Nope. Played D/D since release. Loved and still do but it cannot compete with the myriad of cheese builds out there. So I switched to PewPew Overlord.

DD thief got some good setups VS ranger.
Just using Dark Blossom when rapid fire is incoming and you negate 3/4 of it. Or daggerstorm (sure, not really DD, but still).
For thieves, slotting Smoke Screen will be “somewhat” mandatory. However smoke screen completely shuts down LB, regardless of range. It also allow you to leap throuh it for stealth, thus you can with ONE utility and ONE HS, completely shut down a ranger.

rangers ARE pretty much useless in 1v1 against any enemy that has a gap closer. They are much more deadly than before at sitting off points and pew pewing than before, that’s about all they got in terms of buffs. To say they “excel” in 1v1 is just not true at all. They don’t really excel in anything….except pew pew
longbow nabs perhaps, try fight a condition bunker or BM spec. Please return here when you can “faceroll” those setups ONE VERSUS ONE. And not FIVE VERSUS ONE.

hey, i want to introduce you to this cool concept calls “changing utilities out of combat to that of something else then back again”.
Here is how it works;
Step 1 – summon spirit
Step 2 – complete the fight
Step 3 – Once out of combat, change to a different spirit utility then change back to the original spirit utility to desummon former spirit
Step 4 – wait for cooldown
Step 5 – summon spirit again
Step 6 – repeat step 1 through 5 as many times as neccessary.

IMO, there is two solutions for spirits (if we are to keep the current system)
A: Make spirits invulnerable but last only X seconds (like moving warrior banners)
B: Make spirits destructible but last until destroyed (like pets)

Dadnir – its been working this way since forever.
It activates once per F2, not per attack.
So spiders, depending on # venom uses could get from 1 to 3 applications of cripple. Devourers can get even more then that. HOWEVER, devourers are horrible pets, their F2 is weak and does little damage. There is 3-4 pets which fully utilizes this trait. Its the chill and AOE effect pets. That would be snow leopard, owl, krytan drakehound, alpine wolf, black bear, polar bear…. these pets are truly strong with that trait, because they apply 2x CC rather then just 1x cripple. Meaning an owl will give you maximum negative movement (i think the cap for max negative movement is -75 to -80%, Cripple + chill seem to slightly stack, but not all the way up to -116% as one may think)

Is not so much their rapid fire, but their stupidly strong autoattack. All long, medium, and short range, they are all too strong. Im not too opposed to keeping the long range damage “similar” to what it was before, but the medium and short range needed no buff. They should have stayed the same or have been nerfed actually.
There is no reason for autoattacks on any class to hit 2-3k on average. Thats broken. Especially for a skill that is an autoattack and fires so fast.

By the way, where did you come up with that number? I can do 2k+ auto attacks on every profession in this game with the right weapon. So if every profession is equally “broken”, as you claim, what is the problem?

Actually I have leveled all professions to 80 within the first 6 months of release. My rangers is probably 4th or so on my list of time I play it. It is not a matter of rangers running to defend there profession. As I see it, it is the informed running to educate the uninformed. For example, complaining that a auto attack damage level is over powered, when it is a level that any profession can obtain on an auto attack, seems very uneducated to me.
autoattacks that hit that hard are broken, at least when they do at nearly every range. other professions can hit that hard if they are full glass but not at every range, only ranger. its the combination of speed, damage, and distance that make the autoattack over powered. one of them needs to be nerfed.
I didnt’ say rangers are overpowered either, they are not. its just certain aspects of the longbow that are. rifle damage is very similar to longbow, in some ways, but there are many reasons why its not viable. the hardest hitting skill that you will consistently land on rifle is volley. the autoattack is awful in damage, unlike the ranger longbow autoattack. killshot and rapid fire are comparable in damage except one is so predictably easy to dodge wihle the other can still hit you for around 2 arrows after you dodge the beginning of it.
Mesmer GS auto says hello. I was also told to say “hi” from Warrior Rifle, Engineer Rifle and Elementalist Staff. Granted, only engineer and warrior got a set of skill(s) that reaches 1800 range, like trait LB does. However their auto damage is as high, if not higher, at ALL ranges. Not just maxed out.
also, Skylightmoon, if you have issues with ranger LB pounding you to death at short range (IE: less then 600) – you gotta learn to play. Below that range, longbow is a suicidal weapon that even the best rangers struggle to use efficienctly.
Wanna cry about ranger DPS?
Check your combat log next time a zerker sword ranger + might stacked pet with quickness wails at you. Then you know what real ranger DPS is like.

