The only reason I play GW2 is because Mesmer exists.
I’m in the same boat. I tried finding other games that have that kind of playstyle, but other than some clunky Skyrim mods, the search turned up blank.
Some day you’ll actually bother to split balancing for the kitten formats.
Actaully, some day they won’t because balance is so inconsequential to PVE in this game that it can be ignored with no consequence, other than players that complain about PVE balance regardless of what happens anyways.
I’m not against splitting but the reality is that if splitting was going to happen, it would have happened already.
Having to retool your gear because of eSports shenanigans isn’t what I’d call inconsequential – especially when the nerfs are directed at players who just have to click a button to change their setup. Putting off getting a particular legendary on a character because they might be too good in a separate game mode isn’t inconsequential. And need we repeat the truths Zenith explained when it comes to Ranger pets?
It has happened to some degree (Revealed duration and pet/minion/illusion/summon damage mitigation), which is just another weird inconsistency to add to the pile.

I think you guys are horribly overreacting. I read the patch notes myself, and immediately though “From a PVE perspective, this doesn’t mean a darn thing for me”. The tweaks are minor and in the grand scheme mean little to nothing for any of the classes that were changed.
I take it you don’t play Mesmer, right? Persistence of Memory went from a six second reduction in phantasm recharge to three: and that’s under the most optimal settings. I wouldn’t call a 50 percent reduction minor.
Usually, when a game is going down hill, it pulls crap like GW2 does. Over inflates its cash shop with things that, in all honesty, should be a part of the game (primarily glider skins come to mind, there should be craftable ones for each armor profession, order ones from the order vendors, profession ones, SOMETHING, to help lessen the blow of HoTs lack of non-gem customization content).
Celebrate your victory over Sabetha by buying her mini from the gemstore!
It doesn’t really matter if Mesmer damage is nerfed anyway because people don’t bring them for damage anyway. They have one of the lowest DPS in a raid but their utility is very overpowered. Hense why the utilities are being adjusted. They were overpowered in PvE and pretty much provide a significant dps boost to raids.
Their damage is already on the street, so why not push it into the gutter? Got it.
Chronomancer because I’m drawn to magical duelists and time mages. I also have an unfortunate history of picking underdog classes (Sorcerer in DAoC; pre-spirit buff Ritualist in GW1) so I may be something of a masochist.

It’s not just about this patch, either: it’s about the incremental shaving because of eSports: kind of a frog boiling in water scenario.

There’s zero reason not to nerf skills in PVP only, they’ve done it MANY times before. What’s the problem?
They basically said it’s due to a lack of human resources, but because PvE is such a stagnant environment (it’s not like Gorseval or Mai Trin swap out builds or anything), I don’t see why they can’t just lock certain traits and skills into effect.
It’s a slim shot, but hopefully they figure this out before they release more elite specs or it’s just going to get worse.
This. How about we split balance or do not balance the game around the mode where you can change your whole build, more specifically stats and sigils and runes, without spending any gold or time.
I can make a level 1 toon of another class, enter sPvP and enjoy it the same as my level 80’s with hundreds of gold in gear, so this mode while fair doesn’t feel right having balance adjusted around it. It’s just that if the level 1 toon get hit by nerfs I lose nothing, just make another level 1 from a top tier class and I am fine without any time invested at all.
And then you may need to spend more gold to retool your build for the new meta. Hmm… dons his tinfoil hat
how about the auto loot mastery is ONLY active in dungeons, fractals,WvW,raids and disabled in open world. problem solved
Autoloot is not the problem, the issue is that player activity is not needed to farm events/mobs
apparently it is. just disable autoloot mastery like i said in open world. and this problem will be resolved. or make it so if your pet kills things without you hitting it your self u wont get credit
Disabling autoloot in open world would just anger the majority of people who dont engage in this behavior. Changing game mechanics to where actual player involvement is necessary to gain loot and exp would be a better alternative to discouraging and preventing this kind of behavior. Allowing people to tag an enemy and sit out the rest of an event and still get full credit is ridiculous. Equally ridiculous is allowing people to gain loot and exp from their pets/minions while they do nothing at all.
This 100 percent. We already get enough kindergarten style group punishment from PvP balance.
It’s been difficult to get a straight answer from them, but the general response is they think it would be too much work.
Splitting skills for PvP and PvE seems to be fine for most of you. It may not be an issue if you only play PvE. It also may not be an issue if you only play PvP.
It is indeed an issue if you play PvE and PvP and both with multiple classes. The required skill knowledge increases drastically and ends up frustrating.
Also remember how confusing and unclear this will be for new players.
Don’t think in that limited mind please: just form your point of only playing one mode.
Please speak for yourself. You might end up frustrated and confused, but lets be real here. To think all new players are mentally deficient is a bad way to go about setting precedence for “balance”.
Balance should be done around the high end of every mode of play. Yes, this increases the “burden of knowledge” but that ultimately creates a healthier state as people have more information as a whole.
Thank you. I find this coddling mentality demeaning to all players.
Remember when they released the NPE? The entire excuse anet gave us was that they thought the game was too hard for new players, it was an extremely insulting statement to make but they made it none the less. It is clear that they still think their player base is too stupid to understand simple concepts.
Ah, yes, the Chinese GW2 client ported over to the Western version, which neutered the marketed freestyle sense of exploration NPE is one of the most insulting experiences I’ve been through in my 17 years of playing MMOs. I’m surprised it didn’t include level unlocks for jumping or using emotes.
Back on topic, would it be so hard to just leave skills and traits alone in PvE whenever eSports demands tribute? They could effectively lock them out of the system and make real changes for that format when necessary. Just add a (PvE) tag on these abilities so “new players” will get the message. I mean, it’s not like there’s any kind of warning you’ll lose food/utility effects for joining a match.
This should diminish the bitter taste from yesterday’s abrupt nerfs. Thanks for sharing – will have to try this later.

