Start slow.
I would recommend rifle as it is the most straight forward weapon.
Then maybe a gadget, a turret and an elixir.
Understand that and then replace one with a kit. Use it as a second weapon until you get the feel. Then progress from there. Maybe replace the kit with a different one to get the feel of that one.
Once you understand the skills, then it will flow better. Soon you’ll be playing Mozart in your mind.

I can sympathize. The play of hot join can seem very shallow, and yes. thieves will abound. But what you should try before you go is to build defensively- too defensively until you can slow the game down a little bit and get your feet underneath you. Once you get a little more comfortable, then you can start to understand the dynamics and the plays.
Give it some time. Come in with an open mind and just look to learn. You’ll get there if you keep an open mind.

Turrets have NO play value - solution(s)

The problem with turrets, well, ok there are many, but the root problem is they are just not fun. There is no play in turrets. And as long as there is no play, they will wither because the devs just don’t know what to do about them.
Let’s look at some of the issues:
They are low health
They are immobile
They are dumb
Overcharge is not on-demand
Traits are spread out and are not particularly helpful
And currently they (most) are broken

Why are they this way?
Low health: Honestly, if they were high health their damage would have to be reduced.
Immobile: Dev’s want to keep this unique (and I do too).
Dumb: LOS issues, and too much AOE to screw up the new mechanics.
Broken: C’mon, can we get these fixed already??

What I propose:

Remove overcharges and replace with defensive bubbles.
Bubbles cover the turret
Bubbles are on demand by turret
Bubbles are available every 15 seconds
Bubbles last ~3 seconds
Bubbles prevent offensive turret behavior
Bubbles would reduce incoming damage by x% (i’m thinking 80%)

This alleviates the immobile and low health issue. Also adds to reactive play and removes some of the passive.

In order to compensate for the loss of overcharge I would recommend increasing the turrets’ performance.
Things I would suggest would be:
Increase ROF
Increase damage
Remove some of the condition
Increase the base hp
Allow them to pierce
Increase AOE
*(not suggesting all of them at the same time)

For example:
Rifle Turret: Increase ROF to every second and reduce the damage.

Traiting:
We have:
Blow them up for some damage and a push (ok, but we already have mines)
Turrets regenerate
Turrets are tougher
Turrets do more damage (slightly)
Turrets can be remotely placed (although this is pretty handy)
Turrets can be repaired if you flail your wrench like a madman
And who stays in wrench to repair turrets??

How about:
Deployable Turrets: How come I can place them on a ledge but have to blow them up because I can’t reach them?
Add to this trait the ability to AOE pick up.

Combine metal plating and auto tool installation (to the adept level)
Move Riffled Turrets to master
New trait: When turrets drop below 25% health, they double ROF for 10 seconds (90 cd) grandmaster. And can I get a ‘ker-chucking’ sound when they go crazy??
What this does encourage taking the adept trait (tougher/regen) to allow the full o/c behavior)

Or, new gm: Turret recharge is halved.
New trait- when bubbles are active, they reflect ( I would replace the heal in the wrench) This would allow us some defense to ‘hide’ behind them.

One final thought.
They need to be more damage neutral. They shouldn’t offer more performance to a condi spec than to a power spec.

Nah, they all kind of suck. We suck a little more than others, but it should be enough incentive to not get downed.

What I will comment on though, is that I don’t think power engies should be punished with down state abilities. Or rather, condi engies should not be rewarded.

You have two choices. Either move toward them or convince them to move toward you.
Use skills like rocket boots, magnet but don’t forget about terrain. Hide behind buildings and try to force them to come to you.
Once you are closer, then you can use skills like oil slick, box of nails, chill grenade, glue bomb, etc.
Keeping them close is easier than getting them close.

Or, just go grenadier and out-range them.

People always make these threads about turret cds being too long and their lack of mobility. You people need to understand that it will never happen. Turrets are area control. They were designed to be put down and remain there…

The 5 minute timer begs to differ.