What Healing Spring could use is direct heal rather then regeneration.
A sort of “Initial Self Heal” + “healing pr Pulse”…. the regen is “nice”, but total duration is lower then a single shout’s regen is.
Troll Unguent should be a survival skill indeed.
Heal as One being a shout would be cool, but if they just reduced the CD to 15 seconds with 0.75-1 sec cast time rather then 1.5 sec cast time, i would be content.

Anyone else notice a lot more stealth raises of Keep lords in protracted fights? Funny how one thing gets killed and something else pops up in its place.
If only Search and Rescue didnt get rekt a year ago then rangers coulda filled that spot T-T….
Still, its all related to darwins law – Survival of the fittest. When warriors don’t work, use the second most effective (aka hard to prevent) thing.

There is 3 factors that makes rangers particularily strong underwater:
Their healing (which is mostly chunks over time through Troll Unguent)
Their Damage in relation to other professions (Spear damage is close to that of warrior hammer on land)
And lastly, the pet being a strong healer. Most pets underwater also got quite good sustain.
How to beat rangers underwater;
CC them A LOT
Kill pet FAST. If that pet is alive, you won’t win. If ranger swaps, kill the other pet. Unless the ranger is BM (few are), you should be able to kill that pet quite fast.
Apply poison on the pet and stack CC on ranger so it cannot reach the surface.

- A group of 10 or more players may vote to dismantle a siege weapon. They do this by each getting on the weapon and using a new “dismantle” skill on it. A dismantled weapon will distribute 50%(balance this return as you see fit, down to 0) of its supply cost to all nearby players once enough votes are in. If a weapon is dismantled inside a structure it will provide this return to the structure’s stockpile instead (balance this as you see fit too, to prevent “storing” supply in siege weapons).
best idea ive seen so far. Sure this again can lead to further trolling by dismantling siege then building new ones and as thus continuously drain supply. Still need LOTS of players to do this…. catching 10 trolls is easier then 1….

ok so um yea, lol at the people giving literal definitions of the word ranger, especially considering I am one of those definitions (army ranger for almost 10 years now) however since when has anything in the gaming world ever been a literal translation? In every single game you will find on the market, a ranger is a RANGED specialist, that is their BEST weapon set, sure they can be played other ways especially in games that allow rangers to use other weapons than bows, but their ranged attacks will always outshine other weapons. however, thanks for the troll comments, it shows an obvious lack of intelligence, and a severe need for attention. the point of this thread was to emphasize the point that rangers are not ridiculously OMG OP, because they finally got a buff to their ranged skills, their melee still trumps that which is just silly. if I wanted to be a warrior, guardian, thief, I woulda picked that to begin with. not play a ranger and get stuck with melee as an only real means of survival and damage output.

There’s also the fact that once the backstab is done, the thief is left in 130 range of the guy he downed, which might very well be in very close proximity to the rest of his friends so he needs some escape plan.
Hey, i recently found out thieves got this awesome skill called Shadowstep. Guess what!!!?! It instantly teleports them up to 1200 units away. What does this mean?
I’ll reveal that just for you, my friend.
It means that the thief is out of melee range and can stealth freely to reset fight. Or instantly teleport back to perform one of their signature bug abusing stomps.

yeah reflect have long cooldowns, but if u manage to reflect a rapid fire only once, im gonna eat at least 50% of my health cuz im full glass cannon too.
You must be really good, because when I get my attacks reflected I either dodge roll or cancel immediately, taking only 1-2 arrows, then down them after 7 seconds or so, which is basically when rapid fire is off CD again.
I play a ranger too. The issue is not how much damage it dishes out, but how very, very, very easy it is to do it.
The class was never a joke, its just not a lot of people, at least the ones that voice their opinions about it, really knew how to play it well.
perhaps I should have said “up to 50%” because of how fast rapid fire is, when its being reflected, its pretty kitten difficult to instantly tell if its getting reflected, and because Im full glass, (full ascended zerker everything) even 3-4 arrows of it will do up to 8K to me. try telling a distortion/mirror on mesmer from 1500 away with RTW and QZ——- all you’ll see is arrowtrails going both ways instantly. Or a missile deflection shield/sword warrior.
Wall of reflection, swirling winds, magnetic aura, daggerstorm – those are easy to tell

