I agree from a mostly hypothetical standpoint. I rarely poke my head out of WvW or PvP, but one need not poke his head out often to know that zerker isn’t just the meta, it’s the PvE game right now. I think it’s kind of funny how elitist the PvE side of GW2 is, while the PvPers of both stripes are a helpful, fun loving lot for the most part. It’s a huge part of what keeps me fighting other humans instead of bots.

In WoW I got mad other players were always 1-shotting me.
In GW2 I get mad mobs always 1-shot me.
In TOR I generally fell asleep before a fight ended, but that’s not really relevant.

I feel this way too. Unfortunately, I also feel compelled to contribute some levelheadedness around here. That and snark.

When can I hold my weapons like females?

Norn males hold greatswords the same as females iirc….but honestly if there was any wielding change I could want it’d be so that I could swap hand positioning so that my main hand weapon is in my left hand, and my offhand is on the right. No love for lefty’s in mmos!

In this game specifically though, I think there’s a reason for that. So much of this game is designed around being able to identify your enemy type on sight: the similarity of silhouettes across a given armor class (ie, all medium armors on males are trench coats) , inability to equip “lesser” armors, having skills attached to your weapon, etc.

I feel for the lefty crowd in general, but this time I think it might fit with the design philosophy.

As said previously, roaming around looking for Dynamic Events is the best way to level in PvE, but your first 5ish levels don’t really jive well with that because you’re restricted to such a small area at first. Just hack out those first few levels and the world opens up. When a random NPC comes up to you screaming about trouble somewhere, he or she is actually trying to direct you to a DE, so don’t ignore them.

Also, don’t hesitate to to hop to other race’s starting areas, they’re just as fun.

Learn to dodge. It’s a fundamental mechanic, and very necessary to play well. The game’s really forgiving about this at first, so it can be easy to start some bad habits at early levels. You’ll probably want to disable double tap dodging, and maybe rebind it to somewhere easier to reach. I put mine on my mouse-wheel click.

I’ve always compared starting this game to one’s first smartphone. At first, you’ll probably hate it because it’s so different. In a few hours or days though, you’ll wonder how you ever lived before GW2.

And most importantly, remember, the GW2 community on the whole are a very helpful bunch, don’t be afraid to ask for help. I’m not saying we don’t have jerks and trolls, but on the whole, it’s a very sweet community.

I have to make a couple of points here.

1) RNG gambling is much more popular in the east. Even if NA and EU players never ever bought them, there’s still a couple cultures that are very into them. I’m not saying that’s or good or bad, just that it is.

2) Even though I think we’re inflating ANet’s interest in using this as a referendum on RNG, there’s one theory I haven’t seen floated anywhere. What if they interpret our lack of voting RNG prices down as being fine with the prices the way they are? Spun another way, GW2 players value their in-game currency more than real dollars, relative to in-game purchases.

Who knows what ANet/NCSoft are going to do with this data? As close as the race came out, they probably shouldn’t take it as much of anything dramatic.

One thing no one’s mentioned so far, is that many (probably all) servers have a public VoIP (teamspeak, mumble, whatever) that many guilds and commanders use to coordinate with pugs and smaller guilds. I can’t speak for all servers, but Jade Quarry has a great community, and most commanders are helpful for guild and rando alike. Knowledge is power, so if on your solo/small group adventures you can shout out enemy movements and whatnot you’ll be helping the server as a whole. Plus, you’ll be getting feedback from them, and know where to avoid, as keeping an eye on enemy zergs is generally a map-wide concern. The whole WvW experience goes from seemingly mindless to very interesting when you’re on your server’s VoIP.

On one hand, getting more AP in WvW would be nice, as you’re right, you don’t get much. On the other hand, the AP update took AP from “completely meaningless” to “kind of neat, I guess” in my opinion. I suspect that sentiment is mirrored by many avid WvWers, but I could be completely off the mark on that one.

Here’s the thing most people forget. This game was made by ARENANet. Not DungeonNet. GW1 was marketed, not as a Massively Multiplayer online RPG, but as a Competitive Online RPG. I know they don’t like to throw this around, because so many folks like PvE, and it seems that’s where the real money is, but the truth is, this is a game based more around player skill than character stats. That’s due in no small part to the focus on PvP (I’m sticking WvW under that heading).

