You are yelling at A-Net about an issue caused by low population…and your solution, is to change the matchmaking algorithm?
It’s obvious that low population is out of Arena net’s direct control. The only way to solve the issue of low population is to incentivise players to return to PVP, which means providing one, if not all of the following
1) Changing the Meta.
2) Adding diversity in game-modes and builds
3) PVE rewards for the PVE noobers who want “more rewards”.
(edited by JusticeRetroHunter.7684)
I just want more game modes that aren’t bad.
The only issue right now is population, and we need something that isn’t “rewards” to get people who aren’t pvp nerds like me to play.
This was a 2v1. Me rezing someone who died to a burn guard, and then i died to the burn guard.
And i wasn’t determined to get the rez. I literally went to rez him for one second, and i was hit with 20 burn stacks. I backed off immediately to try and cleanse but i was taking what…10k per second? I had almost no time at all to do anything…
and lastly, no, a necro can certainly outlive cleave from most of those classes for a period of time. The most difficult…if not impossible is burn guards, full on trap guards, and staff thieves.
If you legitimately had over 20 burn stacks, you where killed by Plague Signet. Burn guard rarely gets over 16 tops.
Plague Signet’s passive draws condi from allies, so if you had it up it likely drew the burns off of the downed guy thus doubling the damage you where taking.
I’ve actually gotten over 32 stacks of burn before all because of Plague Signet’s passive.
I don’t run plague signet. I run a shoutmancer build with soldier ruins (to cleanse condi’s instantly with shouts.)
Unfortunately for me, all my shouts were on cooldown. But yes, i had 20 burns. I should have taken a screenshot really, it was that obscene. 51k damage from nothing but burns on my death meter.
Like i’ve said, i’ve played burn guard, it’s very easy to get 20 stacks on a stationary target (which would have been me in this example)
Btw don’t get me wrong, i don’t think Burn guards are overpowered. Most burn guard builds have easy counters (ele and guardian cleansing, warrior resistance, necro’s if they can cleanse or transfer fast enough, Rangers, and a few others.)
It’s just that burn application, along with a lot of other condi-burst is…well… not normalized with direct damage at all. If you have one or two cleanses (thieves have only one cleanse btw) then you are literally kittened once those run out….there is no amount of dodging, no amount of defending, no amount of protection or invulnerability that will un-kitten you from your inevitable death… and if someone comes to rez you? Big mistake… but hey balanced game right?
Burn guards just happen to be the worst offenders, with the cheesiest play-style. They have cheesy block mechanics that prevent transfers, and they basically block/invuln while their burn ticks your for 5k every second.
Under normal circumstances, if you are a necro in full shroud, with stability up, it would be ideal for you to rez.
But when your shroud gets depleted so fast by burns….
Warriors, trapper guards, thieves, necros of either condi or power, and mesmers would wipe the floor with a necro ressing like that.
Also stability in shroud isn’t much protection, some builds can just CC spam through that protection, thieves can rip it, and necros can corrupt it.
Moreover if you are determined to get that rez, you should have backed off the second the burn guard aggressed instead of trying to push a rez that was already going to fail.

You’re delusional if you don’t think burn, or any condi burst is a major problem.
I literally cant exit shroud and cast my cleanse fast enough when i get hit with 20 burn stacks because i attempted to rez someone. They stopped the rez. Okay, but now i’m punished by taking 50k damage in seconds because i attempted a rez.
Why are you trying to rez with a necro while getting aggressed? You should literally never do a unprotected rez with any kind off heavy DPS class sitting on you. Let the classes with invuls do that stuff.
Under normal circumstances, if you are a necro in full shroud, with stability up, it would be ideal for you to rez.
But when your shroud gets depleted so fast by burns….
I have to agree with Crinn. PVP has seen a lot of improvement since way back when. Of course it’s suffered from side-effects of those changes (especially HoT)
Anet have been doing a kitten ton, making the game better and better with every new LW-Episode. I’m sure they are working right now on how to make pvp better. No need to be extra sour about the state of the game at this moment.
You’re delusional if you don’t think burn, or any condi burst is a major problem.

