Jesus christ what is this obsession with modes?
If the combat itself doesnt keep you interested, new modes will only have the “release” effect for you, after that you realise new modes dont change the combat that you didnt like in the first place.

Uh, no. Your statement isn’t exactly oozing insight. Grade F. For example a deathmatch or GvG mode would promote tactical group play (that is, most of the team present) much more strongly, versus the more common 1v1/2v2/2v1 (<last one is an inherent flaw of cap node gameplay) encounters in conquest.
The map design shakes things up further. You can’t exactly employ a semi-linear or open field map in conquest, for example.
Don’t even get me started on how objectives influence strategical decisions.

Sometimes the content itself is the reward. The journey to master it. Not some meaningless pixels you get after. Slapping on everything an optional easy mode (or hard mode) cheapens that dramatically.

Also, it’s the process of acquiring an item. If I took 100 hours in GW2 to acquire a weapon, I don’t want GW1 users to acquire a GW2 lookalike freebie for free in 1 mouse click. It’s galling.

You fail to realize that for those skins, GW1 players went out and worked for in GW1, on ANets stated promise of receiving rewards for it in GW2. This wasn’t just some free hand-out or an afterthought on ANet’s end. Players (and devs) were ever since EotN released entirely cognizant of this fact.
I know it is hard to appreciate for someone who never was immersed in that environment, but achieving the “GWAMM” title alone kept people hooked on GW1 for a long time, often years, after the last expansion for it was released and content development basically ceased save for two content arcs in 2010 and 2011.
If it wasn’t for us keeping the game alive in those intervening years, working on their GWAMM, working on their HoM, working on those GW2 rewards, who knows in what place GW2 might be now? I’m sure the hype would have been much less.

So, Wolfie, concisely you need to realize two things. 1) GW1 vets aren’t asking for new handouts, they’re merely asking for an update to an existing one, which is entirely unrelated to the new Lord Taere’s Shadow save for the the fact that the inclusion of LTS has shown that they’re willing to improve upon Fellblade’s design. This makes it just a natural request that they take a look at their previous HoM design. You’re shrill and irrational in your opposition to this.
2) You are in no place to tell GW vets that their rewards are just “free” hand-outs. They’re trophies of loyalty and hundreds of hours of dedication.

No, I’m pretty sure Ogres are former Canthans that got corrupted by dragon magic, the evidence speaks for itself.

Yes it is.
The only purchase I have ever made at the GemStore was a transfer to a more WvW oriented server.

No it isn’t. I don’t think you’re aware of what the word “monetization” connotes. It doesn’t only a price tag. Server transfers are not a WvW specific service and the prime reason they cost Gems in the first place is to discourage people constantly switching home servers, be it for WvW or PVE/sPvP reasons (the latter of which is more important in regards to regions).
To claim that transfers are a monetization strategy is insane and disingenuous. How often did you or anyone you know purchase a server transfer? The answer in your head spells out to you why you’re wrong.

Your solution basically means that a substantial amount of players always have minipets running behind them, 24/7, be in combat or in the city, in an epic fight against a massive dragon in a hellish landscape, in dungeoneering through the half-sunken ruins of a lost civilization, in a situation where we can’t have the screen cluttered up even more by dozens of minipets running about, in situations where I need to instantly be able to tell who is a ranger or necro and who isn’t.

Minipets are a party item. They are like costumes, transformation tonics or the flying broom. I don’t demand that I always automatically mount my flying broom out of combat now, do I?
Your question boils down to: Do you want to try to turn this game into a complete joke?
You say yes.

I say no. -1000.
And I’d be surprised if the devs don’t agree with me on this one.

There is no reason to suppose Anet see any connection between relative WvW figures and income. Especially since income is not subscription based.

Why then is WvW the only gamemode that isn’t monetized via the Gemstore?

We believe in WvW both as a game type and as a source of revenue. Perceived lack of resources devoted to WvW should be balanced against reasonable expectations of what can be achieved by any resources.

