Could really feel the improvement from last BWE. It was very reactive, and I could feel I could be in all places at once. Breaking stealth because of the some of the dodge rolls did have me swearing though. I think many of us did.
However, there are a lot of one shot kills on thieves right now. I saw a 10k gun flame, not including the double hit. Dragon hunters pack a bunch too. I hope that fragments trap is broken, cuz I saw several 5ks on that. I had a mix of berserker, knight and Valkyrie gear.

Spec Overload Water right, and you get something like this –

All Professions Level 80
I just created a character, went into HotM, equipped an off-hand weapon (unlocks at level 6), and hopped back into PvE; all that happens is the off-hand weapon has a lock icon appear over it (you can still unequip it) and the associated skills are disabled.
It’s reasonable to expect the same thing will happen if you’re wielding a weapon you no longer qualify to use: it’ll stay in your hand, but it and all its skills will be locked.
Nice. Thank you. Very clever.
Still, I’m petitioning that after unlocking the new weapon, it can be used regardless of specialization. Leave the spec to augment the new content though.
All Professions Level 80
1. Mid range offhand damage was missing for ele. Aoe auras without weapon, trait, or attunement consideration. (Aftershock your ally when they have rapid fire focus). Boon share means group armour of earth and half the effort needed for fire blasts. Then Mesmer can pass it back as well. 20 stacks of stab. This means arcana isn’t necessarily a must though it does make the best choice for boon share
Group super speed for your “escape”. If you get caught it was bad positioning. What happens when you combo super speed and mist form?
Largest area chill for elementalist to date.
Ele can overload fire during group fire blasting to contribute might.
Traits do need a shout reduction option. (Is that present in any elite specs? Necro greatsword has a skill based one.). Stability in tempest would help. Armor of earth would be a bit much if needed to get one off.
All Professions Level 80
If your playstyle is nothing but blasting fire fields and invul, then don’t use horn. That play is well covered already. If horn had all that, it would invalidate the other weapons. The group support means others can blast the fire field for you, and they don’t have to huddle in a circle. A 600 long carpet vs a 240 ring?
And now there is a aoe reflect in shouts and I don’t need staff or powerful aura to do it.
All Professions Level 80
It’s not impossible. In the first Beta, there was a closing event that caused you to become Branded if you died, and then you could defeat your once-allies. It was sort of an elder dragon zombie outbreak.
All Professions Level 80
Thanks for the source quote that says you have to equip the elite spec to use the new weapon. I’m still curious what will happen to the weapon when the spec is dropped.
We’ve not seen forced disarming in the tech yet.
There are weapon improvement traits in most every spec (except ele). Which spec would you put the new weapon improvement traits but the elite one? It’s not to give an advantage over core. You should see I want to ex. equip war horn without tempest. The tempest spec only adds ally stun break. I do believe you need HOT to be able to use it though. Pay for new content. Same with shouts. Equipping tempest would be smart if you want bonuses for that skill type, but what if one skill has good utility with the rest of the core kit. I have to equip an entire spec for one skill? It would be like Mesmer needing inspiration to run time warp because it’s a glamour.
All Professions Level 80
I’m not sure where you got that from my op. In short, aftering unlocking the new weapon, it makes no sense that it can only be equipped with the elite spec slotted. Mechanically, what would the game do about un equipping skills and weapons when I change the elite out? What if I switch out on accident and now I have to reset everything?
Are you saying it’s not fair I can use new paid content unless it locks in 1/3 of my spec selection? This must be on the belief the new content puts out more damage. See guardian and ele elite specs to disprove that.
All Professions Level 80
Reposting this Elite idea from general discussion.
Put the Stunbreak on Rebound, demote to utility. Your next skill after stunbreak is probably your life saver, so 25% cooldown on that will be nice. Slot it into the trait as well for a free reduction.
Rework Eye of the Storm to Elite, creating the non-transform tornado people have been asking for.
Rework classic Tornado into an Elite Cantrip or Signet.
Some old GW1 names – Master of Magic, Ward Against Harm, Double Dragon.
All Professions Level 80
Warhorn cooldowns are not much different than most skill 4 and 5 ele skills. All are from 25 to 50 seconds.
All Professions Level 80
Gliph takes up an utility slot.
Those fields come “free” with warhorn“Free” he says. Yeah, it’s totally free, just ignore the fact that by taking warhorn, you lose 2 blast finishers, an invuln, a personal reflect, a projectile destruction field, and/or one of the very VERY few mobility skills that Ele gets. Not to mention the fact that you have to take the Tempest trait line to even use the warhorn in the first place. So, which trait line are you going to sacrifice to run Tempest? Water? There goes your sustain, cantrip cooldown and condi removal. Arcane? There goes your access to boons. Fire? Kiss your damage goodbye.
Dust Storm isn’t even all that good! It’s two blinds at most per target, on a 30 second cool down. Glyph of storms (earth) has five times that on a 60 second cool down.
