Do older people play this game?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lazuli.2098

Im 66 and been playing MMOs since Anarchy Online, if anyone can remember that.
Heres an interesting question though.
Trying to get one of my friends whose the same age as me into this game , and she hasnt got a lot of dexterity in her hands, so which class needs the least button mashing to play?

In my opinion, a long bow Ranger has the least button mashing…

I was going to suggest that very thing. While at long range there is more time to react to attack animations also. And then switching to a great sword if the mob closes doesn’t really require much button pushing either.

General thoughts on servers

MegaServers:

I like them but then my sister and I are not on one of the more populated servers and we don’t RP. Maybe a compromise would be megaServers for non-city maps but each city map is populated only by the home server. The only exception to that would be when the living story takes place in a city, such as the destruction of Lion’s Arch.

Is it possible to switch orders?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lazuli.2098

Lazuli.2098

No way to switch orders on an existing character after the choice.

But you can make another character and pick another order, buy the gear, and unlock the skins and use the skins on any character.

Any character? Or any character in the same weight of armor?

I bought priory robes for my human female mesmer. My Asura male necro can wear the priory robes but not my human male warrior.

Compare your map to this one of Metrica Province. Are you missing the label in white that says “Serpent Wind”? If so there is a cave that is reached through the entrance from just under the Voloxian Passage label.

If you already have that then how about Calx’s Hideout in the bottom right corner? That one is often missed. To reach there you must go through a portal near the heart and POI above the Sunshade Caves when the event is up.

how to enter same build as my friend?

Lazuli.2098

If it is not about different builds but about different map instances then after you are in the same party you can
1. select the friend and choose enter same map instance (can’t remember the exact wording).
or 2. Exit the map by going to character selection then log back onto the same character. You should be in the same instance.

In the future form the party before joining your friend in their map instance.

That would be my thief since I got a white/ silver outline theme going on with his clothing.
Yes I know the Vigil glove is somewhat mess it up by the outlines are too thick but that was the only glove that had the outline but still look good on it (the crafted leather didn’t look right). Also I know using the human tier 3 mask also suit it aswell since it too got the outline effect but I liked the seeker mask better as the colour match well with the shoulder and the neck area.

Looking through this thread again and noticed your thief. Really like the look.

Thanks, guys. You’re really helpful. I think my current plan is to keep my level 24 asura engineer, my level 20 asura necromancer and either the sylph or human. Or both. I also have a charr guardian, but I’m not quite sure about that one yet. I’m not fond of the charr running on all four, so maybe I’ll make one of the last race instead, to see what they are like. Or just stick to the four characters I already have. Decision, decisions… lol.

I right there with you. I made a female Charr engineer which worked out great. An engineer can switch between kits to get a 33% increase in speed. There is no cool down so can keep switching between kits giving basically a 100% up time for the speed boost. When the Charr get a speed boost their run animation is upright on the hind legs, not hopping along.

Keep in mind as well that if you buy the armor from your order, the skin gets put in your wardrobe, so characters in the Vigil can access Order of Whispers armor, and so on, as long as you have a character in that order to buy the armor.

Thanks, I hadn’t noticed. I bought the priory robes for my main mesmer and haven’t really wanted to put them on another character. But I’ve been looking for a more believable melee armor for my mesmers since that’s how I play them at least half the time, if not more. I’ll check out the vigil and whisper armor to see if I can’t use some of them.

Actually, no, I don’t care about achivement points. Or I would, if there was any point to them. Maybe buy stuff in an achivement shop, or something. But as long as they are just for display, I don’t care about them.

It wasn’t until recently that I’ve started to care about AP. Yeah sure you get a reward chest every 500 points but the rewards are not all that great. Now that I am within 200 points of my 10,000 chest I’m looking forward to getting the 30 gold, 400 gems, laurels and other stuff.

I made sure I had at least 1 of every race so I could experience the stories and for the AP. I also made sure I choose each of the 3 orders. When you get to level 30 of the personal story the 5 race stories merge into 3 stories, 1 for each of the orders. At some point you can buy the armors specific to your order for your character, so you might want to see how your character looks in each before choosing the order. I chose the order based on profession and personality more and have only bought one set of armor based on their order.

I also have at least 1 of every profession. I was surprised that I like some of them when I didn’t expect to.

