Philosophy Shift to Less Choice

If you didn’t have that traffic control, the game would seem emptier and there are a whole lot of people out there who want to see a lot of other people.

Yes, that is now. The idea behind dailies was created when there was still lot of people playing, though. There’s a reason why this is the first incarnation of dailies with zone-specific achievements (there were region-specific ones before, but, from what i remember, they were less about making people go to those regions, and more about getting them out of Orr).

I’m also wondering if the reason the requirements are so specific is to generate more revenue via waypoint usage. Even though it is inconvenient I almost never pay for waypoints, except when I die. I use asura gates, waypoints in cities and run everywhere else. But with these new specific requirements for dailies I have paid for waypoints much more than I usually do.

I’m currently working on completing Blazeridge Steps on my engineer. In the past I could have stayed in that map to get 4 Ascalon events but instead I had to run her down to Fields of Ruin, which she’s already got, to do 4 events. Was this requirement any harder than doing 4 general Ascalon events? No, but it was more inconvenient because I refused to pay for the waypoint. Did I linger to play after I got the 4 events? No. I probably would have finished 100%ing Blazeridge Steps if the old daily system was still in effect.

As others have mentioned in this thread the old dailies were easier for me to weave into normal play. For example if there was a requirement for Shiverpeak events then I could use my character in Timberline Falls and combine that daily with working on personal story there or combine it with a different character who was getting 100 % completion of Frostgorge, say. As a consequence I would usually stay playing longer than it would take to get the dailies.

With the specificity of the requirements now I will most likely not have someone in Wayfarer’s, say, so most go there specifically to get the daily requirement. As a consequence since the new dailies I have not played any longer than it took to get the new dailies, if I bothered to get them at all.

More players logging in to get their daily laurels may pad the login statistics but I doubt that translates into more time playing the game.

:… But as some one who also dabbles in WvW. I understand that there wasn’t enough variety in WvW dailies. This attempt was to address something, the game has gotten wrong over the last 2 years. Balance. Everyone should enjoy their game mode equally. And not have it so loop-sided.

So you think removing variety from PVE players is the way to balance between the 3 game modes? Misery loves company I guess. Just because Anet can’t bother to come up with more variety for WvW and PvP doesn’t mean they should remove variety from PvE.

indeed, but according to those who participated (or said they did) in that CDI, there is very little, or not at all, correlation between what was suggested and what was implemented.

But why were they looking to change the trait system at all?

It really is a shame how it seems like everything is focused on the individual player instead of the groups of players!

In GW2 limiting your support to only healing will not provide much support at all. So if you want to stick to a support role you can 1. follow advice given by others in this thread and learn how to provide other kinds of support in addition to healing, 2. stick to role-playing or 3. play another game – your choice.

Most of the half decent looking armour has something dopey that (in MY opinion, before people jump on me) really ruins it’s look like one giant pauldron then a flimsy piece of tin on the other shoulder, or one leg clad in armour and the other bare (where’s the sense there?)

Totally agree.

@Kross

OTOH, you don’t deal with gaming communities. Ignoring them is actually often the smartest thing to do (yes I know that includes them ignoring me) because frankly players are terrible at telling you what they want. Or rather, they’ll tell you what they think they want, which isn’t what is going to make them spend money on your company.

There is a difference between ignoring customers, and not always following their wants.

It is true that sometimes players can want too much, or the developer just knows that something is better. …

As far as accommodating customers requests, Anet is kitten ed if they do and kitten ed if they don’t. According to the mod’s remarks in this thread the reason we got this totally screwed up trait system at all was because Anet listened to the GW1 whiners who wanted to make GW2 more like GW1. The original GW2 trait system was fine the way it was. The addition of free retraits retraits from anywhere was the only thing needed to make it great.

Map Completion - how to

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Lazuli.2098

Lazuli.2098

Beside the good advice above if you will only be using your character for map completion and nothing else then you may want to start in the center of everything and radiate out. But if you will be jumping around the map for whatever reason then learning how the various maps are connected together would help. Of some help are a couple of shortcuts to far-flung areas – the Asura gate from Divinity’s Reach to Fields of Ruin and the Asura gates from the 3 Orders’ headquarters to Fort Trinity in Straights of Devastation.

