Remake GW1 a good idea or what?

Ninth Requiem.3250

I’d give it a day before everyone complains that there’s nothing to do once you hit level 20, that Obsidian armor takes too much grinding the same areas, and they NEED stat progression otherwise it’ll die …

The reason we’ve seen that in GW2 is because once you hit 80 and have your exotics (which doesn’t take long) there is no further way to progress.

In GW1 hitting level 20 was effectively the tutorial. You still had hundreds of skills to obtain and ‘perfect’ stats to farm for. You still had hours and hours of missions and quests (you hit the cap about 30% of the way through the story). You also had a huge variety of viable builds to experiment with and have FUN with. With the later addition of the title system players had even more to work towards.

Unfortunately ANet gutted all of these progression systems in GW2. You generally unlock all your skills before the cap now, all equipment is automatically max stat for its level range/rarity, each profession is forced into one of very few builds, and titles might as well not exist.

They basically removed the elements that gave GW1 its longevity.

Could be, though there was never much difficulty getting max stat weapons (just those with max stat, a good skin, and req 9, till SF).
I was thinking it’s more likely some of the people who have flocked in and want a game changed to fit what they’re used to.
“You can go out and hunt for elite skills”
“Yeah, but most suck. I have the one that the internet says I need.”

The world of Tyria is vast, and you cannot be a true explorer if you have not visited all of it, even the battlefields!

To help you, change your server to one that owns that PoI, get your 100%, then change back after a week.

Except WvW doesn’t take place in Tyria. So … yeah. Why it counts towards world completion I have no idea.

I feel your pain OP – I’m in a similar situation. Hoping we’ll drop brackets so we can actually take things. I’d rather not change worlds, because of guild stuff.

New Ascended Items Stats ( Healing Power )

Ninth Requiem.3250

Hi

I just checked the stats of the Ascender Rings

http://www.gw2db.com/items/trinkets

And i have a question to arena.net if they can answer me, is this all the ascended rings what we can get ?

To me the lack of different stats is huge, a lot of them have critic damage, a lot but, neither have Healing Power how principal or secondary stat, the only one is the “all stat in one”

http://www.gw2db.com/items/71368-solaria-circle-of-the-sun

Seriusly, a lot of new rings and neither one with healing power to a support character ? I only have to change my exotic rings for the resistance of Agony ? because i prefer my old Healing Power, Power, Thoughtness rings with my Guaridan.

I expect if arena.net can anser if there are more hidden rings or put mor stats because the lack of Ascender rings to support character is overhelming.

I think that’s all of them.
Annoying; that’s a stat I’d like too. Doubly annoying is all the ones with duplicate stats…

Wait … Plinx was fun? Have I missed something?
For me, it was the most tediously repetitive grind imaginable following one guy around spamming auto-attack to get a few hits in before things died.
Sure, you get decent rewards, which was why people did it, but it was not even slightly fun.

Money and Karma gain = fun.

Put it this way. Before I begun my Plinx journey I was level 80 with rare weapons and armor. Masterwork trinkets. All basic power precision crap.

After I worked the magic Plinx really was, I had a full exotic mf set with rare trinkets and sigils of luck in exotic weapons. I have 2 set have pvp gear all exotics. Several different weapon sets all exotics. All exotic trinkets.

Not to metion several stacks of ori, mith, dusts, ancient bones, enough hard and regular leathers to supply darkhaven, silk and goss. In top if that almost 100 ectos and 50+ gold.

This may seem like nothing to some people. But the last few weeks I have been so into gw its insane. All becuz farminf this event has allowed me to get gear I would have nevrr gotten.

I have a son, wife and dog. Full time job with mandatory weekends. A harley and a truck with monthly payments. My only hobby is MMOs. Farming Plinx may seem annoying to some but not to me. Im sad to see it go.

So it’s not the event itself that’s fun, but the reward? That makes more sense – was wondering what was so attractive about that particular event.

Thing is, that one event chain was spewing out better reward per time than anything else in the whole game, and it was doing so with no challenge at all.

