Pointing facts is lashing out now? You’re too sensitive.
None of the things that I suggested needed more than one commander to do. Every server is experiencing the SAB problem. For the first time ever, most of my guild was not in WvW, and they were all in SAB.
However, there were times where you guys clearly had 30-40, would wipe once or twice, and would completely give up for an hour or two. It very clearly was not a numbers issues, because, as I said, we had 10-15 people most of the night, and around 25 when we were at our biggest. I checked this multiple times with /supplyinfo while we were stacking up, and I’m not saying it to make us look better or to make you look worse.
You guys wanted suggestions on how to improve, I gave some. Don’t write them off just because people are doing Super Adventure Box. That’s irrelevant and will not help you improve.
Someone’s kitten y over nothing, lol.
I was there for several hours so I know first hand what the situation was, and there’s some stuff I’m excluding for obvious reasons. But you are free to believe whatever you wish.
Still though, can you not foresee it being a problem when 25% of GW2 players have commander tags?
I do agree with what you’re saying for the present. Right now it is manageable because not that many people have commander tags, and the ones that do actually play WvW and are willing to communicate and compromise with others.
But, when I’m looking a year or so ahead, I see it being a problem when we have 25-50 commanders on a map. That in itself could be a problem, but we will also be getting troll-ish commanders on top of that. What happens when we have 50 commanders and 10 of them are little brats? Confusion and a lack of unification, as well as people arguing back and forth in map or team chat
I don’t deny that the system could use some enhancement, but I dont think we will ever have 25 commanders on a map. We are already at that point where everyone and their mother can afford a tag if they want to (Hell, it only takes a week or two of running CoF 10 times a day, maybe less, to get 100 gold).
Commanding takes a LOT of energy and patience and not everyone is up for the task, and those who do burn out eventually and only serve as support commanders every now and then. Also, not because you have an expensive hat on you head people will blindly follow you. New WvWers might, for a short time, until you prove them you are worth following.
Meteor shower + (fire) glyph of storms + Ice bow 4, with no AOE limit you got yourself a 15 second long attack with 2k++ damage per hit that could actually decimate a zerg.
One player shouldn’t have that much power.
We have commanders like those on CD every now and then. But we approach them and let them know that we have a community and some sort of organization going and after a while they start working together. All it takes is a little communication and an effort to include them into the greater community.
For those commanders that always trying to bully everyone and refuse to listen, I never see more than 5 people following them when there are more competent commanders around, eventually they just go, not without throwing a hissifit.
Our defense was lazy and sloppy. We had 10-15 people most of the night. We would push out, and kill 3 or 4 people, then you would all run away. It was frustrating because we just wanted some fights.
Here’s some suggestions… Use misdirection. You could have sent 5 people to cap east keep, make us respond, and bum rush the garrison. Or vice versa, you could have left 3 people at your tower and taken east quickly.
You could have built a slightly closer open field treb to hit our inner wall, instead of running into a breach defended by people you knew could easily kill you.
I’m the open field, try might stacking, area stability, and moving FORWARD as a group. If you let yourself get pushed, you will die. You cannot just back up or stand still.
As for commanding, bring trays of food for your players. That way, they’ll be a bit stronger in straight up fights and like you a bit more.
Also, supply. That tower was sieged up enough that 3 people could have held it. Use your other 15 to take camps, come back, build open field trebs or other siege, and move up slowly that way.
We tried to do exactly that, but most of our commanders are taking a break from commanding, and most people are in love with the super adventure box (CD is mainly a PvE server after all), so we only had one commander trying to coordinate everything and that can be hard as hell.
Maybe you need to listen to all the commanders? Having several on a map works beautifully when they are communicating and working together. Is one is being difficult then /ignore him, is not that hard.
Create a thief. Hide. Keep moving.
True that!
I wish some commanders had better common sense, and if they see SBI or CD attacking Mag, then don’t attack each other, join in and destroy Mag from the other side! But nope, when CD is invading Mag (and this is on EB) then SBI takes offence because we are not giving them any attention and comes to steal our camps and towers. (And we do the same thing), which makes no sense, strategically, it only causes them to own us both even more.
