We need more F abilities to better control the pet:
I think Anet sees the ranger as a great starter class, especially since a large amount of the new player population start on ranger but move to something else later on. that being said, a lot of us like the ranger and it’s evident by how many people continue to main this class. there should be a toggle of some sort that would allow for greater pet control for the more experienced player.
permanent stow: I like my pet, i prefer it out but stowing should be available in combat. so many times your stuck in combat because something is on the pet. or trying to stealth in dungeons and the pet doesn’t get it but you cant put him away. damage shouldn’t autotrigger the pet to come out if it’s set to passive. more control for the more experienced player
single target sustain damage:
I don’t think anything can be done about this sadly, without a very heavy class redesign. the game is what defeats our sustain not the ranger we just dont have the burst abilities other have so we’re left lagging in a 15s fight.
pet AI:
we’ve been asking for AI changes for a loooooong time, it isn’t going to happen unfortunately. increasing base pet range would help the melee pets so they hit more often like the birds do. some AI improvements are really needed though.
+1 on everything you said, just my take on it
just toying with the idea a bit, let me know what you think before I test it out after work.
the idea would be to pre-set your spirits out of harms way. there are a lot of ways on this build to get might for both you and the pet but the pet is going to be the important part of your dps. oakheart salve will synergize well with the pulsing regen from water spirit, giving very high regeneration uptime so a high uptime on the 5% dmg reduction. pair that with pulsing protection and proccing protection from the stone spirit for more tankyness.
the combination of condi and power damage should be nice as well.
thanks! /15 char
sylvari as well, you get what is basically an extra entangle
Do the buffs provided by spirits benefit at all from your or your pet’s boon duration?
d/d ele’s are a lot harder in sPvP than in WvW but either way it’s pretty impressive that he gave a cele so much of a hard time. hybrid is probably the best way to go against someone like that since you force them to use their heal/cleanse for either power dmg or condi dmg and then beat them with the other.
at least as far as sPvP is concerned i’m not sure how far that type of build would go against the insane zerk mesmers. might be a good matchup for burn guard tho….
^ a way to get around the root problem that cause your 2 and 3 unresponsive. It basically make the 1 auto attack on demand only, upon pressing. It also reduce the likely hood that you’ll get thrown off the ledge since you can stop your auto attack instantly.
Wow this is awesome thanks
The sword just takes some know-how and practice and I really hope they don’t change it. follow the steps outlined in that post and that’s how you get started learning how to work around the leap.
btw: that leap is pure gold in pvp
rangers are still ok in WVW, not to rain on anyone’s skills as a ranger but it doesn’t take a whole lot to roll with a zerg when everyone’s targeting the same target.
WvW roaming, i can personally feel a big difference here. The big buffs to some classes and the lack of positive ranger changes hurts.
PVE dungeons have been run thousands of times by most every player by now, there’s nothing new here. unless your trying to join a speedrun group anyone can complete a dungeon. pre-patch i’ve had 2 necro’s, a pre patch mesmer, myself on ranger and a guard finish a few together. it’s still not impossible, we just don’t add anything great to the group except spotter and now our damage isn’t as high as the classes who’s meta spot we could take.
some of the people who say ranger is bad want 100b numbers to pop up on screen while some of us want ranger to be a part of the meta, even in a smaller way.
@arenta: head into pvp for a bit and 1v1 a halfway decent mesmer and you’ll see how much we lack condi removal, speed, mobility and damage in comparison to that class. and yes mesmers are a bit broken right now but i have my doubts that this is going to change much.
what’s really disappointing, besides some of the badly thought out or badly placed traits, is that if you go to the thief forum a dev took notice of all the “Q.Q. thief isn’t the best anymore!” threads. They combined them into a single thread and are possibly taking a look at the communities complaints. That just doesn’t seem to happen on the ranger forum.