I played burn guard for a while. It was fun seeing everyone die to 20 burn stacks, all at once. But honestly burn is a kitten mechanic and should be difficult to apply if it’s going to be so lethal. I literally face roll my keyboard and the burns pile on.
The only thing that really can contend with burn guards are auto-cleansing classes, like Ele and guardian (go figure).
There’s a couple threads on here right now that brings up this idea, and i agree. It’s a really really good idea and i hope Anet capitalize on it.
I’m hoping it doesn’t make 1v1 arena’s obsolete, but having the capability to duel in the lobby would breath so much life into the pvp scene.
ArenaNet has been doing the right things lately for PvP, improving on the overall systems and rewards, but still PvP population is dwindling. The most telling thing for this is the amount of legendary division players. I understand there are 0 ppl there in NA, and only 3-4 players in EU. Compared to the previous season where EU had around 40-50 legendary division players.
The question I’m asking is what can ANet do to fix things and the dwindling population? Mind you that these things don’t directly apply to ranked. I made a list of things in no particular order:
1. Personal goals for players outside ranked.
2. Mode diversity.
3. The learning curve, and accessibility in general.
4. Build diversity and class balance.
5. Support for teamplay.
I’m gonna play the devils advocate here, and tackle each point you’ve made with a counterpoint.
1) Personal goals. Okay so in my opinion this sounds like a nice enough idea. Add another legendary back-piece, perhaps a few pvp exclusive stuff. But let’s keep it semi real here. Will this actually help the pvp scene fundamentally? or is this just a band-aid for a larger problem? I mean compare S6 or S5 to S1 and S2. The rewards have nearly tripled since then (I actually make money in pvp now….holy kitten?) yet the population is still low. Perhaps the issue of rewards isn’t a fundamental problem, thus it should not be the first thing to be addressed.
2) Mode Diversity. I agree, 100% they need new modes. We have two modes in addition to conquest that were utter failures, and in looking into them we should analyze why they failed
- A) Deathmatch. Deathmatch mode was an utter failure. The short answer for why it failed is because the mechanics were too simple (thus boring in a sense) and there was no anti-snowball mechanic in there that prevented all out stomps. If we are gonna have a DM mode, a number of things need to be in place to prevent stomps, spawn camping, and there needs to be flavor….like buffs or w.e.
- B) Stronghold. So why did this fail? Clearly it suffers from the same symptoms as Deathmatch, except made more complex with the addition pve elements (which makes it boring, because technically you could win or lose without even encountering the enemy team). Personally i think this entire gamemode should be wiped clean, and rethought from the ground up.
So, i think we should consider a CTF based rather then DM or SH. But the gamemode needs to be well thought out and intricate. It can’t suffer the same spawn-camp/snowball problems that the other two modes encouraged. wouldn’t you agree?
3)The learning curve. Okay so it’s true, we need a tutorial area for newbies. Sounds fair. But let’s be real. Nobody used the tutorial areas all that much in GW1, and when they did it was just to test builds or farm exp or w.e. it was. The best way to learn pvp is to actually pvp with somebody. Which is why the current system they have kind of makes sense. What we don’t have is a community that encourages pvpers teaching others, which Cynz in a previous comment alludes to (enable dueling outside of arena’s in the open world). This in my opinion would be a really smart move to tighten up the community, much like WoW had.
4) Build diversity. WONT ARGUE WITH YOU HERE. I THINK WE ALL UNANIMOUSLY AGREE THAT PVP NEEDS MORE OF THIS.
5)Support for Team-play. Okay, so i have to some-what disagree. I don’t think we need tournaments (Very few people are actually good enough to get into tournaments…and look what happened to E-sports?), separate game modes or whatever to support team-play, As this will only split the population, which we end up with longer Que times. We do however need team-play back in one form or the other.
So here is my little suggestion.
- I think PVP season should be continuous, one being for solo que, the other for teamque’s. So from March to May we’ve got solo que ranked season, and from may to june we’ve got Team que ranked season. They will have their own separate leader-boards, similar to TA and RA from GW1. So we fix the following issues : No ranked downtime, and team que comes back. Now i’m not saying the Team que should be ONLY pre-made teams. It should be like standard que from S4 and previous. Just have the ability to go pre-made 5 man into ranked during Team Que season.