It does make sense strategically, I think. Neither of our servers has the clout to take down Magoomba so we both try for second. We do this on SBI by taking CD’s stuff whenever you’re occupied with Maguuma. Our scores have been close lately for this reason. Of course, this works greatly in Maguuma’s favour. Me, personally, I just enjoy the fights since my (new) PC can finally handle wvw (and Tomb Raider with TressFX
). I have the good fortune to play during NA primetime when all of our zergs are evenly matched.
If gw2 could be modded I would change ever Maguuma invader toon to this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Goomba.PNG
Ah, points, forgot about those, lol. I barely ever pay attention to points, until Fridays to see who we are go fight against, but lately that doesn’t even matter anymore since we’re stuck on this tier!
Crystal Desert really worked hard this weekend, and the three way fight on SMC was AMAZING. I hope players keep pouring in so we can keep the momentum going.
Sad part, we might be stuck against Mag and SBI for longer :/
I think CD and SBI are rather evenly matched. You have better coverage but we have the bigger zerg during NA primetime.
Magoomba is the bad guy here

To be dreadfully honest, I’ve yet to see mag hold anything without a Zerg to back it.
Mag has the power of numbers and coherency in using team skills, something I wish CD would learn overnight. But Mag needs at least 20 defenders to hold anything. Can’t tell you how many times equal teams have met at towers and after a bit of fun fighting, CD has won. But your zerg strength is beyond anything CD could dream of. I envy it to be honest.
…SBI is also free badges. I have yet to meet an SBI team that I couldn’t hammer down. No offense, just observation.
I have seen them defend their towers with just 3 people, of course, if the zerg attacking the towers grows, so do the defenders. At the end of it this is a numbers game, and they just simply have more. Nothing wrong with that. CD used to be the same way in its heydays.
And they don’t just “have numbers”, they are pretty organized too, I was contesting the keep and SMC the other day, one person slowing a whole server down, and they decided to have none of it, so they posted like 12 people all around SMC and would not let me go through to the green area. That type of effort takes dedication and organization. Most people would say “meh, this is boring I’m doing something else”.
If I see one more stranger Mag PvE commander say “lolol what is wildcreek??” I might go Nick Cage.
At least you don’t have commanders that won’t drop a single seige and let the zerg hit the door until its down lol. Ahh, fun but frustrating times.
I love that intensity Crystal Desert had roughly from 8pm-10pm est. i really hope we can see that again! Felt great to get a queue during an NA primetime on a weekday.
I loved it! It was very reminiscent of the good “old” days (like, what, 3 months ago? lol). If this keeps up I might have to dust my warrior and start commanding again instead of trolling Mag with my thief.
That looks scary, not sure I want to see it now, lol
Honestly i can never grasp this perma stealth thing for theives, can anyone tell me what im doing wrong or link a guide or give me some advice? im assuming it revolves around cloak and dagger? or that pistol dagger leap finisher? or both? any help would be appreciated. It’s been bugging me lol.
There is no such thing. As was explained above, culling might give a thief an extra 2 second “stealth” (depending on the computer), but from the thief perspective that is not happening. What people might be calling “perma stealth” is a crafty thief that can escape and uses the environment to his/her advantage.
Perma-stealth is when a thief is in stealth 100% of the time, no culling involved. You can see how it’s done here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DSbw8Cpy-3s. Very useful for ressing dead mesmers in a keep since you are near impossible to kill. And yes, dead mesmers can stay dead forever, if you swap out armor while dead it will reset the inactivity timer.
Ah! Yeah, I remember now, used to be a nice trick to keep camps from being capped. Super annoying to do, to say the least! And hardly practical in a fight since most of the initiative/skills are used to stealth. However it might help me with contesting SMC and green keep. Will try it tonight and see how it goes. Might have to swim like a pro, tho.

to the thief contesting our keep in EB…. i hate you with a passion.
Why? He has a horrible build, he can’t take or do any damage. All he can is to run. Kinda pathetic.
Anyway, to the thief contesting our keep in EB – please, lay dead longer, so I can use my yak form while dancing.
it was more annoying then anything to tell you the truth. he never downed me or even tried to fight. He would just run away every time I tried to face him.
