This is certainly not an op thread, just curious. I fought a Ranger in hotjoin. He was by himself other than his pet, and he used traps. Myself, a thief, and another thief on my team as well as 2 thieves guild thieves never took his hp under 3/4 due to tons of dodges and blocks during a 3 minute fight before I gave up and walked off. He had plenty of boons and his traps looked traited. How common is such a beastly build? If not for being able to shadow step past traps he would have destroyed us.
The trait mug. Nothing to do with stealth
Thankfully they didn’t place their traps well. They dropped them and ran so I’d use shadow steps to bypass them. So they couldn’t do muchto me but I could barely scratch them with the help of another thief and 2 thieves from my elite
I fought a Ranger last night that was just insane… a trap Ranger with tons of boons, dodges, blocks, and tanky. In the rare event anything hit him it did such miniscule damage even with another thief and thieves guild and dagger storm. We could not kill it…
This is hardly a balanced match… Look at the rank combinations here… Why can’t the higher ranks only play in higher ranked matches? -.-

….Beware, there is someone swearing in this SS…. For who knows what reason….
Thank you, Causic. I didn’t hear that part, but I did skip around… an hour and a half was a bit too long for my interest.
I’m mostly talking damage wise. I have no qualms with disengaging, following my target from a safe distance and trying again if they shut me down the first time and fail to actually kill me and be better prepared for round 2. I’m more worried about our damage being nerfed to oblivion to the point we can’t kill wet paper bags, and can only run from them.
So, I’m just wondering, with all the changes of all the professions, do you think a thief who has over time, learned their profession fairly well would still be able to 1v1 other professions say… 2 years from now? I don’t mean just relying on C&D>Backstab, but any builds? Anet said they wanted thieves to be mobile and slippery, this doesn’t say much for damage… (Unless they said elsewhere they want us to always have good damage?)
I just don’t want to waste tons of time and money on a character that will be left behind in future buffs making us pretty much scavengers only able to finish the weak and already battle weary, or complete newbies. I don’t expect to win every 1v1 encounter, but I don’t feel like losing them all either. Not counting people who just started the game or are upleveled, but people who have had time to be on par with you gear/stat wise. As it stands, we have the potential to take out any other profession if we play our cards right, or they are not… up to par skill wise… Do you think thieves will always have this potential?
TL;DR Do you think thieves will always be able to do well in 1v1s against someone who is matched gear/(player) skill wise? Not win them all, but have the potential to win in most cases.
Noob here. I like that mug will heal now! I usually use it mid combat though… 2k of 17k total hp sounds like it could be a massive improvement theoretically. Having access to 3 heals, and a potentially useful stolen item? Yes please… Then again I partake of spvp wvw and pve…
Ok, every single time I go to this map, about 5 minutes in, I freeze lag. My skills activate but don’t actually fire, and can have all of them activating at once… It will stay like this for about 20 seconds, then things fast forward and and somehow I get kills and downed and rally etc in this time…. Then once it catches up it is fine for like a minute, and then it happens again, only this time it will actually DC me… It only happens on this map. It isn’t my connection, or my computer, I assure you. My girlfriend who plays 2 feet away from me, same thing. Only Spirit watch.
Any fixes, or anyone experiencing something similar?
No. I saw you mostly used it for closing gaps. People will make comments about how painful it is to watch you click your skills instead of hot key them like a “pro” :p (I also click skills…)
Beware…. incoming messages about how skill clickers = noobs regardless of how well you do….
Keep up the fun work. Play what works for you!
Or at the least only force it to be watched once. The intro is the hardest part of farming for chest. Not skins. I don’t get those :p
me; 300+ chest. 0 skins.
Girlfriend; 150+\- chest… 8 skins. 3 of which being shields.
What the kitten……
Friendly advice from a prefect stranger on a semi competitive game seems out of the norm. In which case of it was indeed sincerely friendly advice I apologize if I came off as a kitten.
Whatever. It works for me. If it bugged you that much simply ignore any future post/screen shots/videos.

Sorry we aren’t all as hardcore or “1337” like you. Is that the only argument you can come up with? It works for me. I get ample kills no matter the situation. So unless you can say something other than omg skill klicr nub, your wasting your time.
Not a set up. Just a noob. In the un cut version I’m chasing a mesmer to a supply camp and this guy came up behind me. But tbh most 1v1s I’ve had are like this… Maybe it’s because I’m on a t1 server where MOST. NOT ALL people don’t know what to do without their zerg…
I’m not saying mesmer or engi is op from a serious standpoint. I’m saying an engineer can bring more than confusion to the table than a mesmer in terms of bringing more utility and Armor, as well as other forms of damage when your fighting someone who knows what confusion does. A mesmer sacrifices a lot when building for Max confusion but is sol against someone who wipes it or doesn’t attack, while an engineer, not so much.
Rezzet. Your dense. They shatter their reta. They also have 0 hard damage and less Armor when using a confusion build. Us being able to go melee is a good thing. We can take a lot more hits. We have far more that we can offer using confusion than mesmers. Have a great day.