Let’s assume a miracle happens and someone somewhere at Anet decides to actually invest some resources in pvp:
1) definitely could use more goals, i agree. Divisions related items, skins, finishers, whatever items, FLUFF!!!! would be nice.
2) this game needs 3v3/2v2 deathmode with clean map (Courtyard was too stuffed).
3) this game needs bot mode. 5v5 match vs 5 bots. Yes, it is easy, yes it is farmable but it would teach players basics better than some NPCs saying couple lines.
4) elite specs need to go from pvp, period.
5) automated tourneys? yes, ty. Also, allow us to duel anywhere, everywhere, like in WoW (right click on player, challenge to duel; if they accept, a flag drops and dueling area is around that flag with radius of xx meters. Duelers are enemies and can attack each other unless one dies or runs out of dueling area). Big part of wow pvp community was formed through duels. As new player you would watch other duel, they would duel other players, eventually they would meet players they would want to pvp with through duels -> they formed teams and went to team pvp. In gw2 you just get thrown into team arena right away and get murdered at spawn 24/7. For seasoned pvpers like me it is not issue, if we join game for pvp we know there is learning curve and it takes time to get good, but your average Joe doesn’t want to watch how other wipe the floor with his character for 200+ matches before he could actually start compete vs other.
I agree with the dueling part. That would be hella fun. We have duel arena’s already and it is a strong community that commits to actual social interaction. So expanding on that would be a great idea.
but getting rid of elite specs? naa
I just want to point out, that you could expand way more on this idea. A quick wiki search about real ninja’s show that you could get more creative then just “jumping higher” or taking less fall damage, which every class is capable of.
————————————-
“Ninja figured prominently in legend and folklore, where they were associated with legendary abilities such as invisibility, walking on water and control over the natural elements.….Some legends include flight, shapeshifting, the ability to “split” into multiple bodies, and the summoning of animals."
Ninja’s have 3 roles in their culture, which is espionage, sabotage and assassination.
- Espionage was the chief role of the ninja. With the aid of disguises, the ninja gathered information on enemy terrain and building specifications, as well as obtaining passwords and communiques.
- Arson was the primary form of sabotage practiced by the ninja, who targeted castles and camps.
In addition to learning ninjitsu, which was the ninja martial art they :
studied survival and scouting techniques, as well as information regarding poisons and explosives.
————————————-
Personally i think walking on water is a really unique thing they could do for pve content. Poisons, explosives and control over fire is a big thing with ninja’s as well, So i’m sure you can come up with something more creative then Katana’s and ninja stars, which are pretty obvious cliche traps.
Realistically they don’t need to watch games. They just need to look at logs from games with a notable amount of reports. This drastically narrows down the manpower needed.
Right, and this makes sense. The more reports that flow in, the higher it climbs on the priority list, and the sooner the human team can analyze it to determine a proper punishment. There’s no doubt in my mind that this is not already how the system works and operates.
The only reason they would need a large amount of moderators is if they want to do real time moderation. They don’t so they don’t need that much manpower.
And this is exactly why i say it’s not feasible. The OP wants griefers to be punished, but when you need to increase punishment, you need to increase the accuracy of the report mechanics, other wise we will see a lot of “I was banned for AFKing when my computer froze,” threads.
To increase the accuracy, you need to provide improved moderation, which probably means even looking beyond logs and actually watching games…which means more man-hours…which means crappier content elsewhere in the game because we need a 20 man team analyzing pvp logs and video’s.
Are you implying that Anet doesn’t read reports, doesn’t have access to chat logs and can’t identify players sitting afk at spawn?
Your solution is to apply man-hours to solve those issues?
You know, this is just an estimate, but there are probably 100 to 200 pvp games being simultaneously played in NA+EU…10% of which probably have a potential griefer (Or higher depending on how many people actually abuse this mechanic more-so then actually reporting real griefing).
That means that every 15 minutes, 10 – 20 games, each of 10 minutes of length have to be reviewed to apply a proper punishment…that’s 2-4 hours of footage every 15 minutes, 24 hours a day.
And this is just to WATCH the games. This doesn’t include the time to read said chat logs, or analyze the situation of the supposed griefer.
