I understood what he was saying, but couldn’t help but chuckle throughout most of it (or what I read, it skips around the points on something that can be said in a single sentence). You’re trying, we get it. But saying you aren’t one for excuses and then saying you’ve been busy is frankly laughable. The only people who aren’t busy are the < 18 crowd and people with no need to work for a living. I know you guys can’t be frank with us and just give a direct answer in fear of driving off the community (which I’ve seen obliterate game communities in the past), but the whole twinkie on the end of a fishing pole attempt to keep us playing is beginning to wear us down. Either communicate (Don’t most large companies have some sort of community manager(s)? Why do I never see them?) or demonstrate capability. I think that’s all most of us ask.

Yeah, I always found it a very slow counterattack, giving many attacks 1 – 3 hits on you before you swing. Hell, a mobile opponent can dodge the counter attack by simply backing up.

LB #1 – Damage reduction with range removed. Base damage stays at 1000+ level.

All auto attacks will have their power scaling increased by 20%. (Especially if this pertains to longbow as well.)

Protect Me- Changed to, for 6 seconds, all damage you would take is redirected to your pet. That damage is reduced by 50%. Breaks stuns. (Pet no longer stops attacking during the duration of the skill.) (Kind of makes Signet of Stone worthless.)

Guard – Casting time removed. Changed to, you and your pet gain protection for 6s and stability for 6s. Recharge increased to 25 seconds. Breaks stuns. (If traited this is a 20s cd 6s stability and protection. That’s pretty strong.)

Primal reflexes – Changed to, You gain 10 seconds of vigor when hit by a critical hit. 20s ICD (50% vigor up time potentially from a single trait.)

Vigorous Renewal – No longer pulses with healing spring. Vigor granted increased to 10s. (If you use Troll Unguent or Heal as One this will give you crazy vigor up time.)

Mighty Swap – Changed to, grants 3 stacks of might for 10s to you, your pet, and nearby allies when swapping pets.
Stability training – Changed to, grants 4 seconds of stability to you, your pet, and nearby allies when swapping pets.
Vigorous Training – Changed to, grants 8 seconds of vigor to you, your pet, and nearby allies when swapping pets.
(All of these are crazy strong. Remember this has a potential 16s cd, which would mean 50% up time on vigor, 25% on stability, and 62.5% on 3 stacks of might.)

I’m not saying change you list, just that I find these would be highly unlikely and are very much high hopes.

What is the purpose of the current pet stow?

in Ranger

Indoles.1467

I use it often (like jubskie said) in WvW to conceal my pet. I have been told and can see that it adds a bit of a fear factor to the ranger when an enemy sees you without a pet. If they see a spider for instance, they can plan accordingly, but if they can’t see anything they guess 1 of 2 things. A ) Your pet is currently invisible and will come out of stealth soon (Jaguar or Guard). B ) You are hiding your pet for a tactical advantage.

And they did make pets aggro mobs again in a previous patch as it was exploited in WvW to attack people inside camps while the NPCs didn’t do anything. I also use the stow feature almost all the time for PvE so that while running through content I don’t get drawn in combat.

Successfully killing the pet right after the skill casts will effectively stop it from taking place. It’s not gonna happen very often, but there you go.

But if the pet is already dead, it gets a full heal.

To op, the main thing I try to do is save your interrupt for about a second after the pet stops beside the ranger. Cast it so that it hits at about that time and try to dps the rest of the ranger’s heath before the heal can come into play. It’s your only real shot.

On the bright side by using guard you have a 12s condi cleanse

Pretty amazing the amount of effort we have to put in to get one of those.

I see what you’re getting at and I understand your concern. I can’t say whether or not your concern is valid. It makes more sense to me now, but my position hasn’t swayed. Will a permanent stow feature be an excuse for them to shovel pet fixes off to the side for now? Maybe, but here is where our views differ. You are afraid this will be true while I feel that the perma stow feature is a simple addition that shouldn’t shift the time frame of any actual changes scheduled for pets. So, I’m basically asking for a band-aid fix here because I’ve been bleeding for too long and I’m near death (referring to playing ranger, especially in pve).

I don’t see how you think they are actively working on it. Maybe you are more connected than any of us and know some information that we don’t, but we’ve all seen the pet health buff before. You know what it changes? Nothing. It’s a band-aid fix so that we think our pets are more useful. Our pets lack the mechanics that determine success in this game and that is evading damage and proper skill usage.

