Random timers for boss events

Rash.6514

Are you kidding? They should do the exact opposite. Oh how I wish the world bosses had in-game trackable timers so we knew exactly when they are available.

These world bosses and how they were implemented (you don’t have to be in a party to participate) is truly one of the most amazing things I’ve seen on a MMO genre that honours the first “M” on the acronym. I truly love them. Every time when I join a battle in progress, I stop a while to wonder the amazing amount of projectiles and effects being thrown at the boss. It is just beautiful.

So, instead of requesting the game to be less massive, why not suggest ANet to buff the bosses so their fights would last longer? Or, perhaps, suggest ANet to tune the bosses difficulty scaling closer to the amount of players on the area? But, anyway, what is the server you play on? Mine with a “Very High” population has none of that problem. Perhaps with the exception of Maw, which is the most crowded event.

I agree on the dungeons topic. And it could be solved so easily by simply implementing an easy mode (less rewards), hard mode (more rewards) choice on the dungeon. They already have paths, and ANet could simply design the paths to do it (easier and harder paths). I believe this is already somehow implemented on the game, they should just make it clearer which path is easier and which is harder.

Why are classes so hit-and-miss?

Are you kidding? I love a healer Engineer on my party. It is just that maybe most people don’t “get” one class as much as the others. Warriors, for example, have very limited party buffs compared to Mesmer, Necro and even Engineers themselves. To each, its own.

I think what is wrong with this game is that many dungeon exploits and hacks that require a certain setup of classes to work out. I’ve been called for some of them, it is just sad.

But honestly — and I mean no offense — it gets really tiring having other people proclaim what kind of game I should or shouldn’t play. I have no problem with you (or anyone, for that matter) disagreeing with me, but the old “maybe this game isn’t for you” argument is pretty thin.

Sorry, no offense but this is my turn. These guys are right. This is a massive MULTIPLAYER online game, you are supposed to play with other players (people). I am not saying you should play other games. But I am saying you SHOULD NOT try to modify a well established game genre to your needs. There are other games, not online, not multiplayer, where you can call any amount of NPCs to play with you. Guild Wars 2 is just not one of these.

As far as the personal stories go, these NPCs are already there. You don’t control them, but they are there playing with you, when needed. The personal story instances were designed to be completed solo, so if you can’t, then you might be doing something wrong. Yes, games can be hard too! Now, it is not because in this game you can party up with other players that you should be asking for henchmen on personal stories. Can you imagine how ridiculous it would be if you went to Sony’s forum ask for henchmen on God of War, for example?

dungeon finder?

I find that it works better than WoW’s dungeon finder to be honest.

So not true. WoW will assemble a party with all roles filled, a mix of melee/ranged DPS and will even give you some reward if your role is heavily required. Fortunately, GW2 doesn’t have roles, so they might simply balance melee/range DPS. It would be simply awesome to have that tool. Really looking forward to it.

Now, I also agree that the dungeons should be fixed. I’m getting tired of jumping to forbidden places, going through fake walls (a wall which you can go through), jumping to stupid places, and so on.

I wouldn’t mind the option, though I think the human race of Tyria is portrayed as highly civilized. I don’t see them sporting body markings personally.

That what you said is so not cool…

I think games (specially fantasy MMOs) shouldn’t be an exact portrait of reality. Honestly, I like the Norn because I like the real nordic people, but I wouldn’t mind if they were all different. Like Norns shouldn’t necessarily have a nordic look, architecture, language/names, etc, I honestly don’t think others should have as well (like canthans to asians, elonians to africans) on a fantasy game. This is what makes the Asuran, Silvary and Charr races so cool (with some exceptions). This plague seems to permeate every MMO, even those with different races, they still try to “resemble” a real civilization. So, I guess, I am the wrong one.

Rash.6514

I am not really sure how ANet could help with that. You gave some suggestions but I honestly fail to see how they would “fix” this. I believe ANet wants the Guilds to be some sort of a community, more than the server. This is why they are pushing towards guild events. On my server there is an “alliance” of guilds, which I think is pretty cool.

The problem I see (and, again, I don’t think it is ANet’s fault, it is in every MMO) is that people don’t usually want to do the things I want to do. I love PvE content, so every once in a while I spam LFG on my guild’s chat for dungeons and World Bosses (I love them). I can hardly close a 5-man group 100% guildmates (of a ~100 online members) because they all want to do something else. Usually, WvW. So, yes, WvW is really a successful community. Sometimes I go there and see this sea of names in yellow/gold, I think it is pretty cool. Other than that, what you described is a problem on every MMO.

