The chest, containing Proofs, being account bound is a bug. Earning specializations (skills and traits) is intended to be character progression. Ex: If you want to fully train up your warrior, you actually need to play your warrior for some amount of time.

No offence but that is a theoretical design principle that simply does not translate to desired practice. And I hope you don’t fix the ‘bug’. What does it matter that we transfer chests between characters on a practical level?

It does not translate well into practice in WvW at all. The importance of character progression has always been very highly regarded by ANET in GW2. This has been a long standing design philosophy at ANET that should come as no surprise to anyone here since the WvW playerbase constantly has to fight with them over every little thing, from WXP to commander tags to get account progression any consideration.

Maybe it is time to give up being lumped in with PvE toons for WvW to allow for this design philosophy to break its bad habit of trying to apply itself to places that make less sense. PvP players are the only group that don’t experience these locks into character progression that everyone else has to deal with. I would love my WvW toons to have the same ease of gearing and rewards of PvP ones but would miss my attachment to their personalities developed over time and mix/match stats so it would not be an easy trade off to make.

Might help simplify a lot of ANET’s misunderstanding about why WvWers balk at some of their choices for forcing character progression upon those who are less interested in that layer of development and more just want battle it out with minimum barriers to entry.

The real 4 main issues with the new WvW

Think would be fun to see, is a 4 server match up. add another keep and such to the new BL’s and than maybe more fights..

Even tho there is room for it, I am pretty sure the servers can’t handle any more bodies. WvW lags bad enough as it is. We don’t even know where the map cap sits with the new Desert Borderland atm. I haven’t been on one yet that is capped to even attempt to judge numbers compared to the old Alpine caps, which were estimated between 60 and 90 per side depending where things were in the lag testing department. Would be interesting to hear from a dev what the map cap for Desert is compared to which time period of Alpine since they never deal in hard #’s with us.

I have a feeling the new layout of Desert likely makes it feel more empty than it really is. I am still overwhelmed with everything else there is to do but I hope to have more time this weekend to decide how I really feel about the new map. Right now more than one copy of it seems pretty rough on the lower tiers and I agree with the main points in the OP. Desert Borderland map is beautiful and interesting but for sure could use some polish to play a bit more like an actual WvW map.

Desert Border too large for whose left

This map was much needed when asked for 2 years ago when we had a thriving WvW scene, but with neglect and limited advancements in 3 years the population has dwindled too much to support a map like this as a Borderland.

That’s ANET for you, always a bit behind in reacting to WvW needs like an overflow EotM map long after the game actually needed it. Their development cycle for WvW is such that they are constantly fixing last years problems and new maps take so darned long to put out anyways. I am looking forward to the big WvW patch next year that will fix the problems we had last spring. ><

The new map is very pretty and a lot of work must have gone into it. I am not sure if it would make a very good EB map or not given there isn’t really a central cap point unless the laser could be one. I agree we only need one copy of it in the current WvW landscape but I am not even sure ANET can think that far ahead.

My original hope when the new map was first announced was they would move a version of the EotM map into WvW since it can actually be pretty fun to fight on when not being used as a karma dispenser and have it take the EB central spot with the current EB map (edited version open field instead of SM), Alpine and Desert for Borderlands to have 3 unique flavored maps and players could go to the one that suits their play style tastes instead of mostly their own borderland for defense, the weakest borderland for offense and EB for pure zerging.

new HoT desert borderlands x3, EB & EotM. ANET says they will rotate the Alpine Borderlands back in somehow someday which was left fairly vague. Most assume they hope to design a 3rd borderland map after awhile to have 3 unique maps or 3 possible maps to have 3 copies of. That should only take another year or so.

anyone on T1 using current map population “feeling not full” is being extremely disingenuous and they know it. If a season started tomorrow instead of HoT launch those maps would once again be queud to the max, all be it briefly until match-ups got stale again. The new HoT map will create a different kind of excitement just as briefly and we will get listen to tears of serious WvWers who cannot play their game due to all the PvXers hogging spots in the queue. Game culture has to change if you want those full maps to stay full, not how ANET sets the caps and that is for the good of the whole game. Stop being so selfish.