Anet has said themselves that they don’t want to give the ranger more control over his/her pets because it would be too confusing for new players (but I think there are more hidden reasons they won’t say). They also have said that giving the pet an evade on ranger evade was a bit op (but never specified if it was actually tested or theory crafted and threw in our face). So, we already know nothing is coming except some crappy hp buff (again) and maybe some skill changes. What most of us want is more control and better response out of the pet, not more health. Giving something more health doesn’t give me the impression that they are actively working on it as those are simply some values that can be changed rapidly on the spot.

Now I will mention there was a time when us rangers had hope. The pet patches way back that decreased f2 cast times and improved pet ai so melee pets hit more often. But it has been a long time since then and I feel that their focus is elsewhere (pushing the meta away from condi is pretty big on their list). I want to see improvements too, but in the meantime, perma stow please.

I’ll make it simple for you SynfulChaot. We want the pet gone because after a year and no real changes to how it works, we have lost hope in any real improvements and would like the option to simple put the pet away for a while when it has no purpose or is a detriment to ourselves. It should be much easier for them to add a permanent stow feature than it would be to create new mechanics for the pet. Therefore, this is an easy solution to a problem many of us share. It is an improvement for us, just not one you comprehend.

Hard to say because the last trait in Nature Magic, Nature’s Voice, applies boons to allies within 360 units. It probably needs some testing but nobody cares about it because like you pointed out, ranger shouts don’t affect allies (without the trait) and have fairly long cooldowns outside of Guard, which is fairly useless in itself anyway.

What Ryan said is accurate. All I can really recommend is getting -40% condition duration food and hoelbrak runes which will gives you a total of -60% condition duration while still giving you some dps. You really can’t hope to beat the ranger unless he makes some serious mistakes because that is just the way the current meta works, but you can go for a draw. I know that sounds silly but his build in particular is such a counter to most guardians (like I said earlier guardian has, no poison, little cc, few conditions) that you really just can’t win. And I’ll catch some heat for this, but the ranger really shouldn’t be losing to Necros either. Then again, his build probably sacrifices too much offense for defense that doesn’t work well against Necros in particular.

You aren’t going to catch that much about the necros vs rangers thing, it’s actually a pretty even fight, depending on the build. Rangers have all the necessary tools to win out against necros, but necros also have all the necessary tools they need to overpower and beat the ranger. It’s definitely a matchup the relies more on player skill than build composition.

As for the thread, I honestly can’t add anything more, other than on my Guardian, I prefer Staff for my ranged support. Of course, I’m also running an AH build, so staff makes sense in my build.

Most experienced players know that about ranger vs necro, but the inexperienced cry, “Necro op! Fear chain! Condi burst!” and would lash out at me for even mentioning something like this with remarks about how bad the pet is or something. Staff is a viable option, I almost included it. The only issue I find with it in 1v1 is the lack of any cc outside of a 40s ward which doesn’t really count since it doesn’t help you land your other skills very much. But yeah, I think I covered just about everything a guardian can do. I should add Traveler runes as a viable option to Hoelbrak.

"Perma Regen Ranger"

Perma regen only works well against professions who lack poison and/or stuns/cc (guardian lacks both). His main strategy was to probably keep 100% weakness up time on you (axe #3 gives the pet the ability to apply a 10s weakness on next hit) while constantly dealing marginal damage and saving dagger #4 to avoid any potential burst.

What you could do with the current setup… Luckily, I play a lot of guardian, and a similar build at that (although more tanky). First, you are going to need to be careful of the axe #3. It doesn’t matter if it hits you or misses, the pet gets the buff to apply weakness (which cripples your dps horribly). When you see the weakness, you need to cleanse it if you plan to attack. Second, your mobility is trash compared to his overall. You probably will need to run multiple gap closers so then when the opportunity presents itself, you can take full advantage of it (judges intervention is probably a must). You can actually heal quite a bit if you go for a monk’s focus meditation build (which are the stronger 1v1 builds guardian has imo), so if you aren’t doing that, I would recommend it.

