Suggestions & Constructive Criticism for SPvP [WIP]

in PvP

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

I agree with most, except 2) Downed State. It’s execution is rough, but its basic idea has very much a place in sPvP in my opinion. It encourages field awareness, and, in the random format, teamwork, curtails spike builds and generally slows the fights down, particularly if it’s larger than 2v2.

However, many class mechanics needlessly drag it out, foremost thieves and to a lesser extent mesmers.

I ask you, where is the fun then? Or is it fun to make yourself poor as hell for NOTHING? because you get literally nothing at WvW. No rewards!

Last I checked you don’t pay for blueprints or repairs with karma, exp, badges, general loot or crafting materials. Also maybe you shouldn’t pay that Alpha Siege golem (if it’s even needed) out of your pocket if you’re near broke. You could collect within your guild/WvW group.

Server Diplomacy System - The Thing ANet Forgot To Add

in WvW

Jamais vu.5284

No. This is a fix for one problem, but creates dozens more, not least unneeded drama. My idea I had for some time about server alliances, which turn players into neutral instead of hostile targets, was that the two lowest ranked servers automatically become neutral to each other when one side dominates by more than, say, 90%. It not only a pragmatical solution, but is also hopefully a morale boost because suddenly it doesn’t seem like 1 versus 2 anymore, but 2 versus 1.
However, because a fixed percentage could be exploited by highly organized servers, I suggest perhaps an orb-like mechanic to activate the neutral status (like running a “treaty” item or holding and defending a summit) instead, with percentage based preconditions as well. If this is implemented one could even think about turning the “neutral” into a straight-up “allied”.

I am aware ArenaNet intended such ad hoc alliances to arise naturally, but it simply does not work without some incentives to actually adhere to one.

Today, my game became unresponsive a full 100% of the time and DC’ed twice with this code (two other crashes because of general bugs). As I stated in the other thread, where my details are, it only happens in dungeons (probably only in the evening where load is greatest, but can’t confirm), so I lay-guess this is a pretty strong hint as to where the problem could be (namely, something to do with bandwidth allotted to instances).
It’s been 6 weeks since release. This is simply unacceptable.

Gold Deflation and Vendor Prices

in Black Lion Trading Co

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

I think the constant undercutting the TP adds a lot artificial deflation. It’s not so much a measure of buyers not agreeing on the “established” price, but instead people’s impatience. Undercutting should have a tax as well, increasing (for example) with the ratio of your item:supply at preceding increments. E.g. if there are ten tiny price increments (signifying severe undercutting) you’d have a fairly large tax.

Network Lag [Merged]

in Account & Technical Support

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

I almost never experience lags in the open world, sPvP or WvW, but in dungeons it becomes abysmal.
Location: Bern, Switzerland. Provider: Swisscom Server: Drakkar Lake [DE]
Especially around the 18:00-23:00 timeframe (Central European Time). Most fights are extremely laggy and disconnects average at about 2 per run.
I know this will probably not get as high a priority as the other issues some have here where they aren’t able to remain ingame at all, but for me, who mostly does only dungeons in PVE, this basically makes the game unplayable.

I, personally, would love armor that accentuated a male’s physique because I find males much, much more attractive than females

I actually find most light armor does this, but it still looks boring because ANet for reasons utterly unknown switched to the tired old “mage robes” aesthetic trope. Compare that to the dandy-esque male light designs for Mesmers in GW1, or the tribal/“revealing” look on Ritualists.

15 seconds of swiftness on a weapon is a bad idea.

in Ranger

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

Does anyone actually know a ranger that uses not a warhorn as their offhand? What about secondary weapon sets? More often than not it ends up being X/Warhorn. Everywhere except perhaps dungeons, in WvW, sPvP, general PVE, the 15s swiftness skill completely cannibalizes the other weapon choices you could make. Speed buffs are simply too useful, and in PvP downright necessity.
I don’t play necro or warrior, but I imagine the issue with their warhorn speedbuffs to be the same.
In my opinion, long-term swiftness (~6s+) shouldn’t be in the game period, or are atleast be extremely conditional, because they are so much more appealing to players than any other skill type. However, it’s even more destructive for it to be on an off-hand, because it not only cannibalizes other off-hands but also two-handers.