My goal was not to fight, it’s not smart to fight against 10 people looking for you anyway, but it was overly fun to say the least. Better keep watching those doors.
If this is the thief that runs the all stealth build with the little quaggain pet out all the time….you succeed at being annoying…(and a hint to people trying to follow where he is…DON"T FOLLOW the pet…it is a distraction and is not where he is…it lags behind)
Also….you have about 24 more hours to have fun exploiting culling….oh and now the reveal buff will apply all the time too….3 seconds is forever…..better learn a new trick >:)
If this is not that thief….well…never mind then o.o
I’m not that thief, but I’m glad to know im not the only one contesting the keep.
Also, im not “exploiting” culling, is not my fault you guys keep running straight when I stealth, I mean, why would anyone keep going straight when there are a million enemies that way spamming their skills? I’m exploiting the fault of common sense, if anything.
BTW I’m not running a glass cannon, or bunker, or stealth specific build. There are a million things in between and I found one that suits my play-style and works nicely at escaping.
It’s funny when you guys kill me and then leave the area completely thinking “oh he’s dead and wont come back”. Respawning and running back there takes less than 3 minutes. Just as a heads up because I like the challenge, and hiding gets boring after a while.
My goal was not to fight, it’s not smart to fight against 10 people looking for you anyway, but it was overly fun to say the least. Better keep watching those doors.
You are both dedicated and possibly OCD.
FIVE HOURS!?!?!?
LOL!!! To be honest I did not realize it was that long! But I guess time truly flies when one is having fun!
It got extra fun and challenging when I had to contest SMC and the Keep at the same time and a pesky warrior and mesmer were on my tail most of the time. :/

its normally mag who does extra good on reset then loses some of the lead but still wins…
I bet they’re having so much fun with their keep being contested frequently, better make sure you get that WP on SMC soon.
Just because its reset…, hope it gets better after Tuesday tho.
I just want to share that the current state of the game highly discourages alt play, as I currently estimate it will take the better half of 2013 to finish gearing my main.
I don’t play enough to warrant joining a large guild, so the only path to much of the ascended gear is via the laurel system (why should I benefit from the work of people who play daily several hours when I only play guildwars at most an hour a day?).
Even if I could find time to level my alts (when I log in, I end up using all my time on daily and monthly activity) once they are max level, it would take another half a year to gear them.
Just wanted to get that off my chest, thanks.
Sooo, you are complaining that you don;t have enough time to play and gear up an alt, yet, you discarded all the time you spent on your alts by deleting them? Yep. That makes TOTAL sense.
I have 3 toons (hate the term alt, as having a min is useless, every toon usage is purely situational), all with 3 Exotic armor and weapon sets each, and only play like 10 hours a week, roughly 1.5 hours a day. Couldn’t care less about ascended rings but if I wanted a couple I would have them already too.

Optional content, no one is forcing you, don’t like it don’t do it, yadda yadda yadda. Copy/Paste from the other half billion posts on this subject.
I always avoid the Borderlands for the same very reason, maps are utterly bad designed and unbalanced, that’s why we have three of them, because they couldn’t come with a good balance for the three maps. (Or at least that’s my theory and I’m sticking with it).
Eternal Battlegrounds on the other hand is a beautifully crafted map, but only because it’s too asymmetric(things might be spaced out here and there, but this is a very asymmetric map), and you can’ t go wrong with that.
Not this again!
Hey Anet, why don’t you just remove WvW all together?!
You’d be getting pve in pvp…
Unlike now that WvW is an exclusive PvP area. /rolleyes
Anyway, the idea sounds SUPER fun!
Now that I know that everyone hates it so much I will wear it even more.
I use the full set on my Asura and I love how it looks, don’t really care what everyone else thinks.
Yeah, I’m sure they don’ t either, I mean, is not like they built the whole system from the ground up. The most probably copy/pasted it from somewhere.
Nah, that would break the 4th wall even more.
Its been just 2 weeks after reset, tiers still need some adjustments, stop being so impatience.
