And once again Anet’s willful neglect of splitting skill and trait functionality has left us in the PvE dust. Many of us thought the change to mantra recharge was due to the fact that our recharge trait was removed. It’d be nice to think the recharge trait would return in recompense, but hey, same as it ever was.

I’ve been trying to work on a set of CM armor for the last week or so, but thin red circles on a green terrain is a nightmare for me. While my groups have won in the end, I hate having to be carried because of a disability. This issue is doubly so for most guild rushes, and at this point I’ve just given up on them.

I’m glad Anet has, over time, introduced new circle features (orange world boss circles and the slight animation to usual red circles), but it’s not enough for many of us.

SweetFX seems like my only choice at this point, but I’m anxious about using it due to EULAs and whatnot.

In the AMA stream they said at the end that Tomes will function exactly as they do now so long as you aren’t 80 yet. So they’ll bump your Rev to 80 if you so desire but won’t help post 80.

For skill scrolls, I think it’s time for me to research how to turn those into gold since there’s no reason now to spend them on unlocking skills for my alts.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for answering this. I wondered if key farming would be affected by this change.

The lack of PvP/PvE splitting frustrates me to no end. I hate having to rework my playstyle because of a gamemode I have no involvement in whatsoever. As such, last week I finally bit the bullet and retired my Mesmer, which I had mained since beta.

Secondly, I hate how much safety padding this game has: from the annoying squelching system to the NPE (yes, I know I should use my healing skill), and to the egregious amount of pop-ups that have to remind me that I haven’t finished my personal story/dailies.

HoT and Mesmer weapon

in Mesmer

Posted by: Makai.3429

Makai.3429

Shortbow would’ve been an interesting choice for a Mesmer weapon. They could have used it in melee like a crescent blade (with illusory edges covering the weapon’s front) and the no. 5 skill (phantasm) would act like a reverse phase retreat: teleport to an enemy and leave a phantasm in your place that uses a borrowed shortbow skill. A quick, painless way (not iLeap/Swap, which is still buggy) to switch from ranged to melee within one skill bar would fit the Mesmer nicely.

From a design standpoint, shields are just too boring and cumbersome for a profession that relies on finesse and style.

Hello, folks,
I took a long hiatus from the game a while back, and have been newly active for about a month now. With all these new items from Dry Top and Silverwastes piling up, I need to sort through my bank and toss out some old account bound items I’ve hoarded. Trouble is, though, I have no clue if they are worth holding on to. I’d appreciate any advice on this matter:

I have:
450 Mystical Cogs
1 Toy Ventari Frame
1 Toy Soldier Frame
1 Toy Golem Frame
51 Baubles
28 Continue Coins
25 Queen’s Entrance Tickets
75 Fortune Scraps
1 Marjory’s Journal
An assortment of ascended rings with stat combinations I don’t care for. Can I do anything with these, or should I sell them to a merchant?

Much appreciated.

Can we have a PvE-centric balancing update?

in Profession Balance

Posted by: Makai.3429

Makai.3429

So no one in this thread who is against skill splits gets miffed when their favorite profession gets nerfed due to balancing that has nothing to do with them? Why should my efficiency go down because of PvP, which I have no interest in?

In GW1 PvE if a skill wasn’t split, it usually wasn’t a gigantic deal because each profession combo had loads of useful builds (even if they weren’t exactly meta). In GW2, with its miniscule assortment of skills and playstyles, it’s a whole different story.

I swear there was an interview with an Anet dev back in 2010/2011 stating they learned their lessons from GW1 and wouldn’t punish PvE players. But the nyquil is kicking in, and thus I retire for the night.

Where are we headed?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Makai.3429

Regardless of what happens (or doesn’t happen), methinks the only guarantee is repeatedly broken Mesmer skills from here on out.

Predictions:

Players will only be able to access one dungeon path per Jupiter passing the seventh house, though they will receive a “bonus” of 20s per completion. As a special consideration for this change, however, players will be able to swap between crafting professions at no cost.

Ascended fractal drop rates will be increased by about 0.000001%.

All champions in open world will be turned into elites.

Adding to the sense of “progression”, weapon skills must be earned by completing certain tasks or feats. For example, earning Necro Axe #3 will require finishing Victory or Death; Warrior Mace #5 will require mapping EB; etc. Players can opt out of this system by spending gold and skill points at a rate of 10g and 50 skill points per skill.

