Shining Blade Secrets: WTB Reset Motes

To be fair, most don’t need a reset button, but someone had to have gone through this mission and realized that most players will need at least a few tries before they succeed. It is beyond my comprehension how the very next course of action wasn’t to tell the developers that there needs to be a reset mote.

In the meantime, I found that if you progress the story to the Henge of Denravi battle, rather than simply jumping into the second mission on a replay, you can skip straight to the oath, reducing the wait time from 6 minutes to about 2 or so.

But I only figured that out after I gave up and decided to cheese with my thief. I think I need a shower now…

This mission has some of the most annoying achievements in the entire Living Story and there’s no reset button in sight. Haven’t we learned this lesson in A Crack in the Ice already? How about any of the other episodes? It’s always gotta be one step forward, two steps back.

Either don’t put obnoxiously hard achievements behind 6 godkitten minutes of unskippable cutscenes, or put a reset mote in. It’s not rocket science. We’ll wait another day for release if need be.

I’ve already wasted over an hour on absolutely nothing and if I hear that horribly pompous and overacted Shining Blade oath one more time, I’m liable to go insane…

Everything Wrong With PvP Beta Maps

right, lets add a category thats going to be used 0-2 times per year and split the small pvp population even further, although not like more than a dozen people will queue up in it

Exactly the same amount of people will queue up for it as they do now. Forcing people who don’t want to queue up for a particular map to randomly play on that map and waste their precious time only makes for a lot of angry people. Not everyone is a college student with unlimited time, some of us can’t afford to waste 15 min of our life every time someone decides to click on a different map and the roll happens to go their way.

If they want us to play the beta map, we need to be allowed to play the beta map. I don’t want to queue up to maybe play that map. No one does.

even just doing the pvp dailies with 2-3 games per day will get you all achievements in a month

While I completely agree with that sentiment, I have maybe a couple of hours to play GW2 on a good day. More on the weekends if I want to dedicate all my free time to GW2 (which I usually don’t, so it boils down the same amount). At the way things currently stand, only about half of the matches actually happen to be Coliseum, which means that literally half of my time is wasted on absolutely nothing or I’m the kitten that deserts the match because I can actually put that time to better use. Of course, there are also other things I want to be doing in GW2 besides hopelessly trying to carry the team for a pointlessly grindy achievement. There are other events happening at almost any given time and I’m a guild leader as well.

In essence, all that the current system amounts to is a whole lot of anger and frustration for everyone involved. I think reducing the amount of toxicity in the community should always take priority over getting what the devs want. They might have to extend the duration of the beta by a factor of 2 or 3 to get the same amount of data, but if the players are content, the likelihood of them providing constructive criticism increases exponentially. I was all for beta testing Capricorn, but by the time I finished all the achievements, I had literally nothing I wanted to say about the map, I just wanted to leave the whole experience behind me. Most of the people I’ve talked to shared that experience.

The whole artifact alcove needs to be shrunk by about 50% to the point where if two people start out at the bottom and one binks up, the other who walks instead should have enough time to interrupt the channel

Agreed, the way the artifacts currently work is ridiculous. Sadly, because of the current state of the game, most of the matches I played were so horribly one-sided that the artifacts didn’t make one bit of a difference either way, so I can’t tell what kind of effect this imbalance ultimately has.

Everything Wrong With PvP Beta Maps

The way ArenaNet has been approaching beta PvP maps is bad in so many ways, and I feel inclined to vent here for a bit, even if it’s all been said before and if no one of relevance decides to read this.

For one, pinning them to unranked selection ensures that an overwhelming amount of people will want to select the maps to farm their achievements, but there will, at any given time (but especially during a PvP league), also be a number of people who will want to play unranked to train for ranked matches or who are simply sick and tired of the same map. That will make both sides angry as one side wants to farm achievements but can’t and the other wants to train on ranked maps but can’t.

There either needs to be a separate category for map testing or people need to be allowed to do their achievements in unrated games. I don’t really see the point in forcing people to play rated matches anyway. If some players want to farm the achievements in hotjoin, why not let them? I know Anet wants to test the map for structured play, but I think the people who want to properly test the map and give feedback will do so either way. It’s just increasing the number of frustrated players.