It’s sad seeing you say that in serious (as contrasted by, say, in a sardonic) manner. Because most every request I see is a lot more mundane and technical than you phrase, and certainly realistic within a year’s time – if WvW had adequate resources to it. No one is asking for a whole new map or other majorly upheaval changes right now. The front page sure doesn’t look like it. Though it should have been a reasonable expectation, one year ago, that there’d be a new map at least in sight by this point, before it became apparent what WvW’s status in-company is.

The main problem, and easiest fix, is the golem per map cap itself. Bring it down to something reasonable (5-10) and solve the whole problem.

You could make that cap an actual gameplay element. I.e. in addition to supplies golems need an expirable “power flux” or something to build them, and there’s only ever like 10 on the map (maybe make it that Omegas require two ). That would provide some minor objectives to underused corners of the map and give Golem-using zergs as well as defenders against said golems an additional strategic dimension.

I’m going to say no, simply because this rewards laziness and crappy teamplay. Commanders on the map should already be having people doing scouting on the map and should be sending people to scout locations before sending the zerg there.

Scouting is the most unrewarding thing to do in this game, especially if it’s stationary scouting.
You literally do not get WXP, karma/money or any other type of compensation that is so typical of MMOs.
It really does need to be made an ingame-thing for that fact alone.

I don’t want any development time to be spent on rewarding poor team organization.

You mean like not rewarding scouts ever, so that commanders have to search half an hour every time for the replacement?

Again: Why?

Because then they would have to come up with some buff that is relevant, original and balanced from scratch, when the present focus is on the orb-replacement mechanic itself. They can always do other buffs, it’s just a few lines of code, but creating a whole new way how you acquire that buff is a lot more intense. Stat boni are simply the most basic, proven method, coming up with other buffs is much harder. What would you add as the orb-replacement buff? That’s what this thread is for, to brainstorm what the bonus should be.

The ranks currently serve as a strong tell what to expect from the player. The difference between an Invader ele and a Bronze Invader ele is staggering for example. An account title simply does not have the same expressiveness, as you can be fairly experienced in WvW strategics and still be a complete noob with the class of your character. It’s an important nuance, one that also makes it a valuable PvP mechanic and not just one for RP purposes.

They could somehow combine them. Meaning, your “bronze”, “gold” (I’d still prefer if they used a less lazy denomination than precious metals), etc. ranking is inherited account wide, but your “Assaulter”, “Knight” is earned by the character. This way you’d never start completely over on the same level as a WvW newbie, but you’d still have a title progression mechanic for your character.

You’re doing one of those apples/oranges things you realize, yes? As a developer myself, I realize that there’s a difference between delivering something to a customer that has paid/is paying for a product at a certain deadline and a gaming company like ArenaNet that is effectively giving out free content when it’s ready to enhance the existing game.

You realize that this is the exact deliberate argumentative strategy behind online game microtransactions that allows the company to absolve itself of any responsibility to deliver the content the customers want?
We are paying them in expectation of certain development goals, like PVE content or WvW improvements. Unlike with products/features that are sold after the fact, as is more traditional economics, we have no influence over where that money goes.

Your ideas about added character models make all perfect sense in a world where Anet has unlimited resources.

Are Our Characters Suddenly Mute?

in Living World

Posted by: Jamais vu.5284

Jamais vu.5284

I think the cause is cost-based. Any line spoken by the player character needs to be voice ten times (5 races x 2 genders). And it is unclear to me whether all ten of the voice actors are even available, since there has been NO addition of player voicing AT ALL since the launch date.

Having said that, I would love more player character voice work, as I am especially fond of the sound of my main character’s voice (male sylvari).

This is partially true. It’s very expensive to voice the player since it costs 10x (or more in some cases, since some actors are paid above scale depending on ability, availability, etc.) for each line recorded. We also have moved away from using cinematic conversations (the two-shot close ups) which were the primary delivery system of PC VO. Outside of the painterly cinematics and PC chatter (the stuff that’s automatically triggered when you’re low on health, suffering from conditions, leveling up, etc.) we don’t have proper control of triggering PC lines. It’s a technical issue that’s partly tied to having multiple PCs in a party.