I don’t necessarily disagree with you, though. I would like to see a tweak that would allow the turret to become available if it becomes disabled by the timer. No cool down if it somehow makes it to 5 minutes.

Like most utilities for other classes, these should add flavor and synergy to a build.
Currently, these are all underperforming to some degree although I think throw mine is pretty close.

I would also like to see utility added that makes this class more desireable in groups.

Utility Goggles: Create a reveal around your location that shows all stealthed characters for 10 seconds. 60 second cool down, everyone sees the field including enemies.
Counters mesmer veil trains and pesky perma-stealths.

Rocket Boots: Treat it like blink with similar cooldowns but allow us a vertical to jump like jump shot. I’m thinking like blink offers a vertical if you target the underneath of a ‘shelf’. Likewise, treat it like a leap aka- gap closer.

Throw mine: I’m good with its current state, although I would enlarge the mine field mines radius- much too small (meaning, their triggers).

PBR: Allow for multi-hit. I want to be able to knock the zerg off the wall when they rush my tower. Knock em all down like bowling pins. 60 sec cool down, reduce the damage from its current state.

Slick Shoes: Drop the cool down and make the toolbar speed mean something.

Aside from the above, one of the issues I have is alot of our skills are designed to blow-back or launch. They scatter mobs to a degree when we all know AOE is king in this game. I’d like to find an ability or trait or something that allows us to ball up mobs, much like the KR bombkit.

Post your ideas and give the Dev’s something to consider when they eventually tweak these.

I have been using thumper and rocket when taking camps lately. Along with rifle and bombs I tend to get the job done. Course, the heavy lifting is done by supply crate, but it’s nice for a change.

I am having a similar issue. Seems to have downloaded ok, but after the count down, it simply hangs.
I tried the above and it made no difference.
Not sure how to provide the info baram did, but I’m sure there is a post explaining it.

Engineer's uses in WvW?

I think the engi does many things well in WvW, with the caveat that you have to spec for what you are doing, and trying to perform another role, will leave you less effective.
Tower defense: Grenades and Flamethower. Hit through the gates or rain down from above.
Skirmish: Dual Pistol/HGH. Strong 1vx- great roamer build.
Tankcat: Toolkit. Maybe the most trolly build in WvW.

I like all of these, but you can’t maneuver between them easily. Find a style you like and you will enjoy this class.

Tbh unless you facing a zerg piercing shots is crap. Your #1 Pistol skill is AOE, #2 Poison piercing really isn’t that great either because the skill doesn’t always hit in a straight line (currently it doesn’t even do a fan attack), #3 is AOE already, #4 is blowtorch which goes through targets already. Also did you ask the enemy to stack in straight line for you?

So no, it’s pretty worthless compared to getting another heal and +5 stacks of might in a 1 vs several.

In a zerg vs zerg, yes its nice.

Most cases, yes, but did you notice how smartly he used the downed player to ‘line-up’ his shots aiming thru them to the standing player?

Well played Mask, although, when I saw the title, I was hoping you tried something other than P/P and elixirs.

Something to consider with balance is not just what skills each class has but also the armor and hp pool each class has to draw from. Ele’s have the lightest armor and the smallest hp pool in the game.
Now, I’m not too happy about the grenade change, but I don’t think one can draw comparisons based on ‘versatitlity’ of skills alone.

What I think would be nice is if we could carve out our own little niche. I think explosives and knockback might be the key. Explosives aren’t all that exciting (especially in light of the current patch) but knock back can be fun as hell. I’d like to see the devs focus a bit on this aspect and help define this class little better. IE- Big Ol Bomb. What Engie doesn’t love this skill?!?

Personal Battering Ram- begs to be better.
Throw mine – in a pretty good place except the tool belt skill.
Thumper- bring down that tool belt and the overcharge cd.
Rocket boots could be designed into a kind of knockback/blowout.