Additionally, making the achievements connected to the new map “limited time” makes for even more angry people and general vitriol in the community as the players feel rushed to complete their achievements and are randomly paired will people of vastly different skill levels, people testing new builds, people not participating out of spite, etc.

The biggest point of contention here is obviously the 25 wins achievement. Something like 10 wins should be more than enough within the given span of time (which makes for about 20 games on the relevant map per player with an assumed 50/50 chance of winning). Making the achievement category permanent would also relieve a lot of the pressure, though that would obviously reduce the number of players populating those maps in the given time frame (then again, they’re only there to farm achievements, so I don’t think their “contribution” justifies the methodology).

The way I see it, the ideal solution would be to:

  • create a new category for beta testing new maps where players can queue up for specific beta maps instead of being subjected to a roll of the die,
  • potentially reduce the number of wins required for the wins achievement (having to play 50 games on average is a lot, especially during an active league),
  • alternatively, make the achievement category permanent and once the beta period for the map ends, simply add the map to standard unranked selection.

I had hoped that Coliseum would be different but it seems no lessons were learned after Capricorn, so I’m sincerely hoping that the same mistakes won’t be repeated the next time a new map comes around. Some amount of bad blood is always to be expected in a PvP community, but the current state is incredibly toxic for absolutely no reason. These aren’t difficult things to fix (though I am keenly aware that new UI features require quite a bit of work), but it kinda feels like the UX guy took a vacation after Capricorn and no one bothered to give it a second look.

Now excuse me while I go back to being angry at people for choosing the “wrong” map.

Why would that be an oversight? People who want to open them will open them for the chance to get bonus stuff like asc chests, weapon skins, etc. People who can’t be kitten d with buying keys will sell them on the TP for slightly less than their average worth.

It doesn’t make any difference in terms of liquid gold rewards…

The world didn’t end but it caused the very problem you’re complaining about.
Obviously the ones where no stats have been chosen are the best.

Items with selectable stats don’t have separate item IDs as far as I know, so it shouldn’t matter whether the stats were selected or not. Put it in the MF, spit out an attuned ring with selectable stats, just like they did with ring infusion. I honestly don’t see what the problem is aside from someone doing a half- kitten d job.

I’d rather see data on how many of them still exist. Fairly certain the numbers put the issue at the very bottom of the list.

Enough that there are plenty of people complaining about it, but it doesn’t matter if I was the only player in the game affected by it. An issue is an issue.

And to be honest it wouldnt surprise me if they couldnt fix them without them being converted into generic stat related attuned rings.

And that’s wrong how? They did the same thing for infusions and the world didn’t end. Yeah, they’d have to allow people to select new stats again, but l think we can all agree by this point that ascended rings are a dime a dozen.

Of course not, I got tons of them with tonight’s patch and I’m using them, but I actually like my old rings and I want to keep using those instead. They’re like tiny pieces of game history that no new player can get anymore. Just because alternatives exist to achieve the same goal, doesn’t mean broken things don’t need fixing.

Also, even with the update to rewards, I don’t see the rings being worth salvaging. Do you know something I don’t? You can trade all the acquired matrices for keys but it’s still an incredibly poor trade-off, except maybe for infused ones which tend to give more matrices. kitten it, now I’m thinking merching another 35 rings today might not have been the best idea.

I don’t get it. None of the bosses are particularly hard or tedious and they were a good practice run for newer runs. Not all of them have the best execution but they were sufficiently challenging for story missions while not overwhelming for the majority of players. If you’re having issues with them, this might be the wrong game for you…

I do agree that the whole “going invulnerable” business is a bit annoying at times, but at least it forces you into a different dynamic, instead of just allowing you to steamroll everything. The alternative is giving the bosses far more health or far more dangerous attacks, neither of which is a good solution, as has been demonstrated plenty of times in the past.

“the rest of the game” meaning all other parts of the game not worth your time.

Dungeons were in line before. Now they’re not. That’s why no one’s playing them.

