I don’t think it’s realistic to expect any major staff tweaks, because it works really well being a support weapon and I can’t imagine them changing it in any way (tweaking the numbers is a different story).
As for scepter I don’t believe it can be built into a “perfectly” viable ranged option, at least from the point where it currently stands. It does need some serious tweaks, but in general I think it’s gonna stay similar to what it is at the moment and always stay a mid-range weapon..
.. which always calls for a viable ranged option. And by viable ranged option I mean a two-hander with a range of 1200 and there many possibilities how to implement a longbow so that it won’t be an OP weapon on a profession with awesome survivability.
shiz.5976I crit for 2.5k with my scepter auto’s(55% crit chance). And crit 8-12k with my zealots flame(torch). Guardians can deal tons of dmg at range. The only problem is the scepter’s auto-attack projectile travel speed. It has to be faster, cause now you can outrun it with swiftness.
This is in PvE while being a glass cannon, so this is somewhat irrelevant info really. WvW is the biggest issue here. Speeding up the projectile isn’t a solution really. It will still fly in all directions but the one it’s supposed to fly in at 1200, but being alright, not perfect, but alright at mid-range, which is what scepter really is – mid-ranged weapon.
Varyag.3751Once again, if you want a Longbow, roll a Ranger or Warrior.
Self-note: Ignore this kind of posts.
Varyag.3751Guardians do use ranged weapons, if you didn’t notice, we have staves, tridents and sceptres. Guardians just aren’t masters of ranged combat – ranged weapons are backups for when the enemy is too far away.
Staff is a mid-range support weapon. Scepter is more of a mid-range weapon, if you want somewhat reliable hits (for any aspect of the game, excluding PvE stationary targets). Tridents are underwater weapons so this point is irrelevant.
If you guys don’t do much WvW, that is perfectly fine. But don’t come out here saying our “ranged” options are fine the way they are just because you’re satisfied with them.
Judging by your posts I don’t think you understand the idea behind ANet’s profession versatility. We clearly lack in ranged department and that isn’t something to be quiet about, sorry.
Now while this is really no priority ANet should focus on at this point, I really do expect improvements (go go longbow) with the first expansion at the latest.

I’ve been experiencing this problem as well. My team mates standing next to me and not receiving the boons. It’s not only shouts tho, it’s boons in general I think, because boons I apply through virtue activation (Inspired Virtue trait) don’t get applied either.
@frostflare Love the idea of your shortbow, though that might part is OP.
No conjures, please. We need a real weapon.
Too bad the devs dont seem to care at all about fixing the range issue on guardians, all they care about is making dungeons impossible and
ruining any sort of ability to farm with diminished rewards
You can’t be serious.
Do either of you even use the hammer as a main weapon?
Yes. Why?
hell 1 hand mace does more dps than the 2 hand hammer by a pretty large amount at that
Tell me I did not just read that, please.
Exactly. ^
Some people just want to change everything because it’s them who have issues with it while it’s not an issue in general.

The elites are so poor that I would rather put a normal skill in there. Why can’t we have a tomes be permanent like Kits are on the Engineer?
Trolling much?
Hammer IS a better weapon because of this leap, it still might need a few minor tweaks (nothing wrong with speed; it’s a hammer not a 1h sword, it can’t get faster.) to be a bit suitable for PvE aspect of the game, but we’re getting there.
If you want gapcloser with hammer why are you not a warrior.
Wow, did you really just use this argument?
Wouldn’t fix our “ranged problem”. It isn’t that we aren’t useful in large scale battle. It’s that we lack a decent ranged weapon, that’s all.
I’m sure it’s a bit bugged as it really should negate those conditions for the duration.
The point of racial skills doesn’t seem to be power, but flavor. What these abilities say is that norn are the wilderness race, asura are the technology race, sylvari are the plant race, charr are the military race, and humans are the Ned Flanders race.
Gods and plain vanilla.
I seriously lol’d at the Ned Flanders bit xD then I sighed because it’s so fricken true..
Quoted for truth.
Wand and staff are just way too similar and look stupid on heavy armor classes.
Wand and staff look stupid on a guardian, while you can perfectly imagine a “monk+paragon” themed profession using a technologically advanced weapon that can’t exist without some sort of “pew pew” sound no matter how magically imbued or themed it is? I know I can’t.
Please do explain(expand on).
Don’t fix what isn’t broken. Shield certainly isn’t.
As for Shield of Absorption it’s still partly bugged, because the “detonate” phase doesn’t always occur.
Pistols and rifles? How do these two suit monks or paragons more than a bow, which can be a “magic” weapon while the other two can’t?
(Also imagine something along the lines of a Frost Bow elementalists get to conjure as one of our weapons, I, personally, would kill rabbits in Guild Wars 2 for that!)
Or simply look at our spirit weapons – we can already equip 3 of those as weapons and bow we can’t, seems a perfect candidate to me
I would like the elite tomes to be another health bar. When you use the tome skills with like 50% of your HP left, a new HP bar will appear and slowly go down. If you get damaged the bar will go down faster, and when the elite skill is over, you will come back to your current 50% HP you had before.
Like Necromancers elite skill.
That would make us pretty much un-killable and certainly overpowered. I personally don’t have any problems with our current tomes, in fact I consider them the most powerful elites in the game.
Also, necromancer elite skills don’t have any additional health pools, they are similar to ours.. ours having better (passive) bonuses.
Agreed with ShadowbaneX.

