I’d like to see more Elementalist representation in NPCs.
Off the top of my head, we have 3 mesmers in the human political scene, (Jenna, Anise and Kasmeer) two necros (Trahearne and Marjory), two guardians (Logan and Braham), two rangers (Rox and Eir), warrior Rytlock, thief Caithe, and I think we’d call Scarlet an Engineer.

I’ve come to believe we may not see a strong ele character until even Anet is happy with the profession.

Elementalists I can name though:
Sieran (Dead)
Zojja (MIA)
Windcaller Kieldia (gone with Queen’s Gauntlet.)
Euryale (Charr warband member til story level 20)
Aetherblade Strikers

(Going through this exercise, I found I had a harder time thinking up thieves. ^Equal Opportunist.)
But please do add to my list.

New/Improved Skills

Matt H.6142

My intent on this post is to make elementalists masters of the elements again.
Ele Burns needs to hurt the most of all professions. Ele Chill needs to last the longest. I hope to do this by making conditions more viable for elementalists. Take all or some suggestions. I’m not saying these are all needed.

I would introduce a ‘sticky’ burn like the Warrior’s Impale. I think ‘Mark of Rodgort’ would be a good name for this. (GW1 skill name.)
Like Impale, the idea is the mark is put on the foe, and it can’t be cleansed. They will reignite like a trick candle when they cleanse the burn until the mark fades.

Rodgort’s Invocation would be a good name for a clone of necro ‘Blood is Power.’ Give self 10 Might, and burn foe. (Burn self for balance?) Fire IX is good for stacking might, and would be OP with this skill, but I feel too much like a wind up toy with this trait, that winds down when I switch to other elements. This skill offers some leading power and might sustainability. It also means Fire XI is not a requirement when building a power spec.

I’d like to see Chill duration increases in Ele traits, and no other profession.
Introduce the new condition Frostbite, which is a frozen/torment combo. This will allow the return of GW1 skill Winter’s Embrace.
Insert additional GW1 skills that have a situational chill, like if a foe’s endurance is less than your own.

I’ve no complaints with Air.

We need a bleed on Earth focus. Perhaps Magnetic Aura causes reflected projectiles to bleed? It’s the one ele weapon that can’t reach the 20 stack bleed other combos make possible. (As situational as the other weapon combos make getting the 20 stack bleed.)
Gain bonuses for comboing one attunement’s conditions with another. See Ash Blast, blind foes that are burning.

-Gushing/Rant Start-
I’ve returned to my ele, my main, for several hours since Dec 10th. It was a lot of fun, and a lot of frustration. I think the change did open up some build diversity. It was the first time I swore about an opposing ele with meteors hitting for 3-5k.
I’ve done 30 fire/air. 30 Fire/Earth. 20/10/10/30 for an aura build. These were all good for a few situations, but they were all so glass.
I think the profession still suffers from being shoehorned into the glass cannon trope though. Some proud eles say they never lose to a thief, but I doubt that was true if the thief snuck up behind them with a s/d. I think my meteor shower did once wipe a whole party in PVP though. I’m sure an ele is devastating when supported in team match ups, but I only ever play quick matches.
I think we need to see Ele with the most scholar health, and necro with least. I think that would force more Necro diversity as well, because I know when I learned necro had death shroud I wouldn’t invest anything in health/toughness.
-End-

Stun Break Stats

in Elementalist

Posted by: Matt H.6142

Matt H.6142

I’ve poured through the wiki’s stun break page to give you these numbers, and how eles are really needing some help here.

Across all professions, stun break skill have an average 48 second cooldown. Ele’s average stun break cooldown is 63. Mesmer’s is 31, not factoring in 2 or 3 mantra charges.

Ele Arcane Shield stun break 75 cool down with 3 blocks. Guardian Shield of Wrath, not a stun breaker, 3 blocks, 45 seconds.