I understand that you don’t want to feel you can’t compete in terms of gear just because you have less time, and that’s fine, but as someone who probably plays more than you do (Around 4 hours most evenings during the week, plus more on weekend), I’ve ended up with less money than you because I’d prefer some challenge and difficulty rather than joining with a huge cluster to mindlessly insta-stomp on anything that happens to spawn.
An imbalance like that was needing a fixed to keep things fair.

[SPOILERS] The Sylvari are not minions

Ninth Requiem.3250

We actually aren’t sure if the other dragons can corrupt the sylvari or not. We currently know that the sylvari believe that they cannot be corrupted and that the sylvari have not been turned into risen, icebrood or branded. However, as is stated/hinted at relatively often, we really don’t know enough about the sylvari yet to know for certain if they’re somehow immune. See my comparison to the quaggans.

On the subject of the Quaggan, they lived both in the far north and the south. There’s quaggan fleeing south from Jormag (See the Quaggan racial story for one example) as well as those fleeing north from the DSD. The corrupted quaggan aren’t really an ancestral thing, they’re fairly recent.
What I mean is that of the minions we encounter, at least most are new to this cycle, with the only exceptions seeming to be the dragon champions.

Ninth Requiem.3250

The OP is absolutely right, bags of wonderous goods will not fix dungeons, but is that what their intention is in the first place? The way I see it is this was put in for the people that are not fortunate enough to finish the dungeon so they don’t have to walk away with nothing but a terrible feeling. If you remember each boss used to drop 10 then 15 at the end for a total of 45. They switched it to just 60 at the end and nothing during. Now its 3+3+3+60 for 69 per full run or a lesser amount depending on how far you get. How is this a bad thing, they give you something for failure and they even give you a small cut of karma rewards for failure. For those of us who are not failures we just got more rewards.

Pretty much this.
I enjoyed dungeons before the change. This has only improved matters.
On top of that, there’s the “unique stat distribution” weapons, and remember that dungeons have a good number of Champion mobs – I’m assuming these will have the same loot table improvement as in the rest of the world

You missed the biggest piece of evidence that the PT isn’t related to an elder dragon : Malyck comes from another Tree; therefore a) the PT cannot be the dragon itself, since the dragons are unique, and b) the other tree lacks a Tablet, and therefore can’t have been “freed”, and yet Malyck opposes the dragons.

On the subject on Malyck, it’s not confirmed that his tree even has a dream. It could be specific to the Pale Tree.

The idea that the Nightmare is a result of dragon effects is an interesting one. It would explain why the Inquest have Husks (Another creation the Court has, but the PT lacks) in CoE.
On the other hand, this doesn’t explain why only 1 dragon could corrupt the Sylvari where all others cannot.

If you think of it this way: You go to the grocery store to get oranges since they are on sale 50% off. When you arrive, you find 1 person has bought the entire 50lbs of oranges and in their rush they dropped 15% of them on the floor. They then turn around to sell them to you at the full price. How would you react?

That’s a terrible analogy, as it assumes you’d get them in the same time were it not for that person.
The reason sell orders exist is to get them now, whereas for buy orders you’d have to wait. In this case, someone’s done the waiting part for you.
It’s more like: you want oranges, but don’t want to go to the store, so you get someone to bring you oranges, paying more than they did.

You mean, do I want to keep repeating over and over when I hit the agony threshold, hoping to get the random ascended gear drops?

To get to the higher levels in order to need the equipment you need to run the dungeon, which will give you that gear. You can’t magically appear in a higher level than you belong unless you run with a party where the majority are above you.

I don’t understand what you are saying.

Say there is some level X at which Agony mitigation is necessary. Say I have run up to X depth, and been on the unlucky end of the probability distribution and not gotten what I need to complete level X (or, I suppose, be too much of a drag on my team).

I have to keep repeating X-1 until I get lucky with the drop. For that, I’ll need to find players of less than X depth to play with instead. I’ll have to keep repeating until I do.