LFG possible improvements

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

This might sound counter-intuitive, but I think it is very important to consider not to display class and level info in a future, upgraded LFG system. It leads to homogenization of group compositions and favours certain, as more useful perceived classes/specs and fully levelled characters. While in theory this is already the case, in practice it is not feasible and common practice for a leader to just invite every “attractive” character and kick unappealing characters. In a list-based menu where the leader alone has authority to throw together their group, the currently existing element of randomness, the “impromptu” nature of Pugs could be lost.

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

I was thinking about almost the same thing the other day and I’m 100% supporting this idea. Essentially, make the player have to fulfill several mini-objectives (not necessarily shown in the event log, just by using common sense) like taking out trebuchets that only spawn if there are dozens of players at the event and which are shelling your position. Spread the players out. This would also prevent massive scaled zergs where the NPCs instantly bite it under all the nukes.

did anet play dungeons ?

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

You know OP, think for a moment. They played it, and that not only a handful times (if even that) like you, but for several years. A dungeon being challenging and even overwhelming the first few times is anything but a bad sign. It’s a great sign. What the hell do you suppose it should be to a player a year or two from now, when they know each path inside out, let alone that they’re probably fully geared? A kittening literal faceroll?
Hell, AC explorable feels like a grind to me now once I’ve done it a couple times because it’s so easy. And my character with which I’m doing it is “only” 60.

Do you think events should increase in difficulty?

in Dynamic Events

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

Hell yes, especially the “waves defeated”-type events. I can’t tell the difference between centaurs attacking a camp in Queensdale and Risen attacking an outpost in Cursed Shore.
Mobs shouldn’t scale to get more numerous as much, but instead become less vulnerable to AoE effects, either through more health/armor or by AoE buffing themselves, which of course is more effective if there is a larger number of monsters in the area.

Also a escalating or randomized difficulty for events is a pretty brilliant idea.

Suggestion: WAYPOINT FEES!

having to pay at least 1.5 silver for the shortest waypoint travel is ridiculous.

You mention that the second time, but how about you just don’t? Just walk? Given that it isn’t because of dying of course, but even then, personally, I didn’t make the experience to die that often in general PvE.
The fees, particularly for small distances, are not only meant as a gold sink but also to deter you from always porting around tiny distances, which it accomplishes in my opinion quite effectively. Generally I think the fees are acceptable.

In this image, only two people were in melee range and there were five overall. It’s much worse in a group event, but even a single player isn’t spared.
ArenaNet, this is an unveiled plea: Tone the particle effects down, particularly those of allies and possibly the player himself as well (those of enemies are more important, to detect their actions). Atleast add an option to do that. When I play melee I often see basically nothing under all the flares, and have to go by the UI and a red outline to orient myself. This not only destroys clarity, but also the visceral nature that was supposedly so central to GW2 combat. It often feels more like I’m emptying a status bar (because that is the most apparent element I see of the foe) than hitting an actual creature in the world with an actual weapon.

How am I supposed to play this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Jamais vu.5284

If they put a soft cap on how much money you can accrue with over and over grinding events and dungeons, and you recognize that point, I think maybe it’s time to get the memo that they don’t want you grinding as badly, at least not if you’re purely doing it for profit, and not the inherent fun.
Yes, cosmetic dungeon gear takes buckets of time, but this is intended to be spread over several weeks and months done at a moderate pace.

To the nay sayers: Hit 80, lvl up your crafting, try for a legendary, try to make some gold, and then get back to us.

What’s your point exactly? That the game, which released just over 3 weeks ago, hasn’t unlimited content? That you don’t have to spend most of your free time grinding dungeons to get gear that doesn’t (why exactly is kitten censored? This is ridiculous.) you? How about you log out and come back a few days or weeks later? This is the beauty of a subscription-less model.

Elementalist scepter auto attack; also echoing NPC voices

in Audio

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

The elementalist scepter auto attack vocalisation for female humans repeats with every single autoattack, unlike most other weapon/profession combinations. What I find really interesting is that ANet apparently tried to fix this in a recent patch by adding a second clip, which now gets played about 80%-90% of times but in my opinion is even more annoying.
How about the vocalisation fires only every third or fourth autoattack, and is evenly distributed between the two clips?

Also, I noticed a lot of (for example vendor) NPC voices echoing. It’s particularly noticeable if one plays with BGM off. Is this intended? IMO it detracts from the “immersion”.

