I agree with the idea of having a few more WvW maps with some different sized population caps. I would say 3 levels, EB being the highest, whatever the max is they find it can handle without serious lag issues (150 per side is not something we’ve been close to yet imo), borderlands having a cap around what it has been before whatever the bug is people seem to experiencing lately (previous estimates put this cap around 80 team members per side) and a third set of new maps with smaller sized objectives (colonies or islands?!) that are capped around 40 players per side.

Give people a choice and they can get the kind of play they want from it and if lag is a problem for their machine in certain circumstances they have to option to avoid the larger scale battles while still giving those who enjoy them the place to do so. I’d also like to see the WvW population spread out a bit across the servers so while I find the queue bugs annoying, don’t exactly want them fixed without more information on what is going on and why.

WvWvW Queues issue [Merged Threads]

This is a problem because it leads to a lot of pointless superstition and misinformation (see above ^^).

Now players have gotten themselves stuck in the mind set of needing to have a regular queue to feel like their server is competitive when the only times we don’t have to worry about the queue bug (which ANET has said they get lots of reports on but cannot replicate in house so needs more data) is when there are no queues which is why this topic pretty much dropped out of circulation for the last couple of months and is showing up again now that the free transfers shut off caused a massive last minute bandwagon problem. If the Feb WvW patch does 1/2 of what they’ve promised get ready for more QQ queue threads because there are going to be a lot of frustrated players.

For now, pretty much everyone on JQ knows if you don’t get in after 30 minutes you should re-log and try again. It is also a lot easier and less buggy to jump between WvW maps so avoid the wait when possible and queue up for the map you want to play on from one that does not have one. Whatever the issue is, I find it annoying with my limited playtime but not annoying enough to leave the WvW community we’ve been building on Jade Quarry since beta.

I would say it is time to put the breaks on the JQ recruitment myself. We don’t need queues on all maps most prime-times to have fun or be a competitive server, especially if other top servers are lagging behind in coverage.

All the respect in the world to our recruitment officers Rawnoodles and Stei, you guys have done an awesome job bringing a lot of great guilds over. More at this point might be a tiny bit of overkill. I would rather have some hard fought bloodbaths out there everynite as per our usual MO.

I agree with the wish for the EU/US server split to be tossed aside which could result in maybe one bottom tier being eliminated but paid transfers needed to happen sooner rather than later (or never) for the overall long term health of the game. Those lamenting the fact that they can no longer jump ship on a whim to see if the “feel” of another home might suit them better have had plenty of time to do just that and realize it is a lot more about perception and their reaction to adversity. Games and online communities are what you make of them and do take a bit of effort.

Granted ANET has not yet built into the game the proper incentives for community building and loyalty but I am hopeful they have some goodies in the works yet even if they do not, I know from DAoC and the giant disaster that was clustering that the game will be better off for years to come for the choices they are making now. We can argue some about the best way to go about closing down free transfers but there is nothing out there that would convince me it should not be done A.S.A.P.

The whole queue system being screwed up and a game-able crap shoot has been known about for quite sometime. Your observances were rather common during the first month after release and there are a bunch of old threads you could sift through if you wanted to add to the data set.

ANET could not seem to reproduce the problems we were reporting on their end so they just waited for the population to spread out and stabilize instead of fixing it, granted, they’ve been very busy fixing other issues. People don’t complain about the stupid messed up queue system anymore because queues are rare, not because anything has been done to improve it. Another reason to keep the populations balanced instead of stacked at the top, this game in its current state cannot support waiting to get to the fun bits.

I think you guys might be jumping the gun slightly on misinterpreting what ANET is planning in the way of progression by equating it with things you’ve already seen (i.e. Realm Rank). Pretty sure is going to be vastly different a lot more mellow than most of you are thinking. This observation is based on a few years of watching people over reacting to every little shred of WvW news released prior to launch and seeing all the misconceptions people still had about it after the BWE’s.

Do agree that the world communities really need to get on the ball for the long term now that free transfers will be shut down soon and get ourselves a bit spread out. In the NA bracket we’ve gotten way too stacked in the top 4 and it is just getting more so everyday since current interest in WvW is down. I don’t want to go thru the release queue nightmare again. Let’s take the next couple of months to rebuild our communities based on the themes we originally intended and sort ourselves out before the shut off so it is not such a big mess watching the ladder settle back down again.