I think Engies are a great addition to this game, we just need a little more definition/ rounding out.

Siege will despawn if not ‘refreshed’ and unfinished siege will despawn much quicker.
Face the way you want siege to face, otherwise you may waste time turning the particular siege.
Every spawn camp has at least 2 exits to avoid spawn camping.
WvW uses PvE rules.

Elixir gun #2 —>#4 for a nice getaway.
Flame Jet to move people off of your gates (shoots thru walls)
Net Turret when you are running solo. Helps snag thiefs as soon as they pop out of stealth and works to allow you to run away.
Falling damage trait is nice, but you can learn where the short drops are.
Elixir S trait —> Inertial Converter trait with medkit.

You know, at first blush I would like that too, but honestly, it would take away from the game. I remember a zerg running toward me a couple of nights ago. They were running out of a corridor (I was running from their left to right) and I immediately popped a stealth (mesmer) and ran to a crevice in the wall around the corner.
If there had been a rear view mirror, I’d been toast.

Somethings we just need to work at, I think.

Funny enough, I was just poking around with FT yesterday and today. I just can’t make it work for me.

Now, the really, really good: In wvw, defending a gate, it just plain shines. I can really apply alot of damage because, for whatever reason, anet allows flame jet to penetrate walls.
Other than that, and that gets old fast, I get more done on my PP builds.
I will use it for the utility more than anything.

Looking at the OP build, might consider running 15 in tools and 25 in explosives.
Gets you the ‘explosions cause vulnerability for 5 seconds’, which I believe is triggered off of barrage, and still nets you the recharge of the heal from the tool belt.

Based on what I read, and trying to understand the purpose of the build, I was wondering if you had tried thumper in place of rifle. Seems like the knockback would fit better with your theme.

I just don’t get it.

According to wiki, “Blindness is cured on the next outgoing attack, regardless of whether that attack would’ve hit anything if not for the blindness or how long the blindness had been stacked up for.”

As I see it, most people are running their skills on cool-down and most attacks are skill 1 (regardless of cd), which, if missed, is simply the loss of some minor damage.

If it gets cured on the next attack, and that will generally be the #1 AUTO- attack, then how is this condition really all that useful?

Yes, I know it can be timed, but honestly, for the bulk of the game, who is really holding that skill waiting for ‘just the right time’?

Am I misunderstanding this because it seems really weak as conditions go.
Does it get reapplied within an aoe ala smoke bomb?

OK, update time.

ANet responded with instructions on how to accomplish setting up a new email account without using the compromised account. Yay!

What I noticed when I was working on this was that ANet responded to the original email by copying another email address along with the compromised one- and not an email address I use. Hmmm.

I really do not understand this process at all.

I opened a support ticket.
They responded by emailing to me on my account AND another account?!?

This is crazy.

Kudos to ANet though, at least they are responding quickitteno this. Thanks.

Well,

As I feared, ANet is responding via email to the compromised account.

How in the world am I supposed to clear this up if ANet responds to an account that may be compromised?

It’s like some kind of idiotic cycle. There has to be some other way. What ever happened to voice communication? God I miss those days.

Hey gang,

About a week or two ago I was hacked.
A few days before I got an email from ANet thanking me for creating the new account (even though the account had already been created a month prior). I ignored it thinking it was some kind of phishing attempt.
Then, I got an email stating that the account password had been changed.
Then I filed a ticket and got my account back.
I then changed the password for this email account as well as my anet account.

Now, yesterday, the chain has begun again with another email from ANet thanking me for creating this account. Ugh.

They have gotten my email address and somehow created a new account using this email address and then assumed my account.
How you can create a new account TWICE on an existing account, I have no idea.
I have changed the password again (on the email address) as a temp measure, and will continue to change it until I can get the email associated with ANet changed.
I have also moved all valuables to another account.