Hopefully the upcoming change to dungeons so that they scale to any size party, 1 – 5, will solve all these issues. The OP will not need to call in 3 more members to the party to finish the dungeon. Players who do not have a band of friends or belong to a guild will not need to form a party with possible jerks and trolls.

First, please site where this dungeon scaling is coming from… As far as I heard its only for the conversion of arah story to the final mission of personal story instead of a 5 man disaster of a “dungeon.”

You are right. I just looked this up. I had misunderstood some comments posted in another thread. Sorry for the confusion. Too bad, I would love party scaling in dungeons.

I’ve learned a few things reading the responses, thanks everyone.

Just a Flesh Wound: Sounds fun. Makes me want to make an Asura guardian or warrior or even elementalist with a lightening hammer. I’ve not made a new toon since the trait debacle and won’t until it has been fixed so it may be awhile.

I do find the Asura animations fun. Love their flip when they dodge. My mesmer dodges forward, backward and to each side all the time but I also have my necro dodge while he moving along escorting an NPC just ’cause I like the animation.

Aerlen: Love it. I really like their standing around pose when they cross their arms in front. It gives them “attitude”.

Love all the pictures.

Rev V: Jedi looks fierce and Squirtle looks like a handful.

Leo G: Yours looks formidable. K Ki’s head would probably not even reach his shoulder.

Endless Soul: Your deadly duo look like night and day or light and dark. A great looking pair.

MeanCoffeeBean: Fluttershy looks like fun. I do like the concept of “big thing, small package”.

Edit: I also like taking my Asura on jumping puzzles. They seem so much easier than when I take my Charr or Norn characters.

I made my female Asura mesmer as short as possible and with the thinnest build. Also gave her a short name, K Ki, and dressed her to blend into the background all with the intention to use her in PvP and/or WvW. I was hoping it would be hard for other players to distinguish her animations and to tell her apart from her clones. I never played her in PvP or WvW so don’t know if that would have worked but I sure noticed a disadvantage fighting in the zerg to kill the Shadow Behemoth. She was completely lost in the mass of characters.

Lazuli.2098

As I said earlier in the thread, dailies have never been about fun for anyone, they’ve always been about rewards. Which were previously gained for little-to-no extra effort. Now the no-effort rewards have been moved to log-in rewards, the new dailies are there for extra rewards if you want to do them. Which you are certainly under no obligation to, nor should you, if you don’t like doing them.

You might not have fun doing them but many others, including myself, used to have fun. Now I’m doing dailies for the AP and not for fun. Once I reach 10K I probably won’t do dailies much any more. I’ve got about 200 more points to go so not much longer.

That is not enjoying doing the old dailies. That is enjoying playing the game, and getting extra rewards for doing nothing extra. …

You still had to do extra things but there was more choice in which tasks. And events where in a particular race’s maps not in a particular zone. Now they are almost always low level zones. So my character working on completing Mount Malstrom can not do events there. Instead she must go to Metrica Province or I send someone else there. Since all my characters have 100% of Metrica P. it’s not somewhere where I already have some one. I can’t imagine why they send us all to those low level zones unless they are trying to fool new players into thinking there are more people playing this game then there are.

How Guild Wars has inspired me

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lazuli.2098

Lazuli.2098

Will try to keep this brief.
I started playing Guild Wars when I was 14 years old. I remember when Factions came out, followed by Nightfall and Eye of the North. I remember taking a week and half off from work and university for the opening week of GW2.
Even though I was never one of the die hard competitive players, everything about the world of Guild Wars speaks to me in a very nostalgic way, so much so that it hurts when I listen to the soundtrack of pre-searing Ascalon, or think back to the sense of wonder I felt when exploring the more isolated reaches of the Maguuma jungle.
This sense of wonder inspired me to leave my home country of New Zealand and have my own adventure traveling the world. I’m currently living in Northern Scandinavia, 400km north of the Arctic circle training sled huskies in exchange for food and accommodation. I can honestly say that I never would have had the imagination or courage to go on a journey like this, had it not been for the strong influences your games have had on me.
Keep making beautiful, inspiring, captivating games. I’m looking forward to seeing what Heart of Thorns has in store, even though it will be a while before I can return to the game!
Many thanks,
Tom (Quinn Winter)

You’re probably about ready to go through my least favorite time of year up north – spring thaw. Best wishes with your continued adventures.