- How many players can one map contain?

As many as we can fit without causing too much stress on the servers. We can’t be more specific than that, but I can assure everyone that the cap is definitely split equally between all three worlds.

I understand and respect all the reasons you cannot share the exact numbers but I am very curious if those caps are as dynamic (and changeable on the fly) as the world population limits? Or are the WvW map population numbers only changed by hard patches? Have you been tweaking the WvW caps based on performance since launch and are they currently set lower or higher now than when the game began and lower or higher than your original target? I believe with the current culling issues and less intense interest in WvW the map population caps should be kept low but I am wondering how things will be on full servers come February when everyone and their uncle comes bouncing back to check out the changes. Maybe being in Hawaii for 2 weeks in Feb means I wont be missing much after all if we are headed back into queue city.

And speaking of world population caps, as a numbers junkie, I would love to know anything about where those caps are currently sitting and have been that you are allowed to share. Again, thinking ahead to the coming patches and distant future when transfers are closed down, I am very interested in seeing more of those types of graphs showing server population dynamics over time. The shifts in world dominance on the WvW ladder has been very fascinating to watch and I am quite envious of you guys and your real time glob tracking abilities. You must learn some incredible details that way which I am sure is keeping some joyous interns very busy trying to make sense out of.

Thank you both Mike and Habib for taking the extra time to provide a lot of interesting details. I know a lot of questions are ones you’ve seen over and over again and may have thought have been clearly answered before but it rarely hurts to repeat yourself and your fans love hearing from you. Very excited to see what you guys have in store of us next!

Bring Back Dolyak Farming

I think this is the perfect example of the “right” sort of thread to necro. It was discussed before and the issue has not changed or been resolved so there is no harm in continuing the discussion and we know that WvW changes are in the works so even if some improvements in this area where not originally considered, now would be a good time to brainstorm some solutions.

Not a lot has changed in the last 2 months since this was originally brought up but there are a lot fewer players out in WvW lately and I am sure there are some commanders who would just rather have bodies on the map with the potential to get things moving than nothing at all. If bots went back to their farming ways so quickly I think they would actually find themselves getting farmed by bored enemies as bot killing is almost as good of a sport as yak hunting. Anything that rewards more defense play would be a boost for WvW and commanders who are begging for supply to get where it is needed. The karma flip trains running rampant can be almost as damaging to morale and the score as a herd of yak protectors.

ANET could also use turning back on yak escorts rewards as a way to test out their bot detection sniffers packets or as a trap to ban some more bots. It would give them an obvious place to police. To be honest, I don’t think there are really that much bot driven activity still going on out there but I am usually rather naive about that sort of thing as it has never been something I could get my head around.

I love the idea of making Dolyak escorts reward badges but I am not sure how feasible that would be considering they can’t even figure out a way to get badges directly into our inventory instead of dropping with the loot. >< I am very hopeful that the Feb WvW make-over includes a new WvW only currency like PvP Glory (Honor anyone?) that a new line of better looking WvW skins and rewards (including fractal like sets) can be purchased with. If that were the case then it would seem very logical to turn yak escorts back on with honor rewards and maybe 1/2 the exp/karma as before to limit the serious over kill reward for effort farming incentive.

I also think it would help add more activities into WvW that casual PvE oriented players could feel useful participating in while their are learning the ropes and earn themselves some rewards. WvW doesn’t need to treat itself so seriously all the time and it would be a lot more fun with a lower barrier entry so more kinds of players give it a try finding elements they enjoy. As a yak hunter myself, I would love to see it be more difficult and challenging to take down those supply routes.

Jade Quarry was the original destination for a lot of small to medium sized DAoC / WAR guilds and tho a lot of them had to transfer off in the early days due to insanely long WvW queues, a large number stayed tight and helped keep our community awesome and RvR minded, maybe with a bit smaller #s these days.

I love seeing comments about how JQ hardly even needs our community TS anymore as we all just know what to do out there and this was bred from necessity of so many smaller guilds doing their own thing but being smart about it. We have a high percentage of players who know what needs to be done without being told and a lot of small groups that can rush out and do it quickly with commanders who have been bred in trial by fire to lead our uniquely built community. /salute

How many people in a map before it's queued?