As for my third bullet, I thought it was fairer to give that suggestion, however I don’t completely agree with it. I think the precursor should be a certain drop (100% chance) of a VERY hard boss in the game. One that would really require skill to defeat. I am not talking about Arah P4. I am not saying a long and winding road to a boss. I am saying a KITTEN (I wrote that myself, it wasn’t replaced by the forum) HARD boss fight, like a challenge. Something along the lines of the Doppelganger mission on Guild Wars 1, but even harder.

Like you should be Ascended (in GW1 it was the players, not the items), you should prove you are worthy of getting your precursor. (It could be part of an optional personal story quest line, afterall getting the legendary should be part of your story)

I’ve got a proposition for you OP and friends (who don’t seem to know what a game is).

  • Make CoF 1 harder
  • (Slightly) Increase coin drop for all enemies in the game
  • Increase/decrease the drop chance of a precursor based on the demand and supply of these items on Trading Post, so not to ruin the economy and give all players the exact same chance to craft legendaries
  • Improve the loot of all hardened bosses in dungeons (chance for extra tokens, chance for exclusive skins, chance to get extra coins, chance to get Globs, exotic crafting materials, etc)

This game essentially has one traditional quest, the personal story.

Thank God! Or better yet, Thank ANet! I hate questing. I think hearts give enough fun to do on that area and that is it. If you are trying to tell a story through questing, then the personal story is the way to do it. It is shaped by your choices, it creates an instance of the world specifically for you, none of that is possible through traditional questing. It is perfect.

Other than that, any other “secondary” quests are simply a bunch of kill X of Y or bring me X of Y. In that case, the hearts make perfect sense. So you are helping a bunch of Asurans who are studying something somewhere but they are being attacked by skales. You don’t need a quest for that. You just happen to be on the region and you decide you’ll help the Asuran team. So it is a local event. Perhaps you are complaining that there are no dialogs for “helping the Asurans”, that is true. But the story behind every Heart is sent to you by mail. Maybe ANet could change it so you had to talk to the Heart NPC to complete the Heart. Maybe, but I honestly wouldn’t want ANet to deviate much from that.

The Hearts are the very first model I’ve seen that breaks from the traditional questing from other MMOs. Kudos for doing something new.

You could login to the game and say “Ok, now I wanna do FoW with my Warrior” or “Today I feel like playing TA with my Mesmer” or “I guess Im going do a Vanquish with my SoS Rit”.

That is perfect logic, and I agree with you. But as you said yourself on the previous post, people need things to do. I have heard this many times already and I am a fairly young player (since January 2013).

Me: LFM Arah P2 / P3
Me: No one?
Someone: What is the point?
Me: ??? To get the tokens? Or help me get them?
Someone: Why don’t you just craft an exotic armor and use your time to get precursors?

Obviously, that is not everybody. But the fact that the game can give you anything you want quite easily and fastly does not motivate other people for enjoying the content. Unfortunately that is a mentality that ANet can’t avoid, not even with Manifestos. So between keeping their word and looking at the numbers of players that quit playing with the excuse they are bored because they have nothing to do, they choose the latter. Like every company that cares for their existence, they HAVE TO choose the side of the money.

In a grandmaster-type quest for instance, you have a full-length story. Usually the quest involves talking to many different characters to gain clues about the mission. It can include puzzles to be solved in order to gain access to hidden rooms. The dialogue tends to be a lot more interesting because the storyline is developed over the course of the quest.

You are describing the personal story. Anything else you miss belonged to a different MMO, which I am fine if ANet is trying to develop their own thing and doesn’t copy others.

I have NEVER said I don’t like the skirts. I was just asking for variety, that is all. And I am using the license that the game has to simply ignore reality. If we are going to get into that matter, then most gear here wouldn’t be able to look the way they do simply because there wouldn’t be a possible motion of arms (and probably legs) to make it work.

I’ve said this on the other forums, if you don’t like SAB, avoid it. But asking to remove it because you paid for the game and it “violates” you is too kitten much. I don’t care whether SAB goes or stays, but given you post I may look like I am petitioning for it to stay (and I am definitely NOT).

When you get to the ‘gothic’ architecture, it’s a style that was common in Europe and Russia alike. So yeah, there is a German influence with names but most of it isn’t the visual aesthetic of that region of Cantha.

Look, I don’t want to extend this conversation because I believe we’re getting off topic here. So, to wrap it up, first there is Gothic art everywhere, even in Latin America, so saying that there was Gothic art in Russia doesn’t mean anything. The Goths were a Germanic tribe from the north of Europe and their culture and their art was spread to the rest of the world. However, the architectural style appeared in France.

http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/mgot/hd_mgot.htm

Basically all the Kurzick style is gothic with some eastern Europe influence and a lot of ANet’s own creation. Several of the Kurzick and Luxons NPCs do look asian, but I guess this is mostly due to the characterization of the whole region in the game.