Ya. I’ve fought people who knew not to hit me while under confusion. It was a Ranger who gave me my best 1v1 ever. It lasted 5 mins before he was petless and I finally got the edge and win
Without using confusion.
Although I still don’t think a bit of a nerf to confusion would hurt. Or reta… Oh the times I’ve one shot myself in a zerg lol.
Sadly that tactic works far more often than it should. But it was more so a response to people saying confusion mesmers are op. Confusion is pretty much all those builds have whilst an engi can still kill in other ways. So what I’m saying is since mesmer is apparently op with a confusion build that seems no where near as effective and far more squishy, engi would have to be op too.

It is very rarely that I lose to a mensmer 1v1. It has happened, just not often. And never to a confusion mesmer. Usually a burst after they turn me in to a chicken. Now multiple mesmers on the other hand can really kitten in my cheerios….
Mesmers can do it by range but engineers can take hits better and have retaliation…. It takes a mesmer longer to put on as many stacks than an engi also. Please tell me how I’m trolling
The only reason it took so long is because I was caught off guard and expected a fight. Not a scrub. And to more so one up mesmers engi also has several more spammable conditions and plenty of survivability in comparison. A confusion mesmer typically won’t have much in the ways of defense because of what they have to give for their build to work whereas engi has gear sheild, auto elixer b and s, a kd, etc etc etc….
(edited by PhelanDisturbed.1650)
I used it in the mesmer forum because someone said confusion mesmers were OP… I only added it there to show them who does condi better, it isn’t the mesmer xD And I added it here, so that people can see you don’t need HGH to do any killing… I have done some group fights, but I am trying to get more than 2 mins worth of footage before posting. I have however, fought some people who were good… It took ages to kill them…
I vote engi is OP :p
I posted this video over on the mesmer forum when someone decided to QQ about confusion mesmers being OP…
Here is a confusion engi (Yours truly) without buffs, who was caught off guard by a buffed guardian, who died before I even got to finish my lineup… =[
Normally, those numbers would have been a great deal higher, but I didn’t want to waste food or tools that day…
Not sure if part time is the correct word, but it depends on the guild I join…
I don’t want to be in a massive guild, or a small dead one, or a large dead one, or one that everything takes place on a voip… Looking for a more active guild, 20-100 people, PvE, sPvP, WvW, and Dungeons… I don’t expect everyone on all the time of course, but seeing a constant 5+ people would be nice. I usually play various hours throughout the day, so I don’t have a real schedule.
I don’t like feeling forced to use a voip to do anything. It just seems like the bigger guild I am in, all I really see going on is meta event farming, so ideally, a guild where people level alts, etc etc…
There are times I will go a few days at a time without playing, and others I hardly leave the computer, but if I need an extended afk time, I would be willing to inform a leader/officer.
Any other details/questions can be discussed via in game mail, or forum mail. Or posted here, of course.
Hey that’s fun too. My main is an engi and love dropping a crate on hidden thieves xD. I like the random factors of 1v1 encounters. … trying to play each profession so I can counter things much better but in the end I think my main will become my thief when I’ve learned enough about everything else
Who said anything about evades? between so much stealth and shadow steps I like to toy with most unprepared people and watch their omg thief reaction.
Ya. Effective power. As for them surviving my first wave, depending on the profession I’ll toy with them before letting loose, let them think they know what’s coming spending most of their damage. It works well for me. Although I have still been stomped due to my under estimating or a small mistake sometimes. *please don’t flame me for my play style choices… >. < just wondering how much I can trust gw2buildcraft
(edited by PhelanDisturbed.1650)
Was messing on gw2buildcraft for thief builds. The end result was over 7k power, over 100% crit dmg and around 70% chance to crit. Obviously using some ascended gear and consumables.
I like going for low survivability by stats, but using mobility and tactics for staying alive so no need to tell me how squishy I’ll be. I don’t intend on being in a zerg.
Basically, are those stats really achievable? That’s a bit insane.
Charr engi. CoF shoulders, boots, and gloves. Hotw mask, coat, and leggings. It looks rather kitten imo. Perfect for an engineer.
My 2 cents; yes they are over played. So was the assassin in gw1. A few nerfs and tweaks later with some buffs to others changed that. I’m also sure thieves will drop in numbers when new professions are released. But as it stands from a few sources I’ve used; gw2 census, a few large guilds and personal experience, thieves are roughly the forth most played overall profession. But higher in pvp. I also think that number will drop over the next few months. As the person above me said, it’s mostly the novelty of the thief that attracts new players so a) novelty wears off eventually and b) just because there are a lot of thieves in pvp situations doesn’t mean they are all good. Tbh most thieves I fight are easier to kill than the hotm thief npc… However there are those with notable skill other than doing the same thing over and over.
Tl; dr yes they are over played in pvp. Not so much in pve. A good portion of them wont stay as a thief because they rely on overused tactics. Good thieves are underplayed.