I doubt 99% of GW2 population are bothering with doing the dailies. And of those that are doing the dailies I doubt even 75% enjoy the new system over the old much less 99%. So of the total gw2 population a doubt that even 50% are enjoying the new dailies.

Were there people who enjoyed doing the old dailies?

Read this thread to find out.

Be sure to answer this question very specifically… not enjoying playing and getting the dailies on the way, but actually enjoying the task of “Inflict 20 conditions,” or the others.

That is a perfectly valid way to enjoy getting dailies. That is the way PvPers and WvWers are doing it now. PvEers used to be able to with the previous dailies but now tasks are too specific.

Lazuli.2098

There have been a few times when I would 100% complete a zone but the game tells me there is an unexplored area. Is that a bug?

No. To get 100% completion of a zone you need to get all hearts, POIs, WPs, vistas and skill points in the map. There are some areas of a zone that do not contain any of those things. Once one of your characters travel to those areas of the zone your account will be credited with having explored there and it will show up on the map of the character that did so with a name in white letters.

Also in the Lornar’s pass, I 100% completed it but there is an unexplored area to the Southeast in the mountains that border the next zone. I cannot figure out how to get there, anybody know?

Compare your characters map of Lorar’s Pass with this one looking for any areas grayed out and not labeled.

My first was a ranger also. My second and third mesmer and elementalist. Those are my 3 favorite but mesmer is my main. I like ranged combat on all three but have grown to really like melee on my mesmer and ranger and even on my elementalist (I find it very satisfying smashing things with her lightening hammer). The GS #2 and #3 on the ranger are kind of flashy. They have “ghost animal” animations that appeal to me. I like swooping in as a bird of prey and then pouncing like a big bear. And both mesmer and elementalist are very flashy, being scholar class.

If you really want to craft from the start then you can buy GW2 game cards with real money, redeem them in the game to get gems, buy in-game gold with the gems and then use the gold to buy crafting materials on the Black Lion Trading Post. But there are a few things to keep in mind:

The experience gained toward leveling your character is not as great as it used to be so if you use an old crafting guide it may be misleading. You can still level up your character by leveling up your crafting, just not as much as originally. So I don’t think you can level your character to 80 solely by getting his chef level to 400 anymore.

You gain more crafting experience from discovering a new recipe than by making the same thing over and over again.

Do use a crafting guide because there are more efficient ways to level crafting, both time wise and cost.

Here is a link to a thread about crafting from the past that may be of some help.

Also as soon as you can get the gathering tools and a salvaging kit appropriate for the level of the maps you are in. So just starting out copper gathering tools and the cheapest salvaging kit. (Keep in mind that everyone can gather from the same node so no need to rush from fear of someone “steeling” it from you.) When determining what to do with stuff that has dropped you can salvage, sell to a vender in game or sell on the Black Lion Trading Post. I usually sell junk to an in-game vender then decide between salvaging or selling on the TP.

Edit to add: Although one character can level up all 8 crafting disciplines, they can only be active in 2 at a time. To switch will cost money so I would advise picking 4 characters – one from the soldier class (warrior or guardian) to level armor smith and weapon smith, one from the adventurer class (ranger, engineer or thief) to level leather worker and huntsman and one from the scholar class (necromancer, mesmer or elementalist) to level tailoring and artificer, and then one other to level chef and jeweler.

Best Race/Job Choice for Exploration

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lazuli.2098

Hi, i’m looking for a class/race with high mobility, since i’m probs just going to explore the whole map of Guild Wars 2. Don’t like to stay in one spot for hours

I’m glad I didn’t read the forums when I was first playing else I might not have chosen mesmer as my main. Since then I’ve heard they are difficult to level and very slow. I didn’t have any problem with leveling my main mesmer or getting 100% map completion with her. Now granted I have leveled my first 2 mesmers under the old trait system. And although the 3rd one I leveled under the new system her traits were grandfathered in, it was a much more painful process because I knew what traits I wanted and I had to wait until level 60 to get “create clone on dodge”.