As for attacking, going straight in for a whirling wrath combo isn’t going to fly. Every ranger with half a brain will probably just dodge roll backwards and save their dagger evade for something more important. You need to force their hand with constant pressure and watch how many evades they blow. If you ever see them do a double dodge and dagger evade in close proximity, your time to strike is now. However, keeping this pressure won’t be easy unless you want to use scepter/x. Going double melee against a ranger is a bad idea unless you are a stunlock warrior because you simply won’t be able to hold them in place long enough to deal any significant damage.

Another thing to look out for is something I think the ranger is one of the best professions at, and that is shifting the momentum of the fight. If you dive too deep to fight one and don’t pay too much attention to his pet, you can get caught in a nasty combination of cc and condition dumping. However, you can’t dps the pet either against decent rangers because as soon as you start doing that you leave yourself incredibly vulnerable for a counter offensive from the ranger.

In summary, it is all about action and reaction when fighting a ranger. The first person to make a mistake tends to suffer for it. Be careful of his pet (stay mobile) and keep pressure on him/her while bringing enough condition cleansing so that you don’t eat long duration poisons and weaknesses.

What I mean by this is that by skipping doing Tequatl, you save yourself the potential lost time (that most of us are constrained by on when we play GW2) and effort for minimal reward and instead do something more rewarding that isn’t as frustrating.

I’m already done attempting it after the first 3 defeats. I simply don’t care about completing it nor do I care about achievements and vanity items.

Trap Longbow Rangers are the best on treb...

in Ranger

Posted by: Indoles.1467

Indoles.1467

I prefer to play as an off-bunker on home point. Preset traps in smart positions (not in front of the point!) and you have a crazy advantage with double traps. Although I have been on the treb before and do agree that you can hold it quite well assuming you know where to place the traps. Pretty similar playstyles between the two really.

And if anyone is wondering why I say don’t place traps in front of the point, there are a few reasons.
1 ) You want your opponent to be committed to the attack when they hit your traps. Placing them too far ahead and a smart opponent will simply flee for the reset.
2 ) Traps in common pathways in front of the point tend to get “accidentally” evaded far more often than you would like. People simple like to hit their dodges as they approach to avoid any cc you will likely try to use on them to slow their progress to your point, often times leading to them dodging right over your preset traps.
3 ) The only thing better than catching an unsuspecting foe in your traps is doing it twice. If your traps are nearby when the enemy gets caught you can dump them on their face again (assuming you are using traited spike trap ofc).

Props for playing a trap ranger (even though I despise the longbow), they aren’t as easy to perform well with as some people think as they require quick response times on openings and smart trap placement/timing.

Indoles.1467

I was one of those asking for bosses to be harder. I guess I got what I wanted (partially at least), but you know what, I stopped doing these world bosses months ago because the loot just isn’t worth the boredom and time spent. Sure, it technically is worth the time spent (before), but I would be so bored afterward that I would log off. Now I’ll be just as bored (probably more bored since they take longer and actually require me to do stuff as before I would alt+tab out and watch videos or something, now I have to actually do boring PvE junk) and take even longer for what, the same loot + a couple of those crappy champs bags that give me that dust I have 15 stacks of and another green.

I’m glad they are harder, but I don’t care enough to do them. PvE is dead to me in this game, and no amount of patching is going to fix it because the way PvE is designed in this game is just poor imo (every enemy is a hp sponge that hits hard with aoe).

in WvW

Posted by: Indoles.1467

Indoles.1467

No.

So I finally got a chance to play it and after 5 minutes I already hate it dreadfully. My issues with it.

1) It resets so rapidly that people just run around circle capping.
2) It pulls people away from doing the more important objectives like capturing keeps, camps, and towers.
3) It is incredibly cramped, and the quick changing environments make this feel worse.
4) We don’t need a steamroll buff in WvW. Why do you guys insist on placing a stat bonus buff where most people don’t want it.

I suggest leaving the finisher points, but rip the stat bonuses off of the buff. I would drop the amount of ruins down to 3 and have them at the corners so that if feels less cramped. Then your server need to hold 2 for the buff. I’m actually so disappointed by it I think I’ll be taking a break until the Oct 15th patch.

State of the Rangers Address

in Ranger

Posted by: Indoles.1467

Indoles.1467

I loathe the bickering and moaning that goes on in this forum, so I’ll just say a few things.

