So I just read about the upcoming (July 9th) patch and apparently there are going to be even more new backpieces. While that’s all well and good, I play a flamethrower engineer currently, and that gawd awful flame tank is covering up my jetpack. Please fix this, give engineer’s a tickbox or something, so we can hide those awful hobosacks.
I really think a tickbox and a boon icon would be the best solution.
I was running an all turret build before the patch. Had to drop it after the patch though. Like Penguin said, they are bugged to hell right now.
Funny, I was thinking about the same thing today. Why they would put a food/rune combo into the game that basically negates the damage of any condition heavy class is beyond me. Between melandru runes and that BS lemongrass poultry soup, you are looking at -65%(?) condition duration. Which means if you want to counter that, you will need to go 30 points into a condi duration trait line, equip giver’s weapons, AND use condi duration runes/food if you want your conditions to be effective. But if you do that, your condition damage is going to suffer and they will probably most likely outheal your damage. Oh, and you’re still doing crappy damage to siege weapons.

Love the new rocket boots, even though the animation is ridiculous..
I can see a boon icon working. Although ele’s still have the glowing auras around their wrists that also indicate their attunement (barely noticable when you’re in the heat of a battle though).
If those leaked notes are true, I’ll probably drop hair trigger and pick up sitting duck, along with the new GM trait modified ammunition, for the damage increase per condition.
I like the idea of turrets. Would you recommend knight’s gear? or mix of zerker/knights or something?
Yeah, expecting more nerfs for us. On the bright side, looks like we are finally getting some cool engineer looking gear
I’m familiar with the SD build. It’s got great damage and all, but i’m looking for a less glassy rifle build for roaming in WvW. I would prefer to use my rifle as much as possible, as I don’t like staying in kits.
Thought i’d finally post my engie after lurkin around here for a while. Took me a while to find a color scheme I liked.
Hey, congrats on quip! Looks like you are in the same predicament as I was. I wanted to display my jetpack as much as possible (no kits). The build i’m running with in WvW right now uses P/S and all turrets. It has decent condition damage, around 2k toughness, good uptime on protection, and lots of control (overcharging turrets). I made this build specifically to counter thieves, but it works good on almost everybody i come across. The only class you will have trouble with using this build is mesmers, as the turrets will target the clones. Here’s what the traits/gear look like:
10 explosives – incendiary powder
30 firearms – hair trigger, rifled barrels, coated bullets
30 inventions – protective shield, reinforced shield, metal plating
Heal/utilities: Healing turret, net turret, thumper turret, rocket turret
Elite: supply crate
Helmet: Rabid (precision/toughness/cond damage)
Shoulders: Carrion (power/vitality/cond damage)
Coat: Rabid
Gloves: Carrion
Boots: Rabid
Weapons: Giver’s pearl handcannon (Condition duration), Giver’s pearl shell
Trinkets: Ascended rabid (or exotic rabid if you can’t get ascended yet)
Runes: 6x runes of the earth
Food (optional): Veggie pizzas/rare veggie pizzas
Laurels + influence or laurels + T6 mats seems like a good choice to me. More ways to get laurels = good in my book!
As someone who plays every class, and sometimes loses to thieves, I still will never understand why people are so kittening hung-up on stealth.
Thieves are one of the squishiest classes with one of the lowest HP pools, I have always seen stealth as the only thing that saves them as a class.
I do see what the OP is saying about the fatigue thing, that is an interesting idea as c/d and/or D/P thieves can be annoying…But I find 9 times out of 10 people are just unwilling to walk away from a fight, if I see a perma-stealth thief I try to kill it, then if I don’t I usually just walk away.
Every once in a while there is one holed up in a keep or tower, and that is a pain but not impossible to stop….People in general just need to stop coming on here trying to get every class nerfed to hell just because they don’t like countering them.
Learn to walk away from a fight every once in a while, and let the noob perma-stealth thieves do what they are good at (being useless in general). If you chase them for 20 minutes, then you have allowed them to troll you to hell.
This. this. this. this. Alot of times people will get distracted from the objectives in WvW, and run 10 miles chasing that one thief that managed to get away from your group. You are walking right into his trap if you do that. If you are still dead set on killing the thief, really all you have to do is stand in the smoke field when they pop blackpowder. The thief will get revealed when he trys to HS through the field and hits you. I used this tactic when i was dueling another pstealth thief, as it was obvious the winner would be the one who could get the other revealed first.
This happened to me yesterday when i was fighting a thief in WvW. Overcharged shot failed to pop 3 times in a row cause the thief was right in my face. Annoyed the hell out of me.
Yes please. I would like to be able to see my totally awesome jetpack, but instead i’m stuck with this hobosack.
I take Elixir B for the awesome buffs, Elixir R for the toolbelt skill (resurrect party members) and the grenade kit (+grenadier trait) for easy vulnerability stacking. I think this is a good setup for dungeons, although i used to run a VERY tanky build before i switched. I had around 3.4k armor, 30k HP, 2 blocks, an invulnerable skill, and almost constant uptime on protection. I could pretty much facetank anything while the rest of my party dished out damage, and if one of them went down, it was no problem for me to get them up. Anyway, i think all in all it comes down to this: What EXACTLY do you want to do for your party?
Name: Doctor Dieselpunk
Profession: Engineer
Traited: Grenadier/Elixirs
Gear: Full exotic P/T/CD
Experience: None
Timezone: gmt -5 (I’m on almost every day)
I’ve only done the story a couple of times, so i’m Looking for someone to show me the ropes in arah. Whenever i’m not in WvW i’ll be up for some arah runs (I’ve got a mic and TS.)