So how many people do we need to do that job? You’d need 10 – 20 people, around the clock in order to not develop a back log….it’s either that, or the report team has to cut down the amount of analysis on the reports, which means less accurate punishments.
Anet is a company with around 300 people, 200 of which are working on an expansion. Does this even sound remotely feasible? Might as well ask anet to manually assign us our pvp matches instead of relying on an algorithm.
Dude, i know this will sound harsh but….
Instead of complaining, you need to realize something,
How would A-net in PRACTICE actually identify and punish griefers that don’t effect people who aren’t griefing?
If you are going to throw a thread like this around, you should have at least one competent way to deal with the problem of griefers that has no obvious loophole or exploitable mechanic.
The quality of the ranked match is mostly due to people not knowing how to play on capture points. And this is a consequence of " too easy " builds. Ask the average DH/necro/warrior player to run a build requiring you to know explicit counters, to constantly cap around and watch the map, it won’t be the same..
The system how it is seems relatively good, although a few flaws.
This is so sad, i realized this in the middle of S5. a lot of guardians and warriors that are just bad in terms of gameplay, but getting carried by their builds because it takes 2 competent players to mull through their passives.
With the new way that the Shadowstep mechanic works
Was shadowstep changed recently? I always remember it always sucking…whether it be an obstruction, line of sight, or failed due to improper terrain.
As for shadowtrap, i love it so much i usto use it in S5. Just pray they make it actually work…because kitten mesmers and their portal bullkitten.
I made a build like this a while back
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/necromancer/Barbarian-ShoutMancer/first#post6500293
Since then, like you, I’ve found that using soldier’s runes (instead of aristocracy) made for more synergy, and instant condi-clears to you and your mates.
I also ended up changing Barbarian Amulet for either Paladins, or Destroyers, depending on whether you are facing a tanky or squishy comp.
And lastly, i replaced the Curses line with soul reaping, traiting for 100% critical, and longer shroud uptime… to be honest i’m still debating whether curses, or soul reaping is better… one offer’s more condi, while the other offers more direct damage.
For me personally, i find myself surviving a very long time…as the shouts essentially re-up your shroud instantly, so i exit shroud, pop all my shouts, and boom i’m back in full shroud. I found myself winning more games on my necro than i have on my thief and ele. It’s also nice running into the fight with 25 might already stacked up.

What? You don’t think i know who Sindrener is?
Your appeal to accomplishment has nothing to do with the argument, and therefor shows you have absolutely no proper rebuttle…
Besides, just because Sind said you made sense on some forum post somewhere on a subject that has nothing to do with this subject at hand, isn’t a big deal anyway.
Your entire focus is a warrior’s job which changes based on team comp.
Sure, based on your own team comp anybodies role can change. That’s an obvious fact. If you don’t have a thief…SOMEBODY has to DPS…obviously? But really, if you are against someone with a thief, and you are playing as a warrior, filling in as a +1 role…because you think you can, the enemy thief will beat you every time, which makes you a total scrub…because you didn’t understand what warrior class was designed to do in the first place.
“People don’t let thieves do their jobs b/c they rotate/make bad decisions”
Yes that is exactly it (slow claps for you).
You people who don’t understand your roles as warriors, necros, or DH’s or w.e. make stupid kitten decisions, and stupid kitten rotations, and you blame it on thief. It’s that simple.
Problem is there are people (like me) who let the thief do their job. I don’t play the part of a roamer +1’r if I have a thief on my team. The issue arises when you let the thief do that job and they FAIL miserably at it.
I find that hard to believe. You sound exactly like the kind of guy who says he doesn’t make terrible decisions, yet you can’t even differentiate between what your role is and your class is.
So your saying GS/Mace warriors don’t have enough damage to +1 a fight?
Technically, no.
You see what i’m saying here?
No. No one see’s what you’re saying.
Abstraction is hard for you ain’ it? That’s a shame.
Matchmaking isn’t great, but that isn’t the real problem…the problem has always…ALWAYS been about balance.
class stacking is a symptom of crappy balance…such as skills that scale in effectiveness the more of that skill is on the team (cough shield of courage cough).
