Belliegerence and Vulgar Language

Having reread the thread, I see a few different things:

  • Some players, like me, only rarely see extreme instances of offensive behavior.
  • Some players don’t see issues at all.
  • Some feel they see them daily and have modified their game experiences to avoid such instances.
  • Some say “Buck up and ignore it.”
  • Others say, “I have a god-given right to offend you, and you have no right to complain.”

End of the day, why don’t we let the professionals decide? Why don’t each of you who see offensive chat report it and let the moderation team make a decision about the overall offensiveness of a word or phrase in the context of the game. The team is not draconian, they understand the difference between a word spoken in the heat of the moment and a pattern of abusive language. Report and forget and trust that things will be taken care of in the best and more fair manner possible.

See, the thing is, most of this doesn’t happen on map chat, at least from what I’ve seen. I’ve seen everything that everyone is saying, but usually in whisper, mail or in PUG parties. I’ve also seen it SW maps (not so much the other maps).

Also, I’ll just add that sometimes reporting, etc adds fuel to the fire. Whereas I can ignore anything, some people take these things hard, and I mean real hard. I know of specifically one instance of harassment in game that has been reported numerous times by numerous people, and Anet honestly hasn’t done much except an occasional suspension. It begs the question (not just in gw2, but in any game) if the report function actually works.

And now to contradict myself, Anet actually has some of the best customer service and report systems I’ve ever seen in a game. So there’s comfort in that I suppose.

My advice is to ignore it, but I’ve come to realize that some people, for whatever reason, just can’t do that, and are really affected by it. I’ve never understood it, but my best advice is to try to ignore.

Taimi is okay, but I admit, Kasmeer x Marjory definitely needs to be axed. It’s badly done to the point where I’d say it’s unnecessary.
Braham… his relationship with Taimi is interesting, but other than that I don’t like him much. I don’t mind an “all brawn no brain party member though”.
Rox is… yeah no, if she died off I’d be okay without her.
Kasmeer is an okay party member, but her romance and story is crap.
Marjory, I liked at first, but not so much now.

Disclaimer: I did not play during season 1, so I never got to actually “meet them”.

Uhmmm for those of you who are confused, you just CTRL + Mouse number 2 on the skill you want to autoclick.

If that is all you are doing, then do you also actively hit an attack key with your finger to get the auto-attack started? This seems like an acceptable waste of your time. Feel free to wait until you hear your character taking damage from some spawning mob before manually starting your auto-attack.

I do not know how your client works but my characters do not attack unless they are targeting and they do not target a mob or auto attack without my interaction. Only pets will automatically respond to aggro with no user interaction. Perhaps that is what you meant.

No I did not mean autoclick, I meant auto attack. Try what I just said on an aoe move, like Ranger’s torch 5 as the person above me suggests.

This is an interesting topic.

I do not think auto-attacking is the problem but rather the targeting without active participation.

Being able to AFK and continuously kill/harvest stuff for loot is not an intended feature and can be interpreted as a breach of terms and conditions. If you take a break from the game without moving into a non-combat safe location, you should reasonably expect to receive little more than broken armor for the lack of effort.

Yet, you can put a skill that doesn’t require a target on auto attack. This may not have been intended, but surely they realized that this was going to happen. Precautions should have been made to let it be known that it is considered an exploit, or simply make it so that only skills that require a target can be put on AA( like skill 1).

Gaile Gray has been explicit about this before: if you can walk away from the keyboard and get caught, they will ban your account.

It doesn’t matter what we, the players call this. ANet considers it a breach of the Terms of Service.

Could you show me where she has said that? I haven’t seen it anywhere in Terms…

Some of ANet’s official responses were posts here (in the forums) that have since been removed, so I hope you’ll be ok with posts that quoted the original.

For example, this post quotes this policy clarification , which includes a list of questions you should ask when determining whether something is ok or not. One of the questions is:

Does this program allow someone to ‘play’ when he/she is not at the computer?

Similarly, GW2 Guru has a copy of the original text.

Some will be compelled to say, “buh buh, if I’m alt-tabbed, I’m still at the computer” and “buh, buh, buh, if I’m reading a book, I’m still at the computer”. And they are welcome to take that pedantic approach to the English language. I don’t think it will get them very far.

Put another way, I don’t think that the “terms of service” could reasonably be explicit about all of the likely conceivable player actions (never mind some unlikely ones). I neither expect the ToS is going to spell out predictable reactions by ANet staff.

Or in less theoretical terms, I don’t want to be in a situation in which I have to be arguing with ANet about whether my behavior violated the letter or the spirit of their guidelines. I prefer to maximize the time I’m playing the game, rather than risk the possibility that I have to spend time arguing about how the game is meant to be played.