Today, my drake has 13K less health and my wolf has 7K less than yesterday – only in WvW. Anybody else notice this?
Pets have 74.8% more HP in PvE then in WvW and PvP. This is probably why it seemed like it had less health.

well you answered yourself now, you need to invest in means to make 100b viable, sPvP is no where like PvE, no one will stand in your melee 100b unless you force them to.
Rapid fire in comparison is light years more effective no need to use an utility for it.

rapid fire is only 1500 range, if you are 1500 range away. 100b is 100b no matter where you are.
IE: you require UP TO 15 SECONDS to set up a “RF NUKE”, because you gotta MOVE, physically, in a build with limited mobility, to a place far away.
Also, those who argue GS is hard to get close with…. get a grip. Mobile Strikes + GS 3 and GS 5- Bam, instantly in the rangers face. Swap to axe shield, shield bash into evis, BAM instantly DEAD RANGER.
It is a rotation that takes 6 seconds to set up and execute from start to end…. Thats how much sustain the ranger got. 6 seconds, maybe 12 if signet of stone were used. Or 18 if we add Protect Me ontop of that again. Still, that is 18 seconds of “existence” at the price of 64 + 60 seconds cooldown.
Balanced? Yes.
Oh and before you all jump the gun and scream bias – i do play a warrior, quite often actually.

another good thing about this change is that it opens up another aspect of Ele play. Playing an staff ele myself, i will test out Stone Heart (cannot be critically hit while in earth). Rapid fire without crits is really really weak (only 3.8-4.5k damage)…. Having the ability to negate almost 5k damage from ONE trait, in addition to being able to return damage through magnetic shield.
As a ranger player, i am looking forward to seeing more 22222 spammers. It will feed my kill-count, and get me some kills to.

to be honest, thief DO need a revamp. Pre patch, they were fodder for good rangers, engineers and guardians (couldn’t kill em, or died trying to hard). Now, they are just fodder.
I played some PvP, but i try not to play LB/GS anymore. It has gotten too much attention, thus you get focused too fast, too often. I still notice that what was manageable for a thief pre patch, simply destroy them in milliseconds now. They got no counter unless the stars align.
As for next feature pack. I hope thieves get a better buff, i love my PP venom thief to death. It’s “fun”, but at the same time, very unrewarding.
Personally, as a ranger main, i do enjoy the buffs i got to my most beloved profession, however one thing i do miss. And that is the synergy between the medium professions. It is no longer there. Previously, you had engineer as the AOE condition applier, Thief as the spike damage and ranger as the bunker. They were quite distinct in that department. Ranger with its evades, regeneration and the split in DPS allowing it to specialize while not suffering too much. Engineer with its grenades and elixir gun…. now engineer is the bunker, ranger is still a solid bunker, but a much better spiker and thief, well, a squishy class that tries to be a condition bunker, but it has no basis as to succeed in that role.
As for the changes needed to thief; make traps go away, give the KD trap to rangers as an elite option. They would make good use of it.Then give thieves a sort of “mark”.
My idea would be; Apply mark – countdown starts, if thief has not been pushed out of range (say 900 to make things fair) or been downed, you take massive damage, get stunned for a long time, is chilled, lifesteal, condition + boon transfer…. stuff like that. Stuff that would be scary, but have distinct and reasonable counterplay even for less skilled players.

Post Patch Hard/Software Problem: Lack of quality control. Several “near game breaking” bugs appeared. The performance changes was, to many, a 180 degree turn for the worse causing more lag, more instability and more frustration.
Post Patch Balance issues: While the attempt to further increase build diversity was a nice one, it did ruin or outright remove some builds on several professions. This is counter intuitive and in the future, such changes should be more carefully weighed up against the “increase” in diversity.
Post Patch Player Base Problem:
This one pertains to the Ranger updates in particular. The player base has “taught itself” that “Rangers suck, and will always be outdone by others”. This patch, they realized perhaps they do not suck. The community as a whole must learn how to adapt before crying wolf, if not, the real wolf will be on the prowl unnoticed.

actually if you do a FULL stack, FULL bloodlust + BL Bloodlust (3) Zerker ranger, with signets and the right pet, your rapid fire can IN THEORY, if everything hits, crits and procs, deal 21.2k. On a full glass light armor class that is.
That is considering EVERY HIT deals its maximum crit damage (around 1.7k) + air fire proc and 5 stacks of might.
Now, you cannot test this damage in HotM because you cannot get guard stacks, bloodlust and BL bloodlust all at once. But i did do the math (very roughly) and thanks to 3x 10%, 1x 5%, 1x 25% boosters we can reach these numbers.
However the cost for pulling this off is blowing EVERY COOLDOWN KNOWN TO MANKIND. Resulting in the easiest kill known to WvW roamers short of armor-less uplevels.
In short. Rapid fire is amazing, In contrast – Maul (Greatsword #2) can hit for OVER 33k when set up right…. so well, nothing special with RF and ranger having insane spike damage.
EDIT: likelihood of this sort of RF ever landing on you is 10 in 10 squared.