It doesn’t matter how much content a game puts in, player will burn through it eventually. In a genre where total gameplay is typically measured by thousands of hours, keeping up with the demand for MOAR content is extremely difficult in the real world where humans have to design, create, and test things. Whether you’re getting a new raid every 3 months, or a new party every other week, enough is never enough.

The simple fact is, some folks want to grind, no matter what they say otherwise. That’s why they put in reward for grinding, but none of those rewards are needed for anything. You can be useful in WvW and pretty much all PvE in greens and yellows until you have enough cash or tokens to get your exotics, and it won’t take you all that long to gear up anyway. Contrast this to games where grinding out one tier at a time is required to play the game akittens highest levels. And once you get geared out, another teir is just down the road. Some folks like that style of gameplay. Most (but certainly not all) of the folks playing Guild Wars 2 are here because the gear treadmill was something they wanted to avoid.

Sorry ‘bout the tangent. TL;DR, when you get sick of stomping through repetitive AI bots, come test your skills against some human beings. You have some choices on how to do it, and I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Dailies - the bane of modern games

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Klawlyt.6507

Klawlyt.6507

A queue system that back logs dailies is a no brainer.

You go away for a month, you can comeback and do 30 of them. You miss a couple days, you make them up on the weekend.

It’s also a solution for anyone who wants to reach the top of the achievement leaderboard but can’t because they bought the game a few months late. No problem we’ll back log 100 dailies and 3 monthlies for you, do them at your leisure.

Equal reward for equal time played…it’s a simple concept.

And to take it one step further, what other players do with their playing time does not affect you. They’re not following you around typing angrily in your ear. They’re playing the game their way at their pace enjoying their own business. The reward that they receive or don’t receive has no affect on you what so ever so it should not be your concern.

If you’re perfectly fine with missing a few dailies here and there, hey more power to you. But when a player comes to forums asking for equal rights, it’s not your job to defend the oppressive system (it is) because the entire situation doesn’t affect you. To sit here and pretend that someone doesn’t deserve equal treatment in the 21st century is ignorant, selfish, and borderline psychotic.

I’m not even saying that a moderate backlog of a week or so is bad. It’s your language that amazes me. Oppressive? Really? Oppressive?! Like the ANet staff are so much further ahead by making you do dailies daily. Like Mike O’Brien’s life is so much better because he’s denying you the reward of having a shiny gauntlet and a couple slightly better statted trinkets a couple weeks earlier than you would have otherwise?

I took a few months off at the beginning of the year. Those dailies and monthlies (and you know, the parts of the game that actually resembled a game) are gone. I’m not bitter. Good on them. I was off playing Marvel Heroes and Fallout 3 for the umpteenth time. ArenaNet doesn’t owe me kitten.

I’m going camping this weekend. I’m going to miss 4 days of dailies (and I usually get normal and PvP!), the WvW reset (plus the whole weekend which, y’know, is the part that matters in WvW), AND the return of Breaking Bad! That’s life! Just because ANet isn’t doing things in the absolutely most perfect way you can imagine, doesn’t mean the man is trying to keep you down.

On the other hand, the man really IS trying to keep you down, the man just ain’t ANet.

Wasn’t it stated by one of the devs that that branch of achievements weren’t meant so much as achievements, but just as stat counters. And that rather than code a whole new system for them, they just tossed them under AP with hilariously high goals.

I’ll admit, it’s not the best way to handle things, but I believe that’s what we have here. Why they would attach a title to it is beyond me.

If you can name one role a thief can fill that doesn’t involve stealth spamming or massive damage that allows it to the support, bunker, or roam with the efficiency of ANY other class, I will concede the point and send you 5 gold in game.

Now I cant say the build is bad but it’s not as efficient in a party as a full clerics gear staff/hammer guardian 0/0/30/30/10 that can bring fire and light fields that it can blast in every 5 seconds, have huge durations off of the granted boons and pump out 21 stacks of might on up to 5 people by itself…which also heals it. It’s boon count exceeds your builds capability with just core class design…which is dumb.

