The Walk of Shame

Speaking specifically about Tequatl, if you just go AFK after tagging Tequatl for event participation in the first round, you’re going to miss out on the battery defense events, which means missing out on additional loot. Splitting up an event into sub-events like that seems like a pretty clever solution.

I don’t see a need to automatically respawn people to other areas, though. (And, hey, at least people lying dead on the battle field aren’t running through turrets?)

[Suggestion]Make titles more visable

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

I like titles the way they are. They’re readable, but not obnoxious or distracting, which would be a concern of mine if they made them significantly more prominent.

Different people are going to want different things...but I’m also okay with the current level of “prestige” attached to GW2 titles. If I see GWAMM, I think, “That person played a lot of GW1,” and if I see someone with Dungeon Master, I think, “That person does a lot of dungeons,” etc.

Are titles like “The Sunbringer” or “Sanctum Sprinter” prestigious? Maybe not, but I find them just as interesting, because they tell me something about what people have done and how they choose to present themselves, without so much “Look at me! Look at me!”

What happened to Dragon Ball?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

I haven’t played Dragon Ball, because it doesn’t seem like my kind of activity, so I have no opinion on this version of it either way. But I do want to say something about this:

It is literally the least fun thing I’ve ever felt forced to do in this game and I can’t not do it because then I miss out on the daily laurel.

Then don’t do it. You’re not even complaining about needing to do it to get a unique skin or something like that: Laurels, and everything you can get with them, are accessible just from logging in.

Yeah, it’ll take longer, but save the “I’m forced to do <thing I don’t like> for <thing I want>” for when you’re being blocked from something exclusive.

Tequatl the Sunless is too easy again

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

I think Tequatl is in a good place. I see a lot of people enjoying it, and it does require a certain amount of planning/preparation/strategy. Yes, it’s a well-known strategy, but people are still engaged by it in a way completely different from old Tequatl, or current Shatterer.

They’ve added other big bosses, some permanent, some temporary, to scratch that “figuring it out” itch. If they really wanted to revisit a boss, make it Shatterer, instead of doing another iteration on Tequatl.

When will you remove Crafting Timeout

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

It bears repeating, because some people seem to be missing it: You can sell some of the ascended crafting materials you make. Things like Spiritwood Planks, Deldrimor Steel Ingots, and Bolts of Damask can all be bought/sold on the Trading Post.

This gives you the option of either working through the time gate, or buying materials you need to accelerate the process. That might be frustrating if you have all the materials and you’re in a hurry, but it gives other players something to craft and resell at a profit.

Time gates are never going to be popular, but I’m not convinced they’re a bad thing.

More Voices For Created Characters

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

While I’m sure some of the actors weren’t cheap, I’m not sure they were as expensive as recording “many average actors.” Remember, you have to pay other people that make and work with those recordings, then work those recordings into the game. It’s not just the actors, so unless they hire very cheap actors, I’m not sure the savings would be enough.

I don’t know if the French or German dubs use big-name voice actors, but multiple languages is something to consider. Even in the English version, it’s not like they splurged on blockbuster movie stars. (Which is no knock against the cast—Popular celebrities != great voice acting.)

my problem with crafting mawdrey

I definitely bought a lot of materials off of the TP while making Mawdrey, specifically the Foxfire Clusters and some lodestones. I crafted the craft-able parts, which took several weeks with the time-gating, but I’d still be at it if I tried harvesting all the raw materials personally.

my problem with crafting mawdrey

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

It’s working as intended. Part of Mawdrey’s design was to give crafting players something valuable to resell.

A Clay Pot, for example, is 8g44s off the TP. Between the crafting level barrier, the time investment for geodes, and the daily creation limit, it retains a high price, making it something crafters can sell at a profit. Grow Lamps and the two types of Plant Food are in a similar position.

If you don’t have a 400 artificer, you can either buy the Clay Pots or you can invest in an artificer. Building your own artificer to 400 is actually pretty cheap, compared to the clothing crafter you need to get to 500 for the Heat Stone. (Or you can buy it from other players, giving them something of value to create.)

Edit:
As for needing to run fractals, I don’t usually do fractals, but it wasn’t terrible. It helps if you go on a day when Scale 1-10 Fractal is one of the dailies, and you find a casual-friendly group. I did some fractals for Mawdrey, and now I’m interested in doing them more often. \o/

Make Black Lion chest a rare drop.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

I can’t see how it would benefit the economy to make Black Lion Chests drop less often. I roll my eyes as much as the next person, before selling it for ~45c, but that also means that I don’t even think twice about buying one when I do have a key.