I don’t care what definition we use as long as it is recognized that there can exist a group of people can both care about ascended gear and find daily’s to be a terrible chore.

But you can never please everyone. If you have played other MMOs, you’ll realize that ANet’s dailies are much less grindy than others. Certainly, a lot less compulsory as well. If you care about Ascended gear, you can also get them on Fractals (which may help you with certain dailies anyway).

I believe what Tolunart said, and he is right, is that the feeling of “I must do dailies everyday” is in your head, not in the game. Even if you care so much for the ascended gear, even if you are hardcore, this is just a game. And any needs you feel towards it is in your head and can be diagnosed as a disorder depending on the level of it. ANet has just created one mechanism, a game feature, not a disease. In that sense, I don’t think dailies hurt those who know how do deal with it, so asking to remove it just because you don’t like it seems a little self-centrism.

As far as SAB goes, I probably won’t be a frequent customer. But as I said, it is nice when you just want to do something different. GW1 had some pet battles with the Asura, I don’t remember how it was called. It was released just before I quit playing it. It was also very different from the rest of the game play (like the Heroes battle) and I also considered a mini-game.

I have read on a post made by an ANet employee that most people wouldn’t waste their time coming here to say they like something. That they would instead just enjoy the content. Well, this is true so I decided I should give some positive feedbacks.

SAB is really nice. Obviously, like anything in the real world, it is impossible to please everyone. So it is OK not to enjoy SAB and what it represents. Personally, I think it is a nice break from the rest of the game. I love mini-games. I really enjoy when creative minds extend a concept so much that they create something almost entirely different with it. Even if the concept is a game’s engine. For instance, I really like game mods (how many cool games today began as mod) and what the community does with StarCraft, for instance. SAB is almost like that. It is also very pretty and well designed. I wouldn’t mind if ANet let it live forever in the game. It would become a really interesting showroom. Imagine showing your friends: and you have these amazing landscapes, these really hard bosses on dungeons, this massive zerg of red text (because that is the first thing you see when they are far away) on WvW and… even a super mini-game with fun design and sound.

Speaking about sound, it is very easy to spot good commentaries on visuals but not so easy on sounds. I guess it is obvious that GW2 has some really kick kitten visuals, we don’t need to talk about that. But GW2 has some master work on sound design as well! I love the details, ANet!!! The very delicate sound that trinkets on your armour and weapons do when they are in contact, like metal with metal. The sound of leaves and wind on trees when you’re in a forest. The sound of crackling ice on the winter areas. And even the sound of your weapon hitting different materials on your enemies armours. This game has so many sounds that it is impossible to point all of them. Whoever forum admin reads this, please tell your sound department guys how great their job is.

Finally the Living Story. Now I liked it. I honestly wish the living story were like the Razing from the beginning. Just some NPCs and a couple of achievements are too little for a new content. I understand how you wanted to build the story from a suspicion into a crescendo. But the instances on the Razing were nice, even if they were also simple. I knew that ANet would get better at this with time. I think the Razing instances were better designed than some chapters on your personal story (released with the game). I sincerely hope ANet develops further into this in the future. And please keep the new “full scene cinematics” for all your updates in the future! They are just so much better story tellers than the talking heads. With the exception of the artistic cinematics (mostly on the Story dungeons and important parts of the personal story), I really like the new cinematics better than the talking heads.

It is bad only if they implement it like World of Warcraft does. Currently dailies on Guild Wars can be done by just playing. Sure you will miss that one achievement that will require you to actually give it some attention. But it is honestly not that bad.

Now, as far as exclusive currency for dailies, that I agree with you. There will be, one day I hope, a MMO that will really give you a choice to get the things you want by doing the things you like. That won’t force you to a certain type of gameplay that you don’t like just because that is part of an item you really want. Life is boring like that. Games shouldn’t copy it, in my humble opinion.

Until then, I believe ANet is doing a great job.

Almost exclusively, about 90%. Kurzick’s and Luxon’s were inspired by Russia & China, at least it mostly seems to resemble a mix of the two, which is probably drawn from the fact that the eastern/southern most part of Russia in the Imperial era were heavily influenced by China due to being so close by.

Of course the Kurzick were inspired on the eastern part of Russia. That is because House zu Heltzer, House Vasburg, House Brauer, House Lutgardis and House Durheim really sound like Russian…

And between the Echovald Forest (where “wald” means forest in German) and the Crystal Sea, I believe they take about 40% of Cantha’s map.

Seems like I am talking about GW2. I am not, this is true for all MMOs.

Not that I don’t like the kind of content Calae is talking about. I do. Its just that they’re meaningless. It seems the only thing that matters in the end is the gameplay (like the bosses mechanics and strategies) and the armor level names (Rare, Exotic, Lengendary), because that will be the only thing people will pay attention to, on whatever MMO.
