The Ranger profession just feels like a completely rushed job that didn’t have much thought go into it.
Trait lines are a mess, they don’t make sense, traits are bugged, plain bad numbers wise, don’t have any synergy, or are so badly bugged that they don’t even do anything.
Weapons are weak damage wise, but have rather low utility so damage is all they do.
Pets have the potential to be strong, for example a jaguar with Pet’s Prowess and Sick ‘Em can hit bosses for 5-6k, but that doesn’t matter because they die the moment the boss even considers the possibility of casting an AoE spell.
Base health and armour are rather low, so the ranger is forced to pick up a lot of vitality and/or toughness, further gimping their damage.
On top of that, with the release of Ascended items, pets are lagging behind stats-wise.
Ranger weapons also have no idea if they want to be power or condition damage weapons, meaning that you should get both power/precision AND condition damage, which just leads to both physical and condition damage being incredibly mediocre.
These are just my observations from playing a ranger since BWE1.
kitten I miss BWE1, when rangers were actually good.
I still don’t get the “reducing AoE damage on pets would allow 2 rangers to duo a dungeon” argument, to be honest.
Warriors can already solo a lot of dungeons and even Lupicus, while putting in not even half the effort a ranger would have to to get Lupicus even to half HP.
Why are Warriors allowed to solo content but Rangers aren’t allowed to duo it? What kind of stupid decision is that?
I’m also strongly doubting Robert’s dungeon experiences by now.
Yes, you can clear a dungeon with a party with 3 rangers. But can you do it within any reasonable amount of time? Hell no. You’d take 3 times as long and require a LOT more effort than if you were to replace those rangers with warriors or guardians. That’s the reason why I rolled a guardian after 3-4 months of playing a ranger. Why put in twice the effort to get half the reward?
Oh, by the way, make the Jade Maw stop attacking pets, turrets, and minions.
Last night we were doing FotM and we had a ranger. 75% of the time the Maw would target the pet instead of the players.
We actually saw it target a defeated pet 6 times in a row.
No, because signet builds are terrible and should be discouraged.
The only remotely good one is signet auramancer. I cringe whenever I see a 3sig ranger/5sig warrior/3sig necro/4sig guardian/etc.
The sword rangers couldn’t make it to this thread because they kept getting pulled back to their attack target.
Here’s a thought I just had.
What if we made f3 use a defensive dodge skill instead of returning to the player, and we re-did the “Guard” and “Avoid Combat” button to better serve the function of “return and Heel” and “Attack and be aggro”
So it would be f1 to attack target, f2 to use special skill, f3 to use defensive ‘dodge’ skill, and our stance button would then be tweaked.
Yes please. This sounds like a dream come true. Don’t listen to people crying about micromanagement. Don’t play a pet class if you don’t want to manage your pet.
To be honest, I think this problem goes beyond just pets. It’s also a matter of the ranger’s traits.
A lot of them are buggy, or simply so ineffective that they might as well do nothing (Sharpened Edges, anyone?). On top of that, the trait lines don’t make any sense. What are traps and beastmastery traits doing in the Skirmishing line?
Wouldn’t traps be more suited to Wilderness Survival?
Why are greatsword and spear traits in Wilderness Survival and Nature Magic?
And let’s not even start on a lot of utilities. Spirits die in a single hit, signets are honestly boring and don’t help your team very much, what’s left is traps and survival, since pet shouts aren’t really worthwhile apart from Guard.
Then there’s the severe nerfs to Ranger weapons during the betas, when they were honestly too strong. These nerfs were needed, but not in one fell swoop and at such a great magnitude. Balancing should be done in more careful iterations. This is something that Arenanet has been lacking in since GW1 (Smiter’s Boon/Paragons).
There’s also the issue of mainhand sword being a death sentence because the autoattack chain roots you into place, preventing you from dodging and sometimes even cancelling your dodge animation. I could go on.
Rangers need a thorough looking at that goes far beyond just pets. But that’s not Robert’s territory.
Rangers don’t just need a buff, they need a complete rework of their traits and utility skills.
- Having your pet dodge automatically when it was you that actually needed the dodge is a big waste in dps
- In chaotic fights, it’s hard having to keep full attention on dodging for your pet, while you yourself is busy staying alive and dodge incoming damage
Point 1 can be avoided by making the pet passively attacks, instead of actively dodging. This would not break its attack animations, much like the greatsword’s 3rd autoattack.
The second part will always be an inherent problem with pet classes and cannot be fixed. You’ll have to learn to watch your pet.
The term you’re looking for is “evades”.
Dodging has a separate animation. Evading means all attacks against you miss while you’re still able to use skills.
Making the pet evade when the Ranger dodges would fix a LOT of issues.
And @Aridia, not only does that solution not make sense, it’d be horribly broken as well to be able to make your pet teleport at any given moment.
What if Shield of Judgment was a cone AoE knockdown, or applied Aegis to all allies in the AoE?
Aside from Shield of Judgment being incredibly lacklustre, there’s also the issue of the abysmal shield skill cooldowns. 30 seconds and 40 seconds? There’s elites that have lower cooldowns. Okay I lied. But it’s pretty close.