Here’s the thing about drops, if the chance is 5%, that doesn’t mean you’ll get it in 20 runs. You may get it the first time, you may get it the 100th. Most people will get it in approximately 20, but the probability curve tails out in each direction.

Maybe there are tokens for runs. Great, why not just call them keys then, and once you have enough keys, you unlock the next higher difficulty…

Also, think about it – how many different Fractals do you think they’ll release? 6, 8, maybe 10 at the most I’d guess. Not sure on the combinatorics, but a rough calculation suggests even with 10 you’ve got a 1 in 3 chance of seeing one of the fractals you got in the first run in the second.

This all seems very grindy to me.

I’m concerned about this too. Thing is, you couldn’t repeat X-1, since you’ve finished it. If you hit X, and can’t do it without Ascended gear, you’ll need to repeatedly try X (and fail) till some drops.
Or option 2 would be to find someone with a low highest-level, and use them to let you repeat the easier sections hoping for a drop.
Bear in mind that these are more powerful than exotics, and are meant for long-term gear progression – they can’t be all that common, otherwise they lose their entire point.

On top of that, you can take people less than level 80. If they get Ascended drops, are they scaled to the character level (in which case would mean they’re worse than exotics by the time you level up)?

There’s 9 fractals btw. Not sure how many bi-level bosses there are. Grindiness all depends on how big the fractals are – if large enough, then this could be considered as grindy as 3 separate dungeons, if small enough it could be like repeating a single path on 1 dungeon.

Now Fissure of Woe and Underworld, that was proper stuff, tactical, doable, always fun, even with a pug.

They weren’t originally – I remember early in GW1, it was rare to join a FoW pug and finish even the first quest. UW pugs did even worse, with wipes happening on the first fight. People were pretty bad back then, and yes, some people called them impossible.

And while much much later on we had PvE skills to help, even much before that we learned how to clear it with no problems. The areas weren’t nerfed, we just got better.

Grats!

In my experience, I’ve enjoyed dungeons more by changing things around.
My first set was TA, and just ground that place into dust – got around half the tokens before it got upgraded to 60 per run. I think mine was probably spread out over a lot longer period than yours; didn’t feel quite as oppressive as yours seems to have been for you, and definitely didn’t do 3 runs every single day. However, now that I do have it, I never want to see that place again.
Since then I’ve just been mixing things up, hitting whatever dungeon is suggested. I’ve finished an AC set, am about two thirds through HotW and a few pieces through CoE (I have a lot of alts … ) and things are much better. I’ve also been changing which char I use, and changing between different builds, and still actively enjoy dungeoning.

Interestingly, while most of my runs lately have been with pugs, I’ve not had problems with rage quitters/resets/idiots. I’m pretty surprised about this, and put it mostly down to luck. Then again, I have yet to do Arah Explorable, so that could be it.

I don’t get it really. I know this isn’t Guild Wars 1, but at least in Guild Wars 1 you could farm for some of coolest skins and best stats in the game… that never grew old. This game, you are farming 2-3 lame areas for WEEKS on end to get one item. That’s not fun.

I understand “Legendary” is supposed to be the end all be all —- ooooohhh, watch me salivate over it —- ooooohhhh watch me swing it —- yada yada, meh. But seriously, 90% of the player base is going to say “No thanks.” There’s no fun it.

Not to mention, we are talking about ONE legendary. Every player in the game has TWO hands. The guys running off and getting greatswords, staves, and bows — good for you. The rest of us who like daggers, or pistols, or warhorns — we gotta farm two. No thanks.

Not to mention, some of us like playing more than ONE character. In Guild Wars, I had all the professions maxed and skills unlocked. I had fun doing that. I got my green items and my rare mini-pets… the game never got old.

THIS IS GOING TO GET OLD QUICK. It’s 10 times the farm-fest of Guild Wars.