I don’t really care if they kill off dungeons entirely, but I agree with OP, they were definitely a far less boring way of making gold than just about everything else in the game. Expecting us to bend over and say thank you for killing a part of the game that many of us enjoyed is poor form.

Ghostly Infusion.... really?

Keneth.6490

I think for most people, legendary armor at this point is just a pipe dream, unless Anet decides to come to their senses and doesn’t force us to pay an arm and a leg for each of the pieces like they’ve decided to do for precursors. Plus, we have no idea what it looks like, and while being able to select stats is nice, unless they also allow us to freely switch out runes or something, I don’t see it as being worth the investment. Unlike sigils on weapons, which are either standard across all builds or really cheap, runes are a huge part of the equipment build and generally cost a fair deal of money, so being able to switch stats is not a sufficiently good enough reason to invest into crafting a legendary armor. Maybe if it looks absolutely amazing, but with the current track record and in light of my original post, I don’t really have much trust in the design team’s ability to produce satisfying results. Especially not for medium armor.

Also, I should think the reason people would want to do raids is fun. Anet has been quite successful on that front so far, but I do expect the rewards to reflect our investment as well. They need to be more than just “unique” considering the amount of effort required to get them.

Ghostly Infusion.... really?

Keneth.6490

I was browsing through the raid merchant’s inventory today and I noticed the Ghostly Infusions, which immediately reminded me of the news post rant about the unique infusion reward that would give your character a “ghostly aura”. That was one of the things that I was kinda looking forward to when it was announced and then gradually slipped out of my mind in the coming days, so I figured that by now enough time has passed for people to get it and showcase it. I imaged it would be something like the effect you get from a Strawberry Ghost, except, you know, more awesome. It is a raid reward after all, right? I’m sure most people who were in the same situation as me can imagine my surprise and disappointment when I looked at a video of the effect and realized that it’s just some entirely unimpressive smoke-like particle effects that don’t make your character look ghostly in the slightest. I don’t know, maybe I’m missing something. Maybe the effect gets exponentially more awesome if you equip more than one, but even if that’s the case, and I find that extremely unlikely, we have a whole other problem after that, don’t we? The kitten infusions are +5 infusions, with no +7 versions or upgrades anywhere in sight. Ergo they are completely useless for high-level fractals, which Arenanet has been pushing since the expansion’s release. When a consumable worth 6c has a better effect than a high-end raid reward and you can’t even put it to good use for the stats, you gotta know that you messed up somewhere down the line.

With that in mind, can you please go back to the drawing board and give us a reward that’s actually worth our time and effort?

From what I understand now, the broken spoon simply replaces the relevant spoon as a drop if you’ve already acquired it. It should not drop if you don’t already have the spoon that you’re supposed to be getting. I’m not really sure what the point of this change was, but the broken spoon is a junk item, so there’s no longer that, “Oh, an exotic! Oh… it’s a spoon.” factor. I guess that might have been part of the reason. While this change somewhat alleviates the problem on one end, it did absolutely nothing for those unlucky sods who are unable to acquire the spoon(s) because we’re not RNG lottery winners.

That said, I think many of us are still hopeful that some of those features will eventually see the light of day, guild chat being the foremost among them.

I don’t think the task would present an insurmountable challenge (reading logs and pushing messages to the chat servers through an API is fairly basic stuff), but it is my understanding that the chat system is a pretty horrible mess considering the amount of issues it has had since the game came out, so it might be harder than it’s supposed to be.

I know Lawton is working on a whole bunch of endpoints for guilds and I’m still waiting patiently for those, but what I’ve really been interested in since before the release of the game is a way to interact with guild chat channels externally.

I’m well aware that this is a much bigger challenge than something as simple as exposing basic (static) info, but I’m just curious if it’s something that the team is looking into or intends to in the future.

Between in-game chat, TS, forums, twitter, reddit, IRC channels, and whatever else we use to communicate with each other, things have always felt a bit disconnected. Being able to interact with your guild without having to run the game would improve the growth and integration of third-party communities considerably. Of course, that extends to other forms of interaction with the game, but I’ve always felt that chat should be the first and most important step in that direction.

