Dungeon Patch Discussion 1/28

I like the concepts of this redesign. I think it was nice adding flavor to the bosses to make them more unique. However, it still feels boring to me. Fights rely on NPCs more than players, CC has become a nightmare, and what could have been really fun ideas just became tedious.

  • Every path is too reliant on NPCS!*
Why not give players control of the flaming scepters to create fire rings?
Why not give players ghost-form abilities to kill burrows and create shields during Rumbulus?
Please fix Detha who still bugs out and wont’ even start the events.
  • Too much CC!*
I remember in one of Anets posts they mentioned how players hate to lose control of their character so they wanted to limit that sort of mechanic, but my god. This entire dungeon is fear, KD, and immobilize.
The graveling scavengers are particularly brutal as stability doesn’t work and there are many more than previously. If you get hit by 1 or 2 you aren’t getting up again, and that is that.
This is also counter to Anets previous statement that skipping content is fine. When it’s impossible to walk past mobs and faster to fight than to skip, it just seems backwards to me.
  • Flavor is fun!*
That said I do like the themes of the different skelks and how they stand out now more. I was really impressed with Ghost Eater’s new blue ghostly form and I like that these mechanics we spent the dungeon unlocking (finding scepters, repairing cannons, and recruiting ghosts) actually tie into the boss fight.
  • I love the new Kholer!*
He’s essentially the same, but just a little less health and the extra mobs make for some interest.
  • I hate the new Troll!*
Fear, fear, fear, KD, massive AOEs.
The lightning is hard to avoid and bounces around too.
That said, he’s not terrible, and I can deal with this fight fine.
  • Being One Shot:*
Been said before, but in general (all dungeons, all mobs, everywhere) being one shot is not fun. The ceiling during Rumbulus is my main beef here. That skill occurs so fast you dont’ have time to get to the bubble if you’re even remotely far from Grast.

Giving players the 2 flaming scepters in path 1 would be interesting…

I would LOVE this. That would reduce the reliance on faulty AI and make the combat more about teamwork.

It’s hard to find guilds targeted towards low levels because this game has a pretty fast leveling curve. If you play 2-3 hours a day you can get to lvl 80 in a matter of two weeks or so.

You may want to just look for a guild with a mindset that you enjoy that is “noob friendly” rather than all lowbies. Good luck on your search!

I just want to say we did this as a guild (4 lvl 80’s with exotic/ascended, and 1 lvl 50 with greens/golds). We are not a bad group. This same group does lvl 30 fractals and has no problem.

This dungeon is doable, but it is way more difficult. People have said it all before, so I won’t repeat everything, but my suggestions:

- Increase Grasts’ HP pool / toughness and make him res with the party.
- chain KD on scavengers is almost impossible to recover from.
- Troll is not fun. Fear/fear/knockdown/etc, makes him a ranged-only irritating fight.
- P1 Graveling event is HARDER even without the breeders due to the new knockdown mechanic for scavengers.
- Detha STILL bugs out and refuses to start the events at all sometimes.

I wont’ run AC anymore unless I have at least two eles and a guardian for the heals/protection/ice bows.

Pros:

- Kholer is much more fun.
- Spider Queen is more interesting and fun!
- I like the CONCEPTS behind most of the new events, they are just too difficult/buggy.

I’m a guild leader, and I have to say I just feel more connected to most the players who represent all the time. There are some exceptions, but the full-time reppers tend to be more ‘into’ the guild. They talk more, join in the convos more, hang on the forums more often, etc.

I also don’t feel it’s my responsibility to whisper members who are online but not repping to see if they want to join a party when there are members who are online AND repping all the time.

I get the multiple guilds, but I don’t like them. I think they make fractured communities and the content should be designed to be more accessible by guilds of all sizes rather than members having to join guilds to do the things they want to.

I can’t and won’t say that we have profanity restrictions, as our guild is an adult guild, but since I hadn’t seen anyone reply I figured I’d shoot you an option.