I would be very surprised if it was more than 80-100 people per server per map.

same, definitely not what they were originally shooting for in the early days of 150+. Lag and culling issues ruled that out right quick in the betas. We did some testing early on and estimated around 60 in the borderland maps which explains all the killer queues we use to suffer through in the first two months. I am still wondering what the server population caps are set to lately. Seems silly to everyone sitting at full when we know the PvE side of things can hold a lot more and they can adjust them on the fly.

I’ve been impressed by server forum attitude and action of Tarnished Coast and Sanctum of Rall from afar since I’ve never gotten to play against them. Of those JQ has battled against (regularly I might add) Stormbluff Isle hands down has some of the most dedicated players out there. /cheers

In spite of all the short attention span insta gratification whining contained within this thread there are also some really great ideas so I suggest people who actually care about WvW maybe stop being so bitter and try to be a touch more realistic with their demands. I know 3.5 months seems like a long time for you younger generation gamers but for those of us who played games like UO, DAoC and EQ for 6 or more years, this is only the beginning and we are here for the long haul.

The only bit of this interview that stuck me a little bothersome was the overly optimistic idea of never needing to plan for game population shrinkage when of course no game can expect to be continually growing in population endlessly without peaks and valleys, especially one that is buy-to-play where population size is likely to be roller coaster for the long term (not there is anything wrong with that). With all their awesome on the fly population tech, they should be planning ahead ways to shrink and grow the worlds as needed for the best experience possible for all players month to month.

The way to effect real change is not to burst into temper tantrums and throw around negativity storms to scare other players away or create a false sense of failure but with positive reinforcement and constructive ideas. I am just going to quote 2 of the larger collections of solid ideas in this thread that WvW devs are likely looking to for their Feb update. I would be excited to see any one of these options added to the game and am looking forward to seeing what they have in store for us come February. Until then, there is still plenty of fun to be had out there in WvW so enjoy and chill a bit.

…an herald, some title/ranks that we can achieve by doing things (killing peeps, taking keep/garrison/tower/supply camp or even doing escort mission with dolyaks)…
Bring back the Orbs, changing the boost they give (like old DAoC relics), take away that crappy altar from up north and place there the Garrison as a Orb Keep, with better guards/door/walls… so taking it (and claiming the Orb) would be a real siege; and make that they works if you have your borderland Orb…
…get my ascended gear through WvWvW instead of doing everyday fractals..

Guild Commander Tags – These are tags only guild members can see. Make them show as a gold icon on the map.

Orbs – These should be keep specific items that are captured, and moved to a keep to strengthen those who fight “inside the keeps”.

Guild buffs placed on claimed keeps – These should be zone wide for the guild.

Reward system: Defense reward system kind of sucks because you constantly see the timer tick to zero, while the enemy is still beating on the gate, and you do not get rewarded. This is the best place to reward PUGs, or give PvE players a reason to leave PvE, and defend keeps/towers thier server owns. To encourage more participation in a defense, a person should be rewarded every single time the defense timer ticks to “zero”, even if the enemy is still beating on the wall/gates.

UI Changes: I think the most important UI change should be putting a place where we store our consumables so we don’t have to open our bags to use them.

Supplies, more importantly supply runs: The 15 supply buff from guilds should be a 20 supply buff “AT” supply camps, and players should be allowed to assist keep/tower workers in thier upgrades, allowing them to run to a supply camp, pick up supplies, and go click on the “structure” being upgraded inside the keep/tower. That alone would solve a lot of problems for guilds trying to do upgrades.

Road Marker “Banners”: These should emit a pulsing buff (600 radius) for 10 seconds of swiftness, instead of the need to click on them for a buff for 20 seconds of swiftness. This would require more to be used, and allow for a better synergy, with use. Also there is a major bug with these that makes them disappear too early.

Warrior I’m seeing fewer, and fewer banners in WvW, probably because they’re tedious. To assist Warriors out, I thik once they pick up a banner, it should put the banner on thier back, or the back of the person carrying the banner. Allowing for them to carry the banner, and utilize their weapon skill set. This is a UI change, basically making “F8” the banners special buff, like Banner of Disc’s “Fury Buff”, and making “F9” the Banners Swiftness buff. This would allow for one Warrior to provide multiple banners to be moved by multiple people in a large scale fight, without losing the weapons they’ve traited for. It would also be cool if the banners represented the guild the Warrior belongs to.