I’ve completed LS S02 4 times in the last two weeks and it worked fine. A friend and I got stuck inside the fence once when we rushed through it, but it’s possible to get out of the terrain object with a bit of effort.

I’ve done a fair bit of solo camp flipping, even before the supposed stealth nerf, and it’s simply not happening for me. I don’t enjoy grinding WvW for hours on end and I’m just tired of playing the kitten lottery. The people who actually enjoy this kind of pointless RNG are such a minuscule minority that I honestly can’t tell why Anet won’t take a hint after 3 years. We have all this fancy currency that we earn in every area of the game, but we can never spend it on things that are actually supposed to reflect our invested effort.

HoT is very slightly more consistent in that regard and I was really hoping for some tokens on world bosses, more stuff in relic/karma/laurel stores, and less RNG overall and I was beginning to feel hopeful when I saw Mini Gwynefyrdd at the Halloween vendor, and then I was sorely disappointed to see that there have been almost no improvements on that front everywhere else.

Still, this might be the only situation where I’ve heard people on both ends of the spectrum whining and it’s so easy to fix the issue, especially now that we have yet another WvW merchant with another new currency.

Let me preface this post with my situation: The Koutalophile collection has been part of the game for over a year now and I’ve been casually playing WvW this whole time. It’s not really my thing, but I still participate here and there. I’ve killed every single type of enemy on every single map many times over, including guards, tower bosses, keep bosses, castle bosses, random mobs, and thousands of players. In all this time, I haven’t received a single Siege Commander’s Spoon drop. Not one. I am one of those unlucky kittens who simply cannot get a break from RNG woes and I’m losing time, money, and mostly patience every time I’m fruitlessly banging my head against that wall.

Now before you saddle yourself on your high horse and tell me that the drop rate isn’t that bad and that I should just keep playing, let me say that this post isn’t just about me. Obviously, I am frustrated to the point where it’s not amusing anymore by any stretch of the imagination, but I am very well aware that some avid WvW enthusiasts have literal stacks of these spoons. I’m fairly certain that people who keep getting these spoons every time they happen to roll on the exotic drop table aren’t any more satisfied with it than me not getting one. Seeing an exotic drop should be something that you find rewarding and a 10s spoon is just a buzzkill for many.

So, to that end, if anyone at Anet comes across this thread, can you please remove the spoons from random drops that are nothing but an annoyance to both ends of the spectrum and put the spoon in the Laurel Merchant or Heroics Notary store where people who actually need it can pay for it with their hard earned currency.

You don’t actually have to kill all of them.

The achievement line is basically “kill chak without dying”. Although it doesn’t make you ineligible if you die (the icon doesn’t disappear), I don’t think you can continue the achievement if you do. The icon doesn’t disappear even if you complete all the achievements, so maybe it’s just the icon that’s bugged or poorly implemented.

The first time, I jumped straight to the back of the room and only managed to kill one chak. When I came back and started killing chak, I couldn’t get the expert achievement (10 kills), so I finished the mission and went at it again.

Second time around I slowly started killing them one by one from the start and made sure I didn’t die (or get downed). I got the achievement with 5+ chak left on one side of the pit, so it’s not about killing every single one.

If you spent an hour dying, you probably disqualified yourself, but it’d be nice if someone more official chipped in on the matter. At the very least, some things could be made clearer in-game.

I don’t see that working in practice. People who want something from the gem store but aren’t willing to pay real money for it have already decided that it’s not worth the price they’re asking for it. If the gem prices get too high, their opinion won’t suddenly change with regards to real money, they’ll just decide that it’s not worth any kind of money and move along.

Blade shards are the cheapest way to get ascended pieces for alts and this useful even if you unlocked the skins.

True enough, I suppose, but I’ve already got plenty of ascended backpieces.

You should mail me those blade shards wink wink

If I could have given or traded them away, I would have done so a long time ago.

I’ve already made all three ascended backpieces when they were originally introduced. Those Blade Shards are leftovers, just like the Found Belongings.