Guardians of the Mists is a small-to-mid sized guild here on Jade Quarry. We have a about 55 members (usually between 5-20 online at any time). We’re very friendly and active with a Team Speak and website.

We’d be happy to have you but we’re not just looking for numbers, we’re looking for real personalities. If you’re friendly, fun, outgoing, talkative (both in guild chat and on TS preferably), and are interested in doing dungeons, FOTM, and other content, then we’d love to have you!

As I said, we are an adult guild, and there are adult conversations so our chat is not curse-free, but we are friendly and helpful! Depending on how much the profanity is a deal breaker for you, you might want to give us a try.

I would invite you to our guild, but while we are friendly and open to new players (I actually enjoy helping newbies more than playing with experienced people sometimes hehe), our guild chat does have some sexual tones in it sometimes. Most guilds with 20+ year olds are going to have some of that.

Best of luck on your search, Madeline. If you decide you want to give a small-mid sized guild a try, give me a message sometime.

Hi Scorcha. You’re obviously a weirdo for having 3 cats, because dogs are way cooler, but we’ll forgive you this time since you have great taste in games. Dragon Age was amazing. I think I played Origins through like 20 times and I still drool over Alistair every time. fangirl! ;P

Onto guild stuff! Not sure if you’ve picked one, but figured I’d let you know about us. We’re a bit bigger than your goal, 55 members or so, but we’re very close. We’re really looking for a few members like you, who are interested in being talkative active community members, not just a number in a guild. We have a website where we have contests and a Team Speak server where we have laughs.

We’re on Jade Quarry and the majority of our members are evenings, PST zone (between 4:00 PM – 2:00 AM is our busy time).

The bulk of our members are based in North America so our prime gaming hours are 5:00 PM – 2:00 AM (PST). However, we have several Asian and Oceanic members so there is almost always 3-5 people online on off hours and 15-20 during peak hours.

JNetRocks.3652

I would actually really like it if trash was non skippable, but I think there needs to be less of it in some areas for that to work and trash should have better chances at dropping better loot.

Having trash non skippable and having events all mandatory makes sure your group is on the same page. It seems like the first thing you have to do in every dungeon group with pugs is say “Are we skipping trash? Are we skipping this boss? Are we climbing the walls to run across the ceiling and avoid the entire dungeon?”

Remove all that and people just play the dungeon.

Don’t know if this problem is still being tracked, but I’m having the same issue.

Transmuted Ascalonian Gauntlets skin onto another previously transmuted piece.
The one dye slot is listed as “dye remover”.

If I add any color to the dye remover it previews the color fine. When I close the hero window the color doesn’t apply to the armor and reopening the dye still shows the slot listed as “dye remover”.

Had two crashes while trying to get it to work.

As mentioned above MF generally isn’t a issue, I run Arah with MF gear and I die the least out of the group when I’m the only one using MF gear…as a thief…in Arah.

Then you, as a good player, could potentially do more or take less damage if you were in normal stated gear. You doing more damage would take enemies down faster, thus preventing them from being alive to do damage to your party members.

JNetRocks.3652

I think people read into my post a bit more than I put in.

I have a full set of magic find gear. I have successfully completed pretty much every dungeon while wearing it without the group wiping.

The problem is that even though we did well, we would have been better/faster/etc. had I been wearing my regular stated armor. I chose to put out less damage to give myself better chances at getting money/rewards.

That’s selfish of me, doesn’t contribute to the party (just myself), and decreases my performance.

You can run in Magic Find without problems, but you shouldn’t have to.

I like this idea. Unique drops to each zone, not just mini-pets, but maybe a unique weapon skin per zone or something as well. Things could be added over time to keep all zones fresh and interesting. The drop rate would have to be low enough that people spend a pretty significant time in each zone though!

I don’t think I need to write a huge post about this… magic find is just silly. A player should never have to choose between offensive/defensive statistics and “increased chance for quality items”.