1) Our class mechanic hinders us more than anything else. Various reasons I don’t feel like delving into at the moment, but I feel that it should provide more considering how basic it is (static stats, no skill choice, weak actives, long cast times on everything, etc). Experienced rangers can make it work well for them, I’m not saying that the mechanic doesn’t function, I’m just saying it could be better. Give us more control and give us some real functionality out of them (Our drakes tail swipe should perform a blowout just like the npcs. The majority of our pets provide no cc, minimal condition application (both damage and utility), and meager damage due to fairly long aftercast animations as well as a lack of dodge mechanism (which is core to the gameplay of the professions).). We also get poorer power coefficients on our weapons because of the pet, which makes no sense, especially after the damage nerf to pets.

2) Our build diversity is dreadful. Seriously, out of all the professions I’ve played competitively, Ranger has the worst build diversity.

3) Our condition management is beyond poor. We rely almost exclusively on passive condition cleansing, which leaves us incredibly vulnerable to short length condition applications such as chill, many cripples and immobilizes, and plethora of other conditions.

I’m done.

A little off-topic, but I remember when this trait was 5 points in BM. Those were the good days when zerker ranger was possible due to quickness spam. Back to the topic, I like it how it currently works, but find it dreadfully weak as a grandmaster trait. At least with the current ranger build diversity (30 in WS required in PvP) it just isn’t worth another 30 points in BM. Something should be done to it.

Which Sigils to use.

in Ranger

Posted by: Indoles.1467

Indoles.1467

Fire seems as good a choice as any in PvE. Due to the weak power scaling, I would assume Fire and Air are greater than Force when it comes to dps with the longbow as they have their own multiplier. If you want an idea about what sigils don’t work together, I suggest going to the Heart of the Mists (PvP zone) and looking for the sigil vendor (same as weapon vendor). Any sigil listed in the same category will not work with another from the same category if they have cooldowns (unless I’m mistaken). A quick example is that the sigil of geomancy and the the sigil of energy will not both activate on weapon swap, but one of them will take priority (not sure which) and put both on cooldown.

How to counter pistol-sword thief?

Would you suggest the untraited dagger evade? I’m afraid serpent’s strike would pull me out of the circle.

I personally don’t like the untraited dagger evade, but for that case, untraited is better because it barely moves you. That’s the reason I don’t like it, I prefer heavy mobility and quick movement, which that skill lacks without the trait. Plus, when traited (and targeting foes) it seems to track much better, almost always hitting.

Back to the topic, I don’t see many s/p thieves and therefore lack experience fighting them. I mostly see p/d (perma stealth) and s/d (boon strip + mobility) as they tend to be more effective in the current meta.

Some bad advice going on in here, so I’ll clear a bit up (and catch some flak for sure). First, if he was popping in and out, he wants you to chase him off point so he can decap when you leave, so you don’t want to do that. Try and los him (you can get off point, but stay close enough so that you can quickly get back on) and evade any burst (thieves usually burst about 2-2.5s after they stealth, so if you take your time and count, you can evade properly to avoid that initial daze immob. Ping the map to signal for help because if you’re using spirits you can’t do much against him to stop him from diving and retreating. Axe 5 is a good way to get yourself killed.

TL;DR (You really should have) Your best defense against this as a spirit ranger is positioning and proper evasion timing.

Guardian Mace needs love.

in Guardian

Mace suffers from the same issue as hammer. The third auto attack chain almost never hits a target (player) because it takes too long to cast. Sure they both hit pretty hard when then land, but that is rare and the benefits aren’t even that great when they do hit (hammer actually is pretty good, but again you will rarely land it on somebody. Guardians just don’t have much cc capability outside of a few immobilizes and wards.

A benefit to the guardian profession as a whole would be to modify the Master trait Symbolic Exposure so that instead of applying meager stacks of vulnerability, it applies 1s cripples. This would give guardians that invest in this line (which is rarely invested in) some much needed soft cc and open up some more build diversity.

I just want to point out some things to some people that obviously know nothing about thieves and stealth.

  • Revealed means thieves can’t go in stealth (duh) but think of how this impacts their skills. No Shadow Refuge, no CnD + Backstab combo, no shortbow immbilize, no leap finisher or blast finisher in smoke fields, no Hide in Shadows (Well it will still heal and cleanse, but many thieves use this as an “Oh kitten” button, no blinding powder.
  • Traits such as Last Refuge, Shadow’s Embrace, Infusion of Shadow, Cloaked in Shadow, Hidden Thief, Patience, Shadow’s Rejuvenation, Descent of Shadows, Fleet Shadow, Merciful Ambush, and Instinctual Response are all heavily affected or completely nullified for the duration.