Havoc Squad Servers

You have to find more than 1 server tho, you need 3 paired up regularly to capture that same small man action feeling I think you must be looking for. I say it is still too soon for that in GW2 but that it will come and actually Dec & Jan are probably when you will see start to see small scale more often now that the tiers have settled down a bit and the nightly WvW population is starting to wane. I look at this as a good thing.

A lot of tight small scale focused guilds suffer in Guild Wars 2 because it is less about rolls and sync but more about #s trumping all. With no subs, players do other things so solid regular 5 man teams have a lot more difficulty fielding constant numbers. I would say look for a larger guild of players into the same play style and be more flexible with it. I think that is where GW2 can really shine, once we have a lot more of all different kinds of play styles out there mixing it up every nite.

JQ has a very high percentage of small havoc oriented guilds in WvW which is not always the best thing for the score but makes for quite a lively small scale community out there.

Do you still have server pride?

I love logging into wvw, and just running around with a group murdering all the things, taking whatever targets of opportunity present themselves, camping the jumping puzzles, or just generally playing for personal fun, rather than server victory.

Do you still care if your server wins? Why or why not?

Hey Soul, glad to see you guys are still out there playing somewhere and having fun. Was worried the threatened gear grind had you done with GW2. Just hang on to those badges, relief will be incoming soon enough.

The Jade Quarry Community was formed before release in the BWE’s in order to foster long lasting server pride so for most of us who have remained here through all the turmoil of the WvW ranking roller coaster with free and open transfers fight and die gladly in the name of our homeworld every nite.

So my answer is a resounding YES! I still have server pride and it is not going anywhere but no I don’t know always care if my server wins or not because to me winning is not everything. Win or lose, it is the enjoyment playing gives that matters most to me. I do not tie winning to pride in the least. Back in the beginning when the servers were so lopsided I had the least amount of fun winning in blowouts with spawn campers & queues so I actually prefer where we are today fighting tooth and nail in 3rd place with the outmanned buff.

What Happens If Homeworlds Merge?

ANET can change the server population caps on a whim, there are no truly “full” servers, they just set them that way to keep WvW queues and overflow maps down.

Are there really any worlds that have regular queues for WvW left? It doesn’t seem that way when all 3 of US tier 1 servers complain of having the outmanned buff at times. Have you been an overflow map for any zone other then Lions Arch since September (Lost Shores and events don’t count)? PvE maps on tier 1 servers could use a lot more people around these days so I cannot even begin to imagine how empty the world must feel on less than “full” servers.

Yes, the bottom tier needs to be merged into the next one up. Those were expansion worlds added after release to relieve some of the WvW queue pressure and they served their purpose. The communities should not be destroyed with forced transfers off of a closed world but instead be merged into the tier above to make 6 medium population worlds into 3 full ones (i.e Devona’s Rest, top of tier 9 would be merged with Gates of Madness, bottom of tier 8 ). Yes, it will wreak havoc on the rankings for a few weeks while the dust settles but with free weekly transfers still open things would settle down and people could keep their community in tact or search out more a like minded one as some players on the smaller worlds are there for a reason and like being underpopulated.

This cannot happen until such time and the guild influence transfer issues are straightened out however so hopefully that is on the top of ANET’s list to fix along with some of the more serious glaring WvW bugs.

The right time to stop free transfers ?

before they shut them down for good they need to close out the bottom tier servers. The PvE maps can hold much larger numbers of players even on the full servers (full can be adjusted up a lot as it was for the invite a friend weekend) and it was just the ridiculous low WvW map population caps that required more worlds to be opened up in first place. Now that interest in WvW has settled down it would be a good time to merge up a few worlds for better 24/7 competition and that has to be done before the close down the free transfers.

And what do you propose for all the guilds that have a high population and have taken the time to upgrade their guilds on the low WvW servers? As I understand it, the points earned for a guild is relative to the server they are on. As are the upgrades. If a guild is spread across 2+ servers, they earn points on each of those servers.

If you propose to have ANet transfer all those points to the new servers, the guilds would have to redo the upgrades. Moving the upgrades can be a nightmare if a guild has two guild banks (one on each server). You do understand the database nightmare this would cause. Also, you would essentially have to break up the guild to do the transfers as well (by breaking up, I mean they could end up on multiple servers…. again).