And like someone said earlier in the thread, the power creep essentially neutered all sense of diversity in matches…i see the same builds all the time, they’ve become too predictable and have remained so overpowered that even though people can predict each other’s moves, they will continue to use the same build because it’s just that powerful.
So your saying GS/Mace warriors don’t have enough damage to +1 a fight?
Technically, no. If you are +1ing(outnumbering) as a warrior, you are not playing to your classes strengths, and thus you are no better than a condi-venom thief…because sure they do a lot of damage… but they aren’t mobile, or spike-y or sneaky…which is what they are built to do.
Let me elaborate a little more…let’s say you do go and +1 as a warrior… So here is a scenario :
You are +1ing a 1v1 at home, to make it into a 2v1.
That means that you have 3 other players on the map, and 4 enemy players…Which means somewhere, your thief is having to 2v2, 1v1 or 3v3…unless the enemy team is superbad (which means someone bunker is holding a 2v1…meaning they are carrying the match for you.)
You see what i’m saying here? You being a +1 kittens up thieves in their roles, and pretty much any other roles that depend on teammates being in the correct places…Especially elementalists, that depend on supporting the team. Again another example, is that if you are +1ing home, and there are unfavorable match ups around the map, you might be forcing your ele to come support you at home, turning it into a 3v1…which is always a no-no on the ele…but you can see how it’s not really an ele’s fault for not wanting to die in an unfavorable.
(edited by JusticeRetroHunter.7684)
So since Azukas failed to actually respond to my counter-point, for those that are interested…
A warriors role, as well as other fighter classes, like DH, Necro, Mesmer…
1) Defend nodes
and more importantly :
2) Taking on favorable fights to make them even…That means turning 1v2’s into 2v2s… 3v2’s into 3v3’s… 0v1’s into 1v1’s etc…
Most people don’t understand this at all.
And by favorable, i’m talking about favorable matchups…for instance, an Ele/Necro vs Engi/Revenent is a bad 2v2 matchup for the Engi/Rev.
The reason you want to make fights even, is so that your +1 can actually +1 and not be forced into a 1v2, or 3v2 etc.
i assure you that 90% of pvp players that play fighter classes don’t get this concept…it’s a shame because i see it all the time… Warriors and DH’s trying to +1, when they don’t bring enough damage and it’s the key reason why most thieves actually struggle to win matches…
Because of the contributions from Sindrener, i’m positive that at least half the thieves i meet know how to thief, and stay true to their role…unfortunately, the same source of learning doesn’t exist for other classes.
Case in point, Azukas, learn and understand your role as a fighter before talking kitten. thanks.
(edited by JusticeRetroHunter.7684)
So angry you don’t even read my posts. I’ve literally stated my class many times over.
Nobody here is asking about what class you play… I’m asking you, what your role is as a warrior…because you seem to know so much about a thief’s role, when you probably don’t even know your own.
SO…come on, lets here what you think it is, so i can quickly get to the bottom of your misplaced “advise” towards the thieves here.
Flame me all you want, and criticize me…idc b/c I’m right and you know it.
I’m sorry dude, but you are full of it.
I bet you any money, that you don’t even understand your own role as a warrior, or w.e it is that you play. I’d really like to hear it so that i can full on embarrass you right now.
Based on what Ario said, he sounds like a decent thief to me. He understands his role, which is to +1 against favorable fights and decap.
So now lets hear it, what’s your role Mr. warrior sir?
People complaing about PI?
I died to 50k burn ticks in seconds….50 kittening k on my necro (to a burn guardian).
Yall don’t know? Sindrener is the best thief in the game.
Literally. #1 on EU.
but that’s an understatement. Watching him play is something else. If there was ever an authority for thief, he’d be the authority. I’d take his word over any other thief I’ve met.
weakening shroud does not strip boons,
Are you sure?
https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Enfeebling_Blood
That is what’s cast when you enter shroud.
You can already maintain 25 might in fights without gimping yourself with a worthless hybrid build that has no boon strip, in a boon meta.
I’m sorry but imo this build is bad, and anyone ive seen running anything like it in ranked pvp has met a gravedigger good time.