Aaaand Ranger gets ignored once again. It’s GW1 all over again.
So how about that Paragon rework, eh?
Every profession gets massive buffs while Ranger is ignored, what’s left to discuss? This is basically every single balance patch.
I want to fulfil my life-long dream.
I cannot do it with the current Norn facial hair styles.
Still nothing for rangers in today’s patch…
Pls read the OP´s topic because your entire comment is irrelevant,if you want to continue complaining better go to another thread since this one is obviously not meant for people Who dont like gw2,as it was obvious in the thread title,as it was obvious in what the OP said. But you still want to show off what a complete tool you are by ignoring these things and showing your pessimistic crap, wich not alot of people but yourself careabout anyways.
Please realize that this is a DISCUSSION board. A discussion usually has multiple sides. If there’s only one side, it’s not a discussion but an agreement.
That being said, GW2 has a very solid base but require some serious polish in major parts of the game.
-Class balance: Thieves, Guardians, and Mesmers are the undisputed gods of PvP. In PvE, class balance is slightly less important, but having PvP dominated by three professions is a bad thing.
Which brings me to number two:
-Stealth has no mechanical counters. There is no stealth detection, you can finish people while stealthed, taking damage or using movement/teleportation skills does not reveal you. It’s ruining WvWvW. I’m looking mainly at Shadow Refuge here.
-Population spread:
The appropriately named FotM was the final nail in the coffin for this. Everyone just sits in LA spamming LFG FotM since it’s the single best place to get items and money, and finding a party to explore a zone or do any dungeons except FotM, CoF, or AC takes longer than completing the dungeon itself does. Making FotM a part of the monthly achievement again did not help.
I could go on, but the point is clear. The base game is fantastic, and I could not go back to the old MMO questing format, but there are some serious issues which prevent the game as a whole from being truly great.
It’s not only that, but with the release of more and more Ascended gear, I fear that pets will get worse and worse because their stats won’t scale up to Ascended levels.
Their stats scale up to Rare equipment at best as it is, it’s going to be quite a big gap from Rare to Ascended.
Started on the path of the Monkey’s Fist, you have.
Talented, you are. Much potential, I see.
Still confused why this feature was released before one of the biggest bugs still hasn’t been fixed, Fractal Disconnections…
Don’t get me wrong I loved the make-over feature in the first game and used it alot and see myself using this one aswell, I just feel as if there were more important issues out there than changing my headband from green to blue.
Here’s the funny part: I’ve heard multiple people say that you CAN’T change accessory colours currently.
Maybe you should check the Gem Store now…
Can I just say, that despite being glad about this, there’s something you forgot to test?
That is, you can’t see sylvari glow in the re-customization window.
I tried changing my Guardian’s appearance but had to cancel because I couldn’t see what the glow effect I picked did. This is not just a recustomization thing, I remember when making my sylvari that I had no idea what the ‘glow’ section meant.
I knew what the section meant and how it worked, the problem here is that it is simply not visible in the preview screen. You can set glow colour and intensity, but you can’t see the effect. I think it’s a problem with the Light setting.

I hope they have a GOOD explanation for going back on everything they promised, but I fear they’ll come up with some throwaway excuse.
If this goes through I’ll guess I’ll try going back to GW1 or something…
How is it that you guys can read “slightly more powerful” and conclude that exotics are automatically obsolete and it’s the end of the world? O.o Have you noticed ANYTHING Anet’s done so far in GW1 or GW2? If they offer ANY sort of significant game advantage I can guarantee you they’ll take less than a week of casual gaming to obtain.
Stop judging Arenanet based on the standard set by other treadmill games when there’s no precedent for it and you have NO information on what Ascended gear will actually be.
Take off the blindfold and see that this isn’t the same Arenanet that made GW1.
Hell, it’s not the same Arenanet that started development on GW2.
How many of the things they said in the years before the release were actually true?
Account wide dyes? Scrapped.
Personal story choices will matter? Hahaha, no. You get 30 levels of “personal” story, then you’re heading to Trahearneville.
Dungeon rewards? Turned into a grind.
Cash shop for cosmetics only? Boosts everywhere ever since they hired that Nexon woman.
The entire article about town clothing and armour? You get one (1) set of town clothing and that’s it.
Why do you think it’ll be a grind?!?!?! Even EXOTICS weren’t a grind. You could get a full set of exotics by doing 1-2 dungeons a day for a week! You guys are basing all this hysteria on ONE sentence in a MAGAZINE and your perceptions of treadmill games from the past.
Why don’t you WAIT to hear from Anet about the items and how they’re acquired. Right now we know NOTHING about how they’ll work or how they’ll acquired. Jeez, is EVERYONE on the forums a Chicken l\Little?
Exotic armour isn’t a grind? Having to do the same dungeon 30 times is rather repetitive.
Also, Arenanet linked these articles on their Twitter/FB pages. What’s in there is legit.
And everyone on the forums has some experience with games, and they see the slippery slope. You’re just being a fanboy/girl/it.