WvW is a massive battleground, that, shockingly, needs to involve a massive amount of people, or zergs. If you want to fight against less people join sPvP
“Go to Lion’s Arch during any given day, and you can see a dozen “commanders” roaming all over the place….yet you NEVER see them on the battlefield nor leading anyone…”
Hard to take this thread seriously when you don’t know how the game works. The Commander icon is not exclusive to WvW, hence, why the price of it is gold since it’s the only common currency, other than Karma, between WvW and PvE.
If someone ever tells me to F-off an area because I killed something I would kill every frikking beast and animal on that area until my eyes bleed.
How many posts like this we have a day? 100?
1. WvW is PvE with PvP thrown in, or the other way, both work.
2. World completion is optional, if you have issues with the way it’s set up, then don’t do it.Don’t get me wrong, I don’t mind them being in WvWvW, hell I enjoy WvWvW. However having to rely on others to help you complete something is where the problem for me lies.
Sure leave the points in. Place them in dangerous places close to keeps/enemy spawn zones etc….. That I don’t mind. Just don’t make me rely on others to get something.

A simple question:
Is it possible to level strictly via WvWvW? Did anyone do it? What were the biggest drawbacks?
I suspect leveling via PvE would be faster, but unless leveling via WvWvW is like 5x slower, I don’t care much. :-)
Yes it’s possible and WAY faster than with PvE. I leveled my Warrior this way from lvl 2 to 80 in around a week and a couple days. If your server zergs a lot you will be fine, just hide inside the zerg until level 30, or so and cap lots of towers/camps. After that keep doing the same, but now you can go to the front lines and survive for a bit longer.
The key to level up this way is zerging/capping.
PS: Use karma/experience boosters, when I reached lvl80 I had like 500karma.
How about letting people play their game the way they want it? If they want to spend their whole afternoon at the JP who are you to say no?
There are about 15 topic about this every day.
1. Commander icon is NOT exclusive for WvW, it has plenty of other uses on PvE too.
2. Costs gold because that is the only common currency (well, before laurels anyway) between pvp and wvw
3. Yes, the title needs rework, and they have announced a couple of the things they plan to do. Give them time, this game is only around 6 months old.
4. If you still have issues with it, well, tough luck.
Has it occurred to you that game development is far more complicated than any other type of software development out there? Also, no company that I have ever worked for has delivered software on time. Not a single one.
Can you imagine, for a second, how the working conditions of GW2 developers is and has been for the past 6 months? Think about that before whining about waiting a couple weeks for free content.
Go get another gear from another dungeon
Right now I have Arah, CoF and building up TA
Buying a commander badge is fine. I like the thought that if I got it into my head I could save 100g and have the blue dot and I didn’t have to have a huge guild or huge time-sink or whatever other word for “grind” you want to use. (And yes, I actively WvW.)
A rather simple fix would be to allow players to turn on/off individual Commander badges for their client (as well as letting the Commander do so for broadcast). You love Commander A, keep their badge on. Commander B couldn’t lead their way out of a paper sack? Turn em off.
Or you could just mouse over them on the map and ignore the useless ones. Just like now.
See, here lays the problem. When I see a commander icon on WvW I see a person that loved WvW so much that wanted to spend either his time or money, or he was able to get his guild to help him get it. The end result was the same, he/she is trying to make a difference in a positive way.
But most people see it as “OMG THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS!! HOW DARE HIM HAVE AN ICON AND I DONT! THE SYSTEM MUST BE BROKEN!!1!!!1!1!11”
All I see here is failure to communicate. If someone is harrasing you, explain to that person what you’re doing, or intend to do, if he keeps on harrasing the /ignore. If you are already on Vent and have a team effort going on having a pin become useless at that point, and it’s your prerogative to turn it off. If you fail to do so then you need to communicate to the map what you intend to do.
I hear what you are saying but it’s easy to fix. Every couple of days I see someone getting flamed in /map because they have the pin up in a jumping puzzle or killing centaurs or farming mats instead of “leading”. I remember one time I kept having to tell people we had the pin up for a guild event that I just turned it off…. I was spending to much time explaining instead of playing. Or I see people asking guild commanders to turn off their pins as it’s causing confusion and nasty comments start flying.
Anything that prevents drama or harassment is good in my books. Most MMO’s that I’ve played the last decade had some kind of multi-grouping system or raid frame that you could flag “private”.