Your build brings poison and smoke fields. To be efficient, spamming your blast finishers in your fields will cause weakness or stealth…otherwise you’re useless to the party when there’s no field around that the devs decided not to give the thief because they’re !#$%ing bad at creating a rogue archetype class.

When it comes down to raw utility the build is bested by a vast array of Engineers who have a better pull than scorpion wire (unblockable, unreflectible, shorter CD, one of five skills they get for that same 1 utility slot) and bring every field except for dark and ethereal to the fight. They can not only provide more utility but also do not have to give up mid-high damage to do so…another failure in the core design.

Is the build playable? Sure why not. Is it as efficient as any other class filling a support role? !@$% no, if I have a choice between that and the guardian build I mentioned, its a no brainer I’m going with the guardian every time its a heal and boon factory on a level the thief couldn’t dream of. If you’d like the build I can post it in its entirety for you since I’d also want the same given our friendly wager.

First off, I don’t really need your gold, nor did we make a wager. You made an offer.

Second, you said with the efficiency of ANY other class. (emphasis yours) I never said I could support as well as a guardian, few classes can. Saying I have to be as good as a guardian is just moving the goalposts. I didn’t set out to prove thieves were the best support class, that’s ludicrous. I just wanted to show that when specced right, even a thief can be a valuable asset to a large, organized zerg.

Also, you overlooked how useful it is to have a thief with dagger storm in the initial push. That’s a lot of cripples, and some respectable damage, especially since those blasts helped spread plenty of Might. Plus I can do it again 90 seconds later. Lot’s of big fights last that long.

And while I’m nitpicking, the build still has ~ 2200 power. Annnnd, even though my base crit is just 10%, I have about 60% fury uptime all by myself, plus whatever I get from anyone else running around. It’s not like I’m throwing wet noodles out there.

Yeah, I’d probably be better off rolling an alt. I have 4 of em under level 15, and another at 29. I just don’t usually play a bunch of alts, in any game. That’s just me. So I took the tools at my disposal, and I made myself as useful as I could. Keep your money, man, but at least concede that I met your challenge.

Having single character gold is a convenience to some people. Having account wide gold is a convenience to some people. Either way, people are going to be put out. Smart money is on the latter group being a much larger segment.

Before yesterday, folks who wanted to move gold around had to shuffle through characters to get what they wanted. Now the likely very small minority will have to take extra steps (keeping a ledger, etc) to get what they want.

Dailies - the bane of modern games

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Klawlyt.6507

I have not seen a single good answer to the question “Why should 30 minutes a day for 7 days be rewarded more than 3.5 hours a day for one day?”

Because there isn’t one.

Anyone is who against equal reward for equal time played is just selfish and greedy.

Because they’re dailies, not playedies. They’re not a nefarious means to keep the proletariat down. They’re not needed for anything meaningful. You don’t miss out on anything tangible by not doing them. It’s not like we’re talking about the disparity between the changes in worker productivity and real wages over the past several decades. We’re talking about picking a method for a video game to give goal oriented people something to strive for, and as a substitute to the popular WoW-styled rested XP.

There are pluses and minuses to every system and this is the one they picked. Do you also believe it’s heinously unfair that WoW and ToR cap the amount of rested xp you can earn? What system of doling out digital goodies would meet your ideals of social justice, the weekly? I play shows a lot of weekends, so maybe I can only get one good weekend in every month. What about my catch up? Why do I have to play every single week, if I go on a bender on or two weekends a month? Where do you draw the line?

I’m not saying dailies are perfect, but your fanatical opposition to them part amazes me, part saddens me.

It’s kind of funny how toxicly competitive the part of the game designed to be the least competitive is. Yeah, I wanna run in my PVT gear, and yeah, I wanna try something new once in a while. Open world dueling

in Suggestions

Posted by: Klawlyt.6507

Klawlyt.6507

First off, I’m in favor of open world dueling, and yes, we’ve beaten this to death.

I still want to point out that somewhere pre-release (and I can’t find it atm) anet specifically came out against dueling because they want the classes to be balanced in the team sense, not in 1v1 fights. (like a big, paper scissors rock, if you will) If you allow players who don’t understand this (aka most everybody) to duel, it will put a spotlight on the fact that some specific classes have strong advantages over other specific classes… in 1v1 situations. This will lead to the perception that the game is even more imbalanced than it is (and I don’t want a debate on the game’s overall balance here. Some think it’s fine, or on the way to fine, some think it’s horrible. Whatever. This isn’t the place.)