Ele Mist Form Stun breaker 3 second invulnerability, movement. Skill lock. 75 second cooldown. Engineer Elixir S 3 second evade, movement. Skill lock. 60 second cooldown. Ranger Protect Me. Stun Breaker 6 Second “no damge” with pet. No Skill Lock. Necro Spectral Walk, 30 second swiftness, 60 second cooldown.

Ele Armor of Earth. Self Stability and Protection for 6 seconds. 90 Second cooldown. Guardian Stand Your Ground 5 second stability to self and allies. 30 second cooldown.
Guardian Hold the Line. Not stun breaker. Protection and Regen to Allies. 4 and 6 seconds respectively. 35 second cool down.

Most professions have a teleport, quickness or dodge roll stun breaker. Since April Ele only has the skill locking mist form. The heal in mistform may have seemed OP, but was it any different than Necro Consume Conditions?

It was a nice try to spread ele stun breakers to other skill types, but the balance was broken. Please fix.

Ele is 3rd most created profession

in Elementalist

Posted by: Matt H.6142

Matt H.6142

A new article today shows us the elementalist is the 3rd most created profession tied with thief. Mesmer is actually the least. This surprises me because I see a lot more mesmers in game. I think a lot of eles have been benched recently. I hardly see RTL used in WvW since the nerf. No burning speed lines in Clockwork Chaos. Please don’t post why this is. Most of the forum says that. Share your thoughts on the profession distribution.

Let's get serious - State of Elementalist

in Elementalist

Matt H.6142

Mechanically, it is a weapon swap. It’s just we can’t swap to ranged skills with daggers. So my point is why we couldn’t have ranged skills and melee skills in dagger like necro, or focus skills with damage like necro. Or how about off hand scepter. If eles could dual wield scepters it would be a unique flavour for eles. The off hand skills we have are pretty poor besides earthquake and churning earth. Or a ranged attunement.
Say we just wrote off offhand, eles really only have 12 weapons skills, up from 10 for other classes. I’m liking the phrase going around we do double the work for the same (or less) reward.

I’m still against weapon swap. That is what attunement is basically. I think it’s the offhand weapons that needs fixing. Necro dagger and focus have great utility and Mesmer Phantasmal Duelist (and to a lesser extent, warden) are great to drop on foes while staying out of arms reach. I don’t see the synergy with our scepter/dagger combo, and as much as I like focus it’s got no damage.

Thanks to this thread I actually caved and changed my spec to include evasive arcana, and that did make things a lot more fun as an ele. I’m rolling all over the place anyway, might as well get some utility out of it.
I just have never understood the idea we run this glass profession into melee with skills like RTL and burning speed. I mean I love being up there as opposed to playing Simon Says rolling through my skills with staff.
But we are definitely the poorest scholars. Necros have nearly all conditions and a second health bar. Mesmers can stealth and multiply. And I die a little each time I see the 7k backstab from thiefs. That’s about half of the lifepool right there.
Anyway, my opinion shared a thousand times over this forum, but maybe here’s a novel thought.
Why don’t eles have conditions on their autoattacks? Dragon’s Claw. No Burning. Water 2 – Cone of Cold – No Freezing. I know you could add some with that one glyph, and it went from NU to sometimes since it got stun break, but I’d rather have another skill than this one that gives the skills the conditions they should already have. Too OP – See Necro Scepter.
There, yours to enjoy. I now share in your beliefs we need to spread the Arcana trait wealth over at least 2 more traits, and to see some patches that give the ele some new threats.

I was doing the skipping stones jump puzzle and raged quit before going to a mesmer portal to the end Before that, I saw a thief on the first stop and I just wished his scorpion wire could just pull me up, and to know the devs want some portal mechanics in other professions, I think some of the existing pull skills could be the answer. Scorpion wire, magnet, and spectral grasp make perfect sense to me. I especially like the idea of the latter grabbing you and hoisting you up. Because of the potential for trolling when this is turned on, perhaps give an option in the setup to disable ally pulls, or it only works on party members.

