traitline, extra gs dmg, and cool down for 2h weapons all synergize nicely. And then MF with meditation cooldowns for obvious reasons.

Like others have said, guardian or warrior. Best survivability, the hammer can blast fields, and when you want to be the last player alive in a battle so full PVT with either of these can take quite a bit of damage

Make a warrior. Best for pugs, dps, and everything

Just finished leveling my engineer and the easiest way I found to level was going all into power gear and using a bomb kit. Bomb #4 makes you practically invincible to all open world mobs and then all you have to do is roll your face on the keyboard a few times and collect your loot bags. Works well even in the story missions.

When I roam with my thief friend I find the hardest part is keeping up with them. They’re so kitten fast that I feel like I’m holding them back when I play on my guardian or mesmer. I recently leveled an engineer and speedy kits makes a huge difference. My friend and I zoom around the map in no time. I highly recommend a tanky-condition engi or like others have said the FOTM hammer warrior. Both would compliment a backstab thief well and both have the mobility to keep up with one.

P.S. Engineer is a hard class to master but very rewarding

Make your human a war or something. Asurans are perfect for engineering. Our abnormally high level of intelligence makes us the perfect fit and we outsmart our enemies with our crafty weapons.

I feel like this thread has gotten a bit off topic but I thought I’d offer my 2cents. When I roam it’s me against the world. I don’t expect to be in any fair encounters so try to be as prepared as possible. Also the -cond. dur. food is a must in this meta we’re stuck in

I love my guardian but I’d recommend warrior. Not only are they great in a zerg but they also roam a lot more effectively than a guardian. Guardians can roam just the mobility of a warrior is definitely higher. But both of them are excellent choices for WvW

Seems like you’re interested in WvW and for a guardian I highly recommend grabbing soldiers from hotw. Guardians are front line pushers in WvW and PVT armor is the best thing for us. Even for small team stuff you can slot in ruby orbs (cheap route, definitely better options) and use zerk trinkets. You’ll have plenty of survivability and also will deal a good chunk of damage

OP, since you specifically mentioned dungeons, just slap on zerker gear and run whatever spec you want. Nobody is going to notice/care what traits you have on. I leave AH on when I do dungeons on my guardian because I use it in wvw zergs and am too lazy to respec. At worst, alpha dies 30 seconds slower. Nobody cares.

^This. You only really need max dps for cof and stuff like that. Just make sure you aren’t doing dungeons in clerics or PVT

I haven’t touched my mesmer for a bit but last time I did I ran a phantasm build and I was wondering what exactly is the current Mesmer meta? Tbh the weapons you like using in PvE are probably going to be your best bet in WvW. For zergs and such though, a hammer is always a fine choice because you have a blast finisher on a very low cooldown.

Yeah thieves are annoying but honestly they are still beatable. I’ve taken them down numerous times on both my guardian and my mesmer. Also most solo roaming thieves are running solo so by finding a decent guild for wvw helps a lot because a group of thieves deters about 95% of thieves.

Great post btw OP. Thieves definitely have their role and cutting off reinforcements to a zerg helps a lot more than people think!

Of course you can. If you provided us with your build we might be able to “optimize” it but in most cases GS/staff is extremely viable for both PvE and WvW. For WvW specifically, you can “tag” a lot of enemies by running with the zerg and pressing 1 on the staff. You also get Empower which allows to you help the zerg might up before a clash. The symbol 3 also keeps swiftness up for yourself and a group. Tbh almost any weapon combination works for guardians.

For WvW I personally feel that meditations builds are superior when roaming but AH is better for zerging. So depending on what I’m doing I switch between the 2. There are builds that while might not be “optimal” they allow you to switch between the 2 builds with just a few clicks.

I used to hate shattering as well so I went phantasms. Then I decided to give a full blown shatter build a chance and I haven’t turned back since. Gotten to the point where I’ve mapped my mouse with shatter buttons to make my combos even more efficient. That and phantasms got boring -_-

I have a guardian and a mesmer and I definitely prefer roaming on my guardian even though the mesmer is seen as the “dueling class”. Guardian brings more survivability and group support. And I can pump out some pretty good damage.

I like to use a GS with sigil of fire when I zerg. The fire aoe is great and has a lot of chances to proc due to the gs auto attack and iZerker crits.

Asura. Nothing beats being a tiny ball of plague and death!

One option is to use Soldier runes. But in your build you use meditations in which case smite condition works just fine and sets up a nice fire field for might blasts

I like to go an AH build with shouts for zerg groups and meditations for small groups. So the build I use that lets me accommodate both is http://tinyurl.com/mdxah4e

Just swap out the traits and skills for when you go meditations. This way you don’t have to retrait each time. I also like knights/soldiers armor with zerk weapons. May not be the most maximized build but it allows me to play with little downtime between zerging and flipping camps.

For your wvw group which would you rather have: an Elementalist or Necromancer? Thinking of an aoe focused class and have pretty much narrowed it down to these 2 or a grenade engineer.

I personally really like the AC sword of Foefire’s Essence. The blue glow works really well with the whole guardian theme.

It’s an important topic. And it is important to play this way. Good that 10 vs 1 = 40 wxp each. Easier to get wxp which is important. And if they changed it people would look for other ways to farm wxp.

I did not want the ranks. I do not need the PvE x WvW mix(map completion, badges for legendaries on the WvW map). Also I do not need the PvE equip – I would be fine if they made it a bit more like sPvP…

Remove the wxp rank. Give everyone access to free euip and a WvW armor set. Free siege blueprints(only costing supplies from the camps). Everyone at level 80. Real level like sPvP. Not upscaled.

All problems would be solved. Only problem: A lot of people will whine cause they can’t farm newbies with their ascended gear. The people want this. They wanted ranks and stuff and wvw skills.

And while this in the game of course a lot want to farm. I myself also want badges… I don’t play PvE much and the badges help me to get a kitteneaper gear(instead of 2-3 gold per exo buying with badges + 80,90 silver). Event farming for silver and tagging a lot of players in zerg fights for badges is a good way… and needed so I can get better equip I need because all the others have their ascended from PvE fractals farming and come to WvW to kill others with lower gear.

For WvW and some dungeons it’s nice to have a little more hp as well so I chose a mix of knights/zerker gear with soldier runes. Then zerker trinkets. I run a 0/5/30/30/5 build and I find I do good dps without sacrificing survivability.

I personally love this tier. Enough zerg to have some good sized fights but not enough to make it the only viable strategy, especially on the BL’s.