I don’t buy keys from the gemstore, but they’re more appealing if the key is the only real expense, rather than needing to shell out a significant amount for the key and the chest.

Meanwhile, higher chest prices would benefit the people who want to resell them, not open them. That’s not good for Anet, and not particularly better for the rest of us, if they reduce the drop rate. (Although less junk to sell is less junk to sell.)

Mostly, I suppose it would benefit people who buy in bulk before the change, then sell after. ;P

Can you even obtain the recipes for the grenth/lyssa/dwayna backpieces now?

Recipes on the Trading Post…

Grenth: 6.19 G
Dwayna: 89.8 G
Lyssa: 350.99G

-whistle-

Is the Shadow of Grenth really that unpopular, or what?

Mawdrey is substantially more complicated than the god-themed back items, and probably cheaper, too, considering how many Bolts of Damask are required to make one. I haven’t run the numbers, and it’s cheaper to make Damask than to buy it, but I’d be surprised if you could come in under 200 G for Shadow of Grenth, 250 if you bought the Damask.

As far as Fractals go, I didn’t have a terrible time with them. I rarely do Fractals, or Dungeons, for that matter, but I was able to find a group for low-level Fractals, and while I didn’t know what I was doing at parts, it was reasonably fun.

Best advice: Now that we have the new Daily rewards system, wait for a day when one of the options is Daily Fractal or Daily Scale 1-10 Fractal. You’ll have an easier time filling a group, even with Fractal newbies (like me!), and you’re guaranteed a bonus Pristine Fractal Relic. (You need five for the Mists Stone.) You’ll also earn +1 agony infusions that way (16 for Mawdrey.)

Just don’t go above 9, find a good group (either to carry/teach you or learn with you,) and it can be fun. Really!

(As Xiahou says, agony will trash you if you’re not prepared for it. My party (very kindly) carried me through the fight with Mai Trin, because I just couldn’t take the agony damage. I’m going to prepare better next time.)

Replacing Trahearne

in Living World

Redenaz.8631

(For what it’s worth, I do like Trahearne. That’s not a universally-shared opinion, but I hope he’s not dead.)

I wouldn’t want to see a replacement Marshall. The writers could pull an unaffiliated character that has the powerful mutual respect of the Orders out of thin air, but I think it would be far more interesting (and believable) to have a fragmented Pact instead. A leader from each of the Orders would be able to represent their faction as they try to work together, possibly with the occasional mediation or executive decision from the Pact Commander.

Season 1 in Story Journal?

in Living World

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

Season 1 isn’t in the story journal because the content wasn’t designed in that way. While there were some instanced areas, most of Season 1 was open world content and usually designed to require large numbers of players, both things that would require some major reworking to fit into the journal in some fashion.

They’ve said before that they would like to add Season 1 somehow, but they also have no ETA for it. They also haven’t committed to it happening “eventually,” either—I would guess it’s something they’d really like to do, but it would require too many resources, even compared to developing new content. They haven’t ruled it out entirely, but I don’t think they have anyone spending the majority of their time on it.

What is mawdrey and is is worth making?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

I finished my Mawdrey earlier in the month, and I’m pretty satisfied with the experience. It was expensive and somewhat confusing, but I had fun with the scavenger hunt, it cleared a lot of items out of my inventory, and it gave me some incentive to get my tailoring up to 500. I don’t expect to get much value out of Bloodstone conversion, but I don’t feel like I have to keep ALL of my dust anymore, either. Plus, it’s my first Ascended back item. The whole process gave me a goal, like Ascended Crafting or (in theory) making a Legendary, and it was a fun experience for me.

Whether it’s worthwhile depends on what you like doing, and what you want. If you just want an Ascended back item, you can certainly find less complex options, whether you go with Fractals or the Grenth/Dwayna/Lyssa back pieces. Not sure if they’re cheaper than Mawdrey or not, given how involved Mawdrey is to craft, but they’re definitely simpler.

I would not count on Mawdrey II ever providing a meaningful return on investment. I think it’s kinda fun to feed it Bloodstone Dust, and there are some interesting items on its reward table, but it’s definitely a bonus toy, not the main attraction. If the rewards are what you want, save the gold and just buy what you want.