I need to see what Druid brings tbh, i’ve played ranger almost every hour that i have on this game since beta and I’ve weathered the changes as we’ve always been decent if not the best. If, like jcbroe said, they tone down the mesmer and guardian we’ll be back where we started at least. If not and Druid is lacking in support or damage I’ll be utterly disappointed in anet for not paying the slightest attention to what this class actually needs.
sword takes a whole lot of getting used to plus you have to change some of your settings to get it to work better, i.e turn of auto targeting and something else i don’t recall at the moment, and you will go down faster when fighting multiple enemies since you have no vit or toughness.
condi builds are probably better if your going to fight multiple mobs, you usually get some toughness or vitality in those builds.
edit: also with the new condi changes burn stacks are doing pretty good damage. it just might out dps a pure power build now with the changes.
dead pet bug doesn’t seem to be on the list of ranger bugs in the bug forum, you should add it there.
i’m not sure about MoC and Remorseless stacking but i don’t believe you would get 75% since they are multiplicatively added not additively.
rangers aren’t a primary ranged class…….
power builds are far superior to condition builds when leveling. GS has evades on auto attack to help keep you from being hit, maul and counterattack do great damage and GS#5 sets your pet up for a big hit.
sword AA is our #1 dps no matter what anyone says to the contrary. Math has proven it to be so. sword #2 gets you out of trouble, sword2 and gs3 provide a lot of mobility.
i used WH more often that axe offhand purely because i wanted the swiftness without using up a utility slot for SoTH but that’s a personal choice.
As your leveling it’s a good idea to try out all weapons. LB, GS, S/A are our best power build weapons.
how about ANY ranger build in PvP and being competitive with it.
thanks! i’ll definitely make that trait change. right now i’m running with Rage Runes in exotic zerk gear, will those be as good as FLame Legion or Strength or should I switch over to one of those two. I was kinda bypassing Strength as the PS warrior puts out so much might and they’re everywhere.
when on my ranger i could screw up once and still be standing but on my ele in zerk gear I feel like i down in one hit from most dungeon bosses.
I’m thinking of switching over from maining a ranger, the recent nerfs hurt a lot, and i’m trying to decide between ele, thief and engi. i’m having a lot of fun on ele in silverwastes and dungeons.
as an ele in dungeons I feel really, really squishy. would this modification of the staff ele build still be viable?
any advice you can give would be welcome. I leveled most of my 80’s through eotm and pvp so I have some experience on them, just not much in PVE.

once the nerfbat whacks engi/guard/mesmer/burning dmg the playing field will be a whole lot more level. on the sPVP side I could see ranger being used more. In WvW we’ll still fill the same roles we always have as snipers, in the zerg or roamers.
the one area of the current metagame that we have been lacking in and still do is in the dungeon meta. Clarion Bond would have made us more valuable but that got nerfed. Spirits are really the area that need to be improved to make us part of the meta, mobile or immobile if they gave decent buffs that the team could use the ranger would be valuable.
Axe, in my opinion, is a PVE offhand. it hits pretty hard if you can get it on a player but the animations are easy to tell. warhorn is good for a power build, torch for a condi build and dagger OH can fit in either plus the evades are great for dueling.
most of our traits have potential, they’re just so incredibly underpowered that they become bad. this is one of them. 2-3s of a boon would be good so that boon duration would have some effect. with a 1s boon every 3s you’ll never stack enough + boon duration to actually stack the buffs. frost proccing fury for remorseless synergy would be nice, 1s of fury would help us out more than the party though. resistance on the water or elite spirit would be nice as well.
even just extending the time and changing one of the spirits to fury would provide remorseless And bountiful hunter synergy.
if your in a situation where your pets getting instakilled there isn’t much that can be done. engi’s and mesmers are 1 hitting just about anything right now. if you can swap pets to save them, even if you swap during the shatter but before the pet dies you’ll have a new fresh pet to attack with. cats and birds are super squishy, canines have more toughness and i think more health as well, they just don’t crit as much.
we’re also missing 150 points from the BM line due to a bug(i think), that may help buff the pets up some.
edit: just took a look at your build, why not run MoC instead of brutish seals? you’re not really getting a lot out of that trait with only 1 signet but MoC pairs nicely with the GS.

