Mesmer confessions

The other day I was thinking about rolling a second mesmer for my main alt… 8D
(Other professions aren’t nearly as fun to play!)

I was actually considering this too. A gigantic burly Norn.

Not to mention, first the mesmer must successfully land the attack. Then the phantasm must survive long enough to attack. Finally, the phantasm must land the attacks on a target that is in range and not blocking, dodging, or invulnerable. Other professions must only worry about landing the attack, and many of those skills are even more “powerful”.

Apples and Telephones.
Other classes’ attacks don’t cycle every 6 seconds on their own.

I disagree with the idea that phantasms should either. I think they should be decoupled from our illusion counter and vanish after the first attack.

Anyone who knows what they’re doing, any boss who sneezes kills it.

So apparently we’re being “balanced” around the idea that our opponents are too stupid to sneeze in the general direction of our phantasms until 3 of them are up, then leave them there for the duration of a fight.

Even big, stupid dragons who stand around waiting to be killed by the giant asura lasers do enough to kill phantasms.

I think I have to agree with this one. The majority of phantasms don’t make it passed their first swings, they shouldn’t be balanced around the fact that they can. Heck, I’d say to go one step further and rather than keeping them as “pets” just make them a graphical effect of an attack instead. Use greatsword 4 and it animates as an illusion spinning and cutting the enemy rather than spawning a pet that then spins through the enemy.

Count me among the voices who say you can either have a delay OR they can be canceled out by dodge, block, etc., not both. It’s already between 3/4 second to a full second cast time where the enemy can read the tell that we’re casting a summon, then another half second to two seconds before said summon attacks. One and a half to three seconds between pressing the button and the damage happening is ridiculous. Especially when a warrior can hundred blade me or a thief can do whatever voodoo they do for more than my HP in the time it would take for my duelist to attack once. That’s just not right, and it’s nowhere near balanced. No other class that I’ve played yet(80 ranger/warrior/necro/mesmer) has had so many ways to counter an ability(blind/dodge/block initial summon, kill summon, dodge summons attack) like we do now.

I really didn’t mind the phantasms being given a to-hit check. It didn’t really have any effect on me since I actually watch my enemies while I’m fighting them, but this “fix” completely neutered my Mesmer.

Until something is done to fix them, it looks like my favorite character is going to sit on the shelf with my Ranger gathering dust. But hey, they’re Asura, so at least it’s going to be pretty roomy up there.

Did my first jumping puzzle as a Norn...

I go back and forth between my Norn and Asura characters with jumping puzzles. It did take me a while to adjust to the camera glitches and what not with the Norn characters, but I’m only slightly slower doing the WvW puzzle with the Norn now than I am the Asura.

One problem with Asura... Tiny weapons!

MMOJumper.8504

The weapon scale thing happens with my Norn Warrior and Necromancer as well. It’s most noticeable on my Necromancer. His staff shrinks a ton when it’s holstered.

It would be nice if my Asura’s weapons were big enough to actually look at. Right now the pistols are laughably small, especially some of the skinnier ones. They look like they’re about big around as a drinking straw.

Asura aren’t the only ones, there’s a noticeable seam on the human female model when they’ve got their belly showing. They’re cut in half just below the belly button. There’s another where the human male head attaches to the neck if you’ve got short/no hair. i’m sure the other races have it as well, I just haven’t looked for it.

EB Puzzle and how to make it fun

I do agree that siege shouldn’t be allowed in there. It’s cheap and takes the fun out of actually trying to run it. The landscape in the puzzle makes for some of the most fun fights I’ve ever had in WvW. I wouldn’t want to see player abilities disabled, fighting on the rafters in the dark room is just awesome. Though I’m not the type to just knock people off of stuff I’ll fight them outright before I do that.

Like others have said, you can take on several different roles with the various classes. I’ve taken 4 characters to 80 so far. They’re Asura Ranger and Mesmer, and Norn Warrior and Necromancer. Of those characters the Mesmer and Necromancer are my favorites and are the only two I continue to play after they’ve reached the cap.

My necromancer is a staff/well spec that is up close and personal more often than not. I traded damage for HP and Toughness, but my attack rating is still sitting at 2700 thanks to my condition damage and having power in my gear. I use a Staff most often and have a scepter and dagger as my off-weapoins for extra conditions. He’s sitting at 29k HP and is built to be as much of a tank as anybody can really be in this game.

My Mesmer is the exact opposite of my Necromancer. All of his points are spent to maximize damage. I carry a Greatsword and either dual swords or sword/pistol depending on my mood. He is built to spike damage and confuse enemies. He does spend a lot of time jumping in and out of melee combat as I switch between greatsword, which for Mesmers is basically a rail gun, and melee swords in fights.

There are so many different ways to play characters that you really should just try as many as you’re interested in and test out different ways to play them until you find the ones that suit your playstyle best. Ask 100 different people and you’ll get 100 different builds and suggestions. Whatever you end up with, just remember that dodge is your friend and staying mobile is a must.

Has been harass by another race/player?

I can understand RPing, I often Rp racial prejudices for laughs

Sadly one of our guild genuinely hates Asura and never stops nagging me over chat and has even blocked me from parties on the basis of my racial choice – he feels that all the “stupid gnome rip off” don’t belong in “his game” and feels they should never have been introduced in EotN

So he kittenes and moans and kicks Asura out his party so he doesn’t have to share the same space with them.