We’re being realistic here.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaand there we go.
The ship has started sinking.
They lied about half the stuff they said pre-release, and now post-release they’re going to go back on the other half.
Welcome to World of Guildcraft 2: Electric Geargrindaloo
The ultimate dungeon group is, in my somewhat limited experience:
1 support Guardian with a hammer and an Altruistic Healing build
1 support Mesmer for ethereal fields and Time Warp
3 shout/banner warriors
It could be worse, yesterday we killed the Howling King, only for Hodgins to bug out and not start the final cinematic, which meant no final reward.
So we went through the entire dungeon path only to get no reward other than the 15s you loot from the King.
What’s your frame of reference? 3 days and a few PvP matches?
You can’t say anything about the profession in that short time frame.
Your claim that you’re “utilizing it properly” is unfounded. It’s like a newly graduated biologist saying that his views on astrophysics are well-founded and all those people who spent their life studying the universe are wrong.
“I played this for 3 days, clearly I’m an expert and you’re all wrong!”
You didn’t play ranger during the betas. You didn’t play it before the unnecessary shortbow nerf.
Don’t act like you know what you’re talking about.
Just roll Warrior for PvE, it’s Izzy’s pet class and it’ll never be nerfed.
Or Thief for PvP because lol heartseeker.
I don’t like bumping my own threads, but I’m not sure what I need to do here.
Do I still need to change my password or can I keep my current one?
Why don’t people turn off the auto attack on Sword 1?
Because repetitive strain injury is a horrible thing.
I tried using a longbow and I was just thoroughly disappointed.
No utility, no damage, a kiting move that roots you, the only good thing was the knockback.
A shortbow gives you more damage, more mobility, more control, more utility.
I cringe whenever I see a Ranger with a longbow and a bear pet. Bonus points if they’re using 3 signets.
Well, the shortbow is a true condition damage weapon, nearly all of its skills are about bleeding or poison. You’ll most likely be using a Sigil of Earth for additional bleeding or a Signet of Nullification to make up for the Ranger’s mediocre condition removal, so you’ll want Condition Damage and Precision.
Now you can choose to get exotic dungeon or karma gear for Precision/Toughness/Condition Damage for a more resilient build, or you can go Precision/Power/Condition damage, which leaves you a lot more squishy, but gives you higher damage and it’s easier to acquire.
On a side note, having played a Ranger to level 80, I would strongly advise against using a Longbow. Its only use is Barraging off walls in WvW, and even at that it’s rather mediocre.
For your own good, turn off post-processing. It just makes everything blurry and washed out, and will permanently blind you if you ever run into a big reflective surface in-game.
So, in the blog post, you are requesting everyone to choose a new, non-blacklisted password. I can respect that, it is the most logical step to prevent more hacking from happening.
But here’s the rub: When the hacking had just started, I also got a strange login request. I denied it, and then created a unique e-mail address for GW2 alone, and used new passwords for both the e-mail address and GW2.
I changed my password very recently, and I had just gotten used to it.
Will I also be forced to change my password again?
Just in case you’re still interested, have a low settings screenshot of the sword.
It’s a shame these weapons aren’t exotics.
How are you making those images? Dye, then to login screen, then use photoshop or kitten to add them together?
I just think it’s funny how they can “fix” stuff like this within a few days, yet Orr is still completely broken, Necro’s are still plagued by bugs, engineers lose yet another blast finisher, and Mesmer traits are still a total mess.
Just a friendly notice that yes, your pet’s damage will be low if you put all your traits into Marksmanship and ignore Beastmastery and Skirmishing.
My pet isn’t 40% of my damage at all.
More like 60-70%.
Find Irish/Welsh/Scottish name.
Done.
Nearly every sylvari NPC you encounter will have the same naming convention. They don’t seem to bother with titles or last names.
Medium T1 cultural armour.
Dyes are Evergreen and Wrath.
A spirit did it.
Not sure if this is a bug, but it’s extremely annoying:
If you have the Natural Healing trait that gives your pet passive health regeneration, it’ll constantly make that rebreather sound while in combat.
It’s very useful in PvE but my friends are starting to get frustrated with my pet standing next to them mimicking Darth Vader.

Stopped reading when I noticed the 3 signets in your build.
Those builds are boring, ineffective, and not at all suited for group play.
Also, your build calculator is horribly outdated. Use the one at www.gw2skills.net instead.
Sorry Lance, but carpal tunnel is not on my list of “things to get this month”.
Disabling the autoattack would require you to mash 1 all the time, which is exhausting and unhealthy.
I’d rather have that Arenanet makes us able to dodge out of the leaps on Kick and Pounce.
Torch with the Offhand Training perk is delicious. It nearly doubles Bonfire’s radius.
Combine with Monarch’s Leap for an easy Fire Aura combo.
At the start of big wave events I just drop that in front of the enemies and watch them all burn to death for easy looting.
The beast gear for a longbow ranger is a shortbow. Honestly, the longbow is terrible and not worth using.
Its damage is low and it has nearly zero utility.
