So someone at Arenanet looked at what’s missing from the game and said: “You know what, what we really need to do is introduce fewer ways of customizing character builds, more ways of crippling those pesky overpowered condition builds, more ways of slowing down characters, and at least one or two more effects that take away control from the player. Yeah, everybody loves those things, right?”
One of the major complaints from before even the release of the game is the sheer lack of customization of your character’s attack pattern. You wanna play with a sword? Have fun using the exact same attack sequence as everyone else for the next few years. Because Grenth forbid new players get a little confused (this attitude actually went so far beyond the extreme with NPE). But hey, at least we had another 5 skills that were completely customizable. Well, I guess that was far too confusing, so not only is the Revenant gonna be able to wield only one weapon, but their skill builds will consist of a whopping choice of selecting all of two presets. That sounds like hours and hours of fun.
Resistance and taunt actually sounded somewhat exciting when I first read that blog. I figured, “Hey, we might finally be able to do some proper crowd control and tanking.” Then I considered what happens when those effects are used against you and I became absolutely disgusted with the idea. Condition builds have already been getting the short end of the stick from the very beginning, so unless there is some major overhauling of the entire system on the horizon, I really don’t see why we need more ways of making them obsolete. And taunt is just gonna be obnoxious when used against you. I mean, no one likes losing control of their character, and I carry at least one stun break on all my characters already.
I’ve been mad about all the slowing effects ever since the so called “combat speed” was introduced to the game, which essentially made it so that every attack sustained automatically cripples the character (because adrenaline makes you slow down, obviously). And on top of that we have the actual cripple and chill, the latter being especially annoying. But I guess we need more ways of slowing down characters to a crawl. Making combat less fluent is a great idea.
I’m excited as hell about the expansion, but I sincerely hope there’s a lot of iteration left to be done, because if this is an example of things to come, I don’t really think the game is going in the right direction for me. None of it is sounding particularly fun for a veteran GW player such as myself.
(edited by Keneth.6490)
I can describe my legendary crafting experience as… meh.
They were supposed to be a long-term goal, but depend almost entirely on the amount of gold you have. Since there will always be people who can amass absurd amounts of gold, these items will quickly lose their meaning. There’s nothing legendary about a weapon if the guy who plays the TP instead of the game is cleaning his teeth with his spare Eternity next to you.
I’ve crafted a single legendary after two years and I probably won’t be crafting another one. Some of the skins are nice, but they’re not worth the investment for the most part. I have better things to do with my hard-earned gold.
Judging by the starting light armor on norn/human females, I find this statement hard to believe.
Skimpy clothing isn’t the same as no clothing.
The GW2 method allows you to use it on all characters once obtained (for trans charges, yes).
I’m fairly certain there was an NPC that could replicate any hat or outfit for a symbolic fee once you’ve unlocked it.
I do 5 wins every day and I can honestly say that I feel like punching babies afterwards every single time. It should have been 2 wins and 5 participations.
Not such a grievous error in judgement as Dragon’s Gaze, but still…
People are already running around with swords bigger than them…
I don’t think having people run around in their underwear is the vision Arenanet has for their game.
Armor has never been the defining feature in differentiating classes and I don’t expect it to be so in the future. A lot of racial armors are nice, but I hated having to pay for them with gold (“Oh hey, thanks for saving us on numerous occasions. How would you like this spiffy armor? No I don’t want your karma, empty your pockets or go away.”) and I hope we never have to repeat that again. Also, the whole exclusiveness of racial armor seems unnecessary to me. Why can’t my sylvari wear human armor? And are you honestly telling me that after becoming a grandmaster craftsman and buying the racial armor that I am unable to craft a similar or just differently-sized armor for my other characters? Yeah, that’s a load of malarkey.
I say no thanks to armor with arbitrary restrictions. It’s bad enough that it’s restricted by weight even when it makes no bloody sense.
Also, we already have blindfolds. My mesmer has been wearing one for ages.
More pants, fewer trench coats, fewer skirts, and more miniskirts for light armors.
Yeah, believe it or not, this same argument has been brought up numerous times since the release, but whoever is designing armors seems fixated on trench coats, skirts, and stuff that’s on fire (literally).
I do them quite a bit. Not for the rewards, just purely for fun and to keep my skills sharp.
Obviously, there are some that I never do at all, like Not So Secret or most of the Orr puzzles (I really wish Orr would start improving with the death of Zhaitan and turn into a less annoying and depressing region overall).