So, while we can certainly solve these technical hurdles in the future we currently don’t have support for PC lines outside of the conditions listed above. And considering the fact that PC lines are shared across all races and genders, it doesn’t leave a lot of flexibility for making each PC talk differently. We are considering other ways to let players express themselves in the game through choice (actions, unspoken conversations, etc.), though those discussions are ongoing. Will the player speak in the future? Probably, but how and where are still under debate.

Really depressing to see the questionable choice of adding 4 new player races in transition to GW2 negatively affecting the whole experience, from scraping PC voicing, to much fewer, more generic animations, to fewer dances, to fewer emotes, to fewer armors/costumes, to more clipping bugs, to cartoonification (of enemy factions) and stereotyping of the races for “recognition value” , to wholly botched aesthetics (Charr armor). etc.
Especially the 3 new races that got conjured out of thin air, just because that’s what the fantasy MMO market “demands” (or so you thought).

Thieves are actually pretty weak in WvW. They have absolutely zero survivability/function in a group fight.

I’m always one of the last men standing in ZvZ, courtesy of an insane endurace refill rate, shadowsteps, mass blinds and last but not least endless blast finishers..

The only class that is worse than the thief for WvW is the ranger. Aside from the AOE barrage skill, they don’t really have any abilities worth mentioning. And the pet dies instantly. Both ranger and thief could use a bit of a rework to make them more potent in big WvW fights.

More nonsense. That you think their barrage is a skill “worth mentioning” and not just some forgettable vanilla DPS attack for tagging loot bags with a crappy CD, and in turn fail to mention Healing Spring and Entangle, both some of the strongest ZvZ skills, speaks volumes.

I’m not German, your figure is off by 20%, and that the “other servers”™ always only win by numbers and never by their skill is a myth. A disrespectful one at that. Where’s the sportsmanship?
Do you imagine how many fights I had against your (or other non-[DE]) server where we wiped, outnumbered, the floor with you?
Do you even have any clue what kind of tactical shouting and strategizing is going on in our teamspeak the very moment as tears form in your eyes over our so-called blobbing?
Here’s what’s really happening: You see one of our larger zergs during primetime, we wipe you either because you really are outmanned and were unable to compensate for that through superior tactics, or because we had a great commander.
Then you notice the [DE] in your names and assume that it was somehow connected to that, and obviously in a way that makes the victor look bad so as to redirect any responsibility from you.
If your enemies all were asura you’d blame an asura conspiracy for your wipings instead. You’re just noticing a pattern and ascribe some nonsensical meaning to it.

This argument would work if WvW weren’t a three-sided match. It’s of no value to prevent server A from making points by capping one of your towers when your primary rival (points wise) is server B, either because server A is leading or losing by a large margin.

He already said in that it’ll be much easier for the losing server to strip it out of the winning servers hands. In fact, I think this will be one of the main purposes behind the new “orbs”, an objective for the underdog servers even if their homelands are overrun, maybe even one that could turn the tables (or atleast heighten morale).
If you just made the buff karma fluff or a minor boost to a NPCs stat nobody would care about acquiring it. It has to become significant enough to be a secondary objective of equal importance to flipping keeps, and in certain strategical situations more so.

Also could people please stop using Inception-type quotation.

All was needed to be done to the orbs was swap the Out-manned buff With the Orb buff. So many players asked for this, a completely fair solution instead of freaking out and removing them all together and yet it got completely ignored.

This is a horrible suggestion and likely stems from a lack of understanding of the implications behind both buffs.
That would make the Orb another Overgrown Grub.

I’m just saying, the name of the game is completely unrelated to GvG and has to do with something else.

Yes it is.

PLEASE DON’T IMPLEMENT STAT BUFFS or anything that is gonna give advantage to one side or the other.

If you think holding out in a tower or wiping a zerg twice is an anecdote worthy of bragging about you have a lot to learn from the upper tiers.

Do not blame the Ring of Fire for taking advantage of your exhaustion. Noone can play 24 hours a day for a whole week. If you have no players online at those times, you can not call a time-out until you do.