The reason T1 isn’t getting as much WvW participation out of their casuals right now is not only about HoT either. When a world stacks itself just for the sake of having numbers and then has guilds jumping back and forth between the top 3 to create artificial balance you get the loyalty and commitment to community from the fairweathers that you deserve. While great core communities do exist in the top tiers the majority of the playerbase is sheltered from them and never has any reason to go looking for ways to contribute. This is the true failure of ANET. Sadly T1 worlds who started out the most organized just recruited themselves out of having tight knit communities and traded them for more bodies to throw on the lines.

And yes, I am a bitter former T1er.

For those who don’t think more than one reset in a week is a good idea, what is the ideal time for reset in single week match-up if you were starting over from scratch?

I am not convinced Fridays at 5pm PDT is actually the best time for a reset in a week long match-up but then I am not entirely sold on Saturday evening yet either. I guess we will be testing that for the next little while and a little while in ANET time can end up kinda of long since 5pm PDT on Fridays was originally only supposed to be temporary. When it comes time to revisit that choice it could give us an opportunity for something entirely new if the WvW community could agree on anything for once. You have to admit, we are a very fractured bunch with a lot of different play-styles that must make ANET’s head spin with our lists of contradictory demands.

I tend to agree with Rev that in a week long reset, mid or late week with an earlier start would probably end up with most balanced match-ups competitiveness wise, Wed or Thurs noon to 3pm PDT time frame all sound reasonable to me.

It would be pretty fun to at least have a test season with shorter match-ups just to get a sense what that would be like. Maybe a month long season where the first two weeks have 48hr match-ups and then longer ones for the final & deciding matches.

John indicated the Friday nite reset was never something meant to continue beyond the first few months of the game. That gives me the impression that the reason it was Friday 5pm PDT was only because that was the end of the work week for ANET and some poor dev actually had to do something manually at first or just babysit the reset switch for 30 minutes before heading home for the weekend. This could have especially been true initially when they were running 48hr resets to settle the glicko.

Then it just became habit so they left it there until now when it was no longer convenient to them. While others have been pointing that the lack of game updates that happen on Friday afternoons the number of them has been increasing lately and the WvW crowd was getting pretty upset every time there was a patch right after reset. Maybe ANET knows something we do not.

Maybe they foresee increasing the number of patches on Fridays. GW1 has weekend events all the time and a lot more frequent holiday events, maybe GW2 post HoT launch is going include more holidays and weekend events. Maybe data mining issues are making it harder for ANET to pre-patch as much of their content for such events. I would happily trade Friday resets for more weekend events . . . the right kind of non-golem like events of course

Let’s do a thought exercise where the launch of HoT is like GW3 instead of an expansion and you are a developer at ANET who has to present their ideas on what the new best ideal for WvW match-ups should become in the face of this being a whole new game with a whole new set of traditions and new more defensively orientated maps (since that is what the new dessert borderland feels like at this point).

How many resets in a week would you propose given the history of WvW in GW2 including everything we’ve learned from EotM? How many hours long is the best amount of time to keep the meaningfulness of the match-up and yet minimize the affects of “night capping” in a world wide 24/7 MMO?

What time (in PDT since that is the time zone ANET uses) should that match reset occur? There is no one single time that is ideal for all players so if you were going to use any metrics from GW2 which ones would you suggest they choose to make this decision?

Yikes! This is not easy, I’ve already gone through 3 reiterations in trying to think things through thoroughly. I am just going to go with the assumption that having one reset time is easier to code for along with the idea that glicko can be managed to handle unequal match lengths somehow and that more than one match up in week would be good for the game mode.

I think I might go with 3 resets in a week of 3 different lengths, 24hrs, 48hrs & 96hrs; the 24hr match up being from Saturday 6pm PDT to Sunday 6pm PDT, Sunday 6pm to Thursday 6pm for the 4 day match up with Thursday to Saturday nite being the 48hr one. Hopefully that variation would allow for the maximum amount of different playstlyles, long and hard pushes or fast and furious and everything in between for all timezones. I also think this would make the hours leading up the end of the matches much more important and blow-outs leading to karma trains less common.

What would you suggest and why?

I just have to say, I am kind of excited to see some late match-up Friday nite pushes in closer contests. Comebacks out maneuvering complacent opponents are a much bigger rush for me than those chaotic resets. There is no reason we all have to give up and declare Fridays a karma train day now. This could actually be very healthy for the game outside of those complete blow out match-ups but we really need to focus on making them more rare anyways.