Honestly, if a world does not want to do WvW, that is their choice. Just let the server be, do not propose something just because they do not want to participate in something you like to do. Besides, I have this sudden image of the first BWE weekend… where everyone in the guild I am in was spread across multiple overflows.

Let’s not forget the que up time either. Be honest, how many times have you qued to enter a map, gotten there (after waiting for a long period of time) to find that you need to be on another map, and there is a que for that as well (again, another long period of time). Those PvEers will at some point want to get in there to finish up their mapping, so… now you are wanting to extend that WvW que up time.

In response to OP, I agree, it is time to stop the free world transfers. Or at least lengthen them to 2 or 3 weeks, and lengthen the time over time until Anet is ready to implement the Guesting option.

You are correct, server mergers cannot happen until ANET fixes the guild influence transfer issues which they said they were working on back in early October. And free world transfers cannot end until Guesting is implemented which they’ve been working on since before the game released. You cannot ask them to lock down free server transfers before they’ve found a healthy balance in world population caps that works for all play styles, PvE and WvW. All I am saying is that they have to fix one before the other and of course it ends up being the one they have not had as much time on so hopefully they’ve got those priorities all straightened out now and are on the the right track.

Smallscale WvW Server

I am going to go out on a limb and say very few worlds still have queues for WvW so I would not worry about keeping that one on your wish list. Lots of worlds have small scale orientated players but it does them no good when facing off against other servers running karma farming trains.

Either way, you can still get plenty of good small scale action for little reward if that is your cup of tea with some perseverance (we do it all the time but also get rolled a lot by zergs) and if rewards are a driver just visit the WvW jumping puzzles often enough to get some of both, lots of the best small scale happens in there.

before they shut them down for good they need to close out the bottom tier servers. The PvE maps can hold much larger numbers of players even on the full servers (full can be adjusted up a lot as it was for the invite a friend weekend) and it was just the ridiculous low WvW map population caps that required more worlds to be opened up in first place. Now that interest in WvW has settled down it would be a good time to merge up a few worlds for better 24/7 competition and that has to be done before the close down the free transfers.

Gentleman, how are queues on JQ during prime time? Thank you.

Instant, usually. I like it that way, I tend to pop in and out between work to defend towers/take camps, etc.

Serious question, are there queues at all anymore on any servers?

I would say Jade Quarry hasn’t had any thing in the way of queues worth mentioning since before the Halloween event. It has been very nice indeed being able to jump between maps as needed. I don’t want queues back for sure but I also do not like seeing maps with outmanned buffs in prime time in Tier 1. That just doesn’t bode well for the long term. I hope ANET was serious about tracking the population stuff and will contract and expand servers as necessary. Can’t be any worse for the community than the open free transfers. ><

Stop Selling Commander Title

The Commander Pin is really not the issue, nor is it needed.

I ran battlegroups of over 100 people on a nightly basis for over 6 years on DAOC and you really dont need an icon over your head to keep people organized and accomplish things on the battlefield. What you do need is the ability as a Commander to create multiple chat groups, one for the people who are following you ( not everyone likes or can use vent/ts ) and one for the other commanders from that server with whom you wish to coordinate attacks with ( which i believe the game does not currently have ).

Someone said it earlier, people will follow the leaders that get it done and whom they like running with, people will know the names and they wont need an icon over the leaders head to find them.

Those individuals with Commander pins are not hurting anything!

Did you ever stop to think that maybe one of those individuals with the Commander pin over his head is some 14 year old kid having a blast or someone new to pvp who is trying to learn how to lead. If you are commanding people and you need an icon over your head or others with icons over their heads frustrates you perhaps leading is really not for you!

Looking forward to seeing you leading more often on JQ real soon Kzar and definitely appreciate the way you are getting to know the troops and working from behind the scenes. Commanders that inspire and lead don’t have to have a shiny blue button and ANET has left a lot of the details to individual servers with all the limits on the commander function. This actually might be a good thing because what works within one community might not be the best for another. I still wish there were some other options available for guilds and battlegroup like behaviors but we will have to learn to build our own tools I guess. /slaute

Considering how tight this match up has been all weekend I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the reasonable length of queues in the red & blue borderlands. I don’t even bother to queue up for EB until I am already in a WvW map (it feels like you get way more pops when moving between WvW maps but that might be just because you are not standing around waiting for them to come up) . I saw some queues less than 5 minutes on Sunday evening but I’ve also been learning the best hours in the day to hit limited queues and trying to adjust my playtimes to match up when possible.