If having a system to turn of the commander icon, reduce drama and harassment while still allowing guilds to use all the benefits of the commander/squad system…. how is that a bad thing?
Sometimes some commanders deserve that abuse. Yesterday when I logged in we were in the process of losing Durios to Yak, I saw a commander so I was checking the map to see his movement, and oddly enough, he was at Durios even tho we lost it. Apparently he died at the door and was waiting to be ressed so he could portal everyone in and retake the tower. It was a nice plan, until Yak started attacking Brovost, QL and Dan simultaneously. They took all towers except Langor and the dude was still there waiting to be ressed, on top of that he was blaming me for drawing the zerg away from him.
Anyway, I do agree that the system could use some improvements, and I’m sure several things will change with the next patch.
You guys just want to get rid of the randoms… Tell the truth and stop hidding behind well structured texts…
To be honest, not everything can be done with randoms, no matter how much you try to communicate. Capping a few towers, camps, even SMC might be alright, but things are somewhat different on the Borderlands and might require more advanced tactics that can only work with team cohesion.
But at that point you either belong to a full WvW guild that communicates through either Skype, vent, ts or whatever and having an icon becomes rather… useless.
It doesn’t cause confusion at all, well, only of you are OCD and need to be on all places at all times. Different commanders might have different objectives, once you map in, listen for team/map chat for a while and select who you want to fight with. Is not that hard or complicated. When commanders work together having all the icons on screen is beneficial for the server as a whole to know whats going on by just looking at the map.
If you don’t want to see that many icons, then join a squad, problem solved. The current system works just fine.
The problems I’ve seen is people with commander pins up being harassed for not “leading properly” or “why are you doing that?” comments. Some people are using the commander pins for their multiple guild groups and are not actually trying to lead the zone. Or you get so many pins up that people are spread all over the place following different commanders or pulling players from those commanders that are effectively leading.
Let me give you an example:
A few times our multiple guild groups would take a camp (usually astral) and ambush those enemies coming to take it. We’d hit them on the way, let them engage the camp and then hit them… it was what our guild enjoyed. But when you try that with the commander pin up (to coordinate our 2-3 guild groups) the random people follow you. So while our guild groups are staying out of site for an ambush, random players who were following our pin, are running around killing mobs, gathering and jumping up and down on the road. It effectively prevented us from doing what we enjoyed.
We always use Ventrilo when running with multiple guild groups, but it’s much more effective running with Ventrilo AND having a visual commander pin up. So most of the time we end up not using the commander pin, simply because it causes confusion. So we have the best in game system for coordinating multiple guild groups…. and we don’t use it.
Allowing a /private option to the commander pin fixes that. Absoultely no one sees the commander pin in the zone except for those people you’ve invited to the squad. I would think it should be fairly easy to implement with the current system.
I certianly disagree that the system is working fine… not when see guild commanders being harrassed for having pins up and not “leading” properly.
I’m not a guild commander, im a pug commander because the guild I belong to doesn’t have a strong WvW presence, so I have to rely on pugs to to what I think is right. And so far it has worked just fine. Whenever I need assistance capping a camp or tower I turn it on, ask for help on map, and once done turn it off until it’s needed again. No one, unless zerging, needs to have the pin on at all times, unless, you know, you need to inflate your ego.
A few things:
very awesome post
AMEN!
But this posts makes too much sense for some people to understand. Cause, you know, they know more about the game than the people who designed it.
It doesn’t cause confusion at all, well, only of you are OCD and need to be on all places at all times. i know, the point is it shouldnt be visible outside there guild/group
i know a few commanders who bought commander just to badge farm/karma farm for epics without caring about the game at all.
Agree 100% again! Having a commander pin doesn’t mean someone wants to lead the whole zone. It sometimes means they want to help organize their guild or friends to be more effective in doing what they enjoy. The problem arises when to many pins appear and distract people from following those commanders that DO want to lead.
They need a /private option for commanders pin so that just people currently in the squad can see the pin. This is the easiest way to allow the commander system to be used for all playstyles and situations.
People currently in a squad can already see only that one pin…, the biggest issue is that almost no one joins a squad.