Magic find encourages players to cripple their stats, making PvE content harder. It doesn’t just affect them, it also affects their group. When I run dungeons I want to have a group that is geared for damage, control, and support, not geared for shinies.

Please remove magic find and just adjust the rarity of items appropriately.

Loot/Drops from champion and veteran mobs

in The Lost Shores

Posted by: JNetRocks.3652

JNetRocks.3652

Well…

They have already increased the drops for better quality gear substantially. I’m not sure how much you play but it is really noticable. You used to run a dungeon and get 60% white quality, 30% blue quality and 10% green quality, with maybe 1 gold drop every 3-4 dungeons (with no magic find gear). Now, with no magic find gear you get 5% white drops, 50% blue drops, 40% green drops, and 5% gold drops.

It’s really quite substantial, especially when you consider they also added money rewards to all the bosses, plus bags that give karma and money.

I do agree that champions should have a higher than average chance of giving good loot, but they can’t exactly give it guaranteed gold quality or it could be exploited pretty bad.

As far as armor appearance that is really personal preference. I think there are quite a few nice looking sets, though I don’t love them all. Some people hated WoW armor, so you will never be able to please everybody with that.

Now, where I really disagree with you is on armor stats. Guild Wars (both the original and GW2) is not about gear treadmills. They have a cap on gear stats so that the game is less about what you are wearing and more about how you are playing. You can spend time trying to get an armor set you think looks nice by running dungeons for dungeon armor, saving up money for cultural sets, or working on your crafting for one of those. Red quality (legendary items) will always be best-in-slot EQUAL to the tier beneath it (Ascended, pink items). This is to prevent people who have gotten a legendary item from having any advantage over players who haven’t. It’s a skin. It’s got wow factor, but it won’t make you hit harder, or faster, or anything like that.

I ran the new dungeon several times yesterday and I do think the money rewards could be increased a bit, but it might as you get into higher difficulty ratings (anyone gotten very far yet who has some input, feel free to chime in!). Personally I got to Difficulty level 4 and got 5-6 gold gear drops, a dozen or two rare crafting materials, and a few cores (easily 2-3 gold worth), as well as 120 tokens.

Overall, I disagree. I think that ANet has already made substantial changes to the loot system and the game is infinitely more rewarding. There could be a little tweaking for Fractals of the Mists and Champions, but the rest is fine.

Zhaitan's Motivations: story spoiler

The dragons want to consume magic, the more the better. Dragons achieve this with their minions, Zaitan’s minions are the undead. The more minions he has the more can bring magical artifacts and stuff to his mouths.

Yeah I played through the story and there is part about the Mouth of Zhaitan trying to consume the magic, etc. I wasn’t sure if there was anything deeper behind their lust for magical artifacts, etc.

Thanks for the replies guys! I’m going to go with my original thoughts – they’re just sorta pissed off for no real good reason. :P

JNetRocks.3652

i don’t know.

why did hurricane Sandy do what it did?

that’s what you’re asking.

Well… if a hurricane had minions who could speak English, sure. Zhaitan has minions who are obviously intelligent and have conversations with the PC. It seems if Zhaitan’s minions are capable of intelligence, so should Zhaitan be.

And destroying the world is pretty hefty and evil, and not really natural. Lions don’t wake up and say “LETS KILL EVERYTHING ON THE SAVANNAH” they just try to satisfied a basic need: hunger.

So what is driving Zhaitan’s desire to destroy the world? Hope that makes sense!

The shadow behemoth.

in Lore

Posted by: JNetRocks.3652

JNetRocks.3652

That swamp is where the Temple of Ages was in Guild Wars 1 – the entrance to the Underworld and a major farming area. If you talk to one of the NPCs in the swamp she says something like “Can you believe people used to go through the portal chasing treasure?”

There’s also something about all the activity in the underworld having weakened the border between the Underworld and the real world which is what causes the portals to form. I’m not sure if the Behemoth is specifically Dhuum/Grenth’s creation or anything, but it stands to reason he’s an Underworld monster.