Use the Divinity’s Reach Asura gate to Fields of Ruins for there and Blazeridge Steppes. Do the steps of the Personal Story up through the battle of Fort Trinity (level 70 of the story) so your character can use the Asura gates in the Orders’ headquarters for fast access to Orr, Mount Malestrom and Spark Fly Fen. I usually use the one in the Priory’s headquarters in Lornar’s Pass since it’s so close to Lion’s Arch.

No it wouldn’t if implemented properly. Not at all. It adds a third option to how to play the game and you can play it your way still.

Only if they were not able to be used in battle, were invisible in towns and around NPC that characters need to talk to, gave no advantages such as speed buffs (EDIT: not any additonal speed buff above the current 15%, 25% and 33% increases) , and were culled (EDIT2: along with their riders) when too many players were in one map that there was lag.

Make a travel from Rata Sum to the Fields of Ruin just only on feet using no speed buffs, no movement skilsl, just plain normal running and repeat again, that Tyria is small.

It would be a matter of a minute or 2, depending on how long the loading screens take.

1. From Rata Sum take WPs to get to the Asura gate to Lion’s Arch.
2. Go through gate to Lion’s Arch.
3. Run to Asura gate to Divinity’s Reach.
4. Go through gate to Divinity’s Reach.
5. Take WP to Rurikton district.
6. Run to Asura gate to Fields of Ruin.
7. Go through gate to Fields of Ruin.

Anyone who WANTS to run over that territory without taking WPs or using Asura gates or using speed buffs or movement skills, that’s their choice and their problem, not mine or the game’s.

I have 10 characters, all level 80. 2 Sylvari, one male, one female. 2 Norn, 1 male, 1 female. 2 Asura 1 male, 1 female. 1 female Charr. 3 humans, 1 male and 2 female. I’ve got 1 of every profession except mesmer which I have 3.

The reason I have 3 mesmers is because they are my favorite and I used to like leveling. There are so many different builds/weapon combos that I wanted to try but back when it cost money and even more of a pain finding a trainer to retrait it was easier to just make more than one.

Leveling was fun

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lazuli.2098

I have to disagree with OP. Levelling still is fun for me. I have 20 characters and 18 of them are level 80, all except one I levelled by exploring maps, mostly the starter zones. I reckon if you’re looking to spend less than 100 hours getting to 80, then you’re looking to level too quickly.

Having said that, ArenaNet have provided this thing called a [Tome of Knowldege] which lets any character gain one level instantly. Also, every character on their birthday (both first and second currently) they are given a scroll which levels any character under level 20 to level 20. I am going to end up getting more of these than I can use, so I don’t understand why people complain about levelling being too slow, and I can’t understand what more players who do complain expect ArenaNet to do for them.

I had a long response written up for your post, but then I thought “It’s just not worth it” You probably wouldn’t get it anyway.

Right there with you.

Nowhere did the OP mention that it took too long to level with the NPE. They only mentioned that is was no longer as much fun EDIT and the unlocking was slow.

Not kidding at all – my point was that multiple mesmers are effective and a lot of fun too. It sounds like you had a similar experience.

I remember one of my first experiences in WvW a small group of my server came across an opposing small group that had at least 2 or 3 mesmers that looked alike. 2 were exact. When they got all their clones up it was impossible to tell the real mesmers in the scramble of a fight.

Edit: Playing a mesmer is just fun in and of itself. When I was just learning mesmer I came across another that seemed to have a similar style or at least we just meshed. We cleared out a cave full of ettins that was little challenging for such low level characters but it was very exhilarating. Playing with another mesmer could be very fun.

I’ve got 10 at level 80, one of every profession plus 2 extra mesmers. They were all created before the trait system was ruined so I had fun leveling them. I used to like leveling characters. I wanted one of each profession in case if I ever got into a 1vs1 player situations I’d know what to expect. Also it helps when playing pve to understand the mechanics of any teammates for combos and other synergies.

By trying all professions you can discover which ones you really want to play. I tried ranger first, then elementalist but my favorite is mesmer. I tried a warrior somewhere in there but he didn’t last long. My 4th oldest character is a warrior and although he is not in my top half of favorites, he’s not my least favorite and I do enjoy playing him. So you might discover that you really like a profession that you never thought you would.

Usually a single character cannot take the temple from the invaders so if there is not a group attacking it on the instance of the map you are on then exit the game or switch characters then come back to your character and hope that you are in an instance where the temple is already under Pact control or there is a group you can join to do it.