Hopefully Mad King craziness doesn’t make this match too lopsided for anyone as it has been really fun thus far. Good work all around! Cheers!

Top 6 WvW Transfer servers?

why do people need to transfer all over the place all the time?

This list needs to show queue times and server time zone weaknesses if it is a serious one that is trying to make 6 to 9 strong 24/7 worlds. I believe Laylyn is working on such a list and has been trying to help servers recruit for the time zones needed. I can’t find the original thread atm but here is a cut & paste section of it from guru . Lets not have any more massive random server transferring if we can help it. Yes it is up to the community to make this stuff happen in a way works well for everyone so lets keep it logical. These lists can be improved with more data.

While I agree with most of what you have said I think you will get a lot of push back on the culling/rendering issue. For my midline machine was actually better before the “fix” last week and now it is worse to the point that PvE is being affected. My lag has also gotten much worse in the couple of weeks. I know other people are still experiencing issues because I can run all the way through enemy zergs (not seeing them till I am in the middle of a sea of red names and yes the red names are about all I see for awhile) and then run out the back side without ever getting hit. It’s becoming a tactic now as a way to escape the unrendering zerg, a whole group can just run right through if no one stops to fight.

There are so many different combinations of hardware out there that ANET probably cannot ever find fixes that will work for everyone but I agree with the sentiment that they are working on these things and improvements are being made so I am not freaked out worried that the game will be unplayble for me forever. They still have more work to do and I am confident they are working very hard on the issue. If significant improvement has not been made by next year I might start to whimper about it but until then I can adapt and be a bit more cautious out there.

I think you left out the orb/undermanned buff complaints in your list but we do know ANET is working on something related to sweeping the map which may or may not involve this issue. It will be interesting to see what they come with and how long it will take but probably at least another month there.

no what you want is for them to drop the EU/US split so all worlds have 24/7 coverage potential. That is really the only solution at this point and even then some will have more than others but at least the things will have a better chance to settle out over time with more worlds in the same competitive bracket.

Just reminding everyone these are the top things that are asked for but of course not necessarily the ones best for the game.

What it does point out is that we do not have enough topics requesting ANET remove the EU/US server divide as this is truly the one simple thing that could probably make a huge impact very quickly. So let’s get busy guys and start some more of those petitions or whatever. WvW is a 24/7 game and the worlds need to be international!

I know alot of the guils on the server are teaming up like always, I’m just saying we shouldn’t quit just because JQ is winning like every other server in every other tier complains about. The points mean something even if we’re not winning.

Good on ya bro, keep up the battle SBI. Fighting for the sake of winning a moment and not a score is where the true joy in WvW lies. JQ had a great rivalry against you guys back in the BWE’s before all the HoD powerhouse nonsense of our more recent match ups.

We can’t wait for ANET to make balanced servers and even match-ups for us so we’ve got to do what we can to make our rules and fun in WvW. I personally wont be logging into any WvW maps when my side dominates the score and when I do try to join WvW I’ll be sure to run around solo and die a lot like I normally do to provide morale boosts for my opponents.

I like your #1. More communication options is always a good thing. I kind of miss having the bugged team chat that you could see on the PvE maps from the BWEs. I also think WvW heralds in Lions Arch should be giving map updates or announcing outmanned buffs. Hopefully some of this better once they get the extended experience app out there. I want to see the WvW map before I queue up or when I am in PvE.

I don’t think #2 is necessary once they get worlds better balanced but that means something needs to be done to address that issue sooner rather than later (and no a blog post telling people you want to them spread out more is not enough).

I think #3 might take too many resources for ANET at this time. Not sure what all goes into their re-match up and patch protocols but I am sure it greatly simplifies things to treat all worlds the same. I’ve seen lots of other possible ways to address this issue that would be less labor intensive on the Devs. Remember, we are not paying a sub for this game tho I expect a lot of us would like to if only for full WvW maintenance staffing.