It would be nice if the rewards were better, but it’s just too easy to exploit the system with portals and shadow steps.
Things like this have been happening since the release, but the developers are too focused on developing things no one really wants (like NPE) and which only introduce further complications, instead of giving us a few solid fixpacks that would deal with issues which were pointed out as early as the betas.
They seriously need to assign a couple of guys who are resigned to fixing like one or two bugs in the existing content every single day and deliver an update every couple of weeks until the game quality is improved and consistent across all the maps and instances.
Unfortunately, I fear the expansion will only further push these “minor” issues down the priority list in favor of delivering new content. It’s depressing, really.
Why not just shunt dead players to the closest WP after a short timer? Not a forced WP use (whether free or payable), just move the body to the WP. That way, people there can either revive you, away from the battle so that you’re not interfering with the actual fight, or you can use the waypoint whose cost is now effectively minimized since you’re sitting on top of it.
I do sympathize with people who literally can’t do JPs because of medical conditions or technical difficulties (like excessive latency issues). In most cases a mesmer can help those people out when necessary.
I don’t sympathize with people who simply don’t like them at all. Jumping is an important skill in this game and everyone can learn how to do it. Yeah, the camera can be a bit wonky at times, especially in tight places, but I’ve done all the JPs with both my maximum-height norn and charr without too much trouble, plus you can always use a transmogrify potion to change into something smaller with normal walking animations if that’s your biggest gripe.
Platforming is part of the game and it’s not going anywhere.
The man is clearly in shock, possibly suffering from PTSD. Show some respect for your fellow soldiers!
But yeah, the kitten lines repeating every 10 seconds are annoying as hell.
All of the info clearly explains that masteries will progress with specific activities and will completely replace experience for level 80 characters.
If I were to wager a guess, Tomes of Knowledge (and other scrolls) will have absolutely zero effect on masteries since that would make the whole system pointless.
She was a sociopath with a conscience
There’s no such thing as a sociopath with a conscience. If you have a conscience and are acting out, you’re not a sociopath, you’re just a ponce.
She woke [Mordremoth] up early to give the world a chance.
I thought it was just Mordremoth whispering in her mind constantly, though I admit I paid little attention to the justifications introduced in S2 since it was too late to fix things at that point.
Scarlet was good enough to get many knickers in a twist so win in that respect.
We didn’t hate scarlet because she was a villain, we hated her because she was a poorly-designed character.
Because no one plays underwater and they have no idea how to fix underwater combat to make it enjoyable.
I find it somewhat annoying that I can’t at least choose the stats on most of the lvl 80 breathers, but other than that I really couldn’t care less. It’s all about the rune.
Well, zergs bottleneck the CPU, but everything else is pretty well optimized, so it’s usually between 60 and 120.
Okay, tell us what we can do to get 30g a day?
Take your pick. Dungeon runs, WvW zerging, power trading, SW farming, etc. Pretty much all endgame activities will earn you 25g+ every single day, though some may be faster than others.
Keep on topic.
It was on topic. If anything, I think acquiring commander tags should be harder, not easier, and I’ve been lobbying for that since the release. Alas, simply raising the price was not the answer since getting the tag is still trivial, but I suppose it was a logical choice of making them account bound.
Also, this is Guild Wars. You have at least 5 character slots. Use them. Just because you decided you only want to play one character doesn’t mean you should get special privileges. But since you are only playing on one toon, you should have plenty of gold left to invest into a commander’s tag.
And no, I don’t think it’s unfair older players got theirs for 100g. Not only was gold worth more in the past (a lot more at release), but those that bought more than one tag only got a refund if they had bought more than three.
I’ve never heard of such a bug, but crashes can be hard to pinpoint. I’d say the most likely scenario for the crash would be corrupted data. You could try seeing if repairing the data archive works if you hadn’t had problems in Kessex before last night.
You can get 30g a day without doing anything hard. If you don’t want to invest a tenday into getting your commander’s tag, you don’t deserve it.
Saying that “well the game is optional” or anything along those lines is not a valid counter argument.
That was not my counter argument. It was an extension of their own logic to show how pointless saying that is. Everything about the game is optional by the very definition.
Are you even reading posts or just skimming everything to act smug?
I’ve commanded Vinewrath dozens of times while I was still doing SW and I’ve always found the time to not only explain my own lane, but the mechanics and tactics of every other lane as well. If I were more lazy I could have just copy-pasted the same thing every time. It literally takes 10 seconds.