Some nice ideas there, I like quite a few of them.
I really like prot on evade!Strider’s Defense; “You gain Protection for 2 seconds when you evade an attack while wielding a melee weapon. Your sword skills recharge 20% faster. This trait has an 8s ICD." Primal Reflexes AND some Companion’s Defense synergy.
That would be golden, imo.
I really like this idea, I’d also like to see a trait that increases our sword damage similar to the GS. sword already provides might, vigor might be nice in addition to protection on evade. 2s of a boon isn’t going to break the game or give an unfair advantage.
you can set up a pretty good point holder/brawler using remorseless, this way you can use + toughness + vitality gear in the current meta. Things will change again once the bugs have been fixed and OP classes brought back down to earth.(maybe)
the thing with lowering the ICD is that it’s still only a 50 chance to proc fury so half the time you’ll still be burning the cooldown without actually proccing fury.
no ICD might be too much, we’d get the Clarion Bond nerf within minutes of the first pvp match.
I was theorycrafting on my lunch break and I think I may give this a try when i get home later.
The inciniranger! take advantage of the crazy number of burning stacks a ranger can dish out!
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-J7kF3;1FFy-n2ZDF-0;9V2A;1Z_b;0257137256;41OXFa;1jwmAjwmA2Y
if you can land flame trap, bonfire, throw torch and have your spirit active you should have 14 stacks of burning. the pets cc’s can keep the player in the fire longer and for more stacks per pulse.
it’s just an idea feel free to tear it apart before i get myself killed using it today lol
You know, if you had Axe OH, you could wait till till you used bonfire, swap to the OH axe, flame trap, then WD and you would stack another 24 burns… assuming all hit
You could also do that under the effects of Quickness from QZ or ZS and Quick Draw so you could do it twice. The fire fields stack for combos, so the x12 hits on WD will make 24 stacks of burning in the 1st channel, then another 12 in the 2nd, plus the ones from Bonfire, Sun Spirit, Flame trap… Smoldering Sigil + Balthazar runes.
Edit: maybe like http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-J77Fk;0wEFy-r2BEF-0;9V2R;1Z_a;0246146137;4TwV6E;15NV05NV01u ? I don’t think that would be actually good for PvP, but would stack a ton of burns.
you know, i was thinking about that too lol the burn stacks would be insane and you could swap the dagger for the axe pretty easily. the only thing you’d lose out on is the extra condi dmg while on axe.
it wouldn’t have been easy before, it’s about impossible now. too many classes can burst too high at the moment.
this made me LoL

Frost-Spotter is really the best option for a dungeon/fractal build. you should be able to find the older version on metabattle if it hasn’t been updated yet and DnT has already put out a video on it.
also i think it’s on the list of builds as well.
its hard to fight right now , too many Bugs.. aim for 2600-2800 toughness , 2-3 Cav gear will fix that.
If you aren’t going full zerk you need to make sure to add some vitality along with the toughness. Condi damage is insane right now, I had an ele stack 12 burning on me in a couple seconds last night.
This. warriors are hitting really hard right now, ele’s burning stacks hurt bad, mesmers shatter burst is also pretty rough. i’m running sentinels with SoS, SoR and EB, it gives 3.2k armor and 28k health and if i’m fighting more than 2v1 i get crushed pretty quickly.
at least cut the ICD in half, fury can be pretty powerful and other than Forceful GS the other GS weapon skills don’t seem that game changing.
What happened to the all ranger guild that was around on the forums for a while? still active? I’m in a good 100% rep guild so i didn’t join previously but with HoT if i can talk ranger-y stuff with other rangers without having to rep i’d join.
we were getting it every pet swap it had no recharge originally but this was how they fixed a tonic exploit
edit: with Windborne Notes traited you still have a 24s ICD, still lame.
