I think for hotjoin ppl are generally only packing offensive builds. Mesmer and theif can inherently pick up quite a lot of damage while still having a ton of tricks, this and the fact that the builds etc. are a lot more obv means that they are being put in quite a good light atm.

I suspect for premade PvP and once the game starts to get a little more explored other classes will begin to shine or at least join the limelight. For examples of this see development of the SC2 meta game.

Off the top of my head I can think of both a necro and a guardian who made far more of an impression on me than any mesmer or theif just because of howkittenhard they were to kill while pumping stupid quantities of damage. Despite this though I’ve not seen anyone else running their builds or coming close to how vicious they were.

Finally, any player can resurrect any other player. It’s common for a player to die in a group battle, and be rezzed relatively quickly.

Error, to many resurectors. lol

Combo Fields and Combo Finishers: How do they work?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Malakree.5912

Malakree.5912

http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Combo

Full list of how each combo field/finisher interacts.

Basically when any skill listed as a “combo finisher”, ie. the mesmer magic bullet is a combo finisher: projectile, passes through an area which is currently under the effect of a skill which is listed as a “combo field”, so the mesmer skill feedback is combo field: ethereal, that attack will then have an additional effect based on the type of finisher and the type of field. In the example case it would be that it applies a stack of confusion.

EDIT: Quote: Finishers can only interact with one initiator at a time.

Whenever a combo is created, a notification will show on the player’s screen, indicating the effect that was generated by the combo.

It’s a great idea.

The only tricky aspect of it is that your relative power when you downlevel is the same as your relative power at the higher level — that is, if you are a level 50 and haven’t updated all of your gear and have some out of date pieces, when you downlevel you will be worse in many respects stat-wise to a character on that level (because their gear won’t be as out of date as yours). Something to keep in mind when downleveling.

This can be largely offset by the fact you have a ton of extra traits. Remember that trait lines grant free stats for each point put in and you will have things which just randomly up bits of your damage or survivabilty. Fex the mesmer trait which says “your phantasms do 15% more damage” should basically offset the gear deficit.

Wait, is it when you channel the mantra or when you trigger it?

Personally I’m running 10/15/0/25/20 for a phantasm stack build, also nice with the regen from phantasms. Dunno….just never really liked the idea of mantras, that 3-4second original cast time feels like an age in combat. Also your build isn’t really a defensive build, as I said its offensive with defensive utility which isn’t what the OP was after.

Against most ppl worse than me I trash them quickly. In an even skill battle even against a thief running a full burst build (and my mesmer being almost full damage) it still took a good 15 seconds to play out completely.

Same as wow, 90% of players lost to me in the first min, 8% of them died in 5mins, the really good ones we could be there for hours.

I play mesmer and the current build I have allows me to wreck almost everyone 1v1 and even take up to a 1v3 if the opponents don’t know how to play it out properly.

That said I met a guardian who I had so many issues with, only time I killed him he had none of his stuff up and was at 25% hp….was still close.

I think player skill and being in sync with your profession is more important than what profession. I’ve met more awful mesmers than anything other than theives.

Yeah I know of that but I’m just not sure how viable a mantra build is. In order to get the best use of it you need to go 30 into the power tree which kinda kittens you elsewhere. Compared to say the ele who gets a heal on their number 3 staff in water attunement your much stronger as a boon/debuff bot that as a heal orientated character.

That’s not to say you CAN’T pick up some healing but generally it would be more the kind of thing you would run as defensive utility in an offensive build. Feedback+null field+phantasmal disenchanter/defender would as a general rule all be stronger in a defensive build.

Oh I’m not belittling your opinion here btw, mesmer is the proff I play so I just went into build discussion mode :P

EDIT: BTW anet, I love the fact it replaces swear words with “kittens” makes me laugh every time.

EDIT2: Second thought the daze mantra would fit quite nicely into a defensive orientated build, It’s just a shame the charge time is sokittenlong since it really cripples any potential mantra use.

Personally I love the idea of it. One of the big issues with wow (as the easiest example) was that after you got above the level of a content area that area became redundent. As a level 80 I’ve just been back and completed queensdale, sure it wasn’t hard but it wasn’t me walking around 1hitting everything.

It also means that every dungeon at all levels is still open to me, just because I missed the lvl 40 manor dungeon doesn’t mean that at 80 I cant now go do it and get the same level of enjoyment that I would have at 40. In fact most of the dungeons I go to have a mix of levels…Imagine that in wrath you could go back and do original naxx without it being trivialized, the idea of it sends shivers down my spine.

With regards to the 3 that I missed, if someone could say whether or not you can build a defensive utility spec as them or if it’s not possible.. Could you fex build a ranger build which stacks protection and other such boons on allies making them harder to kill rather than “stopping them from dieing” if that makes sense. Much like the mesmer build I mentioned.