Anet why did you just OVERBUFFED the longbow.. is that your way of making rangers a populair class again? you just overbuff them so you make sure it the next OP class and people like it…
all i see now in pvp AND wvw are longbow rangers spamming from MILES away with insane fast BULLETS doing 2K+ auto attacks (and fast!!) and a FULL 100b skill on 1500 range and 3x faster..
Ow you can dodge it!! what!?? i dodge 1 rapid fire they spam away with GS and do it all over again..
Atleast for most burst skills you have to do something to even LAND your burst… or you have to be in MELEE range making yourself vulnerable.. this is just madness..
Creating a ranger now also for wvw.. spamming AA > knockback > rapid.. > stealth > block with GS en leap away > AA > knockback > rapid.. > repeat > repeat

And burst recharge can be reduced to only 7.75 seconds, not 7 seconds.
I believe the famous Hambow is enough.

in one way, rangers got hit pretty hard PvE wise, with the loss of frost spirit. It now gives 70% chance to grant 10% more damage every 10 seconds. Which is like 0.7-1% increase in overall DPS for party, rather then 10% as before.
So while ranger got a great new trait that boosts its damage, it also lost its second most significant party buff.

Did you know that meteor shower with blasting staff trait reaches 1380 range for some reason, and that meteor can deal 5-7k to my glassy warrior. And if i try to close gap i gotta run through a aoe that is huge and lasts long…..

Depending on spec, ranger is by far a better facetanker then thief thanks to lore stability access, more CC, slightly more evades and an incomparable healing ability.
If you do not want to run glasscannon, then regen ranger (condi or power, both are viable) will outlast all but 2x glass thieves focusing you.

IMO it is hard to avoid running a signet ranger for the LOL effect. Popping Hunt or Wild signets followed by an attack chain is just fun. I went full glass with piercing last night. One ranger is annoying… four or five us were tearing the front lines up. Course one reflection skill and ouch!

Great is very relative. Mesmer… check. Thief… check. Warrior… check. Everything else… gets caught too easily. Especially a medi-guardian. It is like playing a might stacking warrior with none of the escape skills. Awesome fun to bomb people though.

Also, piercing + Read The Wind, Quickening Zephyr, Rampage as one and wild – instant multikill. Noone will be able to react to 1.5 second burst

RF CD, Damage (total damage, not Dmg per Sec) is the same really. Nothing changed in that regard.
Prior to the patch in 5s a player could do 1 RF and that is it. Now they can do 1 RF and 3 base attacks which can be almost 20% more damage. That is a big jump in overall damage during the same interval. This also triggers more “hits” for more proc chances. Then there is the significantly better burst and DPS from RF. Don’t even get me started on how halfing the channel on that skill makes Quick Draw better.
So in the real world, the RF change was a substantial buff. I used to be able to skip to a ranger while he was firing that. Now Rangers can channel that skill, fire a knockback and cloak in less time than the old skill. That is a BIG change to both short term DPS, total damage and survival for a LB Ranger in the same time frame.
Good for roaming… I still say no. Fun novelty in a group setting, absolutely.
It would be good for pressure.

Normally we get into over the Ranger comments but in this case you are right. I apparently have been imitating a pincushion since the patch went out. I was having fun on my glassy D/D thief pre-patch but went back to the warrior post patch since RF is so spammable now. Rapid Fire is the devil… THE DEVIL!
RF CD, Damage (total damage, not Dmg per Sec) is the same really. Nothing changed in that regard.
People seem to think there were some kind of ninja buff to rangers. No, it was not. Everything they did to LB was give more damage to middle and close range on AA (which is something it needs for realz, but getting into melee with LB is bad either way)
, they decreased cast time (reduced the time it takes for the skill to channel) of rapid fire by 2 seconds (rangers could already fire this fast pre patch by using quickening Zephyr, a utility skill with 60 second CD) and they reduced barrage cast time by 1/2 a second (so we are slightly less dead when trying to channel it).
I hope the noob rangers go away from WvW soon. Ill wait some 2-3 months before i do any more serious roaming, this is due to the fact that atm, everyone is going berserk and trying desperately to hard counter a simple PvE build. Either way, this is not the time for serious roaming with LB ranger. Too many are gonna focus you.