And yes mesmers have no utility for a speed boost for running along but they are very mobile in combat. For increased speed there are runes (I have superior runes of the traveler on my main), sigils (I have superior sigil of speed on my 3rd mesmer’s focus) and food. And non of these take up a utility slot.

As for getting through trash mobs that you don’t want to bother with I love dodging forward leaving a clone in my place to draw aggro while I run merrily along. Also I use focus 4 to give a 33% increase in speed and then press focus 4 again to pull mobs in the area without drawing aggro. Also utilities such as blink for a teleport and decoy that will create a clone in your place while you turn invisible are useful getting through trash mobs as well as in combat.

I guess this is a long-winded way of saying any profession you enjoy playing will not seem hard or seem like it takes long to do map completion even if most players don’t appreciate the finer qualities of the profession.

Could You Play ONE Class Only?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Lazuli.2098

Lazuli.2098

I have 10 level 80s, 1 of each profession with 2 extra mesmers. Of the characters that I still have ranger is my oldest and first to 80. My first mesmer has 100% map and twice as much game play as any other character. Then comes my elementalist with 97% map completion. Those 3 also have 100% wvw map although I rarely play anything other than PvE. Those 3 along with my warrior have all 8 crafting disciplines to 400, and beyond for some of them. Of my 10 toons 3 are human, 1 charr, 2 asura, 2 norn and 2 sylvari. Each one has exotic armor and weapons with ascended amulets and a mix of other accessories.

I’ve enjoyed playing all of them but if I had to limit to one profession it would definitely be mesmer. But since I don’t have to I see no reason to limit myself. Once they all have 100% map completion some will be parked at jumping puzzle chests to be harvested each day and probably not used for much else.

I don’t tend to use rage as a response, prefer a more logical argument.

Let’s look at it this way, you’re in a room filled with sounds that irritates you, do you just sit there and decide you will like the sounds, or will those sounds continue to irritate you? For me they would continue to irritate me.

You could say leave the room, which is in effect don’t play the game. But that’s not an acceptable solution.

You could turn the sound off, but then the overall gaming experience is diminished. Playing games with no sound is not great either (maybe a matter of taste or with some people no choice).

Having a character with their arms up all the time is also irritating to some people as it’s just completely stupid to them. Stupid doesn’t always equal funny.

Which brings us back to there needed to be an opt out option.

It’s not the players fault, the fault is with ANet for not thinking it through fully and neglecting to add an opt out option.

An option to opt out would have been nice and appreciated by many. I was certainly glad that I could log out and back in to get rid of the bobble heads last year, which I found way more irritating. But we don’t always get what we want. How we respond is our choice. (And not playing is a valid option.)

…THANKS (sarcasm) ARENANET FOR RUINING MY EVENING AND CAUSING MY BLOOD TO BOIL. …

No one ruined your evening but yourself. You chose to respond the way you did. Take responsibility for your own happiness.

So they ruined their evening (and during the day) by playing GW2.

No, by responding as they did.

They didn’t choose to respond the way they did, they couldn’t have responded any other way. You either found it funny or didn’t and if you didn’t find it funny like I didn’t it was not a very pleasant experience.

OK, so you both did not find it pleasant, but did you also choose to respond in a rage?

It is not external stimulus that determines our happiness but how we choose to respond to it. The same truly tragic event can happen to different people, say loosing a limb. Some learn to overcome it and to use it to grow and make a happier and more fulfilled life. Others let the event “ruin their life”.

We choose, although some like to think they have no choice – it’s always someone or something else’s fault.

What i really don’t understand is how people can play a game and have so obviously no sense of fun whatsoever. What are you playing a game for if you can’t have fun? Silly, waste-of-time, irrational fun. No efficient farming, minmaxing, meta builds, grind gold, level up by crafting, speedclear dungeons.

Just spread your wings and fly. If you cannot smile about this, you might as well just not play games.

I think some people don’t know how to “play”. They compete.

Edit: I think in the future Anet should provide a toggle to opt out of the April Fool’s prank for those who want to play as usual. I know I just went for my dailies and didn’t really take advantage of the opportunity for fun that Anet provided. I would have appreciated to play as normal. But when I logged into the forums and saw how much fun some players had, how creative they were with using this joke, I envied and admired them. I’m looking forward to next April fool’s joke and I also hope Anet adds an airplane potion.