I came back a few days ago just to see this crap happen yet again. Think instead of a long break it might finally be time to quit for good. If someone ask what I remember from gw2 it would be the awful balance team anet has and their lack of reasoning for their patches.
I’m in the same boat. After that awful Alacrity nerf, I took a break. The spring update renewed my faith in Anet, so I returned and bought some gems out of thanks. And now this horsekitten happens. Never again.
The problem is you aren’t building the legendary the way Anet wants you to.
I’m confused why you would think we would post here when we know it’s not seen because it’s not on Reddit? There are threads with hundreds of posts without so much as a response. Why would we assume it would be seen now?
Want is not a question here. The possibility of actually being seen is. There have been thousands of ignored posts asking for the separation during balancing. If they were seen, there would have been a response by now.
That is why it won’t happen. That’s just it, “hundreds of posts without so much as a response.” Everyone with an opinion about what should be balanced, and all of ‘em different in some way… imo that makes them not worth paying any serious attention to… but I’m not ANet.
I’m suggesting instead of putting forth your own opinion into the nauseating cacophony, or complaining because your perspective on balance isn’t being paid attention to, instead ask what their opinion/vision/perspective is… try and get get an understanding of balance that doesn’t originate from your own bias.
For my own part I don’t predicate my enjoyment of a game on a concept of balance… I’m interested in what the Balance Team might have to say, but I’ve no real pony in that race. It’s just a suggestion to constructively address an issue that so many get kitten-hurt over every time something is adjusted.
Knee-jerk crying whenever there’s a balance change, or putting forth yet another suggestion for balance in the hundreds that already exist doesn’t seem to be working. Try something new if it means so much to y’all.

That makes sense then. This is the place to post an attempt to organize it. I feel somewhat indifferent to the balance issues too. The “separate balance” posts flood these forums after each pass, but there are simply too many issues blocking success. The only way to actually prove anything is with data withheld by Anet, like actual population in each part of the game, money spent from there…. stuff that won’t happen. I also suspect Anet is experiencing an issue with how reliable their feedback is if HoT was less successful than expected, and may be struggling with just who to listen too, and from where. I’ve basically stopped crafting anything but a Legendary because anything can, and has, been nerfed to valueless in one simple pass.
This is another issue relative to the lack of splits that I find many people overlook. PvE and WvW players can spend oodles of time and resources to get a particular combination of runes and stats, only for it to be rendered obsolete. Meanwhile, PvP players can click a few times and lose no progress whatsoever – oh, and they get gold refunds for amulets that are taken out of circulation.
I thought about putting together an Ascended Commander’s set for raiding on my Mesmer, but I know deep down all that effort can be marginalized on any given Tuesday – so what’s the point? I’m sure I’m not the only PvE player who feels like they’re being held hostage.
(edited by Makai.3429)
Yeah, Rev took a big PvE hit with that 75% increase in energy cost to Phase Travel. They didn’t even decrease the cool down. That is a pretty big nerf IMO.
Mesmer, Revenant, and Ranger should try to move to another game since this one isn’t working out.
I was originally going to convert all my gold to gems then gift swim boosters to my friends and guildies.
And this is the reason I hate patch day.
Seriously, please quit basing your PvE game around PvP content! This is nuts.