And gain the largest fire field, second longest water field for ele, boon share, push, pull, and max cap breaking blind. If your party isn’t helping you, then look out for #1 and run focus.
Drop water for the condi cleanse overload and grandmaster, breakbar, and extra protection.
All Professions Level 80
I don’t even know what you’re saying through the profanity filter, but warhorn and shouts cast quicker than most glyphs. Yes, overloads are the longest casts in the game, second only to Guardian full heal, but they give out something during the entire cast time, and if they complete, big pay off.
All Professions Level 80
Since the June patch, ele weapon cooldown traits in the other lines give 33% cooldown reduction, and that is usually bundled with another bonus for the attunement.
Water Globe would be almost 30 seconds and Sand Storm would be 20 seconds.
When you are asking for a 25 second cooldown, which would trait down to 16 seconds, do you still think it’s fair?
All Professions Level 80
Warhorn Fire 5 is the biggest fire field seen to date. Damage can change, and he was in Crusader gear, so it won’t be the biggest dps.
Glyph of Storms does not pulse might in fire, sandstorm can’t blind more than 5 targets, icestorm doesn’t heal and in any attunement, it doesn’t move, so easy to avoid.
If you like damage builds, do what’s been working for you already. If you’d like more support, look at Tempest.
All Professions Level 80
I think warhorn is the most impactful offhand available now.
Offhand dagger and focus were kind of dull for their passive nature in half the attunements, and neither synergized well with scepter’s range besides blasting fire fields. That 600 range on warhorn is a nice middle ground between dagger and scepter.
I saw that the ele can continue to cheat the max 5 target cap (I’m sure Feel the Burn will be capped on launch.) See Dust Storm, Lightning Ball, Cyclone (and maybe tidal surge.) And the biggest fire field we’ve seen to date.
I’m happy for the aoe magnetic aura, and to a lesser extent, the aoe frost aura.
Armor of Earth and then Heat Sync means the biggest share of stability possible. Imagine then Mesmer signet of Inspiration handing it back for 20 stacks of stab? Lock it up with sand squall. Pumping out improved protection to almost 100% uptime if spec’d right.
Armor of Earth and a breakbar would see the earth overload almost always complete.
Would be nice if you could get that Rebound off before armor of earth or mist form.
Perhaps the aoe stunbreak should move to Rebound (literally more appropriate) and then Eye of the Storm could maybe drop a mini-elite Tornado? Promote eye of the storm to Elite.
The traits are niche but not as game changing as say the Chrono Phantasm 1-UP or clone dodge. The stun cleanse is nice (Earth’s embrace only working when health drops below 50%) as well as the debilitating cleanse.
And Karl, you rock my socks every time! Loved all the noise puns in the blog, and your final statement certainly had me rallying behind you!
“The tempest cannot be stopped; your enemies cannot endure. Press forward!”
All Professions Level 80
Is it certain only the elite spec can “hold” the weapon newly introduced to the class?
This would mean when you drop the Spec, the weapon would have to automatically be unequipped (and what if your inventory is full?), or put up a message you can’t unequip the spekittenil you change your weapon, which just seems dunce to me.
I can understand dropping hero point into training in order to unlock the new weapon, but the rest doesn’t make sense.
Same with the new utilities. A little easier to achieve elite spec exclusivity, because the skill bar is so easy to manipulate, but still clunky.
Now the elite spec should certainly improve the new weapon and utilities to warrant picking it when building like that, but exclusivity it should not.
Even if current design was exclusivity, I’m sure we will see a roll into core later down the line.
All Professions Level 80
I experienced some inconsistent range with Ele scepter auto Ice Shards. The projectiles were hitting a teragriff in SilverWastes between Red and Indigo during a bull escort event, but there were no hits registering. I had some luck at a 300 range, and later in an area slightly further from where I first witnessed it, it seemed to be working at a longer range again.
All Professions Level 80
Water is useless for you. You can only share auras from weapon skills, making aura-share really bad. I think the new direction kills your build. Sorry.
The current game has the same tooltip but signet share actually works. It should probably read as Skill Use, but the wiki says trait auras work as well, so that water adept one should be good. You just can’t share combo auras, light aura from radiance runes, and I don’t think Arcane Resurrection shares beyond the revived either.
All Professions Level 80
Going to do the same with a protection build which was 3,0,1,1,2 with cantrip cooldown and arcane cooldown (shield, blasts, burning fire, armor of earth)
Specialize in Fire, Earth, Arcane.
+Earth’s Embrace and Elemental Shielding Can’t choose more than one adept now. I’d choose as I keep Armor of Earth on my skill bar.
+Geomancer’s Training
+Elemental Contingency/Final Shielding
+Diamond Skin or Stone Heart
-Cantrip reduction
(Diamond Skin would be good as the build was condition weak before)
Lava Font merge allows for Power Overwhelming or Burning Precision which is new
Fire, Water, Arcane,
-Earth Line Protection
+Water Condi Removal (Could maybe swap out Burning Fire, but 3>1, or 3=3 if stop drop and roll is picked up but that’s 2 to 1 traits.
+Bountiful Power
Getting a lot out of these Earth and Fire changes now that attributes are out of the equation.

