Oh. Well, how about that.

I’d say I feel foolish for not knowing the workaround and then ranting about it, but nobody else on the map knew how to fix it either. I’ll be sure to pass along the wisdom.

Hotfixes and Bugged Structural Upgrades

in WvW

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

I’m a little heated, but I’ll try to stay objective.

Upgrade bugs happen enough. Sometimes we have to give the workers a kick in the pants. And that’s how gaming goes sometimes. Find your workarounds and move on.

Patches are known to reset upgrades in progress. I find this to be a bit silly as this is supposed to be a 24hr war, but technicalities happen. Maybe one day we won’t have to put up with this.

Tonight the patch went into effect and it bugged garrison and a northern tower on Crystal Desert’s BL (homeland). This is a match we’re struggling in, but the map was mostly painted and we thought to bunker down. Nope. Can’t get anywhere with these upgrades. I could buy NPCs, but do nothing with the structural upgrades. It kept saying that we couldn’t queue structural upgrades while one is in progress, but nothing was actually progressing.

Morale plummets when the homeland falls apart, and now it looks like the only way to clear the bug is to let garrison and a northern tower flip and start over again.

We spent gold on upgrades before the patch only to have our efforts wiped, and now we have to burn morale to put ourselves in a defensible position. We’re already trying to rally troops who are disenchanted by a matchup we can’t win, and this is just the icing on the cake.

Please stop rushing content so we don’t have to deal with hotfixes that are mucking up the WvW scene.

Just when I think these forums have debated every conceivable aspect of GW2, I come across this thread about the behavior of snow on carrots. Hehe.

Is crafting the fastest way to level?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

Crafting used to give 10 levels for going from 1 – 400. Then ascended crafting was released and now you only get 7 levels for getting to 400 (even for jewelcrafting/cooking).

If you do all 8 professions, you’ll gain 56 levels.

Cooking is by far the least expensive (all of my alts get cooking for a level boost). Artificing is also often cheaper than other crafting professions.

Fewer Content Releases, Please.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

We’ve been enjoying new content every other week, a true milestone for MMOs. As a player who arrived on the scene shortly after the game was released, I didn’t pay much attention to the Living Story releases when they came out (was Flame and Frost the first?) When I finally did get into the Living Story, I realized it was a quick achievement grind that may or may not have lasting consequences. Permanent rewards (nodes in the home instance) are something, but most of the missed rewards are inconsequential.

There’s no doubt that ANet developers are very savvy. We’ve seen what they are capable with a two week deadline, and I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. Instead of rapid releasing disposable content, I would be much more excited about fewer patches that are more substantive.

Once a month, maybe?

I’m not at a computer where I can test this, but a quick Google search brought up a thread from 7 months ago: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Screenshots-destination-folder

It doesn’t seem too cumbersome. Here’s the solution given from that thread:

Assuming, Windows Vista or higher:

Open your screenshot folder, it’s located in “Documents/Guild Wars 2/Screens/”. Cut and paste (move) the “Screens” folder to a new location of your choosing. The original Screens folder in the Guild Wars 2 folder should be gone after doing this.

Copy down the path of both folder locations, you’ll need this later. Example:

Old: C:\Users\You\Documents\Guild Wars 2\Screens
New: C:\Guild Wars 2\Screens

Open the command prompt as an administrator. Type cmd in the start menu search, right click cmd.exe and select run as administrator.

In the command prompt, type the following command, substituting your folder locations (right click the command window to paste):

mklink /J “C:\Users\You\Documents\Guild Wars 2\Screens” “C:\Guild Wars 2\Screens”

Good luck!

Wait to craft or craft while leveling?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

I’ve crafted levels on all my characters (alts more heavily than my first character). I don’t feel like I missed out on the journey with my first character in doing this as I only did two professions (at the time, it gave 10 levels per profession. Now it only gives 7 if you go up to 400). This helped fill the gaps when my personal story was to far above my level. The only regret I have in doing this (especially on the alts that got 30 – 40 levels by crafting) is that I missed out on opening up zones. So I had to go back for a lot of map completion.