Yes, unlike in other mmos I can play this when I want due to not having subs. Also the SPvP is really strong in terms of how its balanced and plays out. Even if I take a 2month break I know I will come back to play some more just because I can. Should I ever become bored of my proff I can reroll an entirely new one, jump into SPvP and be on a equal footing as someone who started during BW1 (excluding the skill difference ofc).

everything I have heard and seen warriors are probably the BEST proffession in the game due to the sheer variety of things they can do.

A well built mesmer runs one of about 3 things.

A well built warrior does one of like 8 things.

The key to remember though is that skill is the most important factor. I met one guardian who wrecked my face unless I caught him with his pants down. I’ve met 3/4 who annoyed me. I’ve met about 50 that were complete none issues. This was entirely down to skill, build and knowledge of the game and had nothing to do with guardians being “crap” or “op”.

The first thing which has been mentioned several times is that there is no “holy paladin” type healer in this game.

That said you CAN play a defensive support character. I’ll try and list the options that I know of and how they play out but take everything I say with a pinch of salt as I haven’t played every class etc.

1) Guardians. Whether or not they are the best defensive support I know they can make a bloody strong one. They are probably the easiest since they specialize in buffing both themselves and those around them.

2) Elementalist. These are sort of odd. The ele works by having 4 elemental attunements which you can switch between at will. Of these the water attunement packs a lot of defensive utility from GTAOE heal to other support esque mechanics, I believe you can spec into this area in order to get them really up on it but that is not to say you can’t still bring the noise the moment you go fire/air.

3) Warrrior. I have heard of a warrior spec revolving around mass shouts that is really tanky and brings a lot of healing as well as other utility. The single truth of this game is that the warrior really can do anything if you build them right, it’s why they are probably the no1 proff atm.

4) Engineer. Don’t know the specifics but I know they CAN build defensive utility. Look to other players than me for anything more than that.

5) Mesmer. This one isn’t per say a defensive proff but there are so really cool thins you can do with the chaos tree+staff. You dont have heals but you do a crap ton of random boons that last for ages while at the same time applying some quite crippling debuffs. Weakness+protection = no damage.

6) Theif, Necro, Ranger. They might have a spec to do this but I don’t know of it and have heard nothing about such a spec.

Malakree.5912

Whell first of All Thank you ! For all the anwsers and inspiring.

I waited this game since it was announced. I seriously loved Gw1. But might been a bit dissapointed in this. Mostly becosue of body blocking (missing) and i found combat a bit to simple.
But i must also add, it can be quite tactical somethimes. There are also builds here trough a LOT less, then in gw1, but its still fun, exspecially pvp. So i AM looking forward to play the game. I just cant seriously decide.

I read a lot of threads on classes to lately. Witch class has witch problems.
And you are right. I should seriously not bother who plays what.
I would propably still play Nekro if i find a decent “nuker” weapon.

All say to use staff, and i did for a long time, but those “marks on the floor” dont really give me the tipical “caster” feeling. Scepter is more like a wand in the necros hand.
Dagger and Axe are melee and mid range. The utility skills and traits are really good, and “boondancer” build totally destroys in pvp. But still i cant enjoy it fully. Trough Nekromance is the tipical my personality. (maybe later when more weapons come out)

As for Ele. I guess i give it a shot then. If anyone got some feedback on all this go on i gladly listen to it. I am actually quite happy that the community is this brilliant.

As to the necro I mentioned how was obliterating me, I believe he was using this build.

My advice would be this.

1) Try all the classes, If you want a taster of all the ways you can build a class then do some SPvP. It can a bit of jumping in the deepend but it will let you see all the trait potentials and different ways you can build something.

2) Recognize that there are multiple ways to each class, some are more streamlined than others. I know warrior has about 5/6 powerful builds which work. Mesmer I feel has 2 primary trait builds that work.

3) Look at how Anet feel each class should work. If they say that the mesmer is an illusion based class and that doesn’t really appeal to you then odds are you won’t like mesmer. As an example the whole theme behind the engineer/thief just don’t appeal to me. I will probably try them out at some point but it will be out of curiosity rather than the “need” to play it I had with my mesmer.

4) Look at player builds and guides while also looking at the people who seem to be doing really well. No matter how good you are at doing trait lines the 400,000+ other people are going try and do stuff which never even occurred to you. The other day I faced a necromancer who had more upfront damage than most of the theives AND was a pain to kill. My guildmate who had been lamenting how bad necro was switched to this build and now loves his necro more than anything.