It’s become increasingly more annoying moving these things around from one place to another and I’d love to just get rid of them, but it’d be nice to have some official word on the matter.

Not that I’d trade the blade shards in even if they reintroduce the merchant. They promised us some nice things for them and when the merchant was originally introduced, I casually ignored it because it was a complete ripoff and I thought we’d get a better deal in the future.

I don’t know, I keep thinking maybe we’ll get a blade armor at some point or something, and I have a habit of hoarding just about everything, but it’s unlikely and my storage and mules could use a breather once in a while.

Will I ever be able to use these again?

Can I safely trash these or what?

I don’t really expect Found Belongings to make a comeback unless we get a S01 LS remake, but it’s a little frustrating that I can’t even salvage the Blade Shards into sprockets or something if I can’t sell them to people who actually do need them.

New players are getting a free game. Old players are getting…. nothing. What’s so hard to understand?

Setting aside the fact that what has been shown so far is hardly worth the pricing and that most people will have to dish out an extra $10 for another character slot if they’re buying the standard edition, at the very least they should give existing players an extra game key if they’re giving them out for free. Otherwise, what’s the point of “upgrading” your account for the exact same price if all you’re getting is a slap in the face for years of loyalty?

And once again new players are senselessly rewarded while dedicated players who are sustaining the company and keeping the game alive are left feeling neglected and cheated. It’s become almost an art form at this point.

I’ll get it if they drop the price by $20 for those of us who already own the game, otherwise they can forget about it. I don’t enjoy being insulted like this.

Needs more Instanced PvE Content

You will likely never see content in the game that only a few select people can do, and if you do, it likely won’t be particularly rewarding.

Anet’s goal, for the most part, is for everyone to be able to play their content and have fun doing it (though they often fail at the latter).

The number of people who want to play 10-20 man instanced raids is a niche crowd at best and pleasing those people at the expense of others is likely not worth the investment (although they’ve been experimenting with the implementation of different difficulties).

It’s bad enough that they’re trying to cater to people who want to be special snowflakes with super rare RNG gear and who get off on the misfortune of others. We certainly don’t need them catering to some hardcore minority who gets off on feeling elitist because other people can’t handle the same content.

I just want SAB. Give me SAB back and I’d be just fine until HoT. I mean, most people would just be satisfied with it as it was, don’t even have to add new worlds or anything, just let us slowly grind skins and have fun. I wish I knew who I had to spank to get it through their thick skull.

I’m just gonna add my vote for how poorly made the sword animations are. We’ve literally seen better animation in the previous century. Even at 50% speed like in the video above, it looks too fast and not much like a chain weapon at all.

If they don’t slow it down and have it apply properly to all slashing animations, I’m gonna have to ask for a refund. The way I see it, right now, it’s just false advertisement.

Silk scraps need to go back to normal refinement numbers and inscriptions of all tiers should be craftable with the profession’s primary material, not cloth for all profession.

As it stands, light armor is incomparably more expensive than any other type of armor. If that’s “working as intended” then the intentions are wrong. The days when silk was in overabundance are long since past.

I think the correct and most fair approach would be to try and balance the supply and demand for all materials.

The lack of animation with some skills is also a bit disappointing, yes, but I’d be satisfied if the existing ones were polished at the very least.

I’m not expecting top of the line experimental physics technologies of 2015 with new sword skill animations for every class, but we’ve been using chain swords, whips, and other chain-like weapons for decades now. We know what they’re supposed to look and feel like, and unfortunately the skin falls quite a bit short of the expected level.

I love the new chain sword skin, I bought it almost instantly when I logged in, but I was somewhat disappointed by its animations. The speed of animation is so blindingly fast that you barely have a chance to catch a glimpse of it within the few frames when it splits up into a chain, and it makes it feel more like the sword is weightless and glitching around rather flailing heftily like a chain would.

Does anyone else feel that way?

Any chance we could have the animations slowed down a bit if nothing else?

If Namco was able to make the chain sword “feel” good more than 15 years ago, I’m sure the skilled animators at ArenaNet should be able to pull off a simpler version…