That being said, you’re never going to please everyone, and even if the game were absolutely, perfectly balanced, you still have folks who get stomped and blame balance/design with no meaningful effort to improve their own play, and that’s without dueling. Please ANet. Pretty please. Give us dueling… and a way to easily avoid dueling for those who want that.

It’s a tough spot for ANet to be in though. If you tell everyone that they’ll be worth gold (or any sort of reward, for that matter) when the event’s over, then everyone just holds on to them for later, and ignores the election. Don’t tell people, and they’ll be justifiably miffed after they delete seemingly useless junk. It sucks if you deleted yours, but try to appreciate the lose/lose situation ANet was in here.

The Role of Thief in WvW

in WvW

Posted by: Klawlyt.6507

Klawlyt.6507

I just posted my usual zergging build in another thread, but I figure I can toss it up here and expose it to the most ridicule possible. The goal above all else in the build is Moar Blast Finishers! It’s made to support your teammates more than anything, while staying alive/not being rally fodder, which is easy for a poorly built thief in a zerg to become.

10/0/0/30/30

I take the damage/health on steal trait in the first line.

Acrobatics I have fall damage reduction, extra init every 10 seconds, and the third one changes pretty frequently, usually the heal on init usage lately.

I have fury/might/swiftness on steal, vigor on steal/boon steal (I think that one is Bountiful Theft), and the interrupt on steal/steal CD reduction. These three further allow me to play supportively, but overall the build isn’t completely useless ins small scale battles. You just have to play… wait for it… intelligently and skillfully. I can keep swiftness on a slow (mesmer) commander (or yak, or back of the tail…) for 13 out of every 21 seconds all by myself, too.

And no, I can’t ever remember the names of the actual traits.

I use SB in large group engagements for the aforementioned blast finishers, and use D/P for more personal fights. Yes, I use HS, no it is not all I use, that gets you dead to good players. No, I don’t “abuse” stealth, but I’m not above using it if I need it. For 9 init a whack, I’m definitely not spamming it.

I use Withdraw for my heal. I use Scorpion Wire since it’s cooldown was reduced. It’s nice for dragging called targets into your zerg, or a great interrupt in smaller fights, even if the pull kitten s out. Roll for initiative for additional stunbreak/init regeneration. Sig of Shadows for… well speed. Dagger Storm because it’s WvW and I’m not made for venom sharing.

It grants survivability, utility, and enough damage output to be on even footing with any given player in a 1v1, while still being designed for large group play.

Very little use of stealth, certainly nothing close to spamming. Crazy utility for my group.

It grants survivability, utility, and enough damage output to be on even footing with any given player in a 1v1.

Very little use of stealth, certainly nothing close to spamming. Far from zerker damage. Crazy utility for my group.

If you can name one role a thief can fill that doesn’t involve stealth spamming or massive damage that allows it to the support, bunker, or roam with the efficiency of ANY other class, I will concede the point and send you 5 gold in game.

Equip PVT for survival, spec for maximum init generation, and be a source of constant blast finishers. In essence playing support for a well coordinated team who uses combo fields intelligently. No stealth needed, only medicore damage.

I have recently stopped logging on and I can’t honestly say I miss it at all. I literally only logged on for dailies and not because I wanted to do them, but because of the “achievement points” (yeah… because those are achievements…).

I will never understand this.

“We’re a company of passionate gamers with one mission: to make Guild Wars 2 the best MMORPG ever created.”’
-Mike O’Brien, Design Manifesto

If you feel Arena Net accomplished their mission you have low standards for what you’d consider the best MMORPG ever created.

Go ahead, give me the “they’re still improving the game” argument, I’ve got an even better quote from the development team to respond to that one

Well, you got me there. I definitely reverently referenced the manifesto, said that GW2 was the best MMO ever created and is completely without flaw, and told you to be patient while they continued to improve the game. Not only did I do all those those things, you’ve masterfully, and thoughtfully, managed to counter all three of those points I spent a lot of time making.