That post from CC Eva is waaaay out of date. Servers don’t work that way anymore.

You can read that news post for the full details on how Megaservers work, but, generally, your homeworld isn’t as much of a hassle as it used to be.

If you’re in a party with your friend and you’re in two different copies of a map, right-click on their portrait and choose “Join in <map name>.” That will try to send you to their copy of the map. If that doesn’t work, have them try the same on your portrait.

Maps sometimes get full, mostly around pack-in events like Tequatl, but I’d be surprised if you’re both in full maps.

I'm a little angry.

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

I’m not sure anger is an appropriate response, so I won’t take that part seriously.

As for why you can’t join the Nightmare Court, Inquest, etc., it’s just a question of economy and design decisions made. If you joined the Nightmare Court, for instance, they’d need to make one or more dramatically different storylines just for the Sylvari portion of your story, to say nothing about what effect it would have on your Order or Pact storylines. Then you’ve got to decide what to do about your interaction with open-world NPCs—Do you still fight Nightmare Court in the open world if you’re a member? Do you fight good-aligned Sylvari?

You certainly could make a game like that, and plenty exist. But GW2 isn’t that type of game, because they decided to spend their resources differently, writing the storylines they did and an open-world where everyone interacts consistently with enemies.

If using the Zephyrite Skills are that big of a problem for you, you might want to hold off on pre-ordering the expansion until we have more details on how the three layers of the jungle, gliding, etc. will work. Of course, considering they haven’t announced a price or release date yet, worrying about it might be a little premature.

Judging from your complaints, I can’t help but wonder if maybe your gripes about the game run deeper than the (relatively small, relatively easy) Zephyrite skill challenges to navigate around Dry Top. (There are some harder parts, but just to get around the zone…)

For anyone unfamiliar with it, the Krytan/Primeval/Profane chest includes both a set of armor skins and a set of low-level armor with that skin. You basically get the skin twice, once for your low-level gear (so you can wear it right away) and a set of skins to wear when you replace that gear.

I’m not sure I see the point of selling it separately, however. Just buy the skins and apply them to some dirt-cheap low-level gear, if that’s what you want. Or some high-level gear.

ripple v. krytan ministry

in Living World

Your honor and ministry officials, Legate Minister Lord Caudecus Beetlestone, while an importat ministry official himself—as you are all very much aware—is not in charge of, or responsible for, the maintenance and accessibility of every ramp, stair, street, road, or decoy-forest-trail-leading-to-ambush-by-bandits in the country.

While Minister Caudecus expresses his heartfelt sympathy for plaintiff’s injuries, the charges against the Minister are plainly misplaced. Indeed, Minister Caudecus does not even, as the plaintiff suggests, dwell in Divinity’s Reach proper, but rather in the outlaying township of Beetletun.

Plaintiff is either the victim of overly-ambitious, profiteering council, or is personally intent on targeting Minister Caudecus on the basis of his high profile, justly-obtained wealth, and famous big heart.

As the Minister’s legal representative in this matter, I ask that charges be dismissed for lack of culpability or relevance on the part of the defendant. I would also like to announce that the Minister, his generous heart moved by the plaintiff’s story, has decided to personally finance the installation of accessibility improvements throughout several major destinations within Divinity’s Reach, and to donate 110 gold pieces to the defendant to assist in his medical treatment. Minister Caudecus wishes the plaintiff and the court a very merry Wintersday.

Cultural armor: an unfinished concept?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Posted by: Redenaz.8631

Redenaz.8631

It didn’t seem so unusual when the game launched, but I think the world changed around Cultural Armor, so to speak. Exotic Gear turned out to be a lot easier to obtain than the developers originally expected (I think?) and the super expensive T3 gear was never reworked to match expectations.

Given their limited stats, both in terms of rarity and attribute selection, I imagine there are very few people who don’t reskin their cultural armor onto something else. At that level, you’re really buying the skin more than you are the stats, but it’s funny / dumb that transmutation is in there essentially as a hidden cost, when most people would rather just buy Skins. I’d like to see this updated to be more intuitive and to fit more with what the rest of the game is doing.

As for the T1/T2 sets, I think they’re good, because they’re race specific armor at a tolerable cost. (T1/T2 sets use different skins from T3, and from each other, so there’s no redundancy there.)