How do propose that we make blowout matches more rare? Don’t get me wrong it would be nice but it’s not a reasonable expectation. Blowouts are a direct result of server populations. Unless Anet is willing to manipulate server populations in some way I don’t see how you prevent them.

And that is a very important discussion to have when we start getting some info’s on ANET’s plans for their next big WvW patch. The community can help immensely by being more willing to destack the overpopulated tiers but that may not feel like a rewarding thing to do until a little while after HoT’s launch when things settle down again.

ANET can help more by offering incentives for transfers off of full world to lower population ones and revising the glicko system to be more responsive so rising stars and sinking ships move thru the ranks a bit faster. ANET has already taken a step in the right direction with the new WvW population calculations and locking down full words but instead of getting our support they are seeing a lot of grief for it. The last CDI had a ton of other ideas on the subject I hope to see brought up again as the discussion moves forward.

Constructive feedback: have more resets so more people can experience reset rush. Also have reset on Fridays, give Anet employees Fridays off and have that extra work day on Sunday. I think those suggestions adequately line up with Anet’s statements.

Thanks for offering a constructive suggestion. But wouldn’t that sort of tilt things, to have multiple resets? I’m not an expert on competitive play, and I’d leave and assessment for the people who are more knowledgeable. But it seems to me there’s a reason for the resets not happening on a more frequent basis.

How do others see this suggestion? (Remember, I have no influence on this, I’m just genuinely curious!)

Good late evening Gaile, lovely to see the wise frogs voice of sanity in this thread <3 hope you are already tucked in with your wine by now but I did want to comment on the above real quick since you asked.

At launch when we had two day and 24hr resets it was maybe a bit too much but now that the game has matured to the point where all the glaring timezone coverage issues have been brought to light I think more players are interested in trying something different with reset length to see how it feels. 2 or 3 resets in a week could shake up some stale match-ups quite nicely but of course seven days don’t divide up very easily without making for rolling reset times which I am sure would cause your coders fits right when they need less work not more.

Anyways, changing the length of a WvW match was something much discussed in previous CDI threads with some red tags “looking” into it so it would be lovely to hear back on sometime. Maybe bring it up in a general meeting some afternoon just for your own genuine curiosity and see where things sit for us.

Hello All,

Launching a game is an enormous undertaking and our teams need time to address any issues that come up. Therefore after launch we must move WvW reset to Saturday. We will keep resets on Saturday to address issues and once we are in the clear we will evaluate the best time for WvW reset both for us as a company as well as for our players.

Since it is clear that we cannot pick a time that will work for everyone, we will be maintaining our original plan of shifting reset by 24 hours, to Saturday evening. That time was based on data for when prime time occurs in each region.

Seems fair. Sticking with the data seems like the best approach even in the face of that initial backlash. One of those kitten ed if you do, kitten ed if you don’t situations. Hopefully people will be more understanding with this further explanation and the promise to re-evaluate in the future. A different reset day every so often actually sounds like fun to me.

You all got me a little excited with thoughts of more frequent resets so hopefully you guys are taking a look at that option for your upcoming WvW patch. Best of luck with your HoT launch. May all your lag ships have smooth sailing and tricker-treat bags be full of goodies.

If ANET’s team was that big 150+ then maybe we could get some real WvW changes with substance.

Given that ANET believes they have a legitimate solid reason for wanting reset time to be something other than Friday maybe a different poll is in order. I don’t have a problem with reset as it is but if it can’t be that, then what is the “best” time and how are they suppose to go about figuring that out in a 24/7 game with players from all over the world? Obviously whatever this method is isn’t going so well right now.

Excuse me, first of all dont start insulting us then ask us to “chill” acting all righteous. Your condescending and hypocritical attitude, not to mention total ignorance of the topic does not help the situation but yet you insist on insulting us as if its wrong for us to argue against what we see as a terribly BAD change. Just because there is a change doesnt mean its good, are we just supposed to accept everything and stay silent? What if that change totally screws up your gaming weekend? Do you like being told how and when to play? Do you like not being able to play with your guild? Do you like having these idiotic decisions forced on you with no input, reasons given initially, and constant silence?