It is currently possible to go 2,1,1,3,0 and share all the aura bonuses with signets with allies. That’s swiftness, fury and protection. (This along with rune of radiance seemed to really support a small group in WvW.)
I’m trying to achieve the same result with Specializations with little or no opportunity cost.
My conclusion:
+Water is a given for Powerful Auras.
+Fire and Earth allows for Protection and now access to Written in Stone (signets with reduced cooldown and always active passives.)
-Forfeit Zephyr’s Boon (Swiftness and Fury).
+Gain Fury from Persisting Flames though instead
+Might from One with Fire (but will probably need to run Burning Fire)
+Air Signet Passive never goes away
-no group speed though.
—Other Theories—
Water has the new Frost Aura minor for a weaker protection. Requires that Powerful Auras not be limited to Weapon Skills.
Fire For Conjurer+One with Fire (Water line for some condi cleanse)
Air for Zephyr’s Boon, could see a lot of Shocking Aura uptime now.
-Forfeit Written in Stone
Air, Earth, Water,
+all bonuses
-nothing on signet use or fire attunement
Anything I haven’t considered?

Long story short: Next patch, I’d like to see less death shroud, more classic necromancer themes. More disease. More immediate access to poison outside of staff.
——
I think death shroud is in a really good place now, but so much so, it’s really taken over the profession. This becomes apparent when you see 4 of the 5 XIII traits had to do with death shroud, and during Ready Up this week, the hosts said necro’s place is not in vigor and protection, but in death shroud.
Though through traits, death shroud has all kinds of variety and utility, when I’m playing I often don’t think about that. I combo torment and fear, life siphon, and just autoattack until I can think there’s a weapon skill I need now.
Dark path definitely needs a fix, because there seems to be a lag between casting the skill and the projectile firing. Dark path is a throwaway skill.

There is definitely a noticeable gap until the portal is active again. I wasn’t sure if it was a time thing or if I had to move my character a bit to find the activation site. Might have been added because twitchy fingers were burning through the 20 uses too much.

Hastened Destruction: Apply Quickness for x seconds and x stacks of Confusion.
The idea is pretty simple, but would have a lot of play. Your foe is attacking faster, moving through their skills quicker, and activating confusion more frequently.
It is a high risk move, but I think would work well in a high pressure situation when health is low (the foe’s hopefully more than yours.)
Counterplay is to cleanse the confusion and enjoy the free quickness.
Think about giving this to a ranged foe and then catching them in feedback.

Just saw the dulfy videos on the tireless tools. Anet, you really have to change the player animations for these. You are shredding in the face by the harvesting minion because you put your head in the blades, and a bit more circumstantial, the logging minion sometimes eats you along with the tree.

All Professions Level 80
Does anyone know what bugs longbow out? I switch targets, and then activate rapid fire, but sometimes it seems to fire at my last target. How frustrating is it to watch rapid fire tick down, and my target isn’t even being hit!
Speaking of frustrating, Signet of Renewal really needs a rework. The only way for a ranger to mass clear conditions, and I have to be mindful of how far my pet is, and sometimes those things just get lost unless they are in passive mode. This skill needs to always be linked to the ranger.

As an ele, do you ever focus down phantasms and minions, or do you stick to the player? I find the damage is really high in the minion master builds for mesmers and necros, and all the body blocking cuts down on my damage output. Since the patch, I’ve found myself quite capable as an ele, and have solo’d a number of classes now, but when a mesmer stuns me and seems to OHKO from there, I still want to say the ele needs to be buffed.
This one mesmer really had my number. Stunned, immobilized, flurried, mind wracked. How do you counter that? I run armor of earth and arcane shield, but the mesmer is invulnerable to the shield blast during flurry.
I’m running 30-0-10-10-20 which gives me added fire blasts and maximum protection uptime.

FA was green this week, and I do love Overgrowth. It will be when I’m Red I’ll really be swearing about those advantages.
Invulnerable travel. Omniscient sentry turrets. Supercannons in our backyard to defend the towers. Mortar that can defend Supercannon. (Racked up a lot of lovely kills with that one.)
3 capture points on Observatory. 3 mobs to kill in keep. Healing and Condition Removal Buff.
Whereas
Red has the Mechanical Devourers in its backyard which we’ve turned on them every single time we’ve taken them to tear down their wall in 20 seconds.
A zone wide collection event for an AOE attack.
Blue has a chill buff that works against them if they have to retake their zone regardless if the enemy is defending or not.
A zone wide collection event for a transform after killing a veteran.