I guested on Sea of Sorrows and was able to find the objects i was looking for. Not saying this will work for you, but it’s worth a shot
Liking the new healing turret, Swapped elixir S out for rocket boots. You can drop healing turret, overcharge it, magnet shield, detonate turret, then rocket boots for a triple AoE heal. Although the window to do so is really small, so you have to time it right.
Seriously? a 25 second ICD on cloaking device? Totally did not see that coming….
Happening to me too. After i (finally) got the email confirmation, i was able to login for 3 seconds in lion’s arch, then bam crash to desktop.
Thank you for posting this build. I’ve been using it in WvW with great success. Hardly ever lose a 1v1 match, and if i’ve bit off more than i can chew, bomb kit and elixir S give me alot of escape options. I haven’t managed to get any 13k crits either but i’ll let you know if i do lolz
Overall, some really good changes and much needed fixes there. Perhaps a turret build is not impossible anymore!
Agree with pretty much everything you proposed here. Really like the idea of a “turret kit”. Now, imagine if they fixed deployable turrets…then implemented your ‘turret kit’ idea. We might have something there!
Totally agree with you. It really annoys me how, no matter what build i choose, i will ALWAYS be out damaged or out healed by another class. Hopefully they will at least fix and give turrets a nice buff, So they aren’t being useless and dying every 2 seconds. I really like your ideas, would be nice to see them implemented.

I already felt hipster before, everytime I found another engie in my party, (which was around 1 in 7 different parties) I would high five my fellow engie and start a conversation about our hipster profession.
What makes me feel really hipster though is that when someday when engineer get chaingun toolkits and everybody rushes to play them Ill be able to say “I played engie before it was cool”
…or so I dream lol
LOL! Yes! Chainguns and rocket launchers would really make my day
Well, i had high hopes for this patch. I really believed the engineer was going to get a nice buff and a round of trait fixes. Now? I feel like my dog died..
Guess I’ll go and level a thief…sigh
Give me an over the shoulder rocket launcher, and i will be a happy engineer.
(Something like a rocket ‘kit’?)
I believe there is a similar issue with the short fuse skill. It’s supposed to reduce the cool downs on all grenades, but ice grenade has a 20 second cool down and poison grenade has a 25 second cool down (regardless if short fuse is equipped or not).