Yeah, the previous system was decently functional . . . but it had its glaring issues (paying for trait resets)

Paying for trait resets isn’t a glaring issue is it? How expensive was it?

The big problem, more important than the money cost, with trait reset was the need to speak to an npc to reset them, so you couldn’t change them when you wanted

This. In fact because it was inconvenient to reset traits is the reason I started a second and third memsmer, and because I enjoyed leveling with the old system.

Mesmer or Warrior - semi new player

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Lazuli.2098

Mesmer is my favorite profession and I loved leveling them under the old trait and leveling system, but under this new trait acquire system it could be a real pain. Part of the fun with mesmer for me was trying different builds – experimenting with traits, utility skills and weapons combos. Even leveling my third mesmer, whose traits were grandfathered in, under this new system seemed boring waiting for her to have access to some higher level traits.

I never thought I would enjoy playing a melee profession so didn’t try warrior until my 4th toon. Although not my favorite I still enjoy playing him and of course I play melee with all my mesmers most of the time although some situations are much better with other weapons. Guardians and mesmers can use almost as many weapons as a warrior and in fact I use more variety on my mesmer than on my warrior.

The Mad King says is where he makes bad jokes then says something like “The Mad King says laugh” The players then type /laugh (or whatever he tells you to do) in the chat box. There is an instruction on the side of the UI also telling you what to do. If you know how to type emotes like /laugh or /bow, it’s pretty clear from what he says and what the people around are doing.

At the end the chest can be opened up. In 2012 there was the witches hat and 2013 and 2014, a mask.

As fate would have it I stumbled upon a game of it in LA this evening. I managed to type in /cower when prompted as I was running through. Back in 2012 GW2 was my first MMO and I had no idea about emotes until the heart in Ascalon where you have to sit by the lonely cows, threaten some of them, bow to some, etc.

I very seldom visit the gem store, maybe once in the last few months. The first hat and horns showed up in my ranger’s pack a little before Sept 14, when that picture of my necro wearing it was taken. I’m pretty sure it was in the 2 year b Day gift.

Edit: I did buy the phoenix staff for my elementalist in the beginning of Oct, which was around her 2nd Bday. Could they have given me the witch’kitten as lagniappe?

Did you play during Halloween of 2012?

Not much if at all.

Did you play Mad King Says during that time?

No. How do you play? I think I tried the jumping puzzle once and some doors in different areas and did go to Black Citadel for Prince Thorn thing.

If so you got the witches hat then and undoubtably the horns also as they were during that time. Possibly they were on a character that you didn’t take to talk to the NPC that changes town clothes to armor until recently and then forgot that you did so. Imo this is much more likely than you got two drops that are so rare that no one else has ever reported it.

Not likely unless I played Mad king says in my sleep. Also I took all 10 of my characters to get their town cloths converted when everything changed over.

Edit: Ok I looked it up. I may have played it back then but definitely did not “win”. And if I had gotten the hat I would probably have deleted it long before the change over to make room in my bank.

I logged in gw2 this morning, as every so often I return for a short bit. I was actually told that only noobs need the “OP traits” by some “pro gamer” (he/she said pro gamers do not need the crutch of traits) . It has gotten very weird in the game.

In addition, I noted players still having no traits. I make it a point to talk to friendly players and see what they think, say, how they feel. Those who began after the patch just seem to feel that traits are optional extras. They have no builds, really.

A while back, I met someone who had placed points in the various trait lines, and had no traits. Just the minor adepts in each line….I was informed this was the “balanced build” that people should be using if they know how to play. I did not argue, I am just interested in how this has affected things.

I just cannot see this as a good thing.

With the whole new trait system I can understand not wanting to jump through the hoops but this sounds like “sour grapes” to justify not having any traits. It results in another aspect of the “dumbing down” of GW2. I feel sorry for new players and sad for the game.

This has been the first time I’ve ever seen them without gem cards in this store. They had TONS for other games on their shelves, just none for GW2. I just found it interesting since I am pretty sure there wasn’t someone buying them out of these cards.

One possibility that comes to mind is the store may have seen a decrease in gems cards being bought after April so cut back on their orders. But with recent free trials there may be an influx of new players who are now buying gems cards.