Karma gains from EOTM will be completely annihilated.

I like the new skins but will get ZERO because there is no longer any way to make in-game gold to buy them and I REFUSE to spend one more cent on the gem shop.

I’m sure all the people who are willing to spend countless hours farming keys (WHICH IS OK IN ANET’S BOOK BUT NOT CHAMPS OR EVENTS OR DUNGEONS OH NO) will be super rich. Good on ya.

Key farming is still a big gamble wherein the player ends up risking time that could be better spent in other venues. Dungeon rewards (and, well, every reward structure in the game barring EOTM) may have dwindled, but at least they are constant.

Case in point: I’ve gone on about 20 key runs over the last few weeks and have received three scraps, one ticket, and a whole bunch of rubbish I’ll never use. In the 15-20 minutes I spent on getting repair canisters and killstreak boosters, I could’ve made a fair amount running SE. I still do it regularly, however, as its one of few GW2 pursuits that isn’t time-gated or on a spreadsheet and doesn’t require waiting for others.

Anyhow, everyone should support key farmers as they keep skin prices low. Row, row fight the powah and such.

Invariably it’s a pretty bad time for new players and the current direction Anet is going will leave a lot of newcomers frustrated for sure. MMOs generally get easier/more accessible over time, so what’s the deal? Is this some scheme to draw out playtime?

1) The new trait system with its issues as mentioned throughout the thread. I can’t imagine how anyone is supposed to enjoy leveling a Mesmer or Engineer. WvW was enjoyable from lvl 30 or so, but now seems like a waste of time unless you are 80.
2) Huge inflation on gold to gems compared to release and subsequent nerfing of farming and dungeon runs.
3) Massive losses in the ability to gain karma compared to release.
4) No more unidentified dye drops, which like the previous trait progression, added excitement early on.
5) The new events system, which not only makes the whole experience less organic, but also ruins peoples’ experiences based on their timezone.

So what you’re saying is, you weren’t affected by this in the slightest? You have absolutely no idea how annoying it is to get hit with a bug that breaks your game, that the devs have been incompetent at fixing?

Why are you even in this thread? Is the thing you like doing outside of this game… giving your opinion where it isn’t needed or wanted?

I’ve lost phone service for at least a day.
I’ve lost internet access for several days.
I’ve lost power for the best part of a night.
I have lost money to a composer who can’t do a competent job of shipping his CDs.

I lost a grandparent to the incompetence of his doctors. Call that a bug in their basic common sense, if you will.

Why am I here? Because I seem to be one of the few here with the better grasp of my priorities, and the good sense to put such a “game-breaker” pretty low on my list.

Why resort to such a poor form of argumentation? Just because a situation is worse than another doesn’t give the latter a positive value. I’ve had a migraine for the last week and my next door neighbor broke her leg a few days ago. Did that cause my migraines to go away?

Hey folks,

To cut a long story short, I recently returned to GW2 after a seven month hiatus. I’ve been inspired to return because a GW1 friend is finally going to begin playing next week. Obviously, she won’t be able to experience the crazy karma gains, CoF farming, tighter gold to gems ratio, and trait system we enjoyed back in the day, so I’m at a loss on how to advise her as she progresses along. To put it in perspective, she’s more of a PvEr, but did enjoy RA, so she might mess with PvP here and there. Any words of wisdom I could send her way?

Looks like I’ve caught the entire salvo of this awful bug:

Two dailies are already completed right after the server reset time. After completing three others, I get the corner reward chest, but no laurels.

Dungeon and PvE event chests (both “world” and bonus) are not properly resetting for me after the usual daily/server reset time.

I just did CoF path 1 26 hours or so since the last run and I received the secondary completion bonus and no chests.

I did some guild missions last night and only received the rewards for half of them – mind you this was after a seven month hiatus, so there was no way I had already completed them earlier in the week.

Also, my ascended crafting timer instantly went to 23:58 or so right after the daily reset.

"you don't need ascended to play the game"

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Makai.3429

Makai.3429

I was thinking a bit more about Ascended Crap, and I think I pinned down my real objection.

I don’t trust the balance team enough to invest heavily in any build.