I’ve only solo’d a thief once on ele, and that was zerker fresh air build. (It felt good.) And I get it how quickly a thief will fall to ele aoe, but this has usually only been when I was with other people they had to fight against. It feels very much like a thief will go straight for my ele though and I’m 2 OHKO.
Anyway, what gear do I need to help? All the toughness gear seems to be a real sacrifice to damage output. I started the game in undead carrion, 0-10-30-10-20 and that didn’t seem to help. Zerkers been fun in a ‘finally big numbers’ kind of way.
I’ve been enjoying this Elemental Surge build, which means I can bypass precision so long as my Critical Damage is high for some good damage. The pvp soldier rune really helped me survive too. That was 0-25-0-15-30 build.
And you’re so right Juno, I do remember the thief having a couple (not quite 5) stacks of that guard junk. I have 9 toons. I’m nowhere near that with any of them. Needless to say, I’m very interested in account wxp and the changes to zerker coming. On the point of the 10k backstab, it all may be irrelevant come tomorrow.
All Professions Level 80
If only thief venom was as good as some of your words, ouch.
—-
If you read nothing else, let it be this:
As a thief, do you judge other thieves if they don’t have the damage output?
What gear should I get if I want to survive that mesmer shatter and still be able to see a player’s health drop when I attack?
——
I clearly state I posted in the ele forum about the 10k backstab on my ele, and here I’m saying I had my face melted by a shatter mesmer on my thief. I’m here to say any such OHKO isn’t fun to receive. I’m not here to say I want my thief doing massive damage. To my original point though, the only people to comment on my play style have been thieves on my thief. Is this a thief culture to judge others on their damage output?
I guess I’m more a roleplayer than a pvper. And yes, I’ve only done HotJoin because I fear elitism in TPvP, and if I am as bad as I think I am, you’re welcome.
At creation, I thought I’d play a carrion venom thief, but that was really bad damage back then. It felt stupid watching my charr whittle a stag in world so slowly. And no stunbreaker on venom was really unattractive.
So I went berserker, and that was good, I could actually see chunks of the health bar disappear now. But I don’t see anything I like in Critical Strikes, so my output can never be these 5-10k hits.
So my build is 0-0-20-20-30. This gives me hidden thief and the 25% health stealth. Dodge might and cripple cleanse. 1500 steal on 20s cooldown and thrill of the crime. Zerker amulet.
The fury gets my crit chance up. I can swift and stealth with steal without a target. Haste for more damage output. Shadowstep and trap to get me out of trouble. I think this will be good for backcapping and scouting. And I’m not a terrible teammate. I can usually score top player in something in this style.
Can anyone suggest a different type of gear for me in PVP/PVE?
All Professions Level 80
well, I mainly do d/p for shadow shot, and s/d for larcenous strike. I like the style. Is it my fault if the skills aren’t as good as say pistolwhip? But no, I can’t say I’ve seen my backstabs do more than 3k. That stealth steal build required I couldn’t put much or any into deadly arts or critical strikes. But when someone commented on my play, I considered putting 20 out of acrobatics (to keep me moving) and into critical.
All Professions Level 80
Well, the Clock and Dagger was the other 5k of my health, and this was a little group fight in wvw, and the thief got me before I even knew he was part of it. They nerfed haste to allow players time to react. I’m looking for the same here.
All Professions Level 80
I’m not a good thief, I get it. But it’s only been while playing my thief, (which is the rare female charr thief) that I’ve had other thieves comment on how low my damage output is. I’ve just posted about the 10k backstab I received on my ele, so yea, I know dealing out 2k hits with my thief isn’t good.
To increase my survivability, I use shadowstep, assault trap (in pvp, you can be across the map in a pinch) and haste to try and increase my damage output. I have a 1500 stealth steal, on the shortest cooldown. It’s an opportunistic build. I’ll be the one that catches runaways. And hopefully, won’t be around to go down to a group.
This is my style, and I was quite happy with it, until I was bested by a shatter spam faceroll Mesmer. Words were said, but anyway, Anet, things like this is why we can’t play the way we want to play.
All Professions Level 80
If we want to balance this game, this cannot happen. I was sore from 5k backstabs, but when I saw that douzy in my combat log, well, here’s my post.
The only thing I’ve seen higher was a 15k Eviserate, and well, we don’t see that build very often.
I don’t know if he burst me down to get that 2HKO, but if you can reliably get numbers like that, why do thieves even need to try skilled play.
