Pistol 1, Bleed, and Pierce

Pierce makes the bullet, well, pierce the target it hits, which mean it keeps going and can keep hitting whatever is behind, potentially exploding and causing an AoE on each foe it pierces through.

As for the bleed, as far as I know only the target directly hit has the bleed applied, not the ones hit by AoE.

My charr chose the Order of Whispers because I like their premise and the NPC that recruited me was the coolest. Now I regret it because I really want that Vigil medium coat :x

dual sigil of earth

in Engineer

I’ve personally tested it, and it’s a waste. The proc effect only comes from the main hand, not the off hand.

That’s not true. Procs from sigils can come both from main and off hand, even if you only use the mainhand weapons skills, this has been thoroughly tested and I can confirm it from my own experience.

I also heard that when you equip two sigils of earth they both work but they have a shared internal cooldown, so the gain is minimal (i.e. you have a higher chance to apply bleed but they will never both proc at the same time). Haven’t tested this one myself though.

The real problem here is invisible enemies. Give their algorithms time to match servers properly.

Mh no, that wont fit. a 3D position is determined by the values X,Y,Z

If we declare s truct which holds this 3 values, using plain integers for positions(depending on the engine, floats/doubles are used), we need 4 byte per value.

So we need 12 Bytes for 1 position, 10updates a second = 120 bytes raw data. This implies a simple movement system, which sends the absolute position over the network, so the client calculates speed and direction between current and new position of the other player by itself.

But this still has overshooting, rubbbanding and other possible quirks and doesnt work well with fast direction changes of other players, as a players action isnt as regular as the updates

Usually it is the speed and acceleration that get sent (or even just the acceleration) and the client calculates the position based on that and the player input (he knows the starting position), but anyway, I thought you meant only 1 update per second, that’s where my prediction came from.

And this is calculated with just 1KByte of upstream per player. If its more(which is very likely), multiply the calculated data above.

Actually it should be less than 1KB because with so many actors you only want to send the input changes, make the logic completely deterministic and simulate everything separately on each client. My quick prediction is 64-128 bytes
But of course that’s just updates, when you already have the starting information about all the other players, but you have to first get them from the server when you first see them, and that could be much much more data.
It is also very unlikely that a game like this would use TCP because, as you mentioned, it has a lot of overhead and is pretty slow, most developers come up with their own protocols.
Other than that, great writeup, good to see someone so well informed

Seafarer's Rest v Arborstone v Riverside

Does this mean that Seafarer’s Rest is now one of the second three servers? Or did both Riverside and Arborstone lose terribly last week?

One way or the other, how are the contested areas shaping up now?

Random small fights while roaming have to be what I like the most about WvW when playing my engineer. Winning a 1v2 battle is super satisfying and pistol/shield gives me pretty good survivability. Not to mention the permaswiftness from speedy kits, I can’t imagine having to play without it

Rocket Boots

in Engineer

Posted by: Netsu.3769

Netsu.3769

Rocket kick is one of our best toolbelt skills and the main reason I use the boots. I just blind the guy with pistol skill 3, kick him in the face and roll backward leaving a bomb at his feet.

I recently found out that rocket boot are brilliant for bosses that pull you in and do massive damage. Usually there’s at least half a second between the pull and the attack, more than enough to just rocketboot so safety. Everyone else on the team who is not quick enough to dodge the pull dies, except for me, even if I fail to dodge I still escape. And the cooldown is so low.

One thing that bothers me in rocket boots is that you can’t aim it if you’re immobilized. If I’m running away from things and someone immobilizes me, the only choice I have is to rocket boots straight back into the group I was running away in the first place.

Engineer Pistol.

The AoE on #1 is probably useless in WvW or PvP but it can be extremely good in specific portions of PvE with the piercing bullets trait. When you get 6 or more mobs clumping together in a tight place every pistol auto-attack hits all of them 6 times. This could easily mean 1500 damage to all of them, plus all the bleeds. Sadly the only places I took advantage of this was specific parts of the story and dungeons (gravelings and undead usually swarm like that around melee characters and NPCs).

I would definitely want the bleed to go back to 4s, but would I give up the AoE for it… not sure.

My opinion: the Black Citadel is so bad to explore.

Rata Sum was harder to explore for me and finding the right vendor/station in the Grove is just terrible. Once you realise you have to come really close to the circular doors in the imperator’s core to enter an instance Black Citadel is quite easy.

A More Integrated Website

Netsu.3769

I don’t feel such a strong need for a social network site, but being able to fill your forum profile some more would really help.
Having avatars (or character pictures as profiles) really makes any forum feel better, it’s also much easier to recognize members from their avatars than from their user names. I actually find it pretty hard to read the topics here without any avatars.
Having information like server or guild name show up below your user name would also be a great addition. Country of residence, age and gender are all nice optional information that improve the community feeling.
Right now the forum feels very bare-bones, more like a mailing list.

How to become "Centurion of the Blood Legion and Warmaster of the vigil"?

in Charr

Posted by: Netsu.3769

Netsu.3769

One character can only unlock one banner, Vigil, Priory or Whispers, once you commit your character to one of the orders you can’t join any others.

Displayable titles are a different thing, and there are plenty that aren’t pvp, wvw or HoM related, there’s for example a title for 1000 revives (combat healer) a title for 100% world completion (been there, done that) a title for most coins banked (golden, I think you need to bank 1000g) a title for collecting racial armour, for collecting miniatures… the list goes on, I don’t remember all of them.
Just go into the achievement tab in your hero window, every achievement that has a crown instead of a coin at the end of the progress bar is a displayable title.

Charr and Trenchcoats/Skirts

in Charr

Netsu.3769

Yeah it bothers me too, but the ‘rascal’ set coat looks more or less like a long coat should on a Charr, not like a skirt. I suggest you check it out if didn’t already.

Other nice sets are the racial tier 1 medium (no skirt and shows some fur, pretty cool) and the ‘leather’ set coat which is much shorter than most coats, so it might suit you (I prefer the rascal one).

I attached a screenshot of my rascal coat/gloves + commando shoulder pads, my favourite combo so far

Charr Cubs - A little confused

in Lore

Posted by: Netsu.3769

Netsu.3769

I don’t think the fiction perfectly lines up with what’s presented in game. In particular the fiction seems to imply that cubs have little contact with their parents, but that doesn’t always seem to be the case.

Well, as far as I know the fiction doesn’t say that it’s ALWAYS the case. There could be exceptions, and if someone lives outside of Charr lands then even if he wanted to rise his cub in a fahrar there just could be none around.
Not to mention that (as others said) if a Charr leaves his homelands he probably doesn’t want to follow the Charr family lifestyle anyway.
The cubs raised the traditional way don’t have much contact with their parents from what I’ve seen.

Charr Cubs - A little confused

in Lore

Posted by: Netsu.3769

Netsu.3769

I guess Leyha and her parents live outside the legions (which probably makes them gladiums), that’s why she would have to ‘join’ one in the first place, normally cubs are born into a legion.
As to whether the Ash Legion would take her in… maybe they make exceptions, maybe it’s just a kid’s dream.

Necromancy - why am I allowed to raise undead

in Lore

I think one of the NPC necromancers, when summoning his minions, says something along the lines of “do not worry, my servants are free of Zhaitan’s corruption”. So I guess summoning undead is cool unless you use them for evil.