Death Shroud: How would you write about it?

in Lore

Posted by: Matt H.6142

Matt H.6142

I’m just starting to level a necromancer. I get a great deal of satisfaction corrupting boons. Me <— smug face.
I posted some months ago about necros vs. Zhaitan powers. Recently accepted that necro minions are more a collection of dead body parts pulled from the ground rather than the disrespectful raising of a person’s form. Zhaitan is like an identify thief today.

Anyway, Death Shroud. What do you think Death Shroud is?
I know the mechanic used to be like an out of body experience, complete with a tether to your actual body. You would say the necromancer leaves his body behind and his soul moves on. The screen still takes on its green hue like you are somewhere different. This kind of lives on in Spectral Walk now. It doesn’t seem like that’s the current version of death shroud though. Body and soul move together in this form, and never have to go back.
To me, with it being a shroud, I picture life force is warped into a second skin or barrier to absorb damage. It works visually because you are covered in this black flame.

Let me know how you envision it? Planeswalker or energy armor.

Change to Magnetic Grasp

in Elementalist

Posted by: Matt H.6142

Matt H.6142

So more options = bad? Ok…

But seriously, how can you not see this as a buff? You can now immobilize WITHOUT jumping, or get a finisher when you choose to jump. The animation also seems less prone to getting stuck and ccing yourself.

By this logic then, the mesmer’s phase retreat should let you choose to make a clone and/or teleport, and the thief’s infiltrator’s arrow should let you blind and/or teleport.

Earth 3 Dagger opinions

in Elementalist

Posted by: Matt H.6142

Matt H.6142

You want to know what kind of freedom the new skill gives us? Well I won’t be pulling myself into HB or guardian bubbles that were started after I cast MG anymore, that’s for sure.

I’m still not decided on whether or not I think the change is good because it’s no longer possible to do the MG-EQ combo, but there are some upsides to it as well. Also found out the delay makes this skill useless as an escape tool which is kind of disappointing. That saved my life a lot of times.

I imagine they could still counter the leap if they saw it coming, but I can see why the option not to pull yourself into a stun would be tempting. I’m mostly PvE/WvW, so that situation rarely comes up, and is why it’s wrecked my style.

Earth 3 Dagger opinions

in Elementalist

Posted by: Matt H.6142

Matt H.6142

I don’t understand any of your play styles to think this is a welcome change. I want to be pulled to my target. I’d like it more if I had the option to set magnetic leap to auto-complete, because having to tap the skill twice wrecks my style. And ele is my main since launch.
It needs some serious polish because it looks and sounds awful. I miss the shoulder rush. The leap looks like you were catapulted against your will. It sounds pitiful hearing that tink of the single dagger hit and then you’re back to the earth crunching of Impale. This change just seems like scrapping the original idea because they couldn’t fix the bugs.
If you wanted a long distance immobilize, I’d recommend signet of earth. It’s got 1200 range, and no projectile to reflect.
Those talking about getting a projectile and leap finisher now must not have been aware of how it worked before, so I have to discredit those opinions.
And for those talking about having more freedom and tactics, I want to hear them. I can see why you’d be happy for the ranged immobilize, but then you’re gonna be switching to another attunement I’d imagine and waste magnetic leap. Or maybe you use flash for a closer making the leap wasted again.

What exactly is the GW2 Necromancer lore? How is their power different than Zhaitan’s, other than Zhaitan’s power to raise leagues of undead.
I remember Trehearne says at one point that his minions were never actually alive, so where does he get the flesh for his flesh golems? In GW, the minions came from corpses. Are necromancers more of a cross-dimensional summoner now?

Speaking of GW, necros had one spell to take control of undead minions. How was this lost? Are the risen different than undead? Would the lore go that necros can’t break Zhaitan’s influence I wonder.

Just looking for plugs in the story holes. That’s what makes a good game great.

I speculate they destroyed themselves so utterly they couldn’t come back, or perhaps they didn’t actually die. (GW2 – Jormag edition spoiler?)

Also, if Zhaitan learns everything his minions knows, wouldn’t the mentor dying just blow a hole right through the plans? In the Orders storyline, the Risen didn’t act on the password Tybalt knew, though it was easy to guess.