I wouldn’t mind seeing more combat tonics. Obviously, there are a lot of tonics that just wouldn’t work for that, but there’s room for some interesting player-shaped tonics that would work in combat. (For example, a Nightmare Court Tonic, Tonic of Whispers, Inquest Tonic, etc.)

It always seemed strange that the Watchknight tonic was a highly-restricted one-off.

I don’t think tonics would be a good fit for this. If you want to change your look, it would be annoying to have to constantly using a tonic, and that’s before you get to questions of how you would control what your character looks like once you’ve transformed. (Is it random? Does it use your character creation options as a key to assign corresponding features?)

There’s obviously some amount of tech for combat tonics (Infinite Watchknight Tonic,) but I’m not so sure about this idea.

I do wish they’d fix this. It’s not a huge inconvenience, but it’s still a mistake, and a confusing one for anyone who wasn’t around for Scarlet’s attack on Lion’s Arch.

It wasn’t Scarlet’s attack that caused it. It’s Modremoth’s tendrils/tentacles. Theres at least one other waypoint (in Brisban, iirc) that is still broken/contested, due to the tendril actually breaking the floating ‘waypoint’ thing.

What, seriously?

Did we ever seen that one break or something? There’s just a couple fragments without any sign of Mordremoth, so I figured it was left over from Scarlet’s attack, between the event that happened there, along with the rest of the rubble, the huge ditch, and the Breachmaker wreackage.

The situation is more confusing than I’d realized. e___e

@Donari – Rata Sum is pretty great. My “craft manager” character (my only ascended crafter and ascended crafting supplies storage) is almost always in Rata Sum, except for lately when I’ve needed access to the forge for Mawdrey. It seems unlikely that they’d bill an expansion as “setting up a new framework for how an MMO can grow its universe,” but “the Living World was just the beginning” suggests that they’re not just going to go onto Season 3 in the same pattern as Season 2.

I’m intrigued, if for no more reason than I’ve been waiting for any kind of roadmap for a while. As long as it doesn’t boil down to a teaser trailer, it’ll at least give us something to chew on.

I’m not saying skipping to Ep. 7 was a bad idea, if you want to jump into Ep. 8 when it comes out with a minimum investment of time/money. I’m just surprised you picked out “characters assume I know what’s happening” as a bad thing, because the alternative would be writing each episode to explain previous episodes. That would work for people who missed previous episodes, but would be aggravating for those who have to sit through “LAST TIME, ON GUILD WARS 2…” sequences every episode.

It would make sense to let you unlock them over time, as you suggest, at least from one perspective, but other perspectives make sense, too. By having a “log in now or pay later” model, Anet gets a new revenue stream that doubles as a steady player reward system. It seems like an agreeable trade-off to me.

(Of course, I have the luxury of logging in during LS releases, even if I don’t play them right away. I don’t think their fees are outrageous, however, especially if you’re unable to log in because your job keeps you busy, which means you do have some income. Light Heritage Armor is actually my favorite armor set in the game.

While I got a somewhat later start on GW1 (after EotN had already released) and never finished (or will go back and finish) my Hall of Monuments, I felt pretty reasonably rewarded. I use my armor skins fairly frequently, I use my cat mini more than any other, I use the staff skin frequently, and if I every have a character that uses 1h sword or shortbow, those will be my go-to skins as well. If someone doesn’t like existing rewards in the HoM, I can’t help but write it off as a matter of different tastes.

I’m totally okay with them using throwback skins as Gem Store items, rather than tying them to the previous game somehow. Like it or not, GW1 players got their “Thanks for playing GW1! Come check out GW2!” rewards, and, 2.5 years into GW2, it seems wasteful to expand on that in a way that leaves out players who started with GW2. If they want to reward longtime GW1 players, it should be through things like Ogden’s reappearance or the statue of Abaddon, not through anything that actively encourages people to stop playing GW2 to go back and play GW1. That’s doesn’t make any business sense.

The accumulation of playing GW1 for six years wasn’t a Fiery Dragon Sword in GW2. Hopefully, it was the good experience you had playing GW1 for six years.

Interesting that these are account bound. I received Ak-Muhl’s Jaw, and while I’d probably sell if it I have the option, I do appreciate that it’s salvageable if I decide I don’t want it. I’m looking forward to seeing what else I get from these Exotic Gear Boxes.

Ascended weapon vs Legendary weapons

I’ve basically ruled out Legendary weapons until either there’s a more interesting way to obtain precursors, or a precursor randomly drops for me. The rest of the process sounds tolerable, even fun, but I can’t see myself spending such vast amounts of gold on one weapon, even with a cool skin and selectable stats.