Was nice while it lasted… now to choose between the other two for PVE.
The nerf is ridiculous, 30s ICD! really! 9-12 would have been acceptable but 30s basically makes it worthless
you won’t see the condition duration change in your hero panel it would only affect the conditions you apply. a 10% increase wouldn’t amount to very much change if that’s your only source of +duration
BM Condition bunker
http://intothemists.com/calc/?build=-JF37k;1FVu-d2gEF-0;9k11;1ba_;0057237136;4U7Z710;0jwmAjwmA9w
very tank, a decent amount of regen. i’ve tested a bit in pvp and although it doesn’t have a lot of killing power I can 3v1 for a few minutes waiting for a +1 to take down enemies. it does have some trouble against high condi spike if SoR is on CD.
thoughts?
watchknight tonic works
where you traited in BM when you tested this? if not that would a nice cooldown reduction on the heal. Moa heals should be right up there as well.
That’s a pretty significant heal, the only build i could really see using it well would be a BM bunker though.
If you don’t like the pet on a pet class, why play a ranger??
this is what i’m thinking for pve dungeons/fractals
SotW could be swapped for SnR for pugs or Gaurd when you need a stun break.
still testing pvp builds, I made a side control build that held up against and ele, guard and thief for a few minutes and dmg is good from the pet.
You have a couple character slots to play with when you start as well. try a few things out and see what fits. Ranger, to me, is a fun class to play. I have each profession at 80 but i still only play my ranger.
where any calculations done on the comparison between rampagers and sinister using a hybrid weapon like SB or A/x? I know i’m curious as to which one will have the better dps and then compare that to zerk.
edit: whether using rampagers, sinister or zerk gear should we be using zerk trinkets to pump up the crit dmg somewhat?
I’ll take here my idea from my other thread, tweak it a bit and say:
“While at or under 50% hp, you gain 1 stack of might for 8 sec. every second and 3 seconds of fury every 2 seconds.”
Just for the synergy with Remorseless you know.
i’d consider this over quickdraw, even if it where only 1 application of fury for 3s.
the might stacks could be front loaded more, like 4 stacks once you’re at or under 50% + 1 stack per second for 8 seconds + 3 sec of fury.
It seems kind of OP but considering we’re almost dead how bad could it be?
If your speccing into BM you can take go for the eyes for another +300 toughness
Natural Regeneration heals the pet and the ranger.(edit: the tooltip is wrong and has been for some time now)
SotW heals pet and ranger
the SotW trait heals the pet and ranger
Invigorating Bond is an AoE heal
Any thoughts on if zerk is still going to be the go to gear set for PVE rangers? the same goes for ranger runes vs scholar runes. Maths will have to be done once the patch actually hits and things are more permanent. If axe or sb did more direct damage i could see rampagers competing with zerk for best dps.
true, i’m way more curious about the combo than the the trait in any way lol. basically the same as I am about LoYF, as it stands it’s just not good enough to see real use.
Poison master could stay there or go into skirmishing, Empathic Bond should probably be in BM.
MDG makes no sense as it is, 8+ seconds is a long time to be below 50% health. Also it’s hard to plan around a trait that only kicks in if your getting your butt kicked. adding in the new resistance(?) boon would be great so condi’s wouldn’t tick once you drop below 50%.
I kind of like LoYF but i don’t get the shortbow buff other than that it’s a skirmishing type weapon. a sword buff along with a strider’s defense sword buff would have been awesome.
invigorating bond is garbage. it needs to heal for double the amount to even be considerable. besides why take that when you can use HaO, TU or just Natural Regeneration.
edit: with the improved pet stats + Natural regeneration buffing healing power, would that make the invigorating bond heal worthwhile?
please don’t feed the trolls
It is unkind and unnecessary.
can’t down a thief? 1.8k per hit???? l2p.
/drops mic
i’m out.