That guy would be kicked from my guild in an instant. If you’re in one that puts up with that nonsense, perhaps find another, or talk to the leadership about him.

There was an item in the store at one point that was supposed to work that way but it was either bugged or put in there accidentally so it was quickly removed. Locking away boss fights from waypoints....

MMOJumper.8504

Finally, in your last post I get your meaning. You are saying that people are dying to bypass a particularly difficult boss. They respawn at the waypoint and don’t go back to fight that boss.

I’m sure their are other ways to handle that sort of problem than preventing respawning at the waypoint. For example, if there is a chest reward, they could require that all bosses be killed before the chest can be opened.

If that was directed at me: I wasn’t saying anything of the like. I was saying that if you’re relying on zerging to take out bosses your group is doing it wrong and you should find people who know how to play instead of knowing how to rack up repair bills.

If you die more than once or twice to a boss you should rethink your strategy. For the Front Door and Teleporter paths for example, he’ll do three different kinds of rings. Dragon’s tooth, which is just the normal sized small circle, the cone attack, and the spike rings. Move out of the dragon’s tooth circles. His cone attack has circles that get larger the farther you are from him, but that’s nothing to be worried about, just don’t stand in front of him. There are 5 total spike rings, 4 that have ice patches in them, and one that has an ice patch growing in it. If you’re in one of the four that has an ice patch already in it you’ll be fine on top of the ice. If you’re in the one where the ice patch is growing, move to the outer ring or dodge out completely because it’s going to pierce the center of the circle. Don’t stand on top of eachother and you’ll be fine. If you’re all using ranged to fight him, getting eachother out of the crystal shouldn’t be that big a deal. If you’re all melee pile on top of him and pound away, when you see red circles, count to 2 and dodge.

This game isn’t a “hardcore” raiding game, there’s no reason for lockouts or penalties beyond the norm for getting killed occasionally in a dungeon. If you’re in a group that’s rushing in and getting a couple of hits off then getting killed just to do it again, leave the group. You’ll be there for hours for something that should take at most 45 minutes.

Locking away boss fights from waypoints....

Posted by: MMOJumper.8504

MMOJumper.8504

Death itself is the annoyance to be avoided, the majority of the waypoints are a significant distance away from the active boss and if zerging is the chosen strategy for your group you still run the risk of the boss resetting. Having a group of people who actually know what they’re doing and just don’t die is the way to go. You don’t need to have forced lockouts to have that.

If you’re running into the zerg mentality for boss fights I’d suggest finding a different group of people to run with or joining a good guild.

Or just don’t die in in boss fights. The CoE bosses in there aren’t all that hard if you pay attention and don’t listen to the guy who says to jump on top of him and melee him to death.

Boss fight lockouts aren’t fun. There’s no reason you shouldn’t be allowed to respawn and get back in the fight as opposed to being forced to sit on the sidelines until the fight’s either over or failed.

It may or may not have been someone RPing who just doesn’t like Asura but if it was in tells rather than Say chat they were probably just being a jerk. I know in say chat I call Norn that aren’t as big as I am “Tiny” and will refer to Sylvari as various plants instead of their name or race. As in “Hey Fern, take root and talk to Hodgins while we do the heavy lifting.”

So far my experience has been the more bank slots you have the more you need. I bought one extra tab and thought that would be more than enough. Now I’ve got four that are full, and none of it’s stuff I want get rid of. Hopefully they’ll go on sale this weekend, but for some reason I doubt it will happen.

So you bought that account? Don’t see how you can be lvl 80 and not have played with your necro before.

During the Lost Shores event, everyone was scaled to level 80. It’s quite possible.

I think they’re more referring to the named exotic gear they’re wearing, that character is 80.

Mini-Pets and the Hero screen

MMOJumper.8504

I’ve been talking to a lot of my guild lately about things we wanted to go on sale this weekend and Mini-pets came up as the number three thing behind bank and character slots.

Most of my guild loves vanity pets, myself included, but most of us don’t feel the need or want to buy them in this game because of the way they’re handled in both storage and inventory.

A “simple” suggestion came up that I thought I would bring here to get your take on: Remove them from the bank collections and add an account wide tab to the Hero screen that we can use to activate them.

Other games have done similar things with their vanity pets. The ones that immediately come to mind are Champions Online and WoW; both have a tab on their Character sheets for them.

I know for myself I only have the Mini Rytlock that came with my CE who never sees the light of day and I have no points in the Miniature Collection achievement simply because the minis take up an inventory spot. If they were in their own tab that I could access anywhere I’d have purchased several by now. In their current state I just don’t want them, even though I love collecting them.

I'm having second thoughts

I wish I had been FRAPSing yesterday when a small group of us pushed a zerg into a tower and held them there for about an hour and a half yesterday. It got to the point that they started targeting me and my other necro friend. More often than not we came out on top. A couple of skilled Well/Mark necromancers can easily turn a losing fight into a victory, especially when they communicate and work as a team.

The truth is, people expect certain builds when they see certain classes. More often than not they’ve prepared for those builds, the cookie cutter power necro is one of those right now. If you show up with something completely different and are good at it, you’ll turn their world upside down.

My two Norn characters are a both Male. One is a Warrior and the other is a Necromancer. Both use the biggest body type because I want them to have an imposing battlefield presence. I picture the Necromancer as the type of enemy that people see coming and they know their day is about to get worse, especially in WvW hit squads.