Yikes, if that is what you got out of what I wrote then I failed miserably to make my point, which was mostly just looking for ways to make lemonade for those less happy with the change. Please by all means, never stop arguing for what you think is right but I’ve seen exactly how far that gets us around here and just thought there might be some better ways to express dissatisfaction while also maybe looking for silver linings so the disappointment isn’t so bitter when things don’t go the way you hoped. Regardless of what is right or wrong or better, tantrums should never produce results but that is a deeper discussion for another forum.

The time change to Saturday afternoon was actually a response to a lot of the previous crying trying to find a way to get more weekend time out of the deal….

By cutting the weekend in half they find a way to get more time out of it? I’m very confused.

I am sorry, I mean the time change from Saturday night to Saturday afternoon/am. At the start of this thread when the change was first announced there a lot of posts saying Saturday night reset makes it so SEA/OCX players only have 1/2 of their Sunday weekend playtime after reset so ANET moved the time up to Saturday afternoon agreeing with the principle that more weekend hours post reset would be better for more players. This is of course working under the assumption that Friday is no longer an option whether you agree with their reasoning for that or not. /shrug

WvW population idea

It would be nice to know if you guys at arenanet have read this thread/are going to talk about it, it’s really not a hard thing to make and would solve a lot of problems. For example this morning: SFR-AG ( since sfr has moved to ag pretty much ) is karma farming all maps, our server managed to get 3-4 players because generally people know we have given up. When a commander was trying, nobody was coming because we can’t communicate with our server. We have a forum with a shoutbox, but when you’re playing the game, you’re not checking it.

It’s a simple thing but such a big deal, i wish it would be taken a bit more serious.
Or at least let me and others know it’s going to be looked into.

Right now is probably the worst possible time to be asking for WvW feedback on this issue on this forum so good luck with that. I expect we will start to see some news about their plans for the WvW patch by the end of the year after the dust from HoT’s launch has settled down and hopefully there will be something in there to help address this issue or if not, at least some red name posts to bring up the discussion in.

We probably wont even get the WvW patch until spring 2016 anyways so be prepared to wait another 6 months. These kinds of things are never as simple as they seem like they should be so your exact idea may not even be possible but as long as we keep bringing up this same general theme it should help keep it on their mind. I will also point out that this particular thread title probably does not support your premise all that well to help it get noticed.

Jeeze people . . . I think my face just melted off trying to read all these venomous comments. Can’t you all just chill out a bit and try to have a reasonable discussion about the issue? The time change to Saturday afternoon was actually a response to a lot of the previous crying trying to find a way to get more weekend time out of the deal so maybe if we better presented our concerns instead of knee-jerk reactions we could figure out what we actually really want out of our WvW reset experience.

First I have a serious question for the more hardcore WvW’ers because I will admit to being completely ignorant on the importance of playing right at reset. Without orbs I fail to see why having queues at reset is a desirable thing. Is it really that important and why exactly?

I haven’t been able to be on for a reset in over two years and it has not personally affected my enjoyment of WvW as a casual player. I usually show up 3 to 5 hours after reset and that would not likely change with the reset time being changed to 11am PST as I would get some afternoon WvW time most Saturdays.

Now I understand that reset time is made exciting by the sheer numbers of people sharing particular goals at that particular moment but is there any reason that cannot be replicated at a different time outside of the reset experience?

Why do guild WvW raids have to happen at reset? Is not just as fun to play and push with your guildies and realm mates at whatever time the most of them happen to be on? Wont that be a different time for different worlds?

Wouldn’t having this earlier reset time actually make more for a slow burn WvW experience and maybe even increase the chances of the smaller more organized teams taking down a more populous one? Remember those good old alarm clock relic raids in DAoC? Wouldn’t it also make for more ppt swings as time zone populations develop throughout a much longer reset? So instead of all the excitement in the first 5 hours it actually makes the first 18hrs of the reset fun to play for more people regardless of if they are there at the start?

Aren’t all the issues centered around only a few hours of reset time being the most enjoyable for some really just a symptom of a much great problem about how match-ups are scored and shouldn’t we hoping ANET will be focused on those instead of trying to find the perfect hour of the day to reset WvW?

Likely discussions like these need to happen outside of this thread since we are too busy hating change here but they are things to think about. It does sound like the choices are pretty clear, you can have reset on Saturday evening or Saturday afternoon. If Friday is off the table entirely, the important question to ask ANET is if any other day is possible or to try and find an alternative time on Saturday that will please a bigger majority.