I agree with that last part, I’m not gonna do it because it IS a grey area, and they CAN ban me for it. However, I am not simply using pedantic English language to overcome something illegal. My question was simply because it is a game function and it is simply being used. I find it strange that using a game mechanic is “not allowed” more or less, but I accept it, even though I disagree. So I’ll state again, I would not do it, the risk is too great, it however does not make sense, especially since there is no clear cut rule against it, and it is also a feature of the game.

You won’t get banned for afk and farming at the sametime as long as you are not running a bot program.

You read through the thread? Many people saying the opposite (even with examples, threads from banned players, and dev comments)

I am pretty sure devs said it wasn’t bannable unless I missed the comment somewhere.

Essentially, if they suspect you are botting, then you are. According to them that is.

Same thing applies.AP will garner rewards, thus it’s the same.

If you need to try and figure out loopholes it’s most likely not ok.

I’m not trying to figure out loopholes, but honestly, I don’t see how it could be an exploit, bot, or anything like that, in any shape or form. I guess I’ll just do it the painful way then

It is not an exploit or a loophole. There is no rules against farming ambients for the achieve. As long as you are personally doing it, it’s fine with ANet.

But from what I’ve read of the terms, setting AA and Alt+Tabbing, is not “wrong” so to speak. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not deadset that I won’t get banned if I do, because I won’t do it, but I’m just saying, logically speaking it doesn’t make sense that it is, especially since I haven’t seen it explicitly in their Terms.

However, if you put a skill that doesn’t require a target on auto cast or you leave a pet out with the intention of farming something while AFK, that has been considered botting in the past.

Essentiall that… auto attack using a skill that doesn’t require targetting.

NaotsuguLH.8915

EDIT: Whenever I say botting, also think of it as “exploit”
So my guildmates and I were having a riveting discussion, and these 3 instances came up with everyone having different views, but I’d kind of like to know if there is an official ruling on it:

1. Leaving auto attack on, and ALT+Tab and do something else (browse FB, or whatever)
2. Leaving auto attack on, and read a book (while still at the computer, with GW2 running)
3. Leaving auto attack on, GW2 up, and going to shower, or do some other thing of the sort.

Is it botting? From what I know, is that botting requires a third party software to play for you, but in this instance you are just using the game mechanics.

At the end of the day my curiousity was not satisfied, so I had to ask.

Note: I admit I am guilty of number 2 lol, though I would still type in guild chat. So I was technically still there.

Scaling Mechanics

As to the dead bodies specifically: “Events can detect that players have not performed any actions relating to the event within a period of time and will scale down the event accordingly.”

“Within a period of time”. But some events are less than 5 mins, like Silverwastes’ Breach and VW. Most likely the event will fail before the scaling down occurs.

How do the scaling mechanics work exactly? I’d prefer an answer from Anet, because I’m anticipating several different answers from players, such as “amount of people scale the event”, "only “active” players scale the event; dead people don’t", and “only those who land a hit scale the event”.

The reason you couldn’t find a PvE condition build is because condition builds are absolutely awful in PvE unless you’re soloing a dungeon. Your build is particularly bad because it’s a maim build that doesn’t have DE, which doesn’t work even a little bit.

If you’d like to use a maim/condition build in PvP, there are several discussions about those on these forums, along with quite a few builds in the build list for them. If you’d like to use a condition build in PvE, don’t.

so how would you restructure it for PvP/WvW?

Also, do you think I should do a different build for PvE? I know condi isn’t great in PvE, but it’s a bit worse than I thought it would be. I’m determined to make a condi mesmer though.

I want to make the tempered backpack, but I don’t exactly have a lot of watchwork sprocket things (though I do have the watchwork mining pickaxe), so forging isn’t the most viable, especially since I need 500 to make the mechanism to make the gift of blade, and I need 50 sprockets to make roughly 13 shards (everytime I used the forge method I got 13 shards (only used it 3 times). Currently only at the first blade pack.

Not particularly. I usually account for the fact of waking up at around 7AM to be able to go to both Tequatl and Wurm, which is fairly early for most. You can still get into the Wurm map at around 8:30AM, but it’ll fill up quickly as they’re dividing up into 3 teams.

It seems to me that GW2 is your first game ever. I have played several games, and by far it is easiest to lvl up in GW2. Also there are various methods to do it. In most games it’s just kill monsters for experience to level. Which is very slow might I add. The only time I’ve had to “grind” is this weekend during the double exp, however, I mapped for a large part of it, and then did EoTM for the rest. Needless to say, it was not “a boring grind”. I had fun. You don’t have to grind for legendaries. You can take your time ,accumulating progress as you go. I know someone who has almost all the mats for a legendary without buying any, or intentionally trying to get them.