… I’ll take my leave for now….
Mesmers alone aren’t too bad, but when you have 4-5, who are all rank 20+ as it seems to be every freaking morning… It is just silly… I had been hit earlier today by 12 hits of mindwrack in a single go… Nope… nothing at all wrong with that…. How about a cap for sPvP of x of each profession per team? And rank limits also… ranks 1-13 vs ranks 28-42… In tPvP, it doesn’t matter because your not typically in a pug, but how is anyone supposed to rank up in these conditions?
Another Game keeps lagging/resetting issue...

Ok, so I play on a laptop, running 680m sli, i7 processor, 16gb ram, etc etc… I maintain 60fps constantly… But the past few days I have been getting a ton of lag spikes, despite fraps and gw2 saying I’m still at 60fps. I have a 15mbps connection according to speedtest.
I’m on SoR server, and I can’t even finish a step in my personal story before crashing, which starts as lag, where my skills kinda swirl but don’t actually activate. My temps are in the 50s and 60s across the board, so I have no idea what is causing this. My drivers are up to date, and everything…
Lagging in WvW, sPvP, and PvE, and usually the lag last like 5 seconds, if it last more than 10 it is followed by being sent to my character screen….
Hgh build is a bit nuts, and can be called op when in a good group. So can anything else… It’s time consuming to set up for most, but nothing a little crowd control can’t handle.
For my engineer, vs thief… It really depends. If I notice you, it’s probably best to just wave and go away. If you are a bad thief but I don’t notice you. You will probably implode. If your a good thief and catch me off guard…. I will just dance and take the beating most timesone I see I’m screwed anyways.
I’ve also tried that approach. It makes me feel like the fat kid in dodgeball…
Wuffles… I’ll hold you to that! I’ll add you when I log on.
Sep, same for me. In gw1 it was assassin… can’t get in to the thief to save my life though.
Assassins were way more complex than the thief is anyway so I can see how you wouldn’t get into it. I think we can sum the thief up in one word; spam.
And the complexity of the engineer is what draws me to it. Good assassins were few and far between from what I saw. But at least in gw1 we had heros and henchmen…
The fastest group I went with was Guardian ele ele mes engi… 3 occasions where the engi saved lives… Not once did the engi need saving. They admitted it was better than expected. Problem is I don’t usually play at the hours they do…
This thread wouldn’t even exist if more people gave a chance.
I know we aren’t useless. The times I have gotten groups, the runs have gone smoothly and quickly. I just can’t seem to find many who will allow me to prove it except in pvp… I always get asked if I have a Guardian or ele… no? Boot.
Tbh my issues aren’t with any mechanics. Everything feels good to me with my build. It’s just all the engi hate is nuts. Depressing even… my main sources of enjoyment are killing other non engi players. ..
Wuffles… I’ll hold you to that! I’ll add you when I log on.
Sep, same for me. In gw1 it was assassin… can’t get in to the thief to save my life though.
Josh said it would happen…. eventually. But the main point is becauseengineers have such a bad Rep I can’t even finish getting my hotw Armor… lucky to get a cof run…. All I can really do is spvp, solo pve, and farm bubbles in sab for something that may not even happen for another year….
I’ve been trying for the past week to get involved with another character… The ONLY thing that comes close to anything near as fun as an engineer, is the mesmer, although the idea of a thief and ranger appeal to me, yet I always find myself going back to my engineer… And I hate it. It isn’t that I am bad at playing it, it isn’t that my damage or survivability is lackluster… I have no problems in those departments… However I am tired of being crapped on because I chose this profession. Or maybe I am just bored of this game… PvE seems completely dead in this game… Finding a group is hard enough without your profession having a bad name for itself… (Yes. I have used the lfg website.)
I think the straw that broke the camels back was the lack of engineer skins from SAB… Not only can I not play with anyone, I can’t “look good” playing with myself either!
Does anyone have any profession or what to do in game suggestions? I absolutely do not want to press 2 as fast as I can, nor do I want to faceroll victories…
That sir, was a far more intelligent response than I could have hoped for. However my debate will continue with this; why am I able to tear people up as an engineer with a tweaked build, but if I was to roll an elementalist or a warrior I wouldn’t be able to beat my own shadow using a self made or meta build? I’ve tried others but none as effective as my current engineer.
I’m not stating it is fact engineers are better either, but trying to express they have the potential to be just as good as anything else.
That is exactly the point we disagree on. If that were solid fact guardians would almost always destroy me, however it’s the other way around in my experience. And unless you want to call the 50+ guardians lives I’ve claimed all bad players that argument is moot… I know I’m not the best, so if a mostly pvp noob is taking out heavy Armor types on such a frequent basis, the argument that engineers suck has not a leg to stand on.
Khrimace, Nope… No idea where that is… afaik Phelan translates in to wolf… lol.
Wuffles, yep, 1v1 a thief is dead MOST OF THE TIME… I’ve died to a few good ones… IF they don’t run away.