So far as learning combat goes, I found that jumping into sPvP matches really pushed me to learn my character much better than PvE content did.

Welcome to the game!

Leveling can be a little slow at the start as you don’t have all your weapon skills, utilities, or traits unlocked just yet. Instead of grinding through mobs (as the exp gain, like you said, is slow) keep an eye out for events that happen on the map; they give good exp for completing them plus exp for killing the mobs involved.

As you’re a human, your starting area is Queensdale. This is a very active starting zone, so ask around in map chat (using “/m <message>” without the quotes) if you need.

And for an overview of how events work in game, here is the wiki page: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Events

Hi arem!

I’m an administrator for the Crystal Desert forums (http://crystal-desert.com/). I spend a bit of time trying to keep up with the guilds on the server for a few reasons, one of which is to chime in with recommendations. Here are a few guilds that might fit what you’re looking for.

Veteran’s of the Mists [redt]
Guild Leaders: blueblog.1726 and Herd.2764
Website: http://www.reddit.com/r/redditgw2/
Everytime I come across a [redt] player in game, it is always a positive experience. They’ve got hustle and heart, and are PvX with a PvE focus.
EDIT: Looks like [redt] is alliancing/merging with [KA] to keep an active roster. Either way, the guild leaders listed here should be able to explain all that if you chat with them.

We Came To Dance [WCTD]
Guild Leaders: Air.6452 and Mattrimcauth
Very active in game and very upbeat crew. After all, it’s a group of Dancers! Also PvX, focused in WvW.

Chillin Like a Villian [CLAV]
Guild Leaders: Juz Chillin and Tanya Aotearoa
Website: http://chillinlikeavillain.enjin.com/
Large guild that covers most all timezones. The leadership supports their guild members in a way that is rare to come by. A true PvX guild.

So far as meeting up with other CDers, 6 or 7 of us from [SoH] are headed for PAX East in April. It’s a bit of a trek from Portland, but if you have tickets already, that would be a great meetup spot.

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

I’m getting Bifrost for my Mesmer as well. (Well, someday. I play way too much WvW to get all the required mats :P)

Staff on a mesmer is a condition based weapon, and it has great defense. The bonus is that staff clones are the only clones that can do damage since they are applying conditions to your enemy and inherit your condition damage and duration.

Truth be told, I’m finding myself using a condition based build less and less these days, so staff hasn’t been in my build for a bit. Still, many builds still incorporate it, so it’s just a playstyle preference for me at the moment. And with the balance patch coming tomorrow, who knows what I’ll be running as next.

Pick-ups will share in the frustration that your friends expressed when it comes to certain content (especially dungeons). Still, that’s a bit narrow-minded in my opinion, so I avoid gaming with those types of players

Leveling a Mesmer is dirty work, but the class is well worth it at level 80. (Things get a lot easier at level 40 on Mesmer.) I haven’t taken a Ranger to 80, but I have a few friends that love the class, and they’re very effective with it. Rangers are about so much more than bows and arrows.

Either way, follow your bliss. It’s much more rewarding to play a class that you enjoy versus one that you’re pressured into. (And with the constant balance changes, every class has it’s ups and downs.)

Dying a lot in Dungeons

Sounds like you aren’t max level yet by your statement of joining groups with higher level players. Being level 80 in a dungeon makes a big difference in survivability. So that’s one consideration.

Also, I highly recommend forming guild groups (or joining a guild that enjoys dungeon runs). Getting everyone into VoIP and running with players that know you are learning makes a huge difference, and they’ll be able to give you pointers. Once you get the dungeon mechanics down, you’ll find you’re on your feet a lot more often.

Good luck!

Help me! Thief or Engineer?

in Players Helping Players

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

Engineers can stack stealth 12 – 15 seconds, but it takes a bomb kit and sometimes a little luck. Smoke Bomb for the smoke field and 5 blast finishers (Engineers have a ridiculous number of blast finishers).