Considering ANET has only recently figured out how to measure world populations caps with active WvW players I understand the skepticism of their use of metrics to make decisions like these so I agree with those asking for more details on how they arrived at this being the optimal time. I also agree with those who have floated Thursday night as a possible alternative if we are going to continue with week long match-ups for the foreseeable future but I would prefer to get it down to at least 2 different match-up in a week if not three. We just have to stop caring about reset getting screwed up by patches so kitten much since that is what got us into this mess in the first place. ><

Personally I’d like to see two resets per week, one on Saturday and one on Wednesday but until then, Saturday sounds like a fun little experiment in change. Now if only WvW players could handle that.

I don’t see why they don’t make it a 6 day ‘week’ and have the reset night change every week. Then people who have different work schedules or play time preferences all get ‘optimal’ reset time once and a while.

I don’t see why people are only wanting to fight for points the first few days of WvW but I do see that it happens. Even though with Gliko every point matters so playing on Saturday is just as important as any other day of the week. If you say people don’t care about the Gliko and winning then again why does it matter when reset is, if people are available and playing on Friday it can still be fun fights.

An unexpected side effect of this change that might be super good. People will log in on Friday and early Saturday because it’s the weekend but won’t care to get objectives or defend them so instead they will just fight each other (maybe). This could make the people that like open field fights just to fight have a bit of the weekend to enjoy.

One thing is for sure, things will feel different for a while and then will settle in to a ‘meta’ after a while (for better or worse).

Some very good points Pink. I expect this is just the first step towards changing the length of match-ups as talked about in the last CDI. It might be that soon there will be a 2nd weekly reset happening on Wednesdays and this change will give each match-up 36hrs of “weekend” play time if you could Friday as part of the weekend of course.

Don’t forget they also recently changed when guild mission reset times happen and this could possibly be related to that in some round about server reset mechanism change kind of way.

I am a bit dismayed by how quickly some of you all are ready to jump all over this change as horrid. To be honest at this point wouldn’t we all like to some kind of change to WvW regardless of what? And maybe come the WvW patch (which I expect we wont see till until spring 2016) with more data in hand some better choices could be made. Maybe it has something to do with an upcoming major change to how seasons will work that we don’t know about yet.

I am very interested to see how this change affects the match-ups and play-styles over the rest of the week. New and different is not always a bad thing people.

WvW population idea

The only problem with WvW events is making sure they are not the kinds of events that encourage farming. We don’t want all our WvW maps to be like EotM once in awhile, or do we?

in a lot of ways I always figured some of this was what the Extended Experience App was designed to address way back when and then got dropped long before launch, a way to make the WvW experience more interactive and connected to the rest of the game. It’s a bummer they didn’t pull off another way to make the connection. Heck, I’d love to even just to be able to see the WvW complete map status from PvE somehow and not only the pie chart.

Another thing the megaservers really screwed up that has yet to been addressed is world selection. New players are making that choice with very little understanding of what it means and the long term consequences. It is very sad that ANET has done so well with the overall game community tools and yet failed so badly at the WvW specific ones.

Estimating Pop Using Kill/Death Stats

It was interesting to see that there are more kills and deaths in T2 then in T1.

Shows a big difference in play style for sure. T1 is all about the PPT where map blobs avoid fights just to back cap.

I’ve always thought they could use the chat channels to address this issue. Didn’t we have a bug in one of the BWE’s before launch were we could see our worlds team chat in PvE? That was before the megaserver business of course. Adding an additional world wide channel that players can manage how they see fit (visible on whichever tabs you set) with very strict spam limitations & lock outs to avoid WTS/B notices seems like it would be a nice QoL addition.

There was a lot of asking for LA to return to world specific instances for much of the same reason but I think we were told that wasn’t in their realm of possibility at the time. World specific chat channels have also been discussed and I thought it was something we might be going to hear back on someday but I guess they’ve been busy with HoT for the last . . . 18 months or so.

EotM: What Server should I switch to?

in my experience being on the green side is actually the least fun in EotM. Which color your team is less important than the map you end up on. The regular EotM comms tend to join at reset so if possible hit the map when a match is just starting. Also add anyone you find enjoyable to play with or follow in EotM to your friends list to help improve your map placement chances.