5) Play for fun. This may seem like an obv statement but really it can’t be overstated. I played feral druid (sorry for the wow reference) for over 5years. There were many points at which the spec was just awful but I loved it, loved how it worked loved everything about it. My experience and knowledge of the class also meant I could MAKE it work when it was bad. Play something enough, no matter how bad and you will win just from pure skill and surprise factor. Frost mage > feral, but there are no feral’s so 99% of Fmages couldn’t play the match out properly and lost hard.

I’ve currently played around 10 hours of wvw and have 44/50. Of all the achievements I find it to be by far the most expensive AND the most difficult. I hate feeling like I’m forced into wvw, to get thekittenmonthly chest. I wouldn’t mind if it was PvP but more than anything it feels like I’m just throwing down random aoes while measure my frame rate in FPM. I’m paying around 2s a death and getting no where near loot to make it worth it, its boring me out of my skull making me frustrated and angry.

Worst of all it feels like 90% of the time I’m either wandering round an empty map or attacking a bloody door, even when the door breaks the defenders jump off the walls and I have spent 15mins doing kitten all watching my character auto attack while getting literally 0 kills for it.

I really want the monthly chest but the past day of trying for this has instilled nothing more than horrific memories of wintergrasp in my mind and a desperately longing that I could get this achieve through real PvP.

Is there really no other way? No bug I can abuse to not have to go to WvW while getting this achieve?

Benefits of playing PvP and WvW?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Malakree.5912

Malakree.5912

WvWvW is a potential alternative to levelling up if you enjoy hitting doors and having sub 5fps. It grants XP and level based loot while also providing a variety of gathering nodes, as there are also events and neutral mobs (i think more than 15types) it is possible to get the entire of your monthly and daily quests without ever going to PvE. On the rare occasion you actually get awarded a player kill you get a token for it which you can spend on higher level gear such as weapons or armor.

SPvP is for people that enjoy skill based PvP where everyone has a level playing field and you can jump right in without 2+weeks of grinding. It provides no benefits to anything outside of SPvP, other than bragging rights, while not taking anything from outside. The points you earn in this are for purchasing different looking gear, it provides no stat bonuses but does look amazing.

One of the few people who gave me problems was an engineer, the damage he was pumping rivalled that of a theif but he had a ton more survivability. He was getting about 8k damage out of his hip shot in 4 hits and the other abilities also resulted in a ton of burst. Maybe he was just running a counter build to my mesmer but I found the three people I’ve had problems with to be him, a theif and a guardian.

Mesmers - How do they work?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Malakree.5912

Malakree.5912

Couple of things.

1) Illusions are seperated into 2 categories, phantasms and clones. Imo a phantasm build is the only viable mesmer build atm, I’ve seen a few others but nothing comes close to just how powerful a good phantasm build is.

2)Clones largely are “useless” but having them out buffs the mesmer quite significantly. Firstly they let you access your shatter abilities, you dont WANT to shatter but if kitten and fan connect then you can always use your 4th shatter for 3 seconds of direct damage immunity. Also one should not forget, clones can crit, this is very important as it applies a stack of bleed. Lastly basically every build of mesmer should be running either 3% damage with each clone, 3% damage reduction or increased movement speed, thus having them out is really useful for that.

3) Always spec for deceptive evasion (20points dueling) that clone on dodge is so strong its unreal, combine with decoy it can make you really hard to track even if they do know which one is real straight away. Its power really cant be overestimated.

4) Learn the ethereal combo fields. These and light are the two that you can drop, learn which skills trigger them, it will give you a huge edge. Nothing is better than dropping a feedback on a ranger, having him shoot himself, having your phantasms all pump damage into him and when the feedback he’s still got ~10 bleeds and 5-10 stacks of confusion, that’s a free win right there.

5) A phantasm build can be run both condition damage or power, both require a lot of precision though. Power/precision relies on raw straight up burst from the phantasms, you spec heavily into illusion damage. A condition damage build still requires precision, this is because when your illusions crit (even your 1 damage clones) they apply a bleed stack.

6) Use a staff. Even if you think it will be bad with your build use it. The combo of chaos storm+chaos armor gives you basically another free escape, if they try and sit on you through it they get a mass of debuffs and you get a ton of free buffs, especially if you go 15 into chaos it makes you basically unkillable. That and the staff illusions/all its abilities are just so great. Switching my greatsword for a staff made my build so much stronger.

7) On any power/precision build the flame blast on crit is such a good rune it can’t be overstated. Try it and love it.

I tried leveling cooking but the gold/mat input was just so high compared to my artificing that I dropped it in favour of another easy profession. I would say no since you require mats from all the areas at all levels, in artificing for example I need 1 teir of wood/ore, and that same teir of the special items (dust, totem, venom etc.). For cooking you need all the crafting mats from the 2/3 areas at your level as well as mats from the teirs below.