Congratulations! The forums, nay, the Internet has been won on this day.

All I’m saying, is I continue playing the game because I continue enjoying the game. Why is it you continue to play the game again?

I will never understand this. You hate playing the game, but log in everyday just so can participate in a part of it that you… hate? (Not to mention, you stated you stopped logging in, except for dailies, which probably means logging in… daily).

I have a pretty radical idea I’d like to share with you. It’s kind of a new concept, not just in gaming, but for entertainment as a whole. Books, movies, tv shows, music, you name it. I think I can solve all your entertainment-related woes with one little suggestion. Are you ready?

If you’re not having fun… stop.

That’s it! There’s no need to torture yourself by playing a game you don’t enjoy any more! There really isn’t! Connect Four stopped being fun when I was eight. You know what? I haven’t played a game of Connect Four since I was eight! It’s amazing!

inb4 fanboy accusations: I’m not saying don’t criticize GW2 or ANet or NCSoft (by all means, criticize NCSoft!). This game isn’t perfect, and can be improved in many ways. But guess what, so can every other game, movie, tv show, book, website etc. But don’t complain about feeling obligated to play a game you no longer enjoy. The only one who makes you log in is you. And no, I’m not targeting you in particular, Vanthian. You just exemplified in this moment the exact mindset that I have never, and will never, understand.

Why is WvW Rank Not Shared Between All Toons?

Because you haven’t earned it on all your alts, GD, why do you people even want a game, you don’t want to actually play it.

Because playing in WvW isn’t about advancing your character (though it’s certainly possible), it’s about advancing your server, and yourself as a player. I get that in PvE there are immersion considerations, and your characters are each unique personalities and whatnot. But what I find more often than not in WvW, is that players are playing much more like an FPS or MOBA than anything that would fall under the heading of Role Playing Game. In WvW, you are not your character, your character is you. Lots of folks will gladly switch classes in the middle of a play session, not to play a more fun class, or one that better suits their personality, but because that’s what their group is lacking. It’s bad enough commander tags don’t carry over. “Sorry guys, I’d love to both continue to lead, and help make up for our lack of mesmers tonight, but I can’t do both.”

TL;DR – WXP shouldn’t be a measure of what YOUR CHARACTER has accomplished, that doesn’t mean squat to most avid WvWers. WXP should be a measure of what YOU have accomplished, much like basically everything sPvP related.

I only need one reason to vote Kiel. The only good Charr is a dead Charr .

The olny good human is dead human. Time to make a raid to Kryta and exterminate anything that moves on 2 feets. No, gods won’t help u as we will turn them into fastfood to our lovely devourers

I remember a time when charr had gods? Whatever happened to those guys? Oh yeah, the humans conquered and destroyed them. Now be a good kitty and go play with your yarn.

Dailies - the bane of modern games

I feel this game places no pressure on you to get ascended gear, unless you’re going for high level fractals, where you get ascended gear much quicker than via laurals anyway.

You can’t get ascended amulets nor accessories from fractals. The only way to earn this BiS gear is by completing extremely easy, dull, boring and repetitive, yet heavily time-gated content. You may be a good player but your playing skill is irrelevant, it’s the repetition that rewards you. I believe this is wrong, but this approach is present in so many areas of the game…

Usually I prefer to do the chores – the dailies, as soon as possible. This way I can just focus on an activity that actually gives me fun, yet isn’t sufficient to complete the dailies alone.

I’ll admit, I didn’t realize that. I’ll gladly admit the last fractal I ran was in November when they debuted.

That still doesn’t change the fact that the stat increase is almost meaningless, and not having them doesn’t stop you from doing anything. There’s not a single part of the game that even comes close to requiring you to have them, though I could be wrong about the high level fractals, admittedly. Let’s be honest though, fractal grinding was put in place to placate those who like grindy, repetitive content. Hence my avoidance of them.