I don’t know how many shards of EotM EU gets going during your prime time but in NA it can be tricky to hit the “fun” maps but then again, that all depends on what your definition of fun is. I like the ones where huge three way battles break out all over the place but those are kind of rare.

[Suggestions] Remove Edge of the Mists

I still think the EotM map would make a fun Eternal Battleground map with a few tweaks (open cap point in the aetherblades) and our current EB map could be made into a borderland map after they took SM out to replace it (and its horrid lag) with a big open battle field or the ruins of the former castle. I suppose you could instead rework EotM into a borderland map instead, then make one the Desert borderland and keep Apline for the 3rd. Point being, 4 unique maps using WvW rules would be more fun for everyone. Then all they have to do is add in a WvW reward track similar to PvP and get the population balance figured out and we’d be set for awhile.

Congrats on not transferring to lower server to make the whole of WvW matchups more even, fair, fun and enjoyable for all; and instead try to recruit more to an already full server!

I desperately wanted to stick with my original BWE1 server of choice for the long the haul (World Pride represent!) and always spoke out against my beloved JQ’s incessant recruiting campaigns as being determintal to the game overall so after three years I decided go live by my principals on Ehmry Bay instead. So far its been a lot of fun actually having an impact on fights again.

I do miss a lot of the very cool people from JQ and congratulate them on their determination to stay on top through a lot of rough times. Some people just prefer to play the game with a metric ton of friends and accomplices. To each their own. JQ did build a very pleasant community to be a part of and hopefully did not too terribly impact others with their assimilation process. /salute JQ

Servers after HoT hit

There are a lot of players that spend a fair amount of time in WvW that are ‘taking a break’ until HoT release. I would think you can expect to see population levels on all servers go up a noticable amount when HoT comes out, however don’t expect this to ‘fix’ all the problems in fact it might make more (since some server may gain more or less players creating population in-balances)

The fact that ANET will not have time to do any WvW focused fixes until well after HoT’s launch and the fact that HoT itself will seriously mess with the norm of WvW populations for a while does have me a bit worried. I get the feeling ANET was hoping to capitalize on former players coming back to check out HoT and F2P accounts enough that we would not notice some of the more major issues with the new Desert Borderland map and population imbalances in general. It is unfortunate that they could not take the time to set up a better system 6 months ago before things got into such a sad state as they are now but I guess we are stuck waiting for a fix.

I just don’t want to see people forget where the real problems are or get too distracted by shiny new class specializations imbalances. There are a lot of ways WvW needs support and it helps that ANET listed them is pretty much the correct order on their “issues” post but six more months from now are we all still going to be able to agree on anything? I hope so, WvW population imbalance dramatically affects everything else that is goofy in WvW as well and what kind of fixes ANET entertains should be greatly affected by the opinions we all express over the next several months. How much protection of community will we be willing to trade for entertainment to last us another three years? Is it too late for many of the elements that drew a lot of us to WvW in the first place?

Guild "Dry Your Eyes" impressive on EOTM

I was on the dying end of one of Wooden Potatoes experimental ice bow bomb groups in EotM a few months back and it was pretty hilarious reading all the chat text screaming about hacks and exploits and then watching his video the next day explaining exactly how he was able to trait such a group to pull off some very spectacular bombs with no cheats of any kind so maybe do a little more research into it to see what might be possible.

I’ve also seen some pretty weird hacks before as well so no doubt they exist, but they are more rare than one might think after reading EotM chat. You have to admit that Dry Your Eyes [DYE] is a pretty clever gank guild name tho.

Lag in EotM can often times produce some very strange results not unlike the old days of culling where blobs come popping out of nowhere and effects & sound fail to render properly even when you are getting good ping so I think of it more like map lag than player lag. EotM is a strange fish, game physics seem a bit weird in there sometimes. Best advice I can give is not to take it too seriously and have fun.

correct, unless enough players leave (quit or transfer) the full world or stop logging into WvW for several weeks.

And as painful as it is for a small minority of people, it is the right thing for the game and I will continue to say that even after all my friends return to the game to play on our full world of origin where I can no longer join them since I transferred down to stop being part of the problem.

How on earth would you possibly be able to know that? Just because T1 doesn’t queue all its maps anymore? Maybe the mode just isn’t all that entertaining these days to hold attention like it once did.