Some of these traits are core to how some more common thief builds function (d/p thieves will be heavily impacted by this). Does this mean a thief can’t just simple run and reset? No, but if they run, what’s stopping you from doing the same? My advice before even knowing anything about how it functions is simply to not cast it in the beginning of the fight. Wear the thief down a bit first and when you see them blow some long cd (shadow refuge, shadowstep, etc) then pop it once they commit to an attack. You will be surprised at how quickly they will lose mobility, condition cleansing, and escape potential once they can’t stealth.

It is extremely weak in the current condi spam and stun lock meta that rules the entire game. Ranger lacks active condition removal and stun breakers on short cooldowns and therefore can’t deal with either of these very well, especially if you don’t drop 30 in WS.

The “best” offensive build I can think of utilized a hefty amount of defensive gear (valk, knights, and/or soldiers) instead of zerker because without that extra defense, you won’t last long enough to be able to damage your foes (Which ties into my other point that I haven’t mentioned where ranger lacks escape mechanisms outside of weapon skills and has few gap closers forcing you into low mobility in combat, barring a few evades, while almost every other profession has some sort of instant 900+ range gap closer.).

Pets vs WvW Zergs

Just run Black bear and Wolf, that’s how I zerg. Keep black bear out for the long duration aoe weakness and swap to wolf for f2 when you need it. It’s about the best I’ve been able to make use of pets in zergs.

Has ArenaNet abandoned underwater combat?

I think after the first few months, the balance devs sat down and discussed whether or not to continue balancing underwater combat. Obviously, the answer became no (unless something is game breaking). Why? Well, I’ll paraphrase something one of the devs said a bit ago about splitting skills. If we split the skills in the respective areas of the game, resource wise, it will be the same as keeping up with three separate games.

Now, how does this relate to underwater combat and why we don’t see any balance there now? I believe there are two main reasons. First, the game is currently fairly poorly balanced on land and the vast majority of the player base cares considerably more about land combat versus water combat. Second, as related to my paraphrase above, creating a balanced underwater combat scene would be like creating a new game’s worth of balanced skills. This then doubles/triples if skills need to be split (see where I’m going with this?). In other words, it requires the same workload, yet is much less appreciated by the player base. Have you ever heard anyone say they quit GW2 because the underwater combat sucked? I haven’t. However, I have heard more people than I can recall tell me that they quit or took a break from GW2 due to the land combat being imbalanced or distasteful (fairly common now as many people don’t like the condi spam meta).

Just wanted to say that I would never run either of these builds. It was worth a laugh though so +1.

Settler's Gear Still Viable?

Still viable, but in the current condi spam, it isn’t as good as apoth because toughness is no defense against conditions. I’ll let others help you decide on the build as I don’t run a healing power ranger for various reasons.

Why is everyone on the ranger forum so defensive and pessimistic? Where was a providing a negative response?

I guess I need to put this into a signature under my name. All feedback I provide is strictly pvp/wvw related. I don’t pve with an optimal build because to me, that is a waste of time as this game’s pve content is so easy that any build can overcome it with relative it. I also rarely pve.

This video is simply a preview of the main (much longer) video I am making that demonstrates a rangers capabilities.

I’m willing to give advice, just ask. Build is available, but I want you to look for it (not very hard to find, I just want to see people put in effort before spamming me with, “What’s your build?”) and with that I say I won’t answer any questions asking what or where is my build. The build is subject to change (and is often changed on the spot versus certain professions). If you have any questions or critiques about the build, I’m glad to answer (although I won’t agree for the most part as I’ve fine tuned this build fairly well).

Note that the build in the link is the “optimal” build. I don’t even have that gear yet, as you can see in the video by my much lower health pool. As stated the the description, the sigils in the build aren’t correct, that website hasn’t added the newer sigils yet (and I don’t feel like using another website) so I made due with what they have posted. I would place Bursting sigils on both off-hand weapons after achieving 25 stacks of corruption (boosts condition damage immensely). With a full setup, you should be able to tick bleeds for over 155 and burns for about 900.