Now, I know what you’re all saying – “No one is forcing you to get a Legendary Weapon… (in my best sarcastic tone).” You’re right, no one is. But I could reach Guild Wars end game content, max my toons, and enjoy all the updates and holiday events without resorting to the JOKE of 250 hours of farming in the same place every night. I could finish my Sorrow’s Furnace collection with my friends and have fun doing it. I could play with my builds and 1-man or 2-man Sorrow’s Furnance.

I can’t do squat here but mop up Plinx’s oil spills, night after night after night after night after night after night.

This model WON’T work in the long haul.

Have you forgotten GW1’s Obsidian armor?
I got GW1 very shortly after release, and managed an obsidian set late in Factions – basically it took me around a year and a half, only getting the materials in 2 zones (later 3), and needing a team of 8 people to do it.
If you think it’s too much, then don’t go for it.

While I have no desire to start working on a legendary for a long time, I am (very slowly) working towards the Foefire hammer, which takes a huge pile of charged lodestones. I’m happy with it being a crazy slow process of lucky CoE runs with some Forge combining.

Getting Exotics?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Ninth Requiem.3250

Truth is, the easiest way is probably blending various options, depending on what appearance you’re after (if you’re planning on transmuting, blending is better, otherwise you may end up with an odd mismatch).

I went down the dungeon route – with AC, TA, CoF or HotW you can easily and quickly get a pile of tokens. CoE is also an option, albeit slightly longer and more reliant on a better group). Out of my 5 exo sets, 3 are dungeons, 1 is part dungeon-part crafted, and 1 is crafted.
You are, however, somewhat limited in how often you can run each; in terms of play time this is a quick method, but actual number of days may be longer – it really depends on how many hours per day you have (Mitigated ofc if you’re not focused on a single set).

Will more powerful gear make you play more?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Ninth Requiem.3250

Ninth Requiem.3250

I won’t be playing more, I’ll probably be totally ignoring them. I’ll do some of the new dungeon to see what it’s like, but I play for appearance, not stats; the ring can’t be seen and the back piece is ugly, so no thanks.
I’m still working on dungeon sets for various alts; I really don’t care if there’s anything more powerful. One of my chars had a rare/masterwork mix at level 80 till I got dungeon pieces to replace them.

If the time comes when I need Ascended for new content, I’ll play much less. Till then, I’m just going to despise Ascended items and anything associated with them.

There wasn’t a gap in stats till you bumped up Legendaries.
I don’t care what your goal is – you’ve created a treadmill. It’s a precedent – what happens when everyone who complained about lack of progression reaches Ascended? You do know they’ll complain again, right? And this time they’ll expect you to do something about it.

LOL, no that wont keep the players happy, i want my character to feel like he is getting stronger…..that is what an mmo is about right? or just grinding all day to play dress up is for you?

Worked fine for GW1. For a very long time. Once you hit max level, and get max gear, it’s about you learning to play better – about being stronger with what you have instead of requiring larger numbers and the same level of skill.

I feel the same as the OP – I’ve never before felt that Anet have let me down before. The lack of gear treadmill was something they seemed adamant to keep out of GW2, and that was a huge selling point for me. Suddenly though, that’s mysteriously vanished because a vocal minority demanded something that wasn’t ever part of the game, needing that carrot on a stick instead of improving themselves.

“thank you very much for your feedback!”

However we all know that you are just trying to dust the whole situation under the carpet as to speak..

You think that a couple of days into the patch we will all just forget and get on with the game and be happy.

Well to the devs… We DO NOT forget!

you should have taken heed of SWTOR and how they interacted with their community. If you haven’t forgotten the community is the thing that keeps a MMO from going down or staying good.

Lock this.. infract me all you want.

At the end of the day if i wanted to play a gear progression game i would go back and play wow as it does it a lot better.

Thank you for your time.

Given the current time, there’s no way a dev would be available to comment yet.
On top of that, they’d need to discuss changes, work out what can be done to alleviate issues/concerns, collate that into a plan, and then work that into something that can actually be released onto the forums.
All they can do at the moment is thank us for feedback; I’m assuming that given the vast quantity of very similar posts across many topics, there’s no way they’ll just ignore it.