It is more likely that the new world population calculation has to figure in all the casual and fair-weather players that the top tiers have an extreme over abundance of. Problem of course is those are the least likely players to transfer down so the full worlds need to get vocal about supporting world transfer incentives that casual players might jump on if they ever have any hope of bringing in new blood. It is hard to feel sorry for T1 NA tho, you all did this to yourselves with your extreme recruiting campaigns and multi accounts everywhere.

the better way is for ANET to implement some way for newly paid accounts that were formerly f2p to re-select their world since they didn’t really have a clue where they would end up when choosing as a new player, especially since that choice is meaningless until they were at least lvl 60. The whole selecting your world before character creation at this point post mega-servers makes no sense and they have admitted as much but I guess it is buried too deep in the code/logic to get back out again.

I still think people are being super paranoid about all these f2p accounts flooding WvW even when some worlds would love to see that happen just for some variety.

Glicko between T1 and T2

It’s a process that will take many weeks but it’s possible to get a 6 servers rotation without ANET intervention and this week is the start of it if you want it.

That’s a big IF for T1 but I hope for the sake of variety they are smart enough to see the benefits of using this opportunity to bleed out some of that wall building Glicko. Free accounts are going to affect the world populations in the open tiers soon so might as well get it straight what you actually want out of WvW at the top these days.

Doesn’t matter to me anymore, I am done with T1 for good and heading down your way to Ehmry Bay.

IMHO it was the T1 overstacking of YB in T2 that is “livening up” the lower tiers. T1 isn’t having a mass exodus of players and guilds leave due to Full status.

Yet . . . for now we seem to be trying the boycott method in case that can manipulate the full status cap any which is unlikely as all 3 are beyond full given the extreme PvE & casual WvW pops there are on those superstacked worlds. You got to figure the general number of inactive accounts assigned to a world count for some of small percentage when it comes to calculating that WvW base potential.

I expect it will take annoying queues at HoT launch to get a lot of Tier 1 to wake up and smell the fullness but there are some who hope to find a new home well before then. Things are just a bit messy out there right now.

Sort of looking for the same deal but this probably isn’t the thread (or forum either I guess but too bad there isn’t one) for that

Assuming NA, I’ve heard in the past SBI was a good pugmander world and was to be my destination but with the recent T3 GvG flocking going on not so sure anymore, going to be more of a wait and see sort of thing. NSP & SoR also in the mix for pug friendly from rumors but too bad they shut down the match-up forums where one could get a better sense of world personalities at large. For those of us who will only ever transfer once it sure would be nice to know what all is out and about these days but I imagine that is pretty hard to nail down right with everything in flux from these changes.

Everyone on T1 one is going to have a friend (real or imagined) that they would like to play with at some point so they really can’t try to bend the rules for any sorts of exceptions. Players just have to learn to adapt and we are usually pretty darned good at that. The only thing I think might still be missing to help speed the process along is a way for players on full servers to earn a free transfer off so those who have moral objections to the idea of paying to move and maybe less skin in the game on their full homeworld can relocate more easily.

I’ve been waiting nearly a year to transfer down since I take the whole world pride a bit more seriously than most but I have known for awhile that T1 is not for me. Friends are what keeps me staying put and when most of them no longer play regularly the worry is what will happen when they come back at some point like most MMO’ers do eventually. I think I’ll be waiting a little while longer to see how T3 settles out but still plan to find a new home before HoT hits because those 3 hours queues when all of us casuals come flocking in at once in T1 are not going to cut it for me.

Sounds like the population cap is working as intended. Move to T3, stop trying to bandwagon full servers.

The servers aren’t full though. Just because Arenanet says it is full doesn’t mean it is. We have no queue on JQ since reset. Does that sound like a full server?

No, JQ is very very overfull and has been for a long time. No queue does not equal not full and not having a queue today doesn’t mean you need more players right now, do more with less like all the other worlds below knowing your fairweather army will show up for the newest shiny later on. I am sure there are tons of players on the server who are less interested in WvW at the moment than they use to be for all kinds of reasons, but being over stacked and having a lack of cohesive community lately certainly hasn’t helped any. Just wait until HoT launch to enjoy those 2hour queues again. ANET doesn’t use the map caps on any given sunny summer Sunday afternoon to set the world population lock, thank goodness.