For my Elementalist, not only have the Stat Types that I’d want changed several times, but whole weapon sets have risen to and fallen from viability in different areas of play. Right now, my dungeon teams seem to appreciate my S/D offensive buffing, but who knows if that will still work next patch? If I pay out for an Ascended Scepter, am I going to be regretting that it wasn’t a Staff or a second Dagger? Or that I chose Berserker’s stats, when they get around to making Elementalist Condition Damage worthwhile and want Rampagers or whatever?

A year into the game, the class structure landscape is still FAR too volatile for this kind of time investment. At least, in my personal favorite classes.

This x100.

The situation gets even worse when you consider how weapons are tied to skills. If a favored GW1 skill was nerfed or modified in a way that would completely change your build, you ended up losing a skill point and maybe some platinum. Now we run the risk of losing lots of money, effort, and gold. Remember all the complaint posts from Dreamer Rangers after Shortbow was nerfed? It’s kind of funny considering every skill nerf is because of PvP: a format that won’t even employ Ascended gear.

Also remember that professions will have access to more weapons before the year’s end. How much do you want to bet these new skills will be more powerful as a means to entice players to stick around?

Those calling GW2 shallow.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Makai.3429

Since depth is a function of having meaningful choices in build design, the more viable options that exist, the deeper the system. Take Necromancer.

In GW2, Necromancers can be: powermancers; conditionmancers; hybrid condition/spike; or survival life syphoners. Minion masters are going to choose one of the above, as are support necros. Why? Weapon choices. Scepter plus dagger is a condition combination. Dagger or ax plus focus is a power combo. Staff is kind of in-between, with the auto attack being power-based but marks doing primarily condition damage. Death shroud is more of a power-based option because of Life Blast.

I agree with you except this. In GW2 (at least PvE), all that matters is dodging and raw damage. With damage types and class roles out the window, the only real “choice” when it comes to making characters is whether you want green clouds or purple butterflies to follow your attacks.

On the topic of AI: It’s basically nonexistent. As a PG RPG fanatic for the last 20 years or so, I find it so disheartening that “dodge after windup” is the best Anet can do.

Fractals needs a Revamp

in Fractals, Dungeons & Raids

Posted by: Makai.3429

Makai.3429

Fractal Weapons
Since fractal weapons require two RNG rolls, they cause some of the most frustrating experiences for skilled fractal runners. Someone who is completely familiar with and skilled enough to do 48+ is not rewarded in this aspect much more than someone who only runs 20.

There should be a way for higher level players to have some sort of reward instead of having to deal with the nightmare that is RNG.

Good thing I wrote up a recipe 8 months ago on this very issue.

In short, it would require:

  • 2k fractal relics
  • 20 pristine fractal relics
  • 5 Cores of Mist Essence
  • Some sort of T6 or T7 crafting material

As another suggestion on that thread said, perhaps salvaging an existing fractal weapon would also give you one of the parts needed.

However, leave the current RNG system in addition to this new progression system, as it is a nice bit of excitement if you manage to appease the RNG Gods and get the weapon you were working towards.

Ascended Gear Drops
These need expansion. Fractals is the only content where there is an active gear check on whether or no you have ascended items.

  • 10-24: Ascended Rings
  • 26-40: Infused Rings
  • 30-44: Ascended Amulets
  • 46-60: Infused Amulets
  • 50-64: Ascended Accessories
  • 66-80: Infused Accessories

Ascended Gear Salvaging
Because this will cause a backup of useless Ascended gear for some people, make ascended items salvageable.

  • Item counts as an exotic for ecto calculation
  • Guaranteed drop of Vial of Mists Essence
  • With the new 500 crafting coming, maybe the new materials as well?

Ascended Backpieces available outside of Fractals
All current backpiece recipes require one Vial of Mist Essence. With the addition of ascended salvaging, all one would have to do is salvage another ascended item to receive the needed Vial of Mist Essence to complete their back item, totally eliminating the need for any runs of fractals whatsoever.

Additional stat allocations wouldn’t hurt either.

Bug Fixing
And Bug Fixing. Yup. Also length management. Because dredge is loooong.

What would everyone else think about some of these changes? What would you guys do differently?

Masterfully crafted idea. Here is a bump for you.

People who are compelled to play even when they don’t want to play, or who farm tirelessly for an item but don’t find farming fun, or who grind for a reward and hate grinding, are mistaken to blame the game’s design. You all need to take a hard look in the mirror and take ownership of your own behavior.

Stop acting like a victim. The game is giving you a way to earn a reward, which is completely optional and of no consequence in your ability to play the game to its fullest. Your choices and your behaviors are what’s making you dissatisfied.