This doesn’t work out so well in combat because you’ll usually hit an enemy while blasting and get the Revealed debuff, but it is useful to get through tricky spots when you can blow up the smoke field then make a run for it.

At any rate, I find Engineer to be much more interesting and engaging, but I’ve never taken a Thief to level 80, so I’m missing some perspective on this opinion.

Mesmer Commanders

in Mesmer

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

UrMom is right. When commanding pick-ups, there are certain things I just can’t do. Portal and Veil tricks are difficult if I don’t have a lot of people in VoIP. Running with a guilded group is much easier though as we’re all in VoIP and attentive.

At any rate, I’m not a terribly proficient commander, so sometimes I become overwhelmed by trying to juggle strategizing, combat, and communication. Most Mesmer builds require very active gameplay, and in trying to coordinate some of these stunts, I often lose out on watching the map and anticipating enemy movement.

For guild raids, we often assign an Ele and a Mesmer to the commander so s/he knows that certain tools are available at all times. (When you need a water field or a veil, you often need it on a moment’s notice.)

Sounds like the non-Ranger was a bit whiny. Pets are an integral part of the Ranger class and shouldn’t have been removed from the fight. The Ranger was handicapped in this tie breaker. (I can see the concern for stat differences due to the naked fight, but you can’t just separate a boy and his dog!)

Bringing in your best 1v1 build is great for tournaments. In the case of a draw, it might worthwhile to allow 15 minutes for a respec. This way the combatants can tailor a build specifically to take out the class they are facing. The participants already demonstrated that they are equals by reaching a draw. Now it’s time to demonstrate how intimately you know your class and the other class to see who comes out on top.

For a while I saw Mesmers running around with Lyssa Runes and Mass Invis. It made for a great get away if you are ever stuck in a pinch. It also pairs well with Sharper Images because of the +10% condition duration and increased precision.

WXP Booster BTA?

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Oh dear. I think everyone missed the point of Septemptus’ question. If the WXP boosters stay soulbound, then he’ll have to bring characters he doesn’t want to play in WvW to get any use out of them. If they are account bound, then he can move them over to the four he does want to play.

Either way, I haven’t seen any news on this. Based on nothing at all, I wouldn’t be surprised if they remained soulbound.

The changes mean that WXP points are a pool from which you can locate the points to which character you please.

Every character benefits from the same rank. This pool doesn’t “dry up” because you spent all the points on your main.

How to Party and be Safe

in Mesmer

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

Mesmers, it’s time we had a talk.

As you grow up, you’re going to notice your character is going through some changes. You’ll develop traits you never knew you had, and there will be skills you never thought to try. And once you start getting more comfortable with your newly found talents, you’re going to experience the urge to party. Don’t worry. This is perfectly normal.

I’m not here to tell you to abstain from partying. Quite the contrary; partying can be a very enjoyable experience between consenting players. It’s important to go in prepared, though. You need to have a conversation with your team to make sure everyone is comfortable. After all, there’s nothing more awkward than having one player blast your fire field while another is trying to give you a cleansing burst.

Developing synergy in your party is going to ensure you can slide into home base effortlessly. You want to make sure there is adequate access to condition removal (burning is not a desirable party outcome), and protect yourself by reflecting missiles that are trying to impregnate you. Talk with your party members about what your goals are, what you need to get the job done, and make sure everyone knows their role in that.

An example of this came up earlier when I posted my Mighty Jackpot Build that almost perfectly mirrored skcamow’s Chillruption variation. The difference is that skcamow’s build focuses on locking down enemies by chilling them where my build stacks might to share with the party. If I’m partying with two guardians who are each packing a staff though, I might find myself sitting in the corner instead of contributing to the fight. At that point, I’d be better off using skcamow’s build since might is covered.

As a Mesmer, we have a plethora of builds that can perform all kinds of tricks on the field. Fortunately, Fay has compiled a list of Mesmer builds and guides. Using this, you can increase your repertoire in the dungeon and be effective in any situation.

Just remember, communication is key to any party, and having a conversation before things get going hot and heavy will make for a rewarding experience.