The class is otherwise totally worthless in WvW. You run in a zerg with a glass cannon thief and what happens is you go down, you die, and then half the enemy zerg rally’s off your stupid little thief !#$, and they proceed to straight up curb stomp your allies.
I’ll leave you kids with this

Or… you could get a PVT set, manage your (admittedly generous) dodges well, and be a source of constant blast finishers benefiting the well-organized group you’re rolling with greatly. Stay on the pin and be ready to make it rain… quite literally. Add to that the fact you can be buffing allies with swiftness, fury, might, and vigor with greater than 50% uptime, and its almost like you’re playing a support class. If you spec for it, you can even get regen on allies via stealth (though I personally don’t spec for shadow arts. I think it makes tyria hate me a little less for playing a thief).

I could be wrong though. Maybe I was running d/d stealth zerker all that time.

Water combat: great or suicidal?

Elite aside, my build translates perfectly underwater. It doesn’t mean I’m pleased with the restrictions. Granted, some make sense mechanic-wise, and some make sense immersion-wise, it just bugs me that some things, like engi turrets had all new assets for underwater, but thieves’ guild npcs can’t just use the pre-existing swimming human animation. Not that I use traps as a thief, but if engi’s get special aqua turrets, why don’t thieves and rangers get aqua traps for example? Or look at grenade kit (sorry to keep hammering at engis). The whole skill bar fundamentally changes its function underwater. Why not that level of attention on everything to make it work. Necros lose their elite minion just for going underwater.

And which of us are the pro hot-shot players exactly? Maybe the Team Legacy dude, but I’m pretty sure he was doing the opposite of complaining.

First, I agree that it should be account bound. Yes, this is the single reason why over 90% of my play time is on a single character these days, and only one of my alts has broken level 25.

But please, for the love of Grenth and all that is unholy, please stop saying you’re being punished for playing this game. You’re still getting WXP, just in a very suboptimal way. If you want a large hot fudge sundae, and you only get a small vanilla cone, you are not being punished.

This. IRL I’m an atheist all the way. I don’t consider my character “religious” when Balthazaar actually lends me his dogs every 4 minutes, and his great great grandpappy actually spoke with gods.

I’ll be honest, despite having played since launch, I never did Victory or Death (the Arah Story quest). Did all the Orrian undead outright die, Pahntom Menace style? I thought conceptually the pact still had lots of clean up to do, and Orr was still swarming with undead in the current timeline. Also, are there undead in the explorable paths of Arah? Don’t worry about spoilers on my behalf. If I were that into it, I would have done it already.

The Black Lion Trading Co. is too big to fail! Do we want to support the revolving door between pirate government and mangy Charr traders? Tell Great Northern Wall Street NO! Vote Keil.

That being said, I would have voted in favor of Abbadon anything… had it not been in the fractals. As it stands the election for me came down to virtually useless WP cost reduction, and absolutely useless key prices. That, and who wants a Charr running things? Look at how they’ve treated Ascalon. Now go look how Kryta shimmers.

Dailies - the bane of modern games

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Klawlyt.6507

I think the core of my argument still stands regardless. Not doing dailies doesn’t stop you from doing anything (conversely, keeping up with your dailies doesn’t allow you to do anything extra). The advantages given by ascended gear are negligible. In many other MMO’s you actually do need the next tier of gear to do large segments of the game. In those games it is reasonable to feel forced to do dailies (or dungeons, or raids, or whatever) to enjoy sll the game has to offer. I feel this game places no pressure on you to get ascended gear, unless you’re going for high level fractals, where you get ascended gear much quicker than via laurals anyway. Therefore any feeling of pressure is internal, and can be alleviated with some self-control. That’s the meat of my opinion. The rest was just colored by personal stuff, because my point of view is the only one I have the right to express, and I wanted to show where I was coming from.

RPing is something that’s always fascinated me, but I’ve never dabbled with (on the other hand, I have a long history of tabletop roleplaying, so I get that itch scratched elsewhere). How did RPers contend with dailies before they added laurels?

Can I pick something between great and suicidal? I love the idea of water combat that the game presents us with, and was absolutely stoked for it prelaunch. In practice, it does feel like your abilities are a bit diminished under water, and I gotta wonder why some things are wholesale blocked. I main a thief, and as noted, we seem to be on the short end of the aqua-stick, though. Doesn’t the magical, teleporting, more-members-on-demand Thieves’ Guild have water breathers? I would love to sea water combat tweaked a bit more, but I know there are probably a lot higher priorities for ANet atm.