Having an instant-reply that later is invalidated is way worse than a simple “We’ll get back to you when we have something solid”

You do know that you can’t clear the new dungeon right? It’s infinite. Each level consists of 3 mini-dungeons chosen from a pool of 9 (with a boss every 2 levels), and you don’t need infusion till much later on. You can see all the content without touching infusion.

That’s not how it reads. Yes, we can’t really “clear” the dungeon but we can see and beat all mobs that can spawn in it. And, as they clearly stated, to do so we will need Ascended Gear. And that’s where they kittened it up.

I just assumed that because it’s a different selection of mini-dungeons each time you try it, with a random boss at even-numbered levels, you’d be able to see everything even if you only replayed the first two levels enough times. And naturally the starting levels can’t require Ascended.
I might have missed something on the later level generation though …

OMG PPL
its not better buy “3 precision”. Its better buy 8%. Its a lot.
Second if they intruduce ascended armors = armors get more defense. New weapons = more weapon damage. Better stats are making those difference even higher.

Its like rare vs exotic. Only a moron can tell that there is no difference at all.

Currently players are able to complete ALL content in the game without using Exotics. Exotics just make life slightly easier. This is not the definition of a requirement, it is the definition of player choice. This will be the same.

edit: regards to outside the dungeon that is. Inside of the dungeon, stats will be meaningless as we’re all going to be in different gear anyway, just with 1 or 2 items the same, at the start.

Read the blog post: You won’t be able to clear the new dungeon unless you have Ascended Gear.

In addition: No mechanic needs better gear, everything you can think of can be done with exotics, we don’t need higher stats to make new mechanics work. Higher stats only allow higher numbers, that’s all.

You do know that you can’t clear the new dungeon right? It’s infinite. Each level consists of 3 mini-dungeons chosen from a pool of 9 (with a boss every 2 levels), and you don’t need infusion till much later on. You can see all the content without touching infusion.

They originally had this in GW1 with TotPK (later HA) victory allowing access to UW/FoW/DoA. They eventually removed it, and it was much better with it gone.

Also; there’s a new PvP map in this update, so …

I didn’t play LotRO; that’s interesting reading.

Didn’t Guild Wars 1 have a gate stat that prevented players from advancing into the final parts of Prophecies.

Yes. Yes, they did. And it was fine.

In GW1, it wasn’t a stat. It was just an effect placed onto the weapons. Unless you were fighting Mursaat, it did absolutely nothing.
If this only applied in the new dungeon, I’d be fine with it. If Ascended items were Exotics with an infusion slot, I’d not complain. But this will affect all other content.

Get ascended items; now all content is ever so slightly easier. GW1 never had that.

Well, I was waiting till we had more information before getting annoyed.
Now I’m very very annoyed.
This new tier has torn the heart out of GW2, replacing it with an unwanted mess that’s interchangable with any other MMO.

Why would they possibly think this was a good idea? The majority were happy with what was there already – it’s why many of us chose this game over other options.
The vocal minority who wanted gear progression should have been told to shut up and deal with it, just like they were in GW1. And those people STILL won’t be satisfied as they’re after a bigger gap than they have.

Thanks for rewarding all our support by ruining everything.

Let's Talk: Burst Abilities

I think swapping 100b with arcing has a great deal of merit. Atm, GS is very much an easy-to-use but worthless if countered weapon. By making 100b an adrenal skill, it could be better balanced to allow this to be a more flexible option, as well as motivating people to be more skillful as opposed to the “GW1 Assassin” builds that effectively let people push buttons in a pre-set order without thinking, and get kills against targets that aren’t prepared. Zsymon’s incorrect in that it would change things in PvP – you’d need to build adrenaline before using it, so it can’t be part of your opening gambit, and as such would drastically change the GS (for the better imo).

Forceful shot does differ from Kill shot in that you can move while activating it. Even though it’s UW (with everything that comes with that), it’s still a better option because self-rooting on-land makes you extremely vulnerable, both in PvP and even more so in PvE.