If ranger got their burst on greatsword, No one would be complaining, at all.
The problem is not the damage multiplier, but the 1800 range (longbow hits clearly further than 1500 range if you have eagle eye traited). Unless you have multiple reflects, stealth or shadowsteps most professions do not have much counter play against this. Multiple rangers focus firing on one opponent will down anybody before they can close in without the use of stealth, shadow step, reflect or similar. Just dodging is avoiding only part of the rapid fire burst. LB #4 can be used to gain range and so does GS#3.
While this maybe be fun for rangers now to down the enemy warriors who were treating them like 2nd class citizens, I don’t think this is good for the game balance. The range of all long bow attacks (with eagle eye trait) should be reduced to 1500 (like it reads).
actually, the damage multiplier for LB2 is horrible. its 0.37986 per arrow, or something close to that. What causes the massive damage is having 6 points into marks, giving us instant 20 stacks of vulnerability DURING the cast. Thus we deal almost 20% more damage then normally.
Take a ranger without any points in marks and BAM, RF isnt that strong anymore.

I used to like sPvP. Rank 39. Now I die almost instantly every fight I enter. I suppose if you are killing people instantly its “fun” for you, but frankly this isn’t a good change. PvP should entail strategy and fights that last more than a couple seconds.
Come on Anet, fix this – make it a fun game for everyone please.
so, following your definition of “fun”…. watching a regen ranger and medi guard duke it out for over an hour would be fun?
because i did that with a mediguard (was a private arena, so no time limit)…. IT WAS NOT FUN. It was stupid pride getting in our way. Guess what happened? 1 hour 12 minutes in, we shook hands and agreed NEVER to duel with those setups again.
If you die in less then 1 second to any glasscannon, be it ranger or backstab thief or KS warrior, you yourself is not good enough to counter these builds. Thus you yourself is “removing the fun”.
Do you think i enjoy rolling a glassbow ranger and pewpew people in 1 sec flat? No, its boring and i wish they would leave PvP so some real enemies could be queued up with me.
What i want as a glassbow LB/GS ranger is someone or something with 2 braincells, able to fight me head on and give me a run for my money. Yet you know what? Iv’e yet to find anyone.
My build has not changed, the damage output has NOT changed. It is absolutely the same. Sure i can deal more of my damage faster then before, but not more damage in one attack.
People haven’t realized, god knows how, that rangers could do this exact thing, FOR TWO YEARS ALREADY. They never bothered to take notice or even care. This is your own arrogance and ignorance that has come to bite you.

Warrior is still the best all-around class imo, but each patch they’re nerfed which can be annoying as a player.
Specifically to Ranger:
Dungeons: The greatsword changes helped boost the damage of the weapon up above 1h sword and the class overall does more damage. On the downside, the only real value to the group was nerfed (bug?). So as a selfish DPSr, the Ranger is pretty good now. For utility and maximizing a group? Pretty useless.
WvW: RF has made power builds deal considerable burst damage, but given ANet’s track record, it will likely be nerfed. Like Dungeons, the class has no group value whatsoever. On top of this, the defensive options for the class are far too focused on dueling so the class is trained down easily and is useless in GvG’s still. Roaming as condi is likely going to remain the meta for Rangers once the longbow changes settle down some, but power will be more valuable roaming as well.
PvP: Power is good for soloQ but the lack of group utility is still going to hold the class back. Condi Rangers will likely make a comeback but things are too new to tell.
Now with that all said, I would suggest you just make one of each and play a bar in PvP with each of them. After 10-20 games you’ll get a feel for the class’s playstyle and if you enjoy playing it or not. If you enjoy playing the class, you’ll likely enjoy the class regardless of its relative power.

Those 10% on the 3rd rotation brings it close, but since sword has cripple on AA, IE – 100% uptime of Predators Onslaught, sword has 15% more DPS then before (counting in the fact that its cripple also boosts pet)….
So no, GS is not above sword DPS by any margin what so ever.