I agree it kind of sucks for ocean/sea time zones where there is less population totals across all worlds to draw from so I guess the solution there is to try and get more publicity in those areas. Luckily there will be this crazy new expansion coming out soon to help with that.

Are T1/T2 servers forever permalocked now?

If it helps any, T1 is in a sad state as well. We had 30 players in TS for all 4 maps at the start of NA Prime. That’s it… 30! Players just aren’t logging into WvW anymore. The mode got hit hard with the Golem rush event, the ridiculous transfer’s to YB, and now the server lock downs. I don’t know which of them was the straw or if it was the combination of all 3 but, a lot of players seem to be completely done with the game and WvW for now.

So GJ! to those involved in such things, you successfully imploded the mode.

I think right now in the middle of summer sunshine when there has not been any real new content in GW2 in 8 months, almost a year since the last WvW tourney and people are jumping on and off the HoT hype train like it is going out of style is probably the worst time to make any sort of sweeping statements about the state of WvW populations on any given tier. We all know T1 is so overfull in NA timezones at least that it is likely double the new cap and we all know tons of people are on “holiday” for whatever reason right now so lets not starting crying about how we can’t play that super stacker game anymore covering our lulls with MOAR players. Lest we forget that is how we all ended up this mess in the first place with a community so diluted and lackluster that it is hard to care about. We pretty much broke it ourselves and I don’t envy ANET trying to find the least harmful fix for the long run but dang, you gotta give it a little bit of time people.

Hi, I’m posting today the transcript of the statement that John Corpening, game director for World vs. World, made last week at the beginning of the World vs. World Desert Borderlands Invitational. Enjoy!

Interesting that we hadn’t heard about this statement in the forums until now. No WvW forum regulars got invited as PvE streamers took all the slots? Or maybe some did but took the statement as non-newsworthy spin?

What forums and youtube streams have you been on lately? I’ve seen links to the video version of this statement in multiple places including here. So what if it took them a few days to get a red tag post for it. That is the least of our worries. It’s gamescon week & a BWE weekend so we should be getting flooded soon enough.

As to the statement itself, they pretty much have the right stuff targeted for work in the correct order so it will just have to be seen how many resources they are given to work with and how long it will take. In general WvW changes seem to come 6mo or so after talked about so we are looking at next spring for a lot this. Will be interesting to see where things are then but I expect the novelty of HoT ought to last at least till then for most of us.

So what I’d like to see is ANet creating incentives to encourage folks to move around. I’d like to see glicko scores closer for T1-3 which diverge heavily from the nine worlds of T4-6 that are similarly close. I imagine this will involve:

  • A reward system closer to that which we see in PvP now.
  • Incentives for moving and staying put. Disincentives for bandwagoning.
  • Use of market forces in addition to the current fixed costs.
  • Ways to make it easier to move entire guilds quickly, whether sponsored by the destination server or not.
  • Regularly scheduled tournaments with predictable schedules, achievements, and rewards.

Totally agree with everything above, those would be huge steps in the right direction to help balance happen more quickly and equitably under the new world population cap system.

I am sure it has a lot to do with the patches for the BWE, HoT prep and maybe even that kitten new dragon mini pet. I vote for mini pets to be disabled for all players in WvW. Nothing but resource hogs there.

But yeah, I never say no to lower WvW map caps for so many reasons that if it help anyone even a little bit it would be a good thing. The lag in EB last nite was so stupid bad I just sat there and laughed while watching zergs collide that took forever to kill anyone. o.O

Just stop coming up with ideas that would kill WvW and all the reasons we (or at least i ) love it

EotM isn’t an alliance system, it’s just a random melting pot of all the servers together. ESO has done it right for the WvW alliance system and it’s what Anet should base a new system upon.

If it was only 3 Alliances then yes EotM is exactly that. It would be far too big of a community to ever result anything substantial and no one would care if their side won when they were not playing. If ANET did anything other than worlds with launch they would have had to put major work into developing those factions with enough of them to create distinct communities where people could get to know each other and considering half of the players they wanted to draw from where use to other MMO’s where servers were a thing it would have been a hard sell.

Considering they could not even bother to support the communities that came out of their world system (which was the easy way for them development wise) I have absolutely no faith that they could have had time to do any sort of faction system in a way that would have had any longevity for realm pride folks like myself. It would have gotten stale and old very quickly without any investment in getting to know your fellow fighters and enemies alike.