Your build revolves around might and lifeforce, but you didn’t take soul reaping, so you lose out on the huge amounts of might shroud will give, for mediocre condi pressure, and a loss of ranged pressure. Might as well just take Axe, which fairs way better than dagger in duels.
No boonstrip? it’s got :
Spiteful spirit and Weakening shroud on Shroud trigger every 10 seconds.
Shroud 2 removes boons
Chill of death proc on 50% for 3 boons removed.
why did you chose Rune of Aristocracy? Strength isn’t better? if you chose it for the 3 might of the heal you did bad, because you lose 175 power and a 5% of direct damage to obtain 90 and 3% LF, a really poor exchange.
Aristocracy and Strength are on the same level, and are even interchangeable. I find the extra condition damage to be more potent then the extra power. What’s important is the Might duration (In which both Strength and Aristocracy have). Without it the might trickles away to fast before you get to utilize it. In addition, those 3 stacks of might on Aristocracy is akin to having 180+ stats, rather then 90.
It can work if you have full life force before entering the fight, but with blighter’s boon if you active all your skills you’ll obtain a good amount of lf to start (max of 20%?), but not enough to last and make your combos into a team fight before get stripped out of shroud.
When you use this combo : Precast Locust Swarm, follow with Chilled to the Bone (using Rise + You are all Weaklings at the same time) , then entering shroud you will have almost 100% Life force fighting 5 bodies. The LF gain on this build is pretty ludicrous.
It’s more like 20-30% LF when fighting only 1 body rather then 5. But it’s a team fighting build so as long as your shouts are hitting bodies, it shouldn’t be that difficult.
That build can be a good burst build, but still will never make you facetank anyone, still if you have 30k hp (but yes, that help). In this meta survive who have more invulnerability, not more hp.
Ya, necros don’t have any invulns or blocks…so what else can we do but stack up the HP ¯\(?)/¯
I’ve been theory-crafting builds for necromancer (Spvp)…my goal was to make a necro that could facetank with or without an ele, and i ended up making this.
The idea is that the Barbarian set gives you Vitality and precision, facilitating strong, passive defense (32k HP,21k shroud ain’t all that bad). The shouts, as well as a couple traits on your build are used to give you an instant 25 stacks of might, which makes you a pseudo cele ele, by having every stat set.
The idea is you head in, cast your shouts and Blood is power, which will give you a decent chunk of Death shroud…at this point you should already have near 25 might stacks, go into death shroud, execute your spike and try to stay in shroud as long as you can. when you exit, you should be at full health if you weren’t before, and you start all over again (cast shouts, enter shroud).
The build also happens to be a procmancer build, so swapping into shroud will proc geo-hydro-weakening shroud and spiteful spirit. It also has chill stacking so vulnerability stacks pretty fast.
If you find the enemy team has a tanky comp, you can swap out Barbarian’s for Destroyers, zerkers or Demolisher.
If you prefer condi damage over power, you can use Vipers or Rabid, and scepter to replace dagger. The way the build is set up, when you drop an ice field, you’d have both 12 stacks of bleed and 12+ stacks of poison with your spin to win combo.
(edited by JusticeRetroHunter.7684)
I play the same build in Pve (Perma condi evade with sigil of stamina)
Lord is it amazing… I don’t see why you’d want to switch haha.
For SPVP i use a P/P build. It’s a variant of the D/P meta build…same everything except you’re using PP instead. I swap blinding powder for shadow trap though, i find it very useful for sneaky decapping…which makes up for the lack of stealth in the build.
Critical Error In Divinities Reach
in Account & Technical Support
Posted by: JusticeRetroHunter.7684
I’ve been getting the same critical errors lately, mainly in Fractal of the Mists(Cliffside Fractal) , Silver-wastes (Breach and Vinewrath), and now the most recent, in Divinities Reach.
It’s gotten to the point now where i can’t log in to my character anymore, since it just instantly gives me a critical error (In Divinities Reach)
It has something to do with not being able to load a “prop that doesn’t exist.” My game is pretty smooth, i don’t have the best computer, but i’m able to play at around 15 – 30 FPS on fairly regular settings.
What can i do to fix this! Please someone help. Here are the error logs. I redacted some of my personal info.