Happy partying.

(The 5 seconds of 5 might from Bountiful Interruption wasn’t long enough to stack and share, which is why I bumped it up to 10 seconds.)

Never thought the choice of runes and sigils could completely change what we bring to party composition.

mesmer clones

in Mesmer

Posted by: Nikked.7365

Nikked.7365

I had the exact same reaction to clones when I first started playing Mesmer. They have a learning curve.

A little nomenclature:
Clones are the exact copies of yourself. They do insignificant damage and die pretty fast.
Phantasms are the ghostly copies of yourself. They do remarkable damage but have cooldowns for their attacks.
Illusion is the term used for both clones and phantasms.
(Once you start exploring the traits, this terminology helps as some traits affect clones, some traits affect phantasms, and some traits affect both.)

For the sake of simplicity, clones are mostly shatter fodder. (They have other purposes, but it requires a few traits and advance tactics.) Sometimes they will grab a mobs attention and sacrifice themselves for you, but you really want to blow them up. Mind Wrack (#1 shatter) is your damage shatter, and Distortion (#4) is your “Get me out of here!” shatter. Diversion (#3) is best used when you see a mob telegraphing a skill that you want to interrupt.

If you have multiple Phantasms up, you don’t want to shatter them. Their cooldowns can be long, but they’re worthwhile and will add a good amount of DPS for you.

At any rate, leveling a Mesmer can be difficult as the learning curve is rather steep and we are very much trait dependent. The mesmer you thought you knew at level 1 is a completely different character at level 80.

[Build] The Mighty Jackpot - WvW Zergplay

in Mesmer

(I couldn’t get the spoiler tag to work with lists, so the playstyle is in this post, and all the nitty gritty traits/gear setup is in the second post)

I think I’ve worked out all the kinks in this build, but I know there is no better place to get a build critiqued than on these forums. Thanks for any insight you can add!

Unfortunately my computer can’t handle videos, so I can’t provide those.

Playstyle

Interruptions and Combat
This is an interruption based build that focuses on maintaining steady damage and stacking boons to share with your party. Mesmer skills often have an RNG element to them, and interruptions are no different here. Fortunately, in zerg play, there are enough targets that you can expect to see a few interruptions regularly. Your aoe interrupt skills are GS#5 and Focus#4.

When you interrupt an enemy, they will receive immobilize, 3 stacks of vulnerability, and a random condition (blind/chilled/cripple). You receive 5 stacks of might and a random boon. If you are focusing a single target, use GS#2 followed immediately by Shatter#3. This will inflict 8 stacks of vulnerability, plus more if the daze also interrupts them.

Mitigating Stability
The hard counter to this build is stability. Use Null Field offensively when charging into combat to start stripping boons in case the enemy has stacked stability. If that doesn’t get the job done, use GS#3 to remove another boon from attackers.

Might Stacking
With the Sigils of Battle on both weapon sets, you’ll gain 3 stacks of might for 39 seconds every time you swap weapons. As the battle rages, this will allow you to maintain 12 stacks of might if you swap weapons regularly. Add in 5 stacks of might for each interruption, and you can reliably maintain 20 stacks of might, more if your interrupts hit several targets. If you interrupt five targets at once, you’ve hit the jackpot and now have 25 stacks of might.

Sharing Boons
Before using your Signet of Inspiration, be sure to make use of the Sword#3/Focus#4 combo to stack retaliation. The combo will proc twice (once for sending out your iLeap, and once for swapping with the clone) and results in 19.5 seconds of retaliation. Once you have might, retaliation, and all the other boons you are picking up along the way, share them with your party. Once you have shared boons, throw in a Timewarp to speed up everyone you just stacked might on.