I can only assume people here haven’t played a THIEF.
They’re basically limited to 900 range. And they seem to understand they knew this before choosing the class and find other ways to play.We have 1,200 range. If you require the best ranged weapon options to play, perhaps the Guardian isn’t the correct profession for you. I head the Ranger and Warrior are quite good at that.
Just because Thieves have it bad/worse doesn’t mean Guardians can’t also have problems.
And our effective range is far below 1200, and boring at that. No-one is asking for “the best ranged weapons”. I don’t even understand where you got the idea. Doing something interesting and rewarding during sieges or massive scale dynamic events isn’t that weird to ask, is it?
And you used that “play something else”-defense for the second time now. It’s never a good argument. We don’t want to play the Ranger or the Warrior. We want to play a Guardian. I’m sure most people here love 90% about the Guardian, but the profession isn’t perfect in any way.
This exactly.
Save Yourselves is definitely awesome! I remember fighting Tequatl – he feared everyone and I instinctively pressed this amazing skill.. while other people’s fear ended in a few seconds my character kept running toward the wall for 20 seconds, fun, fun, fun.
Since the first day with my guardian I’ve barely touched GS, mainly because that’s the weapon vast majority of guardians use and they don’t even bother switching. So my point, I guess, was to show other people how (amazingly) viable weapon sets other than GS can be. GS is there just for the damage and cool factor.
Traited last 12s. Without trait is 10s I believe. Description is misleading.
Untraited it lasts 6 seconds while traited lasts 8 seconds. I’ve just tested this.
I think the skill is perfectly fine and has literally tons of uses.
Are there any plans on giving Guardians non-caster ranged weapons?
in Guardian

think of a guardian being closer to what a Paladin is in many games then what a warrior is in most games
See, this is Guild Wars 2, you don’t look at other MMOs at all when playing this game, because GW2 is about choice (which you don’t have in other generic games of this type) and guardian just pulls the short one when it comes to at least a decent ranged option (I literally dream about guardians getting a bow:p).
I can live with his stupid tomes, but no proper ranged weapon? Come on!
Tomes are among the best elites in the game, if not the best.
I do have hopes we will get a real ranged option some day, though
I’ve been kind of expecting Talk Like a Pirate day now on the 14th (go go LA) though it is probably too soon after the game’s start to actually expect an event like this.. or is it? At least make sure it’s there next year – I think every GW1 player would love to see that one making a comeback.
So the first one I hope we’ll get to see is Halloween (Mad King Thorn anyone?)
Toughness = less physical direct dmg (burst and warriors)
Critical Damage = chance to crit on a hit, higher better
Precision = how accurate your every hit is
Toughness = less direct damage (doesn’t have to be physical, any non-condition dmg)
Critical Damage = the higher it is the higher your critical hits will be, has nothing to do with your critical chance
Precision = critical chance; accuracy doesn’t exist in GW2
Sorry, had to do it. Newcomers tend to pick up wrong info really fast
That’s awesome to hear, indeed. Though I must confess the #2 skill being the gap closer while keeping it’s current effect is probably the craziest idea that can happen to this weapon in my opinion, because with hammer being a very slow and immobile weapon this would really make it a lot better and funnier-to-use weapon.
I feel the same as you guys. Guardians do lack a decent ranged option. When I’m in WvW and say a building is under attack I feel we’re really useless in ranged weapon department and there’s just so little we can do compared to other professions.
When I see fellow thieves and warriors pulling out their ranged weapons and having an option to really put out some aoe devastation or snipe someone down (I’m not expecting to see THAT much damage output on a guardian, doh) I’d really just swap my scepter for a some sort of a bow.. no wait, I’d swap my scepter for a bow weapon for every situation there is..
.. elementalist’s conjure Frost Bow skill anyone? Now that would be nice to see as one of the guardian’s weapons, even if it meant getting rid of a scepter forever. Of course the last 3 skills would be altered not to be so OP with unlimited usage, but I really like the idea.
I do have hopes we’ll get a nice ranged option in the first expansion if not earlier.
And if we do keep the current scepter.. please change the #1 skill – make the orbs at least twice as big as they are now; and #2 skill needs bigger fists and both need a bit more reliable hit rates, that is for sure.
Also, fellow guardians in “Brainstorming: future Guardian weapon combinations” thread have already presented some amazing ideas.

After reading this thread I’m really happy I am not the only one who feels our racials are a bit of a lackluster.
Now, while I’m not bothered by elite skills at all – quite on the contrary, I find them really nice regarding the “rule” that says that racials should be underwhelming compared to at least of the most of profession skills and are only there for personal preferrence/flavor. Also to add that ALL the other racial skills have at least few scenarios I’d be glad to use them in.
The real human racial skill problem I feel starts with our non-elite skills – Prayer to Kormir, Prayer to Dwayna and Prayer to Lyssa. I can’t think of any scenario where at least one of these three would be useful to take and I would love to see them get some attention, at least Prayer to Dwayna – all it does is heals you. Every profession has 3 healing skills that are better than this one. Sylvari racial Healing Seed, which heals, applies regen to allies and acts as an aggro breaker if times get a bit rough, is absolutely awesome compared to ours. Add a special effect to this existing skill or completely revamp it. Maybe calls down a spirit of dwayna that applies a minor health shield for to allies? (which would move it to utility skills from healing skills).
Guardian street rat who lost his sister. Loved it.