“Completely optional” is a weak defense in a game that has horrible drops and a crippling (and ludicrous) diminishing return system. We should all be glad we’ll be getting “bonus gold” with next week’s dungeon patch, right? I’ve played a lot of MMOs over the last 16 years or so and GW2 has the most punishing reward system I’ve ever seen.

It’s a shame Anet can’t allow us any degree of control over our visualization, or I would gladly remove the daily/monthly/personal story/living story panes from the UI. Methinks a lot of players would be less inclined to finish the kitten things if they weren’t displayed like a 2002 popup advert. Three cheers for coddling!

Really most people should just resign themselves from the idea of having the best looking stuff the game will have to offer. It will more often than not be locked behind RNG.

The craftsmanship in these weapons, the Dragonbash weapons and the Scelerite (even though a lot of people didn’t like them, the Geiger esque textures were really well done) surpasses just about every other item available through game-play, sans a few of the legendaries.

And only a subset of players, or a subset of a subset, will ever have access to them. What makes it even worse is the message that will be sent by electing Evon to the council. Many of the designers will realize it would be a victory leveraged by the Fractal or just wanting to vote for the “bad-guy”, but dollars to donuts, the monetization team will say that the majority player base is in love with the RNG chests and wanted to access more of them. This is another strategy straight from the Nexon / Maple Story play book.

Fortunately, none of this really takes away from the game. The skins are so rare that you only see them occasionally out in the world. That removes any real skin-vy issues and feeling left out because everyone else has something you don’t and can never get. The skins don’t confer any statistical advantage or status. They aren’t a mark of some specific accomplishment. They are in almost all cases, pixel crack that people want because its the new thing or fits the character theme.

Save yourselves the frustration, and just never expect to have them. That way you wont end up disappointed and if you somehow get one, it will be that much more exciting. Also, never ever ever think you will somehow have a better chance this time than you did last time based on the words used in the marketing material. Read it, pick out the bit that is there to intentionally make you think you have a fair shot and then laugh about how they tried to catch you with it and move on to the bullet points about new items you can buy directly or new activities to participate in. You’ll be much better off for it.

Very well said. It’s a shame this can’t be stickied.

Another mechanic I have trouble coping with is the complete nullification of damage types. Shouldn’t my vapor blade deal more damage to lava elementals? Shouldn’t an oakheart take massive damage from a flamethrower? And why wouldn’t an earth elemental have better shielding against a sword than a hammer? Anet messed up royally in GW1 by having “typeless” damage dominate the game for a vast majority of its life and it seems they just threw the baby out with the bathwater.

@Galen Grey

Fine, Ill bite.

Dynamic “Events”. SWG. Galactic Civil War, for years, players, and players only, controlled who owned what, access to cities, planetary control, what NPCs spawned where.. and it never reset. Players had to change things, and they stayed changed till other players undid it. Right until the end. And each server was different. Mine was actually won by the Empire.. one of the few. SWG was also dynamic in that originally, nearly all pvp was centered upon Player created fortresses. You popped a base in rebel territory, and it was there until they took it from you. I base I placed lasted 2 years. (pre NGE)

Everquest 2. World Events. Players permantly changed the game. We did events to add a playble race, add griffen stations, add wizard portals, add guild halls, add travel to other continents, and the world changed permanently. Test Server did not have Froglok race for many years, they did not have the population to do the event to unlock the race.

Dynamic, to me, is not a repeatable kill ten rats event that resets on a timer, sorry.

Freedom of Choice. Again, SWG pre NGE. No professions, only skills. Most players were combinations of 3 or more “professions”. There was no trinity either. No combat roles. You could spec in so many different ways. Crafting..totally custom. You set the specs on what you produced. Or, the customer did. There were no “questlines” or paths, you decided. Your “personal” story was what YOU chose to do.

Meaningful exploration? Go to point A and get a checkbox ticked? Meaningful exploration is up to the explorer. There are easter eggs in every game, map uncovering, rewards. I will grant that ANET did do the checkoff style with chest rewards. And again, going back to SWG.. in 2003 they had exploration that was not a point marked on a map. You found them by accident, and they led to titles. (later they did appease the wowcrowd by adding markers for them)

Weapons? In SWG the best weapons possible were made by players. Period. Some comps were rare drops, but if you wanted the best, you NEVER had to enter any dungeon. In fact, there were very few of those.