Zhaitan and Claw Island (spoilers)

in Suggestions

Posted by: JNetRocks.3652

JNetRocks.3652

So during the game you start hearing about the elder dragons and how they are evil and want to destroy the world and what not. Yet, you never really have any type of encounter leading up to your fight with Zhaitan. He’s just some evil, supposedly incredibly intelligent force lurking in the background until you go to Orr and spank him.

My suggestion is to change the Battle of Claw Island so that it is Zhaitan himself who comes and boots you out of the keep rather than the miscellaneous undead Tequatl looking dragon. I think that letting us see Zhaitan coming to Claw Island and destroying the keep and what not would really add a sense of power and aggression to him rather than just having him napping on Orr the whole game.

In addition the battle with the nameless undead dragon during the recapturing of Claw Island could be changed to a small battle with Zhaitan where we force him away from the island. He then runs back to Orr to gather his strength and we pursue. I think it makes more sense and adds some tension to the whole fight with Zhaitan thing.

Zhaitan's Motivations: story spoiler

in Lore

Posted by: JNetRocks.3652

JNetRocks.3652

So Zhaitan is the big baddie of Guild Wars 2 but I have to say through the whole game I never felt that he was very threatening. You don’t actually get to see him until the very last step of your personal story/Arah story mode. You see plenty of his minions and some of them seem quite intelligent, speaking in full sentences and threatening to send you to oblivion and all that jazz.

So my question is: What is Zhaitan’s beef? Why is he angry/evil? Guess this goes for all of the dragons, but I just felt there was no story behind Zhaitan’s grumpiness.

I love this idea. And what would make it shine even more is if, during the repeatable quests, you get face time with your “childhood friend,” where you get to discuss current details of your personal story with them, and get their spin on the entire situation. You know, like two friends just catching up and sharing their thoughts with one another.

Exactly! Even if it was entirely through text dialogue and not voiced, I think it would make it feel like a real friendship rather than just a temporary NPC that you can forget about as soon as you get past a certain point.

Why Charr Have the Best Story *1-30 Spoilers*

in Personal Story

Posted by: JNetRocks.3652

JNetRocks.3652

I want to say I agree with the majority of feedback here. The story needs more depth. I would be fine with only 20 steps to my story if they were 20 fantastic steps. Others have gone into it in detail, so I’ll leave it at that. My biggest ‘beef’ with the story in general is that it is so segmented. At least for the humans/Orders/Pact story each one is almost completely separate from the others with little to no overlap or recall. With gate and waypoint travel it makes no sense that my human character wouldn’t return home and interact with Petra/Faren/Quinn through all of level 30-80 story. It makes no sense that once I am recruited to the Pact my Order just falls off the face of the planet.

While I think the writing quality could improve for future expansions, in order to improve what is there now, I feel that the addition of mini personal story content is needed. Mini stories don’t need to be cut scenes or voice acted, they could be just text box choices that let you explore the world a bit more.

Home Instance Importance
Available right from the first time a player enters their home instance should be a series of mini quests that let them explore the history of Destiny’s Edge, the Elder Dragons, and their relationships with the NPCs around them. The story is thrown at you in a lot of different directions and this would give players a chance to ‘get to know’ the world and add depth to the relationships that are present.

Add some repeatable quests in your home instance. Keep the Salma District clean by taking out local thugs or volunteering at the orphanage/hospital, or helping Petra and Andrew run their bar! A simple repeatable quest in your home instance would give you a reason to come back and add meaning to the area for you as well as strengthening the relationship between PC and NPC characters.

The Orders of Tyria
Choosing your Order determines a large chunk of story, but after that ‘arc’ is done, it’s like the Order just dies out. Just because the Pact has been formed doesn’t mean these Orders are standing by doing nothing. The Headquarters of your Order should offer a daily mission. You’re a trusted member who has proven yourself invaluable. You should feel that way.