Deciding which stat combo to settle on for my first ascended weapon was aggravating, and it wasn’t cheap, but at least a lot of that cost (crafting to 500) is reusable for other weapons, and even the total cost pales in comparison to the cost of an even slightly popular precursor. Some people like the climb, but it’s a real dealbreaker for me in this case.

How to get Laurals.

Actually, with the new reward system, you earn 35 laurels every 28 days (1.25/day,) whereas the old system would only get you 1/day. The laurels are clumped together now, but overall you earn them faster for logging in that you ever did for doing dailies.

If you choose the laurels from the Chest of Loyalty (day 28 reward,) that number goes up to 55 laurels every 28 days, or nearly 2 laurels a day. It might feel slow on non-laurel days, but you’re still earning them faster over time.

Without addressing the points raised in this post, I’d like to address the shape of the post itself: A big ol’ wall of text.

Why do people write like this? The longer and more rambling a paragraph is, the more difficult it is for anyone (other posters or even developers) to address anything it raises, because the only comprehensive-yet-comprehensible way to address points raised in this way is to work up a bulleted list and go through it one at a time, which is impractically time consuming.

I tried to read / skimmed the OP, and all I can really get out of it is “This thread is about how Odeezee is unhappy and doesn’t think Anet cares about players.” It seems to request everything from UI changes to vast expanses of land without mobs to bosses that devastate the landscape.

There’s no way to address all that in a single thread, so why not pick out the individual points and make threads about them, or add them to existing threads on the relevant topics? That way, you create or contribute to a discussion, instead of just ranting without focus.

I hate to nitpick grammar, but as long as I’m whining about wall-of-text posts, I might as well dive all the way in: When you don’t capitalize letters at the start of sentences, it makes everything you’ve written needlessly more difficult to read. It really does.

Skins, wardrobe, size scaling and OST

No idea about Marjory’s Dagger. The Living Story NPC weapons tend to come and go, as you’ve observed, although I couldn’t refer to any schedule or historical pattern.

With the gem store items, using it (or even obtaining it?) should unlock it in your wardrobe. It’ll still cost transmutation charges to apply it to other weapons, but that’s substantially cheaper than buying another skin. Can someone who’s actually bought a skin please confirm that?

I hate using preview with staff weapons, because the character holds them with the top pointed down, which is completely different from how they hold them in gameplay. Since you’re holding the staff upright, the blade won’t be slicing into the ground when you’re using it. (“The Crossing” is even more ridiculous, since its signature lantern hangs so low it isn’t visible in preview.) It will, however, probably clip through your ear when you’re not wielding it.

Frustratingly, the OST is effectively out of production / no longer for sale. The physical disc version was only produced in a limited edition, and the digital version was only ever available from DirectSong, Jeremy Soule’s online store, which no longer sells it.

I’ve frankly given up on ever being able to pay anyone for this music, which seems like a loss for everyone involved.

Edit: Actually, I’m not sure there was ever a digital version at all, or if it was only ever the disc version. For what it’s worth, you can buy the single vocal track, “Fear Not This Night” on iTunes.

[Suggestion] WP Teleport Effects

I can’t see this being a big seller unless they add a sort of cinematic effect when you waypoint, so you can see yourself go. That might get irritating, however, if you have to watch it every time.

This idea is creative, but potentially problematic. Some waypoints get very busy, particularly around world bosses or farming events, so a couple people with griffons quickly turns into a whole flock, which turns into an ghastly, overlapping blob of griffon wings, wurms, and Asuran particle effects.

Why do they HAVE to role play in public?

in Guild Wars 2 Discussion

Redenaz.8631

I don’t recall ever seeing roleplayers getting offensive or inappropriate in chat, including emotes. I’m sure it happens, because of course it does, but there’s my anecdotal two cents about how pervasive the problem is.

I generally enjoy coming across roleplayers, because it’s nice to see that people can enjoy the game in vastly different ways. Two of my favorite dungeon PUG members turned out to be roleplayers, and it was solid gold to have them in character the whole time.

If people are getting graphic, report them. If they’re just playing the game their way, move along. Tyria’s big enough.

As far as things Anet can do to improve the situation, I think a lot of people would enjoy a dedicated RP server, regardless of megaserver implications. Reducing the range on /me emotes would be a good thing, too.