Vanguard.. choice. I can craft them, I can instance them. Same with EQ2, my chars are full fabled with either crafted, or token armor I earned soloing.

Living story.. again, Everquests, SWG. Pretty living when players band together, as a server, to permanently change that server.

Minigames. pretty common. Most holidays are full of them. In Vanguard, the Diplomacy minigame is a full fledge profession of its own, you level in it, and you can leverage buffs that effect entire towns and persist beyond them.

Temp content every 2 weeks. Yup.. thats new. yet to be seen how it will play out.

Same with your commentary re combat. I don’t see what you see here, and I think it is player perception. I do not see the flexibility here to do what you listed. Ill give you that one, but I dont buy it as new.. since I played PRE NGE swg with no classes or “roles” at all.

But this wall of text means nothing. Really. You like GW2 or you don’t. I just get a bit tired of the claims of “no game ever before”. That is just flat out wrong and is claimed far too much, Not by ANET, but by fans.

Love the game. Don’t put it on an altar and worship it.

Adding to this: Ultima Online had ongoing GM-run story arcs (basically Living Story ‘99) that employed real consequences. One of the best instances was when Yew (a heavily forested town and important to the lore at large) was attacked by a massive influx of diseased creatures and other nefarious things. On some servers, the player base managed to save Yew from its destruction, while others weren’t so lucky: to this day, 10-13 years later, some Yew “instances” are poisoned swamps teeming with difficult encounters. Instead of RNG boxes and pressing [F], the thrill of the content came from shaping the world and having a real impact on the game and the overarching storyline. If GW2 could integrate something like this into its Living Story system, we old timers would have a surefire winner. Unfortunately, though, consequences haven’t been in PC RPGs for a very long time.

Then again, UO was a game made for roleplayers whereas modern MMOs are about looking cool, following yellow arrows, and filling bars, so there’s a different (practically non-existent) audience for real dynamic play.

A very simple fix is to add the “ready” prompt from Fractals to the end of a normal dungeon path.

Various quality of life features that have been around since bronze age MMOs and are oddly absent in 2012/2013:

1) No ability to deposit all/withdraw all from the bank.
2) No first person view.
2.1) Difficult camera angles, which make taking screenshots frustrating.
3) No way to see inactivity in the guild roster.
4) No way to tell which crafting levels a character is at if those disciplines are inactive.
5) No list of completed story mode dungeons or fractal levels per character.
6) No LFG tool.
7) No reasonable spam/squelching system. Why should I be locked out of sharing potions with my friends in dungeon runs?
8) No true “invisible mode” or privacy – everyone knows exactly where you are at all times.
9) No way to customize your UI or rearrange skills to your liking.

Not directly related to a game mechanic, but I find the lack of quality skill and trait update notes very disheartening. In GW1, every buff or nerf had a detailed report from the developers stating their reasoning.

Using a low level character at Labyrinthine Cliffs is actually a great way to save money on waypoint fees.

I feel you, OP – sad as this is, the whole update has been ruined for me. In all fairness, we weren’t promised a rapier, but to see another set of overproduced skins is disheartening to say the least.

So what Sword options do we have? The closest one I’ve found is a ceremonial sabre, which kind of gives the class a “Blue Mage” vibe. Whisperblade would be a good contender if the base model wasn’t so boring.

On the bright side, the new pistol is absolutely gorgeous and well-suited for mesmer. It’s elegant and sleek, just like the mesmer class. Despite not regularly using pistol, I intend to pick one of these up before the event ends.

If you can, try to pick up two as there’s always the possibility we might get MH Pistol.

I thought I learned my lesson with the Secret of Southsun boxes, but no, I had to be impulsive – 50g converted to gems netted 10 scraps. Shame on me, Anet.

I have to confess, I saw the words “Null Field” under the word “Mesmer” and went into full panic mode…

“OH GOD, THEY’VE NERFED NULL FIELD TOO – IS NOTHING SACRED?!”

Took me a full few seconds to release this was actually… a buff?! I didn’t know how to feel.

Admittedly the rest of the classes got a tonne of changes – mostly buffs – but still, not being actively directly nerfed felt really good.

It’s the difference between getting a pay cut, and getting a pay rise that’s too small to cover inflation, but psychologically it’s a huge improvement.

Funny how scrolling through Mesmer notes can be mind wracking.