Boon Duration
Boon Duration only applies to boons that you are generating. Receiving boons from other party members relies on their boon duration. Giving boons to other party members uses yours. (For example, everyone who runs over your Temporal Curtain receives the increased swiftness amount from your boon duration)

Signet of Inspiration does not use boon duration. It simply shares the boons you have at however many seconds are remaining

Focus Usage
Perma-swiftness is built in with boon duration and a traited focus. You receive 23 sec of swiftness from Temporal Curtain, which has a 20 sec cooldown. Also, be sure to hug your iWarden when he is up. He’ll reflect projectiles for you and also give you regeneration so long as he is alive. Regeneration will also grant you protection due to the minor trait.

Have a Thief in your party?
Prismatic Understanding + Shadow Refuge + Boon Duration = 30 seconds of protection and regen (or some combination of the two, since it’s random). Shadow Refuge doesn’t come up often in Zergplay, but if you and your thief buddy are well coordinated, you can use the refuge while traveling and share all that protection when charging into battle. All you have to do is swap out Chaotic Interruption for Prismatic Understanding and you’re good to go.

Pfft. I’m the guy that loves bringing noobs along. I play to win, but I’ve got something of a carebear in me, and helping people get through their first few runs makes me happy. So the leaderboard does nothing for me, but hopefully I’ll see one of my mentees on it

Does this mean I cannot use another character to gain a level 21-30 chest if I had done so for a previous character? What will happen to those who purposely levelled an alt so they can chance at 2 daily chest of the same fractal level?

Fractal level is becoming an account attribute instead of a character attribute. So, that probably prompted the daily chest being restricted by account.

Holy Hannah. I can’t remember who’s on first, what’s on second, or how CDBL garrison is still standing, but both servers gave us a fight. I may have been swearing a lot in TS and developed heart palpitations as it happened, but it was a hard-earned victory for us.

Thanks for bringing it. Hope you all got some baggies too

(Sorry. I suck at forum drama. I’ll have to work on that.)

HELP -- The Invisible Inspiration

The build is a bit scattered. I can see where you’ve put your trait points, which is a great start, but I can’t figure out your weapon sets/sigils, armor stats/runes, etc. When writing a build, players are often well aware of their options. Build writers need to pick things out that synergize. Otherwise it’s just a guide. Consider using http://en.gw2skills.net/editor/ to fill in all the blanks.

So far as the traits are concerned, it feels a little haphazard. You emphasize boon duration (which is great with 30 pts into Chaos), but you’re lacking somewhat in terms of boon generation. Chaos Storm will apply boons (with your +duration) to your allies directly, but the boons from Prismatic Understanding can be shared only once every 36 seconds. To pass off beefy stacks of boons, considering taking Chaos VIII and get those interrupts in.

Inspiration XI and Chaos IV don’t really synergize well. With all the conditions flying around out there, you’ll have to shatter often if this and Arcane Thievery are your only condition cleanses. Lots of shattering with low clone generation (no Dueling X or any points into Illusion) is going to make your Chaos IV unuseful. Since you want mantras, drop 10 points from Inspiration and take Mantra of Resolve.

Even with those changes, there’s still a bit of honing to do. Instead of trying to make a one-size fits all build, consider making variations for WvW and PvE. For example, in PvE, a traited focus can be very useful where it’s more optional in WvW. Check out: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/professions/mesmer/Guide-Where-and-When-to-Reflect

We have always been known for running from even fights. Yes.

It’s OK. I run from even fights too. Perhaps we could find a support group to go to? Ya know, one where I wait until you’re looking the other way and then sucker punch you. And then you stab me in the back while I’m busy gloating about it.

Unbalanced Heal Skill

Well, I’m excited for the skill. And I’m hopeful it makes its way into WvW. I can see where it probably won’t be in sPvP though, similar to how racial skills are inaccessible there.

Out of the conditions listed there, krait currently only apply poison. So, the LS update will probably include monsters with these conditions (especially the new toxin). If not, then it makes sense for Antitoxin Spray to end up in WvW to balance out some of the condition meta.

Just my wishful little dream.

Hi Hannah! Just as a quick note, this is a WvW recruitment forum, so you might not get a big response here (especially since you are cross server).

Pop over to https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/guilds/recruitment and put the post up there. Good luck building your guild!