But that leads me to the advice part:
How can I change my email address when the hacker has this information?
ANet will undoubtedly want to address this via email.

I tried pming Gaile G the first time this happened to no avail.

It’s a refreshing class. Not the generic, been there, done that fantasy prof.
I like the skirmishing.
I like BoB.
I like the versatility.

It’s the only class I can bring myself to play, so take this with a grain of salt.

I think my main gripe is the amount of ‘gotchas’ or caveats in the builds.
Flamthower #2 – do damage but only maximize at a certain range.
Rocket boots – Break immobilize but fall down.
Rifle #4 – launch enemy but fall down.
Grenades work differently in water.
Elixer U – Gain swiftness, self inflict something
I’m sure there are others.
Just seems it’s more difficult to play well than it should be.
RNG
Supply Crate is the outshines all other elites. By a wide margin.

5 days ago I got an email from ANet stating:

I created this account a month or so ago and I ignored the email thinking it might be spam or a phishing attempt.

Uh oh.

Account was not accepting my credentials.
Filed a ticket and got the account back today, missing somethings, gaining others but lost more than I got.

Not bemoaning this, but am curious. How the heck does this happen?
How does an account get made twice?

Bugfix: Fix auto-attack on kits
Change: I’d really like to echo the elixir RNG issue. What I’d like to see is something along the lines of:
If you are < 50% health, elixir does x
If you are immobilized elixir does y

I know that might go way over the top as far as complexity when the engineer is already alot to take in, but I think this would go along way with RNG.

Was on for a short time this morning and hadn’t seen this, but I often pop between kits.
Maybe you were bouncing in and out of water? That will reset your kit to your main weapon.

Look, it was an oversight and has nothing to do with meta or balance. It was clearly unintended and addressed.
Noone likes to see their particular class nerfed, but trust me, this is a good thing. It’s a sign that ANet is watching the game and trying to bring outlier builds in line to make all skills more attractive and thereby making more choices attractive.
If they let this go, all you would see is: ‘Group looking for mine field engineer to go!’

Now, it’s time for an update for all the other issues that need addressing.

My personal favorite (P/S). The survivability of it is unmatched in any engineer setup.
I typically run with bomb kit for BOB which gives me a blind, block, push and launch and by the time I get through using those, I’ve conquered the mob.
This particular setup plays very much like ranger from GW1. Very scirmish-y.

I have the hang of them on land. I have the hang of them under water.
The issue is when I am bouncing between the two terrains during the same battle. It’s awkward and in my opinion, should be reworked.

In the mission I was running, I was under water and using grenades. Then I emerged from the water but there was still water on the ‘floor’. Where I got lost was the targeting circle fell below the water and with all the effects, I missed it and my grenades were well off target because I thought I was still in auto-target mode.

Thanks for the replies guys but I think you misunderstand, I’m not asking for ground targeting in the water, I realize how awkward that would be. I’m asking to have the ground target removed and have the grenades work on land as they do in the water.

Kriaser, this is how I personnaly use grenades and moving from water to land is difficult when using grenades as such.

Kryil, please try to read and understand the OP before replying(second to last sentence). I know it can be hard sometimes.

I just got thru a misson where I was sometimes in water and sometimes out. Using grenades in water is gravy and in my opinion a little OP- not that I’m complaining.
But having to move between water and land with grenades is just difficult.
Going from an auto-target to a ground target is silly.
If they are ground targeted for balance, then I suggest change them to how water battle works and find another avenue for balancing.

In short: No skill (or set of skills) should function differently based on terrain.

Still learning the trade and am happy to stumble upon the combo field mechanic with the healing turret and I’ll have to try it.
That said, I’m really happy with med kit in sPvP for this one reason:
When I am roaming and reach a point that is enemy owned and unoccupied, I immediately begin dropping bandages and the condition remover. Most times I can put down 2 sets before an enemy pops up.
That’s the real benefit of med kit.