Combustible shot doesn’t really bother me being an exclusive PvE/WvW skill, as the longbow is basically an exclusive PvE/WvW weapon. Making it PvP viable wouldn’t help a great deal, because you’d still have to get round the fact that the weapon skills still wouldn’t be.

I agree with you on Earthshaker – it’s a great skill that takes planning and forethought, plus works well as requiring you to weigh using it early on vs getting more levels.

Sylvari Race evolved from Thorn Stalkers?

The seed Ronan found for the pale tree was in a cave filled with stalkers, so the possibility of them being at least somewhat related is there.
Wouldn’t really say “evolved from” exactly, but there’s likely some connection.

Best way to turn excess Karma into cash?

Not so much making money, but you can save yourself some money by getting gathering tools and fine salvage kits using karma rather than cash.

CoE Path 2.. in my opinion.

I love CoE – think it’s my favourite dungeon.
As others have said, at first it’s a nightmare of repeated deaths and tears, but after a couple more runs it became much easier – my last run had zero combat deaths in the whole group (a couple of laser-grid deaths though).
Path 2’s Alpha isn’t as easy as path 1, but the same ideas apply.

I’d be against any change to this dungeon, as playing it has made me improve.

How to make legendary weapon practical but not OP

No thanks.

If you didn’t want to work towards a cosmetic item then you shouldn’t have done so.

Please don’t turn this game into a horrible gear grind, right now it’s easy to get max stats and then fights are decided by who is better.

With this proposal it would come down to who has played the most and farmed their way to legendaries.

There are dozens of MMO’s already where the objective is gear grind for months and months so you can kill everyone else by default – this doesn’t need to be one too.

Not sure how this would give an advantage to legendary-owners.

It’s an out-of-combat stat-swap to stat distributions current available on exotics. You can get the same strength by having multiple exotics and equipping the one you want. As someone who carries around 3 exotic hammers, I can tell you I don’t get any stronger for having more options.
Considering the cost of a legendary, I don’t have any problems with being able to achieve something that could be done with a small fraction of the cost.

Of course, I’m not sure that this is a particularly good use of Anet’s development resources, given the need to make a entirely new stat-swap thing that would only benefit a very small percentage of players.
Although maybe if there was a new transmutation stone that let you “stack” the stats of one weapon into another for out-of-combat selection, that’d work.

What's the story behind the war in the mists?

Ninth Requiem.3250

I’ve only recently started playing so I don’t have an 80 yet. I’d simply like to know what the pretense is behind WvWvW. The “Mists Warrior” NPCs I’ve talked to just made a vague reference to “the cause”. I’m hoping it goes deeper than “those guys are from somewhere else so we kill them”.

There’s not a huge amount of depth to it tbh.
There’s an NPC conversation near the WvW portals in LA that pretty much sums it up – they are trying to invade us, so we need to invade them. The norn thinks of them as evil – paraphrased “You can tell evil, because of how it kills; without reason or mercy” and therefore must be eradicated. Meanwhile the sylvari wonders if they are simply like us and misunderstood.

Would indeed like confirmation that this dungeon stays open for several hours, if not days.

Tweet from Anet :
For those who have asked: Phase 3 will run for a couple of days, so you can all battle the Mad King ^MK

Very yes. Some idea of queue position would be a huge improvement.

I’d like to know if I should just hang around in LA for a few minutes, or actually go out and play some while I wait.

I’d like to know this too – I’m after the staff, and while getting the recipes and halloween materials together is fine, there’s no way I’d be able to get the standard materials and actually craft it till long after the event is ended.

Vanilla (and the lack thereof...)

Ninth Requiem.3250

I’ve had good fortune with it in Metrica and Brisban from the herbs. There’s an advantage there over Maelstom / Sparkfly, as you can use any Master sickles you happen to have (seems to really push up rate).
It’s still far too rare for how many recipes use it though. It’s kind of ridiculous that the most expensive/hard-to-get item in an omnombar isn’t the high-level berry, it’s the low-level vanilla bean.