Do some reconnaisance for the Order of Whispers. Scout the Orrian coastline for the Vigil. Recover an artifact for the Priory. Involve the NPCs that we’ve forged relationships with to create a stronger and more meaningful bond.

The addition of mini missions that are completely optional and just lets you explore some characters and aspects in more depth. This would
- add repeatable content for all levels
- add importance and depth to previous choices while keeping them relevant
- add continuity between branches without editing the personal story

The dialogue... oh lord, the dialogue...

in Personal Story

Posted by: JNetRocks.3652

JNetRocks.3652

I think another problem is how quickly things are forgotten.

For example, the orphanage/hospital burns down, and you never hear about it again. If a major character dies you never hear about them again. Once you leave your city you don’t ever get called back to catch up with your supposed life-long friends. Once your Orders main story is done, you don’t get called back for any extra assignments.

It feels very unrealistic that you just bounce between these sections of the story without much overlap or callback.

JNetRocks.3652

*EDIT: This post is being edited as dungeon tokens have been made account bound in a recent update! *

Suggestion: Change Karma to be account bound

Karma:

Currently, karma is earned on a per-character basis, making each individual character have it’s own separate pool to draw from. Along the leveling path karma can be spent on weapons, armor, salvaging kits, food buffs, and just-for-fun items. Over the course of a game, assuming a character participates in 80%+ encountered events and does the majority of map completion a player may expect to earn approximately 40,000-50,000 karma during one play-through of the PvE content.

At level 80 there is a selection of armor and weapons ranging from 16,000 – 42,000 karma per piece to purchase. An entire play through of the game only yields about 40,000 – 50,000. With karma being account bound, a player would need to play the game through 6 times over to earn the karma armor set.

If karma were account bound players could freely choose which character to play when they felt like a change of pace instead of being forced to play on a single character. This can make not only the game world content seem boring but the character itself. They could choose to save karma from all playing to gear up a single ‘main’ or use the karma they’ve already earned to gear up their alts.

Making karma account bound adds some much needed choice of play to the game and reduces the need for karma grinding event chains.

Personal Experience:
I have really enjoyed playing this game, so I don’t want to give the impression that I haven’t. The leveling was fantastic. Best gaming experience I’ve had in a long time! However, in Guild Wars 1 I could use my monk to farm materials/money and use that to buy gear on my mesmer or ranger. The current system is choking me and I feel like I am not even enjoying my character anymore because in order to get the items I want I have to play it exclusively. I was looking forward to trying out new classes but then I feel like I am hindering my own progression.

I sincerely hope that something can be done to make this game feel like less of a grind because I really do love the game play and world that Arena Net has created!

Overall agreement here. The prices on a lot of things seem very off.

I saved up money religiously, didn’t way point unless needed, have 90% map completion, finished the story, have AC explorable mode on farm with guildies, and have leveled two professions to 400. All that and I was sitting at about 15 gold. When I realized I didn’t even have enough money to buy ONE piece of cultural T3 I was really disheartened.

I feel like I am punished for wanting to play with friends. I go back to lower level areas to play with them and often lose more money traveling than I earn by playing with them.

It's not that I am bored @ 80, the grind is just crazy

I have to admit when I first read Arenanet’s blog post about their new dungeon tokens for armors I was under the impression you would run the dungeon and get 1 token for that dungeon which you could then go change for 1 armor piece of your choice. I figured with 6 armor pieces and like a dozen weapons that would mean maybe 10 runs for a full set of armor/weapons per dungeon. I was really excited about that.

~15 runs for a weapon and ~40 for an armor set is crazy. I love GW2, I really do. The leveling experience is one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had, but dungeon tokens/karma grinding is ridiculous.

As for Karma I don’t think it would be so bad if the rewards were better but I don’t want to sit in Orr farming events over and over and if I AM going to go back and do lower level zones I would rather do it on an alt and work on my map completion/leveling at the same time. Maybe karma could be changed to be shared between characters? That way I can play whichever character I want and not be forced to overplay one character just because I want the gear on that one.