On top of that you make a whole bunch of materials which you need, are only good for crafting but don’t go in the collectibles window, this meant that about 60% of my bank was taken up with cooking mats that I couldn’t use because I didn’t have the 1/2 specific things which made something with them as they were from the norn area, or the char area etc.

Cooking to me is something you level with an alt OR you do from max level when you have already spent 60-70 levels collecting a bank full of random cooking mats.

Mesmers - How do they work?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Malakree.5912

Malakree.5912

Generally I find that a single volley from my duelist chops between 1/3rd and half of someone’s hp depending on how tanky they are. The reason I run with signit of illusions is to stop them just bursting down the phantasms and when you combine it with the inspiration tree, 20% more hp, retaliation (on a power build) then add in the faster illusion summoning from 5points in illusions the phantasms actually become quite hard to deal with. If you focus them it pretty much lets the mesmer do whatever they want since you spend more time killing the phantasms than you do anything else. I’d say to take down both of mine repeatedly means that I will always have 2 dodges and at least 75% of my defensive skills up when you try and switch to me. Combine in the bleeds from illusion crits, not just phantasms, and most ppl have to deal with constantly having 6-15 bleeds on them.

I’d say unless someone is running a full tank build you normally can’t soak the damage that a power/precision phantasm mesmer outputs enough to be able to kill the phantasms. If you are running a full tank build you just can’t kill them.

Oh some mesmer tips and tricks.
1) Dealing with invisibility: Your illusions will only ever focus the target they were originally spawned on, if you get a duelist on someone like a rogue and they go invisible the moment they reappear the duelist will unload a new volley into them thus telling you where they are.

2) This carries over to dealing with other mesmers, especially in the downed state. Drop a duelist on the mesmer as he goes down then when he teleports and summons a clone you merely wait to see which one your duelist goes for, this can save an incredible amount of time.

3) Burst thieves, these are the one thing you WILL have problems dealing with. It took me 3/4 attempts at them before I worked out how to deal with them properly and if you are sub90% hp your chances drop drastically. Basically you get the duelist out on them then do everything in your power to stay alive, when they go invisible make damage sure that you do the same or drop your blurred fury just as they would normally be opening. It’s all about limiting the number of bursts from stealth they get. The one who really could kill me could soak at most 1 round from the duelist, the second +any secondary damage would down him meaning you really just blow stuff as fast as you can to live.

Im almost level 80 in PvP and have done a bit (up to ~R8) of Spvp. In both areas I run a phantasm build which I would say is squishy but in a deceptive sort of way. The big thing about the build I’m running (10/20/0/25/5 +10) is that most of the damage comes from your phantasms. You run large amounts of power and precision with no defences so if left alone you personally can also pump a lot of damage you just don’t need to. This means that in a 1v1 situation as long as you get your 2 phantasms out I find I don’t need to actually do damage, my illusions kill them for me. This is in both areas.

I’ve tried a few condition orientated builds but find them to be weak, essentially you run exactly my build but relying on the bleeds the illusions stack instead of their raw damage.

For PvE I run sword/pistol + greatsword, where as in PvP I use sword/pistol + staff. This combination when used with utilities such as decoy/feedback makes you actually really hard to kill despite your low defences. The one person I ever had problems with was a guardian who charged in and did his stupid spin thing not caring if I was invisible or not, I basically had to be on sword using blurred fury at that point to survive. Although in hind sight I should have used the 4th shatter.

Once you get the hang of a phantasm build mesmer you find that while you really lack the aoe damage and are quite susceptible to pure raw burst the fact you can focus so much on surviving, due to your phantasms being the damage, you really can deal with most situations. There’s several times I’ve convincingly taken a 1v2 or even a 1v3. The combo of sword/staff is the key for PvP I feel since both have an incredibly powerful survival combo. The 20th point in dueling is also mandatory as it spawns a clone when you dodge, this makes it very hard to track you properly and means you always have clones out to use. I find that I under use the shatter skills since I really don’t want to smash my duelists but they can also be quite clutch.

For a specific variation of my build if you are someone who hasn’t come to grips with the mesmer in PvP and feels to squishy I would recommend going 10/20/15/25/0 as this gives you a fair bit of vit/toughness from your trees while also having some really strong survival in there (regen from phantasms+prot on regen/3% less damage for each illusion you have out). Run ogre runes, cos that dog is stupid, sigil of fire with decoy/signet of illusions/feedback. The utilities can be changed but for hotjoin dancing over the feedback line against any projectile based class really rips them to bits, so many rangers will keep pumping into it resulting in them being downed before you even take any damage.