[Suggestion] Introduce ranks/titles for pragmatic reasons.

in WvW

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

Now I know rank discrimination is unpopular, but hear me out.
Currently, when pugging (and I mean forming small raiding groups, not just running after a zerg), it’s very hard if not impossible to form a consensus which target to engage next, what tactics to use when PvPing, etc. Many will not listen to what the leader says and instead beeline solo to the next crossed-swords symbol on the map like slime molds go after chunks of nutrients, even if it’s strategically nonsensical, and worse, it splinters the cohesion of the group.
This problem pervades map-wide coordination per chat as well. When the zerg is hitting on a tower and in their backs an owned keep or other important position is under attack, even if one or two people point it out, it’s very hard to influence the herd mentality which is only focussed on the next best bounty. If there were a system to draw attention to what a player having spent dozens or hundreds of hours in WvW has to say, I’d think this could be remedied a bit, together with better rewards for actually upgrading and defending a keep (that doesn’t only benefit the one guild that controls it).
I’m not saying it’s advisable to slavishly follow all commands of higher ranked players, but it’s certainly valuable input.

I don’t know how many of you played Heroes’ Ascent in GW1, but there rank discrimination was pretty bad (also due to there being 15 ranks), and I wouldn’t recommend repeating the same mistakes of the HA ranks. But it was also an interesting social experiment, which confirmed that people are more willing to listen and follow to someone of higher seniority, which in turn dramatically increased effiency both in forming a team and laying down a strategy, and also in the matches themselves.
Currently, with Commanders, we already have a precedence for pragmatical WvW ranks in place, but it’s solely limited by wealth, and to my knowledge unless you actually join the squad it’s impossible to make out who is a commander.

So my suggestion is a system of seniority based on your experience in WvW. This could be done by books selling for honor badges, or points akin to glory for every participation in a WvW event. Either way you’d unlock a displayable title.
It’s preferable to keep the number low, like 3 ranks (4 with the starter rank) so as to not raise requirements for pugging too much. For zergs it wouldn’t matter anyway, so there’s that. No one would be locked out of WvW due to their rank, unlike HA or TA in GW1.
The current commander system, to unlock squads, could be kept alongside that.

Frustrations over lack of endgame

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

OP’s title is literally the only thing I can agree with (either due to differing views or lack of experience on OP’s side), and ‘frustration’ is an excessively strong word seeing as plenty of Level 80 content will be added over the next year, not to mention years. Just start an alt or put the game down for a few weeks or months, and jump in again when you feel like it. This is the true benefit of the lack of a monthly fee.
For everything else he mentioned, I’m so glad the game isn’t catering to people like him.

Teleport To Capitol Cities Should Always Be Free

Jamais vu.5284

In my opinion, only travel to Lion’s Arch should be free or lower cost to emphasize the role of the city as the official hub of Tyria.
Capital cities, not so much, because one could possibly crystallize as the inofficial hub (most likely DR) while other will be even more deserted. Also, it’s fully intended by ArenaNet that you aren’t able to just freely port to a city when you need to merch your stuff, both from a goldsink standpoint and to make the world seem more vast.

Change female heavy Arah armor back to its beta model

in Suggestions

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

I wasn’t really planning to buy this armor anytime soon, but nevertheless I’m am strongly disappointed in this move, for the most part because it follows the recent tendency of the west (especially America) to revert to more Victorian aesthetic morals and debate. Given that 7 out of 8 sets are completely tame, there are plenty of alternatives for people that were somehow offended by the Orr set. It might seem funny, but the boldness of the boob grab was a breath of fresh air.
I also have to agree, regardless of the revealing factor, the asymmetry and “broken down” look made that set, which gets lost with the painted over parts.
I hope ANet rethinks this decision. (Or adds a toggle.)

@Garenthal.1480
Because the art/fashion design of the game follows real-life. It has been, for millenia, perfectly acceptable by women to accentuate and show off part of their breasts, while the same really can’t be said for males in the same setting (workplace environment, for example).
I’m not even sure why it isn’t completely evident to you why showing bulges versus showing non-explicit parts of a breast isn’t culturally and socially (and aesthetically) the same at all. It’s like explaining why you stand with your feet, not your ears.
Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for loincloths for varieties sake. But conjuring a false equivalence isn’t helping your argument.