(Forgive my sarcasm, but it’s about time)
Hey so I logged in today and I noticed there’s two other entire game modes besides PvP. I think this means that we have to look at how balance changes are going to affect the entire game instead of trying to make some appeal to a maximum of 33% of us and an even smaller percentage of that on the basis of Esports.
Remember this when they market the next expansion for its PvE content.
PvE/PvP balance was split eventually in GW1. What’s their reasoning for not continuing that idea?
As far as we’re aware there isn’t one, which is a huge part of the problem.
At this point skill and trait splits is a pie in the sky idea. They won’t even explain why they refuse to do it.
Then start a thread/petition requesting the elusive Balance Team appear on an AMA.
If they do, you can get their perspective on how they see and approach balance, so you’re not approaching the idea solely from your own view, assumptions, and expectations.

It shouldn’t be the responsibility of the player base to make such a request seeing as how this has been a hot topic since launch. In Guild Wars 1 we received highly detailed reports of the reasons behind changes to skills and why they were split or merged. There’s no reason why today’s Anet can’t do the same.
Is it really going to affect PVE that hard… Seen worst tbh this is not one of them, but it is always sad that a pvp change will hurt pve. What I’m really curious about is do games actually have the means to separate pvp and pve stuff on a large scale unless it was done at launch like a advertised part of the game?
There’s a few effects that are already split such as the duration of Revealed and the way pets/summons/minions/illusions handle damage. Since these measures are already in place, refusing to split skills and traits is just plain laziness or neglect.
Agreed. The balancing of different game modes needs to stay within those modes. Balance fixes across the board in a game like this isn’t really the answer, unless they are trying to kill raids by limiting team composition to a tiny, ideal niche of professions.
The worst part about this is the fact they refuse to explain why they handle balancing this way.
Just get used to the profession being nerfed every Tuesday (and this is not hyperbole).
They even nerfed the garbage shouts from tempests in PvE as well. Who the hell thought Flash Freeze and Feel The Burn were overtuned in PvE?
Same goes for ranger smokescale. Like mesmer, rangers are the other lowest DPS class, and they nerf their only good DPS pet, it’s a joke.
Gotta love that focus on build diversity, eh?
Don’t worry, guys. They’ll buff us again when it’s time to sell another expansion.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: It makes no sense to monetize the game through PvE (gemstore purchases) and balance it on PvP.
This is also a big slap in the face to Mesmers who haven’t bought HoT since the nerf to PoM is clearly the result of Chronomancer.
(edited by Makai.3429)
Thanks again, eSports.
I’d like to introduce a friend to GW2, but I’d rather not shell out $50 for HoT. Also, because of the way the free/trial version works, I won’t have much interactivity with her (I’d like to help her get set up with some basic food, bags, weapons, etc.).
Does anyone know of a decent way to find an old, unused copy of the game? And if so, would this work to establish a new account? Thanks.
Dear Development and Balance teams,
I only main a Mesmer and mostly play World vs World, I feel the very heavy negative adjustments dealt our class have rendered the Mesmer class in the World vs World game type all but redundant.
I feel I will be spending significantly less time in game, as a result I won’t spend any more money in game.
For your consideration.
Johnny and Veles.
Same here. I’ve been tempted to log in this week to enjoy the new Shatterer and gliding in central Tyria, but can’t bring myself to see my main character gutted so severely.
I’ve put a lot of work into my Mesmer, and as of now, the following accomplishments feel like an absolute waste of time:
Full Ascended Armor/Weapons/Trinkets
150 AR
160 bag slots
500 Weaponsmithing and Tailoring
Full HoT and Core completion
The Flameseeker Prophecies (I knew deep down this was a bad idea since Mesmer has been Anet’s whipping boy from day one, but somehow thought their attitude changed thanks to Chronomancer – fool me once and such.)
Also plenty of real money spent on makeover kits, various skins and outfits, dyes, and other assorted items.
Unless the profession sees real positive changes I feel no reason to continue this game.
I also want to add that not seeing any buffs to Ventari or Jalis was another big disappointment.
A guildie had a black moa in GW1 and GW2 named Rocky Balmoa.
Every now and then when I’m bored I’ll run around with a blue moa, Alex, and a white moa named Ash; a bear named Mark, and a tiger named Tony. Here’s hoping we get a zebra pet one of these days!
Echoing the general consensus of the severe nerf to personal alacrity due to concerns in group content. Mesmer has a ton of issues in open world PvE and suffers from low DPS; the 66% alacrity helped smooth out the profession’s innate clunky behavior (illusions dying on enemy death especially).
For me, and many other Chronomancers, this nerf overshadowed everything else this patch had to offer. I’ve been playing GW2 since summer of 2012 and I’ve never felt so discouraged to log in.
This is the first change I’ve been actually really disappointed with, in the long line of mesmer changes since the game first came out. It just feels so badly thought out and as if the development team has never played with one in any sort of group content.
And there for a few months we had representation and consideration from the devs.
If you are reading this, Robert Gee, thank you so much for your efforts to make our profession desirable, even if it turned into this. From the June 23 patch to the first few months of HoT, your dedication to making Mesmer stand out was and still is very much appreciated.
You know he still works at Anet and would have been involved in this patch right?
Barring some strange scenario where 2 Anet employees beat him up in the corner while a third quickly programmed all the nerfs, he was probably the one who came up with them.
If that is the case then all hope is lost.