Some players prefer to experience the game firsthand before they spend their time reading wiki articles. Others are too lazy to do it altogether (it’s in our nature). I agree that everyone should learn how things in the game work, there’s no excuse for ignorance, but I’m not naive enough to think everyone is willing to do research on their own. A lot of them require a little nudge toward wiki or dulfy pages.
Be the better person and make sure everyone can participate to the best of their ability. Propagate the use of /wiki command, give concise explanations, and urge players to follow their commanders. Anyone can sling around blame after the fact.
I have never seen a run succeed without any turrets. If one side fails, you might still make it, but without any turrets, it’s not bloody likely, especially in the first phase.
I’m sorta okay with the difficulty of the event as it stands.
I’d much rather see an overhaul of other world bosses than another Tequatl update just because PUGs can actually do it consistently now.
It’s not like you have to do it.
This right here will automatically devalue your argument regardless of what else you have to say and how reasonable it is. We don’t have to play the game at all, but we do it because we want to, and we should be able to have fun doing it. If it’s not fun, or worse—if it’s counter productive (since the best way to get it is to not do what you’re supposed to be doing), it should be changed.
“You don’t have to do it,” is not an argument.
This achievement is not RNG.
I never said it was RNG, I simply proposed that wanting other people to not have achievements is the same as wanting other people not to have cool items, and such a thing is definitely not nice. If you derive your fun from other people not getting their way, then your opinion should be summarily disregarded with impunity.
I simply mentioned RNG tangentially since that’s the most common way developers implement rarity into the game, in spite of the masses screaming at them about how much we dislike such a system, and relates closely to the issue of excessive grind, which is the other most common alternative.
This achievement seems to be the worst of both though. Skill interrupting with kicks is random as hell, the achievement requires an incredible time investment, and on top of that, the reward is just horrible and no one can really be happy about it.
I am very curious to see if he has a source
He might, and it would have been helpful to post sources to put some of these arguments to rest, but he might also just have been following the multitude of opened, closed, and deleted threads which would make him informed, even if not exactly the most credible.
Odd, the only dev comment on dueling that I have seen has been something more like, “it is something we would like to implement.”
That’s true, there were a couple of comments to that effect, but open world dueling (or PvP in general) is not something they plan on doing afaik. They might introduce some sort of official 1v1 mode in sPvP or maybe even just some sort of practice duel inside the Heart of the Mists staging area, but it’s highly unlikely we’ll ever see something like that in PvE. Nor do most of us want to.
After 3 days, I got a total of 4 interrupts. It feels like someone put an extra zero on the achievement and no one cares to notice. Then by the time they do, they realize people have invested far too much effort into it and they don’t want to devalue that effort even at the expense of all the others who shouldn’t need to put in as much.
I think it’s nice that there are achievements that other people can’t complete.
Great. I bet you’re one of those people who loves RNG with super low chances so that you can have “rare” things because you have more time/gold to invest.
I hate kittens who get their rocks off on denying stuff to others. Anet needs to start seeing them for what they are and stop listening to their unreasonable wishes so that the rest of us can enjoy the game.
I pretty much agree with everything Krestfallen has said. Yeah, the fights are gimmicky, but gimmicky boss fights serve their purpose, especially if Arenanet plans on delivering the so-called “challenging group content” in HoT.
I do think they need to seriously consider adding a Hard/Heroic Mode in the future though. I mean, some of the achievements are already pretty challenging, and I certainly appreciate that, but there should be a way to play the content in a truly heroic manner (without simply buffing hit points and power of enemies). Or do the inverse and make an Easy/Story Mode that allows players to simply go through the story without worrying too much about skill, equipment, etc. which would allow them to scale up difficulty of the normal mode a bit more. Or, you know, add both. Right now, things are just sitting uncomfortably somewhere in between making sure the content is casual enough while still trying to entertain the hardcore players, and that simply doesn’t work all that well.
I think SAB, for all its faults, was a pretty good proof of concept. You had infantile mode, which let you experience all of the maps without having to deal with the harder jumping puzzles and areas, you had normal mode for those who wanted all the goodies and were willing to put the effort in, and then you had tribulation mode, which isn’t necessarily any sort of benchmark for difficulty (but it was a sort of challenge).
I’m always astounded by the people in these threads. You can easily get the 30g you need to buy 200 gems in a single day by the time you’re done with your personal story. And that’s beside the option of playing through the living story with a player who already has it unlocked (although it would be nice if everything wasn’t locked to the instance owner).
I can understand having some remorse over missed opportunities, but the amount of entitlement some people have is just mind-boggling.
You paid for the game (at a huge discount if you bought it recently) and get to enjoy it in full with a massive amount of updates and new content added since release that’s available to everyone. On top of that, you can pay a tiny fee (with in-game money!) and unlock tens of hours of additional content which you would otherwise have to pay for if it was bundled into an expansion, like it’s generally the case with every other MMO. All of that without ever having to pay a dime for subscription just so you can log in at your leisure.
The game has many flaws (many of which have persisted since the release), but come on, let’s be serious—the business model isn’t one of them.
Your percentages are incorrect. It took 55 runs to get the last 2 coat boxes for me.
You were incredibly unlucky, but I commend your persistence.
Based on the data collected from dozens of people, collectively having done hundreds of runs, the drop rate is indeed about 10%, potentially even more since a lot of the people who got their boxes quickly weren’t very vocal about it, either because they were no longer around or because they were kind enough not to rub it in. Even with the stats slightly skewed, I don’t think the actual drop rate goes above 15%.
I do agree with people in this thread though. It’s fine if you wanna add RNG to certain parts of the game, but the simple fact is that most people don’t actually enjoy RNG and it’s a really detestable way of artificially extending play time. There should always be a way of acquiring items by other means, even if those means are equally or maybe slightly more grindy as the RNG method for the average player.
Well, it’s been almost a week now, and you wanna know how may legendaries I’ve managed to kill? A big fat zero.
Last night, the Executioner spawned right on me, and I was like “Yes, finally!”, but for some reason it spawned on a level 1 Fort and I was more or less the only one there (not counting a couple of straddlers). I tanked it for a couple of minutes, waiting for other people, but ultimately there wasn’t much I could do alone and the event was gone by the time I respawned and ran back (disappeared).
So yes, this is definitely in the top 5 design blunders in the entire game as far as I’m concerned. And yes, the titles have zero value because they’re based completely on luck (which doesn’t make them any less desirable).
For now I’ve given up on trying to get the achievements. I’m still hoping Anet will come to their senses and change the mechanics. We’ve made the case against RNG-based achievements back in season 1, and they seemed to have taken it to heart until now, so this just feels like a big step back.
So I’ve finally decided to clear my achievement backlog in the Silverwastes and Living Story, and everything was going fine right up until the so called “Legendary” bosses which are supposed to spawn in the Silverwastes.
After spending the better part of the last two days there, I invariably encountered two situations:
- Either there were virtually no players on the map, and the bosses never spawned because the forts weren’t maxed out.
- There were enough players to max out the forts, but the bosses died in under a minute and there was no you could realistically get to them if you weren’t standing right next to the spawn.
I know everyone was getting tired of bosses that you have to wail on for 10 minutes and then only drop a rare or two, but when you’re doing an event in a fort where the boss is supposed to spawn and you can’t get to it fast enough even though it’s literally a few yards away, it’s bound to be a mood killer. And on top of that, the bosses might not even spawn anyway because someone thought that having the spawn be completely random was a stellar idea.
I’m not gonna stand around in one place all day, scratching my scrotum like an idiot and hope that a boss might spawn at some point. So please fix this, because the only thing legendary about these bosses is their ability to test the players’ patience.
First let me start by saying Calm Down.
I am entirely calm. I have no idea where you got the impression that I wasn’t.
Like I said, nobody is forcing u to play
And like I said, that is not an argument. It’s a kindergarten retort. It doesn’t contribute anything of value to any discussion.
Most people are completionists. So, if Anet is gonna introduce an achievement for it, people are gonna feel the need to play it. Me included.
Maybe next time give your thread a better name or make one suggesting new activities.
I agree that the title is somewhat deceptive, but unfortunately the title length is extremely limited, so I titled the thread in the way I thought would best express my dissatisfaction and attract the most readers.
If you read through any of my posts, including the original post, you’ll notice that I don’t mention anywhere that I would like the game entirely removed. I only point out its obvious flaws which would warrant drastic action. And I did in fact suggest a new activity. Well, an old activity, but it was better than this one.
So maybe next time you should read the posts instead of just the title. But I guess I can’t expect much from someone who feels that “you” is too much work to type.
The last thing a game containing Masquerade Armor needs is more mini skirts.
There’s no miniskirt in Masquerade armor.