Another patch, another slew of nerfs to Mesmer. Same as it ever was. I’m so done with this game.
What’s a balance change that’s absolutely critical for one game mode that would be a disaster for another, with no alternatives that would accomplish something similar?
With the frequency and impact of balance changes to GW2 splitting skills between game types is a waste of time. It’s something that has a place when balance is frequent, precise, well informed, with sensitive differences in outcomes. It matters where you’ve tuned everything as carefully as you can and you just can’t achieve acceptable outcomes in two different modes without breaking the symmetry – and then you make subtle changes to cooldowns or ratios to maintain the feel across modes as best you can.
Guild Wars 2 is not in the same hemisphere balance-wise as a game where splitting skills makes the least bit of sense.
Seriously though, if you know a balance change that is critical for one gametype but toxic for another, with no alternatives, I’d love to hear it – otherwise this question is akin to ‘why don’t we drive with our feet on the steering wheel?’ Yeah sure it’s possible but what makes you think it’d be a good idea?
I honestly have no idea, pve & pvp were eventually split in GW1
This occurred because A.Net’s internal decision structure and politics were such a disaster that nothing could get done otherwise, and the result was an immediate downturn in the quality of balance in the game that it never came close to recovering from. This is not an example you should be pointing to of why you should be splitting skills in GW2.
A good example of skill splits is from League of Legends, where balancing is aggressive, constant, and targeted – they have a handful of split skills there because after relentless balancing they could not get a handful of champions to play nice in both their classic modes and dominion, and as a consequence introduced some numerically small but practically impactful splits in cooldowns and damage numbers.
When GW2 is balanced as well as a MOBA, come ask again about splitting skills.
How about the fact that players can spend ludicrous amounts of time acquiring certain skins or PvE-only milestones (agony resistance comes to mind) only to have it all fall apart thanks to eSports?
Whatever you do, always have a second profession/main on reserve in case your favorite gets nerfed.
Since eSports is all they care about they could just lock skills/traits in place for PvE to lessen the development burden.
It was fun while it lasted, ladies and gents. Does anyone know of another game that has a similar class? I love caster swordsmen, which is what drew me to Mesmer.
I feel like Rorschach at the end of Watchmen.
Please save us, Robert Gee.
Great idea, but incredibly overpriced. Also, you can use consumables directly from the slot itself, which works well when paired with the copper-fed kit.
I always thought talks about animal abuse and violence in games were kinda silly, and I kill deer without blinking an eye because I hate deer and how stupid they are touching my AOEs and then blaming me. But then I remember doing this heart, and I’m like “dude, that’s totally messed up!”
I don’t even try to kill the angry adult dolyak these days.
It’s not enough for me to contact PETA and I still lament the lack of a meat pizza in the game, but :O It’s an issue of consistency for me. Hearts are like mostly doing community service and cleaning up cow dung or some kitten or some goody goody crap, and then… this!
Although ironically, I hate being the goody goody hero too and I have the yakslapper title so I actually do like killing dolyaks, so…. I think it’s a matter of the game in general portraying your character as a goody two shoes. I wouldn’t mind more kittenish things if the story allowed for it more and portrayed it as such.
This wouldn’t be the first instance of Guild Wars heroes turning an abrupt 180 and becoming sociopaths. A certain quest in GW1: Nightfall involved helping a voracious drake fill his belly with live enemies: many of which could be Kournan soldiers.
As far as depressing renown hearts goes, nothing tops the dying quaggan island in Bloodtide Coast. It’s such a hollow feeling to know you can’t save them all thanks to the looping mechanics.
(edited by Makai.3429)
Here’s hoping he’ll survive Frostgorge.
Given we have no understanding of their timetable for expansion releases, we should fight Primordus next. Guild Wars players have been waiting nearly nine years to face him, and it’s doubtful the game will have an expansion to cover each elder dragon.
Just got him to 80 a few hours ago; can’t wait for Herald.
They have made some improvements, such as making newer attacks more visible, but sadly colorblind options are in the same realm as Bunny Ears, Ascended Valkyrie trinkets, Tribal Armor, and every other popular suggestion that Anet ignores.
Seriously, please quit basing your PvE game around PvP content! This is nuts.