If you want a miniskirt, there’s Acolyte armor and not all that much else (maybe Magician or Temple armor). Which is ironic because that’s the starter armor and I’m still wearing it at level 80 on multiple characters.
Yeah, not all long skirts are prudish, but that doesn’t make them any less of a long skirt.
So yeah, we need more miniskirts. At least in the light armor category.
There’s too many advantages to dueling
What exactly are the advantages of dueling? It’s a fun pastime every once in a while, but I don’t see any advantages to it. At least none that the other PvP modes don’t satisfy.
It’s more immersive if there’s pvp in pve, as long as it’s not annoying, than a complete, 100% division.
I disagree, it would completely break my immersion if there was open PvP in the game because the players cannot join any opposing factions in the game.
A complete split makes for a much more logical choice. You want to fight, you go to a place meant for fighting other players. There’s no debate here. PvE is PvE, there’s no advantage to shoving PvP in there.
I agree wholeheartedly with this thread. The rewards just aren’t exciting anymore.
Yeah, there’s crystally weapon skins and the armor that takes 36k AP to complete, but the first one quickly loses its flair (especially once you get the ones you wanted) and the second one is just depressing because it takes too long. Getting chests of random skins was at least somewhat exciting.
Ticket scraps would be nice too. Maybe a scrap every 500 points and full ticket every 5k. I don’t even think it would affect market prices much. They would likely drop a bit after such an update, but they would quickly stabilize. You can get tickets way faster by farming keys if you really want to anyway…
Agreed, villager scores should have counted for participation. There also need to be some methods of acquiring points as a courtier without directly engaging villagers, although I don’t know how to implement that without further encouraging passive gameplay.
Fear detected!
Annoyance, love. I like playing PvE without being bothered by other people or their requests to duel if it’s optional. Keep PvE and PvP separate, thank you very much.
This is the reason why I dislike Obsidian Sanctum. I know it’s in WvW, but I don’t see how being ganked by a bunch of kittens while I’m jumping makes for a fun jumping puzzle.
Too bad it doesn’t work anything like that in Lunatic Inquisition.
I’d much rather see them add an area to WvW where you can hit each-other in the face to your heart’s desire.
Having this in PvE is an annoyance…
Oh god, no! You won’t be able to make tons of money from your grinning shield?!
Say it ain’t so!
srsly
… why?
The PvE and PvP modes are separate for a reason.
As for AP, well, seems a lot of jealously about AP yet again. AP is simple, you want it go for it, you don’t then don’t..
There’s no jealousy on my part. It’s not the first achievement I’ve skipped because of unreasonable grinding that was required, and it certainly won’t be the last one.
My problem with this particular set of AP is that it ruined the experience. I guess the upside is that it painfully obviously pointed out the parts where the minigame needs to be improved.
The game needs fewer:
- long skirts
- trenchcoats
It needs more:
- miniskirts
- functional armor
That is all.
Like I said, I don’t mind if it stays. My intention was more that they remove that horrible achievement grind which was counterproductive to the whole idea of the game.
And yeah, it’s not Anet’s fault that people are lazy. But it is their fault that the game caters to lazy people. Every game aspect, especially PvP, should reward effort, not laziness.
I’m all for more games. Like I said, I’d love to see Reaper’s Rumble again next year.
The problem is uncompleted achievements. Everyone hates looking at those.
This change came out of nowhere which meant people never got the chance to complete their achievements, and now they’re just sitting there.
It was a diplomatic decision to keep the old achievement, but it wasn’t a very good one. Merging the achievements and letting them keep theirs would have been probably made more people happier, instead of rewarding some players for no real reason.
I wouldn’t mind if the game mode stays in the game next year, assuming they make some considerable improvements. But if it does, I definitely think that they shouldn’t tie 50 AP to it so carelessly, so that it doesn’t attract droves of people who only want to play it for the AP. Leave the dailies and maybe add some specific inquisition achievements, but scrap the time-consuming participation grind for AP so that people who don’t enjoy it can move on in a reasonable amount of time.
I do understand that there are people who like it. But literally everyone I’ve talked to this year agreed that it wasn’t fun at all. Anecdotal evidence, I know, it doesn’t mean much, but since the developers aren’t polling people for their opinions anymore, all they have is raw data and these posts on the forums.
Nobody is forcing u to play it.
That’s not an argument. If you don’t have anything to say on the matter then don’t say anything at all. These kindergarten retorts don’t contribute to the discussion in any way.
